12 Best Caribbean Restaurants Around The San Francisco-Bay Area - Eater SF

"The name says “new” but this restaurant has been around since 1974, making it the O.G. of Bay Area Caribbean spots. The original owners were from Cuba and Puerto Rico and offered classic versions of dishes like bistec a la Palomilla, a sirloin marinated in sour orange, and mofongo, mashed garlicky green plantains in a tomato-veggie sauce. Three years ago, husband-and-wife team Rafael and Tyrisha Frias took it over with the promise that they’d serve the same menu. They’re doing something right since Guy Fieri featured their ropa vieja on Diners Drive-ins and Dives." - Maria C. Hunt

Jessica greeted us and served our table with a big smile and great recommendations; great customer service! The Mofongo con Lechón was delicious, the meat was so tender and I haven't tasted a Mofongo that good since my trip to Puerto Rico in June. My kiddo had the arroz con pollo and she couldn't stop mentioning how amazing it was, she's normally a picky eater, not this time, too good to pass up. Great Service + Delicious food = Definitely going back!

Google
The down-to-earth place where you can enjoy the cuban food in a relaxing environment. The owner is very kind and the food is quick and delicious. The price is also quite affordable. The slow cooked pork is very tender. Ceviche with freshly made chips are refreshing. To me, the yuca fries is always surprisingly good and this place confirmed me once again that it is way better than potato fries. We love the tres le ches cake as well. FYI Guy Ferri came here too!

Google
I really was hopeful for this place as I love Caribbean food. Unfortunately, it didn't exactly live up to my expectations. The food isn't bad, it just not special. Service was also okay, nothing special. Location had approximately 10 tables. The atmosphere is nice. Lots of Puerto Rican/Cuban decorations and memorabilia. I would recommend for those who have never tried this type of food, but I won't be going back.

Google
I moved to the Bay Area from south Florida about 9 years ago and have been in search of some decent Cuban food since I got here and this place definitely provides that! Empanadas especially were delicious but everything my friend and I ordered was delicious. If table side service is what you’re in search of this isn’t the place; everyone is friendly but it’s a fast casual lunch/dinner spot and the servers have a lot going on besides attending to tables. Will definitely be back, so happy this place is here ❤️

Google
Infuriating! As a born and raised Cuban living in Bay Area I feel offended. How dare you try to pass this junk as our food? My review: -vaca frita- it’s supposed to be on the crunchier side and flavorful, this dish is chewy, flavorless and impossible to swallow, imagine swallowing a ball of plastic. -arroz con pollo: main word is chicken, it should have it… this dish has a minimal amount of tasteless chicken, rice is mushy. -tostones:it should be double fried crunchy green plantains, this dish used sweeter plantains that were not properly fried resulting in sogginess and sweeter flavor rather than salty, pathetic. -guava pastries: OMG! Lacks any tangible amount of guava and they were at least 2 days old !! STALE ! Seriously?! - Mojo sauce: it was water with lemon and oil flavor, disgusting. -mango and passion fruit juice: neither mango or passion fruit, some sort of sugary liquid that made me diabetic just by looking at it. -yuca fries: the ONLY properly cooked item. Is the food edible? Yes if you lack standards. Is this cuban food? Resounding NO Should you eat this? Absolutely NOT I need a Miami trip ASAP :(

Google
I cant remember how many times i've been here, but the consistency with the food keeps me coming back for more. I want to try something new but the Pork Mofongo is just too good to pass up. The pork was very tender and the plantains were cooked perfectly. I think next time i'll get Mofongo to go so i can finally try something else. Dont forget the Ironbeer Soda! I usually dont drink soda, but I couldn't pass up the chance to try a Cuban one. Goes great with Mofongo!

Google
The ropa vieja was so good! A perfect meal for a rainy night. The empanadas were also crazy good. The mofongo was a bit dry but still good. We also really liked the tostones. They were all out of sangria on a Saturday night which was a little odd but we would have loved to try the guava one.

Google
I made a reservation for 2 for Wednesday night during SF restaurant week, but when we were placing our orders, the server informed us that the sfrw menu is not available anymore. We were disappointed, but ordered from their regular menu anyway. We ordered the tostones, lechon, ropa vieja, and the guava rose sangria. All but the ropa vieja were on the sfrw menu. Flavors were good, but our food didn't arrive hot enough. They could do better.

