Estaño, a Basque-Style Wine Bar, Opens in the Marigny - Eater New Orleans

"Estaño is a Spanish Basque Country-themed pixtos bar recently opened by musician Bruce McDaniel and Arabella Casa Di Pasta restaurant owner Mowgli Pierlas. It offers a range of Spanish-inspired dishes including pan con tomate, truffled egg toast, and a variety of pixtos like anchovies, Spanish tortilla, and croquetas. The restaurant also serves high-quality canned seafood imported from Spain and fresh bread. The full menu will be available next week once the liquor license is obtained. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with plans to extend evening hours soon." - Stephanie Carter

Beyond the unassumingly classic St Claude facade, awaits a cozily modern space. The front of the house has several high tops. The back has a few couches and several more high tops. Both areas have different vibes. The front feels like a great spot to meet some friends for a drink and a bite before starting your evening. The back feels more cozy and invites you to settle in. During the two plus hours I spent reading and lounging on a couch in the back, the menu changed several times. As the owner informed us, they take great ingredients and assemble them into little bites as they see fit. They then enhance and garnish with a loving touch here and there. Overall I think the deliciously simple tapas are a very welcome addition to the neighborhood and I look forward to coming back.

Google
Wandering around on a Sunday and found this place. Cute, different and creative Spanish-inspired menu. Ordered croquetas jamon, truffle egg toast and recommended pintxos. Can’t go wrong for wine and small bites when your on an exploration hunt while in New Orleans.

We stopped by just to get a quick snack. Coffee was amazing and the tapas we got were absolutely incredible. The owner was very passionate about sourcing ingredients from Spain and it shows. Highly recommend!

Excellent food. Has a strong European vibe. The service was also great, very friendly and helpful. Went for brunch, ordered three items, and a coffee. Everything was prepared and presented nicely, top quality.

Google
The food was really good. We got a few of the pinchos, the Spanish tortilla, and the cheesecake. There's a few couches in back to sit at. It isn't huge, but there's enough room for a small group.

Google
Excellent simple Spanish bar/cafe food with an emphasis on Basque specialities. Great place to have wine and snacks. #tapas #pintxos #basque

We had high expectations for this place and it did not disappoint! We absolutely loved the food and drinks. Unique and delicious. Incredible service from the owner.

Yelp
If you like a funky stripped down place that is a bit difficult to spot and has all the ambiance and decoration of a laundromat then this is the place for you. Walked there last week in the heat and humidity. Most folks seemed to be getting their food to go but we ate outside under a canopy in the somewhat disheveled back yard and it was fine as there was a ceiling fan back there. While they bring your food out to you it is up to you to get knives, forks, napkins etc. The hostess was very friendly and informative and the food was first rate. The lone chef was very businesslike in the tiny kitchen but he obviously is very talented. Great value. Will definitely return next time we are in New Orleans. Hopefully by then they would have hired some nearby high school kids to paint murals on the blank walls!

Yelp
The price is not worth it for me. Dan dan noodles were good, but not great. Something was lacking, but maybe because I've been to Taiwan and China. I could taste the over the counter ingredients, so I have doubts that the sauce was house-made. There are few places for authentic Chinese food in NOLA, so I give them credit for opening a spot. Wish it was better.

Yelp
Heard about this place through an acquaintance but every time I try to go, they're closed. I imagine it's not a main business for the owner but even on days when it's open I still call beforehand to learn from the voicemail it's closed. After trying 4 times over a two week period, I just gave up and ended up at Wishing Town, Dian Xin, and China Rose. ‍

Yelp
Super good. The noodles are really special. Obsessed with the Mao Po tofu... but the Pork Wontons took the prize. I wish I had gotten the SzeChuan Lamb noodles instead of the dan dan noodles, slightly different flavor dan dan noodles than I was going for.

Yelp
If you're not getting the shrimp with egg noodles and XO sauce then what are you doing?? Love this place. I haven't dined in since they've move but the takeout is amazing and the staff is friendly.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant in New Orleans. Perfect bao, and the Dan Dan noodles are delicious and Spicy. I eat here every weekend. Also, the music is not too loud and that matters a lot. when we go out to have conversation and eat a meal. This is an "alternative"kind of staff and they are amazing, young, fun. They will try to accommodate your requests. The Burmese tea salad is worth the price of admission and is a light meal itself. Street parking. Nice outdoor patio.

