Pitmaster Elliott Moss Opens a Barbecue Restaurant in Florence, S.C. | Eater Carolinas

"Opened in mid-March by acclaimed pitmaster Elliott Moss in the Seminar Brewing space, this hometown barbecue spot celebrates Pee Dee whole-hog tradition with pulled-pork whole-hog plates, baby back ribs, smoked chicken wings and plenty of Southern sides. Moss—returning to his birthplace after years working in Asheville and co-founding notable projects—has been warmly received by locals and visiting festival crowds; the team even plated for award-winning pitmasters at a recent Florence food festival. The whole-hog plate is a must-order, and the pimento cheese and bacon burger (smoky meat with creamy pimento and pickled peppers) is singled out as one of the best bites of the year. Conveniently positioned as an easy stop off I-95 for travelers seeking better smoked meats than typical roadside options, the owner plans to expand the restaurant’s reach while keeping it rooted in Pee Dee flavors. Open Wed–Thu 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Sun 11 a.m.–9 p.m." - Erin Perkins

My wife and I have been going to Elliott since they opened. Right from the beginning, we really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. Over the course of the last year, we have been very interested to see all of the improvements that they’ve made. From the outside to the inside, it looks completely different. They’ve transformed it from what almost seem like a warehouse a year ago to a significantly more Attractive venue. We enjoy the regular menu quite a bit. Very typically we will get some combination of the nachos, a burger and the chicken sandwich. All three are delicious. The chicken sandwich specifically, might be the single best chicken sandwich in Florence. It’s nice that they do have specials on the menu. It gives you a chance to go to a place that you like and yet have some variety and a little something new. The most recent special that we had was the schnitzel which was excellent. It’s a great place to go for dinner or to meet up with friends for a cold beer.

First time visiting Elliots: Haley was our server. She was delightful and gave recommendations after asking about our taste preferences, she let us taste a couple beers before deciding on a glass and she whipped up the Memphis Blues cocktail for me which is one of the best cocktails I've ever had. Note to restaurant, you have more IPA's than anything else in beer and I'd like to see more blonde pales or wheat's but husband loved the Lunar Haze and the stout. Husband's favorite food item was the cheddar sausage appetizer. Unlike anything we've had before in sausage and in house made! We both had the pulled bbq and he got the ribs. Ribs were meaty, tender and you could taste a whiff of smoke which was delicious. Same for the pork and they give you a large portion. Sides were collards (some of the best I've ever had but (note to chef) a tad salty, however, I couldn't stop eating them! Potato salad has a "zing" to it, sweet potato fries were great, baked beans tasted like the best family reunion type beans, the kind you always look forward to enjoying. Go to Elliot's, ask for Haley and definitely get the sausage appetizer, enjoy the cool adult beverage selections and feast on the best bbq and sides you've ever dreamed of!

Absolutely one of the best doing Whole Hog in the country. Great wings, burgers, ribs and sausages. The sides are on another culinary level, using the freshest local ingredients. The boiled peanuts are a must! Grab a beer & enjoy!

I never knew this place existed in Florence. When you first walk in, it's absolutely incredible. Inside there's a brewery in the back right where they brew their own beers. Plenty of seating, with booths, tabletops and regular tables. Had the BBQ plate with 2 sides. Absolutely incredible taste. Drinks are a little expensive, for two people our bill was $70. But overall, the food is outstanding, and it is a must visit if you love BBQ.

BBQ was excellent with vinegar based sauce on table to add. Had the hot-yakki wings and they were crispy. Also the swet potatoe fries had the perfect amount of salt and were delicious. Our server (Kendall) was so nice and attentive with great service!

