Watch: How Epiphany Farms Is Changing American Dining | Eater

"Founded in 2009 on a 20-acre plot that includes the childhood home of owner and chef-farmer Ken Myszka, the farm and its companion restaurant (opened in 2013) operate on a dusty, two-lane country road outside Bloomington, Illinois. Situated in a college town best known as the birthplace of Steak ’n Shake, the project initially faced local hesitation and worries that the food would feel pretentious; the owners emphasize that the concept is about everyday nutrition rather than fine dining, a point underscored by chef-farmer Stu Hummel. Over nearly a decade they've focused on educating locals and building credibility—supplying high-profile Chicago clients like the Aviary and Next—as they persist through an uphill battle to change perceptions and promote their farm-to-table approach." - Eater Video

WOW! This has easily become our favorite restaurant on our very first visit here. The food was phenomenal! Very cute atmosphere and vibes are immaculate. The menu is huge as they have multiple kitchens, so there is something for everyone. Staff is so friendly and service is top notch. Your drinks will never run low and they are constantly pre-bussing the tables. Lucy was incredible and she had so many wonderful suggestions. Experience was fantastic, will definitely be making many trips back.

My kids took me here for our Mother's day dinner. Our Waiter was phenomenal. He certainly made a very special evening more special. The food-delicious, the atmosphere- relaxed and inviting. Absolutely will be back.

Had a great dinner at Epiphany Farms for Mothers Day. The Lemon Drop martinis were so good. Ordered a salad that had what we thought was candied pecans, which the wife is allergic but ended up being candied pepitas. Salad was delicious. I had pork chop with candied potatoes and she ordered the NY strip with creamy potatoes. The steak was the best part of the meal. It was a little loud in the restaurant but still an enjoyable evening with super good food... all really farm to table!

You can tell how fresh and healthy these plates are by how COLORFUL they are! Great job epiphany farms making a creative, unique menu. I've never had a bad meal from here. It's a nice spot for a fancier night out. Loved the salmon, the "sexy butter" and the creme brulee! And we've always really enjoyed their brunches when those are an option!

Google

My husband had the pork chop and it was flavorful, tender and amazing as well!!! Our lemon drop martinis were top notch and strong!!! Lupe did a fabulous job as our server!! Would highly recommend!!

Tried this restaurant on our way to St.Louis. The food was awesome. We started off with Honey I’m home and bloody Mary. Drinks were fantastic. We then had hummus, veg fried dumplings, chicken wings and Pork belly bowl. The food was fresh snd delicious. I loved the hummus whereas my husband loved both the wings and the bowl. The service was great. The server was warm and super attentive. We sat outside which was cute. They have plenty of space both inside and outside. The parking was easy as they have a public lot next to the restaurant. I would recommend this place! GIVE IT A TRY!!

This was my Mother's Day dinner with my boys and my first time eating here. We loved it all! Wings, lamb, pizza, steak. All cooked to perfection.

Yelp
A farm to table restaurant using their own vegetable farm and heritage livestock offer a wide range menu from pizza, sushi, Korean barbecue, and American Farm. We chose Beyond Jalapeno Cornbread on creamy farm greens and garlic and topped with whipped goat cheese, candied bacon bites, herbs, and house made hot honey. Our second starter was Cornflake Chicken, which was thin strips of Boneless Chicken thighs coated with crushed cornflakes stacked on Korean barbecue sauce with pickled carrots strips and sesame seeds. Our entrees were Asian Barbecue Pork shoulder, shredded, with Asian slaw, seasonal Farm vegetables, sesame seeds and 5 spice barbecue sauce, and I had the 8 oz. Fillet Mignon cut into 2 medallions with Demi Glacé, seasonal Farm vegetables, and Potato Gratin with Hollandaise. I also had an October Fest beer from Schaefer. They had a good selection of craft beers, wines and full bar. Reservations are needed, a bit pricey but worth it for the quality of food making it a destination restaurant.