Yelp
This funky little cafe in the Lower Marigny is turning out delicious food in a casual but friendly atmosphere. My wife and I split the titular Bao (steamed then pan fried) and loved them. Big, pillowy dumplings with a biscuit-like breadiness underscored by crispy fried bottom swathe a savory ball of pork sausage to delicious effect. I was eager to try the cumin braised lamb with biang biang noodles and my very high expectations were met if not exceeded. The slow cooked lamb, redolent of spice, unctuous and deeply satisfying flavored the satisfyingly chewy noodles. My wife loved the extremely rich pork belly with rice and despite loving my selection, I had a bit of entree envy. I can't wait to return and try more of their interesting (for New Orleans) menu. One orders at the counter and then awaits the selections but the lack of standard table service in no way diminished the friendliness of the very helpful staff.

Yelp
Little, delicious spot that does, you guessed it, both bao and noodle really well!! The menu is small which always suggests to me that it's stuff that's really been mastered. I was particularly impressed but how! tender! both the meat in the pork belly dish and the beef noodle soup were, but the noodles in that soup were also extraordinary. The bao is two per $6 serving and medium sized.

Yelp
Crappy work ethic. We were so looking forward to eating here. We passed up another place that unfortunately closed earlier than this place, so it's no longer an option. They had no sign in their window to indicate why they chose not to be open today. Very disappointing!!!

Anne B.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. The handmade noodles and fresh Bao are outstanding. Our family also loves the whole steamed fish with greens when it's on special. We've been eating here for years and it never disappoints.

Yelp
I had a great lunch here last month, which is why I'm not giving it a lower rating. Had a really vexing experience tonight. Perhaps it has to do with their move into a new space, so I'm trying to be judicious. But I feel ripped off. I placed a to go order at 8:40 and was told it would be ready in 20 minutes. I arrived exactly at 9 P.M. I was told it would be 10-15 more minutes. It wasn't particularly busy, so I was a little mystified. It was not ready until 9:20. So my order of noodles and two appetizers took 40 minutes. The cause was apparently that they scrapped my noodle dish and started it over, based on a specification I had not made. A miscommunication, it happens. When I arrived home at 9:30, I found that my order was incorrect. I ordered the tea salad, but received broccoli instead. The scallion pancake was inedible. It was dry, brittle, and burnt. Had to throw it out. The noodles were supposed to have vegetables. All they had was a few pieces of kale and some corn kernels. The noodles were OK but not great. The broccoli was cold yet turned out to be the best part of the meal. For $25, this was pretty upsetting. But I previously did have a great lunch at the old location. Hopefully they work out their service/kitchen kinks. The new space is nice.

Yelp
The menu is very Chinese, offering strangely flavored sauces with the numbing quality I like (yes, your mouth tingles and goes a bit numb-paresthesia is the medical term). The atmosphere, conversely, was entirely New Orleans: an open corner cafe on a residential street. The place being called what it is, I ordered some bao and some noodles, and ended up with a couple of buns filled with yellow curry that were tasty without dipping sauce or hot oil but even better with. The vegan noodles carried the numbing sensation along with a complex flavor. Oddly, they've decided not to offer any vegetarian tofu dishes, so the noodles are made with plenty of delicious marinaded peanuts for substance. Thus, their menu is small, but vegetarian/vegan-friendly, but not quite as good as I might have hoped. If they start offering what I can only assume is a legit ma po tofu in a way that I can actually eat it, I may have to revisit the rating. For now though, the place delivered what the sign on the door said. Buns and noodles aren't overly filling, but I was glad to stop in for lunch and to get dessert later, and it was the taste I was looking for.

