I saw this spot on Geaux Rouge and was officially green with envy that I hadn't discovered it first as it's right down the street. Needless to say, that weekend after some overconsumption at a friend's graduation celebration, I decided it was as good of a time as any to try it out. When you walk into this non descript shopping center spot, you are transported into a classic family Mexican restaurant. No frills, bright colors, only a couple of tables and a counter but the smells coming out of the small kitchen were intoxicating.
First off, any time lengua is on the menu, I am IN, so I ordered the lengua Gordita, the asada and pastor tacos, and the steak quesadilla. Like most gringas, to my unfortunate demise, I also ordered chips and salsa to fill up on before I even bite into my taco. Luckily this time, it was my after taco snack. As a beautiful accompaniment, I also had a tall glass of horchata which I'm convinced is a secret hangover cure.
Anyway, the food. The tacos were chocked full of juicy authentically prepared asada and pastor. They were dressed as you often see, with onion and cilantro and I wouldn't have it any other way. With the addition of some spicy creamy verde on top, easily one of the best authentic style tacos I've had. The Gordita was delicious and I really enjoyed the textures of the shell and the delicate meat but unfortunately, the lengua was a little strong for my taste. The quesadilla was enormous and filled with asada and creamy cheese and the rice and beans in their lard-filled glory were welcomed with open arms into my sad sad wine soaked body.
I will 100% be back to try maybe some chilequiles or a baleada :)
