Off the Grid Is Unlikely to Relaunch Any of Its Food Truck Events in 2021 | Eater SF

"I found that Miguel Escobedo's Al Pastor Papi, a Mexico City–style taco truck with more than 20,000 Instagram followers, relied on Off the Grid appearances for as much as 75 to 80 percent of its weekly business before the pandemic; after that income vanished he cobbled together collaborations with breweries, dispensaries and pop-up spots (even a gym parking lot in Redwood City) and, thanks to a strong social following, has finally seen sales return to pre-pandemic levels — but he says the experience taught him he needs more balance and can't let another business control the majority of his revenue." - Luke Tsai

We ate the most delicious and authentic Mexican food at this truck last week. 🌮🌯🥗 We had the shrimp tacos, nachos, and burrito bowl and everything was bursting with flavour! The shrimp was grilled to perfection and so juicy! The kids had cheese quesadillas which were so gooey and cheesy. The food was amazing, and the service made the experience even better. The workers at the food truck were so friendly and prepared our food so quick. Our family enjoyed a wonderful time at their cozy table beneath the string lights, which created the perfect ambiance. Overall, the food was mouthwatering and I can’t wait to be back and have another family dinner at this food truck. Next time you’re in the area, definitely go to this food truck!

🔥 El Paisa Quesabirrias Review 🔥 If you’re craving comfort food that hits with flavor, El Paisa’s quesabirrias are a must-try. Each tortilla is perfectly grilled to a golden crisp, stuffed with juicy, slow-braised birria beef that melts in your mouth, and loaded with gooey, stretchy cheese. The richness pairs beautifully with the side of consommé—savory, full-bodied, and perfect for dipping. Every bite balances crunch, tenderness, and bold spices, making it one of those meals you don’t forget. Authentic, filling, and straight-up delicious. 🌮💯

Google
No doubt some of the best tacos on the Peninsula. The owner always seems to remember his customers and is always friendly. Really hits the spot when it comes to Mexico City style tacos. Pastor and Suadero are my favorites here but the Lengua and Shrimp are also very special.

Kelvin C.

Google
One of the best taco truck in the area. Good portion, highly recommending their tasty briskets and Al Pastor Tacos. First time trying their Mulitas…. Basically top and bottom crispy taco with your choice of meat. And don’t forget to order their Hochata drink.

Barry L.

Google
Friendly team of fellows. Went just 30 minutes before closing, so perhaps they were already getting ready to close up for the night. Suadero, lengua and pastor tacos. Beans and rice were not all that hot temperature wise, kinda cold, and the lengua was not as soft as I like it. For me, the taste was very ordinary.

Mike Y.

Google
The tacos are tasty and generous portions. I felt lucky to be the first customer today. Highly recommend!

Craig B.

Google
Delicious tacos, friendly and speedy service. Special shout out to the man behind the counter- Rudy! Can't say much for the atmosphere since it's a truck in a parking lot, but thankful for the tables and awning for shade!

Gus G.

Google
Unassuming taco truck next to the Costco in Redwood City and it is my favorite spot! Super burrito is really good and fairly priced. Al pastor and asada are both super good. Mulitas are amazing!! We ate it so fast I couldn’t get a picture. The red sauce is pretty spicy so if ask for no red sauce if you don’t like spice. Great service too.

Yelp
Al pastor and steak tacos were absolutely bussing, easily 10/10. Insane flavor and the service was friendly.

Yelp
We came back here for a take out almost a year later. They have maintained food quality. Portion size is small, so still a bit pricey food truck for the price range but they have expanded the selection of self serve condiments. We enjoyed that. We again ordered a veggie and carnitas burrito Food 5/5: everything tasted fresh. Decent size burrito, perfect for one meal. Service 5/5 : took us about 10 mins from order to take out. Pretty swift and to the point. Ambiance NA: they don't have chair, tables, so best for take out Parking is easy to find as it is in the Costco parking lot

Yelp
Go for the really Good birria and suadero tacos ! The salsas are good The drinks are ok

Yelp
This was a decent truck. As such, there's not so much in the way of ambiance, but the service was efficient and quick. Even with a short line, they were slinging orders very efficiently. This review is for their nachos. It's a hefty portion and pretty heavily sauced with sour cream, pico de gallo, green salsa, and queso-style nacho cheese i.e. the liquid style and not shredded cheese. That last part is not for everyone, but I'm down on the right occasion. The meat was pretty good and overall it has a nice level of spice. I'd get this again.

