Where to Eat and Drink in Pilsen | Eater Chicago

"There isn’t a bad taco to pick at El Nuevo Taconazo, an unassuming taqueria in a strip-mall. But pick the al pastor with pineapple. It’s crispy and covered with onions and cilantro. Fill the rest of it up with salsa, served on a platter to pick and choose from whether verde or rojo." - Eater Staff

Google
Good Mexican food. Taco dinner was worth the value. Fast service.

Google
Burritos, tacos & tortas are really good. Late night spot with friendly service.

DK

Google
One of the most authentic mexican restaurants, that serves some top-tier tacos, especially tripas. I feel like maybe 25% of mexican restaurant serves tripas, and I like all of them, but I really like tripas from here. Tacos here are classic as you can be, double corn tortilla with just onion and cilantro. As you sit down, 3 types of salsa and chips are served, and you put 1 of those salsa on tacos, it is so good. Horchata here is also really good, not too sweet, not too cinnamon in it. And this place is always busy with locals. Highly recommended!

Ken Campbell

Google
Great place to eat authentic tacos or anything else that you might like they had three different sauces. The food is excellent. They have a good deal on taco dinner with beans and rice. The tacos are always hot. They are very good if you want to get tomatoes and cheese on them or whatever how you like them

Google
This establishment offers a truly elevated dining experience. The ambiance is sophisticated yet welcoming, creating the perfect backdrop for a memorable meal. From the moment you enter, the attentive staff makes you feel like a valued guest. Each dish is a culinary masterpiece, showcasing fresh, high-quality ingredients and innovative flavor combinations. The presentation is exquisite, a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. The service is seamless and professional, enhancing the overall enjoyment. This restaurant sets a high standard for their tacos and is an absolute must-try. It's an unforgettable experience that will leave you wanting more.

Google
The food was good. Got a carne asada burrito which has a good amount of filling (next time I think I'd add rice). Also their horcata is tasty

Google
Have to say it's a really nice place hot food and good food. Very good seasoning on tacos and they made the food fast. Will have to try breakfast food one day but a great place to eat at i truly recommend.

Hani

Google
It is not a fancy mexican restaurant. It is authentic one. With handmade tortia. I love the Menudo soup. Great taste 👌 Nice stuff 👏

Yelp
Honestly wasn't the best torta I've had , it felt like it was missing some components to me. The chips were stale and lack salt. The price was good for what it was. The carne asada burrito my pal had come to a 4/5 but for me the below par torta got left in my car because it was forgettable. 2/5
google avatar

Daniel R.

Yelp
OPEN LATE everyday. Tacos(asada/pastor) and tortas are good. I'd recommend this place during the week as a spot to grab some quick food in the late night. I've dined in once the place is your normal taqueria. Very clean on my visit.
google avatar

Jose V.

Yelp
fast food type and greasy! service was mediocre. I have eating in many places similar to this one, but it does not come near to reasonable quality.

Jill F.

Yelp
This low a rating for such an iconic taqueria is embarrassing, this place is always great. The prices have gone up quite a bit but the selection of salsas are amazing and the food is always great. Love this place so many happy memories here. The service is always extremely efficient and speedy.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
Instead of a receiving check, tell the cashier your table number and she will ring you up. I ordered 2 tacos (el pastor and lamb) and one quesadilla con carne (I assume the carne was beef). All 3 items were good, but the lamb taco particularly stood out with a generation helping of sweet, tender meat. A plate of chips and a selection of 3 salsas to start made the meal even better. It is not something one expects in a place this casual.

Res R.

Yelp
I have seen the price go up a lot here latley i do like the food here but the price is a bit too expensive i would still go once in a while but i would not make this my spot i would begin looking for another spot where price is more reasonable
google avatar

Yelp
Food here is ok.Not bad. They are located at a major intersection and they do have a big parking lot.Parking is easy.Food is mediocre.Good enough to keep me from starving.Their agua de horchata was delicious though. If youre looking for FANTASTIC TACOS in Pilsen just head on over to RUBI'S TACOS.Nuff said.
google avatar

Yelp
Filling burrito, not too salty and loved the variety of salsas that came with! All were tasty. Would definitely come back.

Karlie S.

Yelp
I came here on a Sunday for lunch and really enjoyed the quick service and great prices. The Tacos are ~$2.50 each and include a generous portion size. These tacos are very authentic. The favorite was the Al Pastor. I also got the Chile Relano and Vegetarian taco. I was not a huge fan of the Chile Relano as it was very greasy. The rice and beans are excellent and I LOVED the FOUR FREE SALSAS they bring out with chips when you sit down. All in all this place is a very authentic, quick service restaurant in a convenient location. I will return and try the soups next time.

