A Coffee-Obsessive’s Guide to Drinking the Best Coffee in Vancouver | Bon Appétit

"Elysian is a small chain that roasts its own coffee, with cafés that have a consistent, pleasantly minimalist aesthetic, in some of the most convenient locations around the city. Its airy Mt. Pleasant location sits on a quiet leafy intersection, a neighborhood that is an eclectic mashup of residential homes and small businesses." - ByChris Morocco

Google
The space is well organized and you don't feel overwhelmed by a crowd. The coffee was good, especially the latte! I wish there was a chocolate croissant there, but the other options were good. The books there were very interesting!

V Y

Google
Flat white was pretty solid, but their matcha latte takes the cake. It's definitely one of the better ones I've had and the flavour of the matcha was strong. The scone is relatively average, but the egg muffin was quite unique and delicious. The interior was nice and spacious. One annoying thing that isn't the fault of the coffee shop is the lack of free street parking. It's pretty much non-existent so be prepared to pay for your parking.

Google
Had a great experience! Loved the decor, it was bright, inviting, and perfect for people-watching with those big windows. The setting was comfortable, but the real game changer? Offering me sparkling water with my drink order…instant win.

Google
Delicious cappuccino and almond croissant with raspberry filling. The filling is amazingly delicious, not too sweet at all! Staff are very friendly. Overall great experience.

Google
This is my favourite location of Elysian Coffee! It is located at a street corner so the view is very good, and the store is also spacious and bright! We tried the cherry hot chocolate and it was very tasty!!

Google
We visited this branch of Elysian for the first time after passing so many times on our way to or from Cambie. Now we regret not coming sooner. It's a great coffee shop - really, really good Americano, absolutely delicious Friand and egg muffin. The location is perfect - off busy Broadway - and with an open space that is surrounded by windows. Instead of just passing by, we're now going to make a point of stopping each time! Don't forget to try the Friand with your coffee.

Google
Elysian is a bright and spacious neighbourhood coffee shop in East Vancouver. This location is warm, inviting and relaxing. There is an assortment of table heights and bar like window seating throughout the space. We had the seasonal hot chocolate special and it was delicious!

Google
Good place to sit and talk while enjoying their tasty baked treats and a coffee. The spelt cookie wasn’t as dense as I expected but it was still pretty good.

Yelp
Food: much dedication comes from a love of Roastery, expertise brighten up people in the neighborhood, balanced pairings of pastries made of fresh local ingredients Service: staffs are patient and welcoming, knowledgable about the beans, provide comforting recommendations for pairing Ambiance: based on the volume of traffic this location gets, it is safe to say it's well received by the locals, coffee lovers have made this a stop on their walks and wonders around the mount pleasant area
google avatar

Yelp
great place with friendly service and a wide variety of coffees and treats. Didn't get to sample much of the menu, but the coffee was hot and tasty and service was with a smile! Was walking distance from where we stayed so it was a great spot!

Andrea R.

Yelp
This place does not offer WiFi to its customers. A joke. If you're looking for a place to get some work done while drinking coffee, don't go here.
google avatar

Leslie T.

Yelp
They do not serve a London Fog, and no mention of it until you complain about it. Service was poor. A smile and an apology goes a long way. Thanks Les
google avatar

Yelp
Wow, started going to this coffee shop more often recently. Mostly because I like their medium roast. Just as I was leaving the shop this afternoon, the staff mentioned they are distributing left overs to charities and to whoever is i need... Fantastic and thank you!!!
google avatar

Clara Y.

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee shops! Not only is it super cute inside, but I love that it doesn't have wifi for people to stay plugged in. I love their coffees, especially their flat white and their mocha with oat milk. I also love their chocolate walnut cookies and usually get them in a pack as its cheaper that way. One cookie is quite filling.
google avatar

Yelp
A great coffee shop away from the crowd and main streets in Vancouver. It is more comfortable drinking coffee here. The interior design is minimalist and the cafe is very spacious having an empty area that is separating the counter and cashier with the tables and chairs. Customers can sit and enjoy their coffee and chat with their friends or study or do their work without interruption. We ordered a regular latte and one with soy milk. Both tasted really good. I had tried latte at different Elysian cafe in Vancouver. None of them disappointed me including this one. Thumbs up! I really liked this cafe. People who live and work in this neighbourhood should feel grateful to have a good coffee shop around. :)

Yelp
Warning: NO WI-FI. If you need internet to get your work done, I would suggest going somewhere else. It's too bad because the the noise level is very low in case you need to concentrate. However I came here to catch up with a friend and I felt like I had to whisper a bit, which was kind of uncomfortable lol. It was a really short walking distance after getting off the 99. And it's pretty close to restaurants in the olympic village or mount pleasant area if you want to grab a bite in the area. I ordered an americano which I thought was just, average. None the less, I enjoyed my short stay here because of the calming effects of sipping on a hot beverage.
google avatar

Zi Y.