Google
Let me start with what a wonderful experience and the man himself, Elliot, was there as well. The staff are super knowledgeable and attentive. The beers were delicious! And my dad had the Pinot Gris & tried the Prosecco on tap, both were good. We always share so that was we can try lots of different things. We got the Trinity (ribs, pulled pork, and cheddar jalapeño sausage) and lots of sides. We also got a half smoked chicken and the chicken tenders (yes, we have lots of left overs). Everything came out hot and delicious but the star was not the pork but the chicken. The 1/2 chicken and the chicken tenders were so juicy and full of flavor my mouth waters just remembering. The pulled pork was good, ribs had great flavor but not fall off the bone, and the sausage was by far the tastiest burst of flavor of all the dishes. We tried so many different sides but the ones that stood out were the French fries (for flavor), the coleslaw was fresh made, the baked beans, and the mixed beans. We loved them all. It’s a family friendly cool place to go to. So many arcade games, pool tables, big cumfy chairs, and a beer garden (that needs some updates) has the potential to be a hot spot for bands and parties. Definitely will be back! Side note: the bathrooms were super clean and reminded me of my grandmothers.

Google
First time visiting after remodel. We ordered several things fron the menu. A burger, chicken strips, buffalo chicken sandwich, tater tot nachos and the soft pretzel. All the food was served hot and fresh. The burger was ok. Nothing really special about it and the fries were crispy and fresh. Chicken tenders were hot and fresh and large. Our daughter had plenty to take home. The buffalo chicken sandwich was pretty large and the sauce is zippy. I liked it and brought half home as we had two appetizers. The soft pretzels were not huge but went well with the beer cheese. The mustard was a Dijon style and was decent as well. Last but not least. The motor tot nachos. Had high expectations. We got with the pork. Ill probably try the chicken next go around. While the portion was large. We felt it needed a bit more of the bbq sauce and toppings. The BBQ sauce at the table is not the same as what comes on the nachos. Moreover, fun family place to visit. Next time I want to try rhe wings.

Google
This is a great spot for BBQ and beers while in Florence. Highly recommend pairing the bbq with the “Darlington stripe” beer. Great spot if you are in town for a NASCAR weekend as welll.

Yelp
Everything is so good! Get there early as it gets busy. Arcades to entertain the kids and adults alike! Love the ribs! Wonderful gluten free options!

Yelp
All around a good experience in a simple but effective setting. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender and the pulled pork was excellent. Portion sizes were respectable, and we had some leftovers to take home. The server was available to answer questions and to take orders, patiently helpful without being pushy or rushed.

Yelp
So excited for this addition to Florence! The space is so much more accessible now with the addition of the games and pool tables. We had a group of 6 adults and 2 kids and when we walked in and told the hostess it was like they'd seen a ghost despite there being plenty of tables/space. We had to wait like 10-15 minutes then were sat. The hostess tried to take our drink orders as soon as we sat down and we told her we needed a minute to scope out the beer list and she just didn't come back. Thankfully our server eventually showed up and she was great. Across the table we ordered almost everything on the menu. Highlights were the pork chop steak, ribs, and the baked beans. The wings were good, just a bit small, and the nachos were huge and we enjoyed the sauce/salsa on top. We'll definitely be back again and look forward to trying any specials they do.

Yelp
Followed Elliott to Florence after Buxton Hall in Asheville was closed. So disappointing. BBQ was dry and pasty. Jalapeño Sausage was a high note. Overall, Really would not recommend.

Yelp
Best restaurant in Florence, SC outstanding bbq food and drink ! Staff was super friendly to our family.

Yelp
The atmosphere and service is excellent. Very kid friendly with the new kid's menu, ice cream and garden area as well as inside games and pool tables. You do have to order take out for the garden area, but with kids and budgets, it works; especially for young people who want to get together and talk. Tuesdays they do a $10 meal special. The food is good. They have changed the ribs to baby back which are good but not what they started out with so for me a disappointment. Why change? They are a brewery with many options. I like the stout (dissertation). If you prefer alcohol or wine, there are many options. It has been fun to watch how much Seminar has grown since new ownership and bringing in Elliott's. I love seeing local businesses prosper and this is one of the best in town.

Yelp
Being from around the area I have been exposed to great bbq my whole life. When I saw the vinegar sauce in the table I knew I was in the right spot. Started out supper with the smoked wings with mustard sauce and they were crispy with flavor and the sauce complimented the wings perfectly. I ordered the trifecta which had the pulled pork, ribs, and cheddar jalapeño sausage. All of them were delicious!

