How Coronavirus Affects America’s Coffee Shops - Eater

"In New York, Everyman Espresso, an independent micro-chain with three locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn, is 100 percent focused on supporting hospital workers. Co-owner Sam Penix is a fixture at the company’s East Village location, which he has owned and managed since 2009 and worked at since 2007, eventually moving into an apartment just a few doors down from the space. Everyman, which had been practicing a kind of socially distanced takeout service model, fully closed on April 4, and Penix immediately pivoted into a new model under the moniker Fuel Frontlines." - Jordan Michelman

Bohemian coffeshop adjacent to an indie theater, really nice service and strong wifi. The crowd is artsy students and neighborhood locals. Decent seating arrangements. My matcha latte was ok but a bit too lukewarm. They have a good assortment of teas in top of coffee beverages.

Spacious setting with ample room to relax. I enjoyed a cortado that was nicely made, though it had a bit more milk than I prefer. I’d definitely return to explore more of their offerings!

Everyman Espresso near Union Square in NYC is a delightful haven for coffee aficionados and tea enthusiasts alike. Nestled in the bustling heart of Manhattan, this cozy café offers a serene escape from the city's relentless pace, making it an ideal spot for both a quick caffeine fix and a leisurely break. Upon entering Everyman Espresso, one is immediately struck by its minimalist yet inviting decor. The ambiance is a harmonious blend of rustic charm and modern sophistication, with exposed brick walls, sleek wooden furniture, and an abundance of natural light filtering through large windows. This thoughtfully designed space creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for both solo visitors and small groups. The highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the cortado. Everyman Espresso has truly mastered the art of this classic Spanish coffee. The cortado was a perfect balance of rich espresso and velvety steamed milk, creating a smooth, well-rounded flavor profile. The espresso itself was robust and aromatic, with just the right amount of acidity to complement the sweetness of the milk. Served in a charming glass tumbler, it was not only a treat for the palate but also a visual delight. This cortado stands out as one of the best we've had, a testament to Everyman Espresso's dedication to quality and craftsmanship. Equally impressive was the hibiscus tea. Often, hibiscus tea can be overly sweet or too tart, but Everyman Espresso struck the perfect balance. The tea was refreshingly tangy with subtle floral notes, and its natural sweetness was perfectly calibrated, allowing the delicate flavors to shine through without overwhelming the palate. Served either hot or iced, it is a versatile choice for any season, offering a delightful alternative for non-coffee drinkers or those looking to diversify their beverage choices. Everyman Espresso's commitment to quality extends beyond their beverages to their customer service. The baristas are knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about their craft. They take the time to engage with customers, offering recommendations and sharing insights about their meticulously sourced beans and teas. This level of personalized service enhances the overall experience, making each visit feel special. Moreover, Everyman Espresso places a strong emphasis on sustainability and ethical sourcing. They partner with reputable coffee roasters and tea suppliers who prioritize fair trade practices and environmentally friendly methods. This commitment to ethical sourcing not only ensures that the beverages are of the highest quality but also aligns with the values of socially conscious consumers. The café also offers a selection of pastries and light snacks, sourced from local bakeries and crafted to complement their drink menu. Whether you're in the mood for a flaky croissant, a hearty scone, or a delectable cookie, there's something to satisfy every craving. In conclusion, Everyman Espresso near Union Square is a gem in the NYC coffee scene. The exceptional cortado and hibiscus tea we enjoyed were just a glimpse of what this café has to offer. With its inviting ambiance, top-notch beverages, and commitment to quality and sustainability, Everyman Espresso provides a memorable and enriching experience. Whether you're a coffee connoisseur or simply in search of a cozy spot to unwind, Everyman Espresso is well worth a visit.

Google
One of the best cortados I've ever had, especially opened late. This is a gem and I'm not sure if it's the coffee or the guy making it but it is a winning combo. Cool location too. This place was opened later than Google has it listed so if you're in the area late night, this is the spot.

Google
It’s a nice big cafe with lots of tables. It’s got a young trendy vibe. It can get crowded at times. We had lattes and they were just OK. Both lattes tasted different. There were no consistency between two cups. They don’t have milk out. They ask you if you want sugar added to your latte. They use counter culture beans.