Yelp
I came here but left very shortly after, mainly because of one reason. This store didn't have WIFI! Because there's NO WIFI, if you need to study or write something without distraction this would be the place to go to. Other than that, I really loved the location, its very peaceful here. The design is very minimal and spacious. There's lots of seating but NOT AS MANY OUTLETS. Not very convenient for laptop users. They have a really nice big room for private booking/coffee tasting. But their coffee tasted okay and do not have vanilla syrup or organic milk.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop in Mount Pleasant with simple, minimalistic decor. Located in the heart of Mount Pleasant, there is plenty of street parking available on the side streets close by this spot. This is a great spot if you're looking to grab a coffee and sit and chat with a friend or get a coffee to go. It is not a great spot if you were looking to get some work done, because they don't have wifi. As for their coffees, yummy, delicious, gives me the right energy kick. They don't have any flavouring - so my go to here is just a regular almond milk latte sans vanilla. They also have some treats for sale like muffins, brownies, cookies, etc. All in all, this spot was perfect for what I needed - mid day pick me up to go.
google avatar

Craig C.

Yelp
It is what it is. Coffee, and baked goods where good. Super sunny spot it was relaxing and nice. Price is what I expected based on what we walked into. I'd go back for sure.
google avatar

Imma M.

Yelp
Yes, it's true - this place has no WiFi and limited outlets. Even still, I come here to study because the coffee is good and the ambience is just right. I think they're trying to encourage a space where people make eye contact and talk to each other stuff, but they haven't dissuaded me from hauling my laptop down here. I haven't tried the food here. The pastry doesn't look as exceptional as Atelier down the street, but the minimalist decor and electronic music is just right, so they haven't completely foiled me from being productive and getting some writing done here with a wireless hotspot. The floor to ceiling windows, wood fixtures, and warm lighting make this a cozy spot to escape the rain.

Yelp
I really enjoyed their nitro cold brew coffee on tap. It had a nice foam on top and went down cold and creamy. Paired with a cranberry amaretti, it was very tasty. Since they have large windows and plenty of seating, the vibe was leisurely.
google avatar

Genevieve M.

Yelp
Great selection of beverages and nice hot food items. Much, much higher quality than a starbucks, but prices are similar. Definitely recommend supporting a small business that bakes everything in-house rather than a "cafe" chain like starbucks
google avatar

CH L.

Yelp
I have always wanted to come to this place and today I decided was the day! As usual, the parking around here is hard to find but there are lots of free ones so just be patient. I ordered their nitro tap cold brew coffee, and to be honest, it tasted different than other cold brews I have had. It is not as strong as I liked from a cold brew and also not as rich as I liked. However!! This cold brew is the creamiest one I have ever had, so creamy I thought it was cream on top, but really it was the micro foam that was formed from dispensing from the tap, nitro tap. This is a very interesting and an awesome characterstic with this brew method. The interior was simple and uncluttered, I love the window seats, people watching and coffee = the most awesome useless pastime :) The general crowd is pretty typical but a great mix for this area in my opinion. They talk about politics, art, and social media, all with super high passion :D The Scottish shortbread I also ordered was very very tasty!
google avatar

Tara N.

Yelp
Great coffee and super cool decor... A little stand offish vibe however it's perfect if you just wanna sit and read all by yourself. The staff is friendly... Unfortunately no organic milk :-(

Yelp
* Third time is the charm * My favourite spot for espresso in Vancouver, the Elysian Room (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/the-elysian-room-vancouver-2?hrid=BiqAg9gpHCkpvlIdU0yAjA) has opened up a third location as of this week. I have to admit the 2nd location which opened on Broadway never really nailed it for me, as the original location was more consistent in its espresso pulls for me. So I was curious how this new third location would do. Based upon the espresso today it is up to the standards of the original location - hooray! Now I don't know if that is because they just opened and they are focusing on quality/consistency carefully or if it will be a regular thing at this location. I sure hope it is a regular thing - it would be nice to have a 2nd consistent espresso location from them! Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz_photos/elysian-coffee-3-vancouver?select=1xQ8qVeAdqxNLAyKtGwjLw#1xQ8qVeAdqxNLAyKtGwjLw This new space has an on-site roastery and an onsite bakery. I guess they will be supplying their other two locations from here? It is a very large space compared to their other locations, and currently just has a few seats around the windows. I imagine more seating will be coming soon. I'm happy with what they've done here so far, and hope it continues!
google avatar

Yutaka T.

