Portland, Oregon’s Best Mexican Restaurants and Food Carts | Eater Portland

"This Lombard restaurant is named for its must-order dish: yique, a sort of Mixteco answer to barbacoa served as a porridge with blended corn. The richness of the tender, fall-apart goat blends with the guajillo-bolstered stew, making it a super comforting option on one of Portland’s countless rainy days. You’ll also find other worthy, brothy diversions, including mole amarillo, menudo, and birria de chivo. Orders can also be placed online."

The Best Restaurants and Bars in Portland’s Kenton Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"Perhaps no regional Mexican cuisine gets as much love in Portland these days (apart from perhaps Tijuana’s quesabirria) as Oaxaca. The latest NoPo outpost for the land of the moles is El Yike Oaxaqueno, named for Oaxaca’s yique (sometimes spelled yikin or yike), a goat barbacoa stew that utilizes corn kernels ground into small pieces — chunkier than masa but smaller than full kernels or hominy. Difficult to find outside of Oaxaca and the California coast, yique is the crown jewel here at El Yike, but the rest of the menu is no slouch, including mole amarillo, mole Oaxaqueno, and a solid selection of tamales, empanadas, and of course the ever popular tacos." - Nathan Williams

Google
Their fish tacos are suuuuper good, and it always feels warm and inviting to come. If the line at King Burrito is a bit too long, Id recommend giving this place a try.

Google
Looking for a menu with traditional Mexican breakfast items and found what I was looking for here at El Yikes Oaxaqueno!!! Great eggs over easy with thin cut air cured steak, beans and rice. The lunch and dinner menu items are wonderful too. The restaurant is colorful and the service is friendly, fast and knowledgeable about the offerings. I love this place!!!

Google
Yike in Portland weather is the perfect dish about 3/4 of the year. In the summer I order ribs with salsa verde (a rib ina. Tortilla is a vibe) but you could probably eat yike when it is hot out. Chivo is the Goat. Super star spot.

We love Oaxacan food and we get a lot of home cooked meals and have been to a lot of restaurants in Oaxaca City. This place is very authentic, the food was delicious, with a kick, the service was really quick and the staff was kind. The restaurant is small but once you enter, you know the food is about to be great.

Google
Woooooowie the tlayuda especial was so yummy. It's like a thin crust pizza but oaxaqueño style. An extra crispy thin base, beans, cheese, fresh tomato, avocado, cabbage, onion, and 3 meats! Chorizo, cecina(beef), pollo. Super friendly service and great conversations here. Fresh green and red salsa are amazing. Muy delicioso!!!!!!!!!!

Really nice people, good vibe, and that Molcajete bowl… wow 👌🏽

Google
Solid food at fair prices in unassuming digs. My food came out fast, the agua fresca (jamaica) was perfectly fine, and the huarache was good sized and tasty. Not a fancy place.

Google
The food is always good and authentic. If you get your order right. I guess authentic food comes at a price. Employees have a language barrier. They do seem to be improving though.

Yelp
best authentic tasting mexican food I've had since moving from California. Everything I've tried has been amazing I love the tamales & pozole verde

Yelp
Picaditas: $4 with no meat or $5.50 with meat, some meat options cost more. Carne asada: 5/5 not dry! Al pastor: 5/5 Lengua: 5/5 Cash is king here for a discount, lots of indoor seating. Family owned and authentic Oaxacan food! Service was fair, but everything is made from scratch. Which is extremely rare. Great place to watch soccer and enjoy great food.

Yelp
This is a salt of the earth basic restaurant no frills attached. What is emphasized is the food, which each time we've eaten here has been very good and very filling. The service is basic, you order at the counter and pay up front. But the food comes out quickly, and hot when they bring it to you. And as mentioned, it's very good. It's not going to wow you with a fancy decor, think more like a food truck indoors and stationary with a bigger menu. Also it is a far cry from taco bell, this is real quality and authentic cuisine. Like every small business, I hope you support them and give El Yike a try when you're in the neighborhood. I think you'll be glad you did.

Yelp
Good tamales and tacos, definitely want to try other things. And the people that work there are really nice.

