This Charming Western Town Is Right Out of a Storybook—With European-inspired Architecture and Incredible Mountain Views

"For margaritas, tacos, and views of Gore Creek, there’s El Segundo. After a half-day hike along Lost Lake Trail or something more strenuous, like Upper Piney River Falls, take a seat at El Segundo. Just come hungry; it’s all too easy to fill up on the chips and queso blanco before diving into 24-hour carnitas tacos or the smothered chicken burrito." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. El Segundo - Review - Vail Village - Vail - The Infatuation

"This lively taqueria stays packed from lunch through dinner, with the après-ski hours drawing a particularly energetic (and local) crowd. Beyond the long list of tacos, we love the grilled fajitas, carnitas burrito, and the Tijuana chili dog with fresh jalapenos and a drizzle of crema. Hang out at the long bar, or if it happens to be a balmy afternoon, head out to the patio. It’s the perfect spot to down a spicy margarita and a steaming bowl of posole while taking in views of Gore Creek. photo credit: Kim Fuller" - Kim Fuller

The 13 Best Restaurants In Vail

"This taqueria is usually busy from lunch through dinner, and the afternoon après hours are especially buzzing during ski season. Beyond the long list of tacos, we love the grilled fajitas and carnitas burrito. In the summer and early fall months, the outdoor patio is a perfect sunny spot to order a tequila cocktail and plate of chorizo queso fundido while you look out over Gore Creek. They also have a new Eagle location for when you’re down the Valley and find yourself desperately craving some al pastor." - kim fuller

Google
An ordinary restaurant in an unusual city. We ordered tacos, ceviche, and hot chocolate. The only truly tasty dish was the tacos — the rest could have been better. The service wasn’t great overall. The outdoor atmosphere, however, was beautiful.

Google
The river view is really peaceful. Great place to talk while having a beautiful and peaceful view. Went yesterday to get lunch with the family and the salads were really yummy, you could tell the fruit was fresh. The tacos weren’t so good though. The tortillas were a little bit hard and even though the flavours were there, you could tell it had been in the fridge for a while.

Google
We visited Vail the week of New Years! We had an hour wait, but it was worth it! The food and service were great!

Abdul Rahman A.

Google
After searching for a good Mexican restaurant in Vail, this was the best option we found. Sadly, the experience didn’t go as we anticipated. The location is nice, the restaurant sits over a river, which was probably the highlight of our visit. The service was good too. Unfortunately, the most important part, the food, was disappointing. Even the guacamole wasn’t that great and nothing that we ordered stood out. The fajitas were below average. Overall, they really need to improve the quality of the food they offer.

Google
El Segundo in Vail is a total winner! The chicken nachos were TO. DIE. FOR. Crunchy, cheesy, and loaded with flavor. And let's talk about the Strawberry Yum Yum margarita... AMAZING! Perfect blend of sweet and tangy. Service was top-notch too! Can't wait to go back and try more of the menu. Highly recommend El Segundo for a delicious meal and drinks in Vail!

Angela B.

Google
I had an amazing time dining at El Segundo – from start to finish, everything was top-notch. The atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming, the food was absolutely delicious, and the service? Outstanding. A special shoutout to Kat, our waitress, who truly made our night. She was friendly, attentive, and incredibly knowledgeable about the menu. Kat went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. It’s rare to get service that feels both professional and personal – and Kat nailed it.

Google
The deck overlooking Gore Creek is the place to sit. I am a decades-old fan of Mexican food; Tex-Mex, New Mexico Mex, Northern Mexico Mex, SoCal Mex, I love it all! We have been here 3 times--will NOT be back. The food purports to be upscale and authentic with ??? black beans, pickled onions, argula, and kale, but...really???!!! Who puts argula and kale into Mexican food? The beans and rice were flavorless. The queso was ok. The salsa is fantastic and so are the tostada chips--have those with drinks, but I would pass on actual dinner. The store in Eagle was much better, but they closed, unfortunately. This store used to serve much more flavorful and relevant food. What happened?

C S.

Google
All was decent enough in a pinch. Had a couple of Cadillac Margs, a go-to for my party and they just tasted a little off, a little bitter. The nachos were just ok. We left to try a different spot because we just werent loving the experience, or the atmosphere. With all the world class options in Vail its just ordinary.

