Loro Review - South Lamar - Austin - The Infatuation

"Having celebrity parents can be a challenge. Sure, your birthday parties are the things of legend at your elementary school, but you end up with a name like Apple or North too. You’re also never expected to escape your family’s shadow. As the child of Uchi and Franklin Barbecue, Loro does have two famous parents. And while it takes things from each of them, this Asian-influenced smokehouse turned out really great, unlike a lot of celebrity kids. Loro is an indoor/outdoor restaurant on South Lamar that looks a bit like a camp dining hall—minus the hair-netted cook and plus a large, partially covered patio. You don’t need to make a reservation or spend hours in line to eat here. However, there’s still usually a bit of a wait for a seat, which is the perfect amount of time to drink a frozen cocktail while you look over the menu. With lots of large tables, both inside and out, Loro is a great choice for a low-key office Happy Hour or your skeeball team’s end of season party, but you could just as easily come here on a date, too. photo credit: Roger Ho The food here consists mostly of barbecued and grilled meats, which are served on small metal trays and designed to be shared. Make sure to get the smoked bavette too. It’s sliced hanger steak topped with shishito salsa and pickled onions, and might be the secret best dish on the menu. You may hear that they also serve the same brisket as Franklin, but at Loro it’s topped with Thai herbs and chili gastrique. It’s still delicious—and you don’t have to spend the whole day waiting for it—but it’s just not as interesting as some of the other things on the menu. There are a lot of really good things to try here, and portions are on the smaller side, so don’t be afraid to get one of almost everything. Loro is the rare celebrity kid that turned out fine. It’s a reliably good restaurant with creative food that works for a low-key date or an afternoon of snacking and day drinking with your friends. There’s no hiding where Loro came from, but it’s made a name for itself that’s entirely its own. We’re just happy that name isn’t Suri or Blue. Food Rundown photo credit: Raphael Brion Candied Kettle Corn With Burnt Ends Even if you’re here for just a drink on the patio, this sweet and savory bag of kettle corn and brisket should be on your table. Oak Grilled Snap Peas These peas are covered in sriracha powder and served with a spicy kimchi dip. They’re also a great way to eat some vegetables before starting your multiple courses of meat. Smoked Prime Bavette Bavette is a type of flank steak and here it’s cooked in brisket drippings before being seared and sliced to order. It’s one of the more expensive things on the menu, but get it even if you have to sacrifice some of the other dishes. Smoked Beef Brisket The brisket here is only served here after 4pm (but available on a sandwich before then) and while we like the shishito relish on top, don’t make this your top priority. Cheeseburger The patty is a mix of brisket and bavette, and it’s topped with a brisket jam, red onion, and muenster cheese. Chicken Karaage Here the fried chicken is topped with numbing and tingly Szechuan salt and Thai herbs, and it comes with a chili aioli for dipping. This is a great appetizer to share." - Adele Hazan

This was our first time visiting this location. We were seated right away! The service was great! The food was wonderful!

Food and service is so much better than the old location in crystal, which had really gone down hill. Happy to see this new location and happy they are keeping cleaner and tidy!! Tasty food at a fair price

We were offered 2 for 1 drinks and ordered a classic and a larger size; we were not told if they were different sizes they wouldn’t qualify. When the bill came I pointed out we were charged full price for both, we were THEN told that was only if they were the same size! They made no effort to satisfy and left the bill as is. Fine. We just won’t be back again. FYI

Google
A solid mexican food restaurant. The food is always quality with a few times when it's just average. The food service is quick, and the servers are great. I recommend the lunch time menu! The chips and salsa are great too!

Google
Service was good! She was tentative. Service 4/5. Food was 2/5. The food was way over cooked, and to much cheese sauce. It was like they know they over cooked it and tried to hide it with cheese sauce. The restaurant was large, so much unused space, was not busy at all. There was stuff random spots throughout half of the unused restaurant. Bathrooms were kinda gross, flies, all the cleaner sitting on the counter. Not sure if I would go back.

Waiter was lightning fast and provided sublime customer service! The quesadilla was amazing and for a price that just feels right. Free chips for the table with amazing sauces to boot. A must for anyone in the western metro area!

