Elm Coffee Roasters - Review - Pioneer Square - Seattle - The Infatuation

"Sometimes you just want to sit at a bar to do some work, but you don’t want it to involve cocktails or a bottle of wine, because that’s when your emails get really passive aggressive and/or question marks get typed out in multiples of six. Luckily, Elm Coffee has a nice big marble bar where you can drink a latte. photo credit: Erin Lodi" - Aimee Rizzo

Google
Such a nice spot! I went to Elm Coffee Roasters for a morning coffee and got a chocolate croissant — both were amazing. The coffee was rich and smooth, and the croissant was perfectly flaky. The vibe is super cozy, and I loved the smell of freshly roasted coffee as soon as I walked in. Definitely a great place to start the day!

Google
Had some great coffee here. We ordered the one of everything. It is quite a great deal for what you get. Everything was high quality and tasted really good. Seating felt a little bit limited with not too many tables in the spot, but the bar also has quite a few chairs too.

Google
By far the best coffeshop of my Seattle trip. Amazing ambience and super friendly/helpful/knowledgeable staff. The pastries which they probably source were amazing. But the coffee was unique and delicious. The warehouse/roastery/coffees cupping school gave the coolest vibe. Great merch. I really loved this place and will definitely be back and am kicking myself that I didn’t buy one of those beige motel mugs. Wanna ship one to me? lol. This place was amazing. Thank you!!

Google
All of the coffees they serve are roasted in the back room. They roast Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and there are large viewing windows to see the action. Cupping and brewing classes are held in the back area. I tried two different coffees. First was spiced coffee, it was amazing!!! I was afraid that it might be to sweet, but it is actually not. The sweetness is perfect. And I tried one and one. If you want to taste their coffee bean original teste and also want a macchiato, it is a good option.

Google
A really good and high quality coffee, (I came from California, and I didn’t find coffee of this level anywhere else like here in Washington) very nice croissant and cozy place. I highly recommend this place. One of the best coffee in the United States, i’m serious!😍🙏🏻 Thanks guys!

Google
Stopped in and got a blueberry almond muffin and chai latte. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the variety of beans for sale; I saw them give very comprehensive advice to another customer. I don’t know what exactly it was about the muffin but it was really good! The chai latte wasn’t too strong but fragrant and a little spicy, not sweet. The space itself is large but a lot of it is taken up by roasting equipment so there’s not a ton of seating: just a few tables, but about 6 or so bar seats which could be nice if you’re feeling chatty and/or like watching the baristas work. Cool environment with all the roasting stuff and sacks of beans in the industrial setting.

Google
Possibly the best quality coffee in Seattle. I usually get an espresso and my wife gets a cappuccino, and the baristas here know how to craft them perfectly. On top of that, the atmosphere of high ceilings with brick walls is a soothing accompaniment, making not only the coffee reminiscent of Northern European coffee houses.

Google
This is the kind of latest wave--five, six?--coffee that's easy to hate. Elm will defy the haters. Their filter coffee--my people call it "drip," after the action of coffee passing through a filter--is bright, complex and delicious. And the granola is very yummy and finished with a yogurt that was wonderful. And $6! That's a steal by local standards. The service was prompt, efficient and cheerful. It's a little beam of light in our downtown.

Yelp
Now that Slate is gone, I'd say this the best coffee in the city called the Coffee Capital of the USA. The shop is fun and busy and you can watch and smell the roasting process which I think is pretty cool. The staff is courteous and knowledgeable. Three things make great coffee: the beans, the machine and the barista. Elm has it ALL

Yelp
Overall I enjoyed my experience here! I did not come on a day where they were roasting, but would love to come to experience the smells when they do. Ordering was quick and easy. Oat milk latte: standard latte, went well with the butter croissant! Sheng pu'er tea: tea was very light and difficult to taste the notes that were described Yogurt bowl: they serve Seattle granola with yogurt or milk and the granola was so good that we bought a couple of bags! Yummm

Yelp
I stopped by elm coffee around 11:30 on a wednesday and stayed for around three hours to study with a friend! There was a steady stream of people coming in and there's not a lot of seating. I had to wait to snag a shadier spot inside, but I will say the space gets tons of natural light which I loved. If you can find a spot it's a good place to study :) I ordered the large ginger snap latte ($5.50) which I thought was a really decent price! I accidentally forgot to order this iced since I normally don't like hot lattes, but to my surprise, the flavor still came through so I was impressed and not at all disappointed. I thought the interior of the cafe was super cute and minimal! The wifi also worked great and the staff is friendly. I just wish they had a bigger menu and that the space itself was larger.

