Where To Eat In Uptown

"You’re coming to El Rincon for the sole purpose of eating an arepa stuffed with sweet plantains and shredded beef, a patacon with perfectly crispy tostones, and cachapa that’s so fluffy a single tear will roll down your cheek. The space is very small, with a handful of card tables and folding chairs. It’s decorated with Venezuelan flags, paintings, and a TV playing various concerts provides the playlist. Yes, the juices from the incredible pulled pork might drip out of the little basket it’s precariously served in, but you won’t care. The food is too good and the service too friendly to get upset about anything." - adrian kane, courtney sprewer, veda kilaru, john ringor

El Rincón De Fabio - Review - Uptown - Chicago - The Infatuation

"You're at El Rincón de Fabio for some of Chicago's best arepas. And if you decide to focus on anything else while you're here, there’s also a fluffy cachapa, and a patacon that deserves an Oscar for best performance in textures. In fact, the Venezuelan food at this charming Uptown spot is so compelling, you’ll look past any potential sensory overload. photo credit: Kim Kovacik photo credit: Kim Kovacik photo credit: Kim Kovacik It’s easy to get overwhelmed by El Rincón’s flashing neon lights, butterfly decals, TVs playing concerts, and the variety of dishes on the long menu—including tacos, bowls, and Venezuelan snacks. Instead, just focus on the house specials and arepas. All the arepas come on thick, grilled dough and have plenty of fillings to choose from. But the standouts are the la veguera stuffed with pieces of steak, and the pabellón criollo, which is Venezuela’s national dish in arepa form. Regardless of what you order, the combination of fillings, cheeses, and homemade sauces that El Rincón has curated will distract you from thinking about the time you ended a work call with "love you." photo credit: Kim Kovacik The arepas aren’t the only options capable of instigating an existential crisis. It’s possible to spend seven minutes debating the merits of forgoing the cachapa for a patacon, and whether you need a side order of tequeños (you do). But count on getting some help from the people who work at El Rincón. They’ll provide as much guidance as necessary and even throw in some tips on the best way to reheat your leftovers. FYI, an air fryer or oven is acceptable, using a microwave is blasphemy. El Rincón’s food should be eaten right away for optimum enjoyment, so our only complaint is that the small dining room (there’s just a handful of card tables and folding chairs) doesn’t always guarantee a seat. And make sure to ask for extra napkins because mess is unavoidable—whether from hastily gobbling down the cachapa, or because of the pulled pork juice running out of the serving basket. Either way, you won’t care. The food is too good and the service too friendly to be upset about anything. Food Rundown Chicken Empanada Get this to share, or as part of the Venezuelan Taste sampler. It has a crispy crust and a doughy interior packed with shredded chicken. Take advantage of the squeeze bottles on each table, which are filled with a delicious housemade green hot sauce. photo credit: Kim Kovacik Tequeños Is there anything more satisfying than cheese wrapped in dough and fried? Maybe, but we haven’t found it yet. photo credit: Kim Kovacik Pork Patacon The patacon is a house specialty and deserves a lifetime achievement award for texture. The plantains are fried to the ideal level of crispiness, and when combined with soft shredded pork (our favorite filling), fresh slaw, and hot sauce, you have a perfect bite of food. They serve a smaller version in the sampler. photo credit: Kim Kovacik Pabellón Criollo Arepa This is Venezuela’s national dish—pabellón criollo—as an arepa. Here, it gets layered with black beans, sweet plantains, shredded beef, sour cream, and a generous handful of queso blanco that melts with all the warm fillings. La Veguera Arepa This is the best arepa on the menu. The proportions are wonderfully balanced between the steak, fresh pico, chunky guasacaca, a tangy cilantro sauce we’d love to keep at our desks for a pick-me-up throughout the day. Pork Cachapa Another house specialty, you might mistake the sweet and savory cachapa for that Frette down comforter you’ll be able to afford when you’re 90. It’s so fluffy, you'll want to crawl in next to the tender chunks of pork and wrap yourself up in the corn pancake." - Veda Kilaru

Google
Amazing food - the pabellon arepas were incredible! Service was wonderful, everyone was very nice. The decor and outside seating is really nice too. Definitely will return to try something else. Had to take a bite before I took a picture because it looked too good.

