Houston’s Best Mexican Restaurants | Eater Houston

"This decades-old, family-owned Mexican restaurant, tucked in the middle of a nondescript retail strip in Spring, has not changed much over the years. Warm chips, accompanied by red and green salsas, precede meals such as chicken with mole sauce, carnitas, and platters of tamales, served with crispy tacos. Fajitas are a house favorite, available in options such as beef, chicken, shrimp, or a combination of all three." - Kayla Stewart

Eva’s isn’t just a restaurant, it’s a culinary love letter wrapped in tortillas and sealed with a smile. I ordered the pollo special and asked for it with a little extra heat… and honey, they delivered. The spice was chef’s kiss perfection, bold but not brutal, just how I like it. The waiters? Sweet, attentive, and genuinely kind. You’d think they were hosting you in their abuela’s kitchen. Prices? So reasonable I had to double-check the bill like… is this a prank? Topped it all off with a creamy horchata that made me want to dance a little cumbia in my seat. Trust me, Eva’s is that feel-good spot you didn’t know you needed.

Google
Cute little place with tons of daily specials and long happy hour window. Wasn't busy when we went Sunday afternoon. Got the queso, enchiladas al carbon, chile poblano, and sopapillas. The chile poblano had a great flavor and the sopapillas were perfect. Would love to come back and try other meals

Well this was our first time here and I was really impressed. The tamales where not good at all I was really disappointing. 😭 Another thing I wasn’t a big fan of was the queso it was pretty watery. The chicken mole enchiladas were pretty good. The beef enchiladas were pretty good as well. The service was good the waiter stayed on top of things. I do recommend trying it if you have been curious about this spot.

Google
Update- not as great of experience today. Ordered fish tacos and after the second attempt to get what I asked for (corn, not flour tortillas and fried, not grilled fish) I gave up and just ate leftovers from Roxane’s plate. They was good, service was good and I'll be back but not for fish tacos. Lol- enchiladas here!

Google
We have been coming here for years. It's family owned and ran. The food is amazing, made when you order, it comes to the table sizzling. Great prices! Give this place a try. It will become part of the family

Google
Hate to say it, but it was not a good experience. There were only two tables including ourselves, but the service was terrible, basically non-existent. The food was also not good. With so many Mexican/Tex-Mex options in the area, I would never go back to be ignored and served subpar food.

Google
The food is great in the atmosphere is great as well it's less crowded but they will probably go out of business because everybody goes to La Casa

Google
We absolutely love this place. The food is amazing and the service is superior. We come here at least twice a month if not more. Thank you for your amazing service and food!!

Yelp
The food was delicious and was reasonably priced. We went at 8:30 and stayed till 10:00 (the restaurant was open till 9:30) and the service was incredible for the time. the restaurant was not too fully or busy making this a good meetup spot. The drinks were especially good.

Yelp
I have been coming here for at least five years or five dollars apiece. They have gone up slowly as expected. Now they are eight dollars apiece and I went in today for my usual order and the burrito was about half the size!!! I told Eva the owner that they were super small for the price, and she said that they have been that price forever. I reminded her that I've been going there since were five dollars apiece and that I do not mind paying the extra because of inflation cost. But I will not be going back when the burritos got smaller as the price went up Like three bites and the burrito is gone! You would think when you are making a complaint to the owner, she would do or say something to make a long time customer happy instead of making excuses !!!Definitely need to find a new place to go!

Yelp
This place has been around the area for a long time, and I finally decided to give a try. I am glad I did! The employees were very nice and helpful, service was spot on. The food is very reasonably priced, and the portions are generous as well. I got two tacos Al carbon but could barely finish them. The drinks are also good! Margaritas were made just right as well as the michelada. Overall it is a great place with a chill vibe.

Yelp
My roommate and I live 0.9 miles. His family have lived in the neighborhood since he was a child. I've been living in the area over 2 years and he doesn't like to eat out To my surprise he invited me to go eat here at Eva's Mexican. I was exited. Margaritas delicious and it was a Sunday night at 745pm. Staff and service was great. (Well it was us and another table) BUT, you know when you go late and you can feel the employees rushing you or the smell of mop water ready to close? Well, they weren't concern about closing. Never felt rushed. To my surprise I LoVED the food. And to hear that he came here with his parents and siblings so many years. I order sour cream enchiladas n one mole enchilada and the beans / rice were like my mom's cooking. I ordered some to go. Believe me, it was gone by morning. My room had one of the special plates. All I know is that he was done after then I could take three bites. Chips and the salsa's are really good ( my opinion) price point great. Food hot. Service awesome. Host amazing. I'm glad he took me there. I'm writing this because for the pass few days I've been craving those enchiladas n margarita. And I couldn't remember the name but I found it quickly. If you want good homemade comfort Mexican food. I truly recommend you grab you a friend and go give them your business! You will not be disappointed. 20 plus years in biz. I can see why! They haven't gotten bored feeding the spring TX community. They are lucky to have this restaurant still standing strong because the customers have keep them open! Get your calendar out and plan a birthday. Or just get over there and see what I'm talking aboutI'm so hungry I didn't take pics but trust me I will post some I bet

Yelp
I love their beef fajita salad! Restaurant is always clean and servers are awesome.