Yelp
Dr. Frasier Crane's coffee shop was Café Nervosa and Elm Coffee Roasters is mine. Frasier is still one of my favorite shows to watch because it's based in Seattle and it has a lot of funny scenes in the coffee shop. I never turn down an opportunity to get coffee with friends and fam because it's about drinking beverages and catching up with all the drama (chisme/chismis). Everyone's got problems and I'm there to listen about the trials and tribulations of life with a side of coffee or tea. Elm is my favorite coffee shop in Pioneer Square. It's close to so many transportation options all within a 5-10 minute walk: The Water Taxi, the Seattle Ferry Terminal, Sound Transit and Metro buses, Amtrak and Sounder trains, the light rail, and the First Hill street car. I love the aesthetics of this shop. It's clean, cozy, and warm and the staff are patient and welcoming. The customer base has picked up because of the tourist season. The line can get pretty long but the baristas do their best to maintain a high quality of output. I only mention this because I recently visited a coffee shop in Leavenworth. The line was long and the barista was working too fast. She ended up spilling a customer's beverage all over the counter and floor and shouted some expletives. She spent more time cleaning up and remaking that drink which ended up increasing the backlog of orders. Well seasoned, experienced employees like the ones at Elm work with a high quality espresso machine so I understand and appreciate the time and effort they put into preparing my beverage.

Yelp
Elm is an exquisite coffee shop and roaster! The drip coffee was simply delicious. It was strong yet palletable and smooth. The shop alone is very charismatic and the employees are very friendly! I'd like to try the cheddar biscuit next time! Loveeee this place. take a bag home of coffee , you won't regret it !

Yelp
I'm happy that there are a lot of coffee shops in downtown Seattle, with many of them being walking distance from my hotel, but Elm Coffee Roasters was not the greatest one around. It wasn't really what I was expecting to be honest. It's a cute coffee shop, but the coffee itself did not taste great at all. My dad ordered an iced mocha and I ordered a 'one on one', which contained espresso, brewed coffee, and macchiato in two sampler cups. The macchiato was great and had an excellent taste to it, but the espresso/brewed coffee did not taste great at all. The espresso was super sour/bitter, which was too much for me and I couldn't finish. My dad felt the same way with his mocha, with it being too sweet for him. I think he only drank maybe half of it before throwing it out. I did, however, end up finishing the espresso. Meh. I've experienced better. Friendly staff and great service nonetheless.

Yelp
Nice chill cafe that gets a ridiculous amount of afternoon sunlight. Pretty minimalist but overall a nice Pioneer Square spot. I had their spicy house made chai a few years ago and it was quite good (they said it's same recipe today). My drink du jour was an oat decaf latte with their house syrup vanilla. Mmmm, very easy going down and smooth.

Yelp
As a coffee enthusiast, I love going to Elm because of their spectrum of quality drinks. If you like espresso and are not sure what to get, you could always get the 3-in-1 and have a great time being wired at the cafe. My friends and I signed up for their coffee cupping experience, where one of the baristas/roasters walked us through 8 or so different beans! We learned a lot about different regions, how they select beans, and even how they fine tune their roasting process. We even tasted beans processed using new techniques such as thermal shock. It's clear how passionate the staff at this location is about their coffee curation. The experience is $40pp, and you get a free drink afterwards with 50% off any bean purchases! I grabbed a bag of their Jhoan Vergara (notes of starburst), which was my favorite from the cupping. Tip -- they generally lean towards lighter roasts

Yelp
Great coffee and great service! They roast their own beans in house and they are a really good flavor. I like getting their espresso and tonic, super refreshing!
google avatar

Yelp
Adorable, little gem we walked passed while exploring Pioneer Square. The coffee roasting machine in the back caught my attention. If they're roast their own beans, it has to be legit and this place delivered. They also make their own vanilla syrup with a real bean in the bottle! Service was quick, but poor lady seemed to be by herself anthey were quite busy! I was so thirsty but was afraid to ask for a water cause I felt bad I was adding more work for her. What we got: (1) cappuccino (my go to): deep and perfect, took me back to Venice (2) one of each: the espresso was a little too strong for me but the brewed coffee balanced it out well (3) the special of the day, pineapple and citron coffee soda. it was so different and refreshing.

