"El Sombrero is a magical place where plates are filled from edge to edge with delicious Mexican food, and even the “small” frozen margaritas come in massive goblets. We like the chile rellenos, anchiladas, and burritos here, and you’ll probably find it hard not to eat eight baskets of the fresh tortilla chips." - Aimee Rizzo

"MB has always had a solid offering of low-key Mexican joints, but for us, nothing beats El Sombrero. Only a five minute walk from the beach, this 40-year-old staple has cheap prices, a nice little dining room, and the kind of old-school Cali/Mexican food you want after throwing your body against waves all afternoon. We’re talking enchiladas, chile rellenos, and all the burritos your surfer soul can handle." - Jess Basser Sanders

If you feel hungry and have a limited budget...head up to El Sombrero! Portions are generous and well priced. The options are somewhat limited but believe me, they mastered what they are cooking. There are two options, Peruvian or Mexican dishes. I recommend Peruvian, there are plenty of other Mexican restaurants around but not that many Peruvian, and most certainly not of the quality food you will find here. A little downer, the servers only care for people that seem to be regulars. To all the others, they leave the menu on the table, come back to take your order and layer for the payment. Try asking about the dishes in the menu and you will find out that they are clueless. If they would do it with a smile, you might be okay but in my 39 minutes at the restaurant I didn't see them being amicable to any other people that to those they knew. Overall, worth visiting!

Every thing was great except some off my maduros were not ripe enough so they lost a star. The cevice was extra good so they get the star back. We also had the red fruit drink which is super sweet. I could have done without it. The grilled fish was cooked perfect but next time I'll ask they go light on the salt.

My favorite spot for ceviche and Peruvian food! Service is always friendly, food is always delicious and plentiful. I’ve never left unsatisfied.

I ordered Tallarín Saltado de Mariscos and sopa de pollo for my little one, who is overcoming a cold. While my Spanish isn’t perfect, I know what I ordered. The total came to $30, which seemed a bit high, but I paid and tipped $5. When I opened the bag, I received arroz chufa de pollo instead of sopa de pollo. I understand this could have been a miscommunication, the owner kindly brought me the correct order and took back the rice. Thank you! 🙏 However, my main concern was with the Tallarín Saltado de Mariscos. It had barely any seafood, and it was clear that the seafood was frozen, as it didn’t taste fresh at all. I was really disappointed to pay $16 for essentially seafood-flavored noodles. The soup was $9, yet I was still charged $30. I believe I was owed $5 back, but I didn’t feel like arguing and chose to let it go. I can’t speak on the quality of the soup. We waited so long and at this point my little one ate what we had. Overall, this experience was disappointing, and I hope the quality improves in the future.

Great spot to eat while on Bergenline Avenue and you want to get a bite to eat for Lunch or Dinner. Staff is friendly and food is great. Prices are fair and everyone inside was very nice and helpful with the menu. Parking is mostly on Bergenline Avenue and is paid parking but there is always parking available for all those who visit the location. I recommend this location for everyone who is in the area of Guttenberg, NJ and looking to have some amazing food while visiting. Peter S. Magran PhD. Yelp
I've found my new favorite restaurant! Thank you Yelp! Great service, food, and beer selection. I had a chicken burrito and my son got a skirt steak which we shared. The quality of the food was excellent and was very flavorful. The waiter and manager were both very friendly and checked up on our table multiple times. Food came out relatively quick and was cooked to perfection, would highly recommend to all.

Yelp
I went during lunch hour. Food for lunch special was so delicious and came out extremely fast! Best lunch special in the area - can't beat the price and the drink is included!!!

Yelp

Yelp
Good food a lil expensive. The tacos are ok the sides are very small I got goat ones and only got 4 piece like half of a plantain

Yelp
Really good peruvian food is hard to find. Try the arroz con mariscos norteño and ceviche

Yelp
I came across this place by accident. I'd never heard of this place before but still gave it a chance. And boy, let me tell you that it was the best decision I made that day. It is a small place with a few tables. Their service is good and the atmosphere is just plain and simple but beside all that their food is amazing. It taste great, it's fresh, it's clean, it's worth it. I ordered the Lomo Saltado and the Leche de Tigre ceviche and it took me straight to tastebuds heaven!!! I was not disappointed at all. Yes, I will definitely keep going back for more. I recommend this place.

Yelp
I love the food at El Sombrero, their daily $6 special is a great deal. It includes an appetizer (the ceviche is delicious!), entree and a drink. The hosts are great, they definitely give off a nice family vibe, which goes great with their home cooked meals.