Yelp
I happen to stumble upon this taco truck. It's in a really big plaza next to a Costco supermarket. Not sure if they move from time to time. Plenty of parking so you won't have and trouble. The service is great. The staff is very friendly and patient. They even have a chip reader so you can pay that way. Which should is the new standard in my opinion. The nachos is very good. Chips are crispy and the dipping sauce that is topped over the chips tastes delicious. Has the right amount of salt and not over bearing. I highly recommend.

Yelp
Oh yeah! Gimme the birria! Came here after a colonoscopy - I was hungry and stoned - the tacos were soo good - couldn't wait - ate them in the car lol - but then I realized they had birria - I was full and inconsolable hahaha oh my goodness well I returned a week later becasue it's next to OSH so I bought my new wet/dry vac and then ran over to the truck and ordered BIRRIA! SO GOOD! So happy! Again, broke German rules and ate it in my German vehicle - ate every bite and washed it down with a Mexican Coke aaaah - and was so full I had to wait a few minutes before driving home - I just wanted to enjoy the full and happy feeling - try this truck - the food is tasty and the birria was delicious and the consommé with it was tasty and so good when tacos were dipped in it - hmmm - might go get some now...

Yelp
I LOVE IT HERE!! I've been here twice during my lunch and they gave me my food quickly and it was really hot and fresh. I asked for my quesabirrias with everything and the salsa is so yummy and they are stuffed with meat!!! It also comes with a grilled jalapeño and tostada and the consome is the perfect amount for dipping and then drinking at the end. They have a salsa bar for your choosing as well! Super nice! Service is perfect , they're so considerate and silly too! I suggest bringing cash since they cover service costs and they're awesome! I'll come here as much as i can afford to lol so delicious! They have tables to eat at and a canopy which makes it perfect for food, great vibes and music playing. I love it here!

Yelp
Food - this place really hits it out of the park every time. I order the super nachos a lot and every time it's 5/5. Very generous meat portion, salsa is tasty but not too spicy and pricing is very fair. Service - the guys who operate the truck are super friendly and almost every time ask me if I want extra salsa. The service is also very fast. Ambiance - located in the parking lot of orchard supply next to Costco. Small taco truck, small sitting area.

Yelp
What's not to like!? Everything I've had is beyond wonderful! You can't go wrong! I'm so thankful food like this is in our neighborhood.

Yelp
Wow wow wow, what an unsuspecting food truck in Redwood City! Boyfriend and I needed dinner after 8:00pm and options were limited. We saw this food truck pop up on our route home and decided to try it out. One super burrito and one regular burrito, total was less than $35! We called ahead to order and pickup was fast and easy. Taste was fantastic and to me the best part was the my burrito didn't fall apart. Wasn't soggy, all components were great and this truck has made its way into the regular rotation when craving Mexican food up in the peninsula!!

Yelp
Summary: Unexpectedly tasty parking lot truck tacos Details: Maybe I've been burned one too many times by food trucks, but I definitely didn't expect to be as wowed by one as I was by El Paisa, what with their super flavorful meats and all! That said, not all their options are standout, with the much-acclaimed al pastor actually falling short in flavor for me, and the chorizo a bit too dry and hard. That aside though, the flavor of the chorizo was actually quite nice, and their lengua is probably one of the best I've had ever, with them serving up an entire thick cut SLICE of tongue, rather than chopping it into smaller pieces, which lets you really get a mouthfeel for how tender they're able to make it. If you're opting for this (and you really should), get it in taco form, since you lose this quality when getting it inside their burritos. Accessibility: It's a food truck with some portable seating outside, so... the tables are semi-accessible, while the food truck itself is less so. That said, payment is around counter-height, and they've brought the food out to me before so that I don't have to reach up to an impossibly high window, so you're not out of options if you come solo!

Enrique M.

Yelp
This dish was actually really good! As someone who is particular about birria, I can confidently say you should definitely try it. The crispiness of the taco then meats juiciness and the flavor of the sauces really elevate the experience. Pouring a little consomé on the taco will leave you mesmerized. I love it and will definitely make it my go-to choice! Let's not forget the quality of service, even if it's just a taco truck. The staff genuinely loves to check in on you and see if you need anything else, especially when it comes to the consomé. They notice when you're about to finish and politely ask if you'd like some more. They truly are very polite people who make you feel at home.

Yelp
Solid food truck! Convenient, as it was very close to the Costco parking lot. The service was friendly and fast. It has everything you'd expect from a great taco truck, plus the cooking feels a bit more gourmet than usual. Recommend!

