"South Austin college St. Edward’s University is planning on leasing out the former El Gallo space on South Congress to a new restaurant. The university purchased the 2910 South Congress Avenue space in October 2017, nine months after longtime, family-run Tex-Mex restaurant El Gallo closed at the address because of the high operating costs." - Nadia Chaudhury

I've been coming here with my family since I was a baby. It has been consistent every single time! This place has the best salsa I've ever had! The best cheese I've ever had! The queso is like butter and the cheese enchiladas are like heaven! My boyfriend ordered a steak the other day and no surprise, it was fabulous! Ask for Eddie, he will give you the best service and smile! I can't love this place any more. Anyone that disagrees doesn't know what real tex-Mex is. Best in Austin, hands down!

I've eaten at "El Gallo" mostly during the lunch rush hours, and the service has been good and prompt, and the food fresh and tasteful. Tonight, the service was good as the waiter was attentive, prompt, and friendly. Unfortunately, the food was horrible. I ordered the "pollo a la parilla" and it was rubbery at best. I asked our waiter to have the cook grill it for a few more minutes. However, the consistency did not change. The beans and the rice we good, but the corn tortillas were heated up in their microwave. I expected a lot better food tonight. Thankfully, they did not charge me for the food, which was only right since I only ate a third of my plate. Whatever you do, DO NOT order their grilled chicken breast.

I used to go to this restaurant with my Boss and colleagues for over 10 years every week. Now I no longer work in the area, but I still like to come back and taste the special meal or taco salad in the shell, we always enjoyed good Mexican food, ( my wife is from Mexico and loves this place, but not many others ). I heartily recommend this place, I am always treated with respect and the service is great, and the food hot and great tasting.

I hadn't been here before, but my bestfriend suggested it and I'm always open to try something new so we decided to go on a Monday at 8:20pm. The weather was nice so we sat on the covered patio. The restaurant has a very tourist in Mexico feel which is cute because I havent been home in a while. Lol I ordered a Burrito Especial which came with a salad and rice. The food was delivered pretty quick and when they tell you the plate is hot they mean it. Lol The rice was fluffy good with great flavor. The burrito was soft and smothered in cheese sauce. Our server was attentive, polite and friendly. I definitely would go back and try something else.

We stopped in Austin to have lunch during our road trip. It had good reviews online. So we decided to try it. We had one of their lunch specials. It was very good & their prices were very reasonable. I would definitely recommend it.

Not sure why this place is so popular. I have gone twice and each time it is never good. I got the chicken fajitas last time and it was okay, nothing to write home about. Their queso seems like melted Velveeta cheese. It is priced appropriately for the quality of the food.

We ended up stopping in here on a Saturday around 11am, after we found out the food truck we planned to eat at had moved downtown for SXSW. The inside is surprisingly very decorative, but pretty dark (it was a rainy day outside). The staff was very nice and attentive, the owner (I think, could have been a manager) even talked to us for a few minutes as we were leaving. We ordered a few barbacoa tacos and the all-day migas, both were generous portions and really tasty. The chips and salsa were good, and hot tortillas were brought out with our meals. I wish they'd had some queso to order but otherwise it was great.

I like the classic cheese enchiladas! I order them with fresh sliced serrano peppers on top. Allways perfect. The top shelf rita is one of the best in town. Also be sure and try the Cabrito en al horno for another classic dish that is hard to find. Sad that they are closing. Go now to support them and have 1 more marg!