Yelp
Read so many good reviews so we decided to give it a try. Went there at night. Gave them a call asking about details before heading over and was not informed about the new location. Drove an hour one way and only found out that they moved.... called again and the girl said they moved to a new location. need to update the address folks!! When we got there, they were about the close, so pressed to go instead. The lamb hand pulled noodles ($14 something) was okay.... only a few pieces of the lamb. Not too impressed. The braised pork shank was BAD! It was bitter and tasted like the broth was burned or something. So many pig hairs too. May be we just had bad luck that night. Overall, it's overpriced for both the taste and service. So disappointed. Definitely not going back.

Yelp
I've been here several times now, and I've always enjoyed the food when I'm here. The dishes I've gotten include: Dan Dan noodles, pork sung roll, Strange Peanuts, Ma Po Tofu, and XO Noodles. My favorites of all of these are the Dan Dan Noodles and Peanuts. Ma Po tofu tasted great, but it wasn't as spicy as I'd like it to be. The pork floss roll is great as well, but I'm used to a more traditional take on it (without the cream). I definitely recommend this place if you're looking for an authentic and affordable Chinese place. They are definitely not your typical Chinese cuisine which is what appeals to me most. I always look forward to going back here when I can, and now with the new location, it is even easier for me to visit. The new location on St. Claude is more expansive than the previous one, and their kitchen is more open concept for you to watch them cook (if you sit near it.) Service here has always been great. They are friendly and attentive every time I'm here.

Yelp
What an interesting experience. As a self-proclaimed foodie, I'm ashamed to admit that I had tried neither bao nor freshly made noodles, so naturally when I heard about this place, I simply had to eat there. I ordered the vegan bao and the zha jiang mian with extra vegetables on top. Of the two, my favorite was the bao--a pair of soft steamed dumplings filled with curried mung beans and mock duck. Delicious, and very kind of them to offer a veggie version. The noodles themselves were great--so thick and satisfyingly chewy, yet not at all tough. The sauce, I have to admit, was pretty one-note. It basically just tasted like heavy soy sauce with no sweetness or tanginess--not awful, but could have been better. Price-wise it was about what you'd expect. I paid $15 for my meal before tax/tip. All in all a cool little spot with a breezy, relaxed vibe. I'll probably go back to try the tea eggs and tea leaf salad.

Yelp
We were on a hunt to find some delicious Asian noodles, and we were fortunate enough to have found noodles and Bao! A quick 10-min Uber brought us out of the chaos into a quaint neighborhood where Bao & Noodle is located. Inside is very rustic and the tables are limited, but the food is delicious. We ordered the Fried Steamed Bao - and it was, hands down, the best bao I've had. The bottom was perfectly crisp, and the dough was soft and sweet. The pork filling was seasoned well without being overly salty. My mouth is watering just thinking about it again. I ordered the shrimp with egg noodle for my main dish, and it was ok. It is definitely pungent - maybe a little too shrimpy for me. I tried my friend's Cumin Braised Lamb noodle, and it was delicious - compared to NY's Xi'An. For a 2 man team - one server and one cook - service and delivery was pretty good. We'll be definitely come back when we make our way to Nawlins again!

Yelp
Very very good place in New Orleans, one of the best noodle dishes I've ever had. Amazing braised meat, and overall nice vibes. 10/10 will go again

Yelp
Cozy restaurant. We came on a Wednesday night and there was only 1 waiter working so it was difficult to get her attention. The lamb noodle was delicious but it could be a bigger portion. The bao was my favorite dish of the night. The tea leaf salad was not good- it was just over dressed with vinegar. The Scallion pancake was over cooked but still tasty

Yelp
Best dan dan noodle on the eastern seaboard. This is a family joint, Covid interrupted the move they made from the other location on Royal I think... Fantastic food. small and very idiosyncratic. Outdoor seating and a few seats in back as well as a nice table or two in front. One waitress, one cook.