Yelp
Hmmmm...nice little place that had a good server and casual ambiance. Our server gave us the front window table which was nice. We wanted to start with sangria but were informed that because they were busy earlier that they were out? It is only alcohol offered there! Ok well we ordered and I had never had Puerto Rico national dish of mufango so I ordered it. It was just ok. It felt like they prepared it all at the opening and then just heated it up when customers order it? We got our appetizer fast and it also felt heated up not fresh and then entrees came five minutes later also heated a bit. Sorry I probably won't go again as I appreciate the service but the food just wasn't that interesting or fresh!

Yelp
The food is okay and the portions are decent. What I did not like is that they will charge you for every little thing. Besides the plate that you order, even if it says that rice and other things come with the plate... they will still charge you separately for those items. So whatever you order from their menu (which you have to do via an app on your phone when you sit down... expect to pay 20%-50% more. And they did not tell me this beforehand until the bill came and I saw the additional charges. AND another charge was the 4% credit card fee which they should tell you about beforehand as well, and not try to sneak in more charges as they also did with the additional items that should come with the dish. The place was completely empty for a Saturday night, perhaps because of how they charge people extra money. I do not recommend.

Yelp
I love Caribbean food, especially Puerto Rican and Dominican food. It has been hard to find any spots in SF so I was so excited when I walked by this place one day and had to come try it! I ordered the mofongo and the lechon con arroz. Both were arguably the best I have had in the bay. The mofongo was delicious and juicy with the pork in the middle and the sauce was tasty. The lechon was also delicious and seasoned so well. Additionally we received very friendly service from the staff at the restaurant. Cannot recommend this place enough for anyone wanting to try Puerto Rican/Dominican food!

Yelp
If you're walking along 24th St and looking for a delicious meal, I recommend checking this place out! I stopped by for lunch on the weekend and was surprised that this place was so empty because I've had multiple friends rave about this spot before. I started with a guava lemonade, which was super tasty and refreshing. For food, I tried the mofongo and the ropa vieja. The mofongo (with pork shoulder) was definitely the highlight of the meal - highly recommend ordering it! The mashed green plantains were absolutely delicious paired with the veggie sauce, and the texture of the plantain bowl was perfect. The ropa vieja was great too, and I especially enjoyed how tender and flavorful the beef was. Service was excellent as well, and I liked the friendly neighborhood vibe of the place.

Yelp
Great food! Alright service. They were participating in restaurant week so I thought I'd give it a go. The vegetable empanadas with pink sauce was quite yummy. Really enjoyed the chicken special dish they had. Chocolate cake came from some pink box lol. Lord knows where they got that from...

Yelp
I am originally from the New York City area and am Puerto Rican in background. When I moved here to San Francisco, one of the first things I did was look for any Puerto Rican restaurants. Caribbean restaurants are tough to find here so I was initially skeptical when I found this spot in the heart of the Mission. Oh my God, El Nuevo Fruitlandia blew us away. I took my family and everything we ordered was authentic and delicious. You can tell that the owners love what they do because you feel it in the food. Definitely check it out!

Yelp
Saturday, May 25. Came all the way from Sacramento for my son's birthday and they closed early today. It said online they closed at 9. Came at 7:47pm and they had closed. Very very disappointing.

Yelp
Had this in my collections list as a "want to try" after seeing it on Diners, Dives and Drive Ins. We ordered the empanadas which were the best I've ever had. Everyone always seems to get excited about empanadas but I could never see the reason. This spot gives you a reason to be excited about them. I enjoyed the beef one the best but I am a carnivore at heart so maybe that's why. The chicken tasted like the same as the pollo dish ordered and the veggie just tasted like veggie. Loved the beef (5/5) as the outside of the empanada was crisp but the inside still fluffy. Yum! Happy hour until 6:30 so what a deal! The taro chips were also spot on cuz they were light and crisp and lightly salted. Tastes way better than the fake ones you buy in a bag at the supermarket. Also ordered this during happy hour so the price was reasonable. The rest of the dishes were okay but nothing that made me feel like I have to return for. The meats were tender but it had been simmering in a big pot in the back and it's not freshly simmered. Maybe all the dishes have to be made this way so I don't really want to mark them down too much. The cook was super sweet and kept smiling at us. The cashier seemed a bit frazzled but was also really nice. It's a nice little friendly spot that I'd stop in for happy hour.

