The Best Canned Goods Chefs Keep in Their Pantries | Eater

"The kitchen frequently relies on specialty tins as components: a splurge tin of white asparagus is used in at least two dishes on the menu, and a particular Spanish canned tuna is served simply — sometimes dressed with minced onion, olive oil, espelette, and presented alongside the restaurant’s signature Gildas — making preserved goods both a practical pantry staple and a gift-worthy product tied to the restaurant’s offerings." - Hilary Reid

Had an amazing experience at this restaurant! The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was perfect. Our server, Ever, was outstanding—attentive, friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed. Their recommendations were spot on, and they truly elevated our dining experience. Highly recommend and will definitely be back!

Absolutely love this place! Been coming here weekly now for over a year and it's always consistently amazing each and every time! The staff here are the sweetest, they always make fantastic recommendations whenever we want to deviate from our usual course. The service that we get here is always above and beyond! Will always come back.

Daniel

Google
Hands down one of the best Mexican restaurants in the area! The queso and salsa were packed with flavor, and the fajitas were absolutely delicious. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home. This place has officially become our go-to for Mexican food. If you're looking for great food and great service, you’ve found your spot!

Kirsten Peoples

Google
Late lunch (or early diner) we were the only ones in the dining room Great flavor! Rice, refried beans, charro beans, chicken, enchiladas! All great! We will be returning! Ask for the spicy salsa to give yourself a great flavor kick with the chips! Our timing was perfect for up front parking!

Everything was great, the food portions are huge. Pacifico can feed two people and everything else tasted well. The only negative is the lighting, it's not very good, where we sat we couldn't even see the menu. Other areas were super bight and the light colors are mismatched.

Barbara Baron

Google
Great service from waitress Katty ,pleasant attitude and food was delicious. Enchiladas plate wonderful and spicy salsa great with food and chips. Music and margaritas 🍹 make visit worth going.

Google
We normally frequent the one in Frisco down Preston, but we came here for dinner to celebrate our friends engagement (her fave!!) The salsa is super flavorful, always on point. I usually get the chicken enchiladas with the white sour cream sauce, but I ended up getting the Pollo en Crema and it’s just as delicious. They’re able to accommodate 20 people on short notice and were very patient with split checks and about 8 kids under 13. We appreciate you, Ernesto’s!!

Mike Burton

Google
I enjoy the selection of different dishes but really appreciate the pick your combination choices. Normally we're seated within a minute or two upon entering which is amazing given this areas population

Yelp
First time at Ernesto's. I ordered a sangria margarita and it was fabulous! Chips and hot sauce were great, cheese dip was good. No complaints from us on the food. I'd definitely recommend. The restaurant was decorated nicely and seemed clean.

Yelp
This place has the best tacos and great margaritas! It's a cute hole in the wall! I love coming here with my husband for date night!
google avatar

Emmanuel Q.

Yelp
Absolutely a disgrace to call this place "fine Mexican food" nothing here is good. All microwaved premade food that's probably been sitting for hours, no idea how this place has this many good reviews. Guess all these people have never had actual Mexican food. To top it all off they have the unmitigated gall to charge high prices as if this was a fancy place with bomb food. All for some mediocre "Mexican" food. Don't waste your time. Drive up the street to Salsa Tex Mex for some decent Mexican food or Gloria's down the street for a better variety of Latin food.

Yelp
We moved to prosper a little over a year ago and had no idea this place existed! It's very hidden but close to Preston and first. So thankful we stumbled in here after trying Anamias (too long of a wait). Our server was fantastic, friendly and helped us make great choices for dinner. I had the platillo Pacifico and it was delicious and SO much food. My husband had the carnitas burrito and enjoyed his as well. The chips are thin and crispy- just like we like and our daughter gave her approval on the salsa. That's saying a lot coming from this picky 9 year old! Tried the premium margarita and the swirl and have to say the swirl was my favorite. Loved the interior decor. We will definitely be back!!

Yelp
Enjoyed a wonderful meal on the patio! I started with a drink from the bar menu - the Three mamasita margarita. I confirmed that it was a frozen margarita, cuz I dont care for "on the rocks!" I guess I imagined a swirl of the three flavors in one big glass. Well, it comes out like a flight of margaritas in these cute little glasses. You get one each of strawberry, peach and mango. It was yummy! My gkids wanted to try some, but I said no, this is gma's adult slurpee! For my entree I chose the David's Brisket Tacos. I love brisket tacos on a corn tortilla. It was so delicious! There were 3 on the plate, I could barely finish one with all those mini margs and chips! The weather was perfect to sit outside. Our server took great care of us. Sometimes you can get forgotten about when seated on the patio, but this was not the case. Had a great dining experience and I'll be back!

