The Hottest New Restaurants Around D.C., July 2024

"The downtown Vienna, Virginia space that formerly called Bazin’s on Church home flipped into a chic new seasonal American spot from Clarity’s former chef Nick Palermo and general manager Sam Schnoebelen. The reinvented restaurant opens with a dry-aged Roseda Farms cheeseburger, ricotta and spinach cavatelli dressed with braised brisket and meatballs, and kombu-poached Alaskan halibut. Produce from Earth N Eats helps build out much of the menu, including a bright heirloom tomato starter, gazpacho, and kale or beet salads." - Tierney Plumb

Google
10/10 experience. My husband took me for my birthday and everyone at Evelyn Rose made me feel so special. Eliana was an awesome server and made me laugh, as well as offered great recommendations and fast service. The food was SO. GOOD. The tamale was fantastic, the rustic potatoes are a must, the rainbow trout was cooked perfectly and the pirogies had so much flavor. Will be back!

Incredible meal start to finish. Jamon Iberico and spiced pecan was delicious combination. Had the pappardelle pasta entree that was amazing especially paired with the sommeliers Gamay recommendation. They have such a great dessert variety as well. Mahmood was a great waiter and treated us so well while we celebrated a birthday, even brought out champagne to toast! It was great to see a slightly younger crowd too, felt less stuffy than Bazins. We will definitely come back!

I was very much looking forward to Evelyn Rose based on the reviews I'd read as a restaurant to celebrate a special evening with dear friends. I had a bit of trouble reaching someone to make my reservation for 7 people (I emailed and had to leave 2 voicemails as well), but I understood that typically they do not book for tables larger than 6 people. I appreciate their flexibility. The ambiance is gorgeous and the menu is quite interesting. Unfortunately, the food quality was uneven. The kangaroo tartare was tasty and complex. The mackerel crudo was MAGNIFICENT. The beet salad was also lovely. However, the fried green tomatoes were barely edible. The bread was just fine, as were the beef fat fries. My scallops were cooked beautifully, but the peach utterly disappeared, flavor-wise and the mushy texture was less than appetizing. I heard good things about the burger, ratatouille, and pasta, but no raves. I was disappointed in dessert, other than the pana cotta everything looked pretty without tasting all that great. The brownie chunks in my brownie sundae were cold, dense bricks. Our server was lovely and attentive. I saw the manager checking in with all of the tables around us, but he never checked in with us. I'm not sure if he personally knew all of those other patrons, or if he preferred to avoid a table full of women, but I found that rather odd and off-putting. I enjoyed my experience overall, which is why I rated this 4 stars (I cannot deny the deliciousness of that crudo, beet salad, and kangaroo). I admire the adventurous nature of the menu. I loved the ambiance. However, I'm not sure that I will return.

We loved everything about this restaurant. The beet salad, pasta dishes, and dessert were delicious. Sam and the staff were so kind and joyous. Highly recommend coming here! Can’t wait to be back soon to try all the other dishes! 🙌🏼✨

Our dining experience was a major disappointment. We all ordered the tasting menu, which started with a single fried oyster. The second course didn’t arrive until nearly 50 minutes later, and the rest of the dishes continued to come out at an extremely slow pace. It also would have been appreciated if we were asked how we preferred the wagyu cooked. While many people enjoy it rare to medium-rare, it was far too rare for our taste. Although our server was very friendly and the restaurant was not overly busy due to its small size, the long delays between courses ultimately ruined the experience for us. Additionally, when we asked the hostess about parking specifically whether we could park in the lot around the corner since the garage was full, she was unable to provide any guidance. The dessert, however, was the highlight of the meal and the one bright spot in an otherwise underwhelming experience.

My wife and I celebrated our 2nd anniversary at Evelyn Rose, and we had a great experince from start to finish. The atmosphere was cozy yet elegant, perfect for any special occasion, and every member of the staff (at least it seemed like it!) Made us feel genuinely welcomed. We both chose the tasting menu which consisted of creatively and balanced dishes. The kitchen even went out of their way to substitute a course for my wife, which was a thoughtful touch that really stood out to us. Pictured is the braised short rib and butternut squash tres leches (one of the best desserts I've ever had!)