Elisa S.

Yelp
Staff is nice but the food is always a hit or miss. Sometimes it's amazing and sometimes it's just straight awful and soggy. Today is my last time here due to inconsistency. I just had the WORST burrito here I ever had and I've been going here for 4+ years. The burrito was so soggy that it was leaking with tomate juice, the beans were watery, and avocados were brown. It seemed like they straight to didn't care. There are better places than here. I rather spend my money elsewhere.
google avatar

Daniel F.

Yelp
Have been a longtime customer of this place and they have never let me down. Really generous with portions and quality of food is solid. I'm a fan of their birria and al pastor. Their table side salsas are delicious and overall can't go wrong with this location
google avatar

Lulu R.

Yelp
El taconazo, I love the tacos and I definitely wanna "taco" bout it. Sometimes I come in here for a quick bite that will never disappoint. Super easy to get to place with a small lot. The restaurant itself is a medium sized one with about 15 tables. They serve a ton of different foods but I am talking about their taco and torta game. Which is on point. So on arrival you get a big container with compartments that have different types of salsa. Homemade tortilla chips which are always fresh and if you're lucky, warm fresh out the fryer. The different types of salsa gives me the variety that I need. I always order the chile relleno taco, asada and alpastor. I order them with avocado because, why not? The service is fast as hell and ,my man friend gets the milanesa torta and love it as well. The tacos are on the smaller side so feel free to order more than one. This place is clean, and the pricing is reasonable. Open late for your convenience.

Yelp
My first experience here was maybe 8 years ago. I didn't like it too much. Gave TacoNazo another shot a few month back and I'm here a few times a month. This place is opened until 2AM on weekdays and 4AM on weekends. My go-to for tacos in the Pilsen area, post gym meal, and late night munchies; ya really can't go wrong. The Food - Taco portions are generous, taste is consistent. I usually go with Taco de Lomo an Taco de bistec. Prices are $2.25 - $2.5 per taco. The service - Great service, haven't had any bad experience even if I go at 1AM or when the restaurant has a line out the door. Very efficient workers overall. Pricing - Reasonable pricing $2 - $3 per taco depending on what you get, burritos are a good size. You get your bang for your buck here. Parking - Plaza parking lot, spots are a bit tight, never had a problem finding parking no matter what hour I go. Overall - My go to taco spot in the Pilsen area. Highly recommended.

Yelp
When did this place get so expensive? 17$ for a taco dinner and a large horchata!! Food is good but there's other places better for this type of money!

Elina M.

Yelp
Just finished eating here and they charged me for my meal on top of charging me for ordering food? I'm still confused on how they did this. According to staff they can change the prices whenever and however they want. Last I checked their menu doesn't say market prices. Never going back. service
google avatar

Adrian C.

Yelp
Really good place for tacos, burritos, tortas and much more highly recommended coming in and trying it out you will not be disappointed at all weekends are open more late highly recommend coming in even the chips are really good and the best part the salsas they have

Godly S.

Yelp
Don't go after 8PM. The moron cooks don't know how to read. Too busy flirting with each other to understand a simple order.
google avatar

Elias M.

Yelp
This is based on my last experience, I ordered for take out (COVID). After I get home 10 minutes after, I realize there was a Gordita that was not included in my meal. I checked my receipt and sure enough, they were able to bill me for it. When I called, all I received was a "you're right, I forgot to order it, would you like to come back for it?" No apology, no offer to bring it to me, considering the rest of the food that was ordered would now be eaten cold or microwaved. When I went in to pick it up, about 3 people said they had no idea what I was talking about. Even when the rest of the order was found, still no apology for the inconvenience or the fact that the other $40 worth of food would now be less warm when eaten based on THEIR mistake.
google avatar

Patrice M.

Yelp
So good! Like, so damn good! Love this place. I love pretty close stop by often because it's a place where I know I can get great tacos, for a good price, and receive excellent customer service. I would highly recommend!
google avatar

Michelle I.

Yelp
This location is simply okay. They always mess up the ingredients I order on my tacos.
google avatar

Jaclyn W.

Yelp
Literally the best carne asada burrito I've had in a LONG time. Burrito's are $8, mine had steak, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, lettuce, tomato. The burrito had so much flavor and was well worth the price. There was a lot of steak and it was seasoned well. I'll be back!
google avatar

Trebor S.

