The Best East Bay Coffee Shops with Free Wifi

"The only East Bay location of Equator Coffees & Teas is actually a shipping container near Lake Merritt. That said, it does have some nice outdoor seating enlivened with succulents — and wifi. In addition to its usual fleet of coffee and teas, the Oakland Equator also serves canned wine, beer, and ice cream." - Janelle Bitker

Equator Coffees & Teas - Review - Oakland - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"If you need motivation in the form of caffeine before a lap around Lake Merritt, or just want to sip on something while you post up with a book at Snow Park, go to Equator Coffees. The Oakland coffee shop, housed in a red shipping container, has tons of great options, from espresso drinks and chai to blackberry cold brew with whipped cream. The coffee is smooth and strong, and goes well with a breakfast sandwich or pastry." - Julia Chen

Google
Ok so. This location is outdoors only. Went here one day wanting to cozy up and get away from the rain with a cup of joe in my hand. Turns out, my first time here I had no idea this is the worst place to do that. On a nice day the outdoor seating is a VIBE, but unfortunately, if the weather is terrible, I don’t enjoy waiting outside for my coffee while the wind chills my bones. So I give the atmosphere a 3/5 because in the Bay Area the weather can be a bit chilly without notice. Also. I really hope they hear me when I say they need more options than just a 10oz and a 16oz. I am a 12oz girlie till I die!! And I hate that the 10oz is too little liquid for me and the 16oz is too much and tastes watered down. Fun fact, it’s the same albur of espresso shots in both sizes, the 16oz just has more milk, unless you pay extra for another shot. So to me the 16oz is a watered down lightweight latte unless I want to spend $10 on my latte and add more shots etc. The milk here is organic though!!! They use Strauss Organic which is a HUGE plus. I’m always looking for places with organic coffee and organic milk and I really appreciate that about Equator.

Google
Omg this special today the almond latte with coconut gold foam was amazing!!!!

Google
Great spot. Great coffee. That lavender 🪻 latte is quite delicious and they do serve the famous Boichik Bagels 🥯 here which was a nice treat. Outdoor seating only and can be limited. Regardless, the coffee and the people who work there will brighten your day.

Google
Tried the Autumn Spice Latte with 2 shots of espresso, steamed milk, and pumpkin syrup made from real pumpkin puree and spices. The taste was alright, giving off those festive holiday vibes. However, I'll likely stick to my favorite Habibi Latte next time.

Google
FOOD SAFETY CONCERN!! I had been going to the OAKLAND BAY STREET location about 3x times every week for the past 4 years (tipping every single time), BUT I will never go back. I reported this concern to Equator Coffees (Tina Malouf) but she ghosted me and as far as I know did not take ANY action as she had promised. Here's what happened: I saw a male supervisor SPIT into my bagel. No joke! Then, when he gave me the bagel he said with a smirk, the cream cheese is runny today. Instead of dealing with the employee. I contacted Tina to resolve this matter without the intention of not going public and as I mentioned, NOTHING WAS DONE. Be warned, FOOD SAFETY and CUSTOMER SERVICE is of no concern to this company.

Google
I go to a bunch of Equators, but this one is my fave. The staff here are outstanding, for having to work in a modified shipping container. Constantly cheery, they just crank out the outstanding coffee, every morning. You can't do better if you are looking for coffee in Oakland.

Google
Great coffee! We liked the habibi latte!

Google
Firebrand pastries, yum! Great atmosphere but the subpar service detracts from it. Wait staff can be rude and unwelcoming, they're slow yet rush to throw out orders; check yours for accuracy before you leave. Even the convenience of their location does not encourage return visits.

Yelp
My first time coming here! Cute coffee shop to stop by on a sunny day! They've got outdoor seating, with enough room for strollers and such. I had a fun time musing their menu. Tons of fun seasonal flavors. The Blueberry Sage Matcha Cream was delicious! Nice service, and drinks came out pretty fast.
google avatar

Felix W.

Yelp
I got an espresso. Tried their seasonal single origin (Ethiopia wushwush) Good crema and layered flavors. Mild acidity with citrus and lime notes, balanced by floral undertones. Mouthfeel was slightly lacking. A little more body would have made it even better. 3.5/5

Yelp
This place is just alright. I come here because they're open earlier than some other shops. They have outdoor seating, but if it's the cold morning, they have overhead heaters on. There's not much parking so it's not a place I'd sit and hang out at anyway. Their set up is pretty secure though, with their planter tables and string lights. The service is ok, you can also order online (but not the seasonal drinks and more complicated orders). I liked the maple black sesame latte (seasonal). I've also tried the turmeric latte and the habibi chai, and both were more milky in flavor than anything else.

