The Best Restaurants in East Cambridge | Eater Boston

"Elmendorf sells all kinds of baking supplies, from flour to whisks to cookbooks, and it has a great cafe as well. Stop by for an indulgent breakfast egg sandwich and a latte, which you can enjoy in the colorful outdoor seating setup." - Karen Wilber

Elmendorf Baking Supplies & Cafe - Review - East Cambridge - Boston - The Infatuation

"If The Great British Baking Bake Off was a coffee shop, it would basically be Elmendorf. This adorable spot sells a large variety of pastries (we like the lemon-thyme scones), and also doubles as a cookbook and baking supply store. There are only about six tables in the whole place, but if you can find a seat by the window, you’ll be saying “What a lovely scon!” in no time." - Joel Ang

Went on a Sunday around 10:30 AM. I love the character of this establishment; having an abundance of baking supplies and books were so cute for the anesthetic of the business! Prices of all items were relatively overpriced, but fair if highly interested in the product. I ordered the egg sandwich; loved that I was able to customize it with jalapeños, arugula, and options of bacon or sausage; was disappointed that neither my arugula or jalapeños got onto my egg sandwich, which was an additional $1 to my bill. The pistachio latte was very very good, highly recommended for one of their seasonal drinks. After 5-8 minutes of placing my order, there was a link wrapping outside of the door way, and I feel like my order was forgotten- I was waiting for approx. 25 minutes until I got my meal. The pastries were fresh and delicious! I would recommend this for breakfast, although be prepared for the wait with small walking space in their cafe!

I got the Iced Coffee (and I added whole milk), Iced Chai Latte, and Lemon Tart made with almond flour. The Iced Coffee was a bit too bitter even after the addition of milk. The chai latte was nice because of the spices, but it was a bit too diluted. However, the lemon tart was a showstopper; the tartness and strong lemon flavor complimented the creaminess of the curd filling. The crispy almond flour crust was a very unique twist.

Super cute shop with sandwiches and treats and great for gifts if you need something unique. Chicken sandwich was delicious however not much chicken inside.

Google
Such a cute lil spot! I love their specials (campfire fog was a great drink!) and their chocolate chip cookie is just amazing!

Google
Overall a nice location! The coffee is good and the staff is usually friendly and informative. One critique is that their sandwiches are usually quite sloppy and messy, with too much squished in them to be easy or clean to eat. The jambon sandwich with pickled mushrooms is actually pretty bad in my opinion but it’s the only bad thing I’ve had there, overall. Decent place to buy kitchen gifts, quality baking supplies, cookbooks, and freshly milled grains/flours. It’s also got great ambience to sit and have a bite with a friend.

Google
Such a cute shop! I got the pistachio latte and the pineapple basil spritzer, both were delicious. I’ll be back for baking supplies in the future too

This is the cutest corner of cambridge. There’s nowhere better than this treasure of a shop/cafe. It feels like you’re stepping into a time capture back to a sweeter world. Every drink is inventive and delicious, from the smoky campfire hot cocoa to the earl grey lapsang suchong latte; every treat is wildly scrumptious, especially their choc chip cookie that uses some secret amount of a rare wheat; and the vibes are impeccable! Always worth the walk.

Google
Excellent ice jasmine tea and coffee. Whole chunks of caramelized ginger in the ginger cookies! Update June 2025: They've upped their bakery and iced drinks menu SO HARD and I love it! The lime and coriander biscuits and the cherry cobbler are my favorite. They've done a great job at controlling the sugar content of their pastries, with just the right amount of sweetness without being cloying or overwhelming the flavors of the spices. The iced hojicha latte is sooo good, no sugar need at all!

Yelp
Elmendorf Baking Supplies & Cafe is consistently a disappointment. The service is painfully slow, and even with just 2-3 people in line, you're stuck waiting 10-15 minutes. The coffee is a disaster--always bitter and off-tasting. It's like they have no idea how to use their machine or what a latte should actually taste like. What they serve isn't even close to a proper latte; it's sour, unpleasant, and undrinkable. As for their baked goods, they are ridiculously overpriced. The portions are laughably small, and you feel like they're treating their customers as fools. Every time I make the mistake of going there, I regret spending my money on their terrible coffee and minuscule slices of cake. I always tell myself I won't return, but every once in a while, I give them another shot--and it's always the same disaster. There are far better places around. One star, and that's being generous.