Yelp
This is third location. Space: A very open and clean space. Seating is limited to counter seats next to the windows. Wifi is not provided. They also house a roasting and tasting room. Coffee: Just like the original location, the coffee doesn't disappoint. Excellent drinks using single origin beans. Food: They offer some like snacks - cookies, scones, croissants, grilled cheese sandwiches, etc. Location/Parking: It's right at the corner of 7th and Ontario Street. 1-hour on-street parking is provided right next to the store.

Yelp
We've enjoyed everything about this place until a few things went wrong. I phoned in to explain what happened with the trust that what happened would be made right. That was not the case. The "general manager" who took the call started tossing judgments at me and insulting me, and not answering a questions with an answer, it really could have been an simple exchange if she had of had the maturity and customer service attitude do acttually do that. I was being professional, relating what occurred in a decent, brief way, but unfortunately this female staff person named Rochelle misinterpreted my exprience in doing business for decades, I have observed the it's only the lack of emotional maturity and lack of a positive service attitude of an individual who is supoposed to represent a business that contributes to a company losing business because of their ignorant and rude response to customers reaching out for a resolution or anything else to do with the business. We have decided not to find a phone number that would connect us to this business owner, because of the fact he or she did hire this kind of a person, and therefore would approve of whatever she did. We are a busy family and don't have the time for any more pointless negativity from a coffee shop. In closing, just know she has lost some business for you, and not just us, but be assured also from our friends and colleagues. If you've ever read any business journals, you know that most business is word of mouth. And that once a customer is lost, not just one patron is lost - the statistics say between 65 and over 200 would-be customers are lost. For that loss created today, you can thank your so-called "general manager', and I say "so=called" becuase we were honestly stunned by her response that could only be expected to be given by a self-centered, arrogant school-child.

Yelp
Such a cute location tucked away from the busy streets. The interior is very minimalist and modern with a focus on birch wood decor. The staff is wonderful and very friendly, offering me water on top of my coffee during my stay :) I love the feel of this place, very relaxed and the music is on point! The only down side is that they don't have free wifi or else I would have given them 5 stars. I had the cold brew coffee and it tasted delicious! The subtle floral notes with no soury after taste is fabulous! I will come back here if I'm around the area again :)
google avatar

Hayley M.

Yelp
American was made with great quality espresso! Sparkling water was nice. I love the big windows and seating along the windows. Food options are ok
google avatar

Rick C.

Yelp
Elysian's newly opened third location is already quietly buzzing in its new Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. I enjoy simple pleasures like Elysian's hot chocolate cookie and a cup of Americano. The sweet and salty treat compliments the robust yet lightly smooth espresso beverage just so as it lifts my afternoon mood. Elysian takes over the one-story corner shop from CocoaNymph and brings the same sleek, clean, and timber look of its other locations with a more open feel to it. It's an off the track location surrounded by light industrial and commercial outlets yet still quite central, being around the corner from 33 Acres on one side and Hootsuite HQ on the other on 8th Avenue. It's just slightly away from the hub of cafes and shops a few blocks down on Main Street. More spacious and roomy, the new Elysian also has a more stark, minimalist feel but brings the same basic, serious aesthetic. Coffee aside, it's also hard to beat the ceiling to floor windows bringing in so much natural light while gazing into the streets on the corner of 7th Avenue and Ontario Street.

Yelp
One of the reasons we come here is because of the great coffee. It really is excellent. The ambience is good too. But they recently changed their cheddar scone recipe, which has me really sad. It was the best in the city. Like, it was my kryptonite. Now they make it with olives, feta and mint?? Really? Way too salty. I'm not sure I will come back for a while but I will pop in from time to time to see if they bring back the best cheddar scone in Vancouver.
google avatar

Ana C.

Yelp
I left shortly after my visit, sice I was planning to work there with my laptop but they don't have wifi plus they only have one outlet available. Definitely not an ideal coffee shop for freelancer to work at. Cold brew was decent though.
google avatar

Karen C.

