The 22 Best Tacos In Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"El Perrito in South Austin serves El Paso-style food, something of a rarity in Austin. Get the very good tacos ahogados, in which fried flautas—filled with shredded chicken or ground beef and potato—get doused in a spicy tomato-based chile sauce, sprinkled with cheese, and then topped with a salsa verde. The red chile sauce is so delicious you’ll want to drink it on its own. We’re also fans of their griddled, crispy tacos topped with shredded lettuce, tomato, and grated Muenster-style cheese. What to get: Tacos ahogados; Crispy taco" - nicolai mccrary, raphael brion

El Perrito Review - South Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"El Perrito is a trailer in South Austin serving El Paso-style tacos, something of a rarity in Austin. Get the very good tacos ahogados (aka drowned tacos), in which fried flautas—filled with shredded chicken or ground chuck and potato—get doused in a spicy tomato-based chile sauce, sprinkled with cheese, and then topped with a salsa verde. The red chile sauce is so good you’ll want to drink it on its own. We’re also fans of their crispy tacos topped with shredded lettuce, tomato, and grated Muenster-style cheese. Keep an eye out for their brick and mortar, opening soon. " - Raphael Brion

Google
I am a little biased, this food is from EPT. Growing up in El Paso, my folks would take me once a month to Chicos Tacos. El Perrito has brought a little bit of home to the ATX. The food is good almost as I remember it, but argue probably better. Yeah I will get hell about that comment. I remember the owner working his ass off in the Austin summer in a food truck. I am happy to see him have his own place. My favorite is the double order and then I drown it in the green sauce. El Chuco hotdog is something to try just tell them to take it easy on the mayo or maybe not put on at all. Definitely recommend if you are looking for something different and southwest.

Google
Tried out El Perrito with my wife and a friend, and honestly, it was a fun and tasty surprise—especially for a hot dog spot inside a Mexican joint. We ordered the loaded fries and loaded nachos to start things off, and both came out looking like total crowd-pleasers. Flavor-wise, they hit the spot—cheesy, spicy, and fully loaded. The only knock for me was that they got soggy pretty quickly, which made them tough to enjoy by the end. Now, onto the hot dogs—which are the real draw here. I went with the Dogstin and so did my buddy, while my wife had the Chuco Chili Dog. All of them had a unique twist—definitely not your standard ballpark dogs. The buns were soft, toppings were creative, and the balance of flavor and heat was solid. Also worth mentioning: this place is super friendly on the wallet. You get a full, flavorful meal without breaking the bank. Service was quick, and the vibe was laid-back—great for a casual bite with friends. Would come back, but maybe skip the fries and nachos unless they find a way to keep them crisp. Still, a cool little spot doing something different, and doing it well.

Google
Austin mexican food is often lacking compared to its neighbor San Antonio, but El Perrito was top-notch. They are El Paso style mexican food, cool atmosphere, great food. We had the carne asada fries and quesadillas. Decent prices, will definitely come again.

Google
Hot Dog is Not 100% beef as advertised. Is was lg bacon made the pork Hot dog saltier. I did enjoy my Queso would have liked it more if it was warmer Temp wise!! House Margarita was ok!! Would go back to try another dish and have another drink. I’ll pass on the hot dog tho…

Julia Cabral

Google
Being from El Paso I had high expectations... I will say this place is BETTER than Chico's. I drove from San Antonio just to try it and I will DEFINITELY be back. Kayla was very nice. Great drinks, atmosphere and the price is reasonable.

Lorraine Ortega

Google
You can the girl out of Chuco…but she’ll still crave El Paso grub. My sister and I loved the food and the red beer slaps! Dog friendly patio too.

Google
Food was so good we have been here a few times and food hits the spot every time for us!! We always had eyeballed this place when it was just the food trailer but when they opened to doors and moved into the building we tried and will definitely will be returning. The only thing for me was I have ordered the Dogstin 3 times in a row and YES it was good each time but they were made differently each time. Not sure if it was different cooks or what not but my bread was different the first time then the last two times and this third time the dog was a lot smaller than the first two times. Other than that no complaints. Food was bomb!!!

Google
We went during lunch. It's a nice place and very clean. Customer service was awesome. I went for the OG. So much flavor and it was worth 10 dollars. I couldn't finish it we saved it for later and it still hit the spot. They have a full menu and drinks. We also got the goritas and it was so good. Go try them out you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
This is exactly what I've been looking for a way to satisfy my El Paso cravings! The rolled tacos in sauce were absolute perfection, and the crinkle-cut fries were delicious and a very generous amount. The horchata was a sweet, homemade surprise that tied everything together. The restaurant has a cozy, easy setup where you order at the counter, and they bring the food to your table no long waits for a server. The space is kept clean, with great music and a couple of TV screens adding to the place. My only complaint, but is it even a complaint! I just wish they weren't so far south! But every time I'm in the area, this will definitely be a must-stop.