Yelp
I am a coffee fiend, but I enjoy lattes too much and needed to come back to a freshly roasted quality cup o joe. I went a little overboard and ordered their flight, the "one of everything": espresso, brewed coffee, and macchiato with a tonic water. I figured I would really be able to taste the roast and I had some time to kill before attending a Sounders game so I treated myself. I wasn't sure if there is an order in trying these but the brewed coffee was hottest so I took a tiny sip and then saved it for last. I went with the macchiato first because it was the cutest and I really wanted to try it, but halfway I downed the espresso shot and was wired! Loved it. I probably could have stopped here but I still had the brewed coffee and I was here for a good time. The brewed coffee was a bit more watery, but with this intense trio that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. At $5.50 it's a pretty nice experience! This isn't exactly the best space to hang out since seating is quite limited and I'd only come in pairs or alone since the tables are smaller. The ambiance is chill and clean and I found a table in the corner so I had a great time but the line of about 8 people total who came in behind me looked questionable.

Yelp
One of Seattle's most recommended coffee spots, Elm stands up there with the others. This specific location is small but has a nice, clean interior with lots of natural light. Perfect for reading a book or getting some work done. And the latte isn't too bad either. Follow my Instagram @thephotographerfoodie! :)

Liz R.

Yelp
My son suggested getting coffee here while we visited! This place is the BEST! Great ambiance , customer service, coffee, and the decor takes it to the top! Wish we had one in our hometown! A Must go to, If you're a coffee connoisseur !!!!

Yelp
I'm visiting Seattle for a few days. This city obviously has no shortage of neat coffee shops, but I wanted to check out a place that roasts their own beans. This place has quality coffee + cool vibes. Baristas are friendly. Bought some beans to enjoy later.

Yelp
whew-ee what a perfect shot of espresso. i've had elm's coffee before in some cafe, and they've been on my radar, but i'd never been down to their shop. i took a longer midday stroll today and visited for the first time, and boy did it hit the spot. i enjoy lighter roasts generally, but some shops that peddle it can lean a little too much into the thinness and brightness, almost leaving something lacking. elm's standard espresso blend (washed and natural ethiopian, i think i saw on their counter sign) was absolutely perfectly balanced. i got that slight heaviness and mouthfeel i'd been missing at my usual cafe these days, and big big chocolate bar flavor. sweet with the little splash of milk -- the perfect macchiato. the space is quiet and tidy, with the back of house a bit helterskelter with fresh beans in burlap bags. they were also filming something at the time i stopped in. some guy was gesturing with a paper filter under professional lighting. made for an interesting combination of use -- there were people on laptops, the filming, someone dosing beans behind the bar, my coffee being made and the space in the back to work with the beans. all in all a nice lil shop, and such friendly service. love it when we can be serious about coffee but still light and kind with each other. no pretense. i'll be back!

Yelp
The coffee was so good and pretty delicious! One of the best spot for coffee. The quality of of coffee was fantastic. It was smooth flavor, I like the Hazelnut Milk Latte and Brewed coffee. The place was pleasantly good. Great seating and friendly service.
google avatar

Kelli O.

Yelp
Their coffee blend is yummy and at a good price. But if you like to try cool flavored coffee drinks (like myself), this is not the place for you. They only have vanilla, chocolate, and honey. They don't have a lot of seating so if you are looking for a coffee shop to sit in you might want to look elsewhere. Other than that the aesthetic of the shop is super cute!
google avatar

Andy M.

Yelp
Some of the best served coffee in Seattle. These are baristas I bring visitors to when I want to show what coffee is like in this town.
google avatar

Kevin J.