Yelp
Awesome restaurant. Great vibe! Upbeat music. Casual, friendly service. Star of the show was the tacos!! Simply delicious! Many different and interesting proteins to pick from. A close second were the margaritas. Maybe 8 or so different types!! Highly recommend!!!
google avatar

Yelp
3 of us ordered burritos, the chicken burrito I had 3 very small pieces of chicken 1" by 1", husband had 2, our friend had 3 small pieces of beef. It was a joke! They should be called rice burritos! Oh wait there were about 15 beans per burrito! The fountain Coke Zero had no carbonation. The tacos were ok. We do not recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
This place has the festive vibe, fresh food and the drinks flowing! It's a modern restaurant with quality ingredients and a fun atmosphere! In the winter we sit indoors and when the weather is warm we like watching people kayak down the river from the deck view. It's always a good time! Veggie Fajitas are spicy hot and fresh!
google avatar

Maggie L.

Yelp
taco salad very generous. Baja fish was a little skimpy for nine dollars. Had to go find our server to ask for another glass of wine. forgot to say that they had some of the best french fries I've ever eaten.
google avatar

Yelp
Almost every time we visit Vail, we make a stop at El Segundo. Fresh guac, good salsa and delicious queso with perfectly seasoned chips. Good drink variety and Jarritos for the non alcoholic drink lover. I love their tacos and my wife loves their bowls. We love the dog friendly patio, excellent customer service and the food.
google avatar

Sanjana J.

Yelp
Stopped here for a quick bite and loved the burst of flavor in their vegetarian cauliflower tacos! The salsa was fresh and chips crispy. Ambiance was great as it right over the scenic stream. Would 100% recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
My street corn salad was fresh and tasty. Chicken tortillas were good. I enjoyed the decor. We sat outside with heaters and a flowing stream. Service was fine.

Yelp
I'll start by saying, I got sick after eating here. I'm not sure if the pork wasn't cooked right, I really wanted to love this place solely based on the vibes, but the food was bland. I've lived in Texas and New Mexico so I probably have higher standards than most. the Service was great though!

Lynne D.

Yelp
Cute place, great setting. However...the menu is very weird---kale? Argula? Black beans? pickled onions? We have eaten there 3 times and at the former Eagle store once. The food is not seasoned well---actually not seasoned at all. El Segundo cannot decide what it wants to be---taco truck, Southern California? Very disappointed in ALL except the chips and salsa. The guacamole was frightening. Wish they would get their act together--it's a long drive to get decent Mexican food up here in the Rockies.

Yelp
Delicious food, great service and wonderful views on the patio. Great Mexican food in Vail

Yelp
Service was great! We walked in without a reservation and the wait was 40min. However, the ladies at the counter got creative made a nice table for 2 which we really appreciated. Nachos were good. My only issue is that they come on a tray with paper so it's hard to peel them up and not eat some paper. We also ordered the fajitas with steak. Honestly/ the steak was overcooked and tough. Prob not something I'd get again. Generally good place. Nice decor, good vibe, good drinks, good for apps (small bites). Next time I'll try a taco.
google avatar

Yelp
Nestled in the center of Vail Village, this restaurant has it all. Beautiful outdoor seating along the running creek as well as a nice inside dining area. The food was delicious and the service was top notch. Our waitress was very informative and friendly. We got right in and ordered our food came out so quickly and it was very fresh. We will definitely visit anytime we are in Vail.
google avatar

Tiffany H.

Yelp
We were lucky to get a seat by the bar. Place is busy. There's happy hour after 9pm I think. The food cane in pretty fast. I love the T shirt the bartender was wearing. "Tell me I'm pretty" live that!
google avatar

Melissa A.

Yelp
I went to El Segundo with a big group and we were seated in the back room at a long table. It was really nice to have our own separate space. However, we had to meet a bill minimum and thus ended up having to order a lot more drinks than we were intending to order. The tacos were quite good, but $9 per taco is pretty steep. This restaurant was very accommodating for a big group, but not sure I would go back for dinner in the future given the resort town prices.

Yelp
Was in Vail with my best friend and we stumbled upon this spot on a quiet Sunday. Night. The food was awesome. I highly recommend the Korean BBQ taco. Chips and salsa were stellar too. Service was super friendly, super quick, and super awesome! Great recommendations, and they checked on us regularly! Loved the ambiance- right on the water. Plenty of outdoor seating. Really was an awesome experience! The only downside was when we paid- the tip section did not offer a 20% - they only offered 23% and higher! I suppose it is Vail. Anywho- that was the only negative!
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
We could not have been more disappointed! The tacos were cold. I mean not even room temperature as they tasted as if they had just come out of refrigerator. It seems as though they are not cooked to order and just assembled from pre-made ingredients. The watermelon in the watermelon salad was mushy. Perhaps it had been soaking in the marinade and was therefore soft and soggy. It was our worst meal of our 11 day trip throughout Colorado.
google avatar

Kelsey A.

