Boston’s Best Irish Bars | Eater Boston

"This cozy Jamaica Plain pub has one of the best beer selections in the city. Head here for platters of fish and chips, wings and tenders with every dipping flavor one could want, piping hot shepherd’s pie, and wash it all down with a pint of Guinness." - Terrence Doyle

Shuttered Eugene O’Neill’s Irish Pub to Reopen in Jamaica Plain - Eater Boston

"Eugene O’Neill’s, which closed in 2017, is looking to reopen at the same address under the management of its former manager Melissa Hunt. The pub has petitioned for a common victualler license and an entertainment license to host live music. Despite some community concerns about noise, the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council supports the reopening." - Terrence Doyle

Great little Irish pub! Highly recommend the boneless buffalo tenders!

Google
Really nice local bar! I initially came in to charge my phone for a bit, but everyone was so friendly I stayed much longer than expected. The chicken parm pizza is super good and well worth the price. Special thanks to Emily! She was very nice!

Google
Great bar, great atmosphere and service and not too expensive. Also right across the street from Forest Hills so easy access to the MBTA.

Google
We’ve been here a few times and it has always been awesome! The food and beverages are fairly priced and delicious, the atmosphere is cozy, and we’ve had friendly service. And as weird as I feel saying this about an Irish pub…their chicken parm is some of the best I’ve ever had, and we were extremely impressed with the bruschetta during our last visit. Check this place out the next time you’re in Jamaica Plain, I’m sure you’ll love it!

**Eugene O'Neill's: A Hidden Gem by Forest Hills MBTA** Across the street from the Forest Hills MBTA bus station, Eugene O'Neill's exudes charm and warmth from the moment you step in. My recent lunch experience there was nothing short of delightful. From the get-go, the service at Eugene O'Neill's was exceptional. Attentive and friendly staff made us feel welcome, setting the tone for a pleasant meal ahead. My friend and I opted for classics: a BLT with avocado and a Reuben, both served with steak fries. The sandwiches were a revelation. The BLT, adorned with avocado, offered a refreshing twist on a beloved classic. Meanwhile, the Reuben boasted the perfect balance of flavors and textures, leaving us craving more with every bite. Accompanied by golden, crispy steak fries, each component of our meal was executed flawlessly. What truly stood out, beyond the delicious food, was the ambiance. Eugene O'Neill's possesses an inviting atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for a casual lunch or a relaxed evening with friends. The cozy interior and welcoming vibe added an extra layer of enjoyment to our dining experience. Overall, Eugene O'Neill's surpassed expectations in every aspect. From the impeccable service to the mouthwatering fare, it's evident why this establishment is a local favorite. As for me, I'll eagerly be back for more culinary delights and memorable moments at Eugene O'Neill's. Highly recommended.

Accommodated our large walk-in party for graduation celebrations! The staff was friendly and fun. We even went back again several days later! Highly recommend this J.P. neighborhood's O'Neill's, for atmosphere, good bar food and fond memories.

Friendly staff, great variety at the bar, nice atmosphere & decor, four large screens playing sports and other popular TV channels, great food, open late

Trivia night was mid. The host held the mic too close the entire night so you couldn't understand her. My girlfriend (who is hearing impaired) walked up to ask her to repeat a question, her response was "well I already said it twice". (Tuesday). Service was slow, bartender would make eye contact only to ignore me. My girlfriend found something in her drink. (Picture added) Bartender couldn't be bothered to get off his phone for half the night (also added) I usually love this place to wait on a bus but I HIGHLY advise against at this point. If you see this guy, walk away.

Yelp
Attended a wedding reception there yesterday. It was absolutely fantastic. Delicious food, great service...would definitely recommend it as a venue for private functions.

