A friendly, affordable taqueria near the fairgrounds with an excellent salsa bar. Oklahoma Gazette recommends its taco plates, breakfasts, and lengua; a reliable stop from morning through late evening.

I was recommended this place by a family member. I will say at first I was skeptical. At this place they do not come to your table and ask for your order like traditional restaurants. You instead go to the counter and order there. They do being you the food to the table. The pros, food was delicious. The price was very reasonable. They have a salad bar style of different salsas and condiments to enjoy. This was amazing to see. The drinks tasted great. The wait time from ordering to food to table was fast for my large party. Less than 7 minutes. The cons, ice machine was not working well. When paying with debit/credit there is a fee to use the machine. I don't agree with this at all as I am the customer and believe the business should front that cost. So either have cash or accept a hefty fee to pay with card. There were many flies that were floating around nothing too serious. People came in and out for to go orders so this contributed to that. Kids menu is limited to 3 options. Restrooms are also located outside of building, unsure why. Overall I had a good experience here and will definitely come back ( with cash) thank you for the amazing dinner.

Google
El rey is always a hit. Great food every time. Do yourself a favor and buy a pizza birria for $22. Or anything else on the menu really. Extra salsa and lime 😋

Google
Best menudo in town, very clean restaurant. Everything is delicious and they even have spicy avocado salsa! It's amazing Can't wait to try a burrito next time

Google
Arrived at around 9am on a weekday and ordered a breakfast burrito with an aguas frescas drink. Order came out quickly and the aroma was wonderful. The burrito was delicious and I could tell the tortilla was freshly made. In the background they had lively Mexican music. The waitress was was friendly and helpful. Place was well lit and very clean. Loved eating here. 👍

Google
This is more of a dive restaurant located in what was once a Dairy Queen. The food was fresh. Ordered a steak torta and steak tacos. The taco meat was more on the drier side and not heavily seasoned but still good. I assume the seasoning is the taco sauces you choose to use. They have a huge variety of different platters to choose from as well as various sodas, soft drinks and different flavored frescas. There is ample seating and I believe they do get a lot of business from the large amount of horse shows that happen throughout the year as this place is located directly across from the State Fair grounds which besides the horse and livestock shows, host numerous conventions, trade shows and the State Fair of Oklahoma in late September every year.

Google
The Drive-thru has a menu only, sat there waiting to order but the speaker system does not work. They should put up a sign, that says "Drive up to the window to order". Food and service was good though.

Google
Man, the asada fries and tacos are my absolute go-to. The steak is seriously next level — might be the best tacos I’ve had in ages. Anytime I’m near OKC, I make a point to stop by at least once. The prices are unbeatable, and the quality is top-tier. I’d recommend this spot any day of the week!

Google
My husband and I stopped here for a late dinner. the woman that took our order was super nice. our order was ready quickly and I had the little street tacos with Pollo and onions and cilantro... they were fresh and flavorful and the rice was perfect. if you haven't been you definitely should give them a try! great food, great service and a great price!

Neala B.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful! Got breakfast burritos for our group at the OKC dog shows, they are delicious, sauces amazing, huge and priced nicely. People are friendly, restaurant is clean, one of our go to's when we come to OKC. The salsa verde is just plain drinkable, will elevate anything it's on.

Yelp
The food is great, and its all pretty cheap. The service is really good too. It makes me wish I had a place like this back in my hometown

Yelp
Great Pastor Tacos, so delicious . this location is my favorite for sure. I have eaten here 100 times now.

Yelp
Popped in here last week with my partner for a breakfast burrito, and I was not disappointed. The woman who took my order was super sweet, and I got a peek of someone making fresh tortillas in the back which is always awesome to see! The vibe of the restaurant is very cozy and you can tell it's a well loved spot in the community. It was a Saturday morning, so naturally there were cartoons playing on the TV, a great opportunity to work on your Spanish if you're a beginner like me. This is definitely going on the rotation, highly recommend!

Yelp
Cute little authentic place that was clean and quick and polite with tasty food. I think the ceviche needed a smidge more like but it had a nice little kick to it which was nice. Beans and rice and guac were perfect. Excited to try the mojarra frita next time! I'm trying to reduce meat consumption and do more pescatarian so they had a couple good options
google avatar

Valerie S.

Yelp
Very fresh, very well seasoned, very Mexican! The staff is very nice. There are a lot if drink choices, sodas and Aqua Frescas. The sweet teas was like Sweet Tea! The restroom is accessed outside at the back but it was very clean!

