Where to Find Denver’s Most Satisfying Mexican Food

"When maximum comfort calls, this cozy old-school fixture on South Broadway answers with an enormous menu that guarantees something for everyone — from raw oysters to liver and onions, menudo to myriad molcajetes, pozole to pork chops smothered in green chile, and huevos rancheros to enchiladas in mole. A full bar does its part to ease the mind as well." - Ruth Tobias, Eater Staff

The food was pretty good! Worth about $20? Maybe. The fajitas came out sizzling hot and tasted yum. Some of toppings—guacamole in particular—were lacking. I got a dab of guacamole fit for a children’s meal and would have liked more cheese. But I made it stretch. The service was okay but on the slow side and not super-attentive. The atmosphere was okay but was rather dated. Overall, not bad for a Mexican-food stop. I wouldn’t mind eating there again.

Google
Walking in, got seated right away, staff was super friendly. The only thing I didn't like was that the server took a little long to come over and take our order. I only say this because there was another table that sat down after us and they ordered before my table (2 people) and got their food before we ordered. But after we ordered the food was delicious and the server did stop by and asked if we needed anything. Really liked the portion size especially for how low they are charging.

The Masked Turnip

Google
You gotta love a traditional mexican restaurant. We came for breakfast. Lots of selections, I had the "Huevos Con Chorizo". Delicious. The serving size was generous, you will not leave hungry. They also have Menudo and Chilaquiles if you want to eat really authentic. Love the traditional decor (don't change anything). Love this place.

Google
Our weekly neighborhood place for several reasons: medium margaritas, shrimp enchiladas, steak fajitas, Modelo beer. The food menu is extensive and our Mexican friends find good food they like. It's close to our houses so it's a go-to for our usual group of 2 to 6. Last night we had our 4 regulars and something was wrong with the margaritas which they tried to fix with an extra shot of tequila which didn't help and it came in on our bill but when we asked that the shots be removed our regular waiter promptly removed those charges. We get in the car(s) at 6 and generally our cars just head there because it's very good and reasonable prices; it's one of our three go-to's for our weekly neighbor dinners.

Google
I took a friend there, first time we ever ate together. The service was really good, if you like it authentic Mexican environment it seem like this is a good place to eat at. And the food was wonderful.

Google
Five Stars - Hidden Gem! My wife and I had a great experience at El Tejado Mexican Restaurant. From the outside, you might not expect much, but once you step inside, it’s a whole different story—the interior is a solid 9 out of 10. It’s cozy, clean, and welcoming, a real hidden gem. I ordered the liver with onions, and I have to say, it’s one of the best liver dishes I’ve had since moving to Colorado. Perfectly cooked and full of flavor. My wife had the carne asada, which was also really good. The sides were fresh and delicious, and everything on the plate felt thoughtfully prepared. Highly recommend this spot if you’re looking for authentic Mexican food with great flavor and a warm atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back!

Google
The food was hot and fresh Fajitas came out steaming. Got 2 deluxe burritos one chicken one shredded beef. Atmosphere was good, service was attentive and fast. Only waited about 10-15 minutes for the food to come out. The tables were clean. Overall great experience!

Google
Pretty good spot with great food and even better margaritas! The only down side is that it was very busy and service took a little while. But other than that, our waitress was extremely nice! Definitely recommend their Carne Asada plate! Shrimp tacos were good but a little too sour for my liking.

Yelp
Meat is super tender. Enchiladas were perfect. Mexican hamburger seasoned perfectly and portions were big!!!

Yelp
El Tejado 2651 S Broadway, Denver, CO 80210 was highly recommended by my cousin, so of course I had to try it. The restaurant is an attractive stand alone building with good parking. Inside was nicely decorated with a full bar and plenty of booths and tables. I really liked how clean everything was and how all the employees were dressed in server uniforms. When I arrived with my group for breakfast around 11:30 AM, the restaurant was about 1/2, full but when we left, it was almost at capacity. I had the Huevos Rancheros, while the others had a Breakfast Burrito, and Huevos Divorciados. What can I say but excellent fresh home made food. It's really that good. The chips and salsa really hit the spot and having house made corn tortillas just added to the experience. The service was great! Everyone worked as a team. If you're in Denver CO I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this restaurant!