Yelp
I wondered what "El Paso" style was and how it differed from Tex-Mex. I was pleasantly surprised and super happy with my meal. My friend and I came for lunch one day and split an order of the ELP Tacos, Chicken Flautas, Deshebrada Fiesta Nachos, and the Dogstin hot dog. Good lord was that a lot of food... I really liked the flavor and heat level of the ELP tacos. I know some might not enjoy the sauciness of them, but I really liked it. The chicken flautas were nice and crispy with lots of fun toppings like cheese and green sauce. The nachos were a cheesy, hangover killing gut bomb with really nicely cooked meat on top. Finally, I think the Dogstin was my favorite. It is a huge hot dog wrapped in bacon and topped with lots of tasty stuff. I would 100% get the hot dog again. Last but not least, we each had a pineapple agua fresca which is made fresh in house. I was honestly upset that I didn't get the large because it was SOOOOO GOOD. I look forward to coming back to El Perrito and trying more things (and drinking more agua fresca).

Yelp
Saw this place come up in my IG feed and immediately knew I had to surprise my significant other with a taste of his hometown comfort food. I rarely ever venture south or to this area of town, but the drive was well worth it. The food was simple, but delicious. Definitely worth the drive and the calories.

Yelp
Great service all the time! Food brings me back home every time! My husband and I always come eat here when we miss El Paso
google avatar

Tracy C.

Yelp
My first time eating El Paso style tacos. Tasty and definitely different than any tacos I've ever eaten in Austin. Everything is made fresh and they even make their own taco shells. This establishment grew from a food truck to where they are now in a brick and mortar and it's understandable why it's survived.

Yelp
This place is so delicious! I ordered the ELP Tacos and the ELP fries and everything lived up to my expectation! I also ordered the Red Beer (My first time having one) and it was so GOOD! I paired it with the Beer SOL. I normally drink Micheladas and the taste was very comparable. I would recommend this place to anyone especially if you are from EL Paso. The customer service was great! It was my first time here and everyone was welcoming, kind and helpful when I was ordering. I went on a Sunday evening and there was no line the food came out very quickly. I will be going back again especially when I have family come in from Out of Town.

Yelp
El Perrito is a top 5 restaurant for me and family! The hot dogs here are some of the best in the city. All the topping always complement each other well and the hot dog link itself tastes high quality and is full of flavor. The food always comes out pretty fast and the cashier is helpful too. Every time we go there's always a new drink or special menu item for the day so it's nice that there is usually something different for us to try out.

Yelp
Tonight I got a West Texas Mexican food fix! The restaurant is in the corner of a strip mall. The vibe is hole in the wall and the food is delicious. I ordered at the counter but I think there's table service too. Here's what we had: Chuco combo #2: They're flautas drowning in red sauce and cheese. You from ELP? They're like Chico's but not exactly. Delicioso! Carne asada tacos: good flavor, topped with an avocado slice. Green Chile on the side with a lime . Perfecto! Gordita- This isn't on the menu. Follow them on IG to find out when they have them. This is top 3 I've ever had in my life! The breading is soft yet crunchy and somewhat sweet. You must try it! I'll be coming back for more. Trust me.

Yelp
Love this spot! Great tacos and hot dogs authentic to The international cities of El Paso and Juarez. I love the cuisine of Chihuahua. They nail it and proud of them for creating such a friendly brick and mortar!
google avatar

Yelp
Damn! I saw this place on Instagram being reviewed by Doug Davidson... drove south to get that OG hot dog... it was good
google avatar

Loony Loco L.

Yelp
This place is the bomb. I was teleported back to El Paso. The tacos actually taste better than the ones in El Paso from you know who. The hotdogs were also great. I had the bacon wrap hotdog. Anyone from El Paso will truly enjoy this dining experience. Make sure you bring your green card. Ha ha ha just kidding.

Yelp
My coworkers and I decided to check out this place for lunch after my father-in-law recommended it. Wanting to explore something different, I tried it in advance and thought the crew would enjoy a change from our usual lunch spots. I went for their Tuesday special, six rolled tacos with their sauce. Though it may not seem like much, the mita mita combo (half chicken, half beef) was delicious with a delightful level of spiciness. I also indulged in their OG hotdog, which was excellent, though I could only manage half due to the satisfying tacos. The establishment has transitioned from a food truck to an indoor location, which is impressive to witness. Having been to El Paso, TX, I can say this place rivals the famous Chicos Tacos. It's refreshing to see such a unique culinary experience making its mark in central Texas. The staff was friendly and efficient, and we were in and out within 30 minutes.