I’m absolutely blown away by the service at El Loro in New Hope/Crystal. Fastest food service I’ve experienced before. The food was very delicious/authentic and the drinks were fantastic! My only complaint is that the margaritas weren’t big enough 😉

I've been to several El Loros all over the metro but I only ever order one meal: the Burrrito Ruleta. This is fire 🔥! I order it every time, for the past 10 years at least and it never fails. Grilled chicken in a burrito, doused in a cheesy blanket with rice and pico de gallo on the side. Amazing. I don't have any idea what the other food in their giant menu tastes like, but you'll never go wrong with the Burrito Ruleta. I also go to El Loro if I want a margarita (frozen or ice) with a real kick. They don't bother with that watery nonsense you buy at other restaurants, El Loro gives you the real deal. Lol Lastly, I love the new location because it is bright! The Crystal location will always have a nostalgic place in my heart but I do love all the windows at the 42nd Ave place.

Yelp
Came to El Loro on a Tuesday night and they have 2 for 1 Lime Margaritas Monday-Thursday. I got the Margarita blended and it was very good. They bring out chips, salsa and white sauce right away. The chips are served warm and the white sauce is great! It tastes like a ranchy-queso. I got the quesadilla rellena with chicken, it had warm melty cheese and tons of shredded chicken with great spice, served with guac, sour cream lettuce and tomato's. We had great service and the restaurant is very clean!

Yelp
El Loro has been my go to for more than a whole decade! I used to go to the one in Brooklyn Park, MN until they stopped serving the white sauce with the salsa! I started going to this location about a year ago, and I am so glad I switched locations! Salvador and Liliana have been our servers 99% of the time and they are top tier! Super attentive and efficient service. My boyfriend and I go at least twice a month. Not to mention 2 for 1 margaritas mon-thurs! Food is fantastic and always fast to come out. Please show this place some love!! You won't regret it. Especially their burritos!

Yelp
This is the new location that was in Crystal. The decor is lively and fits the atmosphere perfectly. It is fun to look around and see the differences in all of the images present. Whenever I get a craving for Mexican food, El Loro is the only place that comes to mind. I cannot recall how many years ago I was introduced to the Eagan location. I can tell you, however, that I have been in love ever since. The food here is flavorful and wonderfully presented. Start your meal with a crispy beef taco, and add the habanero salsa roja. I am not a fan of soft tacos, so I've never had them here. I feel sure, though, that they'd be tasty. The service, like the food, is stellar. Even with the language barrier for those who don't speak Spanish, you get what you want and pronto. One of my favorite foods, besides the crispy beef taco, is Jalisco. This is a molcajete dish. There are a few of them and they're all tasty. I do not get any dish that has pineapple, as I hate that fruit. Avoiding that is easy, thankfully. I believe that you will feel glad, and rather full, when you visit El Loro. My mouth is watering as I write this review, so I know that I'll be back in short order.

Yelp
We were pleased to see an El Loro location near us! The service was excellent and our food was great! FYI right now during the week (mon-thurs) they have 2 for 1 margaritas--the lime ones only . Will be back.

Yelp
Food was like the other locations. Takeout service was quick. I don't remember a chimichanga and side guac being over $25. Yikes!

Yelp
What went well? What DIDN'T GO WELL! Drinks? 10/10 food? 10/10 service? 100/10 I am shocked that this establishment is not at 5 stars yet. Couldn't recommend enough!

Yelp
Don't eat here unless you like to be overcharged. If you don't want to bill the prices on your menu, change them. Or at least when asked about it, don't lie with some stupid line that anyone that can add can verify. If you are in the process of changing your prices, that's really all you have to say instead of lying about it. I have been going to El Loro at various locations since they started in business like 30 years ago, and honestly will probably never go back. Food is OK, service OK, prices meh, but I don't appreciate being overcharged and then lied to about it.

Yelp
Love the new El Loro! The space was colorful, nicely decorated. Great vibes, feels like you are on vacation! Same great good and service. Texas margaritas are a must try! We will be back soon :)

Yelp
Terrible food!!! I ordered taquitos Mexicanos. And got two chicken burritos with chicken and a couple onions covered in cheese water. I also order a burrito with with chorizo and I got it with burnt beans and watery chorizo again covered in cheese water. It was terrible. My bean dip had watery cheese sauce in it. My guess is they added water to stretch toy the cheese sauce. I will never go back!

Yelp
Not a good experience but I didn't expect a lot as they just opened. Ordered Togo food missing my cheese sauce. Oh we'll mistakes happen $5 dollars wasted. When I called to let them know of their mistake no answer went to answering machine. I left a message with phone number so I could let them know some other concerns as well. No call back. I got a bag of chips with 2 oz of salsa. Really is that how much u give your dine in guests? Don't cut corners durning openings. Your not your best. But at least call back a complaint and a bad yelp review won't happen.