Yelp
One of the highlights of my recent trip to New England! My sister and I were wandering around and stumbled upon Elmendorf at lunch time, so we stopped in for a bite and a break from the heat. The interior is both a cafe and shop, with cook books and cute kitchen items! Love that. (There is outdoor seating too.) For food we both ordered the Eggplant Bahn Mi, which includes honey-soy marinated eggplant on a crunchy ciabatta with fresh and pickled veggies, loads of herbs, mayo and hot peppers ($13). So. Much. Flavor! OMG. There is a spicy option, indeed spicy, so if you're a mild person don't add the hot peppers. I'm already missing this sandwich and it's only been a couple weeks since I enjoyed it. Everyone working there was friendly, and the pastries looked good too! Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

Yelp
Stopped by on a Saturday and the cafe was decently busy, but we luckily got a free table. First of all, the service was amazing! The workers were patient as my friends and I asked questions to figure out what we wanted, and so friendly! The coconut matcha was super coconuty but masked the matcha flavor- recommend for people who don't love the taste of matcha. We thought the turkey sandwich was nothing special, but the peruvian chicken was AMAZING! The ahi verde sauce was delicious, and I made sure to eat every last drop off my plate :) The five spice cookie is also a must try! It's sweet, spiced, and a delicious balance between all of the flavors. Will definitely be back, and recommend you try it out!

Yelp
Elmendorf is legit! They have amazing drinks and baked goods. I visited their stand at a fair and they had a bunch of options to choose from - I went with a cookie with rainbow sprinkles and a slice of the pumpkin chocolate bread, both of which were so delicious and decadent! I love how they have a bunch of seasonal items, perfect for the fall. I once stopped by and tried the hojita latte and it was simply amazing - so flavorful and absolutely hit the spot. It's a bit unfortunate that they don't really have anywhere to sit inside. The space seems to be a bit cluttered, as I believe they also sell products that are strewn around the store. They do have some outdoor seating, but it seems like it's mainly a to go type place, especially in the colder months.

Beth P.

Yelp
The baristas are so kind and helped us out with making a hot chocolate special for us with a dietary restriction! Thank you! From my little sister, "can we add as many extra stars as possible?"
google avatar

Jess E.

Yelp
had the best egg and cheese sandwich of my life here the other day with a maple fog - both were absolutely wonderful and the inside was lit with string lights and filled with baking supplies !amazing

Yelp
Probably one of the best ham sandwiches I've ever had. It's on par for Boston prices a nice $14 for a sandwich. It was a good sandwich, it was very filling sandwich, it was a delicious sandwich. I really liked the ham, arugula, caramelized onion mix. It was decadent
google avatar

Connie C.

Yelp
beautiful and cute little shop with delicious sandwiches that are mostly made to order and pastries. the bread used for the sandwiches is really good and most of the items in the shop are things you would never think existed unless you knew about baking! like freshly ground flour and obscure cookbooks
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic croissants & kouign amman and lovely, interesting drinks (hojicha lattes, etc.). The staff is very friendly and efficient, and the space is super cozy. Also excellent spot to get hard-to-find baking supplies like black cocoa and specialty flours.
google avatar

Yelp
Great atmosphere and everything the heart could yarn for in baking books, goods and ingredients.

Yelp
I needed some tools for an upcoming baking project and at a friend's recommendation, decided to stop by Elmendorf. The shop was smaller than I anticipated, but still had a fairly wide array of tools, cookbooks, and ingredients. I purchased a cake spatula, a bench scraper, and a cake round. The staff were very friendly and helped me find everything I was looking for. I also decided to get a quick snack. I ordered a blueberry struesel muffin and a small iced coffee (16oz). The muffin was tender and not too sweet, filled with blueberries and complete with a crispy, sugary struesel top. The iced coffee was strong, but very good. While I'm sure there's certain products that Elmendorf doesn't carry, it has a fairly wide selection for such a small store. With the addition of good food and nice staff members, it definitely became my top choice for cooking/specialty food stores.