Yelp
There seem to be so many hidden gems on 24th. When my friend found out that this restaurant was featured on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, we knew we had to try it out. We ordered: * Ceviche Mixto: a refreshing starter with shrimp, fish, and a mango and jicama salsa. We ordered the taro chips on the side (+$3.50). * Tostones: crispy, smashed, and fried green plantains. They were SO crispy and the garlic sauce on the side added a nice flavor addition. * Lechon Horneado: roasted pork marinated in a garlic, achiote seasoning blend. We swapped the white rice with arroz con gandules (+$2.50). When we initially arrived at the restaurant around 7 pm on a Thursday evening, there was no one else inside, and it took a while for the server to recognize us. But he quickly came over once he realized and was friendly, recommending the main dish for us when we couldn't decide. I'd come back here just for the experience of the food alone - it was delicious!

Yelp
I've been to a few Caribeño restaurants in SF and I like this place best. This is a Cuban/Puerto Rican restaurant and for those of you who don't know there has always been a friendly rivalry among Cuban, Puerto Rican and Dominicans in regards to cuisine. I'm Puerto Rican so of course I might be a little biased but I think Puerto Ricans do comida criolla best. Dominicans go a little too buck wild (cow lung and candied habichuelas?) while Cubans think a roast pork/ham/swiss cheese sandwich is gourmet (I tease, I tease!). I think you can never go wrong with a mix of tostones, pasteles, yuca con bacalao, arroz con habichuelas and mofongo. This place has excellent mofongo with arroz con habichuelas. My only complaint is that they don't have tembleque. It's been years since I've had tembleque.

Yelp
Literally the best food I've ever had. No kizzy. This sh*t so good I throw it on my b**ch while I f**k her

Yelp
Delish! The ceviche, ropa vieja and mango salad were great. Server was great and would go back again.

Yelp
I love when a friend's random recommendation to try a new restaurant results in delightful dining experience. Do yourself a favor and check this place out. Not only was the food delicious, fresh, and perfectly portioned, but the service was spectacular. My friend and I both enjoyed our entrees. The beef and chicken empanadas were fantastic. The plantains were not overly sweet, which made me happy. But OMG my ropa vieja was so tender and seasoned to such perfection I think it may have lasted 3 minutes on my plate. Our waitress was nice, with a great sense of humor, and attentive. The owner, who we met toward the end of our meal, is awesome! I love when I can walk out a restaurant with a big smile on my face. She definitely ensured that. We will be back!

Yelp
I was living in this hood for eight years and I've been wanting to try this place. After moving to the outer mission I finally came back and tried this place. It is so cute, it made me feel like i was out of town with all the decor. Great staff and service. we asked Jessica ( our waitress) to surprise us with some dishes and it did not disappoint. Everything was super delicious that we will be coming back for more to try other dishes. On top of it all the taro chips were home made and so yum. Surprisingly they only had a few people there. Id definitely recommend this place and after eating you can take a stroll down 24th street.

Yelp
First off, I travel the world trying new foods and cuisines . I love the fact that the restaurant is family owned and operated, but the food was not tasty nor was it flavorful. For starters, my order was made incorrectly twice. The Puerto Rican rice was dry, overcooked, and lacked flavor. The sauce used for the tostones and yucca fries fries was just sour and tasted like Italian salad dressing. I did enjoy the yucca frita fries, but unfortunately not enough to bring me back to this restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
I discovered this restaurant during Black Restaurant Week and I am so glad that I did! While el Nuevo Fruitlandia has an unassuming appearance, the looks and flavors of each dish are quite the opposite -- bold and beautiful. We started with the veggie mofongo and yuca frito. The garlic, onions, and peppers gave the mofongo a predominantly savory flavor but it had a lovely sweet undertone from the plantains. The flavors were rich and comforting. The fried plantains offered a subtle crunch while the interior was soft and chewy. Absolutely delicious. The yucca frito was a bit dry, but the flavors were right. The citrusy dipping sauce had a great flavor, but was very liquidy and took away from the crunch of the fried exterior. If I were to do it again, I'd pass on the yucca frito. The Ropa Vieja exemplified Caribbean flavors. It was not spicy, but was incredibly well spiced. The dish was almost stew-like and sat upon a brothy, tomato-y, pool. The braised, shredded, steak was succulent and tender. The meal was very meat heavy -- not a bad thing, just something to know before ordering. Oh my gosh the flan. Absolute perfection. The caramelized top was spot on and the texture was unbeatable. It was one of the best pieces of flan I've ever had.