Google
We had such an amazing anniversary dinner at Evelyn Rose! Our server, Ryan, was so kind and helpful — his recommendations were spot on, and he even shared that the red shiso in the Flash Seared Hawaiian Kanpachi came from his grandmother’s backyard, which made the dish extra special. The owner also stopped by a few times to make sure we were having a great evening and even surprised us with champagne to celebrate. For mains, we tried both pastas (Double Egg Yolk Pappardelle and Whole Milk Ricotta Cavatelli) along with the 42-Day Dry Aged Roseda Farm Ribeye — all were delicious and cooked perfectly. We ended with the Butternut Tres Leches with duck egg ice cream, which was creamy, seasonal, and the perfect way to finish the night. Incredible food, warm service, and thoughtful touches made this one of our best dining experiences. Highly recommend!

Google
It was a great night at Evelyn rose. The food was incredible as expected. But what made the night special was Sam and his team, he made us feel extremely welcomed and comfortable. Very warm and hospitable. Even gave us a complimentary champagne pour and hot sauce.

Yelp
I recently returned from the west coast and was delighted to discover that my new favorite restaurant, Evelyn Rose is in my town of Vienna, VA. The food, service, and ambiance are exceptional. Although I usually refrain from taking pictures of my meals, the dessert was so outstanding that it deserved one. Evelyn Rose has definitely earned a spot on my list of favorites.

Yelp
Perfect date night spot. My new favorite and sadly I live an hour away. This place is amazing. Do not be fooled by the unassuming entrance this is a restaurant powerhouse. I am a food SNOB and this place has won me over. Service, impeccable. When you visit you'll meet Sam and Nick, the owners and you can tell this is more than a business it is a labor of love. Menu off the charts. You have to get the "French Onion Rings" We had those and the capicola to start, they gave us fresh baked focaccia and oil for the table. Dinner got the Fried Chicken and Alaskan Halibut. Dynamite. We tried the Fresh Air and Watermelon Margarita, both were great. This place is a must-try,

Yelp
Thank you lord for finally giving us above average food in Vienna!! Heard the sad news that Bazins had closed down, but heard about the opening of Evelyn Rose! I was excited to try this place after hearing about the chef owners from Clarity were involved. Ordered some cocktails to start, toasted sesame old fashioned and the gin cocktail. I'd skip the toasted sesame old fashioned as it tasted like I was drinking my dumpling dipping sauce. But the gin cocktail was pretty good. I went for traditional old fashioned after the miss with the toasted sesame OF. For appetizers we got the Caesar and beet salads. The Caesar dressing was not traditional but wasn't bad. Dressing was a tad runny for my liking but flavors were good. The main dishes were phenomenal and for our return visits we'll be skipping the appetizers (but I do need to try the french onion soup inspired onion rings) Maine included the smaller portioned Cavatelli, Pappardelle and Ribeye steak. Wow.. all 3 of the mains were delish. The ribeye was cooked a perfect medium/medium rare. The sauce on both of the pasta dishes was outstanding with a lot of depth of flavor. Cannot wait to return....

Yelp
Loved this new restaurant! So delighted to meet Evelyn's grandson and to learn that Evelyn and Rose are two real life grandmas, not just some random names. Super friendly service. Kids friendly and cozy yet classy ambiance. Delicious food! We'll be back!

Yelp
I stopped by the second day of opening, and was pleasantly surprised. I have never been to Bazin's on Church or Clarity before, so this was my first time trying Nick Palermo's dishes. (I know, this review is super late lol) After hearing such good reviews about his work, my boyfriend and I stopped by to try it out as a date night. There was plenty of street parking, along with a garage to park at. Inside the restaurant, it has a very welcoming ambiance and has simplistic but beautiful decor. You can see that the team took a lot of time and consideration for what their menu, decorations, and layout should be like. The staff are super nice, welcoming, and super helpful with recommendations. Honestly from wherever you sit inside the restaurant, you can see all of the staff members cooking and preparing your meal, which is fun (there's an inside kitchen, but it's a bit more open than other spots). All the items on the menu are delicious, and as servers walked around with other guests' meals, I couldn't stop staring at each of the dishes. We tried: -steak tartare -scallops -passionfruit mocktail -short rib - pork shoulder -chocolate chip ice cream sundae All delicious! My favorite was the short rib and the drink. I think since I was in the mood for a lot of chocolate (IYKYK), I really liked the sundae a lot. Stop by if you can!