Yelp
What a gem! I was only visiting the area and I would love to visit again next time I'm in Boston. Freshly milled high quality flours are labeled with the near by farm! I grabbed a few to bring home for bread making. I also got some Valrhona chocolate, sparkling sugar, and had a nice cup of coffee. This store has so much to offer in a small space. Highly recommend!

Eliza A.

Yelp
The most precious neighborhood bakery and coffee shop. Cozy seating. Turkey sandwiches are delish.

Yelp
Found my new favorite lunch spot in East Cambridge! They are so friendly and have such cute items in their shop. Was excited to try one of their sandwiches, on delicious fresh baked bread. I had a turkey sandwich- with slaw and apple inside. Got a small bottle of Natalie's OJ to go with it. Perfect lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
super cute and small coffee shop! the baristas are super nice. they make very smooth lattes (i can taste how nutty the milk is too)!
google avatar

Fay M.

Yelp
Hands down the best matcha latte (with oat milk) in Cambridge and one of my go-to places overall! Kind staff and a great collection of baking supplies to shop from while you are waiting for your coffee.
google avatar

Melissa D.

Yelp
The quality of their grains is so apparent in their baked goods--their banana walnut muffin was actually life changing. As a muffin reluctant, it was amazing. Plus the shop is so cute!
google avatar

Shaquille A.

Yelp
Came here this morning on a whim and needed coffee STAT, the inside was cute and the two women working at the register were very kind and pleasant to talk to. I got an iced coffee which had a very fresh taste, and it was only $4. The baked goods smelled delicious, I may come back this weekend to try some! The atmosphere was very cute. Definitely a spot to visit if you are in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Incredible! They mill their own flour from Maine-grown grains plus excellent curated collection of baking tools & supplies like meringue powder. I bought coarse cornmeal Right across from Mayflower Poultry. The nicest staff, thumbs up on their sandwiches, coffee & pastries, too.
google avatar

Bailee P.

Yelp
This is a very interesting little shop! Cookbooks and other baking tools are scattered about in the small nook. I got a latte that was pretty good! I wish I had more time to look around at all of the neat things that are for sale.

Joshua G.

Yelp
Staff is kind. Dried beans are high-quality. I've enjoyed coffee and pastries when I've had them.
google avatar

Yelp
Great baked goods, great coffee -- a terrific little coffee shop that just happens to have cool and useful baking tools and equipment and entertaining cookbooks to browse. It's a great mash-up. We tried the gingerbread tower cake, the Kouign Amann, and the sticky bun on various occasions. All impressive in their own ways (apparently from AJ King Bakeries in Salem). The espresso is smooth and seriously good, and the service super friendly to the point that you'll feel like a regular in no time. At the time we visited the couple who own the place were also manning the counter. They seem passionate about their endeavor, capable and knowledgeable, and like just really likable people you'd want to hang out with. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood, and probably a trip to East Cambridge if you're not.

Yelp
I love this place, and this review is long overdue. I am in the store at least once a week for either supplies or snacks and to bother the owners, Teddy and Alyssa, for tips and recommendations. Anything as a baker that you could possibly need, they will have it. Citric acid? Check. Gelatin sheets? Of course. Malted milk powder? Duh. You need einkorn, they have einkorn. Spelt, they've got it. And about a dozen other heritage corns, oats, grains, and wheat. They even have Carolina Gold rice. Getting into sourdough? Teddy has a beautiful starter and you can pick up your banneton, lame, and a copy of "Flour, Salt, Water, Yeast" or "Tartine Bread" here. You can also pick up fresh yeast, high quality chocolate, apricot seeds, candied and dried fruits, food grade lavender, and just about any niche baking ingredient that you could possibly imagine. And baking utensils? They've got you covered. Digital scales, Nordic Ware pans, Ateco pastry tips, assorted cookie cutters, wooden mooncake molds, tortilla presses, etc. And if you're a fresh milled wheat fanatic, you can even buy your own Mockmill here and take your grain to mill at home - but if you're local, they'll mill any of their grains on demand to whatever level of fineness you need. Round out your shopping with adorable linens, aprons, and oven mitts that make for great gifts. And their prices are insanely good, so there's no need to order online when you can pick it up down the street. This place is heaven for any baker, and that's before you even get to the cafe part. They serve Barrington coffee (and you can grab a bag to go), and seasonally you'll find treats like apple cider and pinole. The baked goods are fantastic: gooey soft chocolate chip cookies, flavorful scones, and whatever Alyssa feels like baking up that day (the ginger and pear muffins are my daughter's favorite). AJ King pastries round out the breakfast fare, and you'll find delicious sandwiches made with their own bread. This is truly one of my favorite places in Cambridge.

