The 15 Best Restaurants In Birmingham, Alabama - Birmingham - The Infatuation

"The owner of Eugene’s is a Nashville native who grew up eating Prince’s—the place that invented hot chicken—so this Birmingham chicken shop has some pedigree. The original location in Uptown is only big enough to fit a few tables and a longer communal table, so takeout is usually the best option. But what Eugene’s lacks in space, it more than makes up for with seriously standout tenders. The seasoning on the mild packs a sweet, spicy punch, and easily registers as “hot” at most other joints. Throw in an order of the fried pickled okra, creamy mac and cheese, and a bottle of Eugene’s housemade Pink Passion juice to take the sting off some of the heat. The chicken’s made to order, so depending on the day, expect a bit of a wait for your tendies." - jackie gutierrez jones 2

Best Meals Food & Wine Editors Ate in February

"The quest for fried chicken sandwich glory, specifically ones with some kick, is a saturated battlefield. While there is a range of spice levels at Eugene’s Hot Chicken, the sandwich isn't just piquant for piquancy's sake. Two massive tenders are fried to crackling perfection and one bite reveals white meat that is so moist it glistens. What sets this sandwich off is that the layers of spice, smokiness, and acidity don't sit atop the chicken's exterior. Those layers also penetrate the inside of the tenders with gusto. A little coleslaw, pickles, and a fluffy potato bun combine the whole thing for a massive bite. No one looks cute eating it, but everyone looks fantastic enjoying it. Bonus points if you get it with the fried pickled okra as a side!" - Alexandra Domrongchai

30 Essential Restaurants to Know in Birmingham, Alabama

"Uptown hot chicken spot Eugene’s started as a food truck slinging Nashville-style chicken to the people. There’s a wide selection of chicken at multiple tolerance levels — wings, popcorn chicken, birds, tenders, sandwiches, and chicken and waffles — but Eugene’s also offers regional favorites like pork chops and po’ boys. There’s a second location and food truck in Hoover as well." - Sarra Sedghi

The Best Fried Chicken in America | Eater

"A Birmingham favorite for platters of hot chicken offered in four escalating heat levels (mild to “stupid hot”), using a slightly sweet, cayenne-forward spice blend that’s drizzled with oil over wings, tenders, or pieces; the ideal order is a dark-meat quarter seasoned to the mid-high heat level and served with collards and fried pickled okra for balance." - Eater Staff

Google
The chicken tenders and okra were delicious! I had the Hot Damn seasoning on my tenders, and it was the perfect amount of heat. The seasoning tastes more than just cayenne pepper like other establishments. The okra was cooked to perfection. Highly recommend the food. The place is small and a little crowded during lunchtime, but there is extra outdoor seating.

Google
The food is cooked to order so there is a bit of a wait but very much worth it ! Nice staff, great atmosphere. Food was delicious and seasoned well. The pickles were top quality. Definitely will be back.

Google
By far, the best chicken I've ever ate. The cornbread and slaw were also amazing. I can't wait to go back.

Google
I really enjoyed my visit. I ordered the 1/2 chicken, lemon pepper with blue cheese sauce. And an Arnold Palmer and banana pudding. Sides macn cheese and potatoes with gravy. I wanted corn bread and greens. The cornbread was not available 😔 But my food was hot, fresh, and proportion good. The restaurant was clean, smelled delicious. The staff was pleasant and courteous. I always have a great experience here. The cashier did forget to give me a cup for my tea though.

My first time at Eugene’s and they didn’t disappoint. The food was great and the service excellent. You’re able to sit in inside the restaurant or outside on the patio area. We chose the patio area on this beautiful Thursday day. I had the two-piece dark(hot)/waffle with collard greens and french fries with a side of Alabama white sauce for dipping and it was so good. My daughter had the chicken tenders and fries. The chicken is well seasoned. And my husband got the two-piece (hot)with collard greens and fries!!! Hot was not too hot, but just enough spice. Everything was great. We will definitely be back💕💕

Google
We stopped in for a quick bite. I'm definitely a fan of hot chicken and Eugene's did not disappoint. Had a quarter dark combo and the food came out super hot and in decent time for a busy as they were. Cozy but fun atmosphere with a small section of outside seating. I ordered mine hot and it was good had nice heat definitely have to get the damn hot next time. My wife got the southern style and the flavor was good. I highly recommend checking them out. To me they are a good competition for Hattie B's in Nashville.

