"This empanada bakery right on Hoboken’s main drag has the largest selection of Argentine braided-spine empanadas in the metro area, running to two dozen types on some days. They’re served with a spicy and oily orange sauce, and you can’t go wrong getting beef, chorizo, cheese, or any of the other more obvious varieties." - Robert Sietsema

"While most empanadas around here can be identified as Dominican, Spanish, Central American, or Colombian, the version at Empanadas Cafe is staunchly Argentine: Flaky baked crescents with a braided spine and no sign of greasiness. Yet, they are far from austere, with a rich filling that in the signature beef pie runs to ground meat, green olives, eggs, and onions, with a spicy orange dipping sauce served on the side. Many other fillings available, some international in outlook." - Robert Sietsema

Google
Can’t say this is authentic Argentinian empanadas. Most of the empanadas lack flavor and the buttery though. Also advertising caramel as dulce de leche. - Shrimp: lacks flavor and it’s dry - Philly Cheesesteak: lacks flavor and it’s made with ground beef - Banana and dulce de leche: The bananas were not ripe and again this is not dulce de leche but caramel which are not the same - Dulce de leche flan: overly sweet and dense and again didn’t taste like dulce de leche at all but caramel. - Arepa with Cheese: it was delicious! All in all it’s a quick snack but for someone who comes in expecting Argentinian empanadas will be disappointed.

We came to hoboken to ride a bicycle and we saw this place, we decided to try, let me tell you,the empanadas are delicious, we try 3 different types but they have a variety of flavors, coffee is sooo good, we will definitely come back for more, I took some empanadas home for my son to try too. I RECOMMEND this place 100%. I'm from Argentina so I know a good empanada when I try it.

Google
Solid spot for empanadas—flavor’s definitely there, though I do wish they cooked them a bit more. That said, every culture has its own style, so I get it. Would be great if the indoor dining area were a bit larger too

These were the best food I’ve ever had in my week so far ! The girls were really funny and made me laugh — I’ll definitely be coming back!

First time here and went with ham & cheese. Could not believe how good it was. Made a second trip and stocked up on three ham & cheese plus three chicken. Can’t wait to have one or two but have for later. You will be seeing me return as a lifelong customer. My friend Andrea from Queens has been told and cannot wait to pop a visit being that she is Argentinian plus has a love for empanadas. She does not know what she’s in for.

Google
A lovely bakery serving delicious pastries and Argentinian empanadas. Ambience/Location: 5/5 Located on Washington street, the place is very functional on the inside, showcasing their pastries amd empanadas. No seating in the inside, but a tables outside to enjoy your purchase. Service: 5/5 Very friendly and fast. Food: 5/5 They have a large variety of baked goods and desserts, with a nod to the Argentinian way of making them (for example, there croissants are more like a sweet bread). They have a large selection of different empanadas to satisfy every taste. Their pan de bono was delicious! Amd gluten free! Price: 5/5 Very reasonably priced for the quality

Google
Empanadas cafe is my husband and I’s favorite spot to pick up a quick meal or snack! We love that there are so many different options, that the empanadas are baked not fried, how friendly the staff are, and how quickly we can get a delicious meal! This is definitely not a sit down place, but it is always clean and has a few seats along the window to eat quickly and some tables outside when it is nice. We have also found that they are a huge hit at parties - get a big box with a bunch of flavors and everyone will find something they love! Our favorites are the spicy chicken, spinach, guava and cheese, and Cuban but you really can’t go wrong with any of them!

Yelp
I used to love Empanadas Cafe however the quality has seriously gone down. I went a few weeks ago - the empanadas are different- i dont think they are fresh baked anymore.. they didnt have chimichurri sauce to accompany the empanadas but offered me to buy an $8 bottle of sauce... lastly maybe it was the day i was there but they werent taking cash.... Anyway, i hope they step their game back up to how it was before they moved locations

John P.

