Watch: Carnitas Po’ Boys Are the Ideal Mexico and American Gulf Hybrid | Eater

"Run by Henry Venegas and his father in Gulfport, Mississippi, this taqueria is best known for a carnitas po' boy that marries the family's Mexican heritage with Louisiana Gulf traditions. The sandwich—essentially a Mexican-style torta served on a po' boy roll—features carnitas cooked in a large copper pot with lard, Mexican beer, soda, spices, and whole oranges, using pieces of Boston pork butt, then piled with lettuce, tomato, and avocado. Venegas describes it as versatile and hard to mess up, reflecting the shop's casual crossover approach to tacos and po' boys. The restaurant and its signature sandwich are the subject of the Southern Foodways Alliance film 'Carnitas Poboy,' which documents its story." - Eater Video

Excelente! The best street tacos and even double wrapped. Everything tasted so fresh and authentic. Can't wait to come back

Google
Amazing food if you’re a real foody this is a place you must check out I will be honest this place doesn’t look like much but food was very delicious and as soon as you walk out go to the sweet bread right next door.

Google
I couldn’t wait to get on here and review this place! We are visiting the area and when we saw hole in the wall place, or small business. We knew it would be good. Well it was amazing! We have traveled all over the US and Mexico. I can tell you this is authentic and the flavors are amazing! Nothing is over flavored or under flavored. We ordered the soup they are known for, it’s a huge bowl you will need no more food than that. We also ordered several other items to try. All incredible! If we ever come back I can assure you we will be back!

Google
Tacos here are the best tacos that I have ever eaten in my entire life. I'm here at least once a week for lunch and you should be too. It's a run down building but please don't let that dissuade you from dining here. The staff is always friendly and welcoming. Get the tacos... just get them. You won't be disappointed. The green sauce is very spicy, but it compliments the tacos so well.

Google
WE had a great dinner on August 25th. The food, service, and atmosphere was so authentic Mexican food.

Google
This place is not like most Mexican restaurants, you go up to the front counter, order something from the menu, you choose either take-out or dine-in, I ordered two chicken tacos and chose to dine-in, and the food is sent to you in no time. Plus there is a taco bar to add the toppings, I added diced onions, diced tomatoes, cilantro, pico de Gallo, and it was delicious. Not to mention it didn't cost that much, I should've gotten more. I definitely will next time.

Google
Food is really good but the service leaves something to be desired. Tacos are authentic and tasty. Didn’t get any napkins, were none at the sauce bar area, many sauces were empty, only old cilantro in the cilantro bin (you have to dress your tacos yourself with onions and cilantro), and the woman helping me really didn’t understand what I was saying. Was hard to order while at the counter with the language barrier. Other than that, food is the good point. Wish they took a little more care of the service and sauce and topping bar and had better service and it would be 5 stars easy.

Google
Coming from southern california, we were missing something here, but El Lupillo’s was just what we needed. We got quite a bit of food and everything came out hot, fresh, and delicious. I really enjoyed the birria tacos and pupusa’s. Salsa’s were spicy, our daughter loved her quesadilla, and my husband enjoyed the tacos. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
These used to be the best tacos on the coast. I came down recently for a few weeks, and had to stop by, but was greatly disappointed the decline in quality. I ordered lengua tacos, birria dipping tacos, and buche tacos. They were out of buche, so I swapped for carnitas. All of it was very dry. Meat was dry and flavorless. Tortillas were dry, no softness , no grease. I couldn't understand why the Biloxi location closed, but now I see. Too bad.
google avatar

Crystal A.

Yelp
Update: They added a salsa/topping bar which includes different salsas, toppings like radish, onion, cilantro, and lime. While I enjoy the salsa bar, and the updates like the televised menu, I did notice that the portion sizes have gotten smaller. The to-go salsa cups have dropped to half their size, and the protein portions in the tacos have also decreased. I understand updates need to be made, but I hope they know that we can tell. And it would be a shame to lose such an authentic spot in a Mexican food desert.

Yelp
Love this place and the bakery off to the left! I always get the lingua tacos. Service is quick & friendly. There are plenty of areas to sit such as tables & booths.

Anthony B.

Yelp
Some of the best Mexican food I have ever eaten in my life. Nicest people and the best service. This is REAL AUTHENTIC Mexican food.

Nick G.

