I revisited Elephant District (went two days in a row ), and while the experience had its highs, there were a few surprises. We started with the curry puffs as an appetizer. Honestly, I was expecting something closer to a samosa or a puff pastry with a more pronounced curry flavor, but that wasn't the case. However, the sauce served alongside--a sweet, clear concoction with red onion and cucumber--was fantastic, reminiscent of a Thai "boon sauce." The homemade pastry dough was fine, but overall, the dish didn't quite meet my expectations, and I wouldn't recommend it.
On the other hand, the pork skewers were a hit! Juicy, tender, and perfectly marinated with a teriyaki-like flavor, they were an absolute delight. The accompanying spicy sauce brought a good amount of heat without overpowering the dish, allowing the delicate flavors to shine through.
For my entrée, I chose the Chef Mother Special Pork Belly, which came with rice. If a menu item suggests a Thai fried egg, always say yes! It was cooked to perfection--no runny whites, just creamy yolk that spread beautifully over the rice. The pork belly itself was tender and well-prepared, though I was expecting a stickier, sweeter sauce, like a teriyaki glaze. It was still good but leaned more mild in flavor than I anticipated.
My husband ordered the basil chicken with minced chicken (Thai-style), and it was incredible--bursting with flavor and everything I wish I had ordered instead! A traditional dish done perfectly, it stole the show for me.
Of course, I couldn't resist ordering the same desserts I fell in love with last time: the crepes with sweetened egg yolk strings. These dessert continues to blow me away with it textures, flavors, and presentation.
Elephant District remains a favorite, but this visit taught me which dishes shine brightest. While I may skip the curry puffs next time, the pork skewers, basil chicken, and those unforgettable desserts will keep me coming back for more next time we are in town.
