El Potro Mexican Grill

The food was delicious, but we were surprised there were no refills on fountain drinks. Our server noticed our confusion when we asked for a refill and was kind enough to top it off for us anyway.

The only reason I rated a 3 star for food is because my husbands plate had a serving as if it was a kid meal and the taste was ok not great. People and atmosphere was phenomenal just not the food also the bill ended up at $106.00 wasnt expecting it to be that high.

The waitress was nice and the atmosphere was good. Plenty of tv’s for sports and a nice bar. They also were able to accommodate our large group with no reservations. The downsides start with the service. While she was nice it took until the end of the meal for her to clear out dirty dishes. This includes appetizer plates. The biggest issue I had was my food. I had the pollo en mole. While the sauce was good, the chicken was a basic dry cutlet. I also had a spicy margarita which was not very good. The final thing that was a little stingy of them was their basic fountain soda refills were not free.

Excellent find, was convenient to the hotel and weather not great so walked across the street and ate here three nights. Super service and fresh ingredients I especially enjoyed the traditional taco salad with had plentiful chicken and satisfying toppings plus went the extra mile with fresh veggie garnish around the outside of the bowl, very good. Both non bar and bar booths were nice, clean, well ventilated and well kept, the music was lively and a little louder in the bar area.

The food was very good. The ingredients from the salsa to the meal were very fresh tasting. I had the shrimp burrito. They don’t use popcorn shrimp! The portions were more than adequate! The service was fantastic and the restaurant was spotlessly clean. Very relaxing atmosphere. Very walkable from the Hampton Inn. Definitely a must visit.

I am staying across the street at a hotel and they recommended this restaurant. You never know what you’re gonna get when it comes to a Mexican restaurant.. this place is privately owned and was ex! Freshly made margarita with no mix and all their food and sauces are homemade. If you were in the area, I would highly recommend.. they have an extremely large bar plenty of table seating if you do not want to sit around the bar with TVs.

Service was fast and ribeye was delicious! Drinks were made fresh!

Restaurant has ample parking. Service was good and food came out quickly. Tried the verde enchiladas which were excellent! If you're vegetarian get black beans instead of the refried beans.

El Potro was such a pleasant surprise. It is the classic Mexican restaurant that we've been looking for. The chips and salsa were perfect and the guacamole was fresh. We had the pork tacos and an enchilada and they were both big delicious portions. The churros were filled with dule de leche and these were some of the best churros I've ever had. The service was pretty good and the food came out quickly. We will be coming back again and again.

Can't beat the convenience- directly across from our hotel. Following a long travel day, my husband and I were ready for a drink and a good meal. Festive family restaurant atmosphere- bright and colorful. Good service. My margarita was unremarkable- and for $14.95 I should be blown away. My marg cost more than my food (tortilla soup and tamale off the app menu). It was watery and lacked great flavor. I enjoyed the tortilla soup most. The tamale was good. Both items + chips/salsa made for a filling meal. My husband thought his enchilada trio was good, typical Mexican fare. I think diners will get a decent meal here and it's worth the stop after a long travel day, but I wish the marg had been better. After 10 hours of travel that was the thing I was most looking forward to!

Stopped in for a few drinks & apps. Sat at the bar. Wasn't crowded at all. Bartender started out fine but was MIA often. Chicken quesadilla was very good as was the Sangria. My hubby got a margarita & he wasn't a fan.

11-23-22 Staying at the Double Tree in Chelsea for the 3 rd time in a month, we've eaten in the hotel's limited restaurant, ordered Chinese takeout but finally we walked a couple blocks and found this delightful Mexican eatery. The booths and individual chairs are colorfully painted. There's a happy vibe going on with silver intricately carved lighting above the booths plus happily hung banners hanging across the room, Hubs had Combo #3 and I had the Tres Compadres fajitas with steak, shrimp and chicken perfectly seasoned and marinated. I tried one flour tortilla with the chicken but decided to enjoy the flavors more directly. We had seconds of the fresh chips and salsa. The horchata was cold, refreshing with hints of cinnamon teasing my tastebuds. The best for last? Their fried ice cream is decadent like no other. I'd add this to my last meal on earth on Yelp. I told hubs I'd come back here two nights in a row since today is Thanksgiving. Before we left hubs asked and sadly for us they will be closed today. I'm glad we decided to venture out of our hotel. This place was great you know why? Hubs who always declines my suggestions for Mexican food finished his plate clean and said he liked it.