Yelp
Rode in from Port Moody for this little gem. Delicious coffee and the paninis look great too.
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
I really want to like this place.. It was very minimalistic. They don't even have free Wifi which is one star less for me. The people behind the counter were super helpful and friendly and even offer me a glass of water as I was trying to decide on their coffee. I ordered the Americano with 20% water, the cashier put some hot water in a cup and asked if that's what I wanted, once I agree, she put the cup with the hot water to the back counter. By the time the barista got my Americano made, I was surprised she put the coffee in the now cool water in the cup. When I got the drink, it was cool. The taste of the coffee is Acidic but its probably more the type of coffee they are serving which is not 'my cup of tea'. I was disappointed with the way my Americano is served. I guess I was spoiled by other baristas first warming my cup with hot water , then add the coffee shot, then add the bit of hot water I wanted. For the price they charge, I don't think I will be back again.

Kameshwari K.

Yelp
No WiFi available. It does doesn't matter because I love excellent customer service and great coffee. This place taught me to not accept burnt coffee beans. I also appreciate that I can get an almond milk latte that is more creamy and more tasty than a dairy latte. My favorite location is Burrard, across from the hospital near the Wall Center.
google avatar

Hanson D.

Yelp
Nosh and Nibble came here for an afternoon pick-me-up and I had the following: Burundi Dark Roast ($3) Little Oat (~$3) I'm a fan of single-origin coffee like the Burundi because it means the coffee you're tasting is pure and isn't mixed with lesser beans. I also like to drink my coffee black - both for the pain of burnt beans at Tim's and to really taste the coffee for what it is. This was one of the sweeter coffees I've had so you might not need to add much sugar. It also tasted very fresh (they have their own roastery here) with a good aftertaste. No hints of water mixed in either, so it was quite full-bodied. It's weird to be able to just trust coffee like this, but this was a really good cup of $3 coffee (higher than the average), and better than the one I had at JJBean. Prado Cafe might be a closer comparable. The Little Oat was a cookie-shaped oat bar. This was super filling and had some juicy raisins baked in. Again, the price is a bit higher than normal but you get a quality oat bar made on-site. If you're looking for good coffee with a slight feel of elitism, this roastery is a good way to start.
google avatar

Steven D.

Yelp
Spacious and modern space with limited seating and with a very minimalistic approach to decor. A bit "cold" for my taste but that's just a preference. Most importantly, the coffee - it lives up to the fame and the great reviews from their other locations. I ordered an espresso macchiato, my go-to drink. It was VERY good. Perfect esspreso shot, great crema, perfect milk texture and some little art on top. The taste was awesome - full body, round, not bitter or sour at all. I'm a fan and I'll be coming back for more.
google avatar

Joseph H.

Yelp
My coffee was amazing. Creamy, smooth, balanced. The kind of coffee that makes your day instantly better. Paired with the complimentary sparkling water, it was perfect. Their roastery is here and a tasting room. I thought the interior design was minimalist and lovely. I like the out of the way location. The world is not beating a path to this door, and sets off a nice contrast to their Broadway location with the constant traffic.
google avatar

Jennie M.

Yelp
Alright, this hidden-on-a-hill coffee shop is not bad - but I wouldn't rank it as a "caffeine fix destination" either. I previously had been to this building when it was the fabulous Coco Nymph, and was surprised to see a cafe here now. My espresso macchiato was good, but not outstanding. The room itself is stark and a little uninviting - not the kind of place you take your laptop and work for an hour or 2. Also, with no air-conditioning it is rather hot and stuffy on a hot day. The one really great thing that I did love, and would completely recommend, is their grilled cheese sandwich with house made ketchup! Yum!!
google avatar

Holly G.

Yelp
I love the coffee, but usually just come for their coffee beans & make coffee at home. Did you know you get a complimentary drip coffee with the purchase of a bag of beans? They don't always offer you one, and sometimes I'm too shy to ask.
google avatar

Maddie M.

Yelp
Didn't enjoy our coffees. My boyfriend and I both got cappuccinos. There was 0 frothy foam and the milk tasted off.
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
Ordered decaf.. didn't get decaf. Girl at the counter offered me sparkling water, I declined, and she angrily mumbled that it's all part of the service and the proper way to drink coffee. I will decide how I drink my coffee thanks. Interior looks pretty but it's like it's been designed to be anti social and uncomfortable so you don't stay more than 10 mins. If you're looking for somewhere to read, meet friends or do some work, there are plent of nicer, more friendly coffee shops in the area, with better coffee and food eg. Aperture, Kafka's, JJ Bean, Kranky's.
google avatar

Meagan L.