Yelp
I could not recommend this place more. It is one of my favorite resturant in my area. Delicious food at a great price and large portions. I take my grandmother there often. She is 93 years old and loves to eat out. She says Eva's is the best Mexican food she has had in the area. She loves it and at 93 years old that says something!!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
I came randomly to stall time and was weary based off reviews. I had the fish tacos and they were really good! I would def be that for the tacos!
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Absolutely gross. Fajitas are completely dry and tasteless as well as the salsa. No flavor at all. Fajitas are like something bought in a bag at HEB. At least those would've been flavorful. Only giving it 2 stars because the service was decent.

Yelp
We have been loyal to this local spot for YEARS but recently service and most importantly the food taste and quality has gone down. I don't know if it's new mgt or new chefs but it's just not good. To make matters worst, the last time we ordered takeout, we called the restaurant afterwards not to get a refund but simply ask about the recipe for the fajitas enchiladas. The "chili gravy" in the fajita enchiladas tasted like watered down refried beans ! Rudely, the mgr hung up on us. Sorry, but Mexican food competition is fierce here in spring/ Houston , and we will take our business elsewhere.

Yelp
I can't begin to explain how disgusting the food is here....I ordered the cheese enchiladas. this consisted of kraft American cheese! the enchiladas were smothered in some brown sauce that looked like monkey diarrhea. topped with more kraft American single cheese. the tortillas seemed old, and had a very odd taste to them. Never again!!

Yelp
Okay, so this is my second time reviewing Eva's. I will say- this 4 star review is definitely a generous one. However, since my last review of the place I've came back s few times. Several things have changed and I'm pretty impressed. First, I'm a sucker for a cheap margarita. The happy hour Rita is $2.50 now. They're relatively large, they taste great- you just can't go wrong here. Second, the first time I came here the chips and salsa tasted extremely off-putting. Like they were old. I either had a bad batch or the chips they were getting were just bad. The last few times I've come they tasted great along with both the red and green salsa. Still prefer the red over the green, but that's just me. Third, the servers and staff in general have been great. They're attentive and make sure you're taken care of. I've been here during their peak time during weekdays and the place never gets too packed, however the good service really speaks volumes. Now, as I said in my last review I regretted not getting the fajitas. Finally got to try them and they were very tasty. I got the fajitas for one mixed beef, chicken, and shrimp for $11.95. The portion is HUGE. When it came out I was certain that it was for two. For the price it's unbeatable. Honestly, could have skipped out on the shrimp though. They're store bought frozen and lack a bit of flavor, however the actual fajita beef and chicken is delicious. Rice and beans are nothing to write home about- just add some salt and pepper. Overall satisfied with this place!

Yelp
We've been going to Eva's for quite a few years. The service is always fantastic and the food is consistent and always tastes great. One of the best parts of this place is, if you go enough, they really get to know you. Walking into a restaurant and having the servers wave at you with a smile as you walk to your table is a wonderful experience. There are two locations we know about - one on Kuykendahl and one on Spring Cypress. They aren't too far apart, but it might be good to know that the prices at the Kuykendahl location are a bit lower (that may have changed over the past few months though). Both locations are great places for a quiet meal or even a family meal.

Yelp
This IS the place! We are always looking for great quality Tex-Mex that is off the beaten path. We stopped in and we were not disappointed. We both had the number 4 lunch special. The food was very good but the chili gravy made the meal, this stuff is fantastic, really helped make the meal. Queso and guacamole was flavorful and plentiful. The wait staff was very attentive and they are practicing social distancing. The atmosphere is hole in the wall and the food is over the top "hole in the wall" good.

Yelp
I left this restaurant a very happy customer. Enchiladas Verde were excellent. Chips and salsa were fresh. Service was fast and friendly. And best of all, the price was fantastic. This restaurant does not have great curb appeal. If you're driving by you'd never think to stop here. But I highly recommend it if you want a reasonably priced, very tasty Mexican meal.

Yelp
My family & I have been eating here for years. We generally order the beef fajitas cooked spicy with jalapeños and corn tortillas. The Top shelf margarita is not too sweet, not too sour, but never disappoints. The food and drinks are reasonably priced, great customer service, and the food excellent!