The service was excellent. I was debating between the spinach enchiladas or tacos al carbon. The bartender told me to get the spinach enchiladas, and if I was still hungry, he would have one taco al carbon made for me. This was awesome because the spinach enchiladas were on point and reminded me of a Tex-Mex in Houston called Jalapeños on Kirby, which no longer exist.

wow! The Corn tortilla tacos AMAZING!!!!!! The meat so ful of flavor. I go to Mexican restaurants all the time. You need to try this place. The sauce that comes with the tacos is soooooo gooooood

The restaurant is beautiful, but they need to improve the costumer service, we came to have some drinks and food at night. And the food show up first then the drinks, the waiter never come to check on the food or the drinks, one of the drinks that we had was strong so we wanted to add something else to make it sweeter and we didn't find our waiter so we had to call another waitress . we ended up no drinking the drinks because no one came to check on us and they charged us for the drinks that we didn't drink, we ask for the manager and he wasn't really helpful but came with an attitude and rudeness.

Cute restaurant inside, great drink list. It's located inside of a shopping plaza but nice ambiance, good service and good food.

Service slow as molasses, food average, alcohol- bartender needs to go back to Bartending school. If you are looking for a place to sit around eating chips and salsa, drinking bad drinks with your friends or family be my guest but I do not recommend this place if good service and quality matter to you.

Food and drinks were delicious. They have a great list of tequila selection. Service was quick and attentive. There was also a lot of seating around the bar - good for watching sports or a fight.

I was traveling for work and came across this restaurant because it is across the street from my hotel. So happy I found it! Really great food and great staff! It's been a while since I experienced a restaurant that seemed to have enough staff - and this place does! Service was great. Shrimp tacos were tasty. So nice when traveling to find a good restaurant - definitely glad I found this one!

The music was so loud I'm surprised our waitress could even hear us to take our orders. We could barely hear each other at dinner. The food is good - but as someone who is from Arizona - this is your typical overpriced/gouged Mexican food. A chicken burrito should not be $23... or two steak tacos $20 On top of it we ordered x2 house margaritas and x2 ultimate (this one has orange juice and "don julio") margs and they over charged us by x3 ultimate - I didn't bother saying anything because the card had already been charged -but the inconsistency and taking more money they should have is yet another reason I will not attend another el potro.

I loved the food. I was super surprised by the low rating on yelp, but i decided to go and check it out anyways with my partner. It was delicious, and i would 100% recommend it. The ambiance was cute, and it was a relaxing place to eat. The service was a tiny bit slow/we wish they checked up on us a little bit more, but regardless, it was a delicious and pleasant meal. The servers were nice and polite

Stopped in at lunchtime... good setting .. great bar set up Had a couple of draft beers. (($7.50 each)..fair enough Struggled with the menu offerings and prices. Not sure I can go for almost $20 burritos Even"cheese" nachos are about$15.00 Wish them all the best. Plan to checkout more local Chelsea restaurants, perhaps they cater to a more modest budget.

Flying out of BOS spending the night in a hotel walking distance from this place. Its Sunday so not all restaurants are open. We had the vegetarian burrito & combo #2. The combo was a pork enchilada verde, chicken chili relleno, rice & beans. I also had premium margarita. Portions were big. I'll say I didn't care for the rice but liked the refried beans. My relleno was soupy and not the typically batter fried you might expect, I didn't mind the departure. The enchilada was dry. Overall the spicies were subdued. Service was fast and friendly. The ok margi took away the worries of the day.

Visited this spot for a late night dinner on a weekend trip to Boston. The food was great and tasted authentic, but the service could have been better... however, the manager did come to our table to personally check on us, which was nice. The margaritas are strong, and we enjoyed the Mariachi band's live music!

Wow!! From Arizona so was skeptical about Mexican food in Boston. These folks nail it. Excellent food, service and atmosphere! The shrimp enchiladas are amazing. Some of the best mole I have had in a while and the fajitas are excellent. Would recommend this to anyone in or from out of town.

Honestly this restaurant does not offer authentic Mexican food but is it good food yes it is! I live in Los Angeles so for me to find authentic mexican food...it's not that hard. I'm not familiar with how much authentic mexican food you can find in Boston, but like I said it was decent. I had the mojarra frita and it was just okay not the best. Our waitress was super sweet and generous with us, wish I got her name! Anyway, the place has great decor and is really clean. My coworkers loved the guacamole and their food. If I'm out in Boston again I'll give this place another chance and try a different plate.

The quality of the food and service are world class. The wait staff is quick, friendly but not obsequious.

A+ on the portion size. The Salsa is amazing, taste fresh, has a small kick and a smoother texture than most - very very good. Food delicious. Everything we had was great, atmosphere was pleasant so were the staff. We had too much food and got our leftovers to go. I boxed up some of the extra chips we didn't finished and asked our waitress for if possible to get a container for the salsa and she brings me back like an 8oz container filled with salsa--that was the moment this place won my heart The drinks were spot on too, not watered down, you can taste the alchy and not be overpowered by just the alcohol taste. It's a very popular place even late at night! Highly recommend. It's my new go to spot for Mexican food.