Yelp
What else is more perfect on a rainy than going into an Irish pub and pretending that you're a million miles away? Eugene O'Neill's is NOT that precious, piped in Irish Rovers (don't get me wrong....I love a good unicorn tale) music, with a smattering of apostrophe'd food selection names on the O'Menu. This is a solid, finely vetted menu with amazingly good food, even better Bloody Mary's, and staff who are lovely. And I use that word intentionally. Fish and chips were light, fries AMAZING (simple and crunchy and with malt vinegar? Kooky delicious). The buffalo tenders were on the small side-which I prefer- not too spicy and cooked perfectly. The house salad super fresh and it deducted any calories from the tenders, obviously. The Reuben was grilled, and I mean GRILLED! Look at it! My husband is a borderline reuben snob and he breathed it in. He ordered sweet potato fries, but it accidentally came out w regular. Because the fries are so delicious as is, it was no problem. But then the plate of sweet potato fries appeared and they were glorious. Ridged, fried crisp and perfectly. Just lovely people at EO's. We were there on a Friday at 12:30pm, very quiet, dark wood (I mean, Irish pub) and cozy. I saw a flyer for a monthly book club that happens, and other neat events, as well. Def check out this wonderful place....I promise that you'll feel as if you've been there a thousand times before!

Yelp
Eugene O'Neill's is a small, but good pub. They have decent service, good food, and a full liquor bar with plenty of beer offerings. They also will put the sound on the TVs for Boston-area sports games. I would definitely come back here again.

Jeff W.

Yelp
Great beer selection, great ambiance, great place to watch a game. I had the Cajun Chicken Tacos and they were spectacular-- seems like they have great bar food all around.

Yelp
As a former regular of this bar (the only reason I am no longer is because I moved across the country for a new job) - I want to state: I love this bar. I love its bartenders, wait staff and I love its regulars. I had moved to Boston during the pandemic for a job, and this was one of the local bars that made me feel right at home. The bartenders are very kind, even if a little rough around the edges - which I personally love. It really adds to the eclectic atmosphere of the whole bar and even the neighborhood. JP is a mix of old blood and new families and I think the whole thing bleeds in well. I have also on numerous occasions had bartenders ensure if I felt unsafe, they were there to assist. This can be said of some of the old timer regulars too. JC is also an AMAZING chef. He has brought me some things that have blown my mind. The burgers are definitely not something to pass up! Also the country chicken sandwich and the huevos rancheros for brunch! Don't miss out on EOs, and be kind and patient to each other! We are all coming out of a life changing pandemic and are working out the bumps! I have never met a bar that would let someone completely take over for their going away party AND for the bartender to make specialty cocktails for said going away. If you put the work in, EO will be the bar you always head to after a rough day .

Yelp
Came here on a Tuesday night for trivia night, which starts at 7. Trivia was fun, but service for food was quite confused. We had to ask for water twice before we got it, and by 8 we were still waiting for our food. I ordered the Cesar salad with shrimp, it was good but nothing to write home about. My boyfriend got the steak tips with mashed potatoes and carrots. The mashed potatoes were great, the carrots were undercooked. The steak tips came with a blue cheese sauce which was not advertised, which I really did not like and did not go with the onions. My other friends enjoyed their food. Overall, it was fine food but overpriced, especially for the poor service.

Yelp
This was a weekend family lunch. We had a great meal, in a nearly empty restaurant, arriving right at opening, We had excellent service with tasty food at a fair price.

Yelp
Great food, friendly service, Celtics and Bruins playoffs on the TVs. I was happy they reopened after so long, and I finally made it in. Chicken Tenders were really delicious, and the fried pickles were fantastic.

Samantha T.

Yelp
The first time we came out waiter was super nice and even gave us a beer on the house since the one we wanted was no longer in season, but was still on the menu. Second time my bf, brother and I were just passing by there and my brother wanted the beer from last time since it was good. My brother went to the restroom and my bf and I weren't getting anything. First waiter came up and gave a sarcastic ok when i told them we weren't getting anything only my brother and second waiter gave a sarcastic sigh and went over my bf to grab the menus. We were just like ok ._. We liked it but I'm not sure now.

Yelp
I love this place, but man, they gotta work on their music. drinks and bartenders are great, but there's only so much Van Halen, journey, Fleetwood Mac etc you can put up with. I mean please.

Yelp
Trivia on Tuesdays is a fun time. A great casual place with great food. The menu has just the right amount of variety. And friendly staff!
google avatar

Yelp
I've come here almost every Tuesday night for the past few months with my husband and some friends for their weekly trivia night. The food and drinks are great, especially the fried pickles! It's often loud and crowded but it's great fun.

Alexander H.

Yelp
This place just opened, and the food, drinks, and service are a perfect addition to the area.