Yelp
Cute and very aesthetic, and they're pretty serious about their COVID safety protocols (December 2021) which I appreciate. Drinks: Tried a latte (standard, no changes) and my SO got a chai. Unfortunately, my latte was a bit...weird? Slightly more acidic tasting than I'd prefer, like the milk was bad, or I made it with an instant coffee mix, or it came out of one of those car dealership coffee machines. The chai was pretty good, although a bit "thin" and watery tasting. Ambience: Super cute and spacious, with some outlets available if you need. They have a small sign on the tables saying essentially not to spend all day there, which is appreciated during COVID-times when tables are scarce and it's hard to share a table with a stranger. Overall: I'd give this a 4-star, but I really can't get over that acidic latte.
google avatar

Prianka S.

Yelp
Elm makes one of the best lattes I've had! The location is very clean and they check for vaccination (big plus!). The espresso in their lattes is very rich and nutty- I believe it's a blend with mostly Guatemalan beans so it's perfect for espresso. I'll be back here!

Grace G.

Yelp
Beautiful shop with nice people. Chai lacked flavor and was a bit watery but it was only one of the many items on their menu.
google avatar

Adam B.

Yelp
This was my first coffee shop stop in Seattle. We arrived 5 minutes before open and we had to wait a few minutes for the one employee to out out the furniture. And...they required us to mask up in spite of being vaccinated already. Mom got her black coffee, I got my chai, which was way too heavy on the ginger. The more chais I drink, the more I realize how hard it is to get a great one. Very inviting, homey atmosphere inside, but it was just an ok chai.
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
This is such a cute coffee shop in the heart of Pioneer Square! The shop itself is bright and airy, and the coffee is delicious and smooth. I got the latte with oat milk and I'd definitely get it again.
google avatar

Justin R.

Yelp
Kinda generic atmosphere: wood floors, wood tables, basically just everything you'd expect out of a coffee shop. They keep the shop kinda dark, maybe some warm lights would be nice to contrast with the cloudiness of Seattle. The coffee was ok: I tried the Colombian on drip which was just like your typical Columbia's coffee, very nutty. I also got a chance to try their Ethiopian espresso which was excellent: very vibrant and juicy. Definitely recommend the coffee flight where you get a cup of drip coffee, a shot of espresso and a macchiato for $5.50.
google avatar

Josh C.

Yelp
Execellent coffee, gorgeous shop, and great staff. Also convenient from the ferry, which is helpful.
google avatar

Matt L.

Yelp
Great service and decently affordable coffee (all iced drinks are in a 16 oz cup). The design of this space is spacious, clean, and the abundance of sunlight really brightens the place up. They have a couple of tables (around 8) and several bar seats. I went midday on a Thursday and it was easy for me to grab a seat with a table. The vibes are real chill, so it's easy to get work done here or do some mid-trip journaling. Wifi password is "coffeeisgood."
google avatar

Elizabeth K.

Yelp
The filter coffee was fabulous black; smooth with little acidity. The latte was nutty with great flavor. Coffee is definitely A++. The cardamom bun was AMAZING. If you're not familiar with cardamom, it's fruity and spicy at the same time (not hot spicy, just... spicy). The cardamom bun reminded me of a grown up version of a fruit loop donut--less sugar, more texture, and just the right amount of flavor. The farmer's pocket was a great savory foil to the bun; the pastry was on point and really flaky and moist. Filling was the cherry on top. Great place for a light breakfast.
google avatar

Molly I.

Yelp
It's been a while since I stopped into Elm but I found myself there this afternoon. I remember them having a housemade hazelnut milk (I think) - that's gone and the current alternative milk offerings are simply soy or oat.... So I went oat, which is fine but I do usually enjoy almond milk more... And do people still actually order soy? Coffee was good (smooth. Tasty latte.), pastries were present, ambiance was calm and there were a few small tables where you could set up shop. I'd only go here if you actually like coffee... and want a good cup, with minimal frills - which is what I enjoy.
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
So so yummy! I really enjoyed the latte with oat milk! The drink was very smooth (and slightly sweet) but it made it very creamy. Would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Zavier J.

Yelp
Wonderful service, talented barista's, plus great coffee! Had an espresso from Guatemala! Nice chocolate notes, plus an 8oz latte with a beautiful Rossetti on! Tasted as good as it looked!
google avatar

Tyler S.

