The NYC TV & Takeout Guide

"TV Pairing:Insecure (HBO) “Insecure is a show about good people who tend to make bad decisions, mostly because they get a little horny or hangry or concerned about their career paths. We can all relate. I can, especially, because it takes place in LA where I’m from and, like its leading lady Issa, I also have a boundless appetite for Mexican food as well as an alter ego who gives herself mirror pep talks. Flaming margaritas and/or tacos make a cameo in just about every other episode, so order something from our Mexican Delivery Guide (I’d go with a combo plate from Taqueria El Patron), and queue up Insecure. Also, I’d be doing you dirty if I didn’t tell you that someone nice put all of the music from the show in this Spotify playlist. You’re going to want it.” -AS" - hannah albertine, nikko duren, arden shore, matt tervooren

Where To Eat In Prospect Lefferts Gardens

"El Patron is a casual Mexican restaurant about a block away from Prospect Park. It has two connected spaces with a ton of big tables for groups, as well as some sidewalk seating during the summer. We particularly like the al pastor tacos and the fact that the chips and salsa are free, but there’s a huge menu of burritos, fajitas, and house-special tacos as well." - bryan kim, matt tervooren

Where To Get Mexican Takeout & Delivery In NYC

"It’s possible the thing preventing you from ordering Mexican takeout is having to decide between tacos and enchiladas. When you order online from El Patron in PLG, you don’t have to choose a favorite. They have combos in the $15-20 range that involve both (as well as a full menu of burritos, fajitas, and margaritas to-go)." - hannah albertine

Taqueria El Patron Review - Prospect Lefferts Gardens - New York - The Infatuation

"El Patron is a Mexican restaurant right next to the park in Prospect Lefferts Gardens. It has two big connected spaces with a ton of big tables for groups, as well as some sidewalk seating during the summer. This place is really casual and good for kids, so come before or after spending time in the park, or if you need something easy in the neighborhood. They have a huge menu of burritos, fajitas, and house-special tacos, but we particularly like the al pastor tacos and the fact that the chips and salsa are free." - Hannah Albertine

Google
got the taquitos, azteca tacos with barbacoa , and el patron burrito. food was good but wasn’t outstanding. the taquitos were my favorite out of the three but the shell was a bit hard to chew. the burrito was MASSIVE and could feed 2 people easily. the tacos came with a green sauce which was amazing, but the tacos were wet? not really juicy, or saucy, just wet… we arrived near opening and there was only one person serving as host and server. this wasn’t an issue for us at all but our food did take a long time despite the restaurant not being too full

The food, drinks, and atmosphere are all ok. Cute little spot for a quick bite. Small but festive outdoor sitting area.

Total ripoff for mediocre food. They charged 9 dollars for basic chips and salsa and it was the tiniest serving of chips! Can’t help but think the owners are so greedy. And they obviously use store bought premade dressing for their “Cesar salad”. Tasted so artificially sweet and processed, absolutely not homemade dressing. The server was nice and that’s the only compliment I can give this place.

We come here for tacos all the time! My fav are shrimp and fish! Absolutely loooove them! Great value for $5! Always fresh and delicious!

I was very happy to take my work partners to this restaurant to get take out. When we arrive back to the office and took out the food. There was a LIVE roach 🪳 on my fish taco! I was so upset I just threw the food away. Luckily my job paid for it because I would have wanted my money back. This will be my last time eating from this restaurant. Honestly you guys should be reported! See picture below

This place is fantastic! I ordered the fish bowl, which was super crunchy and juicy, with black beans and pico de gallo – delicious! My husband had the El Patron burrito, and he loved it. We got two margaritas – one mango and one passion fruit. I preferred the mango; it was strong, smooth, and delicious without any aftertaste, unlike the passion fruit. The food was great, and the atmosphere was perfect, with awesome music. We had a great time!

Google
Always a good time and good food. Seating is a bit tight especially if they are busy, but the food is the real highlight. The drinks are fantastic as well, often needing just one to get you where you're trying to go! I do wish they turn up the heat a bit in the winter because it's uncomfortable to eat when it's chilly in the place you're trying to consume a mean at, but the food is so good you will stay and deal with it! **Update 6/11/25 The place is still amazing. The service is spectacular and the food is delicious. The price is right and the drinks are strong!!