Yelp
This was my first time here. We had a dinner reservation for 15 last night and our waitress was fantastic and the food was amazing! I am very picky about my Mexican restaurants and the food and this place was 5 star! Thank you for the great food and excellent service.

Audrey D.

Yelp
Second time eating at this place and got sick both times! Don't waste your money! That will be my last time!

Yelp
Service, just awful! The waitress, not friendly!!! Ordered guacamole for BEFORE dinner but it came with our dinners, we told her to take it back. We moved here from California, I've been here one other time and didn't want to come back-food not good. I've had the best in California so nothing compares for me!!!!! I order safe, ground beef tacos so you can't really mess those up!!!!! I won't eat the rice and beans. Not good! Chicken to dry, no taste! Party of 5 and she adds gratuity to our bill, I guess because she knew she sucked?!!!!!! I miss good Mexican food!!!!!!!!

Yelp
My wife is Mexican and we went here for Cinco De Mayo. Hands down the worst meal (not just Tex Mex) that I have ever had. We started with the wait staff not knowing the names of the dishes we ordered. When the food was brought to the table, my wife was given a dish that she did not order. So it was sent back for the correct dish. When the wait staff served the new order we were told that I had her order and the new dish was mine. As we started eating the food texture and taste were similar supermarket microwaved chicken breast patty with a poorly flavored sauce over it. Although the wait staff apologized, the manager never came out to apologize for the mix up. Horrible experience!

Patricia D.

Yelp
Good food, speedy service. Get the queso fundido! So good, it won't disappoint. Nachos and burritos are so good too!

Yelp
Been coming here off and on for the past 4 years. Recently had another great dinner there, served both times by the amazing Amanda, who went out of her way to take care of us without fuss or bother. Meal plates are awesome as are the fajitas. Frozen margaritas are excellent without being doused with Triple Sec. Only drawback is the tap beer which has no head. Either poor kegging or too much soap residue left inside the glass. Remedy....drink bottled beer. Will definitely return with the family on our next visit to Dallas.

Yelp
Hosted 35 folks for dinner at Ernesto's. Staff was friendly and on point. Food was quick and so yummy. Great local favorite!!! Great service and ambiance with a large group. Support local owned and operated!!

Yelp
I honestly don't understand the reviews on this place. It is absolutely the worst Mexican food I have ever had. Save yourself some time and go somewhere else. Or just get a frozen meal at the grocery store and pop it in the microwave, as that will be higher quality than Ernesto's. We got 3 different margaritas and none of them are remotely edible. We did carry out and when I opened the bag with the drinks in it, I was smacked in the face with an extremely strong rubbing alcohol smell. The good news is that if you have any leftover margaritas after you're unable to drink them, you can always use it to clean your floors or sterilize an open wound. 0/10, never again.
google avatar

Rob B.

Yelp
Service and food quality were average at best. Watch your bill. They will overcharge you and try to add extras onto your bill. You order a cup you are being charged for a bowl. You order a house margarita you are getting charged a premium. This place used to be packed back in the day. Now empty tables and closed at 8pm.

Tyler G.

Yelp
If I could give this place 0 stars I would. For starters the waitress had no clue what she was doing. She messed up our orders at least one time each person (party of 7). We were gracious and tried to bare with her until three meals came out wrong. At that point we are already frustrated. Then we were each given our checks and four were incorrect. After 6 out of 7 were given back we proceeded to wait another 40 minutes for the last card. Absolutely awful food and horrible service. Take a look at my chicken down below.
google avatar

Joyce Y.

Yelp
Poor quality control. I ordered queso with beef and the container was only filled 2/3 of the way! The shrimp tacos had no shrimp. This place is a rip off, I won't be going back. Man taking orders over the phone was rude and aloof.
google avatar

Vinita R.

Yelp
This restaurant is always on point. If you are looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant this is the place to go. I absolutely love their salsa which sets the stage for any Mexican restaurant. Everything is always fresh and service is great. My plan is to try everything on the menu so I will be returning.