Google
Great lunch location and seems like it’s not a bad spot for a meet up with friends after work. I stopped by while out on my lunch hour walk and I’m glad that I did. The service was great and fast. The food was fresh and did not disappoint my taste buds. It’ s definitely on my list to frequent when I’m in the area.

If you’re hesitant about coming here, just go, the food here is amazing! Generous portions, the breading and seasoning is to die for. I will definitely be coming back again. I ordered the half chicken, heat level hot, collard greens, and Mac n cheese. The heat level was a perfect blend of heat and flavor. The crispiness of the chicken was amazing and the meat was flowing with juices. Also the sweet tea was just right, not too sweet. I’ll be trying the catfish next!

Yelp
GO GET YOU ONE! This is not a regular chicken sandwich! I'm a pilot and always try to find the best local food on my overnights. This place ranks up there. Not your commercial or gimmicky chicken spot. Not just heat on a bird but real FLAVOR & SEASONING! I came here on 12/12 by recommendation and I got the sandwich with mild and lemon pepper seasoning and a side of greens. The greens were amazing but the Sammy is definitely something to come into town for. The crunch is top tier, best flavor on a chicken sandwich I've ever had! I took it to go and ate it back at my hotel room. I watch my calorie intact but when I was done I immediately got them on the phone to get the same order before they closed. I'll admit I was a bit hungry, but I've never done that before. My credit card company even sent me a message to ask did I make the second purchase. Yep that'd be my fat a$$ ‍ The service is super friendly... Don't miss out on this gem!

Yelp
Overall 8.425 for food! The chicken was amazing. Only reason 4 stars because forgot some items that were paid for on the first go around. Had to go ask. Had I forgotten no one would have noticed. Ginger ale was out. Not sign saying that the drink was not out. Overall music also was amazing and dining in was so fun! You have to come here!!

Yelp
Stop putting people on hold and never coming back to the call. Fix the services that support your restaurant so you can order the flavor of chicken you want. I have repeatedly asked and told someone about this but they never try to address it after six months. I love the flavor of their food but I will not be returning. I would rather spend my money at a business that responds to their returning customers however I will not be returning!

Yelp
Good God, where do I start?? Thank you lil baby Jesus for this establishment. Thank you lil baby Jesus for the owners who created the recipes for this establishment. Thank you lil baby Jesus for the kitchen staff that cook this incredible, unforgettable food. Surf and turf: 3 full wings (not wing portions) and huge catfish filet fried and seasoned to perfection. Really, nothing else is needed, simply heavenly. Their mashed potatoes and gravy are mind blowing. Their collard greens are just the best anywhere hands down. Their chicken and waffles - juicy, crispy, amazingly seasoned, plump chicken thighs paired with perfect airy waffles and warm crack syrup. How can you not love that? Everyone should try this fried chicken and fish heaven at least once in their lifetime.