Yelp
I just went to this cute little baking shop and bakery for the first time, and I'm in love. The staff was very knowledgeable and were able to tell me about different yeasts for different purposes. They sell both cute and practical supplies, and they have great pastries (many from AJ Flour). I tried the goat cheese and olive scone which was different and tasty with a little kick and the Kouign Aman, which was pretty good (Flour's is still my favorite). My husband thought the chocolate chip cookie was exceptional too!
google avatar

Yelp
Such delicious baked goods, especially the focaccia on Sundays. I would travel far and wide for this place!

Tatyana Z.

Yelp
Great coffee, desserts, sandwiches and more! I come every week, multiple times a week on my way to work as the lattes are delicious and strong and the freshly baked bread sandwiches are made on is truly amazing. If you like to bake or are in need of baking supplies or cookbooks, elmendorf has a beautiful and wide selection. They have a whole section for the great British baking show host and contestant cookbooks and have great books on Asian, Eastern European, French, and international baking. High quality ingredients for baking - from chocolate to flour -can easily be found here as well. Everyone at the store is friendly and helpful, making it a pleasure to go in to grab a coffee or snack. My only complaint is that elmendorf is open just Wed-Sun and closed Mondays and Tuesdays but otherwise this is my favorite bakery in my area and in Cambridge/ Boston overall.

Yinlei Y.

Yelp
Cool place with interesting selection of baking supplies. Their coffee and sandwiches are delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
I happened upon Elmendorf when Yelp actually recommended it to me as a new local place to check out. My boyfriend and I finally made our way over there before running some errands. We did go during winter so this review is SUPER delayed (sorry). He got a coffee and I got a hot chocolate, both were super delicious. Some of the best hot cocoa I've ever had! The place is small and great as a cafe for some piece and quiet while you do some work. As the name mentions, they do have a lot of beautiful looking baking supplies. I did not buy anything as they're a tiny bit expensive, but expectedly so. Unfortunately, this place is a bit out of the way for me so I probably won't end up coming back in the foreseeable future, but I'd recommend it for anyone in the area!
google avatar

Yelp
KOUIGN-AMANN! Who the h*** is AJ King and why has he/she destroyed my diet? The good people at Elmendorf educated me on this. AJ King is a Salem bakery that is now delivering fresh croissant and croissant-like delectables to Cambridge. I have had kouign-ammans at the "best" places including Manhattan and Montréal bakeries renowned for this item. I bought one on a whim and after one bite, stood up and shouted at the workers "OMG, life changing"...(they of course responded "I know right?! We think so too!") Kouign-ammans have relatively few ingredients but are technically challenging to get right, often too flaky, too hard, too dry. This version is flaky, sugar-crispy, and most of all, has a buttery-moist center. ("¿Imposible? ¡No!") This little store also sells beautiful cook books, gift-able baking supplies and I am glad they know their pastries well. My taste buds are grateful, my waistline not so much. Support East Cambridge local businesses like this, they're gems!

Yelp
Do not sleep on this place as one of the best coffee shops in the Boston area. Amazing lattes and maybe the best breakfast sandwiches in the area. The breakfast sandwich has the fluffiest eggs and comes on a cracked pepper brioche that knocks my pants right off.
google avatar

Gabrielle R.

