The Best Restaurants in Tijuana, Mexico | Eater San Diego

"Inspired by the seafood carts and seafood taquerias of Tijuana, chef Javier Plascencia’s “cocina de mariscos”, opened in 2009 to bring a transcendent Mexican raw bar and hot bar using fresh, high-quality seafood from local waters to La Recta. A nice selection of Baja California oysters, pismo clams, and chocolatas, plus either red, black, or classic green aguachiles are well paired with Mexican wine or Mexican craft beer. Beer battered fish tacos, and camarón enchilado tacos highlight the flavors of the street, however, the tasty fish birria taco is tops, a celebration of all that is great about Tijuana on a tortilla." - Bill Esparza

Google
This place has very original dishes, combinations of flavors not so common, however, sometimes so many flavors combined make you feel that everything kind of tastes the same. That is how I describe our experience here, the food is good although nothing extraordinary. The place is small with a nice atmosphere and decor. Very limited parking.

I’ve been there a couple of times and I loved it. Everything is fresh and tasty.

Great food but san diego prices. Not worth coming

I love this place. I bring my friends here. The food (seafood) and ambiance is always so great. The service is usually fine but it is definitely an opportunity to make it more consistently great. I love the tacos with inventive ingredients. Today, I tried the broccolini taco for the first time. While, it had broccoli instead of broccolini, I still found it tasty with it's mix of shrimp, avocado, and garlic chips. It just worked for me. The cocktails I had tonight, the Janeiro, didn't work for me. Too sweet and not as citrusy as I'd expected. But I don't knock the place because I know there would have been something I would have loved on the cocktail menu. This restaurant is one in a collection of restaurants chef-ed in part by Javier Placensia, a local chef célèbre. The food is interesting and experience fantastic. I only wish the menu had a little more variance. That it was a little more risk taking. I love Mexican food but I'm not always up for tacos, tostadas, or aguachiles. Sometimes, I want something more substantial. The last time I did order a plato fuerte but it was just grilled veggies and the seafood choice in a sauce. A delicious sauce, but nonetheless not exactly exciting. Recommended.

This review is for the evening of November 9 for dinner that ended at 815pm. The server wouldn't let me leave without leaving extra tip on the card after providing a cash tip and showing him the cash. He went on and tried to re swipe my card 3 times and show which tip Option was avail and made us feel bad that we didn't add extra tip. He should know that tip is an option not mandatory. Horrible service. And won't come back. After we gave him a percentage tip so we can leave the restaurant he shook his head in disbelief. Don't come here. Go elsewhere for better service It's too bad because I'm starting a new food tour company to bring Americans to TJ and enjoy the wonderful blossoming culinary scene here. This restaurant is not on my long list of places for the world to experience as much as it should be due to service. For the record I’ve been in TJ every week for months creating relationships and visiting awesome restaurants all over TJ. From bakeries to cafes , tacos spots , cervecherias, cervercias, sit down places such as La Espadana ...and everything in between, NON of the restaurants, atleast 100 I’ve visited and documented..treated me like this. Infact service in Mexico is outstanding and impressive with genuine authentic care! Shame on FOH management for allowing this behavior and treatment of customers to happen. One bad seed can ruin it all unfortunately. Check my yelp review too. Food was good. Shrimp on the mains section was a bit rubbery and dry. Tostadas are packed with flavor and fresh fish. Ambiance was good.

A Tijuana staple. Chef Javier Plascencia has created an instant classic honoring Baja ingredients. I highly recommend the Tijuanero! They also carry a basic selection of local award-winning craft beer.

Great seafood with the touch of chef Javier Plascencia the king of Baja Med cuisine

Google
No value proposition. More expensive than San Diego seafood restaurants. This is how it works portions are small, so you need to place two or three orders to fill up, making this very pricy, when in San Diego you order one dish with appetizer you end up paying less, getting better quality, quantity and value for your money.