Yelp
I was just told that unless I take my Yelp review down, I am barred for life. I stand by my review. The manager has a temper and is unhinged and the regular bartender is extremely rude. I know of at least five people personally who don't feel comfortable there and do not patronize the bar regularly because of this atmosphere. Apparently, ownership was notified and they back the manager. I have never been so disrespected at a restaurant/bar in my entire life. Proudly barred for life.

Yelp
Came in here on Halloween night to get some drinks before going Downtown/North End... VERY lowkey establishment. The bartender was soooo sweet! He was quite the jokester, he scared one of my friends with a giant spider coming down form the ceiling, hilarious if you ask me! Drinks are decently priced, large space, and dark ambiance. I want to give them another chance, grab a drink and some bar food in the near future since I live close by.

Yelp
Overall, unimpressed with the food. Came here with a friend for a weekday dinner. I was first surprised to learn that they didn't have any drink specials or happy hour type deals (apparently happy hours aren't as prevalent in the area than in the south, according to the waitress). I ordered a Citizen cider, which was slightly sweet and very tasty. For my entree I ordered the Tex Mex veggie burger. The veggie burger was made from sweet potato and black beans and itself wasn't too bad; maybe a little dry but good flavor. The burger was supposed to be topped with guacamole and a corn salsa, both which were served in skimpy portions; the salsa was just a pico de gallo and had no corn in it. The bun was nothing special and frankly was a little greasy. The fries that came with it were pretty bland. I had to add salt and still was unimpressed with the taste.

Yelp
I have been here several times since the opening. The food is great, the beer selection is up to my standards-and if you like Shipyard Pumpkinhead, and who doesn't?, they have the best caramel rim in all the land. If you get one, you will never be happy with any other rim, ever. The Irish bartender, John I think, is so nice, efficient, and personable...unlike his younger snooty ginger counterpart! She ruins this place! I had to wait 20 mins for her to order my food after begging for a drink. It was dead in there. She was just very busy...chatting with the server. The next time I went in there, she played favorites at the bar...I, apparently, wasn't one of her favorites! She is rude, inattentive, and needs to reign in the power trip a bit. In short, this place is the perfect addition to Forest Hills, but I'll need to find out when the redhead isn't working before I consider going back.

Yelp
Eugene O'Neill's is an Irish pub right at Forest Hills. I went here a lot when I lived a block away and always enjoyed my time. The downside is that the service is slow and the prices are high for what you get. The upside is its location, food, and decor. I love the exposed brick and Boston feel. It's casual but it can also be great for a date night. Favorites from the menu: - Nachos (to share-- huge portion and amazing) - California burger - Sweet potato fries

Yelp
Cute place really liked the vibe off the bat walking in. Was pretty busy since it's 20 mins before trivia starts but we found a spot next to the bar and right next to the server station/POS computer. Got drinks quickly but no prices on the menu usually means overpriced drinks even for Boston (and we ended up being right on that). Waitress seemed nice enough we needed a few more minutes to decide on food. We waited nearly 30 mins for her to come back. We waited so long The bartender came and picked up our empty beer glasses (but didn't ask if we wanted a refill...you know like bartenders do). So we sat there for a little bit with empty glasses, then with no drinks, and menus stacked waiting for service. Mind you the server walked by avoiding eye contact about 15x. We finally got to order and the food was good. But had to get up and get our own utensils and plates and napkins. Waitress lacked serious attention to detail on customer service. I could understand if we were a table in the back but we were the table right next to her and she walked by 50+ x but never asked how stuff was. She also picked up and gave us a completed empty bottle off ketchup after bringing us our food. Like you can feel it's empty so fill it?! Got popcorn chicken as an app; Popcorn chicken was listed as "tossed in" whatever sauce you want but it was not. We got popcorn chicken with sauce on the side. Still pretty good. Overpriced bolognese and very small portion for the $17 price, but tasted ok. My bf got fish sandwich and said it was pretty good for $13. Overall 2 stars for the food being okay but with so many choices in Boston I wouldn't go back because the service was terrible.
google avatar

Margaret C.

