Essential Latinx Food Experiences in Los Angeles’s Boyle Heights District - AFAR

"A four-story 'little market' shopping center offering a broad array of Mexican specialties and services: an International Deli that stocks about a dozen mole pastes (mole can be made with up to 40 ingredients), cheeses, candied membrillo, sauces, fresh salsas, and large jars of agua frescas. The marketplace also houses a travel agent, acupuncture, leather goods, and restaurants often booked for big parties or quinceañeras. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, with music and morning mariachi rehearsals; much of the market has reopened and moved outdoors." - Tim Chester

El Mercado De Los Angeles! El Mercado de Los Angeles is a wonderful place to go and explore the latin food and desserts with little shops selling different stuff like toys, dresses, shirts of God or la virgen, belts, boots, jeans, El Niño dios, Customized shirts and more. The food is delicious at Tacos 5 De Mayo, I got Carne Asada Fries with everything on them they were delicious. I didn’t expect the Carne Asada Fries to be a big portion. They served me a big portion of Carne Asada Fries With a Mexican coke. 👀 My mom got a Pozole she said it was delicious! The caldo de pollo has chicken with carrots, squash, and cabbage. She also got a Mexican coke. My dad got a mole dish he said: It was alright for those that like really sweet the mole not for him but others do like it sweet not him. He got a jugo de horchata And for dessert we got Un Chocomil from Chocomiles (CREMI) they have so many flavors! I got Maza Pan parents got Pistache, and Nuez. So delicious dessert makes me think of me being at Mexico! The place also has the parking in the back with the Virgin De Guadalupe really beautiful to take pictures. One thing I don’t like is the front view of El Mercado wish it was better doesn’t look open.

Some of these things are pricey but if you think about it at least you didn’t have to drive to Mexico or pay shipping. Amazing genuine, hand-made items like clothing, accessories, etc. it truly makes one feel like you’re in Mexico. Parking is complicated if it’s packed but free in the lots behind.

Google
March 2024 I really enjoyed exploring this area. Culturally it was really interesting, seeing all the different Mexican goods and foods. I spent a good hour or more here. I had a Mexican tripe wrap and crème caramel from the restaurants inside and they were very tasty and authentic. I highly recommend this spot but just be aware that many of the shopkeepers and workers can't speak English so there may be communication difficulties.

Google
A great place to shop for authentic Mexican wares, and they sell everything from adornments to clothes. The food vendors are great they outdo themselves every year. The food places inside sell amazing food. There is parking, its just too bad they built the apartment building in front of it. The apartments are a separate entity.

Google
They have so much to offer, humble and food everywhere, also free parking. It's 2 floors, awesome.😎

Very old, looks run down. Could use a renovation. Inside there is alot of vendors selling Mexican products. Parking is packed, hard to find a space.

Google
This place is a childhood staple for my family. If you're in LA and craving authentic Mexican snacks, this is the place to go! They have snack stands as well as small shops selling clothes, hygiene products, food, and so much more. My go-to at this spot is the Nieves and the Esquites Cocidos—definitely a must-try! The prices are affordable, and while parking can be packed depending on the day of the week, in my experience, a little patience goes a long way. The staff is also helpful in guiding you to a parking spot.

Roberto Salazar

Google
Everything is so expensive in there the boat place belts everything restaurants everything is super expensive. In the day when it was so quiet there was some people p there was people out there playing their ice creams and everything else the churo man we payed $7dollers for some iquimpy chiros small.like why day were not good. And the people that go and deliver stuff supposed to deliver and go and there was a lot of cars parked right there why why

Yelp
El Mercadito in East L.A. is my entire childhood! I have so many memories with my late father here - such a nostalgic place. I remember eating in the 2nd floor restaurant almost every Friday where my father sang with the mariachi. El Mercadito is basically a large Mexican bazaar where you can find everything Mexican - from shampoo, to medications, to traditional Mexican clothing and food. It's a bit run-down and hygiene of the restaurants is questionable but that's part of its charm. They have a parking lot that can get crowded on weekends. I recommend coming here during the week when it's much less busy.

