The papusas, chile rellenos, rice, and salsa are all delightful. We came last week and enjoyed it so much that we went back today. You can tell the place is popular because we arrived right before the dinner rush and then the place filled up before we left.

Google
The best thing from this place are the pupusas. The rest of the menu is decant. They're pretty busy. So the service is very slow. If you want your drink refilled. You have to hunt down the server. It's a pretty popular place. So it gets a little noisy. Here's a picture of the burrito. I forgot to get one of the papusas.

Cody Howell

Google
The food was pretty good. We brought a party of ~12 at 5 on Memorial Day Weekend, and it wasn't very busy. We walked in and they assembled a large table for us very quickly. The atmosphere is pretty nice, but the music they have playing is a little bit too loud. All the walls are reflective and it would probably get pretty noisy at full capacity. The service was okay. We had to catch someone to get water refills, and our food came maybe 30 minutes in. They weren't very responsive here (though they were nice for our 4 kids, and generally pleasant).

Jacob Gwilliam

Google
They updated their menu! Pupusas were great! Our waiter was very nice but it took a long time for us to get water refilled. Best place to go for pupusas and they give you yummy chips and salsa to start!

Kelvin Corea

Google
The Pupusas were amazing! Really great food and great service. Highly recommend.

Nathan Dunford

Google
They have the best pupusas I've ever had. Get the revelueltas! Their chips and salsa are also excellent, a bit runny but the flavor is excellent. Great service. We come whenever we visit!

R and S

Google
My family wanted to have an experience eating pupusas. The server was very kind, but the pupusas were not anything special. We ordered the “revueltas” ones and they were fine, but that’s it. We also ordered other dishes including burritos, a torta, and enchiladas; and those were also just okay. It’s very typical high grease low quality food, but hits the spot if you’re craving it and nothing else is open. We probably won’t return any time soon.

Vanessa Gonzalez

Google
Love, l9ve their food. If I could give a 10 star I would. BUT the lady at the register is so rude. Its the second time she helps me. Never is nice, But in the other hand the servers are amazing. The cooks are amazing. Since they change ownership the lady at the register needs to learn a bit of good customer service.

Yelp
Really really good food! I was down in Provo for a field trip and we ended just before lunch so I searched for pupusas nearby. I'd always heard there was a really good place in Provo but didn't know the name. Two options came up but one had weird hours and was closed so MexSal won. I'm so glad we got to try it! The best fried yuca I've ever had and the pupusas were stuffed and delicious. Everything was fair price and service was immaculate. We are not down this way often but next time for sure getting this again.

Yelp
I've been coming here since I was little, and no other place that serves pupusas compares (though I may be a little biased!). I love supporting a local family business, and they never disappoint. I usually stick with the cheese pupusa, but my family has tried other items on the menu and they always love what they get. Service is always great!
google avatar

Yelp
While the food was good (ceviche cocktail de Camarón) the service was slow and not very attentive. We had the track down the server to order and then track him down again for the bill and a container. I ordered a mojito but they lost their liquor license so I got a virgin and then they said they didn't have mint. I ordered the ceviche with pulpo and Cameron but they only gave me camaron :(

Alex M.

Yelp
Sopa de pata is bomb, also I love that they give you plenty of curtido and salsa . Service was a bit slow but I get it. I liked the place and service.
google avatar

MarMar G.

Yelp
The cheese pupusa was good and fresh and the condiments were delicious and flavorful. The rice and beans with the fish were really good. The fish was not good at all. It was very dry and soaked a lot of the oil.
google avatar

Yelp
This is my and my colleagues' go-to lunch place. I've brought my husband and friends here for dinner too. It's just about perfect. It's low key, not expensive, and big enough for a small crowd at one table. I generally order the pupusas and the plantains, which are so good as to make my mouth water. The chips and salsa are better than your regular free restaurant offerings. Crunchy, salty, fresh chips. Bright, flavorful salsa. The lunch deal is good and satisfies even my cheapest colleague. It's not fancy, but it's perfect for every day.

Derek B.

Yelp
This place is the bomb. I got the revueltas pupusas and they hit the spot! Sooo good!

Yelp
I see several 4+ star reviews for this place but for us, it just fell short. If you have read any of my other reviews of Mexican Restaurants, you'll know my wife (who is Hispanic) has never found rice to her liking at ANY Mexican Restaurant. In her defense, she does make KILLER Mexican Rice. I have toyed with the idea of opening a restaurant and just serving that and her mom's beans. I stuck with my usual, a chicken taco combo plate. I found the tortillas to be chewy and the rice was bland. The refried beans were....Okay. Just nothing special here at all. My wife went with nachos, which I think, is a hard dish to review. They are typically packed with just about everything so you are likely to find something worth eating in the pile. Overall, 3 stars was the best it could get from either of us. We were traveling and always like to try the local haunts but this is certainly a one-and-done in our book.