Yelp
5 stars as a pub, 2 or 3 stars for food, so settling on 4 overall! Great drinks (good beer selection, excellent Guinness pour, nice cocktails) and I like the vibe. I wish there were either no tvs, or fewer, or that at least a couple were turned off when the bar wasn't busy...but otherwise it's a big yet cozy space. Food is edible but over-priced for what it is, and execution is mediocre. They just started doing brunch and I get there's growing pains, but an item that included "apple | sage" in its description was literally referred to--LITERALLY, Yelpers--sliced raw Granny Smith apple with dried sage crumbled on top. My poached eggs were cooked hard, apparently their default, which---no. My friend's $17 steak tips included 3 whole steak tips. Anyway, awesome place to drink, and if you absolutely must grab a bite while doing so, they can accommodate that. Service at the bar was first rate.

Yelp
Stopped in with b. late last Saturday night - still freshly toasted after baking under the sun in the INSANE lines at the food truck festival in Somerville earlier in the day - and found exactly what we were looking for: A chill, relaxed environment in which to imbibe liquid refreshments of the alcoholic nature. Ding! Very friendly service - the bartender* kindly chased off a couple of creepy men who came sauntering up to the open windows to ask us for 50 cents. Great music - we liked every song that played. And for someone who's still coming around to the taste of beer, I really enjoyed what was recommended to me by our waitress: Kona Big Wave - light and mild without that icky bitter aftertaste. The food - we got the mussels and nachos (which was more like a five-person app) to share - was eh. Despite this, we definitely see ourselves parked here on a late summer evening to come. *EDIT (7.21.2014): Went back recently and sat at the bar this time - the bartender's name is Bernie and he is super friendly and awesome! Go say hi!

Yelp
Eugene O'Neill's is part of the Napper Tandy family of Irish pubs (Millis, Norwood, Roslindale, Walpole). I was pleasantly surprised with the food at Eugene O'Neill's; the food definitely exceeded my expectations. The portions were large and everything tasted fresh and was moderately priced. I ordered the "homemade" onion rings as a starter and everyone at the table was amazed at how good there were. The onion rings were so good that I crumpled some up and sprinkle them over my steak & goat cheese salad. I really enjoyed my salad as well; the salad was very large and came with a good amount of flavorful steak tips. I tried some of the Fish & Chips which were topnotch. I just wish the steak & cheese eggrolls were still available. I was not as impressed with Eugene O'Neill's beer menu as some of the other Yelp reviewers seem to be, although I thought the beer menu was decent. The service was good despite the fact that there was one bartender responsible for the entire room. The bartender was nice enough and she helped me hone in on a beer (Baxter) that I would like. I am glad Eugene O'Neill's was not busy as I am sure managing both the drinks and food of patrons would have been difficult for one bartender. The atmosphere and ambience is what is to be expected from a dark, dank, dingy, unpretentious Irish Pub. At first the open windows were annoying with all the street noise coming in from the buses driving to and from the Forest Hills T-stop (which is directly across from Eugene O'Neill's) although after a while I stopped noticing the outside noise.

Yelp
Q for U: What has two hands, lives in Jamaica Plain and likes to drink beer? A for U: Me Q for U: What has a door, a bar, tables & chairs, beer & pub food? A for U: Eugene O'neill's Eugene O'neill's, it's a bar. It's in Jamaica Plain near Forest Hills. Actually, quite literally spitting distance from Forest Hills. It has all sorts of potential to become a regular local haunt, and by the very fact that it is a drinking establishment, has already assembled a rag-tag cast of regular characters. How would I know that without being a regular, you ask? And Good Sir or Madam, I say to you, I have a sixth sense for barflys. You know what else I have a sixth sense for? Places that seem like they will probably become a regular watering hole on my local watering hole rotation that aren't quite there yet. There's just something that hasn't clicked for me yet at Eugene's. It might be the sort of 'out of the box, Boston Irish pub, throw some stuff on the walls make it look old-timey, still has the new bar smell' thing. I dunno. Q for U: What has a few dollars in it's pocket and an itchin' for a good dank beer? A for U: Me Q for U: What has an alcoholic beverage in a glass that is not exactly there waiting for me but that I might go and enjoy anyway? A for U: Eugene O'neill's

Yelp
Whoa. I was warned... But these eyes can't believe ALL this EXPOSED brick is off the chain. It's an instant hyper classic . This exposed brick might as well be solid gold. It's that good. Bra.