Yelp
The renovations to this place have been wonderful. It has a really cool vibe now and the beer continues to improve. The actual bbq is delicious. Our only complaints are that the veggie burger was eliminated and the bbq sauce is WAY too vinegary for my taste. Still, though, highly recommend!

Yelp
The pork is awesome. The ribs were delicious and the smash burger was so good. They do I great job on their sides. We have not had a single bad dish! Will go back often! Highly recommend. The staff is always friendly and professional. It a nice comfort food place that puts you in a relaxing mood.

Yelp
After reading an article on Elliot's, my wife and I were intrigued to try the BBQ Lounge, But was disappointed all the way around. I had the Trinity which was BBQ, baby back ribs and sausage with cheese. The food had little taste and was barely warm. In fact the BBQ was cold. The ribs were very short ribs and the sausage didn't taste like it was done. Won't be back and will tell others don't waste their time going.

Renee H.

Yelp
First time going , we were really excited to find a good BBQ place local ,BUT.... After about an hour after ordering we finally got our food and it was cold. Also we just ordered basic items that should have been ready. BBQ, ribs, rice, so nothing that really needed "cooking" . I noticed other tables that came in 30 minutes after us already getting their food and finished by the time we got ours. Told the waitress and she was like ok. It was like they didn't care. So I really doubt we go back.

Yelp
The whole hog bbq comes without sauce. They have a vinegar based sauce you may add but is not peppery The ribs were very good. The heat is in the baked beens. There is more seating area than it looks from outside. Very echoed and loud. Pool tables and video/ pinball machine's to keep rhe kids occupied.

Yelp
Grabbed a lunch at Elliott's today with friends (and kids & dog) and loved the experience. In the spirit of transparency, I have followed Elliott Moss' work since early 2000s at the Admiral, Ben's Tune Up and Buxton Hall in AVL. He is an amazing talent and I was happy to visit his new(er) operation in Florence. First off, the hostess/server was awesome, (shout out to Miss Jackie) and I loved that they were happy to welcome our pup with a bowl of water upon seating. Elliott was nice enough to take a few minutes with us to rehash some old memories and check on our food after finishing. I can't say enough how special a talent Elliott is but also how personable and rooted in his upbringing his masterful culinary efforts are. I feel lucky to have seen his efforts celebrated and rewarded during my time in AVL and am happy to see him bring those talents back to his home in the Pee Dee and see those dreams realized. Everything was wonderfully orchestrated and we had apps, entrees and amazing ice cream for dessert. It's an excellent spot with a brewery attached, courtyard and open dining room. So happy to see Elliott continue to do what he loves and in his hometown. Best of luck and continued success to one of the best!

Yelp
Food is tasty- we've tried this place twice now with the same hopes--Please work on kitchen time- it shouldn't take an hour to receive an order- (service was attentive)

Mary S.

Yelp
Waitress was wonderful! Food was delicious. I had chicken sandwich with pimento cheese and white bbq sauce. My friend had chicken strips. I got the rib dinner to take home to my husband! He loved them. Will definitely be back

Cody H.

Yelp
Better bartenders. The one that checked me out was by far the rudest I've ever met. So I guess you're not allowed to order a drink while you're waiting on your food? Never been to a restaurant/ brewery that didn't want you to order their beer. Other than that, food was great.

Jennie R.

Yelp
The entire experience was awful. The food temperature was poor and food lacked flavor. If a grown man asked for a Togo box for his entire meal to take home without eating it in the restaurant should have set off a red flag to the waitress there was a problem. My husband is way too nice to be honest that your food was terrible! I have to be the mama bear and say it's terrible that I had to go home to cook him supper since your food wasn't worth consuming.

Lori L.

Yelp
We found this on Yelp. I wanted to take my husband to Victor's but they're remodeling so I Yelped restaurants. It was delicious! My husband had baby backs, potato salad and sweet potato fries. I had the combo plate of shredded bbq pork and ribs with potato salad and zipper peas. It was delicious! Our waitress, Jessie, was amazing! She was helpful with our order and very attentive! I had a flight, all good choices! You won't be disappointed! We will definitely be back!