Yelp
El Perrito was everything I needed. Like many of the other folks reviewing this place, I too am from El Paso and this place transports me to home. I got a combo of the brisket tacos and fries. The consommé was the perfect compliment to the verde salsa and grated cheese on top. The fries were the perfect crinkle fries, but you have to eat them quickly because they can get soggy. Everyone in the restaurant was friendly and the service was great.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome crispy tacos. One of my go to spots in South Austin. The tacos are served with a warm green salsa that is to die for. The shells are crunchy corn and made to order. Super tasty lunch or anytime m.

Yelp
It was a drizzly Sunday afternoon and I had a sudden craving for a hot dog. I didn't feel like driving up to Rainey or downtown, so I did a quick search and found El Perrito wasn't too far south of me, so I took a chance on a spot I'd never been to and won. First of all, this is a trailer in a shopping plaza off of Stassney. You're not to expect the finest hot dog to grace your face. This spot is just no-frills tasty street food. I will say it checks all the boxes for satisfaction, comfort food, and creativity, though, as these aren't your standard toppings. When I walked up, I saw three full picnic tables even an hour or so past the standard lunchtime rush. I brought my dog since it was an outdoor dining situation, but when I ordered my food, the lady taking my order said there were also tables inside if I wanted. Unsure if she saw my small pup from the window, though, so it's best to keep to the outdoor space just in case. I decided to go with the O.G. since it felt like a featured menu item. Can't go wrong with a bacon-wrapped dog with frijoles, grilled onions and chiles, and three kinds of cheese, right? I didn't wait very long before someone brought my order to me at the table. It came with a knife and fork, but I decided to be risky and just consume it hand-held. The bun had a golden toast to add some structural stability to the pyramid of toppings. It was clear it was made to order as it was hot, but not scorching. I'm also glad I came alone as I didn't need to converse with anyone and just focus on savoring this parcel of joy. If you're a true hot dog lover, come give El Perrito ATX a try. It was fun stepping out of the conventional confines of toppings and also supporting a local business.

Yelp
El Paso style Mexican food!!! Friendly staff, great classic El Paso options that reminds me of home. The El Paso/Juarez border area has some unique dishes that may show up on menus by name only. El Perrito has the name, the look and the flavor nailed down for a little bit of home for those of us from the 915 here in Austin. The rolled tacos are an acquired taste, I will absolutely agree with that when bringing friends here, however, the crispy tacos, flautas, gorditas and other dishes are for everybody. Catch menudo on the weekends and some border style burritos on some days. Truck is chill, building with seating should be opening soon.

Yelp
A hole in the wall taquito shop with outstanding service and savory food and drinks! Originally from El Paso and new to Austin I've been missing home. Somehow I stumbled across this place. And let me tell you it's like a little piece of El Paso. I am reminded of home from the mural on the wall to the food served. Please come out to El Perrito whether you're from EP or not this is a place worth eating at.

Shelby T.

Yelp
Was expecting a lot better since this place is so hyped and I'm from El Paso so I was expecting El Paso style food. I was utterly disappointed. There was hardly any meat in the flautas, they were pencil thin. So just basically rolled fried tortilla. No flavor. No worse feeling than wasting money on food that's not good.
google avatar

Sarah H.

Yelp
Native El Pasoan here. This place is great!! Especially for the days I'm craving a hometown favorite.
google avatar

Nate K.

Yelp
Updating bc we have patronized this establishment multiple times now and it does NOT miss. We were excited to find they have clearly repaired/replaced the AC unit in the business... went to grab food to go and were pleasantly surprised at how cool it was inside, music going, staff smiling... and damn, that food is just SO GOOD. Now, if you don't like legit, somewhat (by design) greasy el Paso Tex-Mex, go to Matt's with all the other basics... this spot is for the real ones. Can't wait for patio weather! Congrats to the owners... SOLID addition to South Austin. Had the OG hotdog last night and it blew my mind :D 10/10 will continue to go back (until my arteries are clogged and doc says no more).

Julie H.

Yelp
This place was recommended by a friend of the family as we lived in El Paso for years but now live in Austin. Went for the ELP tacos and ELP fries. The green sauce is different from traditional El Paso Chico tacos but had good flavors. The margaritas were good too.
google avatar

Ashley W.

Yelp
El Perrito is our FAVORITE spot! We go once or twice a week. Ivan, the owner, does a great job making you feel welcome and the food is absolutely AMAZING! Chill spot, easy for any size group. Everything on the menu is a must try! You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Courtney B.