Yelp
Looked for some hot chicken spots and this was the number one spot that came up! Here was our experience AMBIANCE: Parking: Street parking and plaza parking. Some are free (limited hours), some you do pay. Seating: Inside and outside seating. Room for maybe 40 people, best for small groups. Vibes: You're in the heart of the Alabama City Walk so the location is great if you're looking for a sense of community and culture. The spot itself is pleasant. It feels very community based with flyers supporting other local events. They're huge Crimson Tide so enjoy a great place to enjoy the game and eat. Overall good for a food adventure and a well-round experience of Alabama. FOOD: Chicken Wings (Lemon Pepper & Hot) (Recommend) The presentation of the wings was excellent. Every piece of the chicken was well battered and seasoned. The lemon pepper had a subtly tart and savory flavor that was just a little salty. The hot sauce (level 3) was perfect - not too weak and not too overwhelming though you will need to hydrate every now and then. Deviled Eggs (Recommend) Not many hot chicken places in California offer deviled eggs so I'm glad to have this Dirty South experience. The spread was subtle and had a nice pickled/mayo flavor to it. Great to mix it with your chicken sauces! House Lemonade (Recommend) If you're tired of the usual sweet tea. Enjoy this kick of a mix with Lemonade, pineapple, and mixed berries! CUSTOMER SERVICE: We met Zebbie, the Manager and he was great! Chill person, friendly and hardworking! Those rushes came and went but the team maintained composure. TL; DR OVERALL: 5 Stars. Great selections, good prices, and deeeeeelicious food! Being new to Alabama, this was a wonderful impression of the food scene here. I definitely will be back the next time I visit. Congrats to Zebbie and the rest of his team. #SupportBlackOwnedBusinesses TIPS: * Unsure, ask to mix and match chicken flavors and spices. Beware of the spice levels! * Be sure to try their other sauces! * https://www.al.com/life/2023/07/birminghams-best-fried-chicken-our-top-5.html

Yelp
Chicken and as really big to much crust for my taste and very greasy. Service was ok.

Yelp
10/10. No words just go. Maybe best friend chicken I've had??? The popcorn chicken is similar to boneless wings but soooo much better. We called the food in and it was prompt and ready in 10! Not a ton of dining space inside, a casual spot, but can def still eat there.

Yelp
Mom and I enjoyed the Catfish sandwich combination. The cashier was very courteous and understanding of our first visit to Eugene's Hot Chicken located in Hoover, Alabama.

Yelp
Just as good or better than the more famous Nashville/hot chicken places. Having tried all the big hot chicken places I was surprised to learn about Eugene's right in Birmingham. It's a nice traditional quick service sit down place. They have a cooler with beer and their signature lemonade which I highly suggest. I got the hot chicken and it had a good balance of spicy and some sweet notes. The fries were insanely good, Crispy and salty. The staff were all friendly and helpful. I would likely try the extra hot but for most people hot is perfect.

Yelp
Food was LIT. Chicken is off the chain and sides were blessed by the Lord. Get you some!
google avatar

Emily L.

Yelp
First, let me say, the staff and other customers were friendly and happy to offer suggestions. They didn't lie when they said we'd love it. The chicken was amazing! Eugene's white sauce was great and the waffle was too! Do yourself a favor and go! The atmosphere is happy and welcoming.

Yelp
We came here hungry after shooting at the range and Eugene's did not disappoint! The service was quick and the food was fresh and tasty. We got the chicken tender sandwich in mild and one in medium, and one in southern, and then the traditional chicken wings in mild. All the food was delicious! I couldn't give them 5 stars because they messed up one of our chicken tender sandwiches and gave us a grilled chicken sandwich instead. We also had to park in the nearby lot which cost $25! I also wish they had an easier way to get the napkins versus a big roll which makes it very difficult to get after you've short-sightedly decided to chow down from hunger and excitement but now need an extra napkin besides the one on your lap! Lol. So, tip, find better parking, get your napkins ripped off the roll and ready before you start eating, and make sure they have your order correct at the register. Overall, we would go back with the above in mind and we highly recommend!!

Yelp
This food was fresh cooked to order. Service was great. Sides are seasoned and homemade.

Yelp
Constant service interruptions. I placed an order over Uber eats but the store closed early due to inclement weather. A refund found not be issued nor could the order be cancelled. The next day around the same time I called to make sure the people I spoke with on Thursday were there but I was out on hold for 13 mins. So I called again as I walked back to the establishment. Spoke to a different gentleman who worked with me and made my meal fresh. Fresh is an exaggeration they don't make oh until You pay for it.

Yelp
Love Eugene's stupid hot chicken and that yummy piece of white bread underneath that soaks u the spices and chicken crunch. I like that their chicken is tender , perfectly spiced and not those giant, overly- sized tenders that I am suspicious of that others cook. The spicy corn if in season is very very good as is their potato salad, which will cool you down a bit if you like the stupid hot chicken like I do. Tried the catfish and it was good too, but I am just more of a chicken girl. Need to try the pork chops which are fairly new on the menu. Eugene's always delivers!! Wish I could track the food truck!!
google avatar

Niki W.

