short: Another baby taco place.
long: I was recommended this place by someone at the gym. I went and the place seemed okay. I went up to the counter and informed Topsy that it was my first time there. I asked what the size of the taco is. He showed me a small container lid, to which I immediately sighed internally and thought to myself...ugh...another baby taco place. I was already there, hungry, and told the gym guy I'll provide him feedback so I felt obligated to buy something. I ordered the shrimp taco and carne asada taco. Topsy offered hot sauce, to which I declined but he reassured me that it wasn't spicy. I observed Topsy working non-stop, wiping the tables and adjusting the stools after each customer left. He also swept and changed the trash bag. Topsy works non-stop. If I were looking to hire someone, I'll definitely hire him. The same can't be said for the rest of the staff. My number was called. I walked up to a small container on the counter, which had the two tacos. Luckily, the sides I paid $1 each for, were the size of the tacos themselves. I poured everything on their and made myself some sort of mush. I tested the hot sauce and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't hot at all; it's basically a smoky chipotle sauce, so I dumped that on top of the mush. I started eating and I struck shrimp. The shrimp taco is pretty good. It reminds me of ceviche; not the typical rubber shrimp. While I was eating that I thought to myself that because of Topsy's excellent customer service and the shrimp taco, that I'll come back but then it was time for the carne asada; which seemed like chewing on the sole of a worn out sneaker. It was so dry and hard to chew. I forced myself to eat it. I thought to myself, I'll come back for Topsy and the shrimp taco. If Topsy isn't at the counter, I'll walk right back out. Then I approached Topsy and I asked him how often they get the shrimp. He said it's delivered frozen, Monday through Friday, then it gets marinated. I told him it was good but what's up with the carne asada? Why is it so dry and hard to chew? He said it's usually not like that unless they're busy but he will mention it to the cook. I waited and the cook came out looking for me. I told him the carne asada is very dry and hard to chew, why is it like that? He said when they are busy they tend to overcook the meat which leads to that happening and thanked me for telling him. I was extremely disappointed that he didn't offer to make one the right way, the way it should be cooked, even if I had to pay again. The place was not busy...look at the pictures and video attached to this review for reference. So I went back to Topsy and explained to him my disappointment in the cook, Carantino, not making any attempt to make it right. He apologized and said that the neighborhood has alot of people that say things were missing or not cooked properly to get the food for free. I showed him my profile page and said look, I get food offered free often, but I choose to pay for the food because I want to be completely honest in my reviews; this wasn't about getting a free taco, but about what is done by the staff to correct a situation, when they admit themselves they did it wrong. For the aforementioned reasons, I cannot recommend this place. I do recommend someone hiring Topsy and giving him the opportunity to grow. He cares about the job and the people he serves.