Yelp
We've been to Epiphany Farms many times and have always enjoyed it. The food has always been cooked, well, delicious and very well presented. They offer a large variety of options. Service has always been courteous and friendly. I've been there with just my husband as well as several couples, ambiance is warm and comfortable.

Yelp
This place was simply amazing!! I usually don't post reviews but it was so good I had to. The service was as good as the food. Thank you Fizzle and Jonah!!!

Yelp
We've historically had great meals and service at Epiphany Farms. With our latest visit we had great food, however the service was lacking. It appeared our server had a large number of tables and at various parts of the restaurant (both in and outside) making it even difficult to catch his attention to engage with him. While this experience made our meal last longer than usual, we took advantage of enjoying conversation with extended family. Fortunately the food didn't disappoint. We had a variety of things amongst six of us and shared - e.g. pizzas, sushi rolls, Korean chicken wings, etc. The cornbread is a family favorite, and this time we tried the blistered peppers that were a bit addictive without too much heat. While we wouldn't say this was the best dining experience, we know this isn't what we've typically enjoyed and won't view this as a reason not to return.

Yelp
This place is amazing! So many options and everything was great. Great beer selection. The manager personally came to our table to check on us and brought some of our food. The farm to table aspect and variety of options really made this an incredible meal.

Yelp
Food was delicious. The chicken was amazing. Tons of flavor! The service was wonderful. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Yelp
I'm a huge fan of farm to table restaurants and Epiphany takes this to a new level. I say this because of the many styles of food offered. Along with traditional offerings, there are Asian flavors and pizza! Anju Banchan was unlike anything we've ever ordered. I unique mini smorgasbord of tastes! Even the people at the next table wanted to know what it was! The El Diablo pizza was great. The "fresh from the farm" jalapeños really gave it a nice spicy kick! We enjoyed a couple of craft cocktails which were delicious and the wine by the glass selection was nice. I can't conclude this without saying how delightful our server and hostess were. This was our first visit to Bloomington and we will be sure to return.

Yelp
On Sunday September 3rd after driving for hours on our way back to Chicago we decided to stop in Bloomington overnight. I did some Yelp research and we discovered Epiphany Farms. It was about two hours before closing, so we found easy street parking and went inside. We were seated outside, given water, then completely forgotten. There were tables of diners around us that were finishing up, and at least three different servers walked around us to help their tables. Not one acknowledged us and said they would be with us. We waited for twenty minutes. Everyone looked like a deer in headlights - it almost seemed like no one wanted to look our way because they didn't want to commit to having to take another guest. I have no idea. I understand that businesses are short staffed and that everyone is a bit overworked, but it takes two seconds to tell a guest that things are a bit crazy and that you we be with them as soon as possible. We were excited about the variety of dishes on the menu, and I was super excited to se Sippin Pretty on the menu - my most favorite sour beer. Unfortunately we never had a chance to order. We walked away from our table without anyone noticing or caring. Then we checked into a hotel and ended up at Texas Roadhouse, which would not have been by choice, but by this point we didn't have a lot of options. They were actually insane, so we sat at the bar, and the bartender gave us 1st rate service.

Yelp
A amazing food from beginning to end. Our server was knowledgeable of the menu and provided fantastic recommendations

Yelp
Epiphany Farms is a farm to table restaurant in downtown Bloomington. They have two menus offering options! I will definitely be back!

Yelp
We went with a large group (like 16 people) on a Tuesday night and it was very farmhouse chic. The drink and food menu was so diverse, it would be hard to get a good sampling without visiting more than once. I saw mussel and cornflake chicken apps, and I saw steak and scallop entrees... I had the Epiphany Pork Feature, because it's always nice to get a namesake dish. Pork was perfect. The rice had something savory going on in it, but I couldn't place it. My pic of the cornflake chicken is very sad because we were sharing apps. The pork feature is so photogenic, as was much of their offerings! Now, it is a little on the pricey side, but it's such a unique environment, right?