Yelp
This is an excellent restaurant in a great neighborhood, serving top-notch seafood for about half what you'd pay for such beautiful (but less-inspired) seafood north of the border. Here's what we enjoyed so much that we'll be back again soon. ** FOOD ** Mixto Coctel: A truly delicious and pretty seafood cocktail (Mexican style, more like a soup thick with seafood and avacado than that US shrimp dippin' thing). The coctel contained shrimp, octopus, and a new one for me: callo de hacha. I had to look that one up -- it comes from something that looks like an ugly scallop or oversized abalone. Coctel came with crackers and tostadas. So good! Ensenada de Pescado: A far more flavorful and larger fish taco than you may be used to. There was a hot sauce the waitress warned us about that worked out nicely with it. Birria de Pescado: OK, when I think Birria, I think of a hearty stew involving goats or cows. In this case, it's big oblongs of tuna(?) simmered in birria sauce, making those oblongs soft hunks of flavor with plenty of adobada. It came topped with avacado and sauce, and was even bigger than the regular fish taco. ** DRINKS** Gin Tonic con Pepino: really refreshing with cucumber water Jarrito Veraniego: A beautiful painted clay jar with tequila and citrus juice, with a sour tamarind candy fused to a fork, which was great for nibbling on and stirring the drink. ** THE PLACE AND THE PEOPLE ** It's at the end corner of a strip mall, with inside and outside tables. Interior was super clean and pretty, with a gleaming counter at one end. The staff was very friendly and helpful, albiet only in Spanish, but you'll figure things out just by pointing. All told: we would have stayed and enjoyed more dishes for much longer, except there was much more eating to be done that TJ day! Gotta pace oneself.

Yelp
Best consomé de pescado I've had. Tacos were loaded with crispy shrimp. Ordered fish and chips to share with my son, was not disappointed, fish was flaky shoestring fries were crunchy in a good way.

Yelp
Great service. Outdoor seating. Delicious seafood, including the clam chowder, which is hard to come by in most seafood places I've frequented in Mexico. If you opt for the shrimp tacos, they'll ask if you want classic. Don't get those. The shrimp on this style is breaded, plain, and greasy. The scallop and shrimp ceviche, on the other hand, was delicious.

Yelp
The review is for dinner on November 9 and 815pm. Service deserves - 5 stars. The server wouldn't let us leave without leaving extra tip on the card after providing a cash tip and showing him the cash. He went on and tried to re swipe my card 3 times and show which tip option was avail on the card machine and made us feel bad that we didn't add extra tip!!! He should know that tip is an option not mandatory. Horrible service. And won't come back! After we gave him a percentage so we can finally leave the restaurant he shook his head in disbelief. He made our experience go from stellar to second class citizen real quick. If service is what you are expecting from this high end establishment that was raved about on EATER...Go elsewhere imo. It's too bad because I'm starting a new food tour company to bring Americans and tourist from all over the world to the wonderful city of TJ and enjoy the wonderful culinary scene here. This restaurant was on the list ...however it is no longer on my long list of places for the world to experience due to the service and the way the server treated us. Personal feel and opinion on the experience - Just because we are Americans we shouldn't be treated differently. Cmon..don't give the well known chef and the new amazing culinary scene in TJ a bad name and bring back the negative unfair reputation known for the old ways of treating foreign customers. This is the new TJ, not the old Mr. Server! For the record I've been in TJ every week for months creating relationships and visiting awesome restaurants all over TJ. NON of the restaurants, atleast 100, treated me like this. Shame on FOH management for allowing this to happen. Food was good. Ambiance is solid.