This place was recommended to me by Yelp and by a friend, but it really only should rate 2.5 stars, I just leveled it up. Up. The room is nice, colorful, somewhat authentic, in the bathroom is extremely clean. I sat at the bar and had the fajita salad and it was mediocre to boring. They have options of beef or chicken, but I got just vegetarian. The type that you dip in sour cream at a party so they didn't cook really well, they were almost raw. Marks but it wasn't fully booked, and they weren't enough onions. Maybe two or three. They put a red sauce on top but not much of it, and basically the sour cream and cheese were what made this tolerable. Tolerable. There were no beans in the preparation which that would have made all the difference in the world for a vegetarian. Looking for a little protein. I will say that the presentation was nice. It looked nice but it didn't have enough spices in the fajitas so they were kind of just straight up lightly grilled and that was it.

Food is always dry and bland, given the place a few chances, the only good thing is the margaritas.

I hardly ever review restaurants and generally only when they are good. Was craving a taco salad so stopped in here when passing by. How does a Mexican Restaurant screw up a taco salad? Boiled unseasoned chicken over lettuce with a dab of sour cream. Tasteless and so lacking everything that is a good taco salad - no tomatoes, onions, avacado or guac and zero spice. I don't know how the other food is on this menu but stay clear of the taco salad or prepare to be disappointed. Chips and salsa (free) we're barely worth their cost. Service fair. Ok - rant over. Back to East Boston where they know how to make a taco salad!

Flew in to attend my fiancé's graduation. Came in very late, this restaurant location was open until 1! Lucky us. Food was super! Love Mexican food (from CA), so surprised how good this one was in Boston area!! Tip: queso is the bomb!

Excellent food and drinks! This is what traditional Mexican tastes like!!! I have been searching for a great Mexican cuisine in Boston and I finally found it, thanks to my husband. We came here for my bday dinner and it was nothing short of amazing. I'm sad I don't live closer, but we will be back ;)

Pretty good Mexican restaurant, right across from our hotel in Chelsea. We split the fish tacos, which were very tasty and filling. Good choice of draft beers. The Mexican decor is a bit cheesy, but fun.

Ordered takeout from this location and I was delightfully surprised by the authenticity and excellent flavor profile of the carne asada and fish tacos. Only margaritas in MA that taste right! Definitely Recommend. Took off a star for service received while waiting for the food. The restaurant had a good number of patrons and I initially thought that they were short staffed but as I counted the servers and attendants they had enough people. Did not seem short staffed that Thursday evening, however for a first impression, the "team" that night needed to get it together. Girl looked at cash like it was a foreign currency and she didn't know what to do with it, and all the other folks were very lackadaisical. Because the food was worth it, I would either overlook the level of service or like I plan to do, visit another location. I was shopping in the area and it was recommended. Food and the margarita did not disappoint. Would try them again on another occasion.

I came here on two separate occasions (maybe more in the future!) and was very happy that chips and salsa are provided upon arrival. On my first visit, I had the carne asada and on the second, I tried the quesadilla asada (which had carne asada inside); both times, the meat was so delicious and perfectly cooked. I would highly recommend anything with carne asada here. The rice and beans were fine, but nothing special. Everyone else enjoyed their meals as well. Overall, I had a good experience here both times and did not feel rushed. The music was good and at a reasonable level. The service was good and the table was clean. The décor here is also nice. Employees were wearing masks. There were some TVs around with sports on.

The staff here was awesome from the moment we walk through the door. I recommend calling ahead especially on the weekends to get a reservation. Our server Blanca was phenomenal we couldnt have asked for anyone better. She was attentive took the time to explain the Menu to us. William I believe who is a manager. He was very nice and pleasant. He made sure not only our needs were met but everyone else needs as well. He was constantly walking around to make sure we were Ok The feed was fresh and hot. May be alittle slow on Coming out but we'll worth the wait. Delicious from the 1st bite to the end. Also they don't make you feel rushed by hurrying you with the check they let you enjoy your food and let you enjoy the atmosphere here reminds me of all backyard parties that started at noon but finish the next day with fresh menedo hahaha Blanca and William thank you both for making us feel welcome. Can't wait to do it again with all of you guys Vic

Very friendly atmosphere. The food was delicious and the price was a bit high but that is because of the amount of food they serve. Their burritos are big for two people to eat and their margaritas are to die for! Highly recommend this restaurant!