Yelp
I mean, I expected nothing less... The place is filled with warmth, passion - it exudes from everyone there - and of course delicious food and cocktails. The dishes are elegantly composed and flavorful, the cocktails approachable and refined, the staff friendly and welcoming. If you are looking for a cocktail... I mean try them all... but Breath of Fresh Air was on a level of its own. It is perfectly balanced, light and exactly what you want on a summer evening. Truly genius in its simplicity. (Their take on a dirty martini was also very, very good...) The skate I had for dinner was divine, succulent yet fresh, and my gosh - if you haven't had skate before - try it here... they will make you a fan ;) My husband had the rib-eye and could not stop raving about the mushroom relish it was garnished with and honestly, I understand. It was cooked perfectly and unlike some instances where the steak is masked by sauce, this only served to elevate it. We continued to hit high-notes with dessert and between the three of us in the party, we tried them all. Though everything was delicious the Mixed Berry Panna Cotta was by far my favorite. Whoever is the master mind behind that delicate strawberry basil combination... I mean truly inspired. It was a breath of summer and paired so well with the raspberry sorbet. Speaking of the sorbets - I just wanted a bowl of that rhubarb sorbet that came with the lemon meringue - I could eat that all day, every day! Honestly though the vibes are truly something special here and I can't wait to see where the rockstars leading Evelyn Rose will take this place in the days, weeks and years to come! 100% recommend, 100% will be back!

Yelp
I'm getting old because I remember going to Bazin's on Church when it opened as the new hot spot in downtown Vienna years ago. It's always a bit sad when longtime local spots close...but having a new farm to table restaurant like Evelyn Rose fill some big shoes is a relief. The spot looks similar and you get the feel of being in a downtown DC spot while in Vienna. The place is jumping on a Tuesday evening. The menu isn't tremendously long but there are definitely numerous good choices. Apps: Pan Seared Halibut Cheeks Beet Salad Entrees: Ricotta & Spinach Cavatelli Skate Franchaise Ribeye Burger The apps were very enjoyable...the halibut cheeks are delicious and I'd get that as an entree if possible. Beet salad is light and tasty. We all thoroughly enjoyed our entrees and look forward to coming back. Hoping for another 18 years of Evelyn Rose like its predecessor...Excellent food, great ambiance and outstanding service is a win for all of Vienna...

Yelp
Evelyn Rose is a New American Restaurant in Vienna that opened yesterday. In the waiting area, there were framed photographs of Evelyn and Rose. I liked how the restaurant had wooden shelves with vintage dishes, old photographs, and floral arrangements. For drinks, my husband enjoyed a glass of Port City Optimal Wit Wheat Ale. I enjoyed Rose's Rose's, which consisted of St. Germain Elderflower, rose, citrus, and rhubarb bitters. It was floral, tart, and refreshing. While waiting for food, we enjoyed a basket of warm Sliced Rosemary Foccacia Bread served with EVOO. We weren't super hungry, so we skipped appetizers and went straight to entrees. My husband enjoyed the House Ground Dry Aged Roseda Farms Cheeseburger with Kennebec Fries, while I enjoyed the Skate Franchaise A La Palermo. Both dishes were well portioned and had a nice smoky flavor to them. Next time, we hope to try some appetizers (including Carolina Tuna Tartare) and desserts (including their Lemon Meringue Tart).

Yelp
Amazing food and excellent service. We were seated immediately on a weeknight. The menu is small but full of really great choices. The waiter answered our questions and gave us good advice on what to eat. There is no kids' menu, but the pasta comes in two sizes, so the kids were able to have a $14 pasta&meatball. They were the only kids in there: it's more of a double date night ambience than family ambience.