Yelp
El Lupillo, the peak of the summit, this restaurant truly does! The three wonderful women working at El Lupillos are making authentic, FANTASTIC Mexican food right here in Gulfport Mississippi! I ordered the Birria, three tacos (lengua, pastor, carnitas), and a carne asada quesadilla! The birria I ate in house because that is super juicy and I didn't want to wait to get home. WOW I am glad I didn't wait. It was absolutely wonderful. The flavor. The juiciness. The quality. The consomé was outstanding! Everything was very reasonably priced for just how much you get. Mississippi - if you let this place slip through the cracks, if you don't help them survive you will be relegated to fakes, and imitation Mexican food. They don't deserve that but your taste buds especially don't deserve that. Will edit once I'm home and eat the rest but just off the service and the birria it's a 5/5 STARS!

Yelp
Call me Loca I went there twice just to make sure I wasn't tripping. so clearly I'm black. lol I'm iCalifornia and I really love it. Clearly cashier with the blonde hair was so rude the first time I asked for extra salsa and she told me no I haven't asked to pay for it and she's like what's inside of the container is enough. The next time I went there with my husband, me and him mentioned Jarritos which he loves. She literally said fountain drinks only when clearly there were three in there. Now I'm irritated I'm clearly hungry. We get our food to get our fountain drink and he discovered a beetle in his damn mess of chicken that was on his plate and I just asked for a full refund for both items and she said no and took the food.... So I'm like wow Okay B -Word and left. The inside is a whole in the wall feels very clean but quick to get your food.
google avatar

Chris U.

Yelp
The food and drinks were amazing, service was okay, and the ambiance is pretty quiet due to low customer count. Some tables were sticky and the juice bar had a lot of fruit flies everywhere but nonetheless food was 10/10
google avatar

Riley W.

Yelp
My husband and I love going here for some real tacos. We usually get 3 and that fills us up plenty. Just to note that their menus do not reflect their new prices so if your total seems to be more expensive than you thought, then that's why.
google avatar

Donald C.

Yelp
Delicious! They should charge double haha sshhh.. I got the beef burrito and it was one of the best I've ever had. The little old lady was great. So awesome!

Yelp
Best taco I have had in Biloxi so far. Perfectly seasoned meat (got the pastor and chicken) So there is no taco Tuesday specials :( ... the tacos are 2.50$. They do have a good selection of meats including the beef tongue (lengua) on top of the typical pastor, steak, chicken. They have a decent salsa bar too. The eating place is not clean to the restaurant standard by any stretch of the imagination (as clean as my home though lol) with none of the tables cleaned from prior people eating, the floor with garbage and food/pop stains abound. Shockingly this place got a A health standard most recently (in the past look like some C grades). You can see them cooking which is nice. They do use packaged tortillas which are not the best which seems standard in Biloxi. It took 20 min to get two tacos during the later part of lunch (at 1pm) with only one cook (which is a little long for a quick taco). Overall before the food came I was thinking no way will I be back, but then after the delicious tacos will likely be back. Update: went back at 7pm when it was a lot less crowded. The tables and floor were cleaner. I had to get the chicken again since it is so good, and also tried to steak, which was equally amazing. It only took 2 minutes to get the tacos. The salsas are realThey have a 10% military discount too. They give you plenty of lime as well. Going to increase my star rating to a five from a four. Update: went with my girlfriend who has lived in Houston and San Diego (so I have frequented there too) and she agrees these are some of the best or the best tacos we have had!
google avatar

Yelp
I had a hankering for some authentic tacos and this place did not disappoint! My husband is from California and said he felt like he was home again. The Birria is to die for, the steak is so flavorful, and the chicken was juicy. I can't wait to try the pork and beef tongue. We will 100% be frequenting this gem! If you love tacos... run to this place asap.

Yelp
The first time I ever came here was during a visit from San Diego with my relatives who moved here and found it to be the closest to home they'd found. The woman at the register had a stank attitude, and it didn't feel the cleanest. The food was just okay. Update: I came here the other day because they convinced me the carne asada tacos were worth it. So I was willing to try again. But when I walked to the door, it was locked - at 12:40 pm right during lunch There was a woman sitting at a table who looked up and ignored me. When I knocked she held up ten fingers and another five- WTF? 15 minutes I mouthed? She rolled her eyes, nodded and went back to eating. I kid you not! A gentleman came up to the door while I was there and I told him she'd said 15 minutes. He gave a disgusted look and went back to his car. I got back in the car and left, never to return. When I informed my relatives of her sign language they relayed that was the third time they'd come and found the door locked! They said they seemed to have gotten cocky - for what I don't know cuz it's a raggedy taco shop compared to my home town. Anyway, save yourself time, aggravation and money - the tacos are inconsistent and apparently they don't need the business. Go to El Rancho down the street instead and order the carne asada street tacos - they are the real deal and much nicer.

