Esso is a charming little coffee shop with a cozy atmosphere. It’s perfect for studying or grabbing a quick coffee on the go. The dim lighting inside sets a relaxed vibe and while seating is limited, the covered patio offers a few extra spots to enjoy your drink. The coffee is excellent, well priced, and the service is friendly.

First time here and if I lived closer, would be a regular stop. Barista was new and wonderful. In house brewed delicious americano and best part was that the oat milk was FREE! Cool little spot for chit chat or a good book. Outdoor seating too and a small selection of pastries. Def worth a stop.

Google
It is an ideal place to have a chill date or work/study. The barista was very kind, and provided great recommendations. My coffee was very good, however, they only have desserts, I would have enjoyed a sandwich or something bit more savory.

Tim Bauer

Google
Quiet, unpretentious coffeehouse. Shaded outdoor seating. The 2 baristas were friendly. They had mugs, as I prefer that over paper cups. I sat outside while enjoying a mild, bright, brewed coffee.

Sarah Larson

Google
Small cafe with calm vibes. I got the Thunderbird (Espresso Soda) and the sparkling water brought out the acidity of the espresso in a way that mixed strangely with the mocha

I stopped in on a Saturday morning. This is a cute little coffeehouse. They have indoor and patio seating. The patio is covered with vines and felt nice and cool even though it was already 90 outside. I ordered a cold brew and it was delicious.

Google
Fell in love with this coffee shop, price point is great for the quality of drinks given. I tried the Americano, it is very strong bold flavor with great after taste. But then I also tried the Honey Lavender Latte and I am blown away by the composition of flavor. I have never had something like this. I will be coming back to try the other drinks and teas. You can bring your own mug which it fun. I love the out door seating is shaded and inside has a relaxing vibe. Over all it was a great experience, staff was friendly. Very aroma pleasing inside the coffee house and outside next to the plant.

Google
One of the best coffee spots I have found in all of Phoenix. Great strong coffee, I ordered an expresso and an iced mocha. The iced mocha was one of the best I've had in a while. Not watery and is super strong which I like. Employees our super friendly and it's a great study spot in my opinion. Definitely check it out!

Yelp
We were in desperate need of some caffeine straight off of our flight into Phoenix. We decided to indulge at a local coffee shop. My boyfriend was intrigued by Esso as they roast their beans. The space is quiet and quaint. It felt like the perfect hideaway to read a book, write a paper, or just enjoy some great coffee. We noticed a board with summer specials, so ordered two iced Classic Lattes. It had flavors of white chocolate and coconut but to our surprise, it wasn't too sweet! The barista did a great job crafting a well-balanced drink.

Sara M.

Yelp
I was at a bakery around the building and needed coffee to go with it. Esso is a super cute small spot for a pick me up. The spot was clean and cozy and the employees were super friendly. I went with an oat milk pistachio latte and it was great! Great roast and not bitter or watered down. Would definitely stop in again!

Yelp
Don't you love it when you find that magical little gem of a spot? This cafe @essocoffeehouse located in The Strip on Highland & 12th in Phoenix, right next door to Original Gravity, feels so warm and tasteful, cocooned in a shaded concrete patio that feels protected from the harsh spring and summer heat. I could sit in here and relax everyday. There is art covering the walls by local artist, all for sale. The deep jewel tones and metallics with greenery and comfortable seating of the cafe interior draw me in. Not to mention the absolute show stopper - the antique espresso machine setup. Today I ordered an afternoon latte to go: 12 oz. Hot Oat Flavored Latte with 1/4 sweet Housemade Cardamom Brown Sugar Syrup and Vanilla The barista was so friendly and made suggestions about syrup pairings when I was trying to decide. There's also a restroom inside.