Google
Omg I just can not even explain how amazing this food was here. We had seen this place on social media, and they were not lying. The Venezuela taste appetizer was so full of flavors that meat was fantastic. Then I ordered the arapa la veguera and I kept just nodding my head, saying yes omg so good. My bf had the chicken combo #2 and it was delish. The chicha never had it, but it was good. Definitely will be coming back. Muchas gracias por la comina y el servicio Todo estaba perfecto.

Google
Wow!! Venezuelan food is my new favorite -- everything was delicious. I visited with a few friends where we ordered food and worked on our laptops. The food was great and the staff were very kind to us. Also, there was a person who was causing a commotion in front of the restaurant. The owners handled the situation with respect and humanity. Good people own this restaurant and we will be back!!

Google
Being Venezuelan it’s sometimes hard to find food that tastes exactly like the one I grew up with. But this.. this was amazing I loved everything that I ordered -which was chicha and a cachapa- it tasted like being back home and will definitely will be going back.

Google
Delicious flavors of Columbia with a cool ambiance to set the mood. Fast and friendly service with amazing attention, making us feel special and welcomed. Portions were generous, and take-home containers were needed. Guava & Mango drinks did not disappoint! Must grab one, or both on your visit.

Nice Venezuelan restaurant serving traditional dishes such as fried chicken, arepitas, and plantains. Very nice service! We enjoyed the patio area. Try the herb sauce!!

First time visitor and will be back again. Online ordering was quick and easy, food was ready at set time. Fabio was so welcoming and friendly. Ordered a shredded beef empanada and a pabellon arepa both were incredible. Large portions full of flavor

Yelp
First time trying this place and it was great. The service is real good. Would recommend this place if you want some good authentic Venezuelan food.

Yelp
On a whim my lovely wife and I dined at El Rincon De Fabio on a warm Thursday evening. This colorful Venezuelan restaurant is located on Argyle just west of Sheridan. The interior is wildly decorated so it feels like you are in some sort of parade. They also have a covered outdoor patio should you wish to dine outside. We ordered at the counter, and our food was brought out to us in minutes. I had a hard time choosing what to order, mainly because the menu seemed loaded with interesting choices. We were amazed to find that our entree selections qualified for a free glass of icy margarita each, so we were grateful to receive free beverages. My capacha was a large sweet corn pancake that is folded over and stuffed with cheese and your choice of filling (I went with shredded brisket) - it was a yummy and satisfying dinner. My love enjoyed her plate of brisket filled arepas - yup, two arepas in an order. I have a hunch that we will return to El Rincon De Fabio when we're in the area.

Yelp
El Rincon De Fabio 1002 W Argyle St, Chicago, IL 60640 Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars I've walked past this beautiful spot on Argyle many times. The area is known for its vibrant Vietnamese food scene, but there are a few hidden gems tucked closer to Sheridan--and El Rincon De Fabio is definitely one of them. Stepping inside feels like entering a Venezuelan oasis. The décor is completely on theme, from the seating and tables to the music and TV--it's an immersive experience. I also really loved the cozy front patio area. The main server was incredibly sweet and helpful, especially as I navigated the vegetarian options. I ended up trying a mushroom combo and a potato combo, both served with a mix of pico de gallo, plantains, and fries. Everything was flavorful, though I personally preferred the potato dish over the mushroom one--my palate isn't the most adventurous, so the simpler flavors worked better for me. I will say, being vegetarian here is tough--the meat dishes looked absolutely delicious. Once I'm ready to eat meat again, I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu. Overall, this was a solid first experience. If you're in the area, definitely stop by and check out this hidden gem--it's well worth your time.