Yelp
I had a bad experience with the service at this location. They had a cashier or server that was very rude and unprofessional. When she was ringing up our total, she had a really bad attitude. Once we paid, she tells our waitress that's walking by "aquí no te dejaron nada de tip a ver si en la mesa" while we're still standing there at the register. Translation "they didn't leave you a tip here, let's see if at the table" And her saying that directly in our faces is the reason why the service is not valuable.
google avatar

Emily J.

Yelp
Pupusas and platanos fritos are amazing. Horchata was excellent. Fun atmosphere and they have a liquor license.
google avatar

Tatiana W.

Yelp
Great place for great Latin food at a good price. A local staple that's been around for a while, the quality of food has always been great. Service is fast, restaurant is clean, and pupilas are made to order.

Marta E.

Yelp
These are the best pupusas I've ever had. So cheap and you can sit down or call and order for take out. I always get the revueltas but you can't go wrong with any of them.
google avatar

Connie G.

Yelp
We can across this place and decided to try it. It did not disappoint! The pupusas cheese pull was amazing! The services was quick and it seemed like a lot of locals knew the staff. I'd definitely make a quick stop here if I'm in the area.
google avatar

Shannon W.

Yelp
I was brought here by my daughter and son-in-law, who come here often. They quite enjoy it here. So for my first time I didn't know what to order. I ended with a cheese enchilada and a few other things on the side. Their salsa was really runny but tasted delicious. We all enjoyed our food. The service was great. The staff were all very friendly, and they cleaned the table off for us quickly when we got there. Our waitress was very friendly, helpful, and quick.
google avatar

Tania B.

Yelp
Best pupusas I've had in Utah, they come out hot and delicious. The curtido and salsa are made in house, which is always a plus. I also had the cóctel de camarón and it was really good. They give you a generous helping of shrimp and avocado in your cóctel, which a lot of places don't do. The wait staff was nice and attentive, checking on us regularly. Will for sure be back.
google avatar

Marty M.

Yelp
I been looking for that Nice pupusa taste , could only find in Cali. Then I Moved here an El Mexsal, it's the booommbb! The pupusas are just amazing!!! The queso, mixtas, bean only!! The only , and I mean , the only spot that takes care of my cravings!!
google avatar

Stormy P.

Yelp
Food is hit or miss and so is the service. Sometimes they close early for no reason and the restaurant and restrooms are often dirty. There are much better places so its a hard pass for us.
google avatar

Pete J.

Yelp
One word Pupusas. Wow if you have never had one you need to try them. If you have had them to ones here are the best I have ever had. Everything is served with a generous serving of chips and fresh salsa. The pupusas are served with curtido (a spicy fermented cabbage slaw) and tomato salsa. I had 2 my son tried and failed to eat 3. If I had to suggest a second word it would be Authentic. I have not visited El Salvador yet however I expect the cuisine and friendly service represented here as completely authentic. Another must visit when in the Provo UT area.
google avatar

Roger S.

Yelp
Visiting the state for work and local buddy met me here...This place is a Gem!! Great food and service! They had so much to choose from but went with Pupusas! It did not disappoint! Definitely a must if you are in the area or state!!

Yelp
A little tiny spot in a strip mall shopping area, easily missed from the road . The food is magnificent . They have a combo El Salvador and Mexican food . Spanish video Music playing on the TV. Wait staff young and moving swiftly. The food is piping hot and amazing . My beef and bean burrito was awesome. My son got Salvadoran bistecca .. and a tamale. Highly recommend this if looking for great food , great prices and no pretenses - come as you are and enjoy the diversity all around ..

Yelp
SOOO YUMMY! I've heard about El Mexal and finally made it, and I wish I had gone years ago when I first heard about it! I tried their Pupusas, and they were incredible!! Large and filling, and delicious!! The salad, mixed with whatever it's seasoned with, along with salsa, combines perfectly to make it a delightful dish! I absolutely recommend it to anyone! Worth going out of your way to try it!!
google avatar

Myranda Lee S.

