Here are the best dishes eaten in July 2024 by Eater Detroit contributors | Eater Detroit

"A taqueria standout for its barbacoa taco, made by David Salazar using a modern sous-vide technique to slow-cook a blend of seasoned chuck roast, short rib, and beef cheek for 24–36 hours, resulting in juicy, deeply flavored meat amplified by one of four signature in-house salsas and served on a warm corn tortilla." - Eater Staff

Google
Tried the steak fry-chos—pretty solid! The steak was flavorful and the fries were crispy, but it definitely needed the salsa to bring it all together. They did forget the guac, which was a bummer, but overall still tasty. Would go back, just double-checking my order next time!

Google
El Taco Dojo, my new favorite food stop. Craving some good street tacos, I followed the reviews here, and they did not disappoint. The food here is absolutely delicious! I've tried the chicken, steak, pulled pork, and grilled pork tacos so far; and I honestly can't pick a favorite, just sooooooooo good. Seriously, whether a burrito, Dojowrap, Taco, quesadilla, or a simple side of rice, you can't go wrong. I also need to add that I have a ridiculous amount of food allergies/sensitivities, and I'm so delighted to say that I had NO reactions at all after eating here. They did a fantastic job avoiding cross contamination by keeping their open kitchen work area clean, and visibly wearing gloves when handling any food. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side, but it has a great vibe. I love the art on the walls. There is some indoor seating available, so you can dine-in or take out, and the parking lot has plenty of room. I will note that did not happen to see a public restroom available, but I also did not happen to ask either. I need to mention that the employees themselves are great! Patient while you make choices, offering suggestions if asked, helpful with making alterations for special diets, and overall just friendly, great guys. I highly recommend you stop by and have a meal from El Taco Dojo, and I have a feeling they will be seeing a lot of my family and I from now on.

Google
Superb taco spot with the most flavor I've been delivered in a hot second. Really enjoyed the specialty tacos and torta powered up with their in house sauces. These guys go above and beyond to bring a solid menu at a great price. You would be missing out if you aren't making a spot in here.

Google
We were craving tacos and thought we would try this when we saw the reviews. It does not disappoint. Tried all the usual fare. Great seasoning on everything. Just what you want from tacos/burrito/quesadilla/etc, but somehow just a little better. Would have given the service more than five stars if possible. Also love the angry nacho mural. This is a new favorite - highly recommend!

Google
Absolutely phenomenal. Reminds me of back home in San Diego. Great food, affordable prices, and the guys who run it are super friendly. Their homemade chips have something extra, the salsa is made in house and real legit. Couldn't give this place higher praise. All around, an ace in the hole.

Google
Amazing food, great prices but the best part was the customer service. They are genuinely all great guys including the chef. They all checked on us, asked how the food was and thanked us for coming in. Very great experience all around highly recommend

Google
Matt, Mike and Damacio made the best tacos and egg rolls (cactus and carnitas), especially with the pineapple salsa. They were delicious! Will definitely be back again to try more of the menu.

Yelp
So Yummy!! Everything is freshly made. We got the Barbacoa quesadilla and tacos (2 Barbacoa, 1 carnita) meals. Comes with chips and salsa or guacamole. There's also salsas on the side to try. Definitely will return!

Yelp
I got the nopales cactus tacos with all the toppings and it was so fresh UGH so good. It's street taco style which i like and the fresh tomatoes and cilantro on top made it. and of course a spritz from the lime wedge. i got the size of chips and salsa and the salsa tasted fresh as well. I did however forget to order and grab a drink from the fridge so this is your heads up. they had some sauces/salsas on the counter to try too and those were good. My friends which got chicken tacos, a barbacoa wrap, rice and beans all say it was great and we'd go back. The staff was nice and checked in on us during the meal even though it wasn't a server type restaurant. that was a nice touch. we came on a saturday before a concert at michigan lottery and two other parties came in later on. can't wait to come back!

Yelp
After moving to the area, I make a list of places that I wanted to try, and El Taco Dojo made the list. My husband and I stopped in to grab some lunch. Immediately upon entry, I was slightly turned off. The dining area was dirty and dingy. And the person taking the orders seemed to be having a rough go at life, with a bit of a snap in their tone. We ordered our food to-go, which took about 10 minutes or so. The kitchen area looked cleaner than the dining area, thankfully. When we got home, we ate our tacos. They were alright. The chips were delicious. They do have a selection of four different salsas to choose from, which I enjoyed. I love supporting local, however, not sure if I will be back.