Yelp
I visited this taqueria for the first time today. The inside is nicer than the outside and the cashier was pleasant. I ordered the burrito dinner with carne asada as my meat. A picture is attached. It was quite tasty and filled with plenty of beef. I even enjoyed the beans and rice. The price seemed a little high for a taqueria - $10.75 for the burrito plate and no chips/salsa - but maybe I'm just not yet used to this inflation. I left satisfied. :)
google avatar

Yelp
You know what...after coming to this place for the last 3 years...they are my fave burrito in town! I have to give them the love they deserve They are consistently tasty and I appreciate it so

Yelp
I've only been here once, but it might be my new Mexican spot. The thing I love about it is it is NOT TexMex. It's authentic Mexican food like you'd find on a street corner of any city with a high Mexican population. The only other authentic Mexican joints I've found are in the form of food trucks which is totally inconvenient for me as many do not take credit cards or do delivery. They have a condiment bar with the standard salsas and relishes and most importantly, they have red and green squeeze bottles. I ordered tacos and a burrito and it was just no-bullshit standard onions, cilantro, etc. No queso, no chili sauce, no sopapillas. Just straight up street-style Mexican food.

Yelp
We don't live in OKC, but we stopped in on a trip during the summer. We loved it so much that we made a point to come back today 6 months later while we are here again. I love the sopes with asada. The tacos are delicious. Taquitos are really yummy, too! 10 out of 10- I 100% recommend this place.
google avatar

Misti F.

Yelp
When you walk in, you'll find that you order up front and then can find your own seat. A quaint, unassuming place, but the food will change your mind. I had the mulitas. This little dish brings supreme flavor. The crispness of the fried corn tortilla, accompanied by the tender carne asada with melty cheese is perfect . Then, you add their homemade pico and salsa and it's an extra power punch to your tastebuds. The pineapple aqua fresca was refreshing, especially on a hot summer day.
google avatar

Miss B.

Yelp
Oh my word, this is good Mexican food. It's a small hole in the wall that will not let you down. We ordered the beef taquitos, they were a little bit crunchier than I prefer but still really good. The beef inside was delicious. I also ordered an al pastor taco and an asada taco because I wanted to try both meats and I definitely recommend both. My husband had the burrito macho and he cleaned his plate. I had the horchata and it was tasty. Seriously if you're in the area, stop in

Tobi C.

Yelp
Amazing! Love this perfect place to grab a quick bite. Across from the fair grounds! Easy parking. Most importantly the food... Perfectly blended...

Kevin O.

Yelp
Not a very clean place and the food was average at best. Probably won't be back, there are definitely many other better places not far from here.

Shelly S.

Yelp
This has to be the best taqueria in all of OKC. Quick and easy. We always visit when in OKC. Give them a try.

Nazaret C.

Yelp
A NO for me!!! Service okay bit you can tell they don't want to be there. Food... had better everything is so so greasy. Restaurant is not clean.
google avatar

Darrel V.

Yelp
Tried the mulitas lengua and the horchata. Both were great. There's a salsa bar with lots great choices and Mexican hot sauce on the tables. It's good, solid authentic Mexican. Drive on over and give them a try! They accept cards, too
google avatar

Emily F.

Yelp
The ceviche tostados are the reason we came, and they didn't disappoint. My hubby tried the menudo, and he liked it a lot. Also had beef taquitos and some carne asada tacos. This place is legitimately awesome.
google avatar

Janna G.

Yelp
Taqueria El Rey hosts some traditional Mexican plates along with a few elevated plates. Now I'm not talking about fancy elevated plates with beautiful presentation, or a flare of color, but they have brought something new to some of their dishes. The carne asada fries were introduced to me and as someone who is always excited to eat fries, they were very satisfying and very filling (I could barely finish half the plate!). The tacos were delicious! They had good flavor in each of the meats, which I love to have in a taco. They do have jamaica and horchata as well as a variety of bottled sodas. Now it is on the more expensive side for what they offer. Spending around $8-$15 to eat and get a drink.
google avatar

Brennan N.

Yelp
¡¡¡¡¡Me encanta taqueria el Rey!!!!! I love this taco place. It is my favorite taco joint. I have been to this location and the one on 23rd and it is excellent also.
google avatar

Danielle W.

Yelp
I just got food poisoning from their food truck down the road in front of Whitaker's. I only ate three asada tacos. I thought I was dying. I'll never eat from them again. My pelvis is literally in pain from it.
google avatar

Randy S.