Yelp
Amazing Peruvian and Mexican food, tasty and cozy spot. Come after a day in the spa!

Yelp
Chaufa was D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S!!! I really enjoy coming to this place!!! The staff is helpful :)

Yelp
I didn't know what to expect when I wandered into the location 69 and bergenline, but this spot quickly caught my eye I'm glad it did as the ceviche here was excellent and the hospitality matched up. The first ceviche l tried (mixed seafood) was fresh and had plenty of spice, just as I was hoping for (they made it extra spicy per request). Because we didn't know that portion so big we decided to indulge ChaoFao Mariscó was a great recommendation by very friendly and knowledgeable Eufemia and see food sop it's to die for! Im so glad that I leave around aria and will certainly be in the rotation when l make it or order delicious food delivery! They also have a full bar! we try very rich sangria! Everything was delicious! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Not sure if the owner of this establishment has changed but I've been here about twice from what I recall from my memory. My first time was about 3 years ago, which from what I remember, was great! The portion of food for the arroz chuafa was enough to share it with up to three people ( depending on how much each gets ). I had also gotten the ceviche, where both plates were extremely delicious! The second time was recent, some days ago, where I had called in a pick up for their daily special, which included a snack of corn nuts, ceviche appetizer, daily special entree, and a small juice all for $6. I cannot stress how incredible the meal was for just $6. It was tasty and fulfilling. Truly recommend this location if you're in the area!

Yelp
Horrible experience: I ordered one order of fried shrimp at 8pm, by 9:30pm the food hadn't arrived yet, so I called them, the lady who picked up the phone had terrible manners, she said they couldn't cancel the order because it was out already, that if by the time gets to my house tje food was jcold, so then I could cancel the order, and she hung up on me!!.. at 10:10 the delivery guy called me saying he was outside, by that time I was on my way to work. So uncourteous, not professionals, and they did not refund my money, I had to file a claim in my bank. Be very careful with this place.

Yelp
This is a really good Peruvian spot!! Like you need to come in here if you haven't. Idk if they changed the chef, because before the food was mediocre, now it's definitely a whole lot better! First off plate sizes are huge. You need to come with an appetite if not get ready to take your left overs home. Second, whatever you order here just know you're gonna get a good palate of flavor. The fajitas, burritos, carnes asada, mole, even the soups they're rich in flavor and you can taste fresh ingredients being used. The seafood here is a MUST! If you are a seafood lover this is the plCe for you, the ceviche is out of this world. Third, the prices are super reasonable. For the amount of food that you're getting and probably what you won't be able to finish I think the $$ amount is more than good. Delivery wise they're pretty fast except on the weekends cause they do get a good amount of service so just be wary of that. Solid place though to eat and one of the better Peruvian spots I've been too.

Natasha L.

Yelp
The ceviche is the most remarkable dish on their menu. It's so fresh and delicious. Their lunch specials cost $6 and it includes a choice of ceviche or soup, a drink and the main course. The portions are large and at that price, it's a fantastic deal.

Yelp
I have tried to order 3 times by reference of this place. I cannot believe the way I have been treated every time I call this place. The lady that picks up the call is so unprofessional because she will hang up on you if you ask her about the daily menu. The delivery came by my job and did not drop the food because he did not wanted to go to the 4th floor. The third time, I call thinking all that was over and someone else will handle my order, but no... Same disgraceful lady and called me "picky" because I didn't want onions on my food and started talking about me while making the order. I WILL NOT ORDER FROM THIS NASTY PLACE AGAIN!

Claudita C.

Yelp
Horrible! I never got to try the food. My coworkers and I ordered lunch around 11:40am after an hour the food hadn't arrived. I called they said the food was on its way this was at 12:50. We waited and called again the lady on the phone hand up on us twice when we ask her about it. Then we called one more time around 2:00 pm they said you guys are not the only customers, the food is on its way over 2 hrs!!!!!!!! The restaurant is on 69 st and Bergenline and we are located on 70 st and Blvd east a few blocks away!!!! Never again!!!!!!!!!!!! The person that answers the phone is rude and very unprofessional!

Maria R.