Yelp
The only answer is YES, yes to going, yes to trying all the things on the menu, yes. Shoutout to 512AustinBites for showcasing this place on Instagram recently and bringing it to my attention. I saw it at night and immediately went to try it out for lunch! My plus one and I got the carne asada fries, the dogstin, the OG, and the Gorditas. The gorditas are not in the menu, you have to ask if they have them available that day. We got lucky and I was so happy we could try them. I will definitely be coming back to try more things as everything looks great. Super great owner! Worth the drive from wherever you reside!

Christopher D.

Yelp
Very cheap food, prettu solid. Come for the margs, stay for the drenched tacos. I have to try the hot dogs
google avatar

Miky D.

Yelp
Came here for the hot dogs and decided to get the enchiladas and OMG!!! They were the best enchiladas I've ever had and yes I know because i prepare them the same way, with dried chiles and asadero cheese, you have to try them!!! I will definitely be going back!
google avatar

Mattie D.

Yelp
Went back again now that they have a brick and mortar location. The menu changed and has so many delicious options and specials. The space is chill and I love that you can order via QR code. Got the Gordita special, carne asada nachos and quesadillas. Everything was delicious. Service is fast and super friendly. Prices are affordable. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite spots in south Austin.

Yelp
Ehhh. I think I'm one and done with this place. It was underwhelming and did not come close to meeting the hype or expectations. In my case, the pictures look better than the experience or the quality of the food. So it was not as good as it looked. On this visit - they were out of chicken, and to be fair to them I think I need to try their chicken. So we got the beef instead, and I must say their beef had a weird taste to it, somewhat of a swine-effect, it did not taste fresh. The sauces looked good but bland and lacked flavor and spice to be honest. The fries were nothing special, so I don't understand what some of these reviews are claiming about how awesome the fries are - they weren't a big deal. If you look at past pictures - they are reducing portions. They put half the cheese on as compared to what they used to do - why? Did cheese prices jump 50%? Oh - the Hot dog was not good. Mine was cold and not worth $10. No way. The bun was stale. It did not taste that good. I get a great quality beef hotdog - bigger BTW - at Costco for $1.50. And here you pay $10 and they put a bunch of stuff on it but it was not good at all. You just don't serve stale product or food that's past it's expiration. They do not list any prices on the menu. That is not good, and that's a red flag. That just means they can change it anytime they want and there is no way to track that. They will raise it whenever and however they want to. I'm wanting to try the chicken, but overall this place was so lackluster I may skip them. If this is El Paso cuisine, then I'm either passing through instead of stopping in for a visit - or - their quality doesn't accurately represent the Real McCoy. FYI - - just by the owner's comments below the review - I think they helped me make my future decision. Instead of taking the feedback and wanting to make it better, they'd rather put the customer down and tell us not come back. LOL! I'm happy to take my business elsewhere - especially to those who deserve and appreciate it. Just pass on these guys, folks.
google avatar

Erin G.

Yelp
We were disappointed after reading reviews. The crispy tacos were decent but kind of one note. The taquitos were better but everything sort of overpriced for portions. Took a while and odd ambience.
google avatar

Edward K.

Yelp
one and done carne asada fries good but soggy maybe thats el paso style but not my favorite hot dog wiener is super salty?! i didn't even eat it
google avatar

Daryl O.

Yelp
This place is a bucket list must! El Paso style drowned tacos were amazing. It's kind of like a salsa broth with thick flautas sunk into the bottom with tons of finely shredded Colby jack cheese and a verde drizzle on top. The crispy corny tortillas hold their crunch from the bottom of the pool. I prefer letting them set for a couple of minutes before eating them and ladle the salsa over the cheese to let it get a little more melty. The thick corn tortillas will soften a little but still are super crunchy and now they've absorbed some the that drinkable salsa. Do it. You know you want to. They also have a/c indoor seating!!!

Jerry A.

Yelp
This place is wicked!! Better than any freaking dog place!! God the bacon wrapped dogs are like crack! They are so damn delicious! Messy but amazing! I literally could eat this food daily! The staff are so friendly and caring! I know the owner and he is prob like the best dude in the world! If you are in the area you better stop!! This dogs are better than drugs

Christi S.

Yelp
Just the kind of place I like. Nothing fancy but good food. I love El Paso style rolled tacos. El Perrito is an elevated El Paso style!
google avatar

Allen G.