Yelp
Grabbed two 3 taco plates for my team member and me. Mine with 3 chicken tacos, side of chips and guacamole, side of beans. Second one was one chicken, one beef, one pastor and side of chips and guacamole. $34.98. The condiments are lettuce, cilantro, onion, tomatoes. The chips were decent, crunchy and seasoned. The guacamole was also pretty good lots of red onions and flavorful and fresh. The chicken tacos were damaged. I had some fatty and Sie pieces and my three tacos. The refried beans were decent, whole beans still intact in it. A bit dry though. My team member enjoyed their pastor, pork, chicken and beef as well, chips and salsa too.

Yelp
Burrito Bowl (Grilled Chicken) I ordered 5 bowls-family of 5 adults; can make this a two day meal-first time visitor; I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Popped in while my son was at the dentist next door. Shared a barbacoa quesadilla and chips and salsa. It was AMAZING! Highly recommend

Yelp
Was greeted warmly. The place is kind of dingy and dirty. The steak burrito I got was actually very good, but honestly it was super pricey. Probably won't go again unless they do lunch specials. Their combos were in the $teens! I can get 2 tacos rice and beans and a pop for $8 at Amigos Street Tacos.

Yelp
Yup, this place lives up to the hype. The steak tacos were great but the chicken quesadilla was even better. They aren't skimpy with the meats. The house made chips, guacamole, and salsas were all great too! Super easy to order online and it was ready and packaged nicely when I got there a few minutes early

Yelp
This is an epic place for amazing Mexican street food. Everything we had was great but, there were a couple of things that were truly exceptional. When give a place 5* on Yelp, that signifies the restaurant is a destination...worth going out of your way to get this food. There is so much to like about El Taco Dojo. 1) everything is house made. The ingredients are fresh and delicious 2) the dudes that run the joint take a great deal of pride in what they do. They were excited to talk with us about their menu items and quick to share samples of before we ordered. 3) portions sizes were generous 4) the salas, my goodness were they fantastic. The pineapple habanero in particular was amazing. I added it to my Al pastor taco and it was perfection 5) they may serve the best basket of chips and guacamole in metro Detroit. As I said, every thing is house made, chips included. They were nice and crispy with a great seasoning blend, they certainly didn't come from a bag 6) their elote is great. I usually don't like mayo based foods but this was well balanced with lime that gave some nice counter to the richness of the mayo 7) all 3 of the proteins I tried, Barbacoa, Al pastor and chorizo were great. May have been the best chorizo I've ever had Macomb county is over run with mediocre Meh-xican restaurants that serve up flavorless, Americanized junk. It's so exciting to have an alternative that serves great, well crafted Mexican food. Now that I've tried it...I know I'll be back...often

Yelp
They were so welcoming and quick. We ordered to-go and walked out less than 5 minutes later. I orderd the barbacoa tacos, honestly top tier. My bf got a burrito, which was also great! Finally, it is super cute inside, and such a great atmosphere!

Lydia B.

Yelp
My bf and I do not like corn tortillas but we still ordered and they were AMAZING. Will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
El Taco Dojo is mainly a carryout restaurant with limited seating. The food is fresh and excellent. The owners are friendly and service is fast. I've had the Dojo Wrap Carnitas Combo. Yum! And it's huge. They have many options plus the ubiquitous 3 Taco Combo or à la carte items. They offer Taco Bowls, Quesadillas, Mexican Egg Rolls, Tortas and Burritos. They've been there a year, and I just found out about them. Wish I had known sooner. I will be frequenting often. Best thing they are only 3 minutes away!

Lisa B.

Yelp
Fantastic!! My daughter and I are absolutely hooked. The customer service is very friendly and courteous. Five stars all the way!

Tommy V.

Yelp
My wife and I tried this for the first time And we're highly impressed. I'm assuming it was the owner that greeted/helped us and he was welcoming and helpful. We both got their version of the Crunchwrap, one asada and one chicken. Both were spectacular give me 14 of em. The side of chips and guac were also delicious. I personally wasn't a fan of the salsas provided on the front counter but everyone has their own taste My wife gave it a 10/10. We're excited to come back and try some other menu items!

Tracy A.

Yelp
The food was good excellent. Generous portions and the elote was wow every part of my nachos was delicious. Definitely going back

Mike D.

Yelp
Fantastic spot! Tried 4 different tacos and the egg rolls. Everything was amazing. Staff is super friendly and helpful as well!