Yelp
The staff is very friendly and the empanadas are typically good. It's nice to have a nice, local spot that makes tasty, grab and go food. They have a variety of flavors to choose from. They also have some great looking desserts I have yet to try. The one thing I would not recommend is the beef patty - I switched it up and decided to try this and it was dry and mostly dough and no meat. Every empanada I have tried though has been delicious. Will stop by again soon!

Yelp
If you're looking for a late night snack in Hoboken, this empanada place is perfect spot. It's a cute little spot next to lots of bars, so you'll definitely see it if you're out. Service was very friendly and recommended me the popular empanadas. I got the beef and cheese empanada which was baked. It was delicious, and I would love to go back and try the different flavors, as they have burrito and Buenos Aires next time. My friend got the sausage and the chimichurri sauce, which are supposedly to be spicy but it was not. Because it's Hoboken, the empanadas are $4 which I think it's a little much but I understand because of the location.

Yelp
It was a hot day and we wanted iced coffee. What a pleasant surprise to look across the street and find Empanadas Cafe. Argentine empanadas are my favorite and the make a delicious iced coffee that hit the spot on a 93F degree day. We shared a ham $ cheese and a chicken empanada. Both were excellent. I can't wait to return.

Louis A.

Yelp
Purchased some empanadas on Saturday for the team. They were all pretty good. Service was very nice. This is not my first visit but my first recommendation. Never have an issue at the Cafe.

Ami J.

Yelp
Tried their empanadas after passing by the place many times. Just Awful! The only thing worse than the taste of those so called empanadas was the service. Never coming back .

Virgi L.

Yelp
Tasty beef empanadas! A bit expensive almost $5 for one. Good for takeout. Chicken empanadas are not as good. They could fix the outside to be more inviting for seating. Trash outside looks disgusting. .

Veronica H.

Yelp
Very GREAT ... so good had to come back for more the same day !!! Great selection to choose from ~ from sweet to meaty to spicy ... your taste buds will definitely be happy .....

John Z.

Yelp
Awful empanadas. Empanadas were cold and tasteless. I can't fathom how anyone has positive remarks about this place

Jerry D.

Yelp
Staff was real friendly. I got the Cuban and it really tasted like the sandwich. These empanadas are all baked. So didn't feel guilty eating it!! Lots of flavors to select from, a little something for everyone

Danielle G.

Yelp
I've walked past this empanadas cafe a thousand times, today I decided to try them out. As I always buy my empanadas from O'lala Empanadas in Jersey City, so I'll have to make the comparison between. Well this Hoboken spot offers many more varieties and also a few pastries and fresh juice. I got the spinach and veggie empanadas and unfortunately they weren't that great. They have a light dough and lots of filling, but the flavor is missing. They look pretty and taste decent but definitely not the best. I'll stick to my JC empanadas.

Neha B.

Yelp
Hoboken's Washington Street has an endless number of options when it comes to dining. If you're in the mood for a small bite look no further than the @empanadascafehb. With a multitude of empanadas to choose from it is a fun place to explore with your tastebuds. Empanadas are not the only offering as there are also a variety of pastries and arepas to choose from as well not to mention that there is a listing of sandwiches too. With multiple options this makes empanadas cafe an affordable fun place to bring friends. Alongside the empanadas we also sampled the cookies which were super delicious with some piping hot lattes. If you are a late night coffee drinker, head over to Empanadas cafe to get your fix.

Joanne T.

Yelp
This is my favorite empanada spot! So many flavors, great sauces and easy to pick menu. Every time I am in the area - this is the place I stop into. They are also open late on weekends. Highly recommend this place!

Sabria C.

Yelp
The combinations sound weird it's not like the traditional empanadas, it's more like a air fried version. I wasted my time and money . The lady who serviced me was polite but this isn't something I would try again . It's like a thin piece of bread with whatever filling and air friend with a red label stamp on it . 0/10 . Definitely not worth my $5

O C.

Yelp
The quality of their empanada have changed. They used be delicious but now it was spicy. Maybe, they have another cook. Plus, I ordered deluce de Leche croissants abd they were hard! What a disappointment!!!