Sirina N.

Yelp
Came here to kill some time before traffic on my way back from SFO. It was INCREDIBLE. The Habibi latte is a must try. But also I've never seen a place have a rooibos Chai. Ahh I was in heaven. The staff was extremely friendly even though they were about to close. they made me feel very welcomed. After the coffee we walked around and enjoyed watching the wind surfers.

Yelp
Good experience! The vibes outside were really nice with the weather! The coffee was really tasty and will definitely come back for more!

Yelp
I stumbled upon this little gem while stopping at Whole Foods. I am so glad I made the trek across the street. They had nice variety of your classic drinks along with some seasonal offerings. I went with the golden milk latte and a veggie breakfast sandwich. Both items were delightful and I think I enjoyed the seedy sandwich bread the most! I was also grateful for the overhead heaters as it was rather chilly, nice touch!!
google avatar

Sandra J.

Yelp
This coffee shop is amazing, their coffee offering are incredible. I love the Brainfood latte with the benefits. Their breakfast sandwich is INCREDIBLE!!!! Like a real full on meal that fills you up. I also like the fact it's outside and I can walk my dog there. Win win win win win. All around good. The people that work there are so nice and they always play good music too! 100% you all are running a goo business and doing a really great job. The online ordering is super convenient and appreciated as well.

Yelp
Waited 10 minutes for our drinks, pretty chill environment. Cherry Blossom Iced Matcha Cream - lacked matcha flavor but the cream had good cherry blossom flavor. Overall an alright drink 3.5/5 Raspberry Sparkling Lemonade - refreshing but lacked raspberry flavor, very sour and tart 3/5 Would come again and try other drinks!
google avatar

Connie C.

Yelp
I love that they offer unique options like lavendar vanilla, habibi (orange blossom), brainwash (mushroom and cocoa, apparently good for anxiety and other benefits I forgot but the staff will explain it if you ask), and seasonal items like cherry blossom and raspberry mocha/coldbrew (summer). I ordered the iced habibi latte and I really enjoyed it! It's a light latte, the orange blossom flavor is nice and subtle. Orange blossom is floral, so don't expect any acidic citrus flavors. This place is outdoors, with limited outdoor seating, and shares the seating with Avotoasty. Great little stop for a little treat while I walked the lake in the morning. Would love to come back to try their other options!
google avatar

Yelp
Was next door getting some breakfast and while waiting I figured - I always see bottled Equator coffee at the grocery store and have always been curious. They have a large menu and seasonal items. I appreciate that the choices on the menu were not complicated and anyone could understand what you are ordering :) I generally order cold brew with cream at other coffee shops and saw that they had it so gave it a try. Upon ordering they did inform me that it would take about 15 minutes. I failed to ask why but I realized they were making a new batch of cold brew. Once I got the coffee I was amazed! It was delicious and not filled with sugar/sweeteners as other coffee shops are. I will 100% come back again and try their other options. There is limited outdoor seating, but worth the wait to get the coffee.

Yelp
3.5 for my particular order. The Breakfast Sandwich was solid and I'd order again in a heartbeat. My chai latte tasted more watered down than I'd like. Convenient location if you live nearby/can walk with nice seating space between Equator and Avotasty. There's not a lot of parking. Prices weren't bad. Server that was taking orders was very friendly. So overall vibes are good.

Luna S.

Yelp
I am a coffee snob and I love their coffee. They have a variety of yummy specialty drinks too. I also love their staff. The location is cute. Love saying hi to all the doggos in the mornings.

Yelp
Sadly, nothing has changed here. This morning (a saturday), my friends and I finished class and decided to have some coffee. There were two people ahead of me in line and I ordered a pear spice latte, while my friend ordered a regular latte. The lady at the counter told us that it might take up to 15 minutes to get our drinks because they were a bit backed up, but that they finally had two people working and it should be faster. When it comes to making promises at work, I'm a fan of underpromise and overdeliver. So hearing that it would be 15 minutes max, I was hopeful. 27 minutes later, I had my drink. I'm sorry, but how the heck does it take that long to get a latte?! Feels like shit operations on their part as they kept taking online orders that kept them backed up and didn't have the right amount of people working.