Yelp
I am a huge fan of Javier Plascencia and his culinary work as you can tell from my reviews here on Yelp and my dinning in his establishments all over Baja; however, I was severely under impressed with this location. They brought me a menu that was on a clipboard and was obviously printed so it could be changed frequently it was at least five pages long. I got very excited perusing the menu. I found so many things I wanted to order and got very excited that I was going to have a remarkable meal one that I am accustomed to in a Javier Plascencia establishment. The waiter showed up to take our order and literally everything that I wanted to eat they did not have. I am not talking about one or two items but many many things. With a clipboard computer printer menu it should be easy to actually present what you have available not a dream list. Once I have been told for the fifth or sixth time that an item I want to order is not available I have pretty much lost interest in dining in the establishment. But we did stay and order and simply were not impressed with the food we were served. I hate to say it but I probably would not return. The three stars are for the cocktail and non seafood items

Yelp
I walked in here for lunch based on everything I know and enjoy about chef Javier Plascencia and how much I have enjoyed pretty much everything he's involved with. This is his mariscos place and so I finally made it in here, beautiful restaurant , looks small from outside but it's actually pretty big once you walk inside , they even have a small bar inside, beautiful decor , friendly waiters, quick service . I ordered up a couple of things in order to get a taste of as much as I could, I must say that the aguachiles were just out of this world , full of flavor , fresh , clean, amazing aguachiles . The taco de pescado was Baja California on a plate , the fish was cooked to perfection, full of explosive flavors, a must . The caldito de pescado , wow, super good, great flavor , I thoroughly enjoyed the caldito , the shrimp cocktail was also very good, fresh and plentiful . I'm glad I finally made it out here and will definitely be back, this is the place for mariscos here in Tijuana if you ask me .

Yelp
I host a monthly dining event across the border and for January 2019's event we checked out Erizo. It is located in the walkable Gabilondo near several other great restaurants. I slammed this place with twenty plus diners and we had a fine dining experience. Erizo is one of the numerous creations of chef Javier Plascencia. It has a coastal vibe with typical Baja California fare. The menu is extensive and is around five pages. I had already scanned the menu online and was quick to pitch my order. I ordered a classic Margarita and three tacos: Gobernador, Marlin Ahumado and Camaron Enchilado. We enjoyed chips and salsa while we waited for our plates. The green salsa (with Serrano peppers I believe) especially stood out to us. It had some spiciness to it, but it wasn't ridiculously hot. My tacos were great and I would definitely order them again. About half through I ordered a glass of white wine (Casa Magoni) and surprisingly it went well with order. The service was good and the prices were on point for comparable places in the neighborhood. The establishment was very clean and seemed well maintained. If you are in Tijuana and want to try some good seafood check out Erizo.

Yelp
Mixta para Picar Pulpo ,Camarón ,Callo de hacha - so good ! Ceviche verde Yum! Taco de pescado, Taco de Marlin, Taco Gobernador -- all was so delicious! Service was great & our was waitress was super nice, she helped use choose our food since it was our first time. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
We are trying to eat in as many places as possible in our tj trip and the gf wanted mariscos so we came here since it was near our hotel. We ordered the cebiche peruano and it was great, a bit spicy but thankfully I ordered the IPA beer called "Lupulosa"! The beer has a 7 % alcohol so definitely hot the spot i guess that is why im still on the table writing this. I noticed some yelp reviews complaining about the servers not being on top but by the time I wanted the check I made myself notice to ask for the check and they took no time is providing it to me so the service was good. Great ceciche, awesome beer and good service. 5 stars all the way.