Yelp
Very disappointed with delivery service order was placed 11:00am. When we had not received our food we called then we were told that deliveries did not start until 1230. So we got our food at 130pm and my ceviche was warm my food was cold and my soda was hot. Whom ever packed the food was not mindful of placing things that are supposed to be cold together and as such for hot foods. Okay we ordered the specials to try out the food and use it in the future as a lunch option. As for me this is a wrap Sincerely Hungry and disappointed

Yelp
Been here several times and never disappoints. Always welcomed with a generous portion of Chips and salsa, along with two other spicey sauces and tostado. We ordered the triple combinations of tacos, enchiladas and burrito. So goooood! Generous portions will have you sitting in your chair gasping for air. Would recommend this mom & pop place to everyone!

Yelp
Waiting almost two hours for two plates of rice with no follow up calls. If you want your food COLD, come to this place. Service not good.

Marcus L.

Yelp
Took a chance on this place because it was close by and definitely regret it. I ordered the pollo guisado menú which i've eaten a hundred times at many different places. I was really hungry and ate less than half of the plate because of how bad it was. chicken was very dry and had a few mushy green beans on top. guisado had zero flavor and was almost a water consistency. sopa de lentejas was also basically water and had zero flavor with barely any lentils. There are so many great restaurants on Bergenline- This was an insult to the delicious Peruvian food that I've had at other places. My waitress was so pushy to get me out that she grabbed my plate without asking. The woman who was in charge called a customer malcriado for sitting in the wrong seat. Will NEVER be back here again!

Yelp
This place is my lunch time MVP!! Fan # 1!! My co-worker reccomended this place to me when I asked her about good peruvian in the area and she couldnt stop talking about this place and their lunch specials. For $6 you get an ice cold delicious purple drink (cinnamon and fruity taste) called chicha morada, an appetizer (ceviche, soup, salad or huancaina potatoes) and the entree which you can choose from 5 options each day and the 5 options are actually different each day (they have like a monthly menu rotation going on) so you get to always try something new!! Can you believe all that for $6? Seasonings are on point and food comes out quick and steaming hot!! A must try in the area!

Yelp
I love their sauted loin, good location, im not a lover of cantina songs, but the place is neat and clean, if you are looking to have a lot of food, as latin american, this may be the place that you are looking for, they have affordable prices, and daily specials for lunch, so if your are working through the week it can be really helpfull...

Yelp
Food is decent, you can probably get better and more authentic a few blocks away in union city..the service is absolutely slow... When I was there all the tables were seated and no one had any food. The plus part are the "menu" service for 7$

Maria C.

Yelp
Great little restaurant. Chips and salsa very fresh and the food very filling. The portions are very big but so good.

Yelp
El Sombrero, part PERUVIAN / PART MEXICAN, located on corner of 69th Street, and Bergenline Ave in West New York, appears CLOSED at times due to the lighting, even with a neon lit OPEN sign. This place, has the BEST CEVICHE I ve ever tasted, our favorite, CEVICHE MIXTO. Service starts good, getting the check at times takes getting up and asking for it due the place being so busy. And if you like PISCO SOUR, DEFINITELY order it, GOOD COMBO with SPICY (optional) CEVICHE MIXTO, also the BEST PISCO SOUR we've had. OVERALL, the BEST CEVICHE MIXTO in our TRI STATE area of NY-NJ-CT. Enjoy. -MnA

Yelp
This is the type of place you don't want to step into if your not a hardcore spicy food lover, me and a friend order the shrimp ceviche and some chorizo tacos. Everything we order but ( the beer) had a common denominator, ( tasteless ). The meat had little to no seasoning whatsoever and all they offer you to season them is hot sauces, it's like the people that would go there regularly had already lost their taste buds sensitivity and all they can taste is the heat from the hot sauce that by the way was made in house and only tasted like burnt habanero chiles, this is a place that I would not recommend to anyone that still has some taste buds alive.

Angel R.

Yelp
Please stop doing the ceviche with milk ,I can't take this anymore all the Peruvian reataurants doing this why really don't know, ceviche peruano es sin leche senores please

Yelp
Was in the area and decided to check them out. 4 people working the front! Not very friendly horrible attitude. No body spoke English !!! Very rude. Asked for parajuela no msg to go. Got home it is full of MSG!!! I now feel sick and hope I don't end up in the hospital. Never again!!!!!

Yelp
My first time at El Sombrero and the last one. First, the waiter didn't give the menu. I ordered a burrito. It didn't has taste at all and was loaded with cheese inside and on top-like a quesadilla or pizza. I have never seen a burrito like that. The pico the gallo was just onions.Chips and salsa were good and fresh. Only one person was nice, the young woman taking orders on the phone, the rest weren't nice at all, not friendly not polite. I won't recommend this restaurant and I won't go back either.