Yelp
This place has been a staple for me since my college days. I hadn't been in forever but was in the area so I decided to stop by! I was shocked with what they've done with the place, idk when it happened but the expansion looks amazing! I'm pretty sure the only thing I've ever gotten here are the pupusas and they were just as amazing as I remembered them! I love that they give you a heaping bowl of shredded cabbage and salsa, YUM! The service was great as well, no complaints here at all!
google avatar

Yelp
El mexsal is a great place for a family outing. First of all, they serve chips and salsa at the beginning - this seems to be a dying practice at other restaurants post-covid. The prices are decent and the proportions are good! There are easily recognizable dishes for those not familiar with Mexican or el Salvadorian food but there are also options to branch out! You MUST try one of the papusas - it's somewhat of a specialty here.

Kyle P.

Yelp
I could eat Mexican for all meals everyday and be happy about it. I have salsa 2-3 meals a day. I make my own salsas. The salsa is below average. Not very flavorful, watery and little to no kick. I ordered a steak street taco and a papusa. The taco was average. For the price I would expect cheese in it. The papusa was ok. I am not a papusa fan. People were nice. Ok place.
google avatar

Mckall R.

Yelp
El Mexsal has the best beef taco hands down. Love this place and it's service. Came in for lunch and my food came swiftly and was delicious. Never disappointed here and it always has good vibes and service. Love this place.
google avatar

Alisha B.

Yelp
This authentic Salvadorian eatery is sure to please. We have left satisfied every visit. This time we ordered a beef chimichanga, a chicken chimichanga, and a variety of pupusas. The pupusas were large, soft and only $3 each. We think the coleslaw type topping is pretty bland but the hot sauce and salsa are great. Both the beef and the chicken in the chimichangas were tender, moist and delicious. Portions were generous, too. The service was very good and the place is reasonably clean. I was worried about the cracked water pitcher they brought to refill our cups.
google avatar

Mitchell R.

Yelp
This place is a 11 out of 10! We've come here probably 5 times so far and the food never disappoints. The horchata is to die for, the food is so cheesy and delicious, and the staff is kind. Try the tacos. I don't even like hard shell tacos but these ones taste incredible. Best Chile r lleno I've ever had too.

Ixtlaly M.

Yelp
I went to eat here right after I got married, the food was okay I didn't like the horchata, the popusas are very good and they were nice and friendly
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
Okay, the best menu items are their puposas! Everything else is okay, but lead out with their tasty puposas. The services is ...okay, not great. They forgot part of our order :( The decore is a combination of old and new. Divey and more up-to-date mixed in an incoherent fusion. I would say these are the best puposas in Provo.

Gustavo G.

Yelp
They are the best Pupusas in Utah!! The only bad this is that the service is not agreeable. They are kind of rude. I hope they can be humbled and that way more customers can come. I still order to pick up.
google avatar

Scotty W.

Yelp
Place is normally great. Saturday not so much. They don't have it together. Service is slow and the people just give you a dirty look. I had ask for chips I had to ask for beer. Hell when I asked for more chips the lady gave me the worst look ever. Not a great experience here
google avatar

Kory D.

Yelp
I fell in love with pupusas when I lived in New York, so I was excited to have them again and also introduce them to my wife. What I love about El Mexsal is it appeases those that want pupusas, but isn't limited to just those like you may get at a pupusaria. If anyone in your party isn't in the mood, you've got a full menu of Mexican. And who doesn't love Mexican? When it comes to the Mexican food, El Mexsal is your standard Mexican food with classic Mexican dishes. The pupusas and the Mexican food seem in the same level: they're good. Not great, but definitely not bad. I'd be happy to go again but I am also likely to try some other local pupusarias to compare.
google avatar

Daryl N.

Yelp
I've wined and dined here about 6 times (yes they serve beer) but I usually call ahead and order pupusas for take-out. This place is usually busy even in the middle of the day. However it is spacious and has plenty of servers. Huge menu with many popular Mexican/centro American dishes. Pupusas are just $2.50 and can be filled with almost anything. These pupusas taste fresher and are thicker than El Salvador.
google avatar

Luis C.

Yelp
Super good pupusas!!! The chicarrones con yucca were really good.. also try the horchata. Can't wait to be in Provo to go again.

Ron B.

Yelp
Good Mexican food and very friendly service. Enjoy eating here often. Clean restaurant and lots of options to choose from.
google avatar

Daniella R.

Yelp
The taquitos and pupusas are DELICIOUS. The chips and salsa are super yummy too. I would come here for just the pupusas too.
google avatar

Tahs L.