Yelp
Phenomenal coffee. When I'm in the neighborhood which is not often, I always make a stop at Elm.
google avatar

Yelp
This is such a lovely space in Pioneer square. It was rather busy on a Saturday morning trip, but I immediately loved the laid back vibe of the space. I ordered the "One of Everything", which is an Espresso, Macchiato and brewed coffee (with Topo Chico mineral water). It is fantastic value for money, and the coffee was amazing. I sat at the bar so it was nice watching the barista make coffees. My friend joined me too and we were able to enjoy some conversations in the nice atmosphere there. I really like the cups that they used as well, felt very homely. They sell some treats too, though I didn't get any. Overall, I am glad this place worked out for me, I really enjoyed their coffee flavor (which can be such a personal preference), and the service was quick. Very simple type of coffee shop which I loved!
google avatar

Connie A.

Yelp
I'm so disappointed that this place did not work out. I wish I could give Elm more than just one star - but this is all that it deserves. Probably less than that if I'm being completely honest. My friend and I came in one morning before work and the shop was pretty empty, with some people grabbing coffee to go. We ordered the "one of everything" to sample and our total was close to $5 so prices are decent. However, as we situated ourselves in the CORNER of the store to take photos, the female barista leaned over the counter and asked that we not be in the way of their customers coming in. Clearly, we were not in anyone's way nor did we make any noises at all. The fact that she shamed us for quietly taking photos in the corner and promoting them on social media is appalling but oh - you are not ready for what's next. As we began drinking our coffee, I peered down and noticed a strand of HAIR floating in the foam of the macchiato. It was obviously not my friend nor I's hair since the texture, color, and length are vastly different from ours. Safe to say we did not touch the macchiato. The drip coffee tasted fine, nothing special. And the espresso did not leave a good taste in my mouth, in an acidic sort of way. Needless to say - won't be coming back - for good reasons.
google avatar

Elaine L.

Yelp
I got "one of everything" - i.e. and espresso, macchiato and brewed coffee for $5 and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Macchiato was top notch. The place looks pretentious and whatever, but the lady at the register was super nice and helpful!!! Nice clean little spacious coffee shop with a peaceful vibe. Fiancé got an iced latte. Delicious!
google avatar

Shirin B.

Yelp
A really nice place to chill and get some work done while enjoying a cup of coffee. My cappuccino was slightly on the acidic side, but the vibes of this place are on point, and the tiny roasting plant in the back is pretty cool. Seating is limited though! btw: they close around 5 as listed on google maps!
google avatar

Tracy D.

Yelp
Simple, slick, modern and spacious with good amount of seatings. They also have a glass wall so you can see how the beans are roasted. The menu is straigth forward and their coffee has an acidic taste. I got the vanilla latte (4/5) Overall, super chilled and cute coffee shop.

Amy W.

Yelp
I ordered hot chocolate, but it's not really hot and I waited for a long time. This hot chocolate is not rich and deep. Not recommended. But having the breakfast time here is good
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
You lose a star for not having Carmel, the rest is a quite subtle yet friendly local coffee shop amount tech shops in the area of the beards are a indicator. The guy up front wasn't snobby and was simple sorry we do t have that. Which is weird as they say they make vanilla in house which we know they are not growing their own vanilla beans... they buy someone else's vanilla bean and steam it or steep in alcohol. So go buy a jar of Carmel for people who want Carmel. Outside of that pedantic annoyance this shop is nice and I'll be back. It's not going to stop me asking if they have vanilla why can't you buy Carmel. This artisanal craze that hits businesses I'm just not understanding at all why they feel that "we only sell what we make in house." Well you have a burner and anybody with an hour of time could fold butter cream and sugar into Carmel... with the two burners sitting at the end of the bar... mmmm?
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
This space is definitely a more modern coffee shop setup. It is a nice space and the logo was modern and smart. I was excited to try this place as they roasted their own beans. We ordered a cortado s as nd a macchiato. We found that the beans were pretty one note; not a lot of character or richness to them. The drinks were prepared well, but the overall coffee experience was lacking. Seems this place may be emphasizing style over substance.
google avatar

S H.