Yelp
Ambiance is perfect for a pub, nice large wood bar along the wall, distressed wooden floors, old school lighting, and interesting but NOT obnoxious wall mountings. Music was great also, and I came on a week night so they had jeopardy on but still played good tunes during commercials! Service was GREAT! Friendly bartenders who know their tap selection quite well and offer an eclectic variety of mixed drinks, although I did not partake. Drinks! Had a few beers, the selection was solid but not adventurous. Main stream craft beer selections, lots of local choices, but nothing off the beaten path. Food. Had the pulled pork Nachos, delicious and huge, about $13 and well worth it. Overall they offered a classic selection of pub food, but with a few interesting twists. Overall, I'd come back again and try out some mixed drinks and menu options. Give this place a chance and it will become a solid choice for your neighborhood pub.
google avatar

Mk E.

Yelp
The missing apostrophe aside, Eugene O'Neills [sic] has a lot to offer. Good beer selection with plenty of seasonal taps, tasty food (including fried pickles--huzah!), and very friendly bartenders who clearly know beer and don't mind chatting. My experience with the food has been a little uneven--the pizza I ate on my first visit was fantastic, but my burger the next time was on the messy side (including avocado chunks that would never stay still on a burger/sandwich) and more medium rare than medium.

Yelp
I've been here a couple times now with some friends that live in the area and I'm a fan. One day we went for lunch and sat at one of the high-top tables next to the large open windows- It was a gorgeous day and a great experience - the bartender/waiter was really attentive & friendly. I had their fried fish sandwich with tartar sauce and fries, which did not disappoint. Second time around we went for dinner - We actually ordered the food to go this time, but sat at the bar and had beers while we waited. The bartender was awesome & the atmosphere in here is great - It's cozy, and classy (for a pub). Love how many craft beers they have to choose from - it's a great place to try something new. Food was delicious that night too - I ordered a salad with steak tips on it (they were cooked perfectly). I'm sure I'll be back.
google avatar

Sara M.

Yelp
A friend and I dropped in for a drink before dinner and had a great time. The server was attentive and let us try a sample of one of the draft beers before ordering a full pint. They also had some very interesting cocktails and canned ciders. Worth a visit!
google avatar

Kurt M.

Yelp
Eugene O'Neill's has one of the better veggie burgers in the city and great french fries. The fried pickles are also delicious and highly recommended. I admit I haven't tried the menu much beyond that. The beer list isn't bad, though, and they generally have a wide selection of alcohol. The servers have always been really nice and attentive, too. While I like the location and the brick walls and the ability to have the windows open in the summer, I wish there were more things related to O'Neill, though. Some posters or photographs would be appropriate. It would be neat if it was more of an homage to him. Maybe have all the servers dress up like him or have his ghost haunt the basement or SOMETHING to make it feel tied a little more to the great playwright.
google avatar

Ashley L.

Yelp
Descent beer selection great staff and delicious food. I tried Eugene O'neils ball tonight and I throughly enjoyed them. I slowly liked the tart sauce from the ball and then sucked it into my mouth which was filled with a savoy explosion of flavor. Hehehe. The potato cheese and bacon balls are to die for don't hesitate to try them they are delicious. THE BALLS!!!!
google avatar

Zachary K.

Yelp
The chili wasn't really chili, but a beef shepards pie, which for beef shepard pie still wasn't that tasty. I love the atmosphere, and will definitely return though
google avatar

Yelp
This is a nice pub with a limited food menu and an extensive beer selection. Atmosphere is comfortable B+ I only had the pickle appetizer which was awesome. A Beer selection is terrific. They pour a very parsimonious whiskey A / C- Service A Overall the experience suggests this place is worth a visit.

Yelp
A cozy and unpretentious pub, across the street from Forest Hills Station -- it has gradually become my favorite neighborhood bar. Casual and low-key without being gritty, fun friendly service that isn't obnoxious about trying to be fun and friendly, great beer selection, and delicious food for decent prices. There's a whole lot to love and really nothing to criticize. Also: Great vegetarian burger options. EO's will let you get any of their (delicious) burger options with a veggie patty. Also also: I'm usually here during after-work hours, but today I just tried their brunch, recently added on the weekends. Amazing food. I want to go back and try every other item on the brunch menu!

Yelp
I stopped here for a pint after work last week. I stayed for two. Good company. Great service. Games and friendly strangers.
google avatar

Reeti S.