Yelp
Guys you gotta try this place it was sooo good and the horchata lived up to its reviews. I got the bean and cheese burrito plate and the cheese and beans were so good. Definitely come here. Service is slower but worth the wait for sure.
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
its ok. the papusas were large and flavorful. if I was coming just for that, its another star. for those of you who have not had one, its a 3-5" around corn fritter-type pancake with fillings from central America. I ordered the meat and cheese version. it was very tasty, my wife's one was a little undercooked. the pickled cabbage accompaniment was tasty and plentiful. well done! Now the drag. the enchiladas were decent sized, and filled, but little to no sauce. I prefer to hunt the enchilada in the pile of sauce and use the rest for the beans and rice when i go out for Mexican food. Not here I won't. The beans were decently homemade, and the rice was also. nothing to write home about, but it did lift the overall rating. the salsa was good flavor but weak and a little watery. if i get the craving for a papusa, i will go back.
google avatar

Rod S.

Yelp
What a pleasant surprise! They are not only open Sunday afternoon, it's a lively place. It's like being in the real world. The beer is 3.2, but there is beer. There is no doubt that there is a lot of support from the local Latino culture, and it shows. It is Mexican and Salvadorian food. I don't know jack about Salvadorian food. I do know the cheese pupussa was really good. As good as the various pupussas were, there's several Mexican dishes I really want to try. The chips are good, but the salsa is fantastic. The flavors are complex, and there's enough spice to know this place isn't dumbed down for the local masses. I read some raving about the rice and beans. The rice is that slightly red instant rice. The refried beans pretty standard. That said, the flavor is better than the local casual chains. The prices on the food are incredibly inexpensive. It tastes really good, and the servers we saw were all very nice. When a restaurant exceeds all expectations for what they advertise, it's a five star review. There's nothing sketchy about this part of town, unless you believe a little Spanish advertising for the businesses is sketchy. This place just became out go to Mexican restaurant for anything but a quick lunch.
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
Nothing wrong with our food - I wouldn't be sad to go again but there are so many similar places around Provo that I would try something else next time. We got the horchata, smothered bean burrito, and asada tacos. None of them blew my mind. It was a fun atmosphere and big space so it would be good for a big group.
google avatar

Yosmar C.

Yelp
The best pupusas . Better than in El Salvador.. highly recommended!!! The place does not look that nice from outside , but omg the pupusas are the best ! I ordered one with cheese , loroco and cheese and beans

Krista P.

Yelp
The pupusas are amazing! The pupusas revueltas (ground pork and beans) are our favorite. We always ask for extra cuertido- the cabbage slaw for topping. Yummy!!!

Mario D.

Yelp
Great food at a reasonable price. Homemade style. Good service. The chicken enchiladas are awesome.

Meme H.

Yelp
The food was delicious. Lots of meat and plenty of cheese. Lunch menu includes a drink. We eat here often. The service was prompt and our waiter very helpful.

Yelp
Went to Provo for a tour at Taste Chocolate. Had searched for a Salvadorian restaurant near the event. Found two but El Mexsal closed later which gave us time to take in another site outside of Provo before dinner. Called to make reservations a half hour before arrival and they were able to accommodate a party of fifteen on short notice. The place was busy but we were seated as soon as we arrived. The service was great with the waiter getting our multiple check orders correct and the staff being very attentive in bringing out our food quickly and keeping the chips and salsa coming along with the refills. There were other large groups there but I had no problem talking and hearing the family members near me. The food was great. I ordered three pupusas thinking they might be small due to the price for each but I ended up taking one back to the hotel. They were delicious and filled to the edges with pork and cheese. A very nice touch was that they included a cup of salsa and curtido in the doggy bag without being asked to. Everyone in my group was very happy with the choice of restaurant.
google avatar

Sheri R.

Yelp
When you can get really full with a meal for $4, it's really hard to go wrong! Like many others, a good part of the reason to come here is for a pupusa. At just over $2 each, it's a steal. I can usually eat about 2. Or 1 and something else. Definitely put the cabbage and red sauce on top. It adds the right amount of crunch and acid. I've only tried one of two other things on the menu and I would say the Mexican food side of things is better than average but not blow you away. But the price is very affordable. Service can be a little lacking. It's kind of like they forget you're there. But food wise it's a 4-star. And since I keep wanting to go back, I'm not going to let that bring it (or me!) dow

Oscar C.

Yelp
mal servicio de parte de la cajera no respeta la orden de llegada. te aleja del mostrador para cobrarle a otras personas en una racista esa persona es una de pelo rubio

Tyler B.

Yelp
Best of both worlds: my wife got tacos and I got papusas. Great portion sizes and great services. Probably my new favorite place in town.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome tasting food! Daughter took us here when we visited he at BYU. Amazing! The food tasted great. People were friendly. Waiters explained the food choices and about papsusa . Had several different kinds and everything was tasty. Go! Give it a try. You'll love it!