Yelp
The rice and beans were the best part of my meal; everything else was normal. The service was good Easy access from and to the roads. Small place, and it is comfy. I am not going to go into detail about what each taco was missing according to my tastes or compare their recipes and portions to other places I like, but I just want to say that the seasonings for their meats fell flat with me. They served me a good clean meal here, but...
google avatar

Brett T.

Yelp
We love coming here for the tacos. Their food is so great. We don't make it over here vey often but every time we drive by, we crave these tacos. We always get the 5 different tacos for $5. I really enjoy tasting the variety and I'm always stuffed afterwards. Watch out for that lime/avocado green colored salsa. It's EXTREMELY hot and spicy. So if you like a lot of heat and spice then you'll love that salsa. I usually do a bit of the other one. It still has some kick but nowhere nearly as hot as the other one.
google avatar

Jessica V.

Yelp
Friendly staff and support military. Yay thanks family! So excited about this meal right now!

Jesus B.

Yelp
Excellent food! My wife and daughter had carne Asada tacos and loved them. I had three sopes, one with carne asada, one with carnitas, and one al pastor - they were all delicious and reminded me of the ones my mom made! We had their melon drink and it was also delicious! We'll be back for more and I definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

Matt M.

Yelp
The Tacos Al Pastor here are my personal faves, but I also like the Carne Asada. My husband (a somewhat picky eater) said that his ceviche tostada was very, very good. (And no, I didn't try to sample off his plate as I normally do.) I want to try one of Taqueria El Rey's tortas, but bread is soooooooo off my diet right now. I'm pretty sure that the owners also have a place on 23rd Street, and a truck at 10th & N. May. Good, home-style Mexican food. Don't go expecting mediocre, Okiefied Tex-Mex shit.
google avatar

Arturo E.

Yelp
Great taqueria. I was in town from Dallas and their food is right up there among the best taquerias I've visited. The restaurant is simple and clean, and the service was quick. I came in for a breakfast burrito and a coffee. The burrito was great- fresh eggs, scrambled with sausage, bacon, ham, and potatoes. The burrito was massive and i would have been fully satisfied with half of one! Coffee was regular drip coffee and creamer, but that's what you'd expect at a joint like this. Reasonably priced as well- 5 and some change. Overall would recommend.
google avatar

Rob W.

Yelp
Mexican cuisine straight from Abuelita! I am blown away at how delicious my meal was. In this cozy, unassuming restaurant lies some fantastic authentic recipes. I hope you like it spicy! (Let the hostess know if you are faint of heart and they will accommodate you!) I ordered the chicken fajitas with house flavoring and it was some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. The serving size was great and the price was just right. Next time you're in Oklahoma City and looking to spice up your date night, give this place a try. You'll love it!
google avatar

M S.

Yelp
Nothing fancy but the food was great. I had the carnitas and was a large serving. Salsa bar to add on extras. Mexican sodas. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Mom had a salad and daughter has quesadillas. All good. We will be back!
google avatar

Pepe K.

Yelp
You know this is a great place for Mexican food because they don't serve salsa, queso, and chips. This keeps the tourists away, and I think it's a fabulous idea! I've been to all locations including their truck in the Whittaker's parking lot. The consistency in product and service is almost unparalleled between locations. I lay awake thinking about burritos, mulitas, tacos, and tortas. These guys serve the best carnitas in OKC. Everything about the restaurants and the truck is true to form; it's the total tacqueria truck experience. I only wish I could get horchata at the truck. Instead, I have to settle for ice cold liters of my favorite soda pop in glass bottles. The restaurants aren't fancy and they don't need to be.
google avatar

Kat B.

Yelp
Great tacos. I have had the chicken only. First time they were on point. Second time, a bit greasy but still tasty. Their soda is super sweet like there isn't enough carbonation, but it's cold. Their prices are outstandingly cheap & the food is plentiful especially for a work day lunch.

Edward D.

Yelp
This used to be my favorite place for breakfast and sometimes dinner. I would often go to the Nw 23rd location and also tried the N May location. I loved the machaca breakfast plate. It was a perfect blending of flavors. It now seems, since changing ownership, the quality has changed as well. The machaca plate no longer comes with hashbrowns. The rice no longer has much flavor and beans seem watered down. It's now just an average place.