Yelp
I really like the vibe of this location. Bright, airy with lots of windows. It's an excellent to dwell on your thoughts and do some serious writing or do some people watching. It's close to my office so it's a nice place to escape when you need a change of scenery. I love that they sell the unbranded glass Keep Cups with the cork band. It's my favourite resusable cup (both model and brand). They also have a great selection of serious coffee products (scales, kettles, makers, and mugs). As for coffee, the in house blends are a beautiful range on the coffee spectrum - bold, acidic, sweet and smooth. And, a good slection of single origins. Delicious and beautifully crafted lattes, and a delightful London fog. I also love the array of baked goods. Whether you're on the go or taking a break definitely stop by the next time your on 7th and Ontario.
google avatar

Matthew M.

Yelp
Top-notch Cafe, awesome clean ambiance and decor, minus Wifi. Great place to discover high levels of coffee culture, not the place to get a lot of work done if you require Internet.
google avatar

Jack J.

Yelp
Stopped in the new location today for the second time. Felt compelled to write a post as I was able to secure a new hario 02 range server for my home pour over, something that all the other top shops didn't carry. If you need an alternative to Archive for coffee gear then you should check out the small but good selection these guys have. Additionally I have to say how far Elaysian roasting has come in such a short time. Had an Americano today that was really smooth and non-acidic. Top notch. Keep up the good work guys.
google avatar

Sarah F.

Yelp
Love this place near my work. Use it for coffee meetings when ever I can. Nice space, people and staff. I love that they have sparking water on tap for free as well. Very classy! Space is a little small but if you find a space, your golden.
google avatar

Lydia M.

Yelp
They are too hip to carry vanilla flavored syrup. Or any flavoring besides sugar and honey. Automatic 1 star from me because I prefer flavoring in my coffee. Please offer more options and you will appeal to a larger audience.

Jacob M.

Yelp
Great coffee and cool environment. No plug ins or wifi so not a great coffee shop to work in for long periods of time.
google avatar

EllenP Z.

Yelp
I go to Elysian very often because of where I work. They have decent coffee, and excellent service, the baristas are all friendly. The space is very welcoming, with big windows, lots of natural light. I've seen many people here complaining about the lack of wifi, which doesn't bother me at all. Wifi is a plus, not a must.
google avatar

Meg S.

Yelp
The minimalist design soothes my aesthetic-loving mind as the coffee does to my caffiene-craving belly. I've never had a bad experience here, with its lovely staff, sweet tunes on the record player and coffee as heavenly as the name suggests.

Kristina A.

Yelp
The baristas are friendly and non pretentious which is a rarity. Great coffee. I had the cappuccino. Avacado toast is lit. No wifi ! (Please change this. You're a coffee shop in 2016). No outlets either! Not a great place to come to work unless you're fully charged. Minimalist design and good indie music playing.
google avatar

Kimberly P.

Yelp
I'm all for a minimalistic approach to décor, but this space is completely uninviting. Perhaps if there was something to see out the window besides a 4-way stop it wouldn't be so bad, but sadly that is all there is. They had run out of almond milk when I was there even though it was still the morning. I accepted this small disappointment and had a soy latte instead. It was good, but not extraordinary which is my new standard in this coffee city. My last gripe is this- the service was painfully slow...my latte took 15 minutes even though there were only a few people in front of me. The barista seemed overwhelmed and frustrated. I'll stick to the Broadway location.
google avatar

Inderpreet S.

Yelp
Welcome to Elysian. Home of the 6 dollar almond latte. 4.50 for a Latte, 1.50 for Almond milk? Paying extra for milk alternatives is absurd on its own but charging 1.50? Also for being a pricy 4.50 latte the coffee was burnt. Maybe it was an early morning mistake, but I am not sure if I will come back to try to again.
google avatar

Alex Z.

Yelp
I was a little apprehensive about this place but it turned into my favourite spot. Coffee and food are always good and the staff are really nice. The vibe is really relaxed and the big windows provide lots of natural light if your there to read.
google avatar

Chelle L.

Yelp
The thing I like the most about this place is the ambiance -- spacious, clean look with huge windows. It felt really good just sit down by the window with a great cup of coffee and just relax. Many other coffee shops are too loud to rest your mind.
google avatar

Cynthia T.

Yelp
With so many coffee shop condensed in such a small radius, I often forget about this location unless I pass by its older counterpart on West Broadway. Coffee is so-so, I'm not a fan of their coffee, lacks flavour compared to other coffee roasters/cafes in the area. Service is great, friendly, no attitude. Ambience out ranks coffee. I'd go back for the working space... But Vancouver is spoiled with great coffee roasters so all in all, it's not bad.
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
Surprised to see this place doesn't get a higher score. I love going here. Cool space and great coffee but also super engaging and interesting staff. Never disappointed!