Yelp
Ok, I've been WAYYY too disclosive on this platform about my abiding love for El Paso style Mexican Food... Austin has had a couple of food trucks that sufficed... but no brick and mortar... that looks to change as one of the truck greats, El Perrito, is transitioning to B&M where it's food truck is located on Stassney. Gotta say I love the red cheese enchiladas, the El Paso "drowned" tacos... "Chico's style" for the litigiously minded. But best is the El Paso style crispy hand fried tacos... you're gonna like El Perrito, and you are REALLY GONNA LIKE the air conditioned dining space already there!
google avatar

Mikey L.

Yelp
Amazingly delicious. Got the drowned tacos and chili cheese dog. So freggin' tasty. Guy behind the counter was super nice as well. Can't wait to try more. Interior is cool as well.
google avatar

Janet M.

Yelp
Food here is delicious. It will not disappoint. Talk about authentic to it's El Paso, Texas roots. I highly recommend it.
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
Tried the set of hard tacos (brisket). Fresh fried, which was nice. Thought they were pretty good, but not great. Fair amount of brisket. Coming back to try the drunken tacos though and will regrade then.
google avatar

Valerie T.

Yelp
If you're missing El Paso, come to el perrito! Taste just like chicos tacos. The flauta was delicious. I need to come try their other items.
google avatar

Danny M.

Yelp
First time here and it was a good experience. Environment: Currently, this is a food truck that is parked in front of a soon to be restaurant. There is a couple of tables outside/in front of the food truck, some inside seating, and bathrooms in the new soon to be restaurant. Food: The food here is good and adds a healthier/more fresh taste to a lot of the traditional foods from El Paso, Texas. I personally haven't ate this type of food since I was around 18 years old, so it was a good experience to taste these flavors again. Drinks: There is no alcoholic drinks here but there is waters and sodas. There is plans to later server alcohol once the main restaurant is completed. Staff: The staff here is friendly and the owner Ivan is a super cool guy.

Lexy D.

Yelp
Food was SO good and reasonably priced. Definitely wasn't expecting it to be this good. The hot dog was CRAZY (in a good way). The asada fries were huge too! Lots of food for a good price

Jessika D.

Yelp
So so good. Was just like home (chicos). Definitely will return. We got a single and the loaded carne asada fries. Fries were good but next time definitely coming for a double.
google avatar

Sean D.

Yelp
How have I not left a review yet?! El Perrito is always amazing. Ivan, the owner, is amazing. The food is amazing. This born and bred El Pasoan is a huge fan - I just wish I lived closer.
google avatar

Kelly C.

Yelp
This was our first stop on our Sonoran hotdog crawl. They did not disappoint. My partner had the Dogdtin, a great dog with just the right amount of heat and a fantastic taste. I opted for the chicken flautas, which were the best I've ever had. Good bye Taco Cabana...never again. They were topped with a little bit of everything....and oh so good. On to the next stop.....
google avatar

Lauren R.

Yelp
We randomly decided to stop by here for a small dinner yesterday since we were in the area and I'm so happy we did! We shared the chicken flautas and they were delicious. The service was super friendly and fast, and the outdoor seating vibes were great, also have indoor seating too. We will be back!
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Exceptional first ( of many turns out) visit. Great customer service - like literally with a smile in the middle of the heat ! The salsa on the drowned tacos is perfect. It is authentic- and that's hard to achieve. There are a lot of flavors in any one bite but they compliment each other perfectly. The taquitos themselves are super crispy which is great to hold up in the salsas. The legit flavor of the picadillo can still be tasted in the midst of all the gooey goodness. **Expect to wait a little while for your order ( it's all made to order)--so please be *patient* :)
google avatar

JJ P.

Yelp
Just had a double order of The EP tacos and wow they are so good. I'm from El Paso and I'm familiar with how these are made but but this place has championed it. Recommend you try that with the green sauce on it you'll start off reserving yourself with it by the end you're just dumping all of it and licking the container of that green sauce. So good!

Ketan P.

Yelp
Great service from the get go. Food was delicious. Good margs. I think it's a great value establishment. Go try it!
google avatar

Mar W.

Yelp
OMG! Back in 915 area code! Had a couple orders of the tacos ahogadas in red sauce & a order of beef brisket flautas. Very satisfying, yum yum

Bigg C.

Yelp
Every time I hit Austin I make sure and stop here! a taste of Chuco Towne with out the long drive . be sure and give them a try they are all the way legit! you will not be let down at all, plus those guys are bien firme.

Kev G.

Yelp
Only reason I gave it 3 stars was bc of the service. The food isn't good. The rolled tacos were SO hard I almost broke my teeth. The meat was dry too. The green sauce was bitter and spicy and kind of flavorless. Overall a waste of money.
