Pleasantly funny owner came outside to greet my uncle and me. Service was fast, food great. Pricey but worth it every once in a while.

Came here after I saw that it had tons of great reviews on google. We were here for the day from out-of-town and needed a yummy bite. The place was difficult to find given the construction. Now let me be clear that is NOT what earned them one star! The food did! The chicken dish I ordered was awful! The cream of mushroom sauce was terrible. The chicken tasted like it had been boiled rather than grilled for more flavor. The veggies were nuked to a wonderfully dehydrated nutritionless existence. BUT the staff is super sweet and very accommodating. The place IS quaint and charming. The prices are unreasonably high given what you get! I was very disappointed and wanted to like it but truth be told my dish was terrible to say the least.

Google
Customer service impecable, food delicious. On the flip side it got pricey, but for a special day of indulgence I guess is ok. If you are in Laredo and want to try something different, you might want to check this place out.

Google

Google
The salsa at El Meson is one of a kind and starts your meal of right. Today I had the guisada de res with a side of fideo. This fideo is really good. Carne was tender and tasty. Exceptional meal. One very small observation/ complaint. Why are you served with plastic utensils? The plates, bowls, etc are not disposable, so why use disposable forks and spoons? Not only environmentally irresponsible, but it cheapens the experience. This isn’t a fast food or taco truck. This meal is much better than to be eaten with plastic.

Google
Amazing food and good service just the parking lot needs some improvements and also the menu selection and real utensils would definitely be nice specially for the Caldo de res.

Google
The food here is the best and the price is always right. Cute lil restaurant but the parking lot needs to be fixed (too small).

Google
Hole in the wall eatery, family owned, quick service and good food. What's not to like? They have AWESOME green fire roasted salsa for your chips. Their specialty is the pechuga rellena (chicken cordon blue). Limited seating, and they are always packed, but it is worth the wait!

Steve R.

Yelp
Food was very good! Service was excellent very friendly staff! Good portions sizes! If your looking for that hole in the wall Mexican restaurant, look no further

Yelp
Delicious homemade Mexican food. You park across the street and a very friendly young man comes out to take your order. All of the food is really delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Lady that answer phone call is very rude... even the pechuga is good... I'll never order from her anymore.
google avatar

Yelp
The best restaurant in downtown Laredo. Also the food is tex-mex is great too almost like homemade.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food. Wish they had a full restaurant and not just take out. Friendly, efficient staff.

Yelp
Like always, you can't go wrong with choosing El Meson to enjoy great food and great service. We have been coming here for more than 20 years and enjoying the "pechuga rellena" a cordón blue plate with delicious spaghetti accompanied with 2 servings of corn and mashed potatoes.

Arturo L.

Yelp
Great Mexican cuisine flavor and seasoning! Food is always hot and cooked to perfection.

Yelp
When in Laredo, you must make a stop by El Meson de San Agustin. This restaurant has been serving for years now and their menu options remain delicious and authentic as always. I personally enjoy the chicken cordon bleu also known as the "Pechuga Rellena". This dish comes with a generous size chicken accompanied by kernel corn, tasty mashed potatoes and their also famous green pasta. The combination of these sides blend excellent with the chicken cordon bleh and still one of my favorite. The service here is great and fast. The atmosphere is very cute and Mexican. 5 stars to you guys! And well deserved. Thank you exceptional service and food.

Yelp
I have been ordering for years, and the food has always been very good, however, the woman who takes phone orders is CONSISTENTLY RUDE no matter how early or late in the day you call. The woman is sarcastic, demeaning, and unhelpful. It's sad that customers have to deal with her just to get their order noted. She's been this way for YEARS.

Anna L. R.

Yelp
The food at this place used to be so good. Now it's only for takeout. You can place an order online and pick up. You have to wait outside on the sidewalk. Can't come in. Food I ordered was ok but I don't think I would do this again.

Yelp
The quintessential hole-in-the-wall restaurant of Laredo, TX. El meson de San Agustin has some of the most memorable food I've had on both sides of the border. Definitely worth checking out!

Hilda A.

Yelp

Yelp
Laredo's best Mexican Restaurant. In business now for about 17 years, it offers top shelf homemade dishes that will have back for more. An actual 'hole in the wall' restaurant, there is no outside sign. Just go by the address or ask anyone. The building entrance is non descript, but once you open the door, you are overwhelmed by the color, the smiles and the friendliness. The place is small, but they manage to get everyone in without waiting too long. With that...after you finish your meal...don't hang out too long...but kindly make room for others as they have waited for a table. :) The food is excellent. This visit, had the Enchiladas. I chose two red, one green and one Mole. Sandy, one of the founders duaghters, was extolling how good the menudo was that day, so I ordered some of that too. Delcious. The salsa and chips served ahead are excellent as well. They have a good thing going here, so their consistency of traditional homemade style food has served them well. Any visit to Laredo must include a visit or two here!

