Esse - Review - Nordhavn - Copenhagen - The Infatuation

"There are very few moments in life when you walk into a restaurant knowing you’re about to try something truly unexpected. Not just an unknown flavor or unusual texture, but ingredients you never even imagined, like noodles spun from fish bones, or ice cream made from stale bread. At Esse, nearly every course will surprise you. Your butter will be blended with vegetable scraps, and the chocolate in your cookie will be made from spent grains." - Mary Holland

It feels like time-traveling back to the good old days of AMASS. Fermented potato bread, fish bone noodles, and so many other exciting dishes! The atmosphere and people are wonderful, and the food is absolutely superb. I’ve missed the zero food waste concept in Copenhagen - so thrilled about this reincarnation 🙂

Having missed Matt Orlandos Amass more than a bit, ESSE felt very familiar although having some new twists as well. Situated in an amazing space. Warm and friendly service. Incredible food and an interesting non alcoholic pairing. A complete experience.

We had an amazing dinner at esse, innovative dishes, and incredible service. It was so great to see the Amass team back together. Thanks again for an exceptional evening and we will see you again soon.

Chef Matt Orlando and team is back in Copenhagen with their new restaurant ESSE - the updated version of their former AMASS restaurant, so the famous potato bread and the sustainable approach to sourcing and cooking remains in focus. Located in an old building in Nordhavn - close to the metro station.

Delicious modern Danish cuisine in a Nordic design setting. The best of all was the service. We will definitely come back.

We had 'the' most culinary experience. The chef is a real artist using all elements of different products. Matt, and the rest of the team, thank you for this special evening. Tim & Hélène, Lou and Anna.

Don’t even hesitate, just book a table. So happy that Matt Orlando - and his team - are back. This first (but 100% not last) meal at ESSE made us forget how much we missed AMASS. ESSE adapts wonderful things that we loved about AMASS, but it’s its own thing - in the best possible way - and something everyone who appreciates a perfect combination of food, ambiance and service should experience. The fact that 2/3 of the staff from AMASS rejoined Matt after THREE years says volumes about their passion and love for this adventure, and it shows. They made us a plant-based menu that just soared. BTW the non-alcoholic pairing - their own creations of course - was the best we’ve ever had. No photos from us - we were too immersed to even think about taking out our phones. Our new favourite restaurant.
