The 38 Essential Milwaukee Restaurants

"Across three locations, El Tsunami distinguishes itself with little touches: The frosty micheladas are served in copiously salted mugs, camarones come by the bounteous chalice, tacos al carbon give off the essence of backyard barbecue, the garlicky house-made chorizo are appropriately smoky, and the verde salsa is a frisky emulsification that goes with absolutely anything. The chicken taco is the floor for a perfect meal, but the ceiling might be the bistec en chile de arbol, which brings hallucinatory heat." - Todd Lazarski

Google
Great spot for Mexican food near Milwaukee airport! The red snapper was fresh and flavorful, cooked perfectly with just the right amount of seasoning. Their ground beef tacos were also delicious! It’s very juicy, well-seasoned, and generously filled. Service was impressively quick, making it ideal for a casual but satisfying meal. Don’t miss their margarita buy 1 get 1 free promo on weekdays. Definitely worth a try!

Really enjoyed this place, the salsa is unlike any I’ve ever had, it is super spicy. Portions are huge and the food is so good!

10/10 Shrimp Ceviche! The service was excellent as well! Great atmosphere, which is always a plus! Will definitely be back!

Jalapenos stuffed with shrimp and wrapped in bacon? Wow. Family had Rojas enchiladas, ground beef nachos, and kids tenders and fries. The portions here are very large, all the sauces and salsas have a nice kick, I really loved the salsa that comes with the chips. They have so many different hot sauces available at the table which I normally would have used excitedly but there was no need as what came with the food was so flavorful.

A friend recommended this place. He absolutely right about the seafood. I had a fried snapper which was amazing. The margaritas were not good, he did mentioned premade. I ordered one on the rocks and there was no alcohol in it at all. I just ended up ordering a beer which paired better with my fried snapper.

Google
Good food and salsa. We had enchiladas and combination plate with pitcher of margaritas. Margaritas were ok, not strong. Waitress did not speak good english. Fairly busy for a Thursday night. I would definitely return.

Google
They have the best salsa in town. I think it's great that this restaurant is well lit so you know exactly what you're eating. I ordered a seafood melody soup that had wonderful assortment such as octopus that was so tender, squid, Crab, shrimp, and clams...served with saltiness crackers.. They were out of the red snapper so we went with the tilapia for my friend and it was delicious. It came with a special recipe potato salad, salad, rice, and limes. Definitely will go again.

Yelp
We had an early morning flight, so we were staying at the Sleep Inn and Suites by the airport. On our way there we noticed that El Tsunami Mexican and Seafood was very close (walkable even), so we decided to just have dinner there. We arrived early on Friday night. It was maybe 5:00. They were able to seat us immediately. That being said, we could see the hostess counter from where we were sitting and by 5:20 a substantial line was forming. There was also a lot of carry-out going on. I suspect that if you go on a weekend, you should expect a wait. Our server came quickly to take our food and drink order. She brought out chips and salsa. The chips were good though I found the salsa a little bit watery. We both had lime margaritas which were also tasty. After that we didn't see much of our server, but a different server brought out our food and a third server picked up our check. I had the carne asada. Everything was very tasty except the rice which I found really salty on its own. But mixed with beans and meat in a corn tortilla then it was very good. My partner had a ceviche. It thought it was OK, but he makes a ceviche at home which he mentioned was better. Although I wouldn't make a special trip just to eat here, if we need to go back to the airport, I'd be fine dining here again.

Yelp
I wanted to go here and have a nice meal, drop $200 on liquor, tasty drinks, nice meal and good tip... we walked all the way to Tsunamy which takes 15 minute walk but it was not open.... It made me very sad! July 4th is an American holiday to celebrate America which I don't celebrate... how can these Mexican celebrate a president who wants to deport them? But they lost a big sale and a good customer!

Yelp
First time here!! I ordered shrimp tacos, which were extremely fresh tasting! My husband ordered a combination plate which he had a few meats to choose from, but he chose pork which was extremely seasoned and Delicious!! Our server was extremely nice. And the place is really clean. We will definitely return!

Yelp
I have been here a couple times now and I realized that I didn't do a review and post any pictures from the first visit. I really like this place because it has an upscale decor done in a nice way with a long elegant bar, hi tables next to the bar, big booths, big wrap around windows with elegant light fixtures. I was started chips/salsa and I ordered a multi colored margarita. The chips were thin/fresh but not seasoned. The salsa was good with avocado chunks and some nice heat finish. The multi color margarita was thick and ok but it lost it self with all the flavors in one large glass. I would order the combination plate with one taco, enchilada and tostada with choice of meat that comes with rice and beans. Service was ok and my food came quickly and it had a nice presentation on a rectangular plate. The ground beef enchilada was cheesy but fairly bland. The steak taco was not seasoned very well either but it had tiny diced skirt steak with a char grilled flavor and very good, the tiny diced meat was genus because none of the meats will be chewy and hard to eat. The tostada was Al pastor with lettuce, tomato, sour cream and cheese that was good with a sweet taste in the pork. The beans were super thick topped with cheese and the rice was perfect for mixing with the beans and topped with hot sauce. Overall was it the best Mexican restaurant no because I like more seasoned food but it was good and better than average. Even though I forgot to review it on my first visit I did remember that the margaritas were big and I did enjoy the food.