Yelp
I've been to this coffee shop a handful of times and I've enjoyed every visit. The staff is friendly, coffee is delicious and the seating areas are inviting. It was cold this morning and I needed something different and hot.. I ordered the tiramisu latte - dark chocolate, almond syrup with almond milk.. it's like a rich dessert but not overly sweet. The dirty apple cider chai from their seasonal menu is also delicious. They have pan dulce (Mexican pastries) to go with your coffee drink. Plenty of seating areas inside and patio, tables for catching up on work and a couch to lounge. They also host free weekend events (check their website for details). Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

Yelp
First time here, randomly popped in. Cute, small, quaint. Ordered a small mocha latte with almond milk and extra foam. Man, you can really taste the espresso, really nice. It wasn't busy on a later mon am, almost wanted to stay but had things to do. I'll be back, interesting strip mall also. Good job to the owner, nice work!

Molly W.

Yelp
Stopped into Esso to do some work the other morning, and was pleasantly surprised by the hidden shop. I got the lavender latter which has a perfect foam on top. The table was a spacious place to work, with warm lighting. As I left, several other customers were visiting on the outside shaded patio. Looking forward to my next visit!

Rachel L.

Yelp
Had the best matcha latte ever. The barista was super kind. Will be back for my raspberry matcha!

Yelp
I love Esso! I've been a few times and I'm always pleased with the drinks and service and atmosphere. They have a fun specials menu! I've tried a Blackberry Mocha and a Snow Bird Latte off of it and they were both really good! They're definitely worth the stop and will be getting my repeat business.

Jyrki P.

Yelp
Small Esso Coffeehouse & Roastery processes coffee beans and serves talian style espresso - dark, flavorful, and aromatic. Friendly service, and nice, home style decor. The coffee machine is italian, hand pressed one, that makes the difference. This is my favorite corner in Phoenix as of now when craving real coffee.

Felisha M.

Yelp
I love this place. I come here a few times a week and I have never felt the inclination to be a regular ANYWHERE. They have very sweet baristas that the owner lets them be themselves and their personalities shine bright. Raven is a really cool person. All their drinks are great and they offer free refills on drip coffee so a great place to post up and study. Music can be a little overwhelming depending on who's Spotify we are listening to but it's not a problem if I just put my headphones in. They sell local art on the walls and have current event fliers which I can appreciate.

Janai S.

Yelp
I came here because I saw on Yelp that they offer Turmeric Lattes. Hooray! The cafe is very small and clean. The barista was nice and greeted me warmly even though she was in the middle of making drinks for another customer. I got a Turmeric Latte and a Rice Crispy Treat. The latte was only ok, nothing that I would return for. The rice crispy treat was so overly sweet that I ended up tossing it in the trash after only a couple bites. Not sure if I'll return, but if I do, I will probably just stick to drip coffee.

Ann L.

Yelp
Delicious coffee, charming atmosphere, friendly service. Outside seating available. Fresh treats too.

Steven W.

Yelp
I'll keep it short and sweet. I've tried numerous coffee shops in the valley over the years, and I just keep coming back to Esso time and time again. I even had it on the day of my wedding up in Sedona when Layla's sourced their beans from Esso. Always phenomenal, and their baristas are also fantastic Duke of Esso on Yelp (as of 09/22/23) signing off

Michael W.

Yelp
Fantastic place I couldn't dial in my personal espresso machine took it into shop the shop owner took the time to show me how to dial in my machine. I'm going to buy all my coffee from this shop!!!

Sonia X.

Yelp
I absolutely love Essos coffee. The coffee is delicious, I usually get the honey lavender latte. They have music playing quietly in the background, I am able to work or chat with a friend. My only complaint is that it's not closer to my job.

Ryan C.

Yelp
I stopped in on a rainy morning in Phoenix (rare) super excited as I've been wanting to stop here for a while. I was underwhelmed. The seating area is limited, but lots of cool artwork on the walls, and table books to enjoy if you're staying. I tried the bumble bee latte (I think this was the name) and it just didn't hit the spot like I thought it would.

Ruben R.

Yelp
This place has some of the tastiest beans in the valley. Worth the drive if you're not situated nearby.

Gayl B.

Yelp
So yummy! The turmeric latte is a wonderful blend of flavors. There is seating inside and a couple of spots on the outside, totally in the shade making for a relaxing pleasant experience. Their menu is unique, and the place is definitely worth a visit or two!

