The New Atlanta Restaurant Openings You Should Know About

"The team behind Birria El Gordo is opening a new location in Uptown. For those still unfamiliar with the trendy neighborhood term, it's the area near the Lindbergh MARTA station. Expect tacos and cocktails to be on the menu. " - juli horsford, jacinta howard

El Gordo Review - Uptown Atlanta - Atlanta - The Infatuation

"From the same team behind Marietta’s Birria el Gordo, this taco restaurant in Uptown has faux marble tables with leather booths and an obligatory neon sign (it’s a multicolored skull, which we begrudgingly admit is actually kind of cool). Good luck if your phone is on 1% because this is one of those venues where you order everything by phone. Or maybe call it your lucky day, since mostly everything from the $5 street tacos with criminally under-seasoned meat to the painfully plain toro bravo is forgettable. Also skip the hard, super thick chips and queso unless you’d like to pay for dental work. The best things here are the quesabirrias, which have tender, stewed beef and a nice cheesy crunch. Since there’s a full bar, we can co-sign El Gordo as a place to wet your whistle with a standard marg, but not much else." - Juli Horsford

Stumbled across this restaurant while running errands and I’m so glad we did! The atmosphere was incredible and cozy, service was friendly and welcoming. The quesabirria was delicious without the gut bomb, the guac and chips were light and fresh and the water was infused with cucumber YUM. I left full and happy, will definitely be going back again soon

5-Star Review for El Gordo – Lindbergh/Buckhead El Gordo absolutely delivered! The food was fantastic—especially the steak tacos, which were full of flavor and very reasonably priced. The drinks stole the show though—those adult Capri Suns are next-level and the tequila was super smooth. A big shoutout to Michelle, our host, who was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and attentive throughout our visit. She made the experience even better. The music and vibe were perfect for a Sunday afternoon—relaxed, energetic, and just what we needed to unwind. The space isn’t huge, but that actually adds to the charm. The ambience makes you feel like you’ve escaped the city without having to go far. Highly recommend this spot for a fun, low-key meal with great food, great drinks, and great people.

This was my second time eating here. Just like the first time, everything was great! I had the burrito w/pork and the mango alfresco (not sure I spelled that correctly, but the taste is what matters)! It's a chill spot to relax, eat and listen to good music. They have a bar inside and the ambiance is superb inside or out. They have very clean bathrooms and I like their faucet 😂. I really love their industrial ceilings and the color concepts they chose. Everything flows together 🤓

Easy on the wallet which makes it easier to eat more and it's a walk from my apartment. Music was also 👌 I will be back next Tuesday gonna make this a regular thing oh and Hibiscus juice recommended was perfect for the palette even the water was perfect.

Had a great time! Walked in on a random Tuesday and there was a trivia night going on. Joined in at the last minute and won a $10 voucher! The Tuesday special they had was great! We got the taco tray that was a great value and the tacos were sooo good! The guac was great too! Melina was very sweet and attentive and took great care of us! Can't wait for them to add happy hour and more specials to the menu! Will definitely be back regularly!

We are here to talk about the food, the vibes can wait! If you’re into queso you can’t go wrong with this one (add chorizo). The gringo taco are outside of my typical Mexican comfort food but these were freshly fried shells and the street tacos were delicious. Now I may have been bribed with free churros to write this review but they were just small motivation. (See pictured) This was the only photo I had time to take. The spicy margarita has freshly muddled jalapeños, the guava margarita came highly recommended but highly disappointing. The portion size was fair Especially the street tacos were pretty filling. FYI THE SPICY SALSA IS SPICY. The vibes! The vibes! The patio was more of a favorite than the inside which felt small. The aesthetic were definitely inviting 100 % can’t wait to come back.