Yelp
I'd give this place ZERO stars if I could ONLY because of the lack of integrity of the man my husband & I spoke with this evening. My was looking forward to trying the food because my husband said it was pretty good. We ordered online & I ordered the cactus bowl with EXTRA cheese. When my husband brought it home my bowl was a COMPLETELY different order. It was a veggie bowl instead with NO cheese. My husband called in & spoke with a man who said "Oh well, we're out of cactus." Okay, so then instead of mentioning that to the customer you're going to give them something YOU rather them have? My husband responded "It would've been nice to know that before I left. That's the whole reason why my wife ordered it & she's allergic to meat." The man DID at least offer a refund...HOWEVER, I got on the phone & I asked the man, "isn't a cactus bowl more expensive than veggie bowl even with extra cheese?" He responded "No, they're the same price. Well, either he doesn't know the prices of his items or he's a straight up LIAR because the MENU STATES OTHERWISE. I then mentioned that I also ordered extra cheese only to get NO cheese. He then began arguing stating "impossible, there HAS TO BE cheese on it!" I said "Just like there HAS to be cactus on it as well, but there isn't & we weren't made aware of it, just charged for it & given something cheaper?" I ended up just giving the phone back to my husband at that point. I will give them the benefit of the doubt...if they DID put Cheese on it it was so minimal to where I'd probably would've been able to count the shreds...this is my EXTRA CHEESE. So, after being scammed & called a LIAR...here's the pics EVERYONE!

Yelp
The food is way better than any Mexican restaurant in Macomb county, bar none. Go try them.

Yelp
Love the choice of salsa and the small containers to use. My wife and I got a few things all the food was great. She got the chicken quesadilla with chips and salsa and I got the steak burrito with rice and beans. They come with drinks as well and can upgrade to bigger drink for $1 and we got peppers and onions for $1 more each and it was worth it. Sorry no pictures but online is very accurate. Worth a stop and the money and will be back. The service was very nice and answered all our questions and offer more chips as well.

Kelli H.

Yelp
So delicious! We had the nachos which were huge, and easy to share. The chips are seasoned, and the toppings were fresh. It was sooooooo good!! Super friendly staff, and the price was right :)

Audrey N.

Yelp
Amazing tacos, saw tiktok video and realized was less then mile away. Tried grilled chicken tacos, my bf had steak tacos. We will be returning and quite often.

Vincent T.

Yelp
Do not order from here. Didn't even get a chance to put an order in because, the customer service was that rude. Sounded like the kind of place that would spit in your food just because they're having a bad day.

Fab L.

Yelp
This by far is the WORST service & tacos I ever had in Michigan. To top it off I waited a long time for my food when there was only one customer which ordered after me but got the same order fist & then I realize when finally eating it wasn't all the way cooked. They tried charging $5 more for my order walks away from register when ringing me up. I spoke with Patrick there which doesn't want to say the owners name so he won't be a aware. BEWARE OF THIS UNPROFESSIONAL OVERPIRCED PLACE for undercooked weak tacos you be charged $5 each for

Genieve J.

Yelp
The pork nachos was OK. The chicken and beef tacos had absolutely no type of flavor but peppers. The only thing that had a little flavor was the nachos cause of the seasoning on the chips was happy to get the food until I tasted the tacos. I went off the reviews, but never again.

Dominic P.

Yelp
Good food for sure. The amount you get is worth what you spend. The beans and rice are above average compared to other places. Wide wide variety of salsas for every taste.

Linda T.

Yelp
I hate to give a bad review bc the two young men who worked there were so extremely nice, and they kept apologizing for our wait (they were waiting on some rice to finish cooking) but the food really was terrible (in our opinion) and we'll never go back. The rice was Spanish style (not Mexican style) and was still slightly crunchy bc they were trying to finish cooking it as quickly as possible. I can't remember our entire order but the chips and salsa were terrible and the rest of the food was pretty awful as well. We only tried it bc the Yelp reviews were so glowing. They were either fake reviews or the people who left them have zero taste buds. The "dining room" was tiny and the tables needed cleaned. I waited to post this bc I really didn't want to leave a bad review (which is why I can't remember our entire order) but I didn't want someone to have a bad experience like we did. Needless to say, try at your own risk, and hopefully your experience is better than ours.

Jason K.

Yelp
This was my second trip here and will not be my last. The folks working are super friendly and answer any questions with a smile. They'll talk with you while making the food and you can tell they put pride in what they serve. I've only had the tacos but they are so worth it. Shredded steak, shredded chicken, pulled pork...each of these were amazing. All fresh ingredients and the shells were packed with meats, onion, cilantro, lettuce and then the sauce options are exceptional as well. There's some not spicy tomatillo which is good, a hot one that puts a nice tingle in your mouth, and my surprising favorite is a pineapple that just makes the flavor of the taco pop. There's an extra hot I didn't try and another I forget but these just add the little extra flavor to an already great taco. Also had chips and guacamole and these were freshly made there tasted great as well. There isn't a ton of seating inside but you don't feel crowded if you want to stay and dine in. If you want a quick taco with amazing flavors and super friendly staff you need to go here!