Yelp
I was looking forward to trying out Erizo based on the excellent Yelp reviews. However, based on my experience with them yesterday, they've since dropped the ball. I'm surely not the only person who thinks so either. Even though we were there on a Friday night, the place was half-empty. With my boyfriend (Jorge A.'s review below with pictures), we ordered the octopus carpaccio (carpaccio de pulpo), scallop tiradito (tiradito de callo hacho), the tijuanero taco, the mesquite octopus (taco de pulpo mezquite), and the "Peruvian" ceviche (ceviche peruano). I thought the dinner was off to a good start when we got tostadas and packaged saltine crackers (saladitas) along with three salsas and little bowls of cilantro and onions. We also got a cup of shrimp soup/broth each which my boyfriend loved. He finished his and even had half of mine, and apparently it's a very traditional soup that his mom makes often. However, there was a bit of a problem with the physical table we were sitting at. It was extremely wobbly, so before he nabbed my cup of shrimp broth, a lot of it spilled all over the table. We ended up switching our seats. I sat at the more wobbly end because I tend to move less than he does, and he ended up sitting on the side. One of the servers noticed our change, and ended up coming over to ask if the table was wobbly, and he put something underneath one of the table legs to fix it. I really appreciated the server stepping in, but if this is a known problem with the tables, it might be a good idea to check before patrons take their seats. Aside from this, our experience was the service was strange. At some point, one of the servers (we had about three different ones taking turns attending--in some cases, ignoring--us) walked to our table and without saying anything removed the small cups of onions and cilantro from our table. As far as the food, I'm sad to say it was mediocre. I was excited by the dishes offered and was really hoping to like them. Octopus carpaccio: Drenched in soy sauce which made the octopus much too salty. Frankly, I ended up liking the garnishes on top more. There were cactus bits (nopal) along with avocado which worked well together. Scallop tiradito: Not particularly special or flavorful. There was nothing wrong with it though (which unfortunately means it was actually my favorite dish). The tostadas served with this were also stale. Tacos: Stale tortillas? Overheated tortillas? I have no idea, but it was in that moment I realized a good tortilla could make or break a taco. And in this case, I absolutely couldn't focus on anything except for how the tortilla tasted stale. Peruvian ceviche: They forgot corn. How could they possibly forget corn? Corn and squash are the cornerstone of Peruvian ceviche, and somehow they forgot it. As we were leaving, I mentioned to my boyfriend, "It tasted like food in San Diego." As a Tijuana native, he's extremely snobby about eating Mexican food in San Diego and prefers for us to cross the border for it, but even he couldn't help but agree. The prices weren't incredibly cheap either as all this rung in at about $62 USD, so there's just no real reason to come here.

Yelp
This place is amazing! The food is exquisite. The service is superb. We ordered the callo de hacha and the pulpo asado as appetizers and they were delicious. We also ordered the pozole de camarón and platillo de pescado zarandeado and oh my god! The best! The seasoning and food temperature is just perfect. Love this place! Definitely coming back

Yelp
Best seafood restaurant in town. We had a few seafood meals in our 4 day stay in Tijuana and this one is clearly the best. We really enjoyed their Tuna ceviche and fish tacos. This place is very airy and tastefully decorated. Best part, free wifi.

Mark C.

Yelp
Restaurant: very pleasant inside and open air at the front facing a golf course and on a side street so not so much traffic. Waiters are dressed well and attentive so excellent service. Overall a nice venue. Food: had 3 dishes I can comment on 1) the JAIBA ENCHIPOTLADA was delicious. Seemed like the crab was bathed in some kind of chipotle mayo as tasted a bit smoky......with pickled onions and an avocado slice on top with black volcanic salt which was obviously smoked and so crunchy...overall I give it a 4/5 and very enjoyable' 2) PULPO AL MEZQUITE was juicy and tender and the tortilla so charred by the grill it was heavenly a 5/5 without question; 3) guacamole was killer.....the avo had a rich flavor and the perfect amount of onion/tomato/cilantro and nice and chunky with the fresh limes squeezed on top it was one of the best I have had in Mexico and that is saying a lot since guac is usually very good in Mexico no matter where you go it is a thing of pride + really good local avocados not the useless haas we get in the states (and to add insult to injury the guac was $2.40 for a large order. I was alone on this trip but considering all the options with gourmet effort applied to every item on the menu I will bring my spouse there on the next trip and spend a couple of hours sitting, slowly enjoying/sharing the variet of food dish by dish and the peaceful location.

Jorge A.