Yelp
Mmmm so good. I love Equator Coffee but don't get to visit often. I was in the area for a Yelp Elite event though, and swung by. It was around 9 or so when I arrived, so there was a bit of a line, but they move pretty quickly. I ordered a habibi latte for the husband and a lavender vanilla latte for myself. Got the drinks a few minutes later, and I was on my way. Both drinks were really good! I preferred the vanilla lavender, but my husband enjoyed his drink.

Yalile Y.

Yelp
Went to equator coffeee and ordered a vanilla cold brew and a plain latte. The cold brew was good, tasted more like ice coffee but had yummy hints of blueberry. The latte on the other hand was horrible, the milk tasted burnt. Tasted like I was drinking a campfire, I saw the guy steaming it for approximately 40+ seconds and knew it was too long. It was undrinkable, so disappointed and a waste of money.
google avatar

Joyce S.

Yelp
Busy area with meter parkings. Option to online ordering. Ordered iced vanilla oat latte. Medium roast with vanilla flavor. Latte was delicious. Friendly staff Long bench counter outdoor seatings.

Iris S.

Yelp
Great food and amazing coffee. I had sandwiches there. They are also dog friendly which is great on a weekend when you want your pup to join the fun.
google avatar

Yelp
Right across from Whole Foods , crafted bevs, worth the waiting about 10 mins when it's not too busy. Communal seating in between this place and Avotasty. Street parking. Coffee is really good ... try the cherry blossom matcha. Pastries are just aight.
google avatar

Yelp
I went here for a quick caffeine boost before I headed to the City. I had came across this Coffee shop going to another place for Breakfast. It has a really good pour over and also a nice little shot of espresso shot called "eye of the Tiger" which will get you going. They have non dairy options and also baked goods and Boichik bagels. It has a few parking places on the street but definitely worth a stop for a quick coffee or morning tea.
google avatar

Ryan B.

Yelp
Love this place. It's so cute and charming. The staff are always friendly. Their coffee is perfect!
google avatar

Courtney S.

Yelp
The matcha Shakerato was AMAZING! Nice little outdoor seating area if you want to just hang out with a friend or read a book. I wish they had more sandwich options but it is just a small coffee spot in the cut. I'll definitely be back to try more of their coffeee!
google avatar

Yelp
Great coffee and convenient to walk up to! I've gone here countless times for a variety of lattes, coffee/tea, and baked goods (most that they get locally from Firebrand or another bakery I think for the vegan donuts), and have basically never had a bad experience. My go to that is solid is a 10oz almond milk latte ($5.50). Just be mindful if it's a peak time, it's may take a bit to wait for the coffee (maybe 10ish minutes) so I recommend ordering ahead on their app if you want to ensure you can grab and go. Also, always thought it's funny they have 10 oz and 16 oz options because I just want that 12 oz haha, but not a big deal at all. They have dog milk bone treats and water, which my pup aleays appreciates! The staff is always friendly. The vibe is cute. Highly recommend coming here!!
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
Very nice coffee drinks and beans in a cute hipster spot. Be prepared for a bit of a line.
google avatar

Amber T.

Yelp
Good place for coffee and a quick bite. We both got caramel lattes and their chocolate and black forest ham croissants. The lattes were sweet but didn't taste like artificial caramel which is always a concern of mine when I order that flavor. I appreciated that. Their croissants were fluffy but had that crunch when you bite into them. They have a few tables for you to sit down and enjoy your coffee. Their staff is friendly and service is quick.

Yelp
MATCHA: my new passion is all things matcha. Went to Equator to get my matcha fix this morning ! It's in a cute container opposite Whole Foods Market and near urban remedy. Order the 16oz with almond milk and pay . Luckily it's a slow day and my latte is ready in less than 5 mins. Great signage and outdoor area for a non Rainy day. They also have lots of pastries .. croissants and ready to buy items like more lattes. They even have a Habibi latte which I can't wait to try. Will Be Back!
google avatar

Lillian B.

Yelp
Amazing vegan donuts!!! I got the classic donut topped with the Oreo crumble. Yum! Great spot if you're not in a rush to be anywhere.
google avatar

Anna D.

Yelp
The storefront is tiny but the menu is extensive! The flavor options for coffee drinks are so good!! Richer flavor options than a lot of cafes. Personally love the habibi with orange blossom, cardamom, and vanilla. Pastries are about average for a place like this! Good but nothing to die for (if one would ever die for a pastry).
google avatar

Winnie Y.