Yelp
Stopped by on Saturday, 05/31/25 for the first time in the morning! This place is truly the best! Boyfriend introduced me to an ice cream place here - he got the vanilla flavor and I got the guava flavor ($8 each for a medium size, huge and generous portions!) I also tried out an elote for $4 but ended up throwing it away as the corn was very stale and not fresh. Boyfriend bought some churros and it was great. A great place to support local small businesses. There are restaurants inside however in terms of the cleanliness of the place and food - questionable... This place also hosts a night market which is something on my bucket list to visit next time. I loved the ice cream so much!

Yelp
Stopped in for a visit after work on a weekday and it's not crowded at all. Free private lot parking right behind it so it's easy to check it out. I walked the entire two floors and you can buy all sorts of things like cowboy boots, T-shirts or sweaters, to various kinds of mole, spices, teas. They also have a butcher there! Snack stalls were there too like flan, drinks, churros. Restaurants were on the 2nd floor. I stopped by one to get some tamales to go and they were the only ones selling other kinds (chicken, pork, oaxaqueno-$4 since it's bigger), $3 each, where everyone else was only selling tamal de elote. For dinner, I stopped by El Gallito and tried their chile rojo nopales plate with rice, beans and tortillas. Wanted to try something different rather than my usual huevos con nopales and this was delicious, however, it was a bit too spicy for me. Luckily I packed the rest home and it made a nice lunch the next day. All vendors and staff are friendly as I looked around and practiced my Spanglish. Cool place to check out if you have never been!

Yelp
Happy Cinco De Mayo! yesterday I was in search for a cute fiesta dress for my toddler, and I knew exactly where to go El Mercadito ! I found the dress I wanted at the first store I stepped foot in. I personally don't know Spanish, but they did have an English speaking Worker there so I appreciate that. They were very patient and helpful. Happy customer:) not to mention they do offer a wide variety of Mexican food just an FYI, but I was in a rush so I didn't get to try anything maybe next time.

Yelp
We went to experience this popular market in east LA. They had lots of vendors and really good local authentic Mexican food. The Pan was the softest/freshest ever.
google avatar

Jose Y.

Yelp
It's always good time coming here, all types of vendors. Some of the restaurants are a hit or miss but the food vendors near the parking area are amazing. The candy shops are way too expensive but they do have a wide variety. Omg and the cheese variety is on point. The parking lot can get crazy at time but it's worth it.
google avatar

Yelp
Came by on a weekday as I was in the area. Pretty open and not crazy packed like it gets in the weekend. Most of the restaurants and snack places are pretty good here. They have their own parking lot but it's packed during the weekends. Tons of pottery, clothes, children's toys, food vendors and much more. Sanrio lover's dream, medium 12 inch plush was about $15-18 depending on vendor. Definitely walk around first and ask about pricing first before you purchase.

J C.

Yelp
Went to El Mercadito this past weekend and was sad to see that the mariachi restaurants on the 3rd floor are no longer in business. Apparently they never reopened after the pandemic. There are still are a couple places to sit for a meal on the 2nd floor, just no dueling mariachis.

Yelp
A staple of East LA, hadn't been in years and I'm so amazed how it's still the same but yet so different! With some old time favorites still in business selling the best gorditas, I also discovered some more new and great shops. The one restraint we ate at had great service and delicious food! El Mercadito is basically a little market with different food stands, leather goods shops, natural herb botanicals, panaderias but my personal favorite was stumbling upon this milkshake shop!!! Just like in Mexico! So many delicious flavors, and served in a plastic bag with straw just like in Mexico!! Definitely bright back so many great memories! They even now have a section of the parking lot packed with food vendors. Personally not my favorite because parking has always and still is bad and now with the food vendors taking up over a large portion of the passing lot, NOT GOOD!! I'm sure there weekdays are the best time to go.