Yelp
Ok, let me start out by saying that I was very excited to visit this place, as it was recommended by many friends, and the reviews were more than encouraging. The first bad experience was with the service. The dinner started out horribly because the waiters and hostess were very distracted and negligent of myself and partner, and with no reason, as it was 6pm and the place only had three other parties. When the menus were brought to us, we were offered no water, and I had to wait for the waiter to come back so I could order it and a beer. The complimentary tostadas were stale and tough - this will be a recurring theme in this review - and we finished them before the waiter came back to offer us food. We waited twenty minutes for the waiter to approach us, and afterwards, we still were not offered more water, or another drink. The hostess approached us when our glasses of water were empty, and instead of refilling them, she takes our cilantro, for absolutely no reason. We ordered everything at once and in sets, in fear that we would have to wait another twenty minutes to order something else. The Carpaccio de Pulpo was great, but nothing special; the same goes for the Tiradito de Callo, which also didn't do anything impressive for me. The Tijuanero's contents were delicious, but man, the tortilla was burnt and felt like chewing dry paste. The pulpo mesquite taco was also great, but ruined by the same tortilla problem. My girlfriend and I really wanted to help this place redeem itself, so we ordered the Ceviche Peruano, which is a favorite of ours, and we have tried it and loved in different places. This was the biggest disappointment, mainly because it was missing a crucial ingredient, the very thing that makes it Peruvian: the corn! Yup, it had no corn; we were both shocked, and even more by the fact that it was very salty. Upon finishing, I waved to them several times so I could pay and leave, and they were deliberately ignoring me, whilst making eye-contact. I waited about five minutes, waving, and staring so I could get my check. What kept me from giving Erizo one star is the actual good taste of the tacos' content, which by itself, I am sure would have been a great dish. Overall, average food, terrible service. Skip and visit Lion Fish.

Alton H.

Yelp
I am a huge fan of this place. It has replaced los Arcos as my go-to in Tijuana. This is my favorite Javier Plascencia restaurant because it takes something that I love, ceviche, and adds a distinctively Baja touch to the ingredient list. Plus, they host some cool events like the OaxaCalifornia Fest and invite awesome chefs from other places to mix it up with the local ingredients. Everytime I go, I have to order 2 tijuanero tacos. Octopus, shrimp and cecina (salty meat) on a vampiro style taco with cheese and lightly toasted on the grill so it is almost crispy. I got the sea scallop last time and loved it. During the OaxaCalifornia Fest they did tamales with mussles and a sea urchin taco that were 'de no mames' good. For the gluten free crowd, you have to order the 'leche de tigre' sea urchin and quail egg shot without the ponzu sauce. It doesn't say on the menu, but sneeks it in there. The place is busy and parking is tough sometimes. I was parking at the mall on the corner of Sonora and Aguas Calientes. It is cheap and i like to get a coffee at the starbucks before hitting the border line. Put this place on your list. It is worth the trip to TJ.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised. The food was flavorful and fresh. The Oyster shooters, amazing! Margaritas Devine. Is definitely worth the Day trips from Los Angeles.

Yelp
Extremely impressed by the "Cucarachas" dish. The shrimps were so well cooked you didn't need to tear of their shells. Also, I normally break out in hives when shellfish isn't fresh, that wasn't the case here at all.. the staff was extremely helpful and prompt with servicing our table. Can't wait to go again.

Yelp
Good fish and it was good. Took a little long but good. So good tacos de El Tijuanero! Muy rico will come back!

Yelp
This is the place to go of you want to see how the upper middle class live & they live good. All of chef Javier Placencia's restaurants are to notch, but this place gives a great example of what Baja brings to the Mexican culinary scene. The grilled tacos full of seafood & non traditional pairings like goat cheese, pesto and mushrooms create delectable bites! His ceviche verde is one of his signature dishes. It is fresh and tasty. The spice of the serranos does not over power the taste of the lime marinated fish and veggies.

Yelp
Food was very good and the margarita was the purest I've ever had all the flavors were delicious! Can't wait to visit again!

Yelp
We went for lunch and ate like kings at Erizo. Our hotel was within very easy walking distance and we had great range of tacos and some fantastic pulpo. The seafood here is amazing and I made a great discovery with some of their mixed beer cocktails. There were some great choices to be had and my wife and I had several. Very reasonable prices, especially with the strong dollar.
google avatar

melina j.