Yelp
Have been a few times for after work drinks since it's one of the closest bars to us. It's always pretty empty which is great for us. I love the fried pickles and it's great to try a new beer from their selection. They always have a new selection written on their chalkboard.

Yelp
Not a place for people in their early and mid 20s. I recently moved down the street and last night brought a friend from out of state to try out O'Neill's. We were extremely disturbed when the bartender tried to take away my friend's license, claiming that it was fake, and refused to serve us. We have no idea why her ID did not scan, but the bartender would not accept any other form of identification or allow us to explain our situation. My friend has never had an issue with her ID in the past, and we would have been happy to work out the issue, but the bartender was unapologetically dismissive. Unfortunately, this place appears not to welcome women in their 20s.
google avatar

Kim C.

Yelp
Awesome food (shout out to the cooks chefing it up) and awesome vibes. It's a bit on the small side, but is a pub so that's to be expected. That said, they have plenty of TV screens if you're into watching games. Definitely recommend it!
google avatar

Margaret L.

Yelp
Love this place. I usually have a martini (yes, they have Hendricks) but their beer list is fantastic. Food is above-par bar food. If you're super foodie, you might not be impressed. If you're accustomed to eating bar slop, you'll be impressed. The waitstaff is great - chill but on top of things. Trivia night is great if you're into that sort of thing. Mostly, I love that it's in walking distance to my house and that it has made Dogwood step up its game.

Yelp
Went here last saturday night 9/22/2012 and had the sicilian pizza and a few beers with a friend and it did not dissapoint.. The pizza was delicious cheesy and the olive oil made it more tasty ..Will return when in the area

Yelp
Visited on a Friday night at about 6:00. Plenty of room for our party of 6 to be seated at a table when we arrived. When we left at around 7:30 the tables were all full. This places reminds me of the Porter Cafe in West Roxbury (except it's larger), with a little bit of the Dogwood mixed in. Kind of dark and homey with exposed brick walls. The menu is more casual than the Porter (not many entrees and lots of pizza and burgers.) The apps we had were very good, especially the onion rings, which were home-made with large juicy onions. The nachos were large, but needed more toppings. (When will places realize that you can't pile the chips "way high" and cover them with cheese without having all the chips in the middle be naked?) The pizza was good but not fantastic. They have a good selection of different pizzas or you can design your own. The service was friendly and efficient. They have about 8 beers on tap and just an OK wine selection. My wife had a watermelon cocktail that she said was delicious. The crowd was very much neighborhood families. We brought 2 kids and the table behind us had several kids as well. The people sitting at the bar were mainly young couples. The music was a bit too loud when we arrived, but faded into the background as the night wore on. They have several large TVs (one in each corner) that fight for your attention, even though the sound was off and it was just re-runs of golf. This place is a good addition to the neighborhood and one that I hope to visit again very soon.

Yelp
* Update: The beer list really, really rocks now with a mix of local and craft beers. Music got better too!! 5 stars. Great local little pub. Ok, I've checked this place out a bunch of times considering it's in my backyard. Basically, it's frickin' awesome...though I have some reservations. 1. Seriously excited about another addition to this part of JP!!! 2. Wonderful service! Everyone is friendly and inviting. Good after work destination. 3. Very comfortable. Red brick. Soccer games too! BIG, big plus there. 3. Great fries! No joke. Hand cut. Very quality. Real good fried fish. 4. Dapper burger I think? Avocado, bacon, cheddar. Awesome! Great flavor. 5. (Beer list. Ehhhh. Okay. I really would like more variety, but I like my beer. They could arguably do a lot more here.) 6. Turkey burger: almost too salty to be edible. In fact, I don't think I even finished. 7. Sadly, all the other food I've tried seems too sweet: the pizza sauce, the chili on the nachos. I think there's sugar or something?? I wish they would change this. 8. (The music, real boring. Play some local stuff or have more of a Bukowski or Deep Ellum feel. I'll suck it up though.) So, all in all. Very, very good. I am excited. (Also, good bye Tonic you fucking pricks. They were rude to people who didn't nicely fit their target clientele and they deserve their belly up in my opinion.)

Yelp
Good local spot... Enjoy the $.50 wings on football days. Would have been 5 stars if not for the HORRIBLE COUNTRY and WESTERN MUSIC!!! Get a damn jukebox or shoot the DJ...