Yelp
Chef Nick Palermo and Manager Sam Schnoebelen have just opened their own restaurant, Evelyn Rose, on Church Street in Vienna, in the former Bazin's space. We had the pleasure of dining there last night for their grand opening, and it was fantastic. The food was outstanding, and the hospitality was top-notch, as would be expected from such an experienced chef and front-of-house manager. The vibe is something special, and comparisons to the original Clarity at its best are extremely favorable, even on their first night. Chef Nick and Sam Schnoebelen have brought to Evelyn Rose great food done to the highest standards and the welcoming atmosphere of an upscale neighborhood restaurant. During our first meal, we had a fabulous time and were treated like old friends. Chef Nick's food was, as expected, simply superb. He elevates even simple ingredients to a new paradigm, combining flavors and presentation at the highest level. Moreover, Chef Nick has carried forward all the eclectic ingredients, variety of menu, artistry, and expert preparation we all remember from his other endeavors. I highly recommend checking out Evelyn Rose for an unparalleled dining experience. There's no need to wait, as they are hitting the mark right from the start! Go to Evelyn Rose and see for yourself what Chef Nick and Sam are doing there now. It's like coming home after being away for a long while.

Yelp
We felt particularly indecisive about our Friday night dinner date options, and Evelyn Rose was one of the three restaurants my husband suggested that we should choose from. Knowing nothing about the restaurant other than the fact that it was new, we walked in without a reservation and were surprised to see the place fully packed. Lucky for us, a couple at the bar was just leaving the area, and we were seated right away. First of all, everything on the menu sounded delicious, so we decided to order a variety of smaller portion dishes. We started with scallop and beef tartare and were blown away. They had so much flavor and were perfectly balanced - salt, fat, acid, heat (anyone?)! They were also just the right portion for us to up our appetite while we wait for *heavier* courses. While we wait, we ordered a couple of cocktails (I ordered Rose's Rose, and my husband ordered Evelyn), and they were both so good. I love that the one I ordered was not too sweet :) we also asked the bartender to pick out wine for us- loved that they gave a chance to taste and choose one that would work better with our pastas. We ordered smaller portions of Pappardelle and Cavatelli - both delicious, though we both liked the Cavatelli a bit better because of its phenomenally umami-packed meatballs (the best meatball I've had!). We emptied all dishes clean and asked our bartender if there is a dessert wine (not on the menu but she gave us a small complimentary pour for us - did I mention that the service was top notch?!). Last but not least, Panna Cotta was the best I've had - loved everything about it. As seen in the photo, it had a ton of fruits, and I think I tasted basil in the Panna Cotta - overall refreshing! I feel compelled to write one of the first reviews because this place needs to be known! I'd highly recommend to anyone looking for a delicious meal and good times :)

Yelp
Went 2 weeks after opening, and was blown away. Usually new restaurants have service issues of some type, but not Evelyn Rose. Service was top notch from start to finish -- in our reservation, I had noted we had a 9 month old with us, and they had a table with high chair set up before we arrived. We ordered wine, and the sommelier made a particular effort to entertain our kid during the sampling, which we appreciated (and she did, too!). Started off with house made focaccia which was perfect, warm and crispy outside and chewy inside. Tartare was out of this world good (heavy on the umami). Usually burgers are overcooked, but not here. Burger was perfectly cooked despite being a very thick (1"+) patty. Peanut butter tart was also great. Seriously, every item we ordered was knocked out of the park -- this might be the best restaurant in Vienna, even moreso than its big brother restaurant Clarity. If there is one criticism, is that portions are more European-sized but prices are very high. But it's worth it.

Yelp
Beautiful interior and cozy. Staff was intentional to allergies and food restrictions and extremely attentive. And the food was delightful. We tried the short rib pappardelle, smoked carrots, heirloom tomatoes and burrata salad and a burger. Split between two people it was the perfect way to try so many items on the menu. We capped off the dinner with the chocolate peanut butter ganache dessert. Overall great experience and food was such a delight. Will be back!!

Yelp
Amazing meal here ! From the creative, yummy drinks to the delicious all homemade desserts! The attention to detail was not missed, beautifully updated inside, complimentary fabulous focaccia, seasonal drinks, appetizers entrees and desserts were stunning and scrumptious. New owners have done a marvelous job creating a wonderful dining experience. Planning on working our way thru the entire menu.

Yelp
Everything was quite delicious and excellent customer care. They are just getting started, but they obviously have experience in this business. Hopefully, they'll be able to continue the high standard that they've created initially. We will keep coming back to try to find out.