Yelp
Everything was really good. Very authentic. However, American-style crispy beef tacos are a little wet. Salsa is appropriately spicy. Service quick and impeccable. Seems to be a regular lunch spot. Bar and drinks are great.

Kathie C.

Yelp
This is a great Mexican restaurant. Today I had chili relleno soft and a cheese enchilada. Their margaritas were great not too sweet or too tart. The rice was moist and taste. Defenitely will be returning

Gustavo S.

Yelp
I being there 2 time and the two times, the dinner plates were nothing but rice and beans and plenty of sauce. I will not recommend this restaurant to anyone that is looking for a docent Mexican restaurant

Yelp
Food is always good, sometimes the wait is long (30-45 minutes), the wait is worth it though. I would recommend the carne asada burrito for first timers, definitely a great choice. the chili cheese fries are a great choice as well, always a go to. The ambiance is so welcoming, don't forget to

Tom M.

Yelp
Awesome food, awesome service! Great bar . and great green chile. Pro Tip: Pork chops and eggs smothered in Green Chile...
google avatar

Madison R.

Yelp
This place is always busy, so you know it's a good spot. Our regular orders are the molcajete and the fajitas, both of which have the perfect amount of spice. Their margaritas are delicious, but beware the medium size is huge. We love coming here on a Friday date night and grabbing a booth to enjoy the food and people watching.
google avatar

Shiela J.

Yelp
I have been coming to this spot for a few years now and they never disappoint. The house margaritas are great and they don't skimp on the tequila. Literally everything on their menu is great. My favorite is the camarones enchamarados other great things on the menu to try is the carnitas and the pozole. Service is always great, Veronica is one of the sweetest hosts there.

Yelp
We've been coming to El Tejado every time we've come to Denver. The restaurant is large, with a sizable parking lot and patio. It does tend to get crowded on weekends but we've generally never had to wait. Staff here is very friendly and efficient. The food is pretty usual Mexican fare, but we love the green chili here. El Tejado serves it thin more like a stew, and it's very tomato-y with very little meat. The chili packs some serious heat if you order it spicy, so beware! Food portions come pretty large, and the first chips and salsa is free for the table. All the burritos come smothered and have a healthy filling of protein and beans without too much filler. They serve massive margaritas here which look like a very popular option.

Bill K.

Yelp
The food is typical for any mexican restaurant. My review is one star because we discovered on our credit card bill that they gave an extra $2 tip they gave themselves. We have the receipt and checked the amount on the bill. This was our first time here and we won't be back. El Tejado..you steal from us and we remember. You lost 2 customers for good. Don't do that to your customers.

Yelp
Gen X Denver natives mecca to the motherland to see mother & eat Green Chile few times a year or as often as possible. The family go-to, no argument, has become disappointingly...vanilla. Finally someone said it out loud and a new family fave was born. Not new to Mile-high, but our collective new go-to. In town for Thanksgiving, nite before, expectedly busy. Miguel, our server, was A game ready on all fronts, excellent! The salsa was actually hot-so many table salsas are tomato paste & cumin so this spicy concoction was pleasant surprise. That being said it was too spicy for half our group. Margaritas & beers, all giant, cold & tasty.-maybe so giant to tame the fiery salsa. And the piece de resistance, a smothered bean burrito w/ Chicharrón, spot on, just wish I could eat more....this is such a family fave that half our party of 8 only savored only this. the molcajete dish was enjoyed by one of our group, awesome in presentation, quantity & taste-imagine a towering salsa bowl, a mosaic of flavors served steaming like fajitas. Tex-mex faves ie tacos & suiza style enchiladas de pollo all on point! Again Miguel, 5 to this guy! We will be back-just as soon as we can! Please keep the green chile perfect!

