The 24 Best Restaurants in Tulum, Mexico | Eater

"The newest cochinita pibil and lechón stand to enter the growing street food scene along Avenida Kukulkan, south of Highway 307, opened in October 2024 and is already a destination for mouthwatering tortas de cochinita. The stand is named after owner and cab driver Luis “El Vaquero” Felipe, and the food is based on recipes created by his wife, Tayra Lara; both are Veracruz transplants. For the torta, juicy cuts of cochinita are carefully loaded into crisp Yucatán-style pan francés to create the perfect texture. Add in some roasted habanero with pickled onions, then generous squirts of green habanero salsa or salsa de chiles secos (red salsa), as is customary in a region quite taken with chile habanero. There are tacos, too, and the lechón is tasty as well, but destiny lies with the torta de cochinita, devoured at the stand’s picnic bench or taken to go." - Bill Esparza

El Vaquero in Locust is hands down one of my favorite places to eat—I always come here, and it never disappoints. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted with a warm and friendly atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. The staff is consistently welcoming, attentive, and quick to serve, even during busy hours. The food is absolutely fantastic. Everything I’ve tried has been fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The menu has a great variety of options, whether you’re in the mood for classic tacos, enchiladas, sizzling fajitas, or something a little different. Their chips and salsa come out fast and are always a great start to the meal. I especially love how generous the portions are—you definitely get your money’s worth here. What really makes El Vaquero stand out, though, is the consistency. No matter what day or time I visit, I know I’m going to get great food and great service. It's clear that the team here takes pride in what they do, and it shows in every detail—from the way the food is presented to the way they treat their customers. If you’re in Locust and looking for a place to enjoy delicious, authentic Mexican food in a relaxed and friendly setting, I can’t recommend El Vaquero enough. It’s a five-star experience every single time.

Muy ambles y atentos todos. Todo estaba delicioso. Lo disfrutamos mi familia y yo. My family and I really enjoyed the food and service! The servers were nice and attentive. We tried it for the first time and it's only about 10-15 mins away. Thank you! Muchas gracias!

This used to be our favorite spot. I don't know what had changed, but no more chances for El Vaquero. Our takeout orders are never correct, the quality of the food has been horrible the last few times, and tonight the steak tacos were so over seasoned and salty they were inedible. Only the spot up the road from here on out. Food, salsa, and margaritas are much better a bit further north...

Taco salads were good. No guacamole on it (most places put a scoop with the sour cream). Fast service. Wait staff were very attentive. Very friendly and this is very clean restaurant. Margaritas are good but rather than put the duck and cute lil light- charge me a few dollars less and just give me the drink instead of a 12 buck Margarita. 😆🍹but the drink itself was good.

My wife and I went for late lunch. Server couldn't speak English well and messed up our order. They must of had someone who normally doesn't cook, make our food. It was complete trash. We normally either finish our plate or take it home for leftovers. Not this time. We haven't been back since. Not spending money on these restaurants to not care. I'll just eat at home or eat Ramen before I eat this trash.

We enjoyed the overall quality of the food, but the kid's meal was unfortunately burned. The portion sizes were smaller than expected. Additionally, we noticed a change in our server's attitude after we placed our order, possibly because we didn't order any alcohol.

We used to live in Southern California and so those are our standards when eating Mexican food. The food at this place was marginal. The service was EXCELLENT! The place was packed on a Tuesday night. It's just not for ex-Californians or Texans.