Yelp
Ordered a Habibi Latte and Breakfast Sandwich (without prosciutto) and they were both SO delicious. Next time I'll probably order a larger coffee size. Pricey but forgivable considering the quality and its location. There's limited seating but people come and go quickly. If you're here during a busy time such as on weekend mornings, expect a wait with a line. The trash cans were overflowing and some of the items on the coffee cart area such as the napkins were a bit low on stock, but I appreciate the employees for doing their best during the morning rush hours. Overall I had a good experience here and would definitely come back.
google avatar

Kyshia M.

Yelp
I've been meaning to stop here whenever I go to Whole Foods so we stopped here during our walk around the lake for a little pick me up. I'm glad we decided to stop here. I ordered the lavender vanilla latte and it was super good. They recommended the specialty coffee for the day and so I thought, sure why not! I forget what it's called but it had a hint of spice. Would make an ideal fall favorite for sure. That's the vibe I got from it. Parking is slim... very. Seating is all outdoor and limited. This space is primarily like a walk up and go type of coffee spot.
google avatar

Jude D.

Yelp
Ok, this might be the best coffee I've ever had. I tried their blackberry cream cold brew, which consists of sparkling water, espresso, blackberry syrup and house made whip cream. It sounds bizarre but it's so good. Still has a coffee flavor but is light and sweet and refreshing. It's addicting cause I already want another one!
google avatar

Roy A.

Yelp
I usually walk to Whole Foods for lunch and have been passing up Equator Coffee for months. Today I decided to stop by and give it a shot. Upon arrival I decided I didn't want coffee and wanted to venture out and try the Rooibos Chai Tea with a surcharge for Oat Milk. So not something I would order. I sat down a enjoyed the high chair and table with cactus down the center. As I waited I noticed a very high concentration of flys hovering in the air which took my experience down to 4 stars because when the tea arrived it was truly amazing. I will definitely be back to get another cup of their delicious tea.
google avatar

Israel M.

Yelp
Great coffee, poor system for processing orders. Walk-ins take longer than an online orders, even if the cafe is empty. They need to figure out a better solution to maintain returning customers. Also, their app is crap! It literally never works for me, and customer support never responded, shitty IT I suppose.
google avatar

Ella W.

Yelp
Cute, conveniently located right next to Lake Merritt, this is the perfect place to grab a coffee before taking your dog out for a walk around the lake. Not a ton of parking in the area- just street parking. I was able to park right out front of it when I arrived at opening.
google avatar

Anna G.

Yelp
Got their limited time Habibi latte and the breakfast sandwich. Both were really good!

Thomas M.

Yelp
A nice little spot with a spacious, comfortable, shaded outdoor seating area. It's a good place to spend time on a nice day. Drinks are good too
google avatar

Yelp
After shopping around Whole Foods Market across the street I finally tried out Equator Coffees. I did not regret trying this place out. I almost went to Starbucks but luckily I did not see a huge crowd at Equator. Equator Coffees had good customer service. When I cross the street from Whole Foods Market I was greeted right away. It was hard to know where to go to since Urban Remedy was next door. The outdoor ordering can be confusing. My drink turn out great. It tasted great. Not much sugar in my drink. They made my drink just right. Next time I shop at Whole Foods Market I will try Equator Coffees again.

Rory ..

Yelp
I ordered a Habibi latte over Uber Eats. My partner and I had become obsessed with this latte and never had an issues with it until recently. The last 2 times we ordered it, the latte was SUPER watered down and tasted like a cup of oat milk with a few drops of espresso. Not sure why the quality suddenly changed but it's sad because I really loved that latte.
google avatar

Angel L.

Yelp
Box style with seating that has a cover. Really good sunlight and wifi can be connected to Whole Foods right across. Lots of seasonal drinks and espresso tastes great! The outdoor area is perfect for chatting or even working with the perfect amount of sunlight. Staff were all really friendly. I ordered an iced macchiato but they only had iced lattes so they made sure to make it less milky for me upon my request (to mimic more of a macchiato). Parking all on the streets.
google avatar

Kelly L.

Yelp
Stopped by here one morning and ordered a iced vanilla latte. Cute little coffee shop, friendly staff and yummy latte! There's also a nice seating area with lots of succulents.
google avatar

Bjorn t.