Yelp
Hubby & I tried this place last week, everything was good. Although the big winner was my husband's alambre. Kind of like fajita mix- meat of your choice, grilled onions & peppers. Tacos were good, but nothing outstanding.

J M.

Yelp
Best burrito. No frills taco truck. Burrito super suadero. Excellent. Huge. Three meals. I'm not Hispanic. But these burritos were huge and deliver. You can pack up the lime slices and the mango salsa. Skip the over sweet horchata.

Yelp
Found this place on Yelp while searching for a late night taqueria spot. The reviews & pics looked good so I had to give it a try. This food truck is parked on the side of the OSH & has tables with seats around so you have the choice to hang out & eat there. The guy at the window was friendly & quickly took my order, our food was out in minutes. The quesabirias were flavorful & the consomé was tasty, paired perfectly. My boyfriend rated the burrito a 10/10 flavor all around. The only downfall of the burrito is that they don't wrap it tight enough & they only add one layer of foil so you have to make sure you're holding it right. I'll definitely be back, specially since we're late night munchers & this place is open till midnight
google avatar

Yelp
Food truck. Ok Mexican food. More beans and real cheese And pico de gaio, would Have been better on The nachos. Also the chips weren't the best quality. Convenient to drive to.
google avatar

Amanda D.

Yelp
Super solid. Lots of flavor, crunch, cheese was good, tender meat and consommé was rich.

Yelp
overall: 4/5 located in the costco/outdoor supply hardware parking lot, this had plenty of parking and quick service! came on a thursday night around 7pm and got our order within 15 mins! i got tacos (asada, lengua, cabeza, suadero)! overall 4.5 was really good, wish i got a couple more limes though. everything was pretty flavorful and what i crave from a taco place. only 2 notes i would have is that asada (i think) was a bit dry & the green sauce is a bit odd. i love me a good green sauce but this one was more cucumber-y? i'm not sure what it was but if they could fix it, i would literally come back every week
google avatar

Randy F.

Yelp
**3.5 Stars** Fantastic Al pastor tacos with a touch of pineapple. Tried the Quesobirria but a bit too crunchy for my liking with a thicker consommé. Credit cards accepted, but cash discount and limited outdoor seating.
google avatar

Jaclyn C.

Yelp
Amazing. Truck is located in front of OSH next to Costco with plenty of parking. We got 8 tacos - Al pastor, carne asada, and birria. We finished them all and had to get a couple more because they were that good. The tortillas were especially good and super delicious since it's slightly crispy on the edges and their sauce is spicyyyy and addicting. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Isabel M.

Yelp
SO GOOD! I've been searching for good Mexican food. All the other place highly rate so far have not been as good as expected. But this place definitely lived up to the reviews. Ordered the quesabirria and steak quesadilla (was craving some cheese!) and so good! The staff are very kind and gave us extra jalapeños and onions. Steak was the best between the two. Looking forward to trying the tacos soon!
google avatar

Dank G.

Yelp
3.5 stars (rounded down). Super Brisket Burrito $14 and change. I would eat here again, but you'll need to wait for why. First I would try a different protein. My expectations for the brisket was very different then the actual. The only way I knew it was brisket was for the crunchy bristly strands of meat. Yes, I used that adjective for this meat. Otherwise it didn't look or taste like anything I've ever tried before. Furthermore, the amount of protein was substandard. The wrap was on the loose side and not firm. Now for why I'd eat here again- I'm sure the other proteins are more tried and true. Size and weight were standard. BUT the flavors of everything else in that burrito was excellent.
google avatar

Daisy B.

Yelp
I got 3 tacos de al pastor. They give you a lot of meat and delicious grilled onions on the side with lemon. 10/10
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
What a hidden gem in Redwood City behind the Costco! I was craving Mexican food and my husband loves tacos so we decided to try it out. I got a chicken quesadilla and my husband got al pastor, carne asada, and pollo tacos. The chicken quesadilla was absolutely delicious, full of gooey, melty cheese that looked like and tasted like the cheese in quesabirria tacos. They were hefty pieces that were warm buttery and fresh. It came with a side of pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole. Their guac was more like a creamy green salsa but still super good and balanced out the creaminess of the cheese. Tacos were also amazing - my husband like the Al pastor the best. Flavorful, fresh, and full of spice. We'll definitely return!
google avatar

eric s.