Yelp
Very good for the price! Highly encourage the octopus. Everything is good tho!
google avatar

Enrique D.

Yelp
Worst service, it took them 45 min to serve three tacos, the restaurant had only a couple of tables and all the waiters were busy with themselves, never coming back again.
google avatar

Chelo M.

Yelp
Erizo is a great place to eat to enjoy tasty, creative, and fresh seafood. The meal starts with a seafood broth where you can add onion, cilantro, and squeeze soñé lime juice. There are too many choices to pick but the best thing is you cannot go wrong with any selection. Even though there is a fish icon next to the house favorites, I think whatever one selects, it will become your favorite. My favorite drink is the bohemio, a mix of bohemia cerveza, tamarindo top with Tajin. Next thing is the decide what tostada, ceviche, or taco to select. I prefer the tostada verde de camaron and who can avoid the perfect Ensenada fish taco? Other items I've enjoyed are the tacos de pulpo, el tripadito: pulpo con tripita, and gobernador. It is the best place in South of the border for fresh seafood, refreshing drinks, and a cool place to enjoy some mariscos and if you are lucky, you get to see Chef Javier Plascencia hanging out doing his work. Just follow the map and you are there within 10 minutes from the border. Enjoy!

Yelp
Yum. This place is an elevated marisco joint. The food is delicious and well priced for the location. Service is ok-not super friendly but not rude.

Alexander R.

Yelp
This place hands down gets 5 stars. It was our first time eating at a more formal setting in Mexico and many people had told us it was good when we had passed it earlier that day, so we were expecting to eat well, but my expectations were surpassed. The staff was attentive and very friendly, and was very patient with me as my Spanish needs a lot of work. We ordered under platillos the Pescado zarandeado (spelling?) and tripe tacos and the taco Tijuanero and shrimp ceviche. Sadly I only got pics of the menu and ceviche :( but for any fellow Americans venturing into Mexico for the first time or just looking for a new place to eat, this is the place. Also, our dinner in US $ came out to about $50 which includes a bottle of wine, so it was very affordable considering how high end this place was. I recommend paying in pesos if possible.

Yelp
Hands down the best seafood restaurant in Tijuana... We live in LA and have been coming here for years now. Everything is excellent from the service, to the food, prices, etc. they have Valet Parking, awesome!

Reed K.

Yelp
I got the spicy fish with salad and the entry was excellent. I highly highly recommend the food at this place. Service is also excellent -- very friendly staff and very prompt.

Joe R.

Yelp
My family & I visited this place yesterday. The service was slow & they were not as attentive as I have experienced in other restaurants in Tijuana. The food was good but not great. I don't think I'll be back again since I've been to other restaurants with better service & food for the same prices. I think its a great place for appetizers & cocktails though!!

Carlos A.

Yelp
Place is calm and comfortable...and not your typical Marisco Sinaloense restaurant. The menu is loaded with Baja Med delicacies... Fresh seafood, cold and warm small plates. Try the ceviche verde and the seafood ramen. Finger licking good. The Tijuanero is delicious too, a grilled taco with octopus, cecina, shrimp and cheese!! Chase it all down with a local craft beer or wine from Guadalupe Valley. Eat local!

Jennifer H.

Yelp
I've eaten here many times, and like everything about this place. The food is usually outstanding, and the margaritas are excellent; however, I ate here two days ago and my lunch companion and I have been suffering from food poisoning ever since. I don't know if it was the tuna ceviche or contaminated ice in the drinks, but we are both suffering greatly today. I've lived and worked in Tijuana for many years, and this is the first time this has happened. I would suggest to patrons to order their drinks without ice and to stay away from the raw tuna.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant in TJ so far. The tostadas, sopas and ceviches are incredible. Best Sopa de Almejas on the area (It is the best I have try after the one in Pismo Beach).

Yelp
Best ceviche and tacos OF MY LIFE. Fresh, huge portions, prompt and attentive service, insanely good prices. We also go the strawberry tres leches cake and it was incredible.