Google
Had a great time here for bottomless brunch! Defintely a great place to go for weekend brunch with friends :) it's a bit of a dive bar so don't expect too much but the drinks were good. And the food was good for brunch I'd recommend over dinner which we've been a couple times too. Nothing crazy fancy but decent for sure 👌 bathrooms available which are in thr back. The music is the best part about this place it's bussing if you love reggaeton and latin music. Would defintely go back! They have some outdoor seating as well :) if you're looking for a solid Mexican spot this is it. My one feedback is it's a bit expensive especially for the smaller portion sizes :3

Yelp
The place is now called Taqueria Villa, the look is the same, the menu is a little changed. They have a few cute tables outside and large inside. The service was very attentive but we were one of the two tables on a Saturday night. The food was disappointing. I loved the homemade chips and salsa (free). I did not enjoy the burrito. The tortilla tasted and had the texture of a store bought one. The steak was low quality, overcooked, and chewy. The other person got the enchiladas and also did not enjoy her dish.

Yelp
Great margaritas and food! We came for a quick bite before seeing a show across the street at union hall. Staff were super friendly and their happy hour is Mon-Fri 3-7pm. They gave us complimentary chips and salsa. The passion fruit margarita was delicious, as was the al pastor mole enchilada. I chose to get some tajin on the rim of the margarita, but you could also choose sugar or salt. It reminded me of the Mexican lollipops covered in chili coating. This was very easy to get to by subway coming from Times Square, just a few blocks from the R line stop. Definitely recommend this spot if you're craving Mexican food near Union Hall!

Yelp
Grabbed lunch at Taqueria El Patron Mexican Grill on Sunday afternoon. It would not be a place I would dine-in, but it is a solid option for take-out. Quality: I was very happy with my take-out meal. The Guacamole was excellent, its flavor really focused on avocado. The El Patron Burrito was also very good. It has steak, rice, refried beans and is covered in an enchilada style sauce, which included chunks of pork. The one thing I felt it was missing from the burrito was sour cream, but overall very good. Quantity: Large portions, burritos are enough for two meals. Value: $14 for Fresh Guacamole & Chips. $18 for El Patron Burrito. Ambiance: Taqueria El Patron Mexican Grill is located in Park Slope. They have a small outdoor street structure in the front, and potentially more seating in the back. I ended up just sitting inside for a few minutes for my food. It is very casual, and strangely they kept the doors open on a cold day. Two televisions hung from the corner and the music selection blasting over the speakers was all over the place. Crowd: I was the only customer on Sunday afternoon. Service: Food was ready right on time. Parking: Limited street parking.

Yelp
Short answer, yes, I recommend this spot. Party of 3. The food was delicious. The place was clean. I did not like the fried chips and salsa that was brought to the table. Extremely oily for my taste. I ordered the spicy shrimp burrito, and wow, it was spicy!!!! You'll need some extra cream on the side, trust me. It was full of shrimps. Enjoyed it. My friend had the tortilla soup. She said it was super tasty and good. My other friend had the enchiladas en salsa verde, and they devoured their dish. 2 of us ordered margaritas, and they were great. The service was excellent. uggg like always, ate my food before taking a pic.

Yelp
Beautiful backyard. Great dessert. Exceptional service. Came here just for dessert on a Friday night and had a wonderful time. The backyard was gorgeous and the churros and flan were delicious. Service was incredibly friendly. Will definitely come back again to try dinner!

Yelp
Good quality Mexican food and nice staff. The space was clean inside, and they served chips and salsa on the house. The chips were cold but you can tell they're fresh. Everyone at the table enjoyed their food.

Yelp
Had a fantastic time here. Food was really tasty and the server was so nice to get us some different hot sauces to try on the side. The drink menu was varied- I had a margarita and my friend enjoyed a bulldog. At the end the server gave us a couple of complimentary tequila shots, which was really nice. Not sure why the place wasn't busier, but we'll definitely be back.

Yelp
The place is cute. Music is cute. Service could be more efficient, maybe they were changing shifts but we needed things the entire time. The $17 nachos we shared were all obviously burnt at the tips of the top layer yet the cheese was solid and the food was luke warm, the plate was hotter. We ate less than half and gave up even though we were initially starving. Beans and meat both lacked flavor. Hot sauce could be less watered down and more flavorful. Kinda regretted stopping in. The pineapple jarritos and the churro were the best part.

Yelp
What an unexpected treat! Margaritas are strong, food is delicious, and the service was great. Shout out to Otto for the great recommendations on the molé.

Yelp
This is a nice new spot in Park Slope with some great Mexican food! The menu is pretty large with a lot of different options to choose from. They had socially distanced indoor seating as well and some tented outdoor seating. The service was very good - we went on a rainy Wednesday night so it was slow, but the waiter was super friendly. We ordered the guacamole which was good, but a little bland. They do give you the option to order fresh guacamole (made to order) which you can choose to make it spicier. We didn't do this, but would definitely recommend if you like guac with a kick. I also ordered a fish taco and a ground beef taco, both delicious, as well as a burrito and the chicken quesadilla. The portions were great, wound up taking a bunch of food home. Since the place is new, they did not have their liquor license yet, so we couldn't try any of their cocktails. But I'll definitely return soon to try those out! There's a lot of Mexican food options in the area but this has been one of the best I've tried. Definitely check it out!