Yelp
this was my second time ordering from here, and both times my burrito was hella rice with barely any meat. today i got a Super Burrito and it was like 70% rice. by the time i noticed, i was already halfway through. i even tipped thinking i was about to eat good. nah. not worth it.
google avatar

Yelp
Order: Al Pastor Tacos + Asada Torta Review: Honestly this is like 4th time we've been here. The al pastor is delicious. I like it best as a taco so you can appreciate the char, the bits of pineapple, and the grilled onions which make for many beautiful bites. I also enjoy the asada torta. The torta has just the right amount of layers that go so well with the bread and meat. Other Comments: 1. Parking: VERY easy parking in the lot 2. Service + Facilities: Everyone who helped us out has been SO nice and always made sure we had enough salsa :-). You need to order for here and eat at their outdoor table setup, don't let the foil moisten your meal 3. Recommendation: definitely recommend this to get your taco/torta fix
google avatar

Adria Q.

Yelp
Tacos al pastor rock! Right by the Costco in Redwood City. Tortillas were soft and flavorful. The Al pastor was tender. Served with sautéed onions and topped with a red and green salsa. Definitely will be back for more!
google avatar

Gisele T.

Yelp
Delicious tacos and kind workers! My favorite is the suadero, but cabeza is super tasty too. The salsas are flavorful and portion sizes are very generous. One of my favorite taco trucks in town!
google avatar

Hugo M.

Yelp
Came to this spot as an alternative and was very happy to have come here! Service was great and the food was even better!!!! Very good portion sizes and generous!! Will definitely be back!!!!
google avatar

Varinia B.

Yelp
The food is fantastic!! We each got something different and we were all very happy with our choices. Our son is moving to Hawaii and wanted good Mexican food before leaving!!All the meat was cooked to perfection. The gentleman taking the orders answered all of our questions and with a smile. Hard to fine nowadays. Then 2 other couples showed up that are "regulars". We will definitely be back!!
google avatar

Andrew J.

Yelp
Tasty street tacos is the way to go here. Very flavorful carne asada that is diced into the perfect size. No chewy meat pieces was a huge plus for me. I also got the super quesadilla with carne asada (8/10) and the super nachos with carne asada (7/10). Although the nachos used the same meat as the tacos, they were bland. But not bad! Quick, friendly service and they have outdoor seating. Check this place out!
google avatar

Veronica L.

Yelp
This review is due to the lack of flavor on the food. I tried it last week at off the grid in foster city. I paid around 60.00 dollars for two burritos and a quesadilla and let me tell you this was so bad that we threw the food away. It had no taste at all it was so bland. I got an email from them a week ago stating that they were going to refund my money and so far nothing was put back into my account. Oh well never again will I be giving this place a try.
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
Good, solid Mexican food available right between Costco and Outdoor Supply Hardware on Middlefield. I had the quesabirria tacos ($12 for 3 average size ones with consomé), a mulita, and a sope, which is a good sized meal. I ended up giving one of my quesabirrias away as it wasn't strictly necessary. Anyway, quesabirrias are good, exactly what you'd expect. I would prefer the consomé be in a wider and shallower container rather than a small coffee cup so it's easier to dip, but other than that there are no nits to pick. The mulita, which is like 2 cracker-crispy tortillas with cheese and meat in between, was also good. It does required a little sauce as it's a tad dry without it, so I used a judicious amount of the salsa verde they included. The sope was also nicely done. Not soggy at all, which some can be, a good size, plenty of meat, and nice chewy/crispy dough. Overall - legit spot to get some good Mexican food. I believe most things are made to order as it's not what I'd call fast. Pricing is actually very reasonable as well, although I need to see their super burrito to be completely confident in that. Parking could be tricky depending on time of day due to Costco/OSH sometimes filling up, but when I visited (Tuesday ~11:45 am) there were plenty of spots right next to the truck.
google avatar

Alex O.

Yelp
Great food, tacos were flavorful and enjoyably spicy. The papa lokas were great loved that they were baked potatoes and not fries they come with chips too. Very nice people who took my order very patient and happy to serve their food. Great parking options nearby and easy to get to.
google avatar

Lynnette N.

Yelp
Highly recommend their carne asada super burrito. Meat was juicy + well seasoned with the perfect ratio of cheese/rice/beans, and tortilla was nicely toasted. I forgot to ask for salsa but I'll definitely be back to try the other items on the menu.
google avatar

Neo Naomi T.

Yelp
When you eat their food (tacos, burritos, beans, nachos), you can taste that they're made with love. I love all their food, esp quesabirria tacos, nachos, and suedero burritos. I would come here daily if I lived nearby!
google avatar

Miranda M.