Shelby S.

Yelp
The service is good, but food is not the best. The drinks are cheap, which is always a plus.
google avatar

Yelp
Margaritas, happy hour, where on point. Food was pretty good and tHe service was great! Definitely coming back!

Yelp
This place used to be a decent lunch spot, but over the past couple of years, the quality of food and service has deteriorated. I visited recently to grab a quick bite with a friend. We were seated quickly, but the waiter seemed to forget about us after that. We waited about 30 minutes simply for someone to come by and take our order. I requested queso for my chips and never received any, even after kindly reminding them a couple times. Once we got our food, it was bland and soggy. The entire experience was just miserable. I ended up getting food poisoning, so I can't even say that I will go back and give it another chance. Just thinking about Eva's makes me nauseous. I recommend staying far, far away.
google avatar

Matt G.

Yelp
I met my Mom here for dinner. We were seated front and center, almost near the door. It it took a while for the server to approach our table to take our orders. In fact, I had to flag down another employee passing our table before our actual server acknowledged himself. The restaurant seemed to be caught off guard by the number of diners that night as they were clearly short-staffed and a bit busy. Nonetheless, I ordered a combination meal (2 cheese, 1 beef enchilada), and my Mom ordered a beef dinner. Both of us enjoyed our meals. Eva's should consider hiring more food runners and/or bussers to free up the servers. Other than that it was a really good meal. I'll have to drop them one star though for the wait.
google avatar

Aimee B.

Yelp
To my surprise this place was fast and very tasty. Their margaritas will get the job done and the prices was better than ever. I've been back three times since I've been introduced to Eva's
google avatar

Abbey B.

Yelp
Been eating at this location for almost 10 years. My go-to Mexican place. Food comes out fast, is good quality, portions are large and the prices are very good! The staff is extremely friendly and remembers what you frequently order. I walk in, get seated, get up and go wash my hands and I come back and there is already a queso and an unsweet tea waiting for me. I usually get tea, queso, and whatever combination meal I'm feeling that day, followed by sopapillas.
google avatar

Erika L.

Yelp
The mole enchiladas are spicy, not so sweet. A lil more chocolate in the mix and I would've loved it. The chile con queso is aightttt. Nothing special.
google avatar

Jeremiah M.

Yelp
This place has been recommended by Houston Chronicle several times as a great urban restaurant. We decided to come have a late lunch today, the service was good and the good was better. We had fajitas and Mexican tacos, both were very delicious! $2.50 beers during happy hour!!
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
This place has been around for forever. The prices are very fair for what you get. Never had a bad experience with service. Everyone is very attentive and polite. It's just in an old building that needs some maintenance.
google avatar

Sergio R.

Yelp
Looking for some delicious Mexican food, definitely come grub on the food here. Fine place to bring family and friends for a great night. Service was great and margarita was perfect match for the food

Brittany P.

Yelp
I will give it one star because the food was ok but that all changed when a la Cucaracha came crawling by our table!
google avatar

Meaghan S.

Yelp
Great neighborhood Mexican food place. Casual. Great margaritas! Inexpensive tasty food! The waitstaff is incredibly attentive and nice. Recommend: the Mexican tacos, tacos al carbon, and the tortilla soup with avocados is so tasty and a classic comfort food. Love going here for the neighborhood feel.
google avatar

Lacey H.

Yelp
My family has been going to Eva's for YEARS. I just went yesterday after not going for a while and the drink special was $1.99 margaritas I don't know if they is every Tuesday nowadays but it was happening yesterday anyway! this place is good but now that I have eaten pretty much every mexican restaurant within a 5 mile radius I just don't love the food here like I used to (del pueblo plz). For food, a once in a while place as far as drinks though, you really can't get a better deal they put A LOT of alcohol in their margaritas.
google avatar

Erica T.

Yelp
Get Eva's to go at least once every two weeks, food is consistently high quality, only reason for four stars is because sometimes they forget my Chile con queso or my extra beef taco. When I "dine in" the margaritas are great and the beer is cold. Good food at a great price.
google avatar

Jeff C.

Yelp
When I used to live in Houston before moving to Denver, I used to come here quite frequently. When they first started out, they used to serve their meals on IHOP plates. No they are "fancy" with all matching plates, LOL. Anyway, I love Eva's. The food is really good and pretty inexpensive. Their chile con queso is good and they have really good chile gravy for their tacos al carbon or enchiladas etc. Yes the definitely make strong but good margaritas. I literally could eat here 3 times a week--good thing I am in Denver now or I would weigh 500 lbs. So check it out for good, not fancy Mexican food. Of course you can go to lupe tortillas, papasitos, and the other upscale places--but for the price and the friendly staff, you can't beat Eva's!
google avatar

Jasmine B.