Yelp
I just had take-out from there. It was excellent. I think the fajitas are the best dish one can get at Mexican restaurants because of all the stuff it comes with - beans, rice, sour cream and guacamole - lettuce and tomatoes and usually like 5/6 tortillas. That's the standard at all places. Shrimp fajitas - LOVED IT!! I also had the taco supreme w grilled chicken. It was Awesome and big There is a ton left over because I over-ordered of course. But at least I'm no longer abusing opiates...

Yelp
I came here a month ago and had an amazing experience -- super attentive waiter, great burrito bowl, free shot of tequila with my bill, the works! Then I came tonight and had a terrible time. The margarita was good, but the waiter could not have cared less about me. I had to ask for napkins. I had to ask for water twice. I had to go find someone (not my waiter, he'd vanished) so I could order an entree. I had to ask for utensils. And when my entree came, it was mostly cold! Really disappointing experience for what turned out to be a $40 check. I'm not sure I will return.

Yelp
From outside you wouldn't expect much but walk inside and it's quite beautiful ! I was having such a rough day at work and Alex made sure to provide world class service . You have no idea how much that turned my day around . And the food was way better than I expected . The Birria quesadilla was Very juicy and flavorful . I 100% recommend this location . Thanks Alex ! You were the bomb !

Yelp
My friends and I walked by and heard great music so decided to walk-in to get a quick bite and drinks. The food was delicious and the service was great! We ordered carnita tacos and the park slope fries and it was delicious and a great order to pick at! The waiter Alex was super attentive too! Would totally recommend!

Yelp
I think this is the best Mexican food in the area, and there's a fair amount of competition. My go-to is the chicken enchiladas rojas, but everything I've had is delicious. Especially the chips! They also have a heated backyard. Don't miss out.

Yelp
Was here yesterday for cinco de mayo and it was an event! The vibes and atmosphere was there. Even with limited supply Eddie, our waiter was a class act. We got shots margarita, quesadillas, chips, burrito and wings twice. The music was great, the bathroom was clean and everyone was masked up and still socially distancing which I love. Eddie was the stand out though, thank you so much and I have to come back when I'm not driving cause them shots had my friends on TILT

Yelp
We just ordered take out from here and it was so good! We split the nachos (carnitas), I had the chicken mole enchiladas and fish taco (combo), and my partner had the carnitas mole enchiladas. Everything was delicious and the food was ready right on time (we did pick up). This is a great new addition to the area!

Yelp
Great drinks! Great Food! Great service! Found this gem walking in Park Slope - will be back.

Yelp
Got the the mushroom and corn/zucchini tacos. Best veggie tacos I ever had. Gets 5 out of 5 taco rating

Yelp
Amazing food and great staff. The Paloma is was on point and so was mango margarita. I recommend coming here!!

Peter W.

Yelp
The food was delicious, affordable and fast. Chips were nice and crispy but not oily. The Mole was perfect. The service was great.

Yelp
Has gone downhill very quickly. We've visited nearly weekly for the past six months or so - and have had five star experiences each time - but after about a three week hiatus, things have changed for the worse. Apparently, we're told by a server, there's been a management change. Portions were smaller, there were hidden upcharges, and complimentary chips and salsa were available only if you ask (and then beg). Dishes were less flavorful, and seemed hastily put together. This had been our go to for the last year or so, but I fear we will need to search for another.

Maggie J.

Yelp
We got a bunch of tacos for takeout. The tacos need better seasoning and flavor for the price. I know they are a new place so I'm willing to give it another go, but wanted to give them some feedback for improvements. I feel like there is a lot of competition for Mexican in the area so I hope they can figure it out!

Lisa K.

Yelp
I'm so happy this place opened. I've been a few times and the people are always super kind and helpful. The food is really good, but the rice and beans are AMAZING. Honestly debating just getting like 3 orders next time. Weirdly the sour cream also tastes way better than other places??? The carne asada is also great--tender and flavorful. Would recommend tacos aztecas over the regular tacos if you like smaller tacos. Tons of vegetarian options too which are genuinely good, not sad.

Joshua F.

Yelp
I've gotten dinner from here two times. One time I got a burrito and the other, enchiladas. I thought the food was absolutely delicious both times, and with very generous portions. It might be my favorite Mexican place and there is no shortage of options here in the neighborhood. Give them a try!

David D.

Yelp
Fantastic enchiladas, generous sides with all meals, and the crispiest chips. Plus, they have a heated backyard! Highly recommend!!

Alexa D.

Yelp
Food was great and there is a very spacious heated back patio! This restaurant just opened up, has been in business for about a week or so, so the service was a tad slow. But overall recommend trying this new place out!