Yelp
Not too crowded during weekday dinner times. I saw people bring in wine so I guess they're ok with BYOB? Cumin Braised Lamb Noodles: This was super yummy, I had a few bites of it. The sauce was very rich and a bit spicy. The noodles are definitely not your typical noodles, but amazing -- they are freshly made, soft and chewy. The lamb was very tender and well-seasoned. I'd get this next time! Dan Dan Noodle with Pork: I really liked the housemade wheat noodles, which really dense and chewy. However, the dish itself was just way too oily for me, and I wasn't a fan of the flavor since it just tasted like noodles with chili oil. I think it would've been better if there were veggies or something in it to make it feel a little lighter. I couldn't finish it so I took it home, and it tasted better the next day for some reason. Scallion Bun with Pork Floss: I was expecting the typical white steamed bao bun, but I guess that's just the buns on the menu that explicitly say "steamed." This was more like a soft roll filled with pork floss, then coated with a mayo sauce and more pork floss. They are pretty big and filling! Good appetizer. They have daily specials, so be sure to check the chalkboard out front before going in! Otherwise the super nice lady taking your order will let you know. Overall, pretty decent Chinese food at good prices. Service was very friendly, and the restaurant itself is very cute and quaint. Plenty of parking in the neighborhoods too!

Yelp
I enjoyed this little noodle spot quite a bit! We ordered the tea soaked eggs, pork bao, and shrimp noodles. Unfortunately I took a bite of the salty end of the tea egg first, and the rest of the meal was totally ruined as I was reeling from salt overdose. The bao was delicious, to be sure, and the noodles seemed great, but I think I really have to come back another time. The service was very friendly, the ambiance casual, and it came out quite speedily. There is some outdoor seating, and it seemed to be ok with BYOB, as someone else in the restaurant came and went with their own bottle of wine. Definitely a cute spot for a first date, and also seemed good for takeout, judging by the number of people who did so while we were there.

Yelp
We ate dumplings of the day. (Shrimp and pork) And the fried steam baos - both amazing! Since we were doing a food and bevy crawl, we didn't order anything else. Slow service but not unfriendly. I get it's a small place and everything is made to order- so it was not a big deal for us. Just a heads up to not go here if you're in a hurry. We will definitely go back when we visit Nola again!
google avatar

Yelp
This is one of the best places in New Orleans! Everything we had was delicious. The scallion pancakes, fried steam bao, tofu, dan dan noodle, E V E R Y T H I N G. It was so good. Service was prompt, and I can't wait to come back her *came to visit friends in Nola, and the first thing we wanted to do was to come here and grub. It was everything that I had been wanting & more! Love love love this place.

Yelp
It was pretty good (the lamb noodles), but the portion that I got (one medium-sized bowl of noodles that was not very filling) for $14 was not worth it in my mind. If I am really in a pinch and I am craving some noodles, I would probably come back to Bao & Noodle. Until then, I plan to keep my eyes peeled for other places to try.

Yelp
K and I LOVED Bao & Noodle. We had dinner here a few weeks ago and loved everything we ordered. We thought of the place this Monday and were both devastated that we could not eat here because the business is closed on Mondays. We ordered the fried steamed bao (which was probably my favorite thing), dumplings of the day (pork and shrimp), cumin braised lamb with noodles, and the tea smoked duck. OK, just kidding about the bao being my favorite. Maybe it was the duck. I don't even know. Everything was super delicious and we wished that we had more room in our tummies so that we could try more things. Maybe I can talk him into going here for dinner tonight... :)

Yelp
I've been meaning to go to Bao & Noodle for years now and just finally went last night. I'm a sucker for restaurants in the Marigny so they already had that going for them. It's a super casual inside and you can see into the little kitchen where the chefs are going at it, which was fun. My friend and I grabbed menus and set wherever we wanted and then were treated by a sweet woman who gave us the run down the menu (I'm almost positive she was the only server so I was very impressed with how well she kept up with us). We ordered almost everything on the appetizer portion of the menu because we had to try everything. We got the vegan Bao, fried Bao, peanuts, tea leaf salad, scallion pancake, the vegetable of the day (cauliflower) and the wonton special. My friend and I LOVED the baos - you can tell they're homemade. They were unbelievably fluffy with a hint of sweetness. The scallion pancakes were also great! The peanuts were tasty but we definitely didn't need to get them with everything else we got - they tasted like honey peanuts. The tea leaf salad I feel like I could've left. The vegetable was a cauliflower with red bean paste that I found tasty but didn't love as much as I thought I would. The star of the show was absolutely the wontons and the sauce it came with. I will crave those wontons for years to come - seriously the best wonton I've ever eaten in my entire life. For our entree we got the Spicy Chicken Noodle Soup and the Dan Dan noodles. I found the soup kind of bland which was super disappointing. I would definitely not recommend it unless you were in the mood for something simple and hot to eat when you're feeling sick. The Dan Dan noodles I thought tasted great- similar flavor profile to the cauliflower. Overall our experience was great and we loved that all the noodles and Bao were homemade. Will definitely be going back to try different entree options!
google avatar