Yelp
We love this place. Fresh farm food and rotating menu. The veggie hummus has always been a hit! It's served with great radishes, broccoli, carrot, parsnip, peppers and lavash. It's a nice start to your meal. They are always very good at accommodating dairy free allergy! Tonight I went with the lamb shank. It had a Mediterranean vibe going on and was so tender. The restaurant is 3 in one. They also have a sushi and pizza menu you can order from but we've always stuck with the farm to table.

Derrick Z.

Yelp
Again we went to Anju but ate in Epiphany can highly recommend this restaurant for all items food service and ambiance

Jack R.

Yelp
Our meal was so overpriced and bland my girlfriend and I still talk about it years later! It's the worst kind of farm to table restaurant that leaves you wondering why you went out at all. The gyoza from the sushi place upstairs was the highlight if that tells you anything.

Yelp
Unexpectedly good food with great service! Nice space, interesting concept of several restaurants in one. Inventive cocktails!

Yelp
Enjoyed a birthday dinner during the weekday. The sour was a delicious beer and my fiancé enjoyed the mock tail with apple cider in it. We munched on the pork dumplings first for an appetizer. For dinner, my fiancé I had the chicken wings, to which they were okay. The fry on them was very interesting. Fiancé's dad loves his skewers and fiancé's mom loved her bulgogi pizza. My stir fry at first was thought to have carrots in it (but I'm allergic to carrots) and then we found out there were no carrots and it was just squash, but our server, Christopher was amazing with his communication. And the manager came out to provide us with the communication as well which was really appreciative. Definitely would go back!

Yelp
Dog-friendly! Farm to table restaurant. We had no reservation but easily got an outdoor table on a Friday night. The service was really good considering how busy they were. We got food from both kitchens. The cornbread from the lower level was absolutely incredible. It came out fast and was like nothing I've ever had. The sushi left a lot to be desired and came out slow but it could just be the Chicago in me used to top knotch fish

Yelp
This is a cute restaurant in a nice brick building with excellent food, cocktails, service, and an okay wine list. Ingredients are high quality, and preparation is expertly done. If I found this quality of food in any city across the country I'd be happy, even the bread was excellent. Definitely the best food I've ever had in the Bloomington-Normal area, bravo!

Mona S.

Yelp
Food-Estate Chicken Ramen. Lacked flavor, they used smoked chicken and pickled onions. Made for an odd combination and would not recommend. Pork dumplings were average. Pricey but the service was very good.
google avatar

Nannette J.

Yelp
Excellent food, amazing cocktails, and superior service. I had their delicious chicken breast. I also sampled a few cocktails and was quite impressed. The house punch is a particular favorite. The service was great. The server was warm and super attentive. We sat outside, which was cute. They have plenty of space both inside and outside. I can't recommend it highly enough!

Yelp
We were in the area on vacation visiting my son. They wanted to try this restaurant which they heard was amazing. Everything was very good. The decor was great. The service was amazing but I gave them four stars because of the prices. We had two appetizers which were bread and sext butter and as well as the pretzel bread, which we totally recommend. The tempura sushi roll was great. And we all each had a pizza, which was ok. I'm sure my son and his girlfriend will be back since they live in the area.

Yelp
This was a delightful stop on our way from St. Louis to Wisconsin and it was exactly what we needed. The wine menu is great- the food menu is clever and the flavors are decadent! Make this a destination for you and anyone you know- local or long distance we will be back! The service was above and beyond- and in pandemic times that is rare. I can't recommend this great spot enough- we will make this a place we visit rather than pass though. So much of the menu left to explore!

Adam P.

Yelp
We just walked out. Got seated outside at 6:10. Not busy, no waits, sat outside, and by 6:30 we finally left. A couple was seated outside *after* us and already had drinks. We sat awkwardly and no one approached us for waters or anything. It was pretty awkward. Maybe next time we'll sit inside? Disappointed because I've never had an experience like that before here. Maybe a fluke but hopefully this review helps the owners to better monitor staff.

Yelp
I reserved their chef's choice, 6 course meal with a wine pairing for a group of 13 people. The dinner and experience was great! The service was excellent and the food was full of surprises and just a lot of fun. They were very accommodating and everyone in my group had a great dinner!