Yelp
El Tejado has been a staple along South Broadway for as long as I can remember. I have been visiting this family owned establishment for over 28 years. The parking lot is always full and the when you enter the restaurant, you are always greeted with a smile. The food is delicious and if you don't have the time to dine in, they offer to go, which is also good. They make all their food from scratch...right down to the tortillas. I like to try different items from their extensive menu. I have enjoyed all the menu choices thus far. On this visit I ordered the *Red Snapper Plate. This fish is traditionally served deep fried. On this particular day, the fish was so large that it fed the three of us, with additional orders of rice. The chicken fajitas and carne asada had to be boxed up to take home as we were full. The homemade corn tortillas were so good and now I can never eat store bought, again! The fish was fried just perfectly. It was still flakey and delicious. We drank horchata that was perfectly made. And ended our meal with a traditionally made flan. Be sure to ask for a side plate for your fish bones and extra napkins, as you will be using your hands to pull this fish apart. El Tejado also has menudo available daily, which makes it a super plus instead of having to wait till Saturday or Sunday like most other places. Their Pozole is out of this world and is so flavorful. It is often my go to. The waiters and waitresses are courteous and helpful. If you need to modify anything, just let them know and they are happy to accommodate. They have a bar and televisions throughout, so you won't miss a soccer or football game. As well, you can hear traditional Mexican music playing in the background. Give it a try, as I'm sure you will have something great to share with your friends and family. Or even something great to write about. *The Red Snapper Plate is sold at Market Price, so it may vary. Be sure to ask your server.

Yelp
Pozole is so delicious. Also the queso fundido with chorizo so good! This place is my go to for pozole!

Yelp
I recently moved back to Denver and have been looking for a good Mexican restaurant--my former go-to's are no longer in existence. I've had some pretty horrible Mexican food that was worse than Taco Bell. I am so glad I found El Tejado. The food was fresh (it will take a little longer to get to your table but that is a good thing), the margarita tasty, and it was all quite affordable. I will definitely be back.

Drew L.

Yelp
This place is pretty much exactly what you'd expect from a middle of the road Mexican restaurant. It's nice that they have complementary chips and salsa since less and less places have that now. The meals are standard Mexican fare and nothing stood out as particularly good or bad.(we had enchiladas and fajitas). It seems to stay surprisingly busy without feeling crowded, so they must have a good amount of regulars. Although we were seated quickly, the service was lackluster. They forgot our drink orders until we eventually flagged down a staff member to remind them. When I got the margarita it was large, but not particularly strong. And then when our meals came our waiter didn't bring the sides for the fajitas and said he would bring them soon so we shared the sides from the enchiladas until eventually we eventually had to remind them again to bring our sides. I think the decor was nice and it was pretty spacious. I think if I go back I would sit at the bar. They had a lot of TVs, so it would be a good place to watch a game, and I imagine the service would be better.

Sophia M.

Yelp
Great salsa, super spicy. The crispy chile rellenos are one of my favorite foods. The servers are always helpful and efficient.

Yelp
So so good!!! From the second I walked in I knew this would be authentic Mexican food. My partner's family lives close and go here all the time. I'm glad I finally got to enjoy El Tejado too! The fam said the salsa usually varies in spice level depending on the day, and this time it was just the right amount! I almost got full on chips before our food came- that's how you know it's good!! I got the Combo 6 and can't wait to eat the leftovers waiting for me. I'll be back!!!!

I've driven by countless times, but finally got a group together to go. The main two issues are as follows: - We had decided to try the queso as a table. It arrived to the table ice cold - basically like it was just scooped from a jar. Their queso is priced at $8.95 for reference. We requested to swap it out for some guacamole, and the waiter quickly took the untouched queso away and never brought the guacamole. - Out of the 6 people in the group 4 of us purchased margaritas. One of the four margaritas was frozen and came out sperated. The consistency was similar to movie theater queso that was left out in a theatre after a movie. We requested a margarita on the rocks, and our separated un-drinkable margarita was removed and replaced with a new one on the rocks. When we got our bill we noticed the queso and the margarita that were removed from our table we're still listed. The manager, Marcos came out to tell us the queso uses "fresh ingredients" and we could have asked to have it warmed. Also, the margarita sometimes separates when it's frozen. Due to their policy they can't remove the items - basically making it out like we were trying to eat and not pay for queso/Marg's (that were removed and not edible) Nine out of ten times when an issue is brought up with a server/management it is usually made right for the customer. There typically isn't a discussion about quality of ingredients or "policy". While the food was okay...if you feel the need to be talked down to about bringing up and issue with food then visit this establishment. For what it's worth the bathrooms were also in dis-array. By that I mean there are no paper towels and urine pools on the floor.