Yelp
EXCELLENT!! Finally made it in here and you have a fan for life! Was already excited to try the arepas, but then you offer free margaritas for customers, 10000% yes please and thank you. I had the crispy fish arepa and it was excellent. Packed with flavor and textures, and perfectly fried fish. I could've stopped at one, but I ate both in one sitting and I had no regrets. Also lots and lots of delicious sauce- loved it! Can't wait to come back and try more!

Yelp
Wow! Where to start... I found this place while on a morning walk and it was all I could think about all day! Came here for dinner and fell in love! The ambience was warm and inviting. The service was great! I don't think I've ever seen anyone smile so much. The food was amazing! Overstuffed arepas were not only full of meat, cheese, etc, they were full of love as well! The fine folks here truly care about what they're serving. I don't usually eat at the same place twice when I visit Chicago but I made an exception for El Rincon! I ate here on Saturday AND Sunday!

Yelp
the amount of swear words going through my mind eating these.... i can not share with the world. the amount of lives i would sacrifice i mean live over and over again to eat this over and over again.... oh boy... i never identified with a small window art more.... a reflection of me i am not afraid to show. i am no longer me but i am it. they reduced me down to a mere eating machine. i couldnt be happier. oink .

Yelp
A solid Arepa joint that is family owned and who are very enthusiastic about you trying the entire menu. The service they provide is also top-notch. The place itself is colorful, clean, and has a fun vibe. The food is also fantastic, I tried the La Puerca Arepa which was juicy and flavorful. I also had Tequeños having no idea what they were and it was basically a Venezuelan cheese-stick with a honey mustard-esque sauce. Not my speed, but wouldn't say don't try it. I would, and have, recommend it to anyone who hasn't been here yet.

Yelp
I love this place. I was having a very bad day of luck and yknow what, the arepas from Fabio's SAVED MY LIFE. Look at the crispy outsides. The gooey insides. Flavor unlike anything. What's special? It's made with love. Looking forward to many more encounters with El Rincon de Fabio.

Caley D.

Yelp
Service, food, and vibes are on point. Definitely will be returning. Large portions worth the price.

Yelp
I live around the block and love arepas rellenos so decided to try this new spot out! IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT. I forgot the name of the arepa I got but it had steak pieces in it and the steak was so well marinated and juicy. I also love that it came as two little arepas instead of a giant one that would be much harder to eat. I also ordered the maduros which were not sweet. Very different than the maduros I'm used to so be warned. They weren't bad, just not what I was expecting and the arepas still made up for it. Def coming back!
google avatar

Yelp
My friend and I walked by this place and the outdoor patio caught our eye. We decided to have dinner here and sit outside as it was a beautiful sunny day. We ordered some arepas, one with pork, brisket, and chicken. My favorite was the brisket which was recommended. The one I would not recommend was the pork as it wasn't as tender as the chicken and brisket. The chicken and brisket are the most popular arepas to order. This place is great for food and drinks as you can get some good margs here as well. The staff was very patient with us with what we should get. I would love to come here again to try it other items on their menu as well.
google avatar

Alfie M.

Yelp
Delicious arepas, always wanted to try it and when doing so it just hit the spot. Tender meats and good portions
google avatar

Yemna K.

Yelp
Delicious, reasonably priced with huge portions. The food is all incredibly fresh, flavorful and homey. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Had the plantain sandwich with brisket and it was divine. This is such a cute, casual and yummy place. Second time coming, can't wait to come back.

Yelp
WOW!! I have been wanting to try this restaurant for a while now but have just never gotten the chance. I am now so upset with myself that it's taken me this long to try it! Ordered for lunch today and the food was delicious, hot, and fresh. Also getting 2 huge arepas for only $18 is such a steal it was hard to believe! Staff was extremely nice when i picked up my food as well. Will for sure be returning in the future! Cannot recommend enough!
google avatar

Andrew P.