Hunter L.

Yelp
Terrible service, Terrible Food, Do Not Go! Been living in prosper for 6 years, coming here off and on.... Always disappointed Left today before even getting food... waiting 15 mins with no one stopping by after I finished my beer & chips. So when they finally came, got the check & left.

RG C.

Yelp
Highly disenchanted with this place. But, given that I've moved out this way from Southern California, what can I expect? I had hopes that this would at least be SEMI decent, but once again, the TEX of the Mex just left me with heartburn and feeling nauseated. Carne Asada Y Enchilada.... Disgusting. The margarita and the chips were the highlight. Oh, and the quesadilla. Note: I said chips, not chips AND salsa. All the salsas tasted like they had sugar in them with bo heat whatsoever. Also, to management, please make your waitress/waiters aware that for future reference, please make sure they give the entire party their food. Not just half of the party, and leave the rest on the tray on another table while they go and pick up empty plates from a table across, and then come back without cleaning their hands to serve the rest of the party their food! Entirely disrespectful!

T. C.

Yelp
I like the food here pretty well. The service seems fine too. It gets a little loud at lunch but it was a full restaurant. I will definitely come here again.
google avatar

Dan F.

Yelp
The food has really gone down hill, but even more frightening is they no longer require staff to wear masks, and have crammed tables so close together that you can feel the breath of the table next to you. We won't be coming here any more.

Lee C.

Yelp
The food was just okay. It seemed a bit pricy for the quality...our waiter was not friendly and seemed irritated we were there. When we asked for corn tortillas he mumbled as he was walking away that they would take some time. I won't be back. Plus it was dead at 1:00 on a Wednesday's. Should've known

Ryan W.

Yelp
Have eaten here prior and not sure what happened?! With that said, this was by far the worst experience that I've had & not sure if I'll be back. Called to place a To Go Order at 8:20 PM tonight after I finished working a 12 HR shift. Was transferred to 4 different people for some odd reason? After that some guy that said he was a Manager, got on the phone to take my Order and was condescending & arrogant to say the least. Placed my Order, arrived earlier than said ready time, picked up my food & all of my food is cold, not fresh, and my steak carne asada wasn't cooked as I requested for it to be when asked. It's as tough as nails, no flavor whatsoever. Very disappointed that this is how this Establishment is serving the fellow citizens of Prosper.

Yelp
Meh...we thought we'd give this place another shot. And I wish we would have just kept on driving past. We sat at a table for a good 5 minutes before I flagged someone down & asked for a waiter. When our waitress came up, she did not greet us. She asked if we'd been sitting there. I thought that was an odd question because we'd walked right past her to sit & she watched us sit down 5 minutes prior. She didn't ask if we wanted something to drink. I had to ask her to get us something; two waters, sangria & a Miller lite. She came back with the Sangria, no waters & no beer. She said they were out of Miller Lite but had everything else. My husband ordered a Pacifico. She returns with no beer & no waters. Apparently they were out of that too. The manager then came up & told us the supplier they use doesn't bring what they order. He was sorry they didn't have what we requested but they had Corona's. While all this was happening we still didn't have our waters nor did we have chips & salsa. We ended up flagging down the another server who was dropping off chips & salsa to tables & they gave us some. Chips were ok but the salsa left something to be desired. I like salsa with a bit of chunkiness and/or flavor to it. Instead I got tomato soup with little flavor. The waitress still wasn't engaged but I decided to continue with the dinner because maybe she was having a bad day. We order queso to snack on prior to dinner. Then I order a 1/2 order of fajita beef nachos & my husband got a cheese enchilada with steak & a crispy taco. Queso - it may have had two bits of jalapeños in it & had such a smoke flavor to it that it hit the back of my nasal cavity & was not appetizing. Dinner - the nachos did not have a pleasant flavor to them & I could only eat one before I was done. The cheese enchilada with fajita beef & taco was ok. I wish I could say there was something redeeming. Like the waitress was so awesome I could overlook the food being sub-par. Or the food was amazing so I could overlook the bad service. Neither was the case. So this restaurant is off our list of places to go to.

Yelp
We've been going to Ernesto's for about a year now. It is closest to our house and we have never had a bad meal their. They have lots of good options for children, and wonderful swirl margaritas for the adults. This is our go to Mexican place in Prosper.
google avatar

Belinda C.