Yelp
El Gordo is a family-owned modern taqueria featuring specialty tacos & cocktails. The Pineda family also owns Birria El Gordo in Marietta. Opened in July 2024, El Gordo is located in Uptown Atlanta, w/ easy access to the Lindbergh MARTA station. El Gordo is open late Thursdays-Saturdays (3am) to accommodate the local club scene. Chef Jose Toledo's, who recently moved to Atlanta from Mexico City, menu includes specialty tacos such as quesabirrias, picapiedra (pork belly, chicarron, guacamole, salsa, relish), & la sirena (fried shrimp, potato, avocado, & salsa). The al pastor is sliced straight off of a trompo (rotating spit). The full bar includes margaritas & cocktails named after Mexican movies. The juices are all made in-house. The Pineda family is locally known for their house-made birria, w/ their beef boiled for over three hours in a 25-ingredient dried chili marinade. The eatery has an industrial feel w/ colorful accents, including neon signage & custom tile murals. There is ample patio seating for people watching. El Gordo could benefit from better customer service; while the food comes out in an appropriate period of time, the waitstaff tends to be cordial but a little distant. During two visits, I ordered the Sopa Fideo, Esquite, Al Pastor & Asada Street Tacos, Salmon Ceviche Tostada, Quesabirria, Hibiscus Tea, & a Mango Margarita. The street tacos and quesabirria were solid; I preferred the al pastor one to the asada. I loved the crisp of the quesabirria shell & liked the consommé flavor. I appreciated the freshness of the accompanying salsas & made a note to order the 3 Amigos during my next visit (queso, guacamole, salsa, totopos). The Sopa Fideo was pretty basic (broth, pasta shells); however, the broth had nice flavor. The esquites were solid, especially w/ the addition of avocado crema. However, I wished for more chile flavor. The salmon ceviche tostada was fresh & herbacious. A squeeze of a couple of lime slices & the tostada was easily the best bite of my meal. My hisbiscus tea was tasty, w/ and w/o the added shot of Community Spirit Vodka. I loved the mango margarita--it is definitely one of the better ones I have experienced in Atlanta.

Yelp
Easily my worst dining experience in Buckhead in 30 years. The food was excessively salty--borderline inedible. The bartender refused to make a common cocktail request, claiming all drinks were pre-mixed, yet somehow an Old Fashioned was fine? A bizarre inconsistency for a place charging $17 per drink. Bread was barely provided (one small piece for four people), despite two appetizers requiring it. The 'saffron rice' tasted plain, with no discernible saffron flavor at all. To top it off, the QR code payment system caused us to overpay by $18. Instead of fixing the issue promptly, the server kept us waiting for 20 minutes, insisting we hadn't paid, when in reality, both parties were double-charged. For the price, this was an unacceptable experience. There are far better options in Atlanta where the food isn't over-salted, the service is reasonable, and you don't get stuck in a tech-induced billing nightmare. Won't be back!

Yelp
So .. I went back twice this week lmao( not too much on me ) but I wanted to try the burrito and some other stuff on the menu so I stopped by after work . Service was great . My order didn't go thru so I had to wait alittle longer than usual so they gave me a free tamarind juice for waiting . We love that . The burrito was so fresh and flavorful, I tried it with all 3 sauces and it was fire.its also a nice size so I ate half and that was enough. The other item I tried was like a chicken tostada if you will . It was good too, I'd recommend it if you want something lighter vs the tacos because I could probably eat 10 of them in 1 sitting . I'm sure I'll be back once they start having brunch , this is my new fave . Stay tuned ! & try this place !

Yelp
I ordered the Quesabirrias ($14.16) and La Sirena tacos ($12.98) from Uber Eats. Both items came with 2 tacos, which I figured $6-7 per taco was not an unusual price for tacos in Atlanta comparative to other restaurants with similar food items. However after receiving the tacos, I couldn't believe how small the tacos were. They were about 1/3 of the size of a standard taco. I had ordered these items thinking I would have some leftover however both orders (a total of 4 tacos), was not enough for a single person. I am disappointed and appalled that it costed ~$30. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done since I ordered through Uber Eats however will not be ordering from this restaurant again. I would hope that the restaurant can fix the proportion of food to price ratio.