Yelp
Yes love it very much what a great experience to be honest I would love to go again so yea

Andrea T.

Yelp
The food is great, but should open dinning so people can go inside and eat. some of us come from out of town and dont always want to eat inside the car.

Yelp
I passed this place up yesterday because I didn't trust the front door. The lack of a sign confuses things too. Made up my mind today that I was going no matter what. Follow your iphone Google map from yelp and you'll find it. It is literally a stone's throw to Mexico. It might as well be in Mexico. While everyone speaks Spanish, their English is perfect too so don't sweat it. The inside is small and truly a family atmosphere. It's bright, colorful and noisy - just what I hoped for. They change the menu daily but there are some standards. My server recommended #13, Pechuga Rellena (Empanizada, Gratinada o banada en crema) I included a photo too. It's this amazing rolled blend of chicken, ham, cheese....it's lightly fried and served with spaghetti, mashed potatoes, corn and two slices of white bread to sop up the banana sauce, which is a little spicy but perfect. Be sure to have the Limonada y Jamica! They give chips and homemade green salsa to start and the salsa is great: nice and spicy and chunky. Overall, this is a great family place that should not be missed if you're here!

Yelp
Authentic and delicious! It's worth the menacing one ways that is downtown old Laredo. Salsa, tostadas, carne de puerco en salsa verde were all homemade. We only wished that they were open for dinner. Thank you! We will definitely return when we come back to Laredo.

Yelp
I've had two bad experiences in this restaurant. The food is not freshly made, its recooked or been there sitting for hours. The worse time to go is during lunch hours because the service is awful. I've waited on my food for at least 45min to an hour. The management doesn't seem to care especially the cashier. On one of the occasion I told her I was canceling my order because it was taking forever she didn't seem to care and told me she still had to charge me the lemonade not a single "oh I'm sorry for the inconvenience" what so ever!! She has terrible customer service skills!

Yelp
7 of us rode motorcycles 575 miles each way for an 1,150 round trip just to say we rode to the border and back in a day. This is where we stopped for lunch. The food was amazing! Everybody had something different and it was all awesome!!! It turns out that the restaurant owner also owns a motorcycle and makes long distance rides. He welcomed us in, let us park our bikes in his private courtyard, and again....the lunch was amazing!!!

Yelp
I ate there in January. It is a hidden gem in the wonderful historic setting of San Agustin Plaza of Laredo. The food was fresh and authentic. Don't miss it--pop in there while wandering around and taking in the historic area.

Yelp
Spectacular food in an authentic location. Use your Google maps to find it as there is no sign. We are from New Mexico and accustomed to excellent salsas, enchiladas, etc , but el Meson was the best food we have eaten. For lunch go early.as they might run out of what you think you want. That happened to us at 1 pm, so we took what was still available and loved it. Delicious. Best salsa ever.

Yelp
I'm originally from San Antonio, and occasionally we stop by Laredo to visit family. This is by far the best place to get some good authentic and cheap food. I had the enchiladas suizas! The portion of food was average, the enchilada green sauce was spicy, and the enchiladas had just enough chicken in them. I don't normally venture out from the basic cheese enchilada, but I do however highly recommend this dish. The rice and beans were average but honestly, you can be satisfied with just the enchiladas themselves. If you order ice tea, it come in a bottle. I think the company is Pikes ice tea or something. My father had the caldo de res. It came in a huge bowl with beef, carrots, potatoes, and I think cabbage. It was mild in flavor but cooked to perfection as far as the meat and veggies go. It's another dish I could recommend if you are not up for enchiladas suizas.

Yelp
Amazingly good authentic Mexican food in a beautiful, bright and cozy hole-in-the-wall. Ignore the one star review. That person doesn't know what he's talking about (he gave Rudy's BBQ and Country store 5 stars.). I had the beef short ribs off the lunch portion of the menu. There was more than enough food for $7. Also the sopita de papa (potato soup) was so good I literally could not stop eating it. I'm definitely coming back next time I'm in Laredo. You can tell the local citizens eat here: not a chain tourist trap for sure!
google avatar

Jordan B.