Yelp
Sooooo good! This restaurant has been added to my list of favorites. I knew I was going to a good one when I couldn't find parking. I got a bean burrito and the beans were so good. I also got a crispy chili relleno and the cheese inside was so meaty and yummy. The green chili and salsa were really good too. Basically I didn't have any dislikes. Will definitely recommend and be back.
google avatar

Claire K.

Yelp
Delicious. I get the smothered burrito but the chips, salsa and guacamole are good too!
google avatar

Trae G.

Yelp
Well Westwood awarded this place with the best green chili. Uh they were wrong!! Lol. It's not bad but definitely not the best. As other Rey have talked about the service is on point. Don't expect to see smiles or friendly face. The salsa has a good kick if you don't like spice then get queso. I got the shredded beef burrito Christmas style. It was good everything was good just not fast or friendly.

WC M.

Yelp
DY-No-MITE---- best green chile and breakfast in Denver for decades. Service is spectacular and menu options are all thoughtfully crafted. A local's favorite.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been trying to find a Mexican restaurant that has vegetarian red enchilada sauce. It's harder than you might think! This place was pretty good. The sauce wasn't very hot and while not my favorite (seemed a little creamy for some reason) it was better than many others I've had lately. And, I always want flour tortillas for my enchiladas instead of corn and some can't accommodate... but they did. Yay! I will say that the cheese inside wasn't melted which was a bummer. The best part was our waitress, Tania C. She was so on top of things and attentive. Thank you
google avatar

Yelp
Double thumbs up again since the last several times were super fun. The other time must have been an off night, cause we had a fabulous time with the beef fajitas for two. Yum!!!

Yelp
This was really disappointing. We used to go here all the time with my family. It was a real favorite. I stopped in with my kid. I ordered a dish that came smothered in green chili. I told the wait person I didn't ask for that. She argued with me back and forth saying I ordered it with green chili. It was really frustrating. I finally asked for the manager. He was not much better. The waitress kept saying, "what do you want, lady?" It may have been a language issue, but the arguing with me wasn't. I ended up with a side of carnitas (dry and flavorless), a side of guacamole (maybe half a cup for $5.95) and an extremely small side of chicharrones for another $5.95. My kid said the beans and rice were gross, and enchiladas were meh. Skip this one, yelpers. It used to be good but those days are gone. I should have remembered what my dad used to say, "Some things are best left as memories."

Nixon M.

Yelp
Great service, tasty food, amazing atmosphere! The waitress was very friendly and attentive, food was very well prepared, delicious and good balanced flavors (Carne Azada Plate) it's on my list of one of the best dining restaurants in Denver.

Carm L.

Yelp
On busy days the hostesses are hateful from the first interactions. The waitress who's named Narcedalia is very rude and will not serve you unless you tip her big. She won't even take an order for more than 20 minutes if you are there on a busy day. Management condones all the actions of the hateful hostessess and rude waitresses, they look at us native Coloradans as replaceable customers. We need to replace them!
google avatar

Eric G.

Yelp
Real Mexican food with real Mexican Ambience . I was super impressed considering a lot of other Mexican restaurants are mediocre when it come authentic food in Denver. The tortillas are homemade and the salsa is super fresh along with everything else I ordered had really great flavors. I will say however their Margaritas weren't the best I'm sure mainly because it was their house but it's not worth ordering. I'll be back however for the food for sure
google avatar

Vicki S.

Yelp
Absolutely Horrible worst people , rude hateful, order wrong , horrible couldn't chew steak told them and they brought a to go box said we had to pay for it. Haven't been anout 4 years will never go back again horrible. Awful place

Brody J.

Yelp
I recently went to El Tejado with a group friends very eager to eat! After eating here at El Tejado im very disappointed with the quality AND quantity of our food. I ordered a margarita pitcher to share between two and received a pitcher over half full of ice and got only 2 1/2 glasses of margarita. We ordered nachos as an appetizer for the table and were given 10 chips total with a scarce amount of cheese, meat and beans and was served luke warm. Entrees were no better! Very disappointing and I will not be returning! I spent way too much money for an absolute joke amount of food and alcohol.