Yelp
This is my second time writing a review for this restaurant . After many years after my unpleasant experience with them, nothing has changed. The meat here is difficult to chew, the service was bad, and the way my food was prepared was upsetting. You won't fool me the third time, taconazo
google avatar

Gorja D.

Yelp
Great carne asada tacos and corn tortillas are awesome! Fast service for dine in and to go orders!
google avatar

Gina C.

Yelp
The tacos here are average. The prices are low. I definitely wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but it's convenient and I have no complaints. The staff is always super nice. During the corona pandemic they are all in masks and require a mask to go in. I feel very safe eating here, which I can't say about a lot of restaurants right now.

Yelp
Fist time visiting this location. I am a north-sider and lately, its getting harder and harder to find a true still true to its root Mexican taqueria as most now seem to cater to the non-hispanic crowd. Everything we had here was tasty....really liked the homemade tortillas and the hot chocolate/tamarindo water was very good. We had good service and the place looked pretty clean. I think that the people who rate it low has to come to the north side and they will see that in comparison, this place is pretty high up there. The only thing I was not too pleased with was that my taco de lomo was a little too charred for my liking but the caldo my husband ordred and tacos de lengua for my kids were tasty.

Osiel D.

Yelp
Crappy food, crappy service, & the best part is according to the cashier they don't have to tell you that prices changed nor change the prices on the menu. You think you paying one thing but they charge you something else... I guess advertising one price but charging something else isn't stealing to them. After tasting their food your better off going to the Taco Bell down the block.

Felipe V.

Yelp
I wish I would of taken a picture of the lengua Tacos I had, super small, almost no meat, and if one is charging $3.50 per taco...at least put some meat in it....want a shame...buyer beware!
google avatar

Johnny H.

Yelp
WOOOOHHHHHHH..... First time here. Super My food was excellent and so was the service. Loved that the waitress wasn't up our ass but was also very at tentative. Definitely coming back. The tacos de tripitas were worth the drive. Thank you guys! Great Job!

Sam T.

Yelp
I got a nice cashier and server to hand me my food , but overall food was very expensive for the portion. There was barely any meat in my carne asada tacos. I'm very disappointed since I live close by and always thought it was pretty tasty!
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
The True authentic Mexican taste. Al Pastor to die for. The four salsas are amazing and generous. The service was very fast. No complaints!

Sonia G.

Yelp
Walked in on a Saturday night with my family to enjoy some dinner, waitress took our order, took 30 minutes for us to get our food to turn out half of our order wasnt even correct or ready, waitress had took half our order & wrote it down wrong. My parents decided to order a Carne Asada dinner so in total we had 3 dinners & when they got the food served to our table the plates didn't seem so appealing at all the meat was literally burned & to top it off they only had served like 1 1/2 piece of small meat. They have the worst customer service, waitress have a look in their face like of not wanting to be there or having a bad day. I really wished I had taken pictures of the food. I wouldn't recommend this place at all. Was my favorite restaurant but after today's experience wont be eating there again We left the restaurant really disappointed.

Yelp
It was day one of Riot Fest 2015, the fest had ended for the night and Uber was at 4x. A couple guys wanted food so badly they were hopping from one fast food location to the next hoping they would sell something to the hungry at their drive-up window. In case it isn't clear, they were walking up to the drive-thru. Needless to say, but down in that hood, no one was entertaining that notion. So, to Toconazo we went. One of the guys had asked, does this place have a good rating? Someone responded, who cares.. it's the South side, Mexican food is better down here. The place comes off as being "a la carte". If dining in, take a seat and wait to be helped with menus. After you've dined, approach the counter and tell them what you've eaten. Tabs are rung up by what's been ordered and by whom. (I would bet some waiters get "stiffed" with some bills.) I only ordered something because the rest of the group was and sitting outside wasn't as comfortable. (I wasn't much interested.) Didn't check reviews but made my assessment off of the smells inside. (Also, I had an extremely satisfying al pastor burrito from Primo Chucki's on the Northside, earlier in the day. Which was devoured around 2 pm and somehow, I was still content.) It didn't smell too good inside. Weird smells in different areas of the restaurant. Ya know when a business first moves into a location, I expect that they call a decent maid service and bleach the shit out of everything.. That's what I expect though I don't believe that was the case. Regarding the restroom, I wouldn't use it even if diarrhea depended on it. Food was edible. On some walls are food photos and I wondered whether we were ordering the correct items. You know, like maybe this place is known not for tacos but for menudo or stews. Everyone ordered something because the guys wanted to dine in. Flautas, tacos and guacamole. Chips and salsa were served on the house, I think. If not for the assorted salsas, this would be a 2 star review. When the guac hit the table, I was a little disappointed to see the same tortilla chips (from the bowl) used as garnish. After eating a bowl of okay chips, you kinda want something different. Ya' know? I ordered a lengua taco which was decent. The flautas were alright, though I would never order them again.. from here. As said previously, food was okay just like the service was okay, except for a few items being forgotten or just, not addressed. The experience was meh, but by the time we finished, we got a Lyft fairly quickly and for a decent rate. And that's about it.
google avatar

Justin L.