Yelp
Another great time here. I highly recommend sitting outside overlooking the creek on a nice day. The mini ahi poke tacos were excellent. But you can't go wrong with the ceviche and a drink- easily enough for a lunch.
google avatar

Joseph J M.

Yelp
it was open for mud season! great house margs! good salsa and queso, OK chips incredible tacos. The yardbird was amazing! acceptable bar service for an afternoon delight.
google avatar

Kerry K.

Yelp
We stopped here for lunch while we were shopping. I wanted to stop because they offered flights to sample. The flights are of tequila (I guess I didn't read). I thought it would be of margaritas. Oh well- the purple rain margarita I did get- was absolutely Devine! 10/10 recommend! I also opted for the chicken bowl- it was so filling too! My husband couldn't finish his burrito. (Large portions) Our server was attentive & gave great suggestions. The atmosphere was pretty chill as we were there during lunch. I don't know how it would be later in the evening. The food was good- but was very pricey (more than we are used to from the Midwest). It is comparable to others in the area though. I am still talking about that margarita! It was so good!
google avatar

Sammy L.

Yelp
Average/ Americanized Mexican in Vail. We got tacos and burrito bowls. The price was not cheap, but average for vail. Wasn't super authentic but it at least tasted good and had flavors. They don't take reservations, but we walked in around 830pm and had no wait.
google avatar

Katie J.

Yelp
Staff was great! The quality of the food was just ok. The price for the quality was a complete mismatch. They don't allow substitutions and most items come with cilantro in one form or another so if you remove the sauces you're left with dry meat and no option to add avocado. I ended up eating the Philly steak taco one night and it was good, unhealthy fake cheese, but good and the other night I got the jalapeño burger. The bun was like crumbly paper and was not good. My husband ordered the basic burger and he said it wasn't good. To be fair, we love quality burgers and good Mexican food and that's hard to find in vail. I also ordered the skinny margaritas on two different occasions and both times they were way too sweet. Great staff though!
google avatar

Amy M.

Yelp
Came in the evening around 7pm. We waited for 10 minutes. We had 2 house margaritas that were FANTASTIC. We started with chips and salsa and the watermelon salad. The salad was the best thing I EVER ATE!! We had a chicken burrito with green chile that my husband and I shared. It was AWESOME and totally filled us up. My daughter and mom shared the full order of chicken nachos and left with 1/2 uneaten. The also said how GREAT the nachos were. This place is a MUST TRY.
google avatar

Yuliya K.

Yelp
Everything from the host greeting to check out was very poor. The host has zero communication skills. Food was late and nothing special. Took forever to get our food. A typical tourist trap.
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
They sat our party of 5 at a table that would have been small for 4. I realize I could have asked for a bigger table but it was increasingly irritating as the giant cups arrived and we barely had enough room to pass out silverware. The tacos were just ok & the carne asada burrito was no better than your typical strip mall chain burrito spot. The stand outs were hands down the 24 hour carnitas nachos & the beef sticky sesame bowl. It wasn't a horrible experience and our server was very pleasant but I wouldn't come back for anything more than a cocktail & appetizer.
google avatar

Taylor M.

Yelp
This is my second time coming here. Both times I've been very pleased. The service was swift and the ambiance is great. The restaurant is right on the water. I had the Brussels which were great and the shrimp taco was good too. I don't love how their tacos come on an open face pita, however they are big tacos that will fill you up!
google avatar

Riddhika J.

Yelp
BEST IN VAIL! Since past 4 years, its our yearly tradition to go to Vail and enjoy a wonderful meal at El Segundo. And let me tell you that I haven't been disappointed once. The views from the patio are breathtaking and servers are very friendly. We have tried most of their menu and my absolute favorites are their veggie fajitas, Baja fish Tacos and their quesadillas! Their delicious drinks are delicious!! Just a tip, join the waitlist as soon as you get to vail because it could take anywhere between 30 mins to 2 hours to get the table. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND TRYING THIS PLACE!
google avatar

Erica E.

Yelp
Service was fast and friendly. The view from the outdoor patio over the water was awesome. The tacos are somewhat small but very tasty! Best $4 I've ever spent on chips and salsa and they even refilled the salsa for free.

Trey T.

Yelp
I ordered the fajitas, which frankly, I wouldn't do again. The meat was overly spiced and very tough. The tacos however, are very good. The guacamole and queso were excellent. The wait staff was super and the venue was also great. Margaritas also pretty darn good and they've got some additional tequilas if you're after something in particular.