Yelp
Fast & friendly service and food is fresh and delicious. Had the oysters as an appetizers, highly recommend. Their steak has that fresh off the grill taste & flavor

Yelp
The food was great, the service was alright, the ambiance wouldve been better if the servers did something about the annoying kid playing music.

Yelp
Outside Mexico' the most authentic at least here in mke area. I ordered the shrimp burrrito. It was so good. I meant to order lengua but there was a language barrier. Came in on a Tuesday at 8pm. It was about 3-4 packed. Guac also good. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Great place for some quick seafood. My order usually takes about 20 mins when it's not busy. Order ahead to get it going

Yelp
Probably one of the worst Mexican restaurants I've been to in a long time it's not really Mexican food it's more seafood, so if you're looking for Mexican food, do not go here

Yelp
I didn't know what to expect. I stopped at 4pm on a Wednesday. I was pleasantly greeted in a clean environment. I ordered a mango margarita on the rocks. They only have 2 flavors on the rocks. I took the blended mango. It actually tastes like mango! Chips are ok. Salsa is unique! Smoky, chunky and can be a bit spicy (Im a wimp to spice). I ordered the chicken chimichanga dinner from the authentic menu. There were things on the menu that I never heard of and I blame that on my own ignorance. The chimichanga was filled with chicken and cheese. The rice was fair, the beans excellent. Prices are fair. Staff were all very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Wow! The staff was welcoming as you walk in. We were seated promptly and our waitress was right there. The menu has a really great variety that I usually only see in Chicago or Miami. The salsa is gently spicy and great chunks with some smoke. The beans and rice were GREAT. Some of the best I have had. The shrimp tacos were good, shrimp was a little over. The shrimp fajitas tho....beautiful! I wish I had the same kind of shrimp in my tacos as were in the fajitas!! All in all a good experience. We will be back!

Yelp
Food and service was great. Unfortunately when I ate my leftovers I bit into a metal twist tie.

Yelp
The Red snapper is amazing, I'm allergic to shellfish but everyone I took to the restaurant loved the shrimp tacos .,

Yelp
Third of their restaurants on the Southside..... great interior and same great food as the other locations. There focus is Mexican seafood dishes and I'm a huge fan of their fish tacos or shrimp/fish ceviche. Prices seem to be a bit more than their other locations but it's a nicer environment and larger than the other two locations. Great spot near the airport with easy access from the South Suburbs.

Yelp
It's a great experience. The ambiance is very welcoming and charming. Staff are extremely knowledgeable and make great recommendations. There seafood selections is outstanding. There cockatiels are great as well.My family thought enjoyed eating here and will be returning in the near future

Alexandra M.

Yelp
The salsa had a really smoky taste, which I normally am not a huge fan of but I really liked it! Margaritas were good, the blended mango tasted awesome! The lime margarita on the rocks was meh. We ordered the combination fajitas and the molcajete . Both were FANTASTIC! We definitely will be back.

Dominic B.

Yelp
Not a good experience. The waitress barely spoke English and on top of that didn't know the menu. Ordered a pitcher of Margaritas and it tasted like Gatorade. She barley checked back with us. The 2 stars is because the food was good, but it came out 1 plate at a time over 15 minutes...there were 5 of us. Will not patronize this restaurant again.

Kailyn P.

Yelp
Amazing foods I love eating here. I've brought family and friends. They even have good adult beverages.

Yelp
We would definitely go back. Had the steak tostadas was really good. Also had the mixed fajita (steak, chicken and shrimp) which was awesome.

BriCath K.

Yelp
The service was a bit of a struggle, but the food quality was excellent. We just happen to go into this place because it was near the airport. I would recommend it to any one that wants good Mexican food. It's homemade and done very well.

Addy B.

Yelp
Excellent food and service, especially at the Layton Ave. and Lincoln locations. Try the tilapia!

Crisendia C.

Yelp
I love tsunami some amazing Authentic Mexican food for great pricing. We used to drive from Oak creek to South side just to go eat at their two Milwaukee locations now we don't even have to drive more than 10 mins

Lili S.

Yelp
Ive eaten takeout before and it was good but now cant find number to order takeout by phone... gruhub only

Ashley R.

Yelp
Great Mexican, really good sauces. Their chips and salsa are really good. Only minor thing is the pricing to upgrade to a "dinner" (aka rice and beans) is inconsistent.