Yelp
I ordered the carnitas and asada tacos. Both were great street tacos. I really like the raw onion and cilantro on top. The service is also very friendly.

Yelp
The food was excellent. I had the picaditas and my spouse the quesabirra. I'd love to go back and try more everything looked tempting. The service was friendly and the spot was busy. The restaurant is nothing fancy but it was clean, brightly decorated and comfortable.

Yelp
Excellent yike which was seasoned and stewed with care. $15 is reasonable for this dish considering how much time and care was put into it, especially when you compare to a bowl of Pho or Indian curry, which are comparable in price. We also orders the Quesa birria which was great and the consumme was rich and flavorful. We will be coming back hopefully sometime soon to try the tamales and mole.

Yelp
Nice local place with excellent food. We ordered the Burria plate. Most were delicious, one had way too much fat. Also had the carnitas tacos which were right on! We'll be back.

Yelp
Horchata tasted more artificial than actual horchata - asked if I could get a different drink to replace and they seemed annoyed. The food was okay.

Yelp
Good food, cheap Taco Tuesday tacos. Salsas are the best! Would definitely recommend stopping but if you're in the area on a Tuesday!

Yelp
Based on previous reviews and the fact that I've walked by this place for years I decided to give it a try. Stopped in for lunch. Service was friendly. Glad I spoke some Spanish as I'm not sure the gal spoke English. No matter. The food was delicious and filling. I ordered the machete with carnitas. Loved it but would try their tacos next time. Aside from it being a bit greasy I loved it.

Yelp
The food is great but they get 3 stars because the bathroom was extremely dirty. Hand soap was not available, because of this cleanliness is questionable. As an LA resident I can confirm the food is authentic. Plenty of seats & parking. The staff is kind. I will visit again, I hope the bathroom is clean.

Yelp
The flavors are authentic and delicious. We used pick up take out and were not disappointed. We had eaten in with visitors a year ago and knew what to expect

Yelp
This place is great. There are very little places that yique (different places spell if different) and this is one of them. Although I didn't try it, the food we did order was delicious. I have never had such a flavorful pozole at a restaurant, I tend to avoid ordering pozole at restaurants because they're never as flavorful. The service was great, very attentive and family run. The place is kind of small but give you vibes of being in mex.

Mario H.

Yelp
They make the corn tortillas by hand!!! I had a huge corn tortilla quesadilla with mushroom and asada! The salsas were delicious and the service was fantastic.

Daniel C.

Yelp
Can't really say much about the look of the venue itself. But the food is outstanding.

Yelp
I've eaten there more than 10 times. Depending on what you've ordered, the food is very good. But I wouldn't' say it's excellent. It's very close to Oaxacan 'authentic', better than a few in Portland, as good as a couple of others. I was amused by one reviewer from "Los Angeles" giving the OK to 'authentic'. I lived in Oaxaca and speak Spanish well. Authentic was a difference between the affluent, the tourists, and the local people. Ok, to the point. If the younger English speaking woman is is there, your order will go well. If not, my orders are either missing a taco of three, or two are the two opposite I ordered. When I order a plate, it's served correctly. Adjustments like, "no pico" or "extra this order that", 'a little black beans and rice' on a taco, some guacamole or other, doesn't often work out. Hit and miss. The place is small and nice looking for a fast-food sit down Mexican restaurant. The ordering and dining area is relatively clean looking, but the bathroom is a horror, very dirty on three occasions. Also hit and miss for soap to wash your hands. So it made me wonder, "do they"? Hopefully in their kitchen. Recently, I used Grubhub to have it delivered. The restaurant called to tell me they couldn't put a little extra onion on one of my tacos. We're talking about a tsp or less? The it was something else. I cancelled but was told they wouldn't let me. Fortunately, Grubhub canceled for me. When they clean the bathroom regularly and learn to be a little more flexible about $0.40 cents of onion, I return for the food. But this was my last time for now. As I said, they are as good as some and I think some are better.

Yelp
This place is extremely good. I eat tacos here all the time and I've never once had a bad bite. Amazing.

