A 3 star experience. Some things were great, some things were not, so 3 is where I'm landing on El Tacorrido. Service was fast & convenient through the drive-thru, but there were some hiccups on the service and the food was just okay overall.
Right off the bat, I was perturbed when they charged me 25 cents for a 3rd tiny 1 oz cup of salsa after I had ordered almost $40 of food including 2 platters, 4 tacos, an order of guac & chips, AND an order of queso blanco & chips. How do you not include at least 1 salsa per taco and per plate, not to mention with each order of chips? By that standard-at-any-other-taco-joint-in-Austin math, I should have gotten at least 8 salsas included with my order. Why nickle & dime me on this item when you had a chance to delight a new customer instead?
Next, they left out 1 of the tiny bags of chips I paid for, so I got home with 2 huge bowls of thick dips and about 10 chips to share among 3 people. Luckily, I had my backup pantry El Milagros to serve my hungry crew.
Other complaints? Well, the barbacoa was simply not well-rendered, with a downright chewy texture, not enjoyable and fairly disappointing for my barbacoa-loving family. Lastly, the papas fritas were floppy & greasy, as if steamed, with no crispy bits at all. I actually picked them out of the trays & threw them under the broiler at home to finish them myself.
You may be wondering, why isn't this a 1 star review? Well, it wasn't all bad. El Tacorrido must be stingy with those salsas because they are so dang tasty; I loved the flavors of all 3 and wished I'd had more. The guac was fresh & delicious, and the chilaquiles were wonderful. I liked that meal so much, I saved my leftovers to eat the 2nd half of it the following day. I also loved that they are serving their take-away food in sustainable containers, something I wish more restaurants would do. Finally, the lady at the drive-thru window was friendly & charming.
Will I return? Probably not unless I get a craving for chilaquiles. There are so many other great taco joints in this town, and none of my favorites charge me for salsa.