Yelp
What an incredible experience at this restaurant! We had a birthday celebration with 18 guests, which was planned very last minute. The staff was very friendly and easy to work with, from the coordinating of the event to the actual dinner service. From the moment I stepped through the front door I felt like I had teleported to the Caribbean. The salsa music playing in the background made me want to move my body. The colors and decor really warmed up the place in a beautiful way. The food was deliiiishhh, authentic Cuban and Puerto Rican cuisine. The Vaca Frita plate had to be the favorite. Considering that we were such a large party, the food and drinks were prepared and brought out at the perfect pace. The portions were large, so plenty of leftovers. Thank you for making my birthday extra special!
google avatar

Ivan D.

Yelp
The ropa vieja and picadillo are a little heavy-handed on the cumin seasoning, however, overall, the dishes are solid and tasty. What stood out the most was their sweet plantains (maduros) which were perfect. My only criticism was the price per dish. At those prices, the black beans should be included with the entree. I don't mind having to pay a la carte for the plantains.
google avatar

Alice G.

Yelp
ARE YOU KIDDING ME! Puerto Rican cravings satisfied above and beyond. The empanadas were juicy and perfectly crispy on the outside. The rice was so flavorful and not dry best place I've eaten in sf in awhile. Customer service was so nice. Perfect mom and pop vibe.

Yelp

Yelp
The food was good, but I am not satisfied with the entire experience. We were going to use 10% Yelp coupon I got when I checked in, the waiter told me she doesn't know how to add that, so basically you need to pat the full amount. I was like WHAT??? My friend who was treating us dinner said it was fine. He paid and tipped well. Then we ordered some food to go. They messed up the order and mixed beef and vegetarian fried dumplings ( I forget what it is called). The waiter who doesn't know how to apply the coupon apologized several times, BUT the other lady was so impolite, and kept say that's why we don't do mixed. Anyway, the food is fine, but the experience is not.

Yelp
Food was absolutely delicious. Tostones were plumb, maduros were nicely browned. The empanadas always delicious. My husband devoured the Ropa frita & I had to take some of mt Ropa Veija home because the portion was so generous. Jessica was so welcoming & we enjoyed her choice of music. It was good ol Puerto Rican comfort food!

Yelp
Had never tried Cuban food before so thought I would try Fruitlandia. The Shrimp Camarones were yummy - cooked perfectly with a tangy sauce. The veggie empanadas were crispy, light and HUGE. The yuca fries were crispy and thick cut with a nice tangy dipping sauce. The chicken mofongo was tasty, but it was really dense and a little hard to cut through. I am no mofongo expert, but I saw it was featured on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives so I was eager to try it. It was not my favorite, but I would definitely order the shrimp and empanadas again. Overall, the food was enjoyable although very rich. Looking forward to trying their other dishes!!

Yelp
Great mofongo and arroz con Gandules today! I like the quality of their food. I even more enjoy how their food is not greasy like so many other Puerto Rican restaurants I have visited. I'll come back on the regular!

Yelp
As a Cuban-American this place was a flashback to my Abuela's kitchen. Ropa vieja is amazing and the empanadas are heaven! You won't want to miss it!

Yelp
Came here for dinner over the weekend! The staff is really nice and the food came fast. We had ropa vieja and lechon. They were both good, maybe too much sauce though but good! They were out of flan so i had tres leches instead.