Yelp
Un muy buen lugar para disfrutar de una gran variedad de postres y compras en general de México y Centro América el ambiente es un poco ajitado pero el servicio de los locales comerciales es exelente. A very good place to enjoy a wide variety of desserts and general shopping from Mexico and Central America. The atmosphere is a bit hectic, but the service at the stores is excellent.
google avatar

Christine L.

Yelp
We actually came out as a family to get dinner while shopping for mole but didn't realize on Saturday nights part of the parking lot becomes a night market! Man is it packed. Mostly food vendors (there is 1 bakery and toy vendor) but lots of cuisine from Mexico to South America. We stood in line for Guatamalan food for huarache and some agua fresca. Kiddo wanted the spiral fried potato. Cool scene lots to choose but you have to stand to eat. There are some portable tables in the middle to put your plates on (if you can find space). After we ate we went to the actual mercadito to get the mole. Such a cool establishment and institution. Support them!

Yelp
8/30/23 Hubby's on a roll, we left Plaza Mexico and headed here. This is a Boyle Heights favorite & a place near n dear to most Angeles who grew up in East LA. Hubby bought his Stetson here many eons ago. What was once a sprawling go-to for shopping is now filled with many closed shops. It is about a quarter of the size of Plaza Mexico. It boasts almost the same shops: eateries, candy shops, clothing, shies, boots n cowboy hats-I even saw saddles for horses but that shop is not open. The Mariachi restaurant is temporarily closed (as the sign stated). I bought cinnamon sticks to make my own cafe de olla & Hubby had trouble finding s shop that sold Diet Coke (in a place that could somehow feature diabetes as an extra added bonus. Way too many stalls featuring sugar laden treats. Hey, if it's eaten once in a blue moon, perhaps not so bad for a little treat. Of course I couldn't pass up coconut meat with chile n limon. It was a nice stroll along memory lane for Hubby.

Yelp
Such a beautiful mural of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Parking is a beast. Will definitely come back to get authentic Mexican gear and apparel including cowboy hats, books, leather, sarape. Really want the Hello Kitty sarape. Lots of places to eat and snack, and you can find all the Mexican candy that you miss. There's a Mariachis restaurant on the 3rd floor that we should try out as well. Come get the freshly roasted peanuts from the young vendors too. Will come back for Christmas shopping!

morgan e.

Yelp
We paid tons of money for FAKE labubu's here. Unbelievable. My kid is sobbing about it. Not only are they clearly fake but one of them came damaged in the box the head looks like it's going to pop off and is at a funny angle. This is really ridiculous and we shouldn't have even tried buying them some microtrend from TikTok doll. Now we have to try to return them and the whole thing has been an expensive time suck. Steer clear or open the box in the store.

. ..

Yelp
I purchased this honey at a store on the first floor by the corner of indoor vendors I used the honey instead of sugar. I kept thinking it was the my tea or cereal. Finally I realized this is not real honey. It absolutely does not smell or taste like honey. The young lady charged me $15.00. It went in the trash.

Yelp
Always nice to have all kinds of food and desserts outside the restaurant environment, beer ( micheladas) included. Weekends only.
google avatar

Anna F.

Yelp
Such a fun place! There's a little something for everyone. The only thing is there is no AC here so it makes for a warm shopping experience, but it was tolerable. Found parking on-site and spent about 2 hours here. Looking forward to coming back very soon.

Bertha C.

Yelp
Small, but there's good stuff. I love the gorditas (food in general) at the restaurant and the mole poblano sold by the pound with a lady. It gives off a little feel like Mexico mercardos.

Melina F.

Yelp
The food the ambiance is so cultural I love el Mercadito. Especially the service and I love how hardworking everyone there is. I love this place I get bionics especially

