19 Places to Eat and Drink on the Upper East Side

"As businesses like Reyes Deli in Park Slope and Zaragoza in the East Village go to show, some of the city’s best Mexican food is found behind the counters of bodega-taquerias. El Tepeyac, on the border of East Harlem and the Upper East Side, is no exception. The burritos, which come with carne asada, al pastor, cecina, and a few other meats, are first rate. Order one to share, plus one of the restaurant’s lesser-seen Mexican dishes, like guaxmole verde (pork ribs in a sauce made from gauje seeds and jalapeno) or entomatado, a beef stew with tomatillo and chipotle chiles." - Eater Staff

The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week, May 2022 - Eater NY

"Pictured here is the best burrito in New York City, or so it was named by local food Instagrammer @beli_eats last year. The account, which has over 100,000 followers, is known for its power rankings of the city’s best burgers, pizzas, Italian sandwiches, and so on. In September, it came for burritos, and this one from El Tepeyac Food Market apparently rose above the rest. Almost everyone sitting outside this Upper East Side bodega-taqueria was eating a bowl of soup — pork pozole or caldo de res — but I restrained myself and went for the campechano burrito. For $13, it comes packed with rice, beans, steak, and chorizo in a toasted flour tortilla that was fighting for its life to stay enclosed. Was this the best burrito in New York City? I’ll let you be the judge. At the very least, it was the best one this week. — Luke Fortney, reporter" - Eater Staff

Everything was very delicious. You should not pass up the opportunity to order the birria tacos with consommé, wow they are super delicious. The blue corn quesadilla is not far behind, I need to go back to try the pozoles and the other carne asada quesadilla. For drinks, We ordered Horchata and Tamarindo. The 2 are super good, but my fav is the horchata flavor.

You have to try the quasadilla with Carnitas! i’ve tried more than 30 quesadillas in New York City, and this was by far the best. we found out about this place from TikTok for the burrito which was great, but we were pleasantly surprised by both the tacos and quesadillas as well. Jay was the best server!!

The dishes at El Tepeyac were mostly good. The shrimps in the shrimp tacos were kind of plain though. It’s very nice of our waitress to brought us a complimentary chips and salsa. Their recommended dishes on their menu were delicious. However, it’s a personal preference that I preferred my favorite Mexican restaurants in the Upper West Side.

Growing up in LA and seeing a lot of recent influencer hype for this place we were pretty disappointed in how bland the super burrito was. Even dousing it in the sauce provided couldn't save it. The waitress and everything else was very nice though! Just agreed that the food was a few pegs below your average chipotle burrito

Decent food, not the real Mexican flavor but close. Staff is nice. Place is tiny so be prepared to wait in line. A little overpriced.

Great Price, one plate is bigger enough for a table of two(NYC Style Quesadillas - Cheese chipotle chicken

The food here is terrible. I’ve had amazing tacos in LA, Texas, Chicago, and even some good places near Brooklyn. These tacos had no flavor at all, not enough seasoning or salt. The meat was soggy instead of being cooked well, and the salsa verde tasted bland. I don’t get why this place has good reviews—I don't believe the reviewers have experienced truly good Mexican food.

This place is a gem! Authentic fresh food and fresh taste! Wonderful service. Good music and atmosphere too. I had a vegetarian taco (2) served with salsa verde and it was excellent! It’s the real deal.
