Soy un gran rando.
A short time ago, in a land not so far away, I found myself looking for dinner. My requirements were: unique, reasonable, and available for pickup. El Lupillo was not too far from where I was so I gave it a shot. If you find yourself in Gulfport and want authentic tacos and fast, reasonable Mexican Food, this is the place you should stop.
My first impression of this place was a bit odd. I walked inside to an empty restaurant (it was late) with very loud music playing over the speakers. There was a small child behind the counter staring at me as if I was a giant rando (I am) and a worker lying on the ground under a piece of kitchen equipment. I first thought I had walked in on a robbery gone bad, but quickly realized it was close to closing and the worker was fixing something. When he realized I was standing there he went and got another worker who handled my order.
It seemed like I was a container short so I checked and discovered that my torta was unfounded. They went ahead and made it while I waited so I had a little time to wander around the building. That is when I discovered the single greatest thing about this place.
In the corner of the restaurant there was a taco fixings bar which had everything this rando could have hoped for. Limes, chipotles in adobo, onions, many different salsas, lettuce, hot sauce, and much more. Luckily for me they also had to-go containers and I loaded up on chipotles and salsa.
The drive home was about 20 difficult minutes. It was difficult because I wanted to grab some tacos and chow down. Once home I did just that and I was very happy. The kind of happy you get when you bite into a lengue, barbacoa, carnitas, or steak taco. Yeah. They were damn good. You might think of tacos as a simple and hard to mess up dish. They kind of are, but they kind of aren't as well. These are legit tacos.
The torta was good, but the tacos were the star of the show. If they would have used Nola style french bread it would have been better, but again, that isn't likely authentic and this place was most definitely the real deal.
If you find yourself in the port of the Gulf and want real and real good tacos, you need to check out El Lupillo.