Yelp
Navigating through the labyrinth of shops on the various floors of El Mercadito de Los Angeles, it's easy to lose track of time and be immersed in the multifaceted landscape of sharp aromas, exotic products, live music, sounds, and vibrant colors. It seems like every shop carries unique products you will not find anywhere else except Mexico or maybe Olvera Street. And if you like to bargain or haggle, this is a place where price tags are rare, and prices are negotiable for non-food products. On the lower floor, you can find cool hats, leather goods, cowboy clothing, boots, serapes, blankets, religious statues, crosses, Quinceanera supplies, ceramics, incense, herbal teas, remedies, and food snacks. Walking around here felt surreal in some ways---as if I walked into a 3D Salvador Dali painting. On the second floor, there are clothing, arts, spices, mole, crafts, dried food products, grocery, and Mexican Candy stores to visit. On the top floor, there are restaurants, bars and live music. As you slowly aisle shop, and move from one shop to the next, store owners are waiting patiently to invite you to step inside their shop and take a look. All types of colorful Mexican products can be bought here--from the bizarre to the simple. This place is a mecca for all types of Dia de Los Muertos products, pinatas, delicious food, and clothing. El Mercadito offers a free parking lot and is usually crowded to busy most times.

Yelp
"Diamond in the rough" "Little piece of Mexico" Accurate. Accurate. Accurate! You can easily spend an hour to two hours here. There's several food stands and plenty of items to purchase. If you've never been then you 110% need to go. Great selection of spices and traditional items from Mexico.
google avatar

J B.

Yelp
Free parking in their lot(s) with directional assistance from staff is always a huge plus! No A/C but fans were on and doors were open. We ended up eating at El Gallito. The service was super friendly. Not the most popular option at the time we went, but the food was great! Loved the great corn masa flavor and texture (and generous portion) of the masa quesadilla. The meat, while not otherworldly, was flavorful and there was just the right amount of cheese to match. The complimentary chips and salsa were good, solid standard quality.
google avatar

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
If you ever wanted to have fun and shop at the same time this place is for you. Now, it is not pretty, you are not going to Saks or even Walmart, you are going to a traditional Mexican, 3 stories, of food, shopping, dinning, drinking and fun. It is a huge place with more vendors than I can count. If you want a belt or hat from Mexico they have that. Looking for comfy clothes, they have that. If you just want to walk around and eat at all the vendors you can do that. They also have a restaurant and it is great. Parking is easy in their lot. The place gets crowded on the weekends, so I go on a weekday. Be nice to the vendors, not all of them speak English, but you will figure it out and they are so nice. This is just a must.
google avatar

Monica G.

Yelp
So...this is really a diamond in the rough for sure, and soooo worth the drive from Orange County! My husband and I ate here last weekend too and thoroughly enjoyed it. When you enter, depending on what time you get there, parking is pretty rough. It is organized though! The parking attendants/security guide you, and you do eventually find a spot. When you walk a little and enter there are vendors outside in a different lot. Flowers, masks, hats, shoes, cookware, EVERYTHING. There's 2 outdoor restaurants and the food smells soooo good and looks even better. Then you enter the "hall" which is a big U shaped down stairs with restaurants upstairs. Downstairs there's raspados, nachos, smoothies, juices, churros, bunuelos...everything. Hats, scarves, panchos, boots, hats, body care products, vitamins, shirts, and more...even a hair salon! And the food? BOMB! I wish I had more pictures but we gobbled everything down 2 weekends in a row before I got pictures lol. Lily's has the best pan dulce EVER and man....I just can not get enough. I'm pretty sure we will be back probably next weekend...and the weekend after that. Enjoy El Mercadito!

Yelp
Don't come to this place is a mess since you arrived the employees from the parking lot think they're the owners they decided if you can come to vip parking lot or if they send you far away!! Never coming back
google avatar

Gaby L.

Yelp
I went yesterday for the first time and ate there. Within 5 minutes, my entire body began to itch, turn red, and hive up. I went to the hospital where I was told I had a severe allergic reaction to something I ate. I have never had any type of food allergies before this. Unfortunately, the phone numbers listed on El Mercadito's Yelp page and Google do not work and the "voicemail box" is full. I tried calling multiple times to ask them for the ingredients on the dish I ate so that I can avoid it in the future... I'm hoping they read this and contact me soon.
google avatar

Marjorie C.

Yelp
Best churros are served here!!! I didn't even have it with ice cream or the crème you dip it in and it was still so delicious. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The entire market was hot and crowded but there are little stores suitable for all ages. There are bathrooms upstairs and downstairs. Would definitely come back!!