Weston W.

Yelp
One of the best Mexican restaurants I've ever been to, 5 star service and food. The ambiance is dimmed lights, big portions, quaint atmosphere but amazing quality authentic food.

Bonni H.

Yelp
Food was excellent we had multiple tacos and a carnitas bowl all were very good. Katherine is an awesome server very attentive and kind. We also had a skinny margarita (slim shady) delicious. Would definitely recommend this place and the food and view :))
google avatar

Katie K.

Yelp
Would love to give 0 stars if I could. Swung by El Segundo around 5:45 on a Wednesday (at the time they were around 50% capacity) to place a to-go order for our family of 13. The hostess rudely said they will not take our order because they have a waitlist of over 150 and have to prioritize those customers over us. Very disappointed in the attitude of the employee and won't be returning.
google avatar

Zach M.

Yelp
Not awful not really good - stale chips , guac was decent though - tacos ok, but pretty bland. Fajitas were also bland and not great but it was good cuts of meat. Would prefer to give 2.5 star Automatic 3% gratuity added then the top options default to 25% and lowest goes to 22% - kind of annoying - overall pretty mid I prefer my own cooking Good protein tho tbh hard to find in vail
google avatar

Ricardo B.

Yelp
They have two locations, one in vail and one in Eagle. We went to the vail location. Fun, energetic, trendy but also casual Mexican food with some Asian and American style mixed in for fun and flavor. The bar has a huge assortment of tequilas. I highly recommend the purple rain which featured mezcal, prickly pear, lime, serrano, citrus liqueur topped with sparkling water and a tajin rim. For meal, we had the smothered carne asada burrito which consisted of grilled flatiron steak, spanish rice, refried pinto beans with smoked pork, pico de gallo, red chili sauce, melted cheddar and Monterey Jack. We also tried three of their tacos: Nash Vegas: southern fried chicken, spicy chili oil, creamy slaw, dill pickle; the 24 hour carnitas which was outstanding; and their Baja style crispy cod taco. One of the features of the restaurant that I truly enjoyed was the colorful over the table lamps throughout the restaurant. Great food and I'm sure we will be back on our next trip to vail. Service was prompt, friendly. The waiters were wearing restaurant tshirts that featured funny quotes also.

Dan B.

Yelp
Unfortunately the chicken burrito I had was not good at all. The meat was not fresh and tough. So can't recommend this place; won't be back.
google avatar

Anthony W.

Yelp
Service and margaritas are the highlight here. The staff is helpful and enthusiastic. Drinks are well made and fun. The venue is vibrant and always has a great energy. The food is consistently ok. It's well done but could be of higher quality. Always enjoy stopping in but I wish the food input quality was a touch better. And I'm talking from the chips, to salsa, meat to the other core components. One fun asset they have are all the hot sauces you can pick from to "sauce" up your food. I discovered a tasty habanero sauce there that I still use at home!
google avatar

Lori W.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my lunch at El Segundo. I tried the spicy margarita with chips and salsa, guacamole, and queso to start. All of which were great. Then I had the sticky rice bowl with Korean wagyu beef. It was more of an Asian dish than Mexican but I loved it. The service was great and the place was pretty busy at lunchtime, but not extremely loud.
google avatar

Anita R.

Yelp
Decent food, great staff, quick service , happy vibes , cool atmosphere. I did not like my drink the bartender gladly made me another one and did not charge for the one I did not like. Tacos were great.
google avatar

Christa R.

Yelp
Amazing food!! We dined here for the first time and are kicking ourselves for not dining here sooner! The food was phenomenal! We had the ahi poi tacos, chorizo queso, Korean bbq taco, double decker ground beef taco, Philly cheesesteak taco, chicken taco, carne asada burrito and seasoned fries. Even the refried beans were delicious! The Korean bbq taco is a must!! Service was great. Food came out promptly. It was a Saturday night and a bit crowded so it was loud. We would probably skip the chorizo queso next time only because it was so much food for 3 people - lol!!
google avatar

Tess W.