Yelp
My girlfriend apologized after the first bite as she selected this restaurant to eat after a dance competition. We were not impressed.... AT ALL. My husband and girlfriend got the catfish and I got the pork chop the sandwich (which was open faced on one slice of white bread) and we all got a couple of wings on the side. Seems the grease hadn't been changed as everything tasted as it had been cooked in the same old grease. Very heavy! Was definitely hoping for some good old fashion fried chicken and fish but that was not the case. We would not return. The customer service was good. On another note! The UFO White was a winner!
google avatar

Kenesha S.

Yelp
OMGOODNESS!!!!!! The food is AAAAMMMAAAAZZZIIINNNGGG! I enjoyed everything and I can't complain about NOTHING. Well maybe one thing, you can't be in a rush for the food...it is cooked when you order. The catfish is great...the deviled eggs were great! I really don't eat anyone's collards but my mom's. Please don't tell her but they were good. I will definitely be back and let me not forget about the huge strawberry cake...somebody's grandma made that.

Yelp
Fried Chicken Tender Sandwich with Hot (touch of burn) sauce, no pickle, no coleslaw, add lettuce and tomato with a ranch sauce served with fried whole pickled okra. Delicious comfort food at a reasonable price that is served fast and with friendly service. Location at the Galleria 3230 Galleria Circle #100 Birmingham, AL 35244 (205) 593-4695

Yelp
I was in Birmingham for a Basketball Tournament....I saw one of my Instagram followers post that they must have Eugene's while they were there, so I decided to check them out! It was the BEST food decision that I made! The restaurant was very nice. Each table was supplied with condiments & paper towels. Everything was setup so nicely. The customer service was AMAZING! The food was cooked thoroughly & was brought out to my table in no time (Fresh & Hot) I had the Lemon Pepper flavored Leg Quarter, Sautéed Corn (the BEST that I've ever tasted), Fries, & Banana Pudding (My Goodness) This GEM is a definite must if you're ever In Birmingham AL!

Yelp
I want to give 3.5 stars but not 4. Strips & wings were done well. Spice levels were as advertised. Sides - meh. Nothing to really recommend or reject though fried pickled okra was definitely different. People were friendly & helpful. Bathrooms & patio were very clean. Lobby needed a touchup but it was just past lunch rush so I can forgive that.
google avatar

Yelp
Very popular spot in the City Walk area. There's one vegetarian sandwich: pimento cheese. It was not available. There are lots of sides so I decided to make a veggie plate. When I ordered the fried okra, an employee who obey overheard me ordering warned me that is cooked in the chicken grease. I really appreciate his awareness and honesty. Mac n cheese and corn made the vegetarian list. It was delicious.

Yelp
You guys- when I tell you it was the best fried chicken I've ever had, I really mean it! I'm from AZ and my kids love canes (typical) and we tried Dave's hot chicken which just opened out there but Eugene's blows both of those out of the water! We showed up an hour before they closed on a Saturday and they were out of a lot of items (which means people be eating ) we both ordered the dark half qtr meal & got two sides. Fried okra (thin batter & crispy) which was great, coleslaw was decent. I like mine a little more vinegar type but this was typical southern coleslaw. The employee recommended Alabama white sauce with the chicken. That sauce was made in-house and the BOMB. It did seem like maybe they were lacking a bit of organization with the orders but that's the only thing negative I'd say about this place. The manager working was friendly and working in the back with everyone ...& was very responsive to us. Don't sleep on Eugene's!
google avatar

Angela D.