Yelp
We were craving "taco truck" tacos and had recently read a review for El Rey in the Gazette. So we knew where we were going to get our "fix"! We pulled up and it looked like it was closed at first, but I think that had more to do with the time (I think it was only 11?). However, we were pleased that they were in fact open. The menu was just like the best Taqueria's in California, and while I was wanting Tacos, when I saw they had Carne Asada fries, I almost cried (OK that's an over exaggeration...kind of). My husband stuck to his tacos (El Pastor). We took our number and sat at one of the booths. My husband's tacos came out first and he dug in! I snuck a bit in and LOVED their tortillas, but the Pastor was missing something. It was very good but needed just a little something to give it the wow factor. When my fries arrived, my hopes were kind of dashed. The fries looked pretty soggy, and the Carne Asada was a lot of gristle on sight. The flavor was good but it felt like they'd bought "steak'ums" and called it Carne Asada. Our hunt for the best Taqueria in OKC continues :(
google avatar

Rello R.

Yelp
Honestly this is the best Mexican restaurant I have been to in OKC. This tops the last one. So if I said I went to the best one it's not better then this one. It's authentic and it has a good feel to it. The only problem I had is they don't give Salas and chips. What Mexican restaurant doesn't give Salas and chips to people that dine in. But hey the food was good the portion size is good and the prices are good. Definitely a must go
google avatar

Bryant P.

Yelp
Eat there at least a couple of times a week. Usually the truck at NW 10th and May but if I want to sit down and take it easy I'll go to the May location. Barbacoa and lengua are my favorite. Even get the wife and daughter, who are very picky, to eat asada molitas. 5 tacos and a coke for $7 is a pretty reasonable price for lunch at the truck. Prices are a little higher at the restaurant but that is to be expected. Asada fries and tortas are great as well. Can not recall a bad experience.
google avatar

Richard W.

Yelp
Goooooooood authentic Mexican food! Very nice staff and super hot Sorano chili peppers! I'll definitely be back
google avatar

A Joe S.

Yelp
Best tacos al pastor I've had outside of Mexico City. Top notch...tender meat, with just a hint of crispness. I'm not sure what they did to get that flavor...unique and fabulous. The tacos con pollo are great also. If you have to pick one kind (but why?), go al pastor. Muy rico. Go now. Don't wait for Taco Tuesday.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
I LOVE the food here. Really cheap! You get a lot of bang for the buck. They have a variety of selections. Assad fries #39 - AWSOME! My wife loves Mojarra Frita #26. The fish is so BIG It barely fits in the to go container.

Melissa M.

Yelp
I ordered burritos and these were nasty. They had rice in the and sour cream on a burrito of el pastor! Who put sour cream on carnitas and in carnes del pastor! I thru way my food and I paid $20 for three burritos to right into the garbage where they belonged!
google avatar

Raymond R.

Yelp
Love that it's open so early on Saturdays for my early morning menudo. Haven't tried any other thing off the menu so I don't know about the other food. But the menudo is great.
google avatar

Cat P.

Yelp
Everytime me and my husband come to this establishment everything is always perfect the food is always amazing and the price is pretty cheap as well I recommend this place
google avatar

Kenneth F.

Yelp
Piss poor service I ordered threw the drive thru waited almost half an hour while other people came in and got their food before I did.. food wasn't that good and they tried to make excuses when I went in and demanded my food... won't be back
google avatar

Marie V.

Yelp
Looked this up on yelp. Great breakfast they had menudo...with and without hominey.they let you husband sample it before ordering since he is very picky...great authentic Mexican food

Kyle B.

Yelp
Awesome taqueria. Everything is so good. Same people who have the taco truck in the grocery store parking lot at 10th and May have just opened this restaurant. Large menu, and even has a drive-thru.

Bala B.

Yelp
This is the best place so far I've tried for Mexican fast food; trust me (if you can) I've tried many places in last two months since I've been here, this is good in food varieties, taste ambiance; I don't eat meat but found their Heuvos a la Mexicana and burritos Xcellent! Keep up

Kerry B.

Yelp
Loveeee the tortas every since I tried it I just can't get enough of it!!! So good and very affordable everything will be fresh as well.

Amanda P.

Yelp
Amazing place, all the food is good and service is fast. They serve Menudo everyday of the week!

Janell R.

Yelp
Very friendly staff and love the hours. Breakfast tacos are excellent and price can't be beat. Green chili is just like we have in New Mexico. It is simple and accommodating. Carry out is convenient. Enjoy going and will try new items soon.