Yelp
I loved how many vegan/vegetarian options there were! The menu is clearly labeled, showing all items that contain any dietary restrictions. I got the vegetable bowl, gimbap roll, and vegetarian steam buns. My boyfriend got the 5 piece Korean bbq chicken wings, spiced edamame, and spicy Korean chicken roll. Everything was so darn good! Extremely flavorful dishes with good sizable portions even tho these were technically tapas sized. I did wish the vegetarian steam buns had vegetables inside of them instead of only mushrooms. Definitely would've elevated the steam buns. I also got the apple brandy cocktail and really loved it! Kind of on the sweet side but tasted great if you don't like tasting alcohol in your drink. The customer service was also fantastic! Our waiter did a great job at helping us go through the menu and answering questions we had. Overall, I had a great experience and would love to come back to try the rest of the menu!

Sarah T.

Yelp
The ambiance was nice for the not-so-big twin cities of Bloomington-Normal. Service seemed good at first, but they happily charged two guests in our group for drinks that were disgusting, without thinking to check why they were barely touched. A few of the dishes were pretty good, but one of the vegan pasta dishes had a watery, overly-salted sauce. You'll probably want to stick to meat dishes and appetizers here and to know what you like regarding drinks since service is lacking. Extra star for the farm-to-table aspect being legitimate. For the price, their service should be way better, and they should NAIL veg dishes, or at least get a decent flavor profile and texture on them before adding them to the menu.

Yelp
Incredible. We were delighted with the food. The scallop potatoes looked like a tuna steak. Everything was delicious. A great place for a special evening out.

Samantha M.

Yelp
We had dinner tonight at Epiphany Farms, and it's clear the quality has gone downhill. We came here to celebrate our 17th wedding anniversary, and I ordered the steak medallions medium. The meal came and my steak was very well done (see pictures). The waitress asked if it was okay and I showed her and she said she could have them recook it. She took the steak back and about 10 minutes later the manager came out with the same steak and said they wouldn't be remaking it, and this was fine as it was. We were absolutely appalled. When you're spending a good amount of money on a meal, you expect it to be prepared well. On top of that, where was my steak for the 10 minutes it was gone?? She set it on the table and told me I needed to eat it as is. Absolutely terrible. We will NEVER be coming back, and will make sure everyone we know knows about the experience we had.
google avatar

Molly T.

Yelp
Went here for a birthday. Food and drinks are very good. It's a little odd how the food doesn't come out all at the same time but still able to look past that.
google avatar

Heidi B.

Yelp
Management says: you WILL eat and pay for gross thing. No food taken off bill. Ordered the dumplings: veggie and pork. They took a while and when they came out the pork were good but the veggie were so waterlogged the fork wouldn't even catch hold. We told the waiter and said no need to make another order, just take off the bill. Waiter (very nice young man) informs us the manager would not allow that, but we could get another order. Fine. This is stupid but ok. Our entree pizza arrives. After we have eaten the entree, the pork dumplings come. Like 40 minutes after the initial dumplings. Then the dessert like after the check. Why the forced dumplings? The bill was $94, it's not like we didn't get other stuff. Where is this mythical manager? I didn't want make a big thing bc it was my friends bday but I wish I had.
google avatar

P B.

Yelp
I would give 3.5 if possible mainly because they are under staffed or poorly staffed. I sat at the bar and waited 5 or more mi it's to be acknowledged- then I had to ask for water. They only had one guy that really knew what he was doing behind the bar. The other guy was polite but learning. Another guest had issues with his order- wrong pizza and it was taking forever. The food was solid. My filet was undercooked- I ordered medium and it was medium rare to rare which I can do but still... regardless the flavor was great. The Potato side was tasty and I swapped mushrooms (I was charged for them but I knew that when I ordered) the Mushrooms were really good. I tried the cornbread- it was good but not sensational. It didn't have any Brussels in it and I didn't notice any bacon just a solid cornbread but again not amazing. I will give the bartender props.... They were willing to make a specific drink I like. I appreciated their willingness to try. I will go back and try a pizza but hope they are better staffed.