Prianka S.

Yelp
Really extensive selection of empanadas but they are decently priced and filling. I got the spicy chorizo empanada and it was delicious. They give sauces on the side too which added to the flavor. I felt the spicy chorizo needed a kick and I'm glad they gave a spicy sauce. Service was nice too. Would happily come back and try more empanadas.

Mark S.

Yelp
Small little hole in a wall place... With only three tables inside plus a few barstools along the wall. This time of year they even have a few tables outside. Many options for those vegans as well. They have over 20 empanadas currently on the menu, which is a blackboard as you enter on the left. These items are baked in an oven and not fried as most places tend to do. A few of their popular items are gone by mid afternoon. Ended up ordering 3 to my liking. They were... - A mild Chorizo - Cheese( Mozzarella) great cheese pull - Buenos Aires No favorites, they were all very good. The young lady behind the counter suggested I try that Chimichurri sauce with my meat empanadas. This was a great recommendation. So glad that I found this place. Look those prices are dirt cheap. There is not many places in Hoboken where you can have lunch and it costs less than $13 with a drink.

Giseli C.

Yelp
They empanadas are really really good and they also have a ham and cheese pie that is to die for .. I just find that service in this place is not friendly enough for my taste . But the empanadas were exceptional!!

Lorin A.

Yelp
Disappointed. Got 3 empanadas, the shrimp one was very dry, the chicken one has literally nothing in it, and I was supposed to get a beef and cheese but I was given a spicy chicken that I unfortunately can't eat. Won't be coming back here

Ace G.

Yelp
empanadas are good, im vegan so i only had the rice & beans and the veggie but they were really good

Shishene J.

Yelp
The beef empanada and the guava and cheese empanada were both mediocre at best to bad. This is one of the worst empanadas place I've been to.

Seema P.

Yelp
Best empanadas with a great selection of savory and sweet flavors! The mushroom, guava, and burrito were my favorites. Really small sitting area so expect to be on the go with your empanada. Highly recommend getting at least 2-3! Can't go wrong

Hillary B.

Yelp
I was really excited walking into this shop and seeing all the different empanadas. It's cool to see that they somehow write the type of empanada on each one which is very helpful if you order a bunch. I ordered a Cuban empanada and was slightly let down because it was dry. Thinking now that maybe I should have taken them up on hot sauce.

Lucius G.

Yelp
I love they're customer service as well as theyre empanadas and pastries, I tried out the philly cheesesteak the pulled pork and the guava and cheese and they were all good

Tony J.

Yelp
I had a spicy chorizo and a Buenos Aires. The outside was nice and crisp and the filling was very good. Note that they are baked rather than fried, so it will be healthier though the texture of the crust isn't quite the same.

Philip C.

Yelp
We've been to this place many times in the 4 years we've lived in Hoboken. The empanadas are great. But lately they've become super stingy with the sauce (as in they won't even give it to you unless you ask and they treat you like shit as if we're stealing from them). I ordered 15 empanadas once and they gave me 3 tiny sauces and said no when I asked for more. The workers are so rude and it's not worth dealing with them. I won't be going back.

Kathie G.

Yelp
I stopped by to order some food to go on a Monday evening and only waited 5 or so minutes to get my food. I got a chicken empanada and a chorizo empanada, and the total came out to $7-$8. They heat up the empanadas for you, which is nice. The chicken empanada was a bit dry, but otherwise the flavors were great.

Ana D.

Yelp
Buenisimas empanadas no soy fan de las aceitunas ni tanta cebolla asi que las de beef cheese , ham cheese y chicken son muy ricas y recomendables!! Excelentes

Selena Y.