Yelp
Soy un gran rando. A short time ago, in a land not so far away, I found myself looking for dinner. My requirements were: unique, reasonable, and available for pickup. El Lupillo was not too far from where I was so I gave it a shot. If you find yourself in Gulfport and want authentic tacos and fast, reasonable Mexican Food, this is the place you should stop. My first impression of this place was a bit odd. I walked inside to an empty restaurant (it was late) with very loud music playing over the speakers. There was a small child behind the counter staring at me as if I was a giant rando (I am) and a worker lying on the ground under a piece of kitchen equipment. I first thought I had walked in on a robbery gone bad, but quickly realized it was close to closing and the worker was fixing something. When he realized I was standing there he went and got another worker who handled my order. It seemed like I was a container short so I checked and discovered that my torta was unfounded. They went ahead and made it while I waited so I had a little time to wander around the building. That is when I discovered the single greatest thing about this place. In the corner of the restaurant there was a taco fixings bar which had everything this rando could have hoped for. Limes, chipotles in adobo, onions, many different salsas, lettuce, hot sauce, and much more. Luckily for me they also had to-go containers and I loaded up on chipotles and salsa. The drive home was about 20 difficult minutes. It was difficult because I wanted to grab some tacos and chow down. Once home I did just that and I was very happy. The kind of happy you get when you bite into a lengue, barbacoa, carnitas, or steak taco. Yeah. They were damn good. You might think of tacos as a simple and hard to mess up dish. They kind of are, but they kind of aren't as well. These are legit tacos. The torta was good, but the tacos were the star of the show. If they would have used Nola style french bread it would have been better, but again, that isn't likely authentic and this place was most definitely the real deal. If you find yourself in the port of the Gulf and want real and real good tacos, you need to check out El Lupillo.

Yelp
Tacos!! Go eat the tacos here. They are the besr in the area. Hopefully the music won't be too loud when you go. They also have minudo on the weekends the looked awesome.
google avatar

Heather C.

Yelp
Transplant from Texas and have been looking for good breakfast tacos and street tacos. This place fit the bill on street tacos. We've tried a whole lot of "Mexican" places in the area all without that authentic taste of spice, cilantro, and lime. Definitely a new favorite place to go. We all tried tacos and my littles got a quesadilla. Great service and staff as well. We will be frequent flyers! My food didn't last long enough for a before picture.
google avatar

Beth H.

Yelp
Drink machine was broken. This is closer to authentic Mexican food as opposed to the typical "Tex Mex" you get elsewhere. Be prepared for that. No chips / salsa appetizer like the typical chain Mexican place. Food was good and prepared quickly.
google avatar

John F.

Yelp
2 of 3 things we ordered we threw in the trash. It is hard to mess up a quesadilla . I have been all over the country of Mexico and by far this is the MOST DISGUSTING Mexican food I have EVER eaten. Even the pictures on the wall of their food looked gross. The tacos of carne asada were cooked in catsup ! My wife's burrito was DISGUSTING They put cottage cheese in it. Except the tiny quesadilla for 6 bucks , we took 2 bites and threw all in the trash. I feel sorry for Gulfport people who think this place is good. It's not even bad, it's GROSS ... UN ASCO .. LA COMIDA ES FATAL ! LO PEORE !!

Olive O.

Yelp
Don't recommend this place at all. I ordered a taco and found a beetle inside the taco.
google avatar

Andrew J.

Yelp
The type of bread was unexpected for a torta advertised with a picture of a classic sandwich. When I was ordering, the staff referred to it as a Po Boy which was weird even though I was asking for a torta. She also didn't seem to know that pork was el pastor in spanish. Confusing experience.
google avatar

John Adam H.

Yelp
Best tacos in Gulfport by far! Small menu and a hole in the wall?! Doesn't get much better!
google avatar

Pri M.

Yelp
Just found my favorite Mexican restaurant. Authentic Mexican style restaurant reminds me of San Diego Mexican restaurants. Salsa bar with vegetables, HORCHATA, and real authentic tacos. Simply delicious!
google avatar

Jamie D.

Yelp
If you find yourself in Biloxi,MS please do yourself a favor and stop by El Lupillo for some mouth watering, authentic Mexican tacos. That's all.
google avatar

Gjovhanna W.