Yelp
Delicious coffee, great roasts up good. Nice spot to sit, limited seating so you might not always get a seat.
google avatar

Pauli D.

Yelp
Gotta love an aesthetic coffee shop that actually has good coffee. Amazing. We stopped in mid afternoon on a Saturday and the cafe was mildly busy. The baristas there were super friendly and had our order out so quickly. I got an iced latte $5 The latte smelled fresh and tastes smooth. It had a perfect ratio of milk to bitterness aka I didn't feel like I had to pour sugar in. Sometimes when I go to smaller coffee shops I feel bad for not wanting to drink black coffee and their lattes are crazy bitter. But I really enjoyed the calm atmosphere w a good drink. Plus they sell some merch and coffee accessories so you kno they aint just for show But if you wanna add sugar or something I guess you have to ask? Next time I'll come back, order something different and ask more questions rather than stay 5 mins
google avatar

Cherie C.

Yelp
Very hip. Good coffee. Good pastries. Staff were friendly. It's a touristy area, but this hip spot seems tucked away, a bit of a refuge from the busy Pioneer Square crowd. You can watch folks roasting beans while you enjoy your coffee, and you can get some fresh roasted beans to use at home. It's simple inside, and there's not much more to say about it other than you'll get a great cup of coffee or a great espresso drink here.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a wonderful, local coffee roaster located in the Pioneer Square neighborhood. First of all, the place is absolutely gorgeous. Since it's located in Pioneer Square, Seattle's oldest neighborhood, the building is older, with exposed brick and has an industrial feel. But the best part of the decor are the floor to ceiling front windows, exposing natural light throughout the entire place. If you're lucky to grab a table by the window then do so. Even on a rainy day the place seems to be bright and well-lit. And most importantly, the coffee is awesome. I can't tell you how much I try to support local roasters than big chains. We're so fortunate in Seattle to have many local coffee roasters, doing their thang, and Elm Coffee Roasters is just one of them. You can even witness all the roasting being done towards the back of the place, where there are large display windows so customers can see in. I ordered the One of Everything, which comes with an espresso shot, a latte sample, soda water and a cup of good ol' coffee. Everything was bold, refreshing and the jolt I needed to start the day. They also serve London Plane pastries and Mighty-O Doughnuts. You can appreciate any place that partners with other local companies. I had the French Toast Mighty-O Doughnut, which tasted exactly like the breakfast dish and was filling. The staff was really nice and was happy to make any recommendations for coffee items or grub, and saw that they recognized a lot of regulars coming in, making conversation with them. I also loved during my visit on a Sunday morning there were quite a few people, reading books with their DOGS! Any place that's dog-friendly instantly makes me a fan. I highly recommend this place if you're in Pioneer Square for a good cup of coffee.

Yelp
I love that each independent coffee shop in Seattle has it's own personality. I like to try different coffee shops and roasters on the way into work to relax a bit before starting the day it's my quality time for myself. I love the look of this place old brick wall, reclaimed wood, nice airy feel to the space and lots of natural lighting. Staff is friendly one of the few places I've had someone bring my coffee to my table means they're paying attention to their customers.

Yelp
I got amazing coffee here. The affogato is unreal and so delicious. Definitely will be back again.

Yelp
Good cappuccinos and good americano. Solid coffee place, def a fancier place, but if you're there for good coffee then that's all you need.

Yelp
This place looked promising as we walked in since the place had a cool, clean atmosphere and the cashier was friendly, but the coffee was a disappointment. I got an iced latte with their homemade hazelnut milk, which I thought was okay initially but ended up tossing it because I couldn't drink it anymore. The hazelnut milk flavor did not pair well with their acidic coffee and the iced americano was too light. There are much better coffee shops around the area so I wouldn't come here again.

Yelp
Got myself a very small but tasty oat latte and a window seat on a very sunny fall day. Great first experience and I'll be back! My complaints are that I wish there would be more outlets to charge laptops and phones. There's one if you sit by the bar, and you've gotta ask for the wifi password which is kinda annoying. Parking is reinforced around this area, so it's not the best study or work spot if you're looking for a place to work for long hours. It's great for a business meeting and catch-up with a friend.