Yelp
Not bad but not amazing empanadas either. I was attracted by the "buy 2 empanadas get 1 coffee free special" going on, which seemed like a decent deal for a ~$7 snack. Unfortunately the empanadas fell short for me, mostly due to their temperatures. I tried 4 of the empanadas (Buenos Aires, Hoboken, Spicy Chicken, and Spicy Beef), and all of them were just briefly warmed. In fact, the center of my Spicy Chicken empanada was still a little cold! I know that some of these empanadas can be made hours before serving, but I'd expect the restaurant to at least heat them back up enough so that they'd taste as "fresh out of the oven" as possible. Despite the temperature, the flavors were there and I was impressed with the variety of empanadas to choose from. Out of my four I liked the Spicy Beef filling the best, but as a warning, it was VERY spicy and had more chili peppers in it than expected. If you enjoy spicy though, the Spicy Beef with some added house hot sauce is for you.

Karlos A.

Yelp
This place was absolutely delicious. The empanadas you are so fresh come with us neighbors are so amazing, and the girl working there was absolutely fantastic. She gave us a great recommendations and we almost ordered the whole menu. Definitely a great place to have some breakfast relax before starting your day at work. Can't wait to come back

Stephy G.

Yelp
Empanadas Cafe is my favorite empanada spot. They're a little cramped for space, but they do offer a bit of indoor and outdoor seating depending on the season. I've tried a few of their flavors, but my all time favorite has to be the Burrito Empanada made up of chicken, rice, beans, and cream cheese - each table has chimichurri sauce on it which I always end up using (it's oily and delicious).

Rachelle K.

Yelp
WOW!! I stopped by for my lunch break on my way to honey grow and I'm so glad I came here instead. Ordered 2 empanadas (originally) - the Philly cheesesteak and Buenos Aires empanadas, then had to grab another. So glad I stayed to eat instead of leaving or I wouldn't have been able to grab a third. For the third, I got the spicy chicken. My order of preference after trying them all is: 1. Philly cheese steak 2. Spicy chicken 3. Buenos Aires These empanadas are Argentinian style, so I believe the crust is flour and it's thin and they are baked not fried. There is just enough crust that it doesn't overwhelm the empanada which means.... much more room for filling. And fortunately, they have over 24 types of empanadas here so you're bound to find one you like. Once you order they toast the empanadas and within ~2 minutes come out perfectly toasted with the empanada types imprinted on the crust-- a great feature so you don't have to ask which is which. Almost forgot about the hot sauce!!! So good. Highly recommend if you like heat. It has just enough heat to compliment the flavor of the sauce without overwhelming it. Will 100% return. Quick service, large variety of options, quality food, good sauce and decent prices... wins all around. Heads up you only get 1 of each sauce per 2 empanadas for 2go. If you're anything like me one sauce lasts half an empanada. Either stay and eat to use the bottles or I'd recommend buying more.

Kelly V.

Yelp
Stopped for the first time on my way home from the city. I was surprised to see how big the selection was! They do a great job of labeling beach empanada... the filling it actually printed on the outside dough. The selection is one of the best I've seen in Hoboken. Anything from chorizo to cheese and spinach and everything in between. I went with the chorizo and a spicy chicken. The empanadas are the perfect size for the price. If you're not sure what to start with the staff is super helpful with recommendations. The top five sellers are listed behind the checkout counter. The space is small inside so not ideal during COVID, but they do an excellent job of serving you quickly so you can be in and out.

Eddy V.

Yelp
I'm usually not the one to write bad reviews. But this is definitely overdue. I've been to this place about 5 times and honestly this place is not welcoming at all and a bit racist. Just by the demeanor and how we were treated both black and Hispanic. I'm big on good service and positive vibes. They treat there white customers with more respect. Denied oat milk and almond milk and offered it to his white customers. Recognize your ignorance. We all are human just different races and cultures . Last time obviously coming to this place

Wei S.

Yelp
I have been craving for empanadas for weeks after saw this place on Yelp. Finally, I decided to give it a try for lunch. My husband and I shared 5 empanadas: spicy chorizo, spicy chicken, ham and cheese, pepperoni, and beef and cheese. They came with the hot sauce and chimichurri sauce. I would say the empanadas were very good. Spicy chorizo and pepperoni tasted like pizza. Ham and cheese was very cheesy. YUM! Beef and cheese tasted like a beef patty. The spicy chicken didn't WOW me as much the other ones but still pretty good. Hot sauce was very good, which tasted like Frank hot sauce with habanero peppers. Chimichurri sauce was good too, especially with the beef and cheese. This place was very small. You needed to order at the cashier first. I totally didn't expect the food will be bought out, which was a plus. I will definitely go back and try the sweet empanadas and their cakes.