Yelp
Ordered for delivery and had a hair in one of my tacos.... I'm from California and these were ok..... not food from home at all. Just go to Cali or South America for real tacos! And to top it off... they drowned the taco in sour cream!

Rhys L.

Yelp
Birria estaba muy buena pero necesita más sazón y más consomé sería mejor. Lo recomiendo.
google avatar

chery w.

Yelp
This is the most authentic Mexican Taco place out here! The tacos are full size not the mini street tacos. The tortillas are fresh and the meat is well seasoned. The pastor taste like pastor and the carnitas are moist not dried out. They have a great selection of beer too. Will definitely be coming back here
google avatar

Randy M.

Yelp
The tortas are huge and delicious. I love the salsa too. Didn't expect much, especially for Mississippi, but I plan to make this my go to for Mexican.
google avatar

Dawn T.

Yelp
This place is authentic Mexican food! Ordered 3 types of street tacos (asada, pollo, carnitas) and horchata. It came with a green and red sauce that were so good and spicy! Everything was amazing! So much that I ordered take out the next week. The food is freshly cooked. I like the menu is small and easy to choose from. I want to try their birrea tacos next!
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
Hands down amazing Mexican food! I had the loaded quesadilla which means you can add a meat. My wife had the carne, pollo, pastor which are all amazing. I definitely recommend to anyone and will come back when we travel through.
google avatar

Athiel A.

Yelp
Tacos are very similar to what you would see in San Diego. The lengua, carnitas, and carne asada tacos are worth trying (lengua being the best). Good tacos, but the building is disgusting and DIRTY! There was hair that come out of the water/soda dispenser, tiny bugs in the cilantro, and my pico de Gallo tasted like it was prepped a week ago. The person taking orders had a nasty attitude. Please redirect your taco cravings elsewhere!
google avatar

Berta M.

Yelp
I was super excited to try this place on a taco Tuesday based off the reviews I read. However when I went up to order I was completely deflated. The women who took our order seemed annoyed that I couldn't order in Spanish, like the women before me, and scoffed when I asked if I could try three different meats in the Flacos Tacos. She made me feel like I wasn't Latino enough to be in there honestly. Not to mention how salty the tacos were, actually salty cannot even describe the amount of salt in the meat. We still tasted salt the next day. Overall completely disappointed.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Great food great service exactly what I was looking for. Very authentic. Hit the spot
google avatar

Brandon M.

Yelp
Really good food! Some of the best street tacos on the coast! Highly recommend stopping by!

Briana M.

Yelp
I do have to say that the food came as soon as we sat down after ordering. The portions were fairly big. Although that does not make up for the fact that the meat was drowning in grease. Some of the meat was not enjoyable to chew on. The seasoning was salty. They asked if I wanted cheese, however, there's no hint of cheese. It could be just mixed in with the grease. The beans were watered down. The only thing on the plate that we liked was the rice. For $10.49, it's not worth it. I'm sure there are some other things on the menu that was good, but I didn't see anything.
google avatar

Toni W.

Yelp
Surprisingly great authentic tacos for $2.50 The complex it's in is creepy but don't mind, staff is friendly and restaurant has a A grade. Will definitely go back.
google avatar

Jasmine W.

Yelp
There wasn't very many options on the menu which was okay because I mainly came for tacos and rice and beans. The carne asada tacos were okay.. I was starving so they were fine for the time being. But being from California I was very disappointed. The flavor I was looking for just wasn't there. The rice and beans I didn't even eat no matter how starving I was. The rice was very hard and the beans were watery. I won't be going back which makes me sad cause I was really looking forward to trying this place.
google avatar

Tony L.

Yelp
Perfect spot if you love authentic tacos This is my new favorite restaurant in the area.only 2.50 per taco and a salsa bar too and cold beer..Sorry folks but a tear just came to my eye lol .. if you don't try this place then you do not like tacos and these ain't no American tacos they're authentic Mexican with corn tortilla shells and they are very very very good very affordable order them to go or eat them there with your favorite beer the first time I went. I ate 4 their And took three home and ate them for dinner the next day stuck them in the oven and they were fresh and good luck new love this place it's the best if they were open now I would go eat there for breakfast LOL I took a picture I will try to upload it
google avatar

Frank J.

Yelp
I love the tacos here, you'll not find any on the coast besides here. If you love real street tacos, then this is the place to go. Then after you get done eating the best tacos in the world, there's a bakery next door that has the best cakes.
google avatar

Naomi W.