Yelp
My new favorite place! Walked in and got a table on a Friday night ~ 7ish. Moderately crowded but a few open tables. I thought the beer selection was great with the standard domestic choices supplemented by local microbrews and the OUTSTANDING Shipyard Seasonal rimmed in caramel - pure heaven. The menu was sufficiently varied pizza, apps, burgers, interesting salads, pasta and reasonable prices. Had a fabulous fish sandwich with a great portion size. Liked the coleslaw too. My only complaint is the ceiling heater seemed to be blowing right on us, so I was on and off with my sweater. I was o.k. with the music selection, but it got real loud as the evening wore on. Why must a patron leave with a sore throat from shouting? Finally, I was a little surprised the place cleared out so early, but perhaps it's more of an afterwork/family crowd which is fine with me. As long as I can walk in and get a table - this place will be on the top of my list - surpassing some of the more upscale, overpriced chi-chi wanna be local spots. Give me a cozy, brick-walled pub with reasonably priced food, beer and wine and I'm sold.

Yelp
I subscribe to the Publick House's philosophy: eat good food, drink better beer (though I do tend to eat great food). Eugene O'Neill's is great addition to the scene at Forest Hills. they have a better beer list than my local favorite, Dogwoods. They have good food, too, and friendly service. And they just passed my test: last week, I sat down and watched as my friendly waitress stared at the taps along the bar and read them off in order, stopping to remember a few. I made a suggestion: print out your beer list. This week, I sat down and had a list of beers not only on paper, but also on the wall. I am angling for this place to thrive. The comments below about loud (country) music are no longer true. Nice vibe, brick walls, candles, and for those weeknights when I have to crank out one last document, this pub has free wifi to send it off to the team. Coffice denizens take note: it is a pub where one could work. Looking forward to this place developing a similar community to Dogwoods, and really appreciate having a rotating list of good craft brew on draft and on tap (I count 20 taps).

Yelp
Went into Eugene O'Neills last night for a beer and although I wasn't completely impressed I think this place has lots of great potential. The good: * The interior design is great! I am a sucker for exposed brick walls * The bar tender was really nice and attentive. * Cocktail list looks like they offer some delicious drinks The so so: * Beer list just okay. I much prefer the beer selections at the Gate or Behan. * The food (full disclosure I didn't eat) as to be expected is pub fare with a decent selection of burgers, pizza, etc. I would have preferred 1 or 2 lighter options.

Yelp
The food isn't that great, but it doesn't ever get too crowded and it's a super convenient location.

Yelp
Pretty decent beer selection for the area (only canary Square has better). Pretty good food. Very nice atmosphere. It's really a great place to hang out (especially in the summer when the windows are open and you can have some great Forest Hills people watching in front of you). My suggestion, do the Forest Hills bar crawl. Start with a beer and some music at Dogwood, saunter down to JJ Foley's for a $2 Pabst and some amazing drunk shows, and then end the night at Eugene O'Neill's for a couple hours. It really makes for an entertaining evening.

Yelp
I am so happy this bar is in Forest Hills- The atmosphere is wonderful- a full on Irish bar, with a very nice attentative staff. The "ginger" another poster was disparaging is actually the manager - so yeah she's "chatting it up" with the staff- hello? She actually my favorite one- friendly, but not too too friendly if you know what I mean. She has made me and my boyfriend feel very welcome every time we go, remembers our beers and we really don't go in there that often. The beer selection is very good. I find that the food is very good too- simple menu but very fresh ingedients. They have a Trivia nite on Saundays and Tues. which is I guess, fun for those who go for that- but can be kinda annoying if you are not there for it. All in all- just a nice, relaxed, sorta unexpectedly nice bar across from Forest Hills t-stop.

Yelp
I hope the food gets better because I reallllyyyyy want to like this place. I almost ordered the steak tips but I noticed someone at the bar ordered them and it looked like they were sawing through wood. So, I ordered the turkey burger. It was great but the fries were really soggy and gross. I went with a group of people, everyone had gross sad limp fries. I didnt say anything because I dont think the cook knows how to make fries. The beer menu is fab but they dont have much to offer in regards to traditional Irish alcohol. Our server was friendly and quick with our orders. I'll go back...but, with Dogwood around the corner, I hope they improve their food.