Esmeralda G.

Yelp
Food was really good and authentic Mexican food. Went there with family and we all ordered different plates and all where good

Rafael H.

Yelp
Went to have dinner just to find out 3rd floor was closed no good food for me to try that sucks

Cyl C.

Yelp
First time visiting this place this last Sunday. I was excited to checkout all the items for sale and the food that they offered as well. We were lucky enough to beat the afternoon rush and snagged a parking in the smaller lot nearby since the larger lot was mostly full. The location had little shops outside and a two story building with more vendors in the bottom floor and the top floor that had mostly restaurants/vendors offering food items. It didn't take too long for us to walk through the shops before settling down to eat. I love being able to visit these kinds of places with the fiancé since this reminds him of when he use to live in Mexico, but also let's me get a feel for his home too. Definitely walked away with a full stomach, poncho for myself, and clothes for the dogs!

A. R.

Yelp
There's a few food stalls, plenty of agua fresca choices, and a panaderia. There are lots of vendors selling toys, clothes, and ceramics. When I got there at 9:30am, there were a few vendors that weren't open yet. It wasn't until 10:30am when all the vendors were open. Some had good deals, others I thought were a little pricey. I understand some things are hand made and others may be imported but the prices didn't seem fair. Not sure if I'll come back to shop but I'll definitely come for the food, aguas, and candy.
google avatar

Nando V.

Yelp
Honestly If you are visiting and want to go somewhere to get out the hotel room I'd say come check this place out. Its koo but the stuff they sell isnt my cup of tea. The food here is fire af but they do be taxing the heck out of it. I paid 5 bucks for one, yes one quesabirria taco. They were hella good tho so I ordered 6! Lol 3 for me and 3 for my wife. They have lots of spots to eat in the second floor. The first floor has lots of stuff for sale but, like I said they do tax the heck out of everything. Theres ample parking (check me out using fancy words YEEEE) ohh i will say they do sell my all time favorite agua fresca flavor. They sell orange agua fresca thats my all time favorite! Make sure to ask for ice tho cuz it was a lil to sweet. But its was great! 1 more thing. Theres normally 3 floors opened but when I went the third floor was closed. Maybe next year when I go back they'll be open.
google avatar

Geovanna K.

Yelp
Always the best place for Mexican snacks, the service is nice, super fast. So look at the stuff before ordering.

Joe B.

Yelp
Food: I had a terrific gordita with pork and green chili. It was fresh and well prepared. I also bought some Mexican style snacks. Such as candied peanuts, cajeta, and nut bar. All very authentic and delicious. Service: Most vendors spoke only Spanish. Not really a big problem. They were eager to help. Ambience: It's just like shopping in a local market in Mexico. A beautiful array of very vibrant colors with all sorts of Mexican handicrafts. There is a bakery selling pan dulce. There is a butcher counter selling all types of meats. There is a counter offering Mexican delicacies, such candied camote, calabasa and all types of nuts and seeds for snacking. Summary: It's a great place to spend a day. It offers something for everyone. Lots of toys and notions for the kids. Mexican style embroidered clothing, housewares and much more for women. Boots, shoes, belts, saddles and all types of leather crafts. If you are hungry for a bite to eat there are booths selling all kinds of delicious tacos, burritos, gorditas, agua frescas, and anything else you could desire. And to top it all off...free parking. So for a great day without spending a bunch of money, give the Mercadito a visit. I know I will be coming back soon.

Vanessa T.

Yelp
Love this place! Good food, anything you need they have, food, candies, deserts, clothes, shoes, kitchen utensils, jewelry, anything Mexican they got it. Love it here.
google avatar

Iris M.

Yelp
Depends was way better before coronavirus hit downstairs has really nice treats like churros , aguas frescas , and a quick snack nice little market
google avatar

Christina M.