Philip R.

Yelp
For the homesick Brit in Hoboken there are plenty of bars that serve meals and beers or meals that are beers etc. "But what about a decent pie in the shape of a Cornish pasty or an apple turnover?" I don't hear any Brits say because this is Yelp in written form, and I'm not entirely sure how to end this sentence. Empanadas are Spanish or Latin American pastry turnovers filled with a variety of savory ingredients that are then fried and baked. These are baked, and delicious. Much like a Cornish pas... we've been through that bit already. Right. So. If you fancy a nice bit of pastry with some sumptuous fillings, try Empanada Cafe. Oh, and they're $3 and change each. Bargain.

Jon B.

Yelp
This place is a must visit: every flavor of empanada you could ask for ( guava and cheese is my go to). Whether a it's Cuban, Philly cheesesteak, or one of the MANY others, this joint is quite unique and has excellent coffee as well !

Jenny K. L.

Yelp
It's no Julia's empanadas in Washington D.C. but they're baked no fried and have quality goods inside. The chicken was dark meat and a bit plain- the chimichurri sauce and hot sauce gave it a nice zing. The chorizo/sausage was also good. Neither offered a wealth of flavor. Tip: when packing it to go, watch the chimichurri sauce which tends to leak its oil.

Ivonne O.

Yelp
I went last Friday to try the empanadas and pandebonos. The empanadas was ok but the pandebono was not good at all, it didn't have a flavor as a real pandebono. Worst thing- even I just got a lot of things for takeout and they didn't provide me a good service, they put themselves the tip. I asked for receipt and the person didn't want to give it to me. It's not honest when a employee put the tip. The customer has to.

Sally R.

Yelp
Small cozy place in the heart of Hoboken. They make delicious baked empanadas in a variety of flavors from savory to sweet. We tried a few: spicy chicken, spicy chorizo, cuban, crab, spinach, buenos aires, rice and beans, guava, and dulce de leche with bananas. I have a few favorites but overall they were all good. Presentation was very nice and they stamp the empanadas with the name of flavor so you don't have to guess which type you are going to eat. There is nothing worse than ordering a few different kinds of empanadas and then not being able to know which one is what. All the empanadas were served warm. We were able to meet the owner, who is originally from Argentina. He gave us some samples of the sauces they also sale at this establishment: chimmichurri and spicy sauce. Both were delicious so we decided to get a couple of jars to go. Great place for a quick delicious bite on the way to a bar or to explore the area.

Evan M.

Yelp
Impressive new cafe in Hoboken. The empanadas are Argentine style, pre-baked, then heated in a small oven when you order. There is a great selection, enough to satisfy a meat, cheese, or veggie craving. The prices are fair, averaging about $3 each, but you could wolf down quite a few if you're super hungry. You order at the counter (very nice people, by the way, props), and a few minutes later the empanadas are brought to your table, steamy hot, served on a wooden cutting board with zesty homemade chimichurri sauce and a tangy hot sauce. The cafe itself is petite, maybe seating about 10-12 inside, perhaps more outside with weather permitting. Definitely recommended for a light lunch, light dinner, or a late night treat.

Dewan A.

Yelp
Probably the best late night food in Hoboken. I got the beef empanada, chicken empanada, and chorizo empanada. All were excellent. I also recommend asking for their hot sauce and green sauce.

Gabriel N.