Yelp
A really wonderful group of folks work here, and they help make mornings in Oakland better. Great, consistent service with their espresso, an amazing breakfast sandwich and good baked items from local shops are on the menu. This one can get backed up with a lot of online orders, so just be conscious of this if you're visiting during busy commuting hours.

Diana S.

Yelp
I love the lavender vanilla latte. I've never been to the coffee shop but their delivery service is great, they're always on time (sometimes even early). I look forward to trying other menu items.
google avatar

Yelp
The only times I've visited this coffee stop was as a reward for going to the dentist (who is nearby on Pill Hill.) Ambience - While the seating is outdoor, there are large heaters up top to provide some comfort. The location itself shields guests from the wind. - The tables are comfortable benches with ample room between chairs. I would say this is a great spot to read or catch up with a friend. Coffee - Their espresso is likely made with the Tigerwalk Espresso blend which is on the medium side. I was first introduced via the mocha latte and have since enjoyed making my own lattes using these beans at home. - I enjoy the 10 oz. size for their small - it's neither too big nor too small. It's just enough to leave you wanting for a bit more... In a good way Seasonal Flavors - Pumpkin Spice (Nov. 2022) - I did not love this flavour which may be a moot point now that that season's flavour is over. But either way, I found it to taste like the mellow spices in the mix. While the drink was mellow in sweetness by design, I couldn't bring myself to finish. - Maple Walnut (Jan 2023) - THIS IS AMAZING. I am so glad the barista talked me into giving it a try. Like he said, it has a mellow sweetness and had a tiny bit of welcome bitterness. The combination of flavors had a hint of maple without the syrup after taste. If you want a smooth and delicious switch-up of your usual latte, espresso, mocha... routine, then I recommend this latte flavour. Service - The baristas here are so chatty and friendly. It really makes me feel welcome every time I visit. Although, maybe it's just the stark contrast to the discomfort of a dental visit... just kidding (my dentist is great, too!)
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious drinks and food; the breakfast sandwich here is one of a kind! Friendly staff, too. I would have given them 5 stars but they don't allow you to order on the Equator app which can be pretty inconvenient for working folks on the go like me.
google avatar

Diane S.

Yelp
Take my money! Honestly, I sometimes wish I never discovered their Shakearto. In one week, I visited Equator at least three times which hit my wallet and jitters with full force. The 8 oz. classic Shakearto really shakes you awake or more accurately punches you in the face. It consists of a double shot espresso of your choice (single-origin is $0.50 extra), heavy cream, and brown sugar. All shaken to perfection. Another fan favorite of mine is the glorious $8 breakfast sando. A veggie frittata, smeared with light spicy mayo, and topped with avocado in between pumpkin flax seed sourdough. Ughhh so good. You can add prosciutto for an extra $2. It can get really busy here. Parking is limited and hard to come by. For pick-up, I'd order ahead on DoorDash. I'm hoping to keep this place as a weekend treat or when I need a pick-me-up during a stressful day at work.
google avatar

Aya E.

Yelp
Start your Friday right with a latte to end the workweek on a productive note! A friend and I stopped by for a quick drink before getting to work. Equator Coffees is a short walk away from Lake Merritt and is entirely outdoors, which I thought was pretty cool! I ordered a 16oz Scratch Caramel Ice Latte ($5.25). It was just the right amount of sweetness but could have used a little more caramel personally. Otherwise, it was a solid drink and definitely got me through the day! The ambiance here is super casual. It's definitely a nice place to come to to get work done while enjoying some natural sunlight and air. I'd recommend checking this place out if you haven't yet!
google avatar

Mimrah H.

Yelp
This is a cute small coffee shop with house-made syrups! I'm always on the search for some house-made syrups cause they make the coffee taste amazing! I tried their vanilla latte - it was yum! The foam was soft and the right amount of tiny bubbles. The service was super fast and the staff was super friendly! There isn't much of a seating area but the coffee is well worth the wait! It happens to be super close to the lake, so it's a great place to grab coffee and go for a quick walk!

Yelp
Super expensive & I wasn't impressed by their coffee. I tried several different "highly rated/ recommended beans", (light, medium & dark) & finally decided that these folks need to relearn how to roast coffee beans. Not impressed to the slightest. To add, my wife tried their matcha latte and said it was like they squeezed the liquid from a green marker to add flavor. This place is all hype, no taste.