Yelp
Now been three times and, outside of a service issue once, we've been pretty impressed. Fried steamed bao is a must-order every time we visit - nothing like it in the city. Pork wonton special is also a top-tier app. Favorite entree is the dan dan noodles - think noodles are key and the spice is just right. Also enjoy the lamb and pork dishes, but the later is sort of an awkward eating experience with all the fat. Ordered the beef soup once, but, unfortunately, after waiting an hour for our order, I had to leave before it came to the table. Pretty decent reheated the next day.

Yelp
I have to say I've never been compelled to write a negative review for a business, but my first experience here was appallingly bad. My friend, who highly recommended this spot & has been here many times, and I went for lunch on Saturday. I almost walked out 20 minutes in after the waitress refused to acknowledge us. There were two other tables that she checked on multiple times but she didn't even bother to say hello or I'll be with you in a moment - absolutely nothing. 25 minutes in we are eventually served water and placed our order - two entrees & two coffees. 15 minutes later the waitress was "busy" talking to the couple next to us. Which was encouraging because we could see that she seemed friendly and helpful.... to some patrons. She excused herself from them, mentioning out loud that she needed to go grab our coffee. 10 minutes later, & over 45 minutes into our experience, we still had not received anything. My friend goes in to politely inquire and was told the coffee was cold and they had no mugs to serve us. Look - no coffee - no big deal. The failure here was to communicate/inform us of the issue/ offer us something else for the ridiculous wait. We were very patient and did not complain. Finally almost an hour in - our waitress comes out with our food on a tray. She proceeds to stop at the table next to us AGAIN and ask them if they needed anything and chat while holding our food in her hand. I honestly couldn't believe it. I felt completely ignored. As she serves us she chimes that she's brewing a pot of coffee for us.... I no longer want coffee and am beyond frustrated at this point. The food was disappointing. Looked amazing but fell flat in taste and was quite bland. Waitress never stops by again but offers the couple next to us complimentary peanuts and more conversation. We get no apology for the wait or acknowledgement in any capacity. I did not finish my food. We leave - honestly feeling insulted by the whole experience. Walking through the now empty restaurant almost all the tables are still full of dirty dishes. The waitress is by the entry looking at her phone. She turns her back on us as we walk out and doesn't bother to speak. I've been in the service industry and sales for many years - it almost hurts me to write this review. But this was beyond unacceptable... and frankly I'm still upset about it. I will never go back.

Yelp
Delicious noodles! My husband and I shared the pork floss bun, the fried steamed bao, the strange peanuts, the dan dan noodles and the spicy noodles. The appetizers were good. The noodles were amazing! We will be back.

Yelp
This place. This. Place. THIS PLACE...is on the list of restaurants I wanna put in my pocket and bring back with me to Sonoma County. If I did/could, there would be parades. I'd have a statue in a park someplace. It is therefore also on the list of places I am legit depressed to live thousands of miles away from, in the rarified and varied (down and dirty to divine) company of Katz's Deli in NYC, Yamachan for those damn chicken wings in Japan, Dishoom in London, and Ard Bia in Galway. Pictured: scallion buns w/pork floss and perfect tea eggs with greens and rice under there somewhere. I ate here two days ago with my friend and we had the tea leaves salad and braised beef soup and the lamb and I had to come back on my own and STILL ate enough for two. Did I mention they've been playing Pixies the whole time I've been here, too? Man. THIS. PLACE.