Yelp
Food was yummy although the plates could have more food than just a small spoonful of rice and rationed amount of meat. Still good though
google avatar

Fernando G.

Yelp
Best Chicken Cordon Bleu in town, hands down! Always my go-to! Service is really quick, but the parking and eating area could be better.
google avatar

Michelle R.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem in Laredo. The food is amazing and the service is quick! Let me just say I was able to park, walk 2 blocks, be seated, order, and receive my meal all under 15 min. The entire experience last 20 min. I went on a Saturday at 1230ish.

Lyd E.

Yelp
The food is overpriced. You can get the same food meal for way half the price on Facebook market. Service is bad. The place is cute but needs better service to the people dining or taking out .
google avatar

C K.

Yelp
Good food. Wish they didn't use instant mashed potatoes and canned corn on their "signature dish" the pechuga rellena. Other dishes are ok as well nothing spectacular. Wow, went back since I was in the area, they've gone crazy with their prices! Almost 15.00 a plate w/one drink! I mean the pechuga rellena is good but you can't justify the price increase with that one item! The pasta is good too but instant mashed potatoes and canned corn??? And they reduced the serving of ready sliced "sandwich" bread from two to one! I'd overlook if it was house made or artisanal but it's freaking wonder bread. Unbelievable....

Yelp
One of the best surprises in Laredo. El Meson is a charming family run Mexican restaurant that has that home cooked meal feeling. The stuffed chicken with ham and cheese is ok. Not the best thing I tasted but it is good. The reason I give this place 4 stars if for the spicy fajitas de res plate and their excellent lemonade. The fajitas de res is not your typical grilled fajita plate. It comes with slices of sausage in a very spicy flavorful sauce that takes it to a whole other level. The rice and beans are very good and made fresh. And to wash everything down was a very good homemade lemonade. A bit on the sweet side but that's my preference. Oh and it's not made from a powder. I would highly recommend this place for lunch if your in the downtown Laredo area. But come early as seating is limited but food comes out quickly.
google avatar

Marissa J.

Yelp
A MUST IF YOU ARE DOWNTOWN i have been coming here since i was a little girl and not much has changed. it is literally a hole in the wall! everything is yummy but my fave is the milanesa!!
google avatar

Yelp
Love love love this place! The seating is a bit tight and they aren't open very long, but if your in Laredo and have never been here and do not know where to go( and end up noticing that no one really yelps out here) then you should def just choose this place! I am out here on business and the first thing I noticed was the abundance of Mexican restaurants here ( which is something to be expected). We have eaten at a few of them before we wound up in El Meson. Ill tell you the Fideo (starter) was the best I have ever had anywhere! Chips and salsa were made fresh and super flavorful, my enchiladas were delicious, and my refried beans were excellent ( if you grew u eating them you would know the difference in refried beans too. Example if you have already tried Danny's feel free to compare)! We were so happy with our meals that we decided to come back for a second lunch and ordered their Pechuga Rellena aka " chicken cordon bleu" and it was killer! Added some flavor by getting chipotle sauce on the side to dip it in. Next time your in Laredo and want some Mexican authenticity, don't be fooled El Meson is what's up. It's also nestled downtown right where the St Augustine historical area is so walk around and check out some history!

Yelp
This has got to be my favorite place in Laredo. I try to make it there every time I am in town. If you are going for lunch on a weekday as I usually do, be sure to get there early or prepare for a wait. If you do have to wait, it will be worth it, though. I don't know if this restaurant is owned by a family, but it has that kind of appeal. Everyone who works there is extremely friendly and makes you feel welcome. When you are seated, you are immediately offered chips and salsa. This chips are thick and warm, and go so well with the salsa. I could make a meal just eating those. I would highly recommend ordering the limonada or jamaica, as both are fresh and fantastic. Although I really need to try some other items on the menu, I always end up getting a version of the pechuga rellena, which is a stuffed chicken breast. My favorite is the one stuffed with ham, which is basically a chicken cordon bleu. It is served with a side of spaghetti and whatever the vegetable of the day is. You will have a choice of sauces to accompany the chicken. My favorites are the spinach and broccoli sauces, but I'm not sure that you could go wrong with any of them. El Meson is really a hidden Laredo treasure (I'm pretty sure there is not a sign on the building at all). Yes, it's off the beaten path if you are not in the downtown area, but it is worth the effort to make the trip there.