Yelp
Dined at Eugene's with my mother and two daughters on our annual girls road trip. We loved it! The staff was very friendly. Three of us enjoyed hot chicken (I recommend hot damn, though my mother and eldest daughter would tell you mild all the way). My daughters waffles were warm and soft. My side of Mac and cheese was delicious and my moms corn was as well. My youngest daughter had grilled cheese, which she did not like as the cheese was not really melted. She gave her fries a 10/10 though. There was a pretty long wait for our food to arrive, but we all agreed it was worth it. We sat outside and enjoyed the lovely summer air.! Eugene's is worth a stop!

Yelp
Amazing place in Birmingham. Stumbled upon it and was craving some hot chicken and boy did they deliver. Everything was cooked order and super fresh and hot. The spice was on point and loved everything house made. The collard greens were some of the best I've ever had and I got the quarter chicken which was cooked perfectly. Highly recommended, but be prepared to wait in line and for the food. Also, as a bonus, I met the owner who happen to come in and he was super cool and chatted with us for a little bit.

Jason B.

Yelp
amazing food. Vegan friendly. food came out quick and was exactly what we wanted!! If you're in B-ham, this is a must stop.

Hannah C.

Yelp
Ordered a sandwich from the food truck. Asked for ranch. They were out, so I asked for white sauce, they were out. Got my sandwich and it was literally just chicken on the bun. No slaw. No pickles. So, I paid $15 for 2 chicken fingers, a bun, and some fries.

Yelp
Food was good, service was good, appearance was great location could be better because of parking

Yelp
Fantastic chicken and fried catfish! We got medium heat on both and the spice and flavor were there. Quick service and good prices for the quality of food! Will definitely make this a stop on my new weekly lunch spot rotations!

Yelp
IM SO CLUCKY YOU ARE HERE! Eugene's Hot Chicken has been on my list for I cannot tell you how long. Every time we are in the Uptown area of Birmingham we see the signage for it. But are always heading somewhere else. Today started off as a lazy day. Slept in, breakfast at home, etc. But we knew we wanted to do some exploring of the down town. The original plan was to go to Lady E's Fried Chicken, but when we got there the door was locked and it was dark inside. I am not sure if they closed their doors or not, but we were disappointed. Instead of going home we decided fried chicken was still what we were craving. The other fried chicken place we have had on our list for some time now was Eugene's so that was our go to for the afternoon. It was only a short walk from where we were. When we got here there was a good amount of people sitting outside and a whole bunch inside too. The inside was very small, and it was very hot. The ordering process was easy. We both ordered the chicken tenders and waffles, the meal came with a drink from the soda fountain and I was so happy to see that they had Boyland sodas. It is not every day you see these sodas. They are made with real cane sugar and have some of the best flavors for soda on the market. We sat outside the restaurant and waited what felt like 15-25 minutes to receive our food. What I had over heard the employees saying was there was a HUGE catering order on this specific day in the morning. After that went out they had to handle lunch and were a bit discombobulated. After a long wait we were served. We actually were given someone else's meal before our chicken and waffles came out. The kitchen could not take it back so we were blessed with four meals for the price of two. I'm not complaining one bit about this, however I do feel badly for the peoples food we were given as they probably had to wait even longer amount of time. First bite and I was in heaven. Fluffy, thick waffle with sticky, and sweet syrup along side thicc and juicy tenders. They were mild spice level, as I am a p*say when it comes to spicy foods. But these tenders were delicious. One thing that Birmingham is not shy on having is hole in the wall, family owned fried chicken restaurants. I would like to say that Eugene's is tied with Gus' fried chicken for us. Both are superb black owned fried chicken restaurants. Even though we were disappointed that Lady E's was closed, we still turned this into a good day. Coming to this gem was on our list and we are so happy we were finally able to try it. Delicious food, friendly staff and overall experience was top notch. Who would complain?
google avatar

Cheryl B.

Yelp
Crazy busy but I hot-footed it down as soon as the session was out and only had to wait a respectable amount of time. That being , you know a good place has line. After confusion with what I actually ordered and getting the jumbo wings I actually ordered I found a place to sit outside and enjoy all of it. I wished I'd actually been served hot spice level as they were also out of their comeback sauce, guess I'll have to come back!! It was comfy in or out and I did decide for outside and surprisingly, it was not that noisy out. The Jumbo Wings are definitely that! I ate one with yummy spicy collard greens and that's all I could eat! Great place to eat, I'll try to get back before the conference is over!