Yelp
My husband and I shared the chicken fajitas. They did not come out sizzling like in Texas and the chicken was not fresh at all. The bell peppers and onions tasted fresh. The tortillas were cold. Disappointed with the meal overall. We asked for chips and salsa and was charged $5. The salsa was delish! Would love to bottle and take back to Texas. We did love the outdoor seating near the creek.
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
The location is fantastic, in both winter and summer. It's right off Gore Creek so if you're visiting in the summer and sit outside, you can enjoy the sounds of the water. I had high hopes for El Segundo after visiting the owners' other restaurant Mountauk (five star review coming soon for that one). El Segundo feels like it wants to be the "hot spot" its website proclaims it to be more than it wants to be a great restaurant. I'm sure it's a big party place during ski season, or busier weeks than the one we visited in during the dead period between skiing and summer mountain access starting. Our server was really bad, so that didn't help. I will say that a different server named Michael attending to the two tables surrounding ours seemed like he was awesome, so we just sat there wishing he was handling our table. Food-wise, I love spicy food, but the Spicy Tuna Ceviche was spicy to the point that it was difficult to taste the tuna. It was absolutely drowned in their sauce. We also had the chicken bowl and a burrito. They were nothing to write home about; a bit over cooked and dry on the chicken side, not really anything to differentiate the meal from any other average tex-mex restaurant. Drinks were also hit or miss; had a great mezcal margarita, had a regular one as well that tasted like it was completely mix. They do have a wide variety of tequilas and some mezcals so if you're doing straight up or on the rocks, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Wow! What an awesome restaurant. We have been coming to Vail several times a year for 8 years and only visited El Segundo on this most recent visit, and boy are we mad we haven't come sooner. This is now our favorite spot in all of the mountains. The food is freaking DELICIOUS! They have some Asian fusion along with the Mexican staples and they nail every ingredient and combination on the menu. The Korean BBQ taco is amazing, the carnitas burrito is top notch, the fajitas are massive and delicious, and both bowls are unique and amazing. Every single thing that we ordered was simply massive portions, which in Vail is far from the norm. If you get the nachos make sure to have 3+ people because those things are huge. Everything on the menu is well worth the price. The service is really good with friendly and helpful staff. We came with our newborn and they bent over backwards to make sure we were set up so that we were comfortable. The ambiance was really cool too with a fun bar, great lighting and a perfect location on the creek. I cannot suggest this place enough and it will for sure be a staple of our eating whenever we're here.

Hugo R.

Yelp
While visiting the area and celebrating Father's Day, we found this place on the magazine and decided to try it. We ordered 4 different kids of tacos ( asada, carnitas, baja style, and shrimp) and they were delicious. The queso fundido as an appetizer was also delicious. Highly recommend it if you are in the area.

Shannon R.

Yelp
My friends and I came here after work and it was a great time. Food was absolutely delicious! The mahi taco with the mango salad is a must. The service was great. Our drinks were delicious. We had the watermelon cocktail. It's perfect for summer and also the Mariposa drink was delicious. We will be back soon.
google avatar

Yasi P.

Yelp
Their steak bowl is delicious !!!! Ambiance was great. Perfect for families. Service was great!
google avatar

Lindsay R.

Yelp
Wow is all I can say about this little restaurant. I will first say if you are here you must get the chips, salsa and cheese dip. I have never had such delicious needs dip (in picture) it was so creamy. My fiancé and I ordered a few different tacos to try. The tuna tacos had a nice Asian kick to them. This is such a good restaurant. The tacos only come with 1 taco though and they are roughly $9 a piece. However this really filled us up. I was skeptical that we would still be hungry after we ate. The inside was an upscale Mexican type joint. Much different than the ones I'm familiar with back home. The service was very fast. Try this place out! We received multiple recommendations and it's worth it.

Anil V.

Yelp
Amazing Tacos & the best Churros I've ever eaten. The nachos chips basket was cold with no cheese or jalapeno.

Peter B.

Yelp
Service was excellent. For the price point and Vail factor, I think the tortillas should be home made. The store bought tortillas at least need to be heated up, not bag to plate. Food was pretty good. Korean taco was really good but weak tortilla. Fun atmosphere and again, the service was superb so felt ok with the assumptive 25% tip.
google avatar

Merritt V.

Yelp
Excellent food. Excellent margaritas. Great location in Vail. This is a great place!

Sonia K.

Yelp
You must go here! We loved El Segundo and would go back again in a heartbeat! Our hotel made us a reservation here and we were so glad they did. The customer service was absolutely phenomenal. Our waiter was kind and extremely knowledgeable, even bringing us an extra side of avocado when our spicy tuna ceviche did not have as much as we would've liked. We ordered the chips and salsa with several refills. It was great and my warning is that the salsa is spicy. We got some virgin drinks- was very nice of the waiter to help us find things we could get. Lastly, we got the fajitas and a few of the tacos. We ordered a few tacos based on what our waiter said was most popular. We personally did not like the Korean BBQ taco but we loved the ahi, yardbird, and birria tacos.