Yelp
Love this place! Quick service, good prices on tea, and friendly staff. Came in to work on a paper, and I liked the jazz they were playing so much that I didn't even listen to my own music. They have a great variety of baking supplies, I'll for sure come back to check that out more.
google avatar

Shawn W.

Yelp
Elmendorf began as a kickstarter project, designed to be a hub for all things related to baking, a store that supplies equipment as well as grains milled in-house, a community space, a cafe, a place for baking classes, etc. It opened recently, so some of these goals are still being realized, but Elmendorf is well on its way. Operated by a friendly and knowledgeable husband-wife duo, Elmendorf offers delicious pastries, good coffee, and an exceptionally-curated selection of teas. The ambience and decor (even the music) are on point--a blend of sophistication and homey comfort. There's just something about baking that reminds you of hearth and home. Tuesday through Saturday, Elmendorf is open until 7pm (Sunday until 4pm), which is way later than most cafes in East Cambridge. It's nice to have a cafe I could go to when I still have some late work to catch up on over a cup of coffee/tea. I have been living in East Cambridge for several years now, and Elmendorf is a wonderful addition that I really hope stays around for many years to come.

Yelp
I stopped by today and really really loved everything I got. The olive walnut focaccia was my favorite, sooo good. My sandwich was great, and my maple fog latte was delicious. The vibes were also great and I enjoyed the outdoor seating. Great stuff in the shop too, super cool books.

Yelp
Just got baked goods to go but they were very good as was the atmosphere and the staffs attitude. Neat little place.
google avatar

Yelp
Great cafe/bakery and baking supply shop. They have a nice selection of baking supplies including baking equipment, cookbooks, and ingredients. The ingredients range from the common chocolates, yeast, nuts, and baking mix-ins to hard to find extracts, in-house milled grains, and more. The baked goods include cookies and cake slices as well as pastries such as morning buns, croissants and kouign amann. As a baking fanatic I hope this new business does well and I'll be back once I figure out what new baking recipes I'm going to tackle next.
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
Yes, bakery supplies, and beyond! The cafe serves top notch Americanos and delicious baked goods from a North Shore supplier.
google avatar

Colleen C.

Yelp
Wow! Baking supplies that cannot be found anywhere else combined with delicious baked treats. Super unpretentious nice people with a warm welcoming environment to work and relax in. Love this place.

Essah C.

Yelp
Awesome food, awesome owners and an awesome place to grab coffee. Must try the breakfast sandwich. Not typically a fan of ham but loved it in this sandwich.

Yelp
Finally writing my first Yelp review because I just had to contribute to all the wonderful reviews of Elmendorf after a few years of going pretty regularly. Elmendorf is one of our favorite spots in the Boston area for the food, beverages, service, and overall vibes. Alyssa and Teddy are incredibly friendly as well as helpful if you've got any baking questions. We really like the chocolate chip cookie (the ideal classic chocolate chip cookie), the goat cheese olive scone, and the kouign amann from A&J King, but really we've never had a bad thing there. The breakfast sandwich with peppery brioche is particularly excellent. It's nice to be able to walk around the shop and look at the new cookbooks and specialty supplies while waiting for my order to come out. I've bought aprons, dish towels, popcorn, various flours, pearl sugar, chocolate chips, sprinkles, chocolate tahini, gifts for friends, etc. and have never been disappointed. In grad school (pre-COVID) I did a lot of reading and essay-writing there since the atmosphere is cozy and calm. I encourage folks to buy their cookbooks, supplies, and ingredients from Elmendorf rather than Amazon or other big businesses. Support good people and good products!
google avatar

Margot H.

Yelp
I had the most wonderful experience at Elmendorf. I ordered their specialty cardamom latte and 5 spice cookie, with some assistance from the kind and helpful baristas! While I waited for my food and drink, I perused the store, which has a great array of speciality baking supplies, cookbooks, and appliances. My latte was fabulous--the flavors played together wonderfully--and the cookie was among the best I've ever had. It was spicy, the perfect mix of chewy and crispy, and the perfect mid morning snack! I cannot wait to return here again, hopefully with some friends and family in tow

Yelp
Loved the place! Coffee is good, pastries are amazing and the place improved a lot since the shop changed name. A lot more happier, the owner is a lovely young lady that is eager to help you with anything you need. The place has 5 tables, if you can catch one of those enjoy! It's a nice place to catch up with a friend or study or work. I torre like me you're gonna love every detail of this shop. I totally recommend this place. They're open until 6 pm almost every day !