John B.

Yelp
I love it when I return to a coffee house after a few years absence and find that they still brew the smoothest coffee. They make a selection of speciality coffees and next time I'm going to try the bee pollen latte. This time I ordered a soy latte. The flavor was delightful. There is seating for about 10 people inside and four people in comfortable rocking chairs outside on a covered patio. Parking could be an issue at busy times. Try this place, you won't be disappointed. I highly recommend it.

Elia H.

Yelp
Super nice staff and they have Mexican pan dulce !!! Highly recommend; coffee tastes amazing!

Laura C.

Yelp
September 2021: Yay - driven by here a zillion times & finally made a coffee date to patronize: 1. supercool little space in a supercool architecturally significant building by Bennie Gonzales, circa 1960s 2. local art displayed on walls for sale 3. an epic espresso maker from the 1970s, a work of art in itself 4. Ordered a delightfully cold decaf Americano, heavy on the cream 5. Cookies/pastries & tamales! yes tamales, available from local La Purisima Bakery in Glendale 6. Nice outdoor shaded patio Afterwards, I meandered all around this funky metal and concrete building: lots of random metal sculptures, concrete mushrooms, quotes inscribed in various places, & other fun discoveries. I definitely need to make this my new meeting spot for clients, friends, etc.!

AJ K.

Yelp
First real cappuccino we've had in days. Friendly staff, quick service. Quirky eccentric decor. Would be a nice dark cool cave on a hot day! Try the dirty chai, it's fantastic because it's not sweet.

Marisa M.

Yelp
This is our favorite neighborhood spot to grab coffee. It's right up the street and located in a really cute and somewhat artsy building. The staff are friendly, they make the perfect lattes and they have pan dulce!

Darya S.

Yelp
Adorable coffeehouse with great service! Raven is such a nice guy holding down the fort. He made me an excellent hot oat latte with a dash of honey. I'd love to return to try all of their different latte flavors (like honey lavender). The place is very cute and cozy. It's small, but I found it easy to sit in a corner and do some work. It doesn't get loud, with great wifi and lots of outlets, and the music is quite zen, so it's a solid place to work in solitude.

Ali B.

Yelp
Came here this morning, this cool place is a little tucked away! I liked the art on the walls and little lamps at the tables. This place is small but not very busy, would be a good place to get some work done! I ended up getting an oat milk bee pollen latte. At first I wasn't sure if I liked it but it definitely grew on me. I would like to come back and try more lattes sometime!

Adrianna D.

Yelp
super cute little coffee shop. i stopped by to get some work done and the mood was super relaxing and easy to work in. had the best matcha latte i've had in a long time and the sugar cookie i got was amazing too. the service was a little slow but the baristas seemed like they were having fun and that brightened the mood. i definitely recommend coming here!!

Simon E.

Yelp
Second visit. Same result. I'm sure the coffee is good quality, but I literally couldn't taste anything. First time in a month ago I had a hot Americano; this time I had a black iced americano. Very faint flavor, not much detectable caffeine. We also ordered a chai tea latte and whilst it was well-made, the flavor explosion wasn't there. So I'm stumped. Two shot iced americano maybe? Short pours? I don't know. But it's not for me. I love the ambience, and the staff are friendly. The dog treat / water station is superb and I loved sitting outside relaxing under the green leaf shade.....but if the coffee doesn't hit the spot, I just have no reason to return.

Christabel T.