Yelp
I second all the good reviews from my fellow yelpers! Authentic, fresh, yummy goodness! The salsa is so good! Wanted to try something new and different from my text mex favorites. Had the Carne de Puerto con Calabacitas. Very good, and did I mention the awesome salsa? Lol! Staff are very helpful and friendly. Get there before the lunch crowd.
google avatar

Loren P.

Yelp
Delicious! But, now I'm in a food coma. ugh. ...I'd do it again though Must have the chicken stuffed with ham and cheese topped with creamed brocolli. YUM.
google avatar

Kristina B.

Yelp
WOW!! A must must try authentic Mexican resturant. I ordered the chile rellenos mixto & subed for Mexican spagehti. Delish. They are little pricy for subing and portion sides are too small. These plates tend to be loaded with a pool of oil. You gotta try at least once
google avatar

Katy L.

Yelp
This is a great place to get some good food. I love the pechuga with the poblano sauce over it but there is a ton of other options that are great. They always have different items on the daily menu but also have their staples. There is however some complaints over how they use canned corn and unfresh mash potatoes for the pechuga I mean come on? 8-11$ and you used canned corn and just a small dab of mash potato? I tend to order togo so I don't have an option on the dining and service, but the lady that is always at the togo desk is always nice, I believe her name is Lilly? There is another lady that is there sometimes, but she can be rude and pushy sometimes. The price for the food sometimes also seems a little bit pricey. Other than that, the food is pretty good and it's always fun to try the different things they offer.
google avatar

Yvette R.

Yelp
So far so good, great little whole in the wall with good atmosphere. Recommended the grilled chicken breast
google avatar

Hien N.

Yelp
I had the Caldo de Res. The portions are huge! More than enough meat in the soup bowl. Everything tasted excellent. The servers were really nice and friendly. The salsa that they give you as a free appetizer was one of the best I've had. If you don't mind being a block away from the border of Mexico, this is a must try when in Laredo. A real hole in the wall type of restaurant.
google avatar

Andrea V.

Yelp
Amazing food, excellent service. Wonderful family oriented atmosphere. I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good food.
google avatar

Brittany D.

Yelp
This place was down right delicious!!! If you are in Laredo, you must go out of your way to eat here. The owners are so nice and friendly. Be sure to arrive hungry because you will need to eat the homemade salsa, meal, homemade drink, AND desert!!! I cannot say enough good things about this place. I wish I was in Laredo long enough to go back.. I guess I'll have to start planning my next trip back. I ordered the stuffed poblano peppers covered with chipolte sauce and my friend ordered the stuffed chicken with ham and cheese smothered with the poblano sauce. Both were incredible. The salsa is one of the best I have ever had!
google avatar

Nic L.

Yelp
If you want an authentic Mexican feed, no need to go south of the border, they come to you. The food is spectacular and the staff are lovely.
google avatar

Laura F.

Yelp
Price and taste of the food is good. My favorite is the "pechuga rellena". I LOVE the potato and broccoli soup. I don't like broccoli but I love their soup. I've had horrible experiences however. One time I picked up food on my 30 min break. They gave me the wrong plate and I called to see if they can give me credit or anything. The person did not want to help me out at all. She said to go in but it is far from my work and I only had 30 min. It seems they did not want to keep the customer happy. In addition, the owner rushes you to eat and is kind of an a***ole. But I only go pick up the food.
google avatar

mondo g.

Yelp
One of laredos best kept secrets. Don't let the entrance fool you. This is as good as authentic, home cooked Mexican food by mom can get.
google avatar

Liliana C.

Yelp
Enchiladas suizas--my favorite in Laredo. They make them twice a week--follow El Meson on FB to see their menu every day and treat yourself to them, because they are incredible. (Also try the pechuga rellena--that is, if you can break yourself away from ordering another enchilada plate).

Armstrong T.

Yelp
It was my first time eating here. Perhaps the very best menudo I have ever had. Not at all greasy or heavy like the ones I eat here in Houston. I highly recommend the Lengua de Res en Salsa. Beef tongue that is so soft it literally melts in your mouth. The atmosphere was very welcoming and the staff was friendly and helpful. I definitely will be coming back some day.
google avatar

Jess J.

Yelp
NASTY! Canned food and most is not home made. Dirtiest restrooms and very small and tables are too close to each other. No parking. Wait time is bad, but not because it's a good restaurant and everyone is in there, but because it's freaking small.
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
Ahhhhmazing pozole and caldo de res. It's so crazy they don't even have a sign up, and if you aren't looking for it you'd miss it. We got there at noon and there was a line out the door the whole time we were having lunch. Will never pass through Laredo without stopping in!