Yelp
Come here for THE BEST tacos. This is a great example of a "hole in a wall" place. They cook it on a flat top that is easily visible if you wanted to see them make it and it's made to order. I wish I could've gone more often in the 2 months I was there!
google avatar

Ray N.

Yelp
Wow, definitely worth the 4.5 star rating on yelp. It's a hole in a wall and there's not a lot on the menu. But what they do have, it's perfect. I tried their asada, pastor, carnitas and lengua. The carnitas were probably the best cuz I liked the crunch of the pork, almost like chicharon. I don't usually eat Lengua (beef tongue) but this is some of the best I've had. If you've never had it, this would be the place to try it. It's so soft and flavorful, it's almost like eating bone morrow.
google avatar

Tania R.

Yelp
I ordered a steak quesadilla & I was pleasantly surprised!!! It was the best quesadilla I've had in such a long time. My husband ordered chicken and rice smothered in queso & absolutely loved it as well! We visited the other El Lupillo, a little closer to base, and it's not the same franchise. So we make sure to drive a little farther to order from this one.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
Delicious torta and tacos! Butter on the bread, tortilla, salsa bar, amazing pastor, beef tongue and carnitas. Fresh veggies. Just perfect. Not much of an ambiance but the food is amazing. Mexican TV.
google avatar

Aaron K.

Yelp
Perfect Taco's! Great Experience! Hands down the best tacos in Gulfport!! I would recommend 10/10 times.! Must try the Lengua Tacos! I will be back and will definitely spread the word about this place!

Ambar H.

Yelp
This place use to be mine and my group of friend's favorite place, as for many coworkers on base. We would go at least twice a week. Recently rumors arose about this place, explaining there were cockroaches. Did not believe this rumor ... UNTIL Taco Tuesday came and as usual, that's we're friends would meet up for lunch, except today we decided to order and go back to base to eat. We all ordered tacos except for one of the guys he ordered a torta, when a HUGE cockroach came out of the sandwich!!! Then we started picking at the tacos, and sure enough, we found 2 more. Health inspectors need to re-examine this place!!!
google avatar

William C.

Yelp
I've eaten here 5 or 6 times and the food is consistently great! I never heard the term street tacos before, so I went to check it out. I took a friend of mine from California with me, and he's the one that told me that these are called street tacos. Whatever they are they are excellent, and made fresh right in front of your eyes. All the ingredients are fresh, there is a small bar with different sauces and garnishes. The taco shells aren't crunchy, rather kind of semi soft corn tortillas but they are excellent! Only $2.50 for an overloaded, killer taco, Plus a nice selection of imported beers to choose from. The food here is great the people are very nice and I highly recommend trying it out!
google avatar

Tracy D.

Yelp
Came from San Diego California six months ago and I've been looking for a real Mexican taco shop. Just found it! Tacos are the bomb! And they have all the Mexican beers too (which are hard to find around here)
google avatar

Lane R.

Yelp
I have travelled all around the south with work and scope out the best tacos in town. These are the best I've had anywhere outside of Houston on the I-10 corridor. The asada, lengua, and carnitas are the way to go. Also, the self serve sauce station compete with radish and orange is perfect. The orange sauce is ubiquitous across any decent taco place, but this is the real deal. Just right coupled with the savory meats, cilantro and onion. Couple with a cane sugar Coca Cola and you will leave very pleased.
google avatar

Pykee C.

Yelp
I've never been in Gulfport, Biloxi or anywhere in Mississippi before and to my surprise there are lots of Mexican restaurants on every corner. I've tried several places and this place by far has the most authentic, mouthwatering, well marinated, inexpensive street tacos! They have different meat variety for your tacos like asada, lenguas, carnitas, buche, pastor, and pollo. Not only that you can pair it with their Domestic or Imported beer selection and/or with their Mexican sodas (Jarritos & Coke). Hands down they the best street tacos I've ever had in the south! Having come from a big city close to the Mexican border. I highly recommend this place before going anywhere else. It's a hole in wall with great & cheap street tacos!

Noah M.

Yelp
EASILY one of the best mexican restraunts around. The pastor street tacos are a chefs kiss. Food comes out very quick and prices are good. Staff is friendly.
google avatar

Bryan W.

Yelp
I orders three tacos and a bottle of coke. I tried the chicken, steak, and pork stomach. Steak and pork were amazing!! Chicken was good, but not amazing. If you are wanting authentic and delicious food definitely stop by here. The sign says El Rancho outside. AMAZING. These tacos may have changed my life