Savannah G.

Yelp
It's within walking distance of my house so I always find myself here for comfort food. The staff is always so nice and of course the food is delicious.

Aspen F.

Yelp
Everything tastes really really bland, which is never what you want for Mexican food. I had to use a bunch of salt and pepper and even then the steak was so dry and chewy. The staff was great, but the food is awful.
google avatar

Rebekah F.

Yelp
This has been a favorite Mexican spot for years. We go for the great margaritas and guacamole. The reason for this 5 Star rating though is for their cleanliness procedures. My friend and I were finishing our Cadillac Margaritas close to closing time on a Monday night and the staff started taking apart the booths and moving them. We thought for sure they were getting ready to paint or do some sort of renovation so we asked what was going on. Our waiter told us they do that once a month to deep clean the crumbs, etc. that get in the corners under the booths and tables. Based on that, I imagine their kitchen in super clean as well. My friend and I are spreading the word. Thanks, El Tajado!

Yelp
Y'all who are rating El Tejado at less than 4 stars must be making a menu mistake. When my honey and I go we always order one of the platters for 2 and it's always a steal of a deal. Totally fan-worthy. They've changed them up a bit over the years but having gone again last night I think we discovered the best one of all: It's the Molcajete El Tejado--shrimp, roasted chicken, steak and pork strips combined with peppers, onions, chiles, salsa and a large amount of chorizo (!), all combined in a molcajete pot and cooked over an open fire. Incredibly delicious! (even though the meats stayed roasting a wee bit too long:). Couldn't eat but half of it on our mixed corn along with flour tortillas. Comes with a plate of guacamole, sour cream, rice, beans and cheese; and unless your a state fair food contest winner, the amount will be more than enough to take home for another meal or two. Match that up with their large glass of draft beer (it's gotta be 28 oz or so (of Negro Modelo) = my fave) and you'll get more than enough to last you through that huge wonderful meal~! Plus, the servers are sweet as can be and while you might have to wait an hour or so at Adelita's for a table, at El Tejado you can usually walk in and be seated right away. Sinceramente, David "es realmente muy bueno" M.

Khampha K.

Yelp
Went here to celebrate my girlfriends bday. Such a great time. Good food and good service. I got the El Tejado platter with steak, lobster and shrimp. I was kinda worried that the quality would be off but it was pretty damn good. All three proteins were good quality with big portions. Steak was big and plump and the lobster tail was pretty good sized as well. Served with a side of rice, beans, potatoes it was a pretty hearty meal. Will definitely be coming back for this platter! A meal fit for a Queen!

Bob H.

Yelp
Great food and service. Customer service from the time we entered was extraordinary. Parking a little difficult but we parked on Broadway and it was easier. Thanks again for the great service.

Yelp
Been coming here with my family for YEARS! Easily, they have my favorite breakfast burritos in Denver. Th + Ample seating + Big parking lot + Affordable prices + Authentic Mexican tastes + What's good: breakfast burritos, cheese enchiladas, veggie breakfast skillet (comes with pancakes!) Update: I came back recently and wanted to rave about the veggie skillet. It is literally so good. El Tejado seems to have raised their prices since the last time I was there :( It won't stop me from going, though...

Yelp
First time here. First thing.... The salsa is so fresh and so good it made my day immediately right after I sat down. I had the Carne Asada and it was cooked to perfection! The rice was okay and the refried beans were way too runny. The salsa alone is a great reason to come here. They need to Jar and label the Salsa to sell retail!!!
google avatar

Brennan P.

Yelp
Came here with my wife for date night and really enjoyed it. Carlos was our server and he took great care. Waters were filled and Pepsi's were kept full. We both had different enchiladas for dinner and they were bomb. Lots of margaritas all around and busy on a Wednesday always a good sign. Looking forward to coming back

Yelp
After 25 years of experience and over 15 years eating at this location I finally am at my wits end. My kids have always ordered the same thing every time and when we eat at the restaurant we spend a minimum of $150.00 per visit! This time the new server made a mistake and put things on my kids food that they never ask for. They told us that the so-called chef would not replace the items for the kids and charged us an additional $30 to replace the mistake that the server made, you would think after coming to this place biweekly and sometimes weekly that the manager would make it right this didn't happen! This is not customer service I've come from the industry I've been in the industry. I will never understand this! I will never give this place my money again please share with your family & friends so they do not get taken advantage of by poor customer service! I'm sad that this is how a place we loved so much could be so unapologetic about something that could have been a simple fix! We have never had an issue with anything up until this point and that is why we are so unhappy! They we willing to lose truly diehard customers over $30. As a Restaurant owner for over 25 years, I'll never understand this.