Yelp
I came here with some friends the other night. We just got out of class and we were really hungry. It was recommended to get the milkshakes so I ordered a papaya milkshake with my meal. The papaya milkshake was perfect. Not too watery, just enough milk, texture, and sweetness. They definitely had the formula right on this one. I ordered al pastor tacos and chicken tacos. Those were not the best tacos but they were respectable. I think the pastor could have used a little more seasoning. Our waitress was nice but she didn't come around as often as I would like. The chips and salsa gets you thirsty. Overall a pretty decent spot.
google avatar

Ndidi B.

Yelp
One of my, if not the absolute, favorite Mexican restaurants in Chicago. I rant to all my loved ones about this place, ALL. THE. TIME. Hubs, mom and I have been here enough to probably be considered for employment. My recommendations are the pineapple/celery/lime juice, ceviche tostada con Valentina hot sauce, chicken enchiladas in red sauce, chile rellano platter and chille rellano tacos. These guys are also the only Mexican restaurant that I know to give you 5 different salsas with your free chips. I don't know the name of the spicy green one with the red onions, that comes in the mini avocado bowl but I wish they could bottle it and inject into my veins. It's that good. They lose a star bc the food is noticeably crappier in the evenings and at night. Best bet is to eat here in the morning/early afternoon.

Yelp
This place is Super! And pretty authentic. After one crazy summer living in Cuernavaca, México, I fell in love with the City of Eternal Spring and its famous puerco al pastor. This joint is the first I've found in the United States in SIX YEARS that does al pastor the REAL way - on a spindle. ¡Riquisimo! Al pastor is a kabob-style way of cooking pork. Like the Greek gyro kabob and the German donor kabob, pork al pastor is traditionally cooked vertically on a huge spindle. A mexicano al pastor kabob is made of a hundred or more thin layers of marinated pork with juices dripping down the sides. A full al pastor kabob is the size of a small to medium sized billygoat. For a look inside este paradiso, check out mis fotos. I had chips and salsa, 3 tacos and waitress service, and my tab was $5.95 with tax. P.S. You may want to be extra specific when ordering the Rib Eye Taco. My ribeye taco came with taste buds. Cash only.

Yelp
Tried out this lowkey Mexican restaurant in Pilsen neighborhood, and was pleasantly surprised. It's located in a mini mall strip with parking lot, so very convenient if your driving. Came in and ordered the chicken torta, and al pastor and steak tacos. Both dishes were so good and flavorful:) definitely will be coming back !
google avatar

Benjamin M.

Yelp
First time here and we loved it... The gorditas are on point... Best salsas and chips ever...not expensive at all and good service... Tacos are delicious . Im from the northwest side but i will be happy to vistit this place again whenever i have a chance again. The only down side its that they dont serve liquor.. Not a big deal.
google avatar

Carrie G.

Yelp
Lots of options of places to go for a taco in Pilsen. This is our go-to! Food quality is consistent. Nice family atmosphere. Hard to beat it!

Ray R.

Yelp
The service is not attentive. The location is not very inviting. The food order has been wrong the last 2 times. The portion sizes are small for what you pay for. I will not visit again. The tacos are not great at all.
google avatar

Robert D.

Yelp
I must say, pretty good tacos. I've been coming here for some time now and this place have been consistent thus far. To top it off they close late. Which means if your out around 12 midnight or 1 in the morning don't hesitate, this is the place.
google avatar

Frank F.

Yelp
$8 bucks for a burrito. This is México in a bite. Grilled steak with beans, avocado, lettuce and tomato. Great flavor, great balance of steak with the other ingredients. Price is up there but this place is authentic.
google avatar

Jessi L.

Yelp
I feel like I left Chicago for an hour. There was no rush, the service was great and the food was delicious. I'd never had poszole before and on cold, wet day, it was "everything I never knew I always wanted." Another superstar was the hot chocolate, done in traditional Mexican style with cream, chocolate and a hint of cinnamon. Absolutely perfect. I can't wait to go back to try the sopas! The only down for me is that I would disagree with Cassidy on the parking front. That parking lot is a mess but I suppose compared to zoned street parking or $10-$15 valet fees, it's not awful and certainly no bad enough to consider missing out on the goodness inside.
google avatar

Zach F.