Yelp
We came here on a weekend. There is a private parking lot that is super crowded, but they have people trying to help navigate the parking. There are a bunch of shops selling food, drinks, sweets, clothes, toys, jewelry, household items, .... You can even get your nails done here. I would probably come back for the drinks and treats when nearby.
google avatar

Rohitesh M.

Yelp
It is a ritual to come here anytime I am visiting LA. Great selection of vendors to explore and get the best deal for your budget. I can never leave without having a tall strawberry milk Agua fresca for under $5. I'd have to pay atleast $8 for a small cup and mediocre taste here in the bay area.
google avatar

Lauren T.

Yelp
I've been in America for 25 years and this is the first time... it stinks but the food and trinkets are delicious and they sell Mexican crafts, sweets, there's something good, so going back.
google avatar

Diana L.

Yelp
-1 star for people not social distancing and lack of enforcement Other than that, this is your standard latin american flea market. You can find traditional clothing, ingredients for home remedies, shoes, and lots and lots of different foods!! Tonight I made my 30 minute trek just for some "nieve de garafa". The pecan flavor is my favorite. I was impressed to see how many vendors accepted apple pay & zelle!!
google avatar

Emilio P.

Yelp
Family happy place donde encontrarás antojitos mexicanos productos de varias partes de México al igual que Calzado Mexicano
google avatar

Gina B.

Yelp
I came across this spot on TikTok. It sort of reminds me of Mercado de Cielos in Phoenix, it's mostly Mexican imported items, spices, medicines, boots. I've been looking for a few things and haven't been able to find it in Az and found it here. It's worth the stop IMO.

Ramiro A.

Yelp
The best I would highly recommend it to people who want to try out Mexican snacks and for people who would like to buy some nice decorations.
google avatar

Antonio A.

Yelp
Girl, forget flowers. Get you a man that brings you bouquets of warm, crispy-on-the-outside, super-soft-on-the-inside freshly made CHURROS! The best ones I've ever tried are at MERCADITO in Boyle Heights! You'll find them inside the little house/shelter thing with food stands inside it. 6pcs for $4 or a dozen for $8. LOL, there is no discount for buying a dozen. Haha I think I might be the only Chino that goes to Mercadito on the regular - BTW, I'm not even Chinese, but my Mexican homies still call me chino, like "damn foo, you a down ass chino eh." LOL
google avatar

Yazmin G.

Yelp
My family and I have been going to El Mercadito for years! It's a great place for your favorite hispanic treats, crafts, and entertainment. Any day of week is fun. During the holidays, it's very festive. Every once in a while we will make trips to fulfill our cravings. They have the best esqites- Asados or cocidos And they have fresh agua frescas! The papaitas are home made. I highly recommended for anyone to try it. It's a great experience and something to see if you are new to LA. You will most definitely feel the culture and what the city of east los has to offer
google avatar

Ruby R.

Yelp
I love coming here, it's almost like taking a trip to Mexico. They have tons of traditional Mexican items throughout the entire Mercadito and the best part are the goodies to indulge in! I always make it a point to get freshly fried potato chips topped with lemon and hot sauce as well as an esquite. The place is 3 floors, 1st floor is home decor, kitchen items, shoes and other neat stuff. 2nd floor has small food locations with available sit down tables, juice shops, a market and a bakery. This place is truly a gem in LA and is a must visit, make sure to treat yourself!

Karina G.

Yelp
El gallito restaurant is the best restaurant to eat there I've been going there for years definitely try de babacoa en su jugo it's amazing and don't miss out on the hand made tortillas
google avatar

Destiny E.

Yelp
Love love love El Mercadito. Parking is free. Bring cash for the little stalls. The food upstairs is so delicious. Don't forget to grab a treat before you leave. The raspados are good. Beautiful place to eat and shop. Weekends do get crowded so I recommend visiting during the week if possible. They have authentic Mexican cheese and spices, Mexican attire, boots, jewelry, curanderos, and more. I really love the curandero who is by the stairs entering the second level. He's very sincere, friendly, and nice. I've come here for years and I'm so glad to see this place still standing and thriving. The food is delicious. The flautas are my favorite with pickled carrots and jalapeños.