Yelp
I love the decor in this spot. It's so cute from when Estano renovated it originally. They have cute intimate 2-seaters with lots of light and openish kitchen. I arrived very late so I only ordered the two bao options (vegan and pork). The bao bun is awesome. The vegan was yummy enough. I felt the pork didnt have sufficient spice or enough of the stuffing. The curry was pretty bland. I was able to cure it by dipping it into the accompanying sauce. I definitely wouldn't order them again anytime soon. But that is primarily because the menu presented other tasty alternatives. I also do want to commend the staff. The staff was super pleasant especially given my late arrival. I loved the menu although it is pretty heavy on spicier items. I lived that they have specials in addition to the standard offerings. I will definitely give them the opportunity to earn some more stars.

Yelp
Great food. Dank. Go now! Only issue is lack of hood system, my coughing and my clothes and pores are clogged. Food is pretty great and interesting! Where did they learn to cook this? I'm untested in learning more!

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place. I love hand pulled noodles. Traveling from Boston, I searched to see if any hand pulled noodle shops were around after an amazing meal at Dian Xin. We found Bao & Noodle through Yelp. I saw they recently moved to a new location and decided to have our last lunch there since it was further from the French Quarter. Unfortunately, we did not make it before their cutoff and ended up at St Roch Market. We decided to come back for dinner. We were greeted and allowed to sit anywhere. I remember from a previous review about the ventilation so I sat as close to the door as possible. The restaurant was pretty empty. The waitress let us know the specials (also written on the board near the register) and gave us a few minutes to decide. There were a mix of high tops and low table seating. Each one had a vase of flowers, chili oil, soy sauce and a box of chopsticks. She came back twice until we decided on what we wanted. The menu is slightly limited but we wanted to look up some items. We decided on the hand pulled lamb noodles and shrimp noodle w/ XO sauce. The waitress did her job, but I would recommend working on her service skills as she didn't give a very welcoming vibe. I don't remember her checking up on us as well once the food came. It took awhile for our meal to arrive though. There wasn't much of an atmosphere here. Decor was very basic and had some asian flare. The lighting was very dim in the front entrance room. You couldn't hear the music over the open kitchen. I love seeing the chefs do their job, but I cannot stress enough about having a good ventilation system going in a kitchen with steam and hot spices going. As the kitchen was getting busy, the smoke started to fill the restaurant. My fiancé had to step out a few times cause it was hurting his eyes. When we left, all we smelled like was oil and fumes. Maybe try leaving the door open? Finally our food arrived and we were already disappointed. For the prices we paid, we expected a bigger dish. These seemed like lunch sizes in the bowls. Being noodle lovers, we had them all over and by far, this was the smallest servings we have had for $10+ noodle bowls. The taste was mixed. The XO shrimp was on the saltier side, but resembled more of a lo mein. The shrimp amount and size was good. The hand pulled noodle looked amazing, but the soup fell flat on flavor. I enjoyed the abundance of lamb pieces and they were all tender. The noodles on the other hand were hard to finish. I had to stop using my chopsticks to grab two forks to eat these. It was way too big. I love hand pulled noodles. We've had them in NYC, SF, and Boston. They were overwhelmingly large and inconsistent in thickness. Some parts were thin and others were dense/chewy. I only ate half of my small bowl, which is rare in my book.

Liz K.

Yelp
I ordered the fried steam buns and the daily special pork and leek dumplings. Both were house made and the flavors were quite good. However, the skin texture of the buns and dumplings were lumpy. Which left parts of the dumplings undercooked. I also ordered Dan Dan noodles with Pork. Again, decent flavor, but needs work. The house made hand pulled noodles were lumpy, dense and chewy. Chewy because it's really hard. Dense because the dough was over kneaded.

Yelp
This was my first time trying authentic Chinese food and omg I loveeeeeed it!!!!! My boyfriend and I got the curry bao, fried steamed bao, beef noodle soup, and biang biang noodles with lamb. The noodle dishes are very hearty and filling. It's not something I could eat often due to the high sodium but it's definitely a good comfort food after a long, hard day. I wish the baos had more filling but they were good nonetheless and tasted homemade. We'll definitely be back to try the duck and fish soon!