Yelp
*short review but I'll be updating when I eat here again* Got delivery via yelp on a Friday night. They had a cool looking storefront and awesome menu so my friends and I made a spontaneous choice to eat here (also we love cuban food!). We ordered the mango salad, plantains, chile relleno with mixed veggie filling, and their tres leches cake. Order was ready in under 30 minutes. When we picked it up we were informed by the very polite person working that they had to make some changes to the salad due to a shortage. It was all handled really well and I appreciated the clarity. As for the food itself, it all looked really good and was pretty tasty. The tres leches cake was a hit and the plantains were good, though I didn't really get any of the kahlua flavor and they were a little underripe. Chile relleno was also good but the rice (which is supposed to be just plain white rice) was odd and not like typical white rice. A bit confusing there. In any case will definitely going back to try other classic dishes like the ropa vieja and mofongo, as well as their super tasty sounding sangria!

Yelp
Delicious latin food! Will absolutely be coming back. Vegetarian Mofongo: 10/10 Maduros - Sweet Plantains: 15/10 Yuca Frita: 8/10 Hospitality: 20/10 This restaurant puts a lot of love and thought behind its dishes. You notice it through their sazon! I had been curious to try mofongo, and I'm so glad I did. I can't wait to have it more! Also, I can't speak highly enough of the staff. They are truly welcoming and make you feel a part of the amazing Mission community. I'll be returning to try the rest of the dishes!!

Yelp
As a boricua and proud latina I was so excited to see a Puerto Rican restaurant in San Francisco! But I'm sad to say that the food was very untraditional and heavily lacked flavor. The mofongo was okay at best but I've definitely had way WAY better at el coqui in Sonoma California. The tostones were pretty good but it's pretty hard to mess up tostones. The ambiance and restaurant was cool and had a very Caribbean Puerto Rican/Cuban vibe. The service was good I guess but I felt like it was award with the server I had. And the white rice with Puerto Rican food?! Thats just embarrassing. I almost wonder if a white person made this shii. Adios - Tú local puertorriqueña

Rachel M.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday afternoon for lunch and had the pink beans with butternut squash, Puerto Rican-style rice, and green plantains. Delicious! Efficient service, clean restaurant with a friendly vibe. They also have a parklet. Would come back again.

Yelp
This is a cute neighorhood spot in the Mission with a lot of Puerto Rican and Cuban flavor for decoration. Clearly the owners have a lot of pride in their culture which is great! My friend and I made a reservation for Friday night at 7 pm two days earlier, but we really didn't need it as it was mostly empty when we arrived and was never too full the entire time we were there. We started with a carafe of their rose guava sangria ($22), enough for about 2 glasses per person. I didn't really taste the guava but it was good sangria. I just wish the diced apple pieces didn't all float at the top of the carafe. My friend poured first and she got all of the apple pieces which just sat floating in her glass as she didn't want it. We shared the picadillo (i.e. Cuban ground beef) empanadas for $9 and these were delicious. A great start to the meal. However, the rest of my meal was quite disappointing. They have three house specialties, and after reading raving reviews about their lechon horneado ($16.50) on Yelp, I decided to try that. It's a Puerto Rican dish with slow roasted pork marinated in garlic and pineapple, served with arroz con gandules (Puerto Rican rice). I don't know if they were having an off night but my lechon was really dry and bland. The top layers of the lechon already didn't have much flavor, and by the time I got to the bottom half, it was completely bland. I hate dry meat and had a really hard time getting through even half of the dish. I almost never leave food on my plate (always try to take it home if I can't finish), but I could only finish half and didn't have the heart to bring the rest home. My friend took a bite and agreed. She got the mofongo and really enjoyed that though.

Yelp
Found this gem of a place while browsing for some delivery options. Everything looked so great so we ordered a bunch of items. Ceviche Mixto - The best item ordered. A perfect balance of fresh, tart and juicy. Although I wish the fish pieces were a bit softer, I wouldn't hesitate to order it again. Simply delicious! Empanadas - These were good. Nothing to complain about. The outside was crispy and the beef mix inside was tasty. Yucca Fries - I wish these were moist. They were a bit dried out which made for me lukewarm experience. The garlic lemon sauce that it came with was delicious though! Mango Salad - I liked the mangoes in the salad and the cucumber and jicama but the salad itself was a bit past it's prime so sadly had to toss most of it out. The sauce was on the sweeter side and was pretty yummy. A good compliment to the salad. Platanos Maduros - Another delicious item. They glazed it in Kaulua butter which I'm not entire sure what it is but it tasted like the plantains has been glazed with some chocolate. It went well with the sweet plantains. Flan - A tad bit sweet for me but it was creamy goodness. A good consistency. Pastelitos de Guayaba - This was the main reason we ordered from this place but unfortunately this was our least favorite item. It was kinda dry and felt a bit old. Overall, a solid place to order from and 100% recommend. Can't wait to eat here in person!