Yelp
This is a cute coffeehouse that reminds me of the coziness you'd find at a coffee place in the Pacific Northwest. I grew up in coffeeshops with a book in hand, waiting out the rain that was constantly pouring outside. Esso embodies the comfort that I remember. Space: It's a pretty small space and definitely a place that I imagine runs out of seating easily. There are 2-3 tables and a comfy worn-in couch. There are warm lamps on the table that invite you to spend a couple hours reading with a good book. The room doesn't ask you to post on Instagram... and that's a good thing. The unspoken request is to just be. Breathe in the coffee smells and relax. Drinks: My husband and I ordered a cup of the Maple latte and a cup of the drip. I always go with a drip coffee when I want to experience a new store fully. The Maple latte was delicious, sweet (but not TOO sweet!), and really outshone the drip coffee unfortunately. It wasn't the flavour of the drip that lacked, but the temperature of the coffee that turned me off. I'd wished the barista had checked the temperature before handing me my cup. On the plus side, the drip coffee comes with a free refill. I was able to return and get a fresh cup of coffee that was, this time, perfectly toasty. The good: cozy spot, tasty drinks. The bad: inconsistent drip coffee - my first cup was mediocre, but second cup was spot on. We'll be back! It's cute as a date spot, but I can also see myself spending a couple hours here alone.

Ryan A.

Yelp
Amazing coffee and lattes (not just milk with coffee flavor, but is actually strong). Artwork always unique and feature local artists. Staff and owner always very nice. Excellent coffee spot for quick service or to hang out

Melissa C.

Yelp
A delightful, quiet tucked away coffee shop. Perfect for visiting with friends or hanging out.

Nicole B.

Yelp
Good, quality coffee. Small spot, but cozy. Friendly staff. Pastry selections are okay, but definitely recommend trying their speciality drinks.

Claudia V.

Yelp
I stopped by on a whim to catch up on some work and I'm so glad I did! The atmosphere is really chill and earthy. I enjoyed one of the best cold brews ever (added a splash of oat milk and vanilla syrup) next to a bunch of beautiful plants. I got hungry towards closing and, since it was so late in the day, was offered half off the tamal I ordered and was given a free pastry. Good wifi, good food and coffee, and amazing service.

Holli W.

Yelp
This place is a gem! In addition to the great coffee, they have Mexican pastries and tamales - so good! The staff was so friendly and we loved the outdoor seating area (covered, looking over pretty little vines). Great find!

Sophie K.

Yelp
What a lovely place! I needed a place to study for a few hours, searched on Yelp and found this place. And I'm glad I found this place. Has a parking lot in front of the store and outdoor seating area. The interior here is really cozy, usually I'm not a big fan of dim light, but the lighting, interior, table and chairs, all make the place super cozy yet stylish. Love it!! :D I don't drink coffee, so I can't talk about how the coffee tastes here, but I had a cup of tea and the price was 2.5, which I think it's pretty reasonable for 3 hours of using their wifi and stuff :p And the person who works here is super friendly and nice. Sorry I don't know his name and if he's the only person who works there, but he's super friendly and that made me instantly feel comfortable and I could study there about 2 hours without being worried or something. Cool place!

Don C.

Yelp
I dropped my car off at Courtesy Chevrolet to get service. And I was wanting to try a new coffee shop. Preferably local. So I looked on here and saw that Esso was about a 8 minute walk from me. So on my Lord of the Rings (or in this case Lord of the Beans) journey I went for some coffee. I felt like Toucan Sam floating thru the air after some Froot Loops. With each step I took. The fresh smell of coffee got stronger and stronger. I appreciate it even more when I walked past the strip club next to it and the smell of pee was mighty strong (I'm joking). I like how its tucked away in this little corner covered by foliage. The inside is basically a couple seats, a counter, and a bad ass looking coffee machine that looks kind of steam punkish. I can't remember what I had exactly. But it had Lavender in the name. And it was very good. All the flavors melded together extremely well. And each ingredient that was described in the coffee. I could taste it. I'm sorry I didn't get the guys name who made my coffee. But you sir are good and making some coffee. I have to go pick up my car in a few hours. And I'm looking forward to going down there again to try a different drink. Good place to take some friends and just enjoy good company.

Mary S.

Yelp
A hidden gem of a coffee shop! Tucked away in a larger building, Esso is a quiet, relaxing coffeehouse that echos the vibe of a PNW coffee place, which is really hard to find in Phoenix. Always quick service with friendly baristas. If you make coffee at home, be sure to get some of their beans! $6 for a bag that makes coffee for about 2 weeks, which is just enough to get you hooked and buying the larger bags.