Yelp
If u like this u are crazy, the food has no taste and it's not real Mexican food! The drinks are cheap but that's it
google avatar

Becky L.

Yelp
Had the Mexican Fajitas they were great! The quantity was enough for two persons. Servers were nice.

Kyla E.

Yelp
I absolutely love Eva's. Their raspberry tea is the absolute best and I wouldnt order fajitas anywhere else. The Churros are the best in town. The service is always fast and the restaurant is always clean.
google avatar

Mikel R.

Yelp
Services substandard. Food is ok. But don't leave any items behind cuz the wait staff will take him home

Nicole P.

Yelp
Horrible place!! The food tasted old and the water was disgusting. My friends had the chicken fajitas and all three of them had to stop eating due to a bad smell and rubbery taste. The entire experience was bad and I will never go back. I think the health inspector needs to make a visit!!!
google avatar

Ronald L.

Yelp
I have come here for lunch over the last three years. I love this place. The food Is very good, and it is consistent. I have never had a bad experience. This is one of those places, that once you have been here a few times, you are treated like family.. They remember your favorite meal, and your favorite place to sit, and are never rude... It's nice to know your waiter... And they mean it when they ask how you are. This is an "old school" place to eat, not a 5 star "forget who you are " place, these are 5 star people that serve 5 star food. Enjoy...

Omar B.

Yelp
Everything was fine only complaint I had was the Horchata I had, tasted like they just put the powder in and mixed it. After he refilled my drink it didn't even taste sweet it tasted watered down. Besides that everything else was good. The food was delicious but just don't get the Horchata, just go with a regular soft drink and you'll be good.

Sam Z.

Yelp
The service was good, but that was the only positive thing I can say. Salsa was no good. Taco shell was stale. Not much flavor and the portions are small. Bathroom was filthy and stinky. I won't come back, too many other options.
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
This place was just okay. Food was very bland. Very small beer selection, and the salsa had weird texture. My friend had the enchiladas, which he only had one bite of because the meat had a bad flavor.
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
I ordered enchiladas verde with rice and beans it tasted like a microwave dinner. It was pretty obvious the enchiladas were frozen before. The salsa that came with the chips was horrible with no flavor. Money wasted! I will never go back to this place.
google avatar

Natalie S.

Yelp
I think the people that actually like and recommend this place are the ones that have no idea what real mexican (or tex mex for that matter) food is supposed to taste like. Sub par all across the board. I'd rather go to Taco Cabana to get my below average tex mex grub on than this place.

Tiarra D.

Yelp
Nope, never again, there was lipstick on my coffee cup, the food was nasty, the tortillas weren't cooked. Only thing I liked was the chips.
google avatar

Zachary R.

Yelp
This was the worst food I've ever eaten. The service was beyond terrible. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. There are better Mexican restaurants in the area.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
I LOVE this place. I grew up going to this place and when I come to visit, its like a class reunion everytime I walk through the door. Everybody still goes there. They have the best margaritas... even if they are a little strong! Be careful. I have to say they are an enchilada place... best in the city. I will not eat cheese enchiladas anywhere else because they are never the same. The enchilada gravy here is perfect. And the fried stuffed avocado is sinful. MMMM.... Great little hole in the wall tex-mex place.

Ariel S.

Yelp
I like this place. It's very casual and the food is above average consistently. I especially like the combination plates. The margaritas are big and yummy. It's a nice place to visit. Not too expensive.
google avatar

Jheris J.

Yelp
It's not the worst Mexican but I don't think I will ever return. The salsa has a very weird taste and texture. The food is overall just very bland. There are plenty other inexpensive Mexican style restaurants to eat at.

Matthew N.

Yelp
The food and people here are an absolute delight! I have been a regular now for quite some time and have not had an issue since. The prices are more than fair and the servers treat us with great respect and often hold thought filled conversions with myself and my family. They aren't just concerned with their food but as to the satisfaction of their guests as well. We always leave Evas with smiles awaiting the next return.
google avatar

Stephanie T.

Yelp
I'm gonna have to agree with Lacey D on this. If you go to Eva's get yourself a rita!! So cheap and so yummy. Plus they make you feel darn good. I did also indulge in some cheese enchiladas which I thought were pretty good and definitely cheesy. But I will be returning for happy hour with the girls and some nice strong ritas!

A L.

Yelp
Great Chicken Quesadillas, Fajitas, Chile con Queso & Don Julio shots(nice amount). Those are my favs, but as a whole this place has good food at a decent price. I wouldn't write a review if this place wasn't a good place to dine with a pleasant atmosphere.
google avatar

Barbara R.

Yelp
Being coming to Eva's a long time, great food, reasonable pricing, great ritas, never disappoints.