Yelp
This location has been the site of success and also less great, and we're so happy this is here now. I'd had their delicious catering at a community event. When we visited we got a super friendly greeting and were treated graciously as we ate. I started with a huge frosted mug (!!) of horchata. Husband had a carne asada platter with so many fixin's - radishes, limes, avocado, roasted jalapeños, even fried whole onions. The tortillas are thick and handmade and delicious. I had a chicken machete - I was eager to try one. It comes on the super yummy tortillas. The chicken was well seasoned and delicious. Ambiance is cheerful and clean. They have yummy Mexican popsicles for dessert.

Yelp
My kiddo and I enjoyed how flavorful the food is! I got the posole and they got...something delicious I can't remember the name of! Also, telenovela's on the TV absolutely added to the experience.

Yelp
Es un lugar pequeñito, pero bien organizado, la comida deliciosa y excelente servicio, tienen una amplia variedad de platillos, pero mi preferido son las picaditas, me recuerdan a mi tierra, Orizaba, Veracruz!!

Phil T.

Yelp
OMG this place is sooooo good. I want to go back twice a day! I can't say enough about it...go, eat and be happy!

Yelp
The food was bomb . La comida muy rica ordenamos tacos al Pastor, picaditas, y el machete de asada. Recomiendo este lugar. Servicio muy amable también.

Yelp
Tried the Yike and Mole. Never had Yike but loved it. Wanted it again but because I went back a day later I tried the Mole, also great. Recommended 10/10.

Scott G.

Yelp
Legit Mexican food served fast and delicious. It's a bit of a hole in the wall, but well worth a visit. I had the enchiladas de mole and some tacos and everything was good.

Sylvia H.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant! The mole is the best I've ever had. Other dishes are delicious too. A clean, cheerful space with gracious service. Long menu and fair prices.

Jake F.

Yelp
Couldn't hold back long enough to take a picture, seriously it is that good. Easily the best tamale I've had since leaving the southwest, and the yike is the perfect thing for a cold night.
google avatar

Bryan W.

Yelp
I got a carne asada burrito. It's good for PNW standards, but the food doesn't meet what I'd expect for 5-star Mexican. The meat was not the best quality, seasoning was decent, and salsa was underwhelming (as all salsa in Portland seems to be). I'll come back again to try some other items, but not sure this place can become my go-to spot.

Jessica S.

Yelp
Tried the tacos carnitas- SO GOOD. Went in not expecting much, but was surprised at how good their food was. I'm super picky about carnitas too... I'll definitely go back here. They had great customer service too

Ricardo M.

Yelp
Excellent service and the food was amazing. Service was really friendly. We had a couple different dishes, taco de lengua and asada was awesome. Their menudo was hot and steamy, really hit the spot for us. Homemade tortillas brought everything together. Highly recommend this spot if you are looking for classic authentic Mexican food in Portland.

Yelp
friendly staff, very good food. the machete is a must have. Food was served quickly, and fresh.

Yelp
We noticed El Yike Oaxaqueno was full of people on Sunday so we thought that we should try it. We had the mole plate and the posole verde, both dishes were excellent and very satisfying. We won't hesitate to visit again when we are in the neighborhood.

Yelp
I'm from phx feeling homesick so I looked up the nearest Mexican food from my Airbnb & I'm so happy I found this place. 10/10 food & service I love it so much! Left with a big belly. Can't wait to come back sorry for not taking pictures of the food, but it looked so good I just couldn't wait

Chris L.

Yelp
Some of the best and most authentic Mexican food in Portland. Good prices too. Don't pass by El Yike!

Mo M.

Yelp
I've eaten here many times and like most of what I've had, but it's the tamales that keep me coming back. Thin layer of masa, succulent pork in a savory sauce wrapped in a banana leaf. It's the perfect proportion of filling to masa. Delicious.

Gilberto T.

Yelp
I have had a tough time finding good food from Mexico, Oaxaca, el Salvador, etc. This place has some of the best tacos, will have to come back for more, the queso birria was awesome and the broth too good. Their salsas are delicious! Recommend to go there. Verna and Matias are humble people who really enjoy doing what they do. Parking is the only hard part about getting here. Thanks!