Yelp
I got the Frutilandia combo plate and it was sooooo good! Everything was freshly made and tasting. All veggie too! It includes sweet plantains, green plantains (tostones), yucca fries, taro chips, and an empanada of your choice. I had never tried their sauces before, but I loved them! One is a garlic citrus sauce (mojo de ajo) and it was my favorite! The other was a sriracha spicy cream sauce. Both complimented the food very well. Next time I'd like to try their mofongo (veggie) since it was on the Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives show.

Yelp
I'm a fan of this place. Puerto Rican food on 24th Street. This was for a take out order. We didn't call ahead, but we waited outside and the food was done quickly and ready for us. We ordered Chicken in Creole Sauce (excellent flavor and delicious), shredded steak (which was plentiful and also had a good, slow-cooked flavor), and a side of yucca frita. The online menu has photos of what everything is, so if you're not sure of something check it out or ask. The staff there are friendly and helpful. We ended our meal with a piece of tres leches cake. It was the perfect kind of moist, and fantastic. Light and rich at the same time. How do they do that? All in all a very good meal.

Yelp
I just ordered food via Doordash and was not disappointed one bit. We ordered a few entrees and tapas to share. In my opinion, the standout dish was the camarones al creole! This is shrimp with squash and a little kick of spice. It's paired with white rice, but if you want to upgrade it to Puerto Rican rice then by all means do so. I would say that I prefer a flakier crust for an empanada. Nonetheless, the dough was good and the filling was even better. You can choose from chicken, beef, or veggie. We chose beef this time around, and are looking forward to trying chicken or veggie next time. My favorite part of the meal has got to be the dessert or to some it's a tapa in itself. It's actually....... *drumroll please*...... sweet plantains!!!! *chefs kisses*

Yelp
Unassuming but beautifully vibrant upon stepping inside. The pop of colors welcome you with Latin warmth. The wood was presently beautifully and tasted impeccable. Hands down one of the best empanadas I've ever had, as they deep fry skin. Definitely get the empanadas. The pork dish "Lechon Horneado" is a must get - the meat is so soft and tender, infused with great flavor and sauce. Would definitely return. Great service and what a friendly host.

Yelp
We arrived minutes before opening (on 7/13) and had a long wait because the Chef was late. That said, once the Chef arrived, "El Nuevo Frutilandia" made it up for us. The Sangria is very good; leaving a beautiful sweet taste after each sip. The ceviche is delicious. We loved the Taro chips. We were intrigued when saw the mofongo on vegetable broth, but it worked. Final verdict: We had a pleasant experience and will come back.

Yelp
Bad customer service. The server took over 30min just to give us our drinks AFTER we had ordered our food. The table next to us got their drinks after they finished there food. This is not acceptable!. The waiter was washing the cups with his hands NOT a sponge! DISGUSTING!!!!

Yelp
We decided to order takeout from here because of it's appearance on Diners Drive-in's and Dives. They are currently only doing takeout. I'm not sure what to say exactly. I think I was expecting more. I ordered the shrimp creole and honestly it was very tasty and I would recommend it! The sauce was the highlight. Very rich and creamy. It really complimented the rice well. But, the shrimp just wasn't as good as I had expected, given that they're so close to the ocean. My boyfriend got the Cuban seared steak and it was okay. It was a little dry and a little bland. It just needed something more I think. I am going to give them the benefit of doubt and assume it was a little subpar because it was takeout only. However, for the steep price, I expect it to be a bit higher quality.

Yelp
We ordered just about everything on the menu--the waitress even commented on it by far the best dish was the ropa vieja. Cannot recommend enough. The ropa vieja is really what would drive me to come back. Everything else was good, not outstanding. We came with a native Puerto Rican and while she said it scratched the itch, nothing is like at home. She agreed the ropa vieja was the best. We all though the mofongo was just a little dry and the deserts were just ok.