Gloria W.

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee shops in Phoenix! The coffee is quality, and the service is great. The coffeehouse itself is well decorated, with a chill, calm environment. The art on the walls and the music contributes to the ambiance, and the lamps on the tables and plentiful outlets make it a perfect place to study or read. Would recommend!

Bruce M.

Yelp
Esso became my coffee HQ on a recent trip to Phoenix. I visited here three times total. It's a great little place. It is well decorated with a nice patio out front. The staff was super nice. I can only speak for their drip coffee, which was excellent. I appreciated the beautiful espresso machine that they had. Overall, my favorite coffee place on two trips to AZ this year.

Luisa H.

Yelp
Ordered a café olé + cortado off-menu after talking with the awesome barista! It's a wonderful (and rare) treat to speak coffee sans Starbucks terminology or sugar-laden specials. However, the treat selection of pan dulces and loose leaf teas were super tempting and I can't wait to visit again~

Jessica C.

Yelp
Coffee is good and their patio is shaded and cozy. It is a hidden gem coffeeshop in a strip mall. They have a few seats inside but I truly enjoy their patio. Nice metal (rocking chair style) seats on the patio, it's shaded and green, nice cozy spot. I always get their bullet coffee which is really good but today I tried the (temporary) Harry Potter themed menu and got an iced butterbeer latte, also yummy. If you're in the area give them a try!

Marcus O.

Yelp
We dropped by to pick up coffee on our way out of town so there wasn't much hanging around and enjoying the place. However, I have to say, this was one of the best cups of straight-up black coffee I've ever had.

Hugh N.

Yelp
I love this place ! First is the coffee's quality. I enjoy a fresh grinder & brewed coffee with hint of personality. I love the cappuccino here. Second, the ambiance is warm and inviting & unpretentious. It's definitely not a large area (especially with the Covid pandemic considering) but it's do-able and offers a decent & safe environment. All the patrons come here are respectful to the business & other customers (social distancing & wear masks) as all the occasions I have been here. Third & also equally important, the owner [Sharon] is the coolest ! She is incredibly friendly, passionate about her coffee, and fun to chat with. I recommend all the Yelpers & their friends to check out this place when you are in the area. I know there many choices for boutique coffee shop, but this one gloats with personality.

Avy S.

Yelp
This place is smaller than you think and can get pretty packed during the day. I got a funny feeling about one of the staff, like they were really stoked on everyone but me, but I bet I'd like them if they treated me that way. Everyone has a reason, right? Really cool vibe here, smells good, unique and even nerdy drinks, easy lighting on the eyes. Good for quiet time. ASD friendly. Edit: Typo. I still recommend the business to everyone even if it was a little weird for me lol.

Kathee C.

Yelp
Cute little shop in Phoenix! I love the chill vibe inside. Lots of cool art. The service was very friendly. They had social distancing down. There is outside seating if wanted.

Siara B.

Yelp
Great beans! I buy they're espresso beans for my own machine at home and they are amazing. The quality is way above other local places like Cartel and Moxie.

Kelly B.

Yelp
What a surprising little gem to discover! I had put this place lower on my list because I didn't have high expectations, but I was wrong! They roast their own coffee and the cappuccino I ordered was very smooth. Their prices and menu are pretty standard for the area.

Daisy R.

Yelp
If you're a person of color DO NOT COME HERE the amount of ugly looks I got from the employee and customers was sad. Also, their coffee is just "ok" but their blueberry pie was mushy and lacked in flavor

Jennifer S.

Yelp
This place is amazing. Friendly cashier/barista. They had some special drinks on the menu for this month and I was lucky to be in the area to try the new drinks out. I ordered a butterbeer latte iced and a love potion iced latte. Both were even better than expected. Seriously delicious and the cashier/barista was extremely helpful, nice, and patient while I chose what to order. Thanks so much! I'm going to try to make it back again before I leave this city.