Yelp
Best food in the area is a food truck parked in the Costco parking lot. I got the Quesabirria and it was outstanding. It comes with a consommé that was so rich and flavorful - I think it was for dipping but I just wanted to drink the cup. Super friendly service. Definitely recommend when you want something comforting.

Natasha B.

Yelp
They never disappoint! Everything I have tried has been stupendous, especially their al pastor.

Yelp
Moved to Peninsula over 10 yrs ago from City. I have searched rather unsuccessfully to find authentic (choose ethnicity) for over a decade. This place is so special. I can easily place this spot as making the best burrito I have eaten in YEARS. Granted, a burrito in and of itself may not be considered "authentic' Mexican food but this outfit is so legit to me. Please don't expect globs of this or that. Expect harmony of ingredients and flavors at a reasonable price served by generous people who are proud of the quality of their product. I showed up at 830pm on a balmy Sunday evening, and there were patrons waiting at side tables for their orders. I felt transported. I felt like I was among a community of patrons who already knew where to get the real deal.
google avatar

Alton C.

Yelp
Al Pastor Galore! you're getting a smoky meaty flavor bomb packaged in a perfectly soft corn tortilla for $2.95. Tacos Al Pastor is definitely the highlight, well-spiced and has a healthy kick of heat. It's definitely not sweet like other al pastors I've enjoyed, which I'm oddly okay with and pleasantly surprised me. The smoky flavor they impart on the meat in the al pastor and suadero along with the tenderness of their lengua made me question myself why I had only ordered 4 tacos (2 al pastor, 1 lengua, and 1 suadero). Got a chance to chat it up with the owner Rudy, super friendly guy! "You're going to love our tacos" Rudy said. Rudy was right. Will be back for more meaty taco galore for sure! Location: Food truck found in the OSH parking lot (near Redwood City Costco).
google avatar

Brenner Q.

Yelp
The Al Pastor Tacos are very good, I'm trying all the taco trucks in the Palo Alto area and these guys are legit! The Carne Asada ones are super good, good spicy kick to it too! Had to finish it off with a Coke bottle! Friendly staff and just all around good food!
google avatar

Angie Y.

Yelp
It's rare to find a place that does everything right. Tacos - Al pastor and carne asada were on point. Fresh, simple, and seasoned right! Quesabirria - the best, out of this world, hands down must get. Perfect beef and cheese proportion, crispy shell, warm and tasty consommé. Nachos - generous portions, none of that soggy chip deal, had everything as it should. The people who run this food truck are extremely sincere. They'll check up on you and make sure you have everything you need. Best tacos I've had in the Bay Area (not an exaggeration). Hope they find amazing success in 2023!

Abhishek P.

Yelp
Amazing food and great service. Highly recommend the tacos, quesadillas, burritos and churros
google avatar

Sam T.

Yelp
Best burrito OF MY LIFE!!! I go here once a week on my way to my daughter's gymnastics class and get the Al Pastor Super Burrito. I've seriously never had a burrito this good. It's the perfect combo of meat, rice, cheese and a tiny bit spicy. Always served hot and enough to split or save for the next day. Their other food is also delicious and the prices are very reasonable. Can't recommend enough!!!
google avatar

Riley C.

Yelp
We love El Paisa! We regularly come by to get tacos and have also enjoyed the quesadillas and burritos. Good food and good service. I would recommend checking their Instagram, since they usually post their hours/location on their story!
google avatar

Ryan T.

Yelp
Came here after reading about it in the S.F. Chronicle's list of best burritos in the Bay Area. It didn't disappoint! I got a pork super burrito and it had a lot more flavor than your typical chipotle burrito. The size wasn't enormous but it was plenty for a single meal, and as far as Bay Area super burritos go the price was quite reasonable.
google avatar

Ashwin S.

Yelp
Located in the Costco parking lot. We were about to start our run and feeling peckish. Found this on Yelp and came by. They didn't have a vegetarian taco on the menu but the guy said he'd whip something together and it was quite delicious. Generous with the amount of filling in the taco. It was one of the best vegetarian tacos we had. Can't come wait to come back and try some of the other things on the menu!

Pedro V.

Yelp
Burrito was really undercooked. First time my burrito tortilla felt stiff not because of being toasted but because of not being toasted at all. Wait time was ok 10-15ish mins. But quality wise I would not eat again. Decent size for burrito but the tortilla wrap was ripped so my condiments spilled out. Service was okay. I had to eat from the spilled side first but tortilla was not toasted at all.