Gerrica C.

Yelp
Food has no seasoning, when I asked the cashier what was good she looked at me and said idk as if I did. The kitchen staff laughed and played while my food was sitting was sitting in the window. Then a gentleman with a cask on his right arm was vey well mannered and polite BUT his cask seemed a little worn and dirty, which turned my stomach and ruined my appetite. The deviled eggs were atrocious. I just want my $22 back!!!
google avatar

Danny N.

Yelp
This place is so good! The Deviled eggs, Mac n cheese, and pickled okra sides are excellent. The chicken was packed full of spices and flavors. Highly recommend! Customer service was good. Workers were dope as hell. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Haemee R.

Yelp
It doesn't look like much but let me tell you... the pork chop sammich here just hits different. It's a must try. We got ours in lemon pepper with cole slaw and pickles. There's a lady here named Chris. She goes above and beyond to make sure you're taken care of. If you happen to be lucky to have her serve you, make sure you show your appreciation!! The ambience... southern comfort feels!! We got here around 5pm right before the dinner rush. By 5:30pm, this place was packed. Lol. After tasting the pork chop sandwich, I see why. They have a paid parking garage. $3 for the first hour and $1 for every half hour there after. They do have some street parking available but it's limited. They also have Tesla chargers across the street in another paid parking lot. We found this gem while driving through and charging ours. Definitely planning to stop by on our way back home!! :)
google avatar

Karen B.

Yelp
It's very friendly, down to earth, great tasting food. Not a place for ambiance. I ordered two-piece dark meat with cornbread and collards. There was some order inaccuracy.. I got 1 leg (looked like the leg of a hot wing) and 1 breast. Once I made this known I was given a third piece that was a thigh without any problem. Could use more maintenance on cleaning the tables. I think it wouldn't take much at all to make this a highly successful business, but it seems to do just enough. At this point, it's maintaining, but like a lot of things, it could be better. The main takeaway is that what I got was southern tasty.

Yelp
Good hot chicken in Birmingham. Not the best but definitely hits the spot. Get the beans

Yelp
Sometimes you don't know what your missing till you had it and it's gone. I can say nothing more about this chicken.
google avatar

Requel P.

Yelp
This chicken is soo good!!!! I didn't get the hot, but the mild was perfect for me! I ordered the chicken sandwich with the coleslaw on the side & deviled eggs for my side. The way the chicken crisp taste is sweet & tangy in a way that I've never had before. Love the small mom & pop vibez. It didn't take long for my food to come out. Located right by the City Walk. I highly recommend everyone to try this spot out when visiting Birmingham.
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
Chicken was very juicy and yummy and the side of fries were crispy and hot. Visited the location by the BJCC for the first time while I was at a convention. They were friendly and relatively quick. It is a bit tight inside, but during warmer weather they do have seating outside.
google avatar

Dennis G.

Yelp
We had the food truck so tried out the restaurant. We were not disappointed. Got the jumbo tenders in hot seasoning. I'll disagree with their description of a touch of heat but they were delicious just the same. More on the hot side than medium but flavorful. The fries were crispy good. Great service. It has the dive vibe that a hot chicken joint should have. Overs great experience.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing!!!! From the service to the food to the price. We stopped here on our way back from Florida and I am glad we did! They have different heat levels and I went with the mild. It still had plenty of kick to it! The fries were delicious as well. The food took about 10-15 mins to get but it was so fresh and crispy so I didn't mind. The workers were so kind! The restaurant was clean too! Located a few miles off the main interstate, plenty of parking. 10/10 recommend!!!!

Yelp
I have been wanting to eat here since before STUPID COVID. Finally! I don't know what they put in this chicken but I just finished my White Meat Dinner with Beans, Mac 'n Cheese and Cornbread. All I want to do is walk back and order more. I never thought chicken could melt in your mouth. I ordered Mild and it was great spice without having to reach for milk. And I am not a spice fanatic either. Forget the dipping sauce. This chicken is great as is.