I absolutely love going here. I highly recommend getting the bean dip, it is soo good. I sometimes order the flautas when I want a plate. The fajitas are also great. However, I usually get a bunch of apps and margaritas. I love the picada mixta and el potro sampler. The coconut margarita is my favorite! I live close by so I often will pop in for drinks and apps, dinner, or even take out. Every time I've been has always been superb. The food and drinks are delicious. The staff are always so nice and accommodating as well. There is a parking lot and both indoor and outdoor seating. I'm pretty much a regular here, I'm so happy they put this restaurant in Chelsea.

Where do I begin? The food is excellent, the staff is friendly, the bartender is a pro! It's always a pleasure to eat at El Potro for both the food and the atmosphere. They even have a spacious outdoor dining area during the months of warm weather.

If you are looking for authentic Mexican food, this probably isn't the best place. Do t get me wrong, it's decent food, but wow is the flavor lacking for the price. I've been to Mexico and trust me when I say that the taste is drastically different. TJ and Michoacan are two completely different places but the flavor is on point. This place also charged us for my son's birthday cake after telling me that it was on them. If things were different, I'm sure I'd rate it better but it is what it is.

Food was mediocre at best, but not worth the price. However, I could've dealt with the so-so food if the service had not been terrible. Waitress never asked for our drinks, never checked in and was all around rude. She threw the check down on the table and sighed. Check was not right either time. While waiting for the waitress to return we saw a huge rat right by the door to the patio. After leaving we noticed rat traps around the patio and restaurant. When we asked to speak with a manager he was also just as rude and not concerned with the service we received or the rat we saw so close to his restaurant. Will never be back. You can find better service and food else where.

Went here for lunch today, soo happy we did ! We sat outside on their patio. The servers all had masks and did a great job spacing out the customers. We started off with the amazing chips and salsa , and the BEST strawberry lemonade I've ever had ! I had the fish tacos that came with rice and black beans. SO. GOOD !! I love this place. Great service and great food ! Can't wait to come back !

EHH MEHHH. El Potro, I had such high hopes for you seeing the high reviews from my fellow yelpers. My father was in town and we decided to give this place a shot seeing as we were on our way into the city from the north shore. Yes, El Potro has a convenient location right off route one and is close to the massive Chelsea Market Basket, ya cant miss it. We came in on a Sunday afternoon and were hoping to get some good grub and catch up - - - seeing as my dad has moved out of town. We were sat in the bar area booths, which immediately irritated me shortly after sitting down seeing as they moved and you could feel every single thing from the people sitting behind you. I was playing some sort of sick version of tug of wore with the person behind me since both of us were moving the chair we were in from opposite sides. If this wasn't annoying enough we could barely hear ourselves think. YES. HEAR. DAMN. I'm down for having a good time and loud music but it's a Sunday at 3pm, why ya blasting our ear drums out? People I am talking ear crunching noise. Headache noise. Won't come back noise. There was live music combined with a radio station BLASTING at full volume our entire meal, it didn't stop. The food was fresh and large portions but the whole experience was just plain odd. I can't hear you.

Recently had a bday dinner and will not Be going back. Overall service is terrible. my entree arrived after everyone else had already finished their own . Server did not advise me that there had been a mistake. So I was patiently waiting the whole time while everyone else ate. Nothing was done to correct this error, not even a sorry .Poor ambiance also. Prices are overpriced for quality of food. Food is also not flavorful and honestly taco bell has better seasoning than here. This was definitely a night to forget and would not recommend.

It's a blast being there and the food is great. The staff there is awesome. One guy that works there took our order without writing it down and he just remembered the whole thing and not one person got the wrong order. It was amazing, I recommend coming here.

We're originally from TX and was staying close by and had the BEST Mexican food since living in TX.!!! 5 Stars don't do it justice. The most authentic and delicious food! Great margaritas and service. If you want to have a taste of Tex-Mex, stop here! the ambiance just added to the experience - better than anything we've had in years!!

What is a Grilli great restaurant? It's been open for quite a while now it seems the quality has slipped. The staff is not nearly as friendly. And the dining experience has gone down. They forgot items on my plate. It's got very expensive. I had lunch with dessert. the other day for $40, that's way too much even for New York City much less Chelsea Massachusetts. I almost laughed if I had cried so they need to get back on their game and lower their prices. I won't be going back for a while. Get real. 40 $$$$$$ lunch for tacos

Pretty good spot! Reasonably clean, friendly servers. Good square bar for sports with TVs. I'd be surprised if you hated it or loved it. Pretty safe bet, I live close and have been 4 times.

Looking for a fun atmosphere to eat, drink, & be merry after work? This is the spot! Drinks are great & food is delicious. There is also a nice patio to sit outside if the weather permits.