Yelp
I'm my opinion it's the best place to get great food and cocktails in town. It's on the more pricey side, but worth it if celebrating or treating yourself to a delicious meal. The service is usual really good and the dining room is cozy. My husband always gets the pork feature, no matter what it is, and it always impresses. Don't skip dessert!
google avatar

Katy M.

Yelp
This place never ceases to amazing me! The food is absolutely excellent and the staff are as warm and pleasant as can be. I have never tasted anything served here that wasn't the best! This restaurant opens your horizons of how food should taste. The chefs tasting menu is a must have for an array of flavors and experience. Best restaurant in Bloomington for sure!
google avatar

Yelp
This was a cool restaurant in downtown Bloomington, IL and we made reservations for 2 for a date night. We were sat right away and our server kindly explained the specials as this was our first time experience. All good is made fresh and the ingredients all come from a local farm. Any food that is not eaten goes into a compost and back to the farm. Very good food and service!
google avatar

Lauren W.

Yelp
Wonderful food and kind service. Be prepared to relax and enjoy your dinner here, as service moves at a more relaxed pace. Highlights were the steaks, potatoes gratin, heirloom salad, sorbet, and creme brûlée!
google avatar

Alicia S.

Yelp
Delicious food. I had the ribeye steak and tomato salad both excellent! Steak was cooked to perfection!
google avatar

Eric D.

Yelp
So I think the pic is enough said. The bartender tried to play it off as no Big deal??? Then the waitress then the manager. So sad because this "was" my favorite restaurant. Now I will never eat there again. Sucks big ole balls
google avatar

Sean P.

Yelp
This was an amazing surprise and one of the best restaurants you'll find anywhere. There is a ton of variety from pizza to sushi to ramen to steaks.. all from a local farm. The standouts were the braised pork shoulder, which was such a stellar combination of flavors unlike anything I've had before. It's hard to stop eating it! On top of the delicious food was possibly the best cocktail I have ever tasted in their Anju Sour. It's a twist on an amaretto sour with some added citrus flavor and a bit of an Asian twist. Out of this world!

lar l.

Yelp
Pricey but we'll worth the visit! Everyone was top notch and the food was outrageously delicious! Definitely going back.

Yelp
I've been a huge fan of their restaurant. It's one place I recommend to people. I'm not sure what has happened the last couple times I've been there. A couple months ago, I visited there to celebrate a promotion. The waitress was scarce. Then she reappears to have a 30 minute conversation with the people she knew seated near us. We had been done and ready pay as it getting close to closing time. Finally got the bill. I used the QR code so we just get out. Then most recently, I visited to celebrate my 5 year wedding anniversary. The visit started strong. Then I received my meal. My wife didn't. That's not unusual here because they usually bring it out as it's finished. I was waiting to eat mine until hers got there. We wait and wait for her pizza. Finally someone (not our waitress) came to tell us they had some issue with their printer but the cooks have began the order. She said should be 5 to 10 minutes. Cool. That time frame had come and past. My glass had been empty for quite a while. No one stopped to check on us. At one point we looked around to flag someone down but we looked around and saw no one at that moment. The table across from us was having a similar issue. When the lady came back my wife told her to just cancel the her order. The employee didn't look pleased.I'm sure thought, "Oh, it's some 'Karen'"rather understanding why we were annoyed. A conservative estimate is it was over 30 minutes between me getting my food and us deciding we were going to leave. Not sure what happened to our original waitress. Saw her reappeared to talk to the table across from us then left. I don't expect to have a fast experience here and that things happen. We were very understanding at first. The lady shows up the second time and no food then it was a breaking point. The food is really good here so it's a shame. We decided we won't be back.

Yelp
Just wanna leave a note for even better service in the future. I have a small concern with the racism in which we were the only Asian dining there. The first time (Wednesday) the service was phenomenal so we decided to come back the next day but everything were below the standard bar that the place set the previous night. Our seat was in the corner and barely got attention, which I understand it might have been a busy night (Thursday). The drinks didn't come out correctly, the food were very carelessly put up and in our signature pork dish there was a fly which they did replace it. Loved this place and came here twice in just one week of visiting the town. Overall service is good and the food were decent if not the best in town. 3 stars cuz it's average of 2 night we visited (5 and 2) sorry for rounding down.