Yelp
When you're meeting friends for lunch in Hoboken there are a ridiculous number of options, but when you're in the mood for a little taste of home nothing beats a delicious empanada. The Empanadas Cafe is a cozy little place that's great for a quick bite while catching up with someone. The menu is upfront and easy to decipher. They've answered just about all the questions you might have, so that the ordering process is fast. If you're really struggling then there's a leader board showing the most popular flavors. Let the wisdom of the crowds guide you. Ordering was smooth and the empanadas were popped into the oven to get their insides all gooey and delicious. My stomach was growling with anticipation as I watched them heat up. Honestly, I might have been staring. We grabbed the small table by the window and they brought out our assortment on a giant cutting board. The presentation was very nice as you may have noticed in my photo. Thankfully, each one was clearly labeled so no one stole anyone else's favorite. I went classic and snagged a spicy chorizo. The spice was assertive (which I loved), but the chorizo was not overly greasy (which I also loved). The lunch was light on the stomach, as long as you don't over do it, and also light on the wallet. 3 bucks a pop shouldn't break the bank. The service was fantastic throughout the entire meal and you can tell they care. With such an extensive menu I'm looking forward to coming back and trying out the rest of their tasty morsels.

Nicholas G.

Yelp
We ordered the jamaican patty, beef and cheese, buenos aires, spicy chorizo, and burrito. My personal fav was the spicy chorizo. All of them tasted fresh and perfectly cooked. The great thing about these empanadas is they all have unique flavors and dont all taste the same. Sometimes when a place has a specialty everything kinda tastes the same but not here. Each empanada has great flavor and has great balance. The hot sauce that comes with the empanada's is very good. The chimichurri wasnt my favorite so stick with the hot sauce. The dough is both soft and holds the empanada together well. This is great hangover food or if you want a different take on lunch. Delivery was quick and prices were good. I will be ordering again.

Jane L.

Yelp
Came here once after reading raving reviews from fellow Yelpers about Empanadas Cafe. Walked in when they weren't busy around mid-afternoon so I was able to take my time with ordering. Their selection of empanadas is expansive but too small and not filled enough to be worth the price ($3-4 each). I had 3 empanadas and was still hungry and could've eaten another. Will return again to give them another shot if the empanadas are filled better and more affordable

Tiffany K.

Yelp
Every time I am in Hoboken, I stop here for empanadas for myself and my husband. Our favorites are the spicy chicken, spinach, and mushroom. We Can't wait to work our way through their entire menu.

Melinda T.

Yelp
My friend and I were walking around look for food late at night, and she mentioned that this place just opened up - I didn't realize it was so new. Well, first off...there's a great variety of baked empanadas. They have meat ones and veggies ones, and let's just say...we had 5 between us to share, and we walked away with 14 to take home (you get 2 free when you buy a dozen). Haha, I guess it's safe to say we liked them and wanted to try more. My friend's favorite was the pork - it's flavorful and a little sweet. My favorite was the caprese one - I thought it was light and refreshing with the tomatoes. We also tried the spicy chicken, ham & cheese, shimp & crap, beef, chorizo, and the hoboken (bacon + egg). All were good! Also, the people working there were super friendly. The owner came out from behind the case to ask for our thoughts and made sure things were ok. It's worth stopping in!! I hope it stays around. Lastly, I think yelp has them closing at 3. That's incorrect. They are open until 10 on most days - I forget if Friday or Saturday have later hours.

Tina W.

Yelp
Location: downtown Hoboken is surprisingly attractive and appears to be a new place for Great food I am very much in a mood of cheap lunch and this new place came to my mind. Lol so I headed there. The place is small, 3 tables. But when j got there, there was no line. I quickly decided to ft their spinach empanadas and ham and cheese empanadas. Food: they did heat up but it was still cold inside. So it loses half of the joy empanadas but the food is filling and good tho I recommend u to try but am them to heat up a little bit longer Price/ cheap 3.5 May need to come back to have a hot empanadas so I could be less bias.

Geranium Alchemist W.

Yelp
Have tried them a while back when they opened up. They were good at that time. Just tried this week after over several years gap. They were bad - dry and with a rotten sauce. Best empanadas are in NYC in TSQ that are made fresh and they finish rather fast. More option on sauces and service is always decent.