Yelp
Came in here on a Friday night to pick up food for dinner to take home. The guy working behind the counter was friendly and made some recommendations for me based on my hunger level. The place inside is inviting, cozy, and has great colorful decor. My food was very tasty, and I'd 100% recommend this place to others. I love Venezuelan food! I'll be back!
google avatar

Jen P.

Yelp
Check out this lovely family run gem on Argyle! Arepas with a variety of fillings and all pair well with the homemade sauces--one a cilantro cream and another slightly spicy version. The service is welcoming (thank you, Albert!) and the food tastes like a wonderful home cooked meal! You can dine inside or outside (recommended, weather permitting!). Recommended dishes: Venezuelan taster (appetizer), Paballon, Doña Eliana, and Verguera. Can't wait to come back and try the fries!
google avatar

Judit C.

Yelp
The best Venezuelan arepas in Chicago! It's definitely delicious and the best I ever had! Second time eating here in one week, and it's even better than the previous one. The Shredded Beef Arepas what I ordered was very tasty, flavorful. Perfect seasoning for me, especially because I don't eat spicy food, and this was delicious. My daughter ordered the Sausage Arepas and that was also delicious. For drinks, we ordered the Mexican bottled Coca Cola. And with Yelp check in, I had received a full size cup of Passionfruit Juice. Very yummy! When you walk in, go to the register to order your meal, pay for it, then find an available table, or order it to go. The cashier, a young man, was very polite. He also served the food when it was ready. He came back to check on me if I needed anything else. The dining room is small, but they have plenty of tables and chairs. It's colorfully decorated with flowers and flags, and even Venezuelan paper money is on display at every table under a plastic cover. It's very interesting to see the huge size of paper money. There are additional tables and chairs outside, right front of the restaurant if you prefer outdoor dining.
google avatar

Nina R.

Yelp
We visited the storefront and its adorable, brightly colored, festive outdoor seating area on a food tour, and we really enjoyed it. Service was quick - they had our food ready and on trays. We sampled beef and chicken arepitas, and while they were delicious, the real star of the show was the cilantro sauce. We could have dove into a bucket of it! The arepitas were the best I've ever had, and the cilantro sauce really kicked it up another notch. Would absolutely return, would absolutely recommend.
google avatar

Thomas M.

Yelp
The food here is top notch. Truly delicious every time. I don't quite know how they get everything perfect every time. We've come here 8-10 times since they've opened and the consistency is impressive. We typically order the family meal + empanadas and we're always very satisfied. The cheese empanada's are incredible. We have rotated through the chicken, pork, and brisket family meals and are always impressed by how tender and perfectly seasoned everything is. The portions are incredible too, so we are always eating leftovers for days afterwards. I dont love the new change where if you order ahead they dont start making it until you arrive and pay (we usually pay in cash). But I assume this is because a customer didnt arrive after placing a big order and their margins are thin. Not convenient for me, but the food is good enough that Ill work with them on it.
google avatar

Khadijah H.

Yelp
Local authentic Venezuelan restaurant spending their culture in the uptown/ Vietnamese neighborhood. If the sight of their colorful outdoor patio doesn't draw you near, the smell of their food will do the rest. They have live music playing on the tv to keep patrons entertained. Super cozy seating which gives the family feel and vibes. The cashier must be the son or brother of the chefs as he was super knowledgeable and upbeat. He had tons of recommendations and did a great job being alert and available once we were ready to order. I chose to try four of their empanadas: two beef and two chicken. I had a major craving for them lol They took about 10 minutes to arrive and came with an avocado green creamy salsa that can be used but trust the empanadas their own work. You can tell the breading is made in house and stuffed right in the kitchen. If you held the empanada in your palm, it holds massive weight. Like they are not skimpy on the filling or the size of the empanada. For four, I paid $16 which isn't bad. In other non authentic places you may get two or three depending. The flavors were there and it wasn't dry. I intend to refund to try their well known arepas!
google avatar

Vesuvi T.

Yelp
I ordered a veggie bowl for take-out. It was so large, I'll be eating the remainder for tomorrow's lunch! Very delicious.
google avatar

Tracy L.