Yelp
What a meal! I haven't eaten a ton of hot chicken in my day, but I've always enjoyed it. No different here. Got the regular "hot" heat level on my hot chicken po-boy, and it was plenty hot. There was so much chicken, I didn't even bother eating the bun. Fries were good, too, with some tasty Cajun seasoning.

Yelp
So I decided to give them another chance and I was happy that I did. The chicken wings with no heat were so delicious I wanted to go back to the store and get some more but that was my inner voice telling to what to do.. I will for sure come back and get the same order because it was really good this time.

Yelp
This is the best hot chicken I've ever had. Had the deviled eggs as a side... which I highly recommend. Got hot as a heat level and I'm truly glad I did. Everything about it was perfect! This will definitely be on my must hit restaurant list going forward! Everything about this place was perfect

Yelp
I ordered the hot tenders and fries... sadly feels like worst chicken I've had flavor wise for 15$! Not jumbo either just some regular over priced dry rub with no other season.

Yelp
The center table was perfect for our large group, though it was really hard to hear the waitress as she brought out food. The chicken was delicious. I got mild and swapped part of one chicken tender with a friend who got "hot damn;" I look forward to trying the hot tenders next time--and there will be a next time. If you don't want to be stuffed, split two orders between three people because the tenders are pretty big.

Yelp
Ok so this one is a tough one... This place was recommended by a co-worker so I was all hyped up to give this place a try. When I walked in I was immediately deflated. I thought it was a restaurant and it is but it seems more like cafeteria style to me. Regardless, I was going to try them out because to be successful enough to move from a food truck to a store front means you are doing something right. When I approached the window to place my order, I advised the young lady behind the register that this was my first time and I wanted to make sure I was ordering what I thought I was. I wanted a chicken sandwich but the menu said chicken tender under sandwiches and I wanted to make sure it was an actual sandwich and not tenders with just a piece of bread. You know what this young woman did... she laughed in my face... . I'm thinking to myself, its my first time and I just want to make sure. When I explained, she assisted me with my order... so she redeemed herself. I ordered the chicken tender sandwich with a side of mac n cheese... The menu is actually hilarious... the sandwich menu is actually labeled "Sammiches!" I kind of got a chuckle out of it. There are several items on the menu but I didn't want that much to eat so I ordered small. First you order you meal, then your spice level and then a side. The heat levels are: Lemon Pepper ~ Southern (no heat), Mild (slight heat), Hot (touch of burn), Hot Damn (no too smart, not too stupid) and Stupid Hot (or the bold & daring). I went with the Hot but I was tempted to try that HOT DAMN but I was sympathetic for my stomach. Now on to this here SAMMICH! GOOD LAWD A MERCY! THAT BAD BOY WAS SLAP YO MOMMA GOOD! I don't know what they are putting in this batter but sweet baby Jesus this chicken is amazing. I was too embarrassed to order another one but it truly was on my mind. This will be a permanent spot for me whenever I am in Birmingham, Alabama. Kudos to the cooks and to the owners for progressing in your dreams. You all should certainly stop by... and when you do... tell'em Drew sent ya! Y'all be Easy! Drew

Yelp
A must try hole in the wall if you are in the Birmingham area! The spices in the breading are a perfectly blended flavorful mix and meat is so juicy and tender it falls right off the bone. We got an order of mild, hot, and damn hot to test the heat. I personally am not someone that can take a lot of heat and the damn hot wasn't overwhelming at all.

Yelp
This is not a review I wanted to write but it must be said so maybe some changes can happen. Firstly the food is fantastic and I think Eugene's has some of the best chicken in Birmingham, However their service is very underwhelming. The people are great there are no issues there but the three different locations that we have been to have always taken 45 minutes or more to get basic meals. We have been waiting well over an hour for our food from the food truck. This is unacceptable. This falls on management. Whether it's logistics or staffing no one should have to wait this long for fried chicken. There are plenty of other chicken restaurants that I will go to instead of waiting too long for food. Please do better Eugene's!