Yelp
This was the best meal we had in New Orleans. We came here after reading a write up about them, and it was absolutely the most flavorful, memorable meal I've had in a LONG time. I had the cumin braised lamb and he had the steamed pompano. The atmosphere was hip and laid back. It took about 35 minutes to get our order but after the wait I would honestly be ok with and 1.5 hour wait for this. Everything is made by hand. GO HERE.

Cute little place we stumbled upon on our walk about. Got Asian flavor inspired crawfish, these were pretty good & a nice change of pace from the classic, but overall not life changing. That being said, the bao's are dank. The noodles are pretty dank. And the atmosphere is adorable!! Really enjoyed the service :)

Yelp
I love this place! Everything on the menu is yummy. They have the best hand pulled noodles and the steamed bao is bomb. Hope they are able to return to regular hours soon.

Yelp
If I could give 0 star I would. The food is DELISH, but the service is some of the worst I've ever had in New Orleans. As a prior service industry professional (8 years of bartending, 10 years of serving), it's rare for me to feel truly upset with a dining experience, after all, everyone has bad days. This review spans two separate experiences at Bao & Noodle, both sadly, left me resigned to not patronize them further. The first - My ladies night attendees and I ordered online (through Yelp I believe). Our order was confirmed via e-mail and charged on my friend's card. The food never came. No phone calls, no updates, nothing. When we called B & N to get a delivery update, they said they 1) had no record of our order, 2) did not use Yelp at all for online orders, 3) would not be making out *already ordered* meal because they were closed. They gave her exactly ZERO support in getting a refund and refused to speak with Yelp (who was either falsely representing them and taking money from patrons without delivering goods or they lied). My friend had to contact both her bank and Yelp on multiple occasions (5 that I know of) to be refunded for a meal she never had. Absurd. The second - Being a woman with wonderful friends, a girlfriend from Baton Rouge ordered (via phone this time) for B & O to deliver dinner to my home. I waited 45 minutes...nothing. 1 hour....nothing. 1.5 hours...nothing. 2 hours later (and a bottle of wine down) my girlfriend called to see if I'd enjoyed my meal. She was horrified and upset that her well-intended gesture had been essentially ruined. She got on the phone with them (again all the way from BR) and they said they had "lost" the order. They expedited the order after hearing from my friend, but it really ruined the experience. Ridiculous. Y'allllllllllllllllll. I'm patient as hell with service. Everyone has tough days, long days, etc. But this is beyond the pale and it's a pattern. It's a damn shame, because this place is so tasty. Principles over taste buds. :(

Yelp
Delicious, flavorful, affordable and the best service in town thanks to BATMAN! My favorite dishes are: Dumpling of the Day, Veg of the Day( Shishito pepper and/or Squash ), Dan Dan Noodle, Cumin Braised Lamb Noodle, Spicy Chicken Noodle Soup, Fried Steamed Bao. In that order. Other favorites: Tea Eggs, Slow Cooked Pork Shank, Strange Flavor Peanuts. Yum.

Yelp
This review is unfortunately going to be about the damage a simple misunderstanding can cause. First I will start off by saying that the food was excellent. The steamed buns, Crawfish and cabbage were top notch. Our server was very sweet. After we finished I said to my counterpart, "this is our new spot"...... but then things changed. See, when we walked in, there were only two other people dinning in and I made a joke about if they could "fit us in". This joke was actually aimed at us since we called prior to see if they had room. Apparently the chef didn't know this little detail. Apparently the chef took offense. When we were leaving we thanked everyone as we walked out and the chef screamed back "yea glad we could FIT YOU IN!", to which I was like ok weird but no big deal. But then as we walked to the car we walked past the kitchen, which the door was open, and heard them talking "s" about us and the joke I made. They didn't seem to care that we could hear them ragging on us. This sucked since we really enjoyed our dinner there. I hope they read this and know I wasn't making a joke about their empty restaurant. To be honest, I love a quiet empty restaurant. So this is just a warning about how a little misunderstanding can totally flip an experience upside down. The food was great though.