Yelp
Delicious and great portions for the price and quality. We ordered takeout, and everything was packaged nicely. Incredible flavors, not too salty, and the arepa was soft and held up nicely. Meat was tender and juicy, and beef empanadas paired well with the green sauce. I'd definitely dine in if I'm in the area!
google avatar

Mikael N.

Yelp
So glad I decided to go to this place. The owner was so nice and was great to talk to. The food was amazing and they had some great cilantro and hot sauces to put on as needed. The brisket and fried pork were amazing.

Michael A.

Yelp
Food is delicious! Service is quick and the ambiance is inviting. I'm mad I didn't start coming here soon. Been missing out on so much flavor and good food!
google avatar

Maggie B.

Yelp
Great food and excellent service! We ordered the crispy fish arepa, veggie arepa, and chips with guasacaca. All of it was delicious. The star of the show was honestly the sauce in the green bottle on the table. Not sure what it was but it tasted like a cilantro lime crema and it was good on everything!
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
First time trying El Rincon De Fabio. Cute place. Service was great. Food was phenomenal!! Our new favorite place for arepas even though Bien me Sabe is literally 2 minute walk from our place. Arepas we're fresh. Just crispy enough but not hard. Just enough delicious filling that you can pick them up without making a mess. Empanada we're awesome as were the maduros. Will definitely add this to our rotation.

Sam B.

Yelp
This is a great find especially if you are gluten free. Everything is made from corn. Food is tasty. Service is great. Has different flavors in a good way. Also byob doesn't hurt.

Meg V.

Yelp
Just happened by this gem of a place & So happy we did! Lots of amazing entrees and yucca fries Don't forget to get a fresh squeezed juice drink- life changing! Great from start to finish & so homey and welcoming. Well done Fabio, well done indeed.
google avatar

Bill S.

Yelp
Food is delicious and at a comfortable price. I have made this my go to stop for my Arepas. Try the Latin bowls as well. You have to come try the drink called ChiCha, it is delicious.
google avatar

Trina B.

Yelp
Food is absolutely delicious! So many great flavors in one dish. Love the vibes of the place too
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
Wow! Just wow! This place opened earlier this month and we could not wait to try! As we walked in you could feel the energy and smell the delicious aroma. Sadly we had to run so we took our order to go. Our food traveled well and we were floored at how amazing it tasted! We will be repeat customers.
google avatar

Jason W.

Yelp
A new Uptown food gem! I can't recommend this place enough. The beef Arepas are the best I've ever had. Perfectly crisp outside with high quality beef. Next time I've got to try the pork or chicken because these were top tier. The sauces provided were very flavorful and added a good level of heat. The waiter was extremely friendly and we will definitely be back. The only possible complaint is that the napkins are very thin and it's a messier food with all the sauces. I felt bad using so many.
google avatar

Cass A.

Yelp
We were invited to try this restaurant to see if it compared to the Venezuelan cuisine growing up. The portions were impressive, the flavors shined, and we enjoyed our experience overall. We were transported back to Caracas with the food combined with the music. The space was tight, but it was sufficient for our party of four.
google avatar

Paola M.

Yelp
I visit this place with high expectations after reading reviews, drive 40 min to get here but I'm disappointed. The food was ok. Not amazing I tried arepas in the past at Florida a few times and they were amazing so I thought here was gonna be the same. So sad I been wanting to try them for so long. I ordered the Queen and was mostly cheese. Cilantro sauce wasn't even amazing. I really wanted to like it since I tried arepas before and they were great. Is ok food is food but since I try better in the past including a fantastic cilantro sauce I can't give better review. Is ok but not amazing. My co worker always bring them and they even taste better. Is sad the didn't work out for me. If you read this and ever travel to Florida try Mecatos bakery arepas you wont regret it
google avatar

Andy B.