Yelp
We love this chain. We found the Kruegerville location first. It's the closest thing we have found to San Antonio Tex-Mex. the margaritas are great. When we get chips we request the warm salsa. The brisket enchiladas are our favorite menu item. I also like the brisket tacos.

Cindy P.

Yelp
We go to the Prosper Ernesto's at least once every other week and love it. I love the dinner combo with the beef & chicken enchiladas with the queso sauce or I also really like the chicken chimichanga. My husband loves the chicken fajitas and also the chicken chimichanga. The portions are great especially the chicken in the fajitas. They definitely don't skimp on their portions and the chicken is always perfectly cooked and very tender and juicy. Their chips & salsa are wonderful too. Just the right amount of spiciness and the chips are always nice & crunchy. We tend to get there by 5:45 so we don't have to wait, but by the time we leave the place is usually packed. Great atmosphere for a small mom & pop type of place. The service has always been great too. This is definitely our #1 go to Mexican place.
google avatar

Patrick R.

Yelp
Won't be going to this location again. The server was rude and obnoxious. Asked us for our order then started a conversation mid order with a regular. Took 20 minutes to get the margaritas we ordered and the server couldn't be bothered with clearing plates and dishes off when we finished with the appetizer. Messed up my order after confirming twice with me which I thought was odd. If you get the overweight guy with salt and pepper hair and a goatee RUN! He needs to find another industry to work in because he sucks as a server.

L L.

Yelp
Went for dinner and have zero complaints. It was a busy Friday evening and we were seated quickly. Our server was amazing. He was an older gentleman with a great sense of humor. Our food was hot and tasted great. Will be back for sure
google avatar

Andres Z.

Yelp
First time here, with my family, and it was very disappointing. 1. The staff seemed put out that we showed up and our server was clearly unhappy to be taking care of us. 2. We stared at the same dirty tables the entire time we were in the restaurant and watched the "manager" continue to sit people around dirty tables. 3. The food was sub-par. Salsa was watery and they only brought us chip crumbs to eat the salsa with. Save yourself the time, money, and disappointment of eating here and go anywhere else, it will most likely be way better.

John B.

Yelp
The service from Tony was great. Sopaipillas were great also. Try the chili relleno, a meal in itself. Ask for the hot sauce with the chips. Provides a nice flavor and some heat. Music was a little too loud but we will be back as regulars.
google avatar

Christine M.

Yelp
They now close at 8:30??? Confused. On a Wednesday. I would never turn away business especially in these times. Guess they have it good. Disappointing.

Yelp
I visited from California seen the food pictures looked amazing but reviews kinda scared me . Still went to go eat and OMG is all I have to say . This place is sooooo amazing . Food is well prepped and you can tell they take pride in their food . I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone !!!

gianna g.

Yelp
Our server gianna was amazing!! food was amazing, and gianna is amazing! loved this place

Tara N.

Yelp
I love the garlic shrimp situation delicious and the yellow queso and chips and the margaritas!'

Kristy M.

Yelp
My friend and I love this place! The salsa is great and the Steak Fajita nachos are big enough to share for a meal. The service was exceptional as well. I want to go back!

Walter G.

Yelp
One of the best Mexican restaurants in the area. The staff is very attentive, the food is great, and the margaritas are off the chain!!!! When family comes to town, we always take them to Ernesto's for good food and fun.

Amber L.

Yelp
We ordered queso as an appetizer and it came out thick and mildly warm...almost like it had just been reheated and reheated all day. It looked like a can of Campbell's cheddar cheese soup before being cooked. Then our main dishes looked like it had just been thrown on the plate and served. Unfortunately, the flavor was not there either. We were hoping for some decent Mexican food as this was supposed to be "fine Mexican" but we were disappointed. I'd definitely go somewhere else over this place.

Claire D.

Yelp
Update: came here tonight and not sure why. I went to the bathroom to wash my hands and no paper towels are available. They've gone from the liquor closet being open to also lining the hallway to the bathroom with cases of beer. I guess this place really doesn't care about their liquor costs because the cases are open and easy for anyone to take a beer at their leisure on the way or way out of the restroom. It's also a hazard they are literally on the floor to trip on. Had to ask for chips and salsa. Food was awful. This is the last time for us. This place is a dump
google avatar

Maggie T.