Yelp
I am a Beijinger, now studied at Tulane and be in U.S. for several months. It is good and homelike to have Zhajiang mian tasted similar to what I have in beijing. The food is freshly made, which I found it valuable because most of the American Chinese restaurants here do not provide fresh and handmade "cooked wheaten food". In other words, most of the Bao(buns) and noodels provided elsewhere are probably frozen food or finished products. However, it is common sense that food will lose much nutrition and natural flavour in this way. Highly recommend this restaurant as this is pretty "Chinese" based on three dishes my friend and I ordered. Even though there indeed is not very much authentic, still scarce to have it in New Orleans. Have not gotten a chance to talk with Chef about how he learned all these, probably next time!

Yelp
Bao and noodle is great traditional Chinese fare that is superior to any Chinese food i have ever had. Also this family works so hard to maintain a superior flavor and interesting taste notes to anything on the menu. I have perused many a restaurant in this city, and this cuisine is above and beyond the norm. doug and family! Kudos to you and congrats in your recent move.!

Yelp
It's one of those nights where I'm sick and don't want to move. I found Bao & Noodle on the UberEATS app and decided to give it a try. For some reason the app had many of their dishes marked as unavailable even though it was 5:30 on a Saturday night. I ordered the spicy chicken soup, fried steamed bao, and the cumin braised lamb. The soup was good, but there was hardly any broth (it was about 80% noodles, 10% greens, 5% chicken and 5% broth). I would have been okay with this but the noodles were slightly mushy (I'm inclined to blame that on the fact that I had it delivered and not straight from the kitchen). The cumin braised lamb had good flavor and the fresh noodles were delicious but it was very salty. The fried steamed bao dish was perfect. Light and fluffy with delicious filling and a great dipping sauce. I probably won't order delivery from them again, but I hope to eat there in person to see how the food compares straight from the kitchen.

Yelp
Maybe it's just me, maybe not. I've been waiting 40 mins for my food. I don't want to rate this place low or anything but I really would like to know, how do they receive such high ratings?! Yes the servers are friendly, but that does NOT overthrow the wait time. Honestly, I want to leave right as we speak but I'm sure the food will be ready soon. trust and believe, I will not be back.

Yelp
This restaurant is a hidden gem! It was difficult to decide what to eat. We got the fried steamed bun. It is stuffed with pork and chives. An order comes with two and it was hard to not order more than that. We had to pace ourselves because we ordered the shrimp and egg noodles XO. The noodles are house made. The shrimp was cleaned, deshelled, and meaty. The flavor is pungent and not spicy. Great dish! The duck is smoked and tastes like ham! It was crispy and moist, unlike any duck I had ever eaten. The cucumbers and radishes hadna soy sauce vinegar dressing and it came with a side bowl of rice. We also ordered the slow stewed pork shank. It was juicy and tasted like how my Chinese Gramma made it. You may be surprised to find all all white wait staff and white chef. The flavors were authentic because the chef was taught by his father in law from mainland China. As someone from California, I definitely approve of this restaurant as very much a mainland Chinese variety. You will not find the Americanized Chinese food you might find at a PF Chang's or a Panda Express. If you are looking for a bomb ass restaurant, come here! They have specials too on the board in front. Stop and take a look at it before you get seated.

Yelp
The wife wasn't feeling well so I ordered take out from this restaurant. When I arrived to pick up the order the bag which contained my order was tied up so I couldn't inspect the food. When I I began to ask if each of the items I ordered was in the bag, the waitress replied that my order is scallion pancakes was not in the bag and that it was overlooked. She apologized and had the rest of my order made but luckily I asked otherwise I would have gone without. The food was delicious. Just cold by the time I got to it.

Yelp
Some of the best noodles I've ever had. The lamb was deliciously tender. The whole dish was spot on. Don't forget to try to the dumplings!

Yelp
The food here is mediocre at best and trying very hard to seem authentic. The Dan Dan Noodles was barely what I would classify as spicy and the noodles were undercooked and chewy. The beef noodle soup was better but I felt was still lacking in flavor compared to similar beef noodle soups from other establishments. The noodles were hand pulled but also undercooked and extremely chewy. The fried bao bun was probably the best tasting but the filling was sparse. You can definitely get more authentic and tasty buns elsewhere in this city. The oolong tea was on point.