Yelp
Been coming here for over 20 years, this has always been our "go to" . But today was the last time, I'm afraid. The prices have skyrocketed almost 50% and the flavor has dissappeared. I asked the waitress about the price increase and she acknowledged that it was a very high increase and walked away. For what I paid to have tortillas and eggs, I could've gone to a steakhouse, and have drinks and a salad . Very disappointing

Adam M.

Yelp
I just want to say I have supported BOTH El Tejados, (one burnt down on wadworth and florida) and the most recent time was complete b.s. The price increase, NO COMBINATION plates, rude staff....it has not been the same since the beginning of this year. This was my absolute favorite Mexican restaurant, but I'd rather make my own food at home for 1/3 the price....100$ for family of four for beans, rice, tortillas and chili?!?!?! No thanks

José D.

Yelp
I'm originally from Denver and now live near Mexico City. Denver is lucky to have the Mexican food it has, especially green chili, which doesn't exist down here. As far as I'm concerned, the Mexican food down here is mediocre at best. I used to eat at El Tejado at least once a week, as my office was nearby. I loved to build my own combo, usually a chile relleno, beef enchilada and guacamole tostada. Delicious! Other times I would have a beef and bean burrito smothered in green chili. Whatever I ordered, I always left happy. We now travel to Denver at least once a year specifically to get our green chili fix at El Tejado and a couple other restaurants. We'll be there soon... can't wait!

Yelp
Super friendly and accommodating staff! Our micheladas were delicious! The steak was a bit dry and the beans were slightly cold, but the salsa that comes with the chips was very tasty and spicy the way I like it.

Yelp
Saddest review ever. Growing up in Englewood, El Tejado was my family's go to for around 30 years. About a month ago, for my birthday, I had an experience that literally brought tears to my eyes. In the blink of an eye, this once great restaurant became a less than average Mexican place. I don't know what happened, but I ate there on Monday, 1/31/22 and it was the same green Chile, delicious refried beans, and little homemade flour tortillas that I've always loved. On Sunday, 2/6/22, the food was inedible. I ordered fajitas and everything was awful. It tasted as though the cast iron fajita skillet was rusty and uncleaned, the steak was overcooked and burnt, the green Chile was less than sub par, and the margarita was watered down and boring. RIP El Tejado, thanks for supplying myself and my loved ones with so many amazing meals and good times over the years.

Yelp
We tried this place based on a local article listing best places to get green chili in Denver. The green chili was disappointing but their carne asada tacos were not. The food comes out fast. Their salsa had a good spice level (might be a tad spicy for some) and good flavor. The Jamaica aguas Fresca was lacking in the flavor department. I wouldn't come here for the green chili but would come back for their tacos and salsa.

Yelp
Not too bad of a spot! They have a parking lot, patio, and indoor seating. They have a few veggie options and don't seem to like substitutions. I got the combo of bean burrito, cheese enchilada, and tamal - I asked if I could sub the pork tamal for another cheese enchilada, and they charged me an extra $1. There was no combo with 2 enchiladas and bean burrito, so they took advantage of my customization. That's ok I guess since it was only $1 but still a little annoying. The bean burrito had tasty refried beans; the cheese enchiladas were small and basic. The house margarita was tasty! The chips and salsa - how I judge Mexican spots - were great. The chips were warm and fresh, and the salads had a little kick. There's a huge menu, so it takes a little time to go through. Waiters kept checking on us (I took a bit to go through the menu) and made sure our water was full.

Yelp
I have been going to El T's for about 30 years. I am sad to say the consistent magic they brought to the table for decades has come to an end. I have eaten there twice recently and both times the flavor profile was different. Especially in the green chili. Something has changed and it is unfortunately not the same.