Yelp
It's a cold and windy day...so I came for the tortilla soup. I've had this numerous times at the Frisco location and it never disappoints. Today was the same, but I tried the Prosper location. It's really cute and well decorated. Better than Frisco. The staff is super friendly and prompt. One of the bus boys asked me if I liked spicy salsa ( I do!) and he brought out the "secret" stuff. Off the menu is always a treat. This stuff packs a punch, but the smoky flavor is so delicious you forget that your mouth is on fire. . I added a couple tablespoons to my soup. Wonderful! So the soup--huge hot bowl of broth based chicken tortilla soup. Tons of melty gooey cheese, thin tortilla strips, half an avocado, pulled chicken breast and fresh pico de gallo. That last bit is my favorite because it's fresh and crunchy to contrast with the hot soup. ***stop the presses***i told my server that I liked the spicy salsa and he suggested a 3rd option to try...it came out warm--it was a wonderful surprise. It's not too spicy but has a smoky flavor that is nice. So...ask for a salsa flight if you come!

Blair H.

Yelp
Today my girlfriend and I stopped in for lunch on our day off and like every time we have been here before we were not disappointed! This place is a gem, I know it's full at night, but lunch should be busier come on people! Carlos was our server and he was great from the minute we sat down to the minute we left. Food was excellent as always (David's brisket tacos are my go to) and beer was crispy and cold. Thanks Ernesto's for keeping it consistent
google avatar

Karen D.

Yelp
Will never go back.... after waiting 15 minutes to be acknowledge by the bartender ..... we walked out. Drove 5 minutes up the road to Salsa Tex Mex!! They didn't disappoint.
google avatar

Michael N.

Yelp
Well this is my wife's favorite place for Mexican food. They know her when she walks in and bring a bowl (not a cup) of salsa because they know she will finish a cup with 3 chips. I think her blood is 50% hemoglobin and 50% salsa! That being said, I find the food pretty good, but not quite 5 star, because in Texas you have a lot of choices and lots of opinions out there. Definitely worth a shot though if you haven't been!

Nanette R.

Yelp
Friendly staff. Great food. If your a chips and salsa fan, their chips are thin and crispy. The absolute best. This is my go to in Prosper.

Geri H.

Yelp
We love this place and have never had a bad meal here. Some of the selections on their menu are absolutely outstanding. We usually go for the fancier things rather than just a burrito or tacos but it really doesn't matter because everything they make is really good. I have some favorites but I'd hate to put them all down as they probably take up to have this review. Highly recommend Ernestos. We go to the one on Gary Burns by the Walmart at least three times a month and will often celebrate birthdays here. They also make fantastic margaritas!!! If you have a room the desserts are well worth trying. I think we've tried everything they have at one point or another... And you should too!!
google avatar

Nora N.

Yelp
This spot does not disappoint. Authentic, quick and pretty darn good. Their Pollo en Crema and Nachos Locos are the stuff fast foodie dreams are made of. Not to mention, don't think I would have made it through the pandemic sanely without their margaritas to-go! Bueno! If I were being really picky I'd deduct a point for the tortilla chips which always seem a little overcooked and lack flavor but I won't...because chips are free! Love this place...5 stars.
google avatar

Isabella Y.

Yelp
Pretty good but this is one of those restaurants that you have to know what to order. It was our first time and we just got what sounded good. My friend got the Mojo de Aja and it said it came with garlic and lemons and we asked the waiter to and he said the same thing. But when it came it had tomatoes and zucchini and a lot of onions. My friend likes onions but hates tomatoes. She was very polite and ate it but I felt so sorry for her. My other friends meal was worse we are all vegetarians so he asked for a bean and rice burrito without meat but it came with beef . We reordered a normal burrito and it didn't have any meat so he happily ate it all. Overall not too bad food and pretty good service. The desserts on the other hand were so delicious we ordered the apple pie and tres leches it was amazing we all loved it. Okay restraunt with amazing dessert.

tempie M.

Yelp
Food is always great at all their locations. I stop here or take out regularly. It clean really good food in a timely manner!

Lisa W.

Yelp
This used to be our go to when it came to Mexican food but have really been disappointed with the service the last few times. The last time we called ahead and specifically requested a certain waiter, confirmed again when arriving and being seated. Then they put us with a different waiter. This other waiter was horrible. It was ridiculous.