Yelp
Always great service, greeted and seated quickly. They have an awesome bourbon selection not too marked up if you like the fancy stuff. The ability to order from both menus is awesome. The nigiri is delicious, not a huge fan of the rolls as I like more traditional Japanese sushi. The dumplings are delicious. The nested egg is a must! Try it and you will not be disappointed. It's well lit and not too loud and spacious if you have to walk to the bathroom.
google avatar

Sarah K.

Yelp
Everything was absolutely delicious! If I lived closer I would be here all the time! Food is fantastic. Drinks are fantastic. Server was very attentive. Prices are incredibly reasonable- if this spot was in the Chicago area, they would be able to charge so much more! Definitely will be back

Linda T.

Yelp
We ordered the bread. It did not taste fresh. It tasted warmed up in the toaster. The heirloom tomato salad fresh and tasty. It could have had more basil. The steak was cooked correctly but a little too chewy and gristly. Potato Gratin was good. Also liked the cooked carrots. Atmosphere and Service was friendly and fast. I asked for A Side car cocktail with Hennessy and Grand Marnier. It was way too sweet. I told them it needed more lemon and Hennessy--more bitters. Then I told them the recipe. They attempted to correct the terrible cocktail...I didn't want to complain twice. So I added some ice and drank it. ugh. I'm back from out of town. I don't think I will come back

Yelp
I have nothing but good things to say about Epiphany Farms. The food is so tasty and displayed beautifully. The chef came to the table and many staff checked in on us throughout our dinner. The restaurant itself is well maintained and consistently cleaned from tables to floors to bathrooms and the vibe is so cozy. Very outgoing and pleasant people I go at least twice a month and can't help but rave about my positive experience. I recommend the bruschetta or bread and sexy butter for an appetizer. Then the sushi, salmon, or scallops for the entree. The Thai chicken is also excellent! Those are just a few of my faves and the tofu buns and crème brûlée are a delicious experience if you're not too full.
google avatar

Jill D.

Yelp
We have been to Epiphany many times. Always great food! It's a great place to go when you have people in your party with various food restrictions. But this isn't the reason we keep returning. Everything presented is always fresh and beautiful. Outdoor dining is a giant plus for us in the summer. Being in IL we wait all year for pleasant temperatures so it's lovely to have that option. The service at Epiphany is all over the map. Being a former food service employee, I feel they could invest more time into training. Our last meal there should have been a wonderful celebration but instead it was a long and awkward. We had our 4 year old with us and thank goodness he is really well behaved. They forgot our appetizer and his "kid meal" was so late to arrive that I was finished with my meal by the time it landed. They did bring free bread for that mistake but the overall experience wasn't great. I will say that our server was extremely kind, along with the rest of the staff. Again, always wonderful food. We ordered the tofu donuts for dessert. That alone is worth a visit. Our kiddo really enjoyed them as well.

Yelp
I can here with a few co-workers on a Thursday night, we made reservations online. When we showed up there were maybe 5 tables inside and another 6 out side with people sitting in them. That being said the service was slow, took about 20 minutes to get some service. Once we ordered our waiter really never checked back in, until our food came. I am sure the restaurant like everywhere else is understaffed. As for the food, this place is a must try here in the Normal/Bloomington I orders the bread and "sexy butter" not use to be charged for bread and butter, but the butter was different not it was almost like it was cream cheese buttery mix. The pork buns where good, while the pork was! However the presentation was different, overall I would order them again. As for the steak, it was over season to my taste, but over all good flavor. I think next time I will go for the ribeye though. For desert I had the seasonal cheese cake, it was ok. I was kind of disappointed TBH, everything else was so good but desert was a let down. TLDR: reasonable prices, great food with an interesting selection. Would definitely recommend

Yelp
This place is amazing! The egg appetizer was out of this world. Everything on the menu has been delicious!