Yelp
This is a new restaurant off the Argyle Red Line stop in the Uptown neighborhood. Fun decor, incredibly unassuming. You're here for the food, not a lot of bells and whistles. Order and pay at the counter, and they'll bring it out to you. I didn't even ask if they have a BYOB policy, but there was no alcohol on the menu. I had brisket arepas. They were filled with fried plantains, black beans, tender brisket, cheese, and sour cream. It really was a delightful experience and incredibly filling! Go check them out. I hope they stick around.
google avatar

Joe F.

Yelp
Great local Argentinian spot uptown! Nothing fancy but great food! Great service. great Empanadas.

Kristine H.

Yelp
The food was definitely great! Their spicy and cilantro sauces completed the flavors of this meal. Service was excellent! They were very busy the night I went.

Caduceus R.

Yelp
Love this Venezuelan restaurant. I love the decor - not fancy - more like a exuberant disco party with strong cultural pride. The food is amazing. The people are extremely welcoming (it is counter service only). This is the third Venezuelan place we have tried on the north side, and has become our very first choice - we go back all the time. Portions are huge.
google avatar

Steven E.

Yelp
Love this place as an addition to the neighborhood! There are so many things on the menu I want to try so we'll definitely be putting this in our rotation. For our first visit we got the chicken tacos and the Venezuelan taste meal, which is an awesome option to get a little sampling of several items. Portion sizes were generous! The tacos are not tiny little ones that will leave you hungry. One of our favorite bites was the empanada, but everything was good and tasted fresh, clean, and healthy. We'll be back soon to try their bowl and other items!
google avatar

Matt B.

Yelp
I was a big fan of El Rincon De Fabio. The food was flavorful and very reasonably priced. The interior is still pretty bare bones given that it's a very new place, but the service was very fast. I can't help but compare this to Bien MeSabe given their cuisine, proximity and my affinity for Bien. Rincon is less frills, a more focused menu, and more affordable. The quality is a notch below Bien, but that is to be expected with the price savings. Overall, a worthy opponent but not to the same level IMO. Rincon would get a 4.5 from me if I could, but since I can't I round up. Definitely a welcome addition to Argyle!

Virginia A.

Yelp
Very nice service, colorful atmosphere, we ordered arrepas. Both were really good and the serving size justifies the price.
google avatar

Mark T.

Yelp
This place was our first time there. Everyone you have to come eat here. Staff is amazing but the food is truly delicious. Make sure to order the Latin Bowl
google avatar

Joseph A.

Yelp
Welcome to the neighborhood, El Rincón de Fabio! Just recently discovered that we had a Venezuelan restaurant in Uptown. I love my arepas so now I have somewhere to go within walking distance. Yes they had a nice selection of food that I can eat on their menu and the items are reasonably priced. Eventually I will get to taste everything on the menu, that I have no restrictions to eat (everything but two items). It is a great discovery to get a taste of Venezuela before I bring my family to Chicago.

Vicki D.

Yelp
Our food was absolutely delicious! From the Empanada, to the Salchipapas, and the Beef Arepa! Even the ginger tea was a nice finish to our dinner.
google avatar

Sonya M.

Yelp
Such great food and good prices!! You get two arepas for a really decent price and they are a lot of food! Great service and cute inside

A S.

Yelp
Delicious Arepas accompanied by great staff. I've come here with my husband a few times and the last time I left my bag and didn't realize for a hot minute. My husband called the store for me to see if it was still there and all he had said was "Hola" before the cashier (a very friendly and helpful young man who's always working when we visit) immediately recognized him and told him my bag had been forgotten there (and still was there.) Good food and good folk
google avatar

Julia R.

Yelp
The food was so good! I've not had Venezuela food before, so I had no expectations. I got some arepas, both cheese and meat, and a chicken empanda. I ordered ahead of time, and it was ready on time and hot. Everything was flavorful, and I had enough for dinner and lunch the next day. The items I got were fried, but I didn't notice any grease. Even when I reheated the next day, it wasn't soggy and kept well. I'm excited to try again.