Yelp
I visit Elmendorf regularly, and it's my favorite bakery in all of Boston and Cambridge. The service is so personable and prompt, and everything here tastes fantastic. If you come for weekday lunch, the bread for the sandwiches has just the right amount of chew, and the fillings are fabulous (my favorite is the mozzarella, pesto, and tomato sandwich, but I've had all of them and enjoyed each one thoroughly). If you visit for breakfast or weekend brunch, their egg sandwich is fabulous: the egg is a scrambled-but-not-dry thick layer and the bun is, as with the bread for the sandwiches during lunch, certainly not an afterthought. You can get oatmeal here, too, which can help you switch up your breakfast game. The biggest reason I come to Elmendorf is because the pastries are off-the-charts delicious. I like to switch up what I buy, but among my personal favorites are their ginger molasses cookies (which are legitimately the best ginger cookies I have ever, ever tasted), strawberry rhubarb pie (but it's only in season for a short time!), and apple pie. The sugar and chocolate chip cookie choices (regularly available) are also excellent. And although I'm not a connoisseur of coffee or tea, I always find that they have things I like on offer to drink. On top of all of their lovely offerings, they also have a stock of baking supplies that make me positively green with envy. If I could have a shopping spree anywhere in the city, I'd want it to be here. Keep up the great work, Elmendorf!

Yelp
Some niche markets overflow with passion, but lack deep knowledge. Others have deep knowledge, but their passion isn't on full display. Elmendorf's has an abundance of passion, knowledge, AND fantastic customer service! I came in, first, to check the place out and ended up asking for advice on sourdough. I received great advice about how to DIY it, but left with some freshly fed Elmendorf's sourdough starter and great upkeep instructions. Since then I've bought excellent local flour, freshly milled, that made my early sourdough experiments DELICIOUS. I also purchased a proofing basket which came with great tips for usage. My only regret is I haven't tried their food, pastries, or drinks, but since I live nearby I'm sure I will soon! Thanks for being great new neighbors, Alyssa and Teddy.
google avatar

Chase B.

Yelp
We love Elmendorf: excellent coffee drinks, stellar (and I mean stellar) baked goods, friendly, genuine service team, and downright adorable atmosphere. We've loved everything we've bought here. The ham sandwich is super delicious, but grab it while you can! A welcome addition to the East Cambridge neighborhood!

Sydney W.

Yelp
Incredible selection of baking supplies, great food (especially the cookies) and very friendly staff. I can't recommend this place enough whether you need flour or just a quick lunch option.

Khue T.

Yelp
Hubby found this place for me as a birthday present. I was in LOVE! Been looking for freshly milled flours and they've got the good stuff from local farms. Asked for rye chops and got a bag to order. Can't wait to bake some sourdough. I'll be coming back!

A Y.

Yelp
Such a fun little shop! You will spend all of your money because they have every baking tool you can think of. They always have some really good pastries too.

Yelp
This is a wonderful spot that serves up great coffee, sandwiches and pastries. They also have a wonderful baking section, with books, flour, chocolate and everything else in between. I usually atop in for a weekend coffee when I'm out and about within East Cambridge and would highly recommend this place for snacks or if your trying to impress someone with a pie.

Yelp
Just wanted to update my review, based on my experiences during the Coronavirus outbreak. Rather than closing completely, I was very glad that the owners offered curbside pickup. They even delivered my large order of baking supplies to me at home, which was exceptionally kind of them, as I didn't have access to a car during their pickup window. I look forward to the store reopening so that I can go back to get more of their wonderful pastries, but for now, at least I have the supplies I need to bake at home. My very best wishes to them for a successful reopening in the near future.