Yelp
Good, reasonably priced food. I do agree with some other reviews that the food is not as good later in the night. The gotta bread here is thinner and more moist than a lot of other places, which I really liked. Of everything I have eaten here, the Milanese de pollo gotta was my favorite. Service is friendly and fast, but you pay at the front when you are done, so don't wait for them to bring you a check or you will be there all day.
google avatar

Frankie K.

Yelp
I visited Taconazo on a Blizzard day it was about a cool 65 degrees inside so i kept my jacket on. I ordered quesdillas with steak on them. It came with tomatoes and lettuce with 2 small corn tortillas. The waitress came in fast but did not speak English (4 my anglo friends). She brought us chips and multiple salsa my partner asked for off the menu "crema" which was free and you can dip you chips in that also. Food came within 5 minutes and was pretty good the steak is not grade A but will do with salsa on it. BE aware the pastor and the steak are precooked so it may be dry depending on when you visit. It is obvious if you stand by the counter and watch as all the juices are dried out due to overcooking. Parking is pretty good due to the fact it is located in a strip mall. Now for the Minus The washroom looks like a scene from a 1970's slasher movie (piks provided) Beware of the vagrants they pressure single women to give them change at all times of day. So if you feel like not driving far and paying a little this is your spot.

Yelp
we were very excited to see they were on grbbhub= but unfortunately whenthe order arrived it was in vey bad shape. the enchilada had slipped out of the box and were in the bag and some if the items were missing- when i called to inquire about the missing items they were very rude and kept insisting that we hadn't paid for the items- which we had - - Rude Service and poor preparation for the delivery service - we would have given them another chance if the girl who answered the phone was so rude

Yelp
El Nuevo Taconazo where do I start. Mexican Food is my favorite and finding authentic recipes can be challenging. There are so many to choose from in Chicago. I stumbled upon this one while riding down Kedzie and decided to stop for tacos. I read a few reviews on Yelp and then proceeded in. At a glance the first thing I noticed that the place was clean and well kept. As soon as I entered I was greeted by more than one person and they all made me feel welcome. I was immediately greeted by my waitress who bring over free chips and salsa. I have been so hooked on Cocula chips and salsa since 2002 that most other places I've been too just don't compare. There were 5 different types of salsa to choose from and they all were really good. I ordered the pollo taco as well as the carne Assad taco. The tacos were ok not bad but nothing extraordinary either. I agree with some of the reviews as far as it may not be the highest quality nevertheless it cured my hunger pains. I give this place 3 stars. It's a small family friendly spot with cafeteria style seating but nothing extraordinary. Tacos are 3 out of 5 but the chips and salsa made up for it, as well as my servers prompt and courteous customer service. Someone had a bowl of Pollo soup that looked and smelled amazing so maybe next time I'll try the soup. Cheap, inexpensive, fast dining, authentic Mexican food. It's located inside of s strip mall so there is lots of parking.

Diana C.

Yelp
The restaurant definitely needs a lot of work in terms of customer service. I had to return my plate back twice and it still didn't get made correctly. The server brought my Gordita and it was not cooked with the correct ingredients like it stated on the menu. When I pointed out that the food was not cooked right the server replied with, "You're right that's not how it's made but, I didn't want to argue with the cook" it just doesn't make sense for you to serve me a plate knowing that it's not cooked adequately .I also don't understand why the cook would have an issue with cooking food correctly? This says a lot about the restaurant itself and how they value their clientele. Will most definitely not be coming back.
google avatar

Mabel H.

Yelp
Their simply ok.... If you've had a few drinks and you want some ok tacos I recommend you come here. I love al pastor tacos but here their not consistent. One day their good the next their burnt the next their flavorless. I do have to say their tacos de lengua and chicken are really good. Their sopes are pretty good as well. Chips n salsa are good.

Yelp
Food is low quality. Staff is uneducated and mean spirited. Will never go again. Had a situation where my wallet got stolen while eating at El Nuevo Taconazo. Staff would not play back the security cameras. I was inform I needed to make a police report. I thought that was pointless it was easier and less time for me to cancel and replace my credit card, driver license etc. I was a regular at this hole in a wall establishment so I offer to go home get some money and pay. When I left and came back they had called the police on me. It was infuriating I told the cashier it was a shame to loose me as a customer and that I would never come back and that I would write a bad review. It ended with me being arrested a moth latter the cashier never showed up in court and the case was dismissed.