Google
I’ve been meaning to stop by here every time I’m in town. Glad I finally did! Staff was friendly, and the espresso was TASTY! Nice, bright and fruity. They even had these cute little bear cookies! Definitely looking forward to coming back.

Seriously delicious coffee and super nice people working there! Friendly and great service I will definitely be back!

Google
Love stopping by and getting my iced honey oat milk lattes with chocolate croissants in the afternoons!!! Very friendly staff! I also appreciate that they value their community very much. They’re also covid conscious and require vaccine confirmation to dine in which I think is great of them to do! Def check them out!

Yelp
My friend who has worked in the coffee industry for most of her life says this is her favorite coffee in the city, so I had to come check it out for myself! Everyman Espresso is extremely underrated, and has really good quality espresso with care taken into all of its components. I got my standard - an oat milk cappuccino and very much enjoyed it. Strong coffee flavor with a nice textural experience for the entire drink. Great latte art, and cute space. It is a small, a bit out of the way coffee shop and definitely deserves more foot traffic. It is definitely better than average. I will want to return to give them more tries, but as of right now they definitely stand in the top 20, maybe 10 coffee spots for me in NYC. Great option for some awesome coffee near Union Sq !
google avatar

Yelp
Everyman espresso did not disappoint! I came here before the Union square green market opened up around 8 looking for a new coffee shop for me to walk around with. Everyman espresso was so welcoming and fun the second I walked in as they have a really cool space here. The cappuccino was the perfect temperature and the ratio of espresso to milk was amazing! Don't skip this place if you are in the area!

Yelp
Awesome spot! I stopped by on a Friday afternoon in order to pass 30 minutes of time, and there was plenty of seating, free wifi, and great coffee. No blaring music, and overall just felt like a super chill and welcoming cafe where I could have hung out for the next couple of hours if I had the need to. As for the coffee, I got a cortado, and it was amazing. Coffee was more on the nutty side, which is my preference, and the cortado itself was made super well. Great balance of milk with coffee made for a great mouth feel. Will 100% be back, and looking forward to trying their other locations as well!

Yelp
.75/1 Ambience; 1.5/2 Beverages; 1/1 Service; .75/1 Value I was introduced to Everyman Espresso by a friend who is a hobbyist specialty barista and is very serious about coffee, and Everyman Espresso is one of his highest recommendations in NYC. The cafe itself was converted from a movie theater lobby, and some of those components were retained in the design. The atmosphere has hipster vibes with the exposed brick wall and an organic feel with elements that feel almost mismatched. Almost every time we've been, there was usually little to very limited seating left between individuals working on their laptops or chatting away. The baristas have always been very friendly and quick. I've had their regular iced coffees and various lattes, and my friend drinks his usual espresso. The flavor of the espresso is strong and robust, and they really allow the richness of the coffee to shine despite the milk and cane sugar additives. Having also tried their Vietnamese iced latte, however, I could not taste any difference between the specialty drink that costs more and just a regular iced coffee (I am a fan of Vietnamese iced coffees/lattes and would regularly drink it for years, courtesy of preparation by my best friend who is Vietnamese). Given that it is specialty coffee, I think the prices are for the most part fair, sans the Vietnamese iced coffee that was in no way different to justify the additional cost. Despite that setback, this is a great coffee place and one that will remain on my list of go-tos for a long time.

Yelp
Came at 10am on a weekday, lots of tables and nice little space. Ordered a matcha latte, it was pretty solid. Great spot for a coffee chat!
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
Solid espresso, lots of space inside to sit and work a bit, they offer wifi. Espresso was a touch on the bitter side but still good, service was very friendly, didn't try any of their pastry items.
google avatar

Yelp
To Tan, the incredible woman who makes a perfect cappuccino, I am so grateful to have met you on this quick trip! You helped to set my morning mood with delicious coffee and kindness. To Black & White coffee, who I believe supplies Everyman with their coffee, your beans are spectacular and I look forward to buying your beans. I'm not sure which blend I had, but it was bright, while maintaining a spectacular balance. Really good stuff! Can't wait to come back. See you next time!
google avatar

Yelp
I got a tea tonic drink which was really excellent since I was trying to avoid caffeine. The space is interesting because it is a theater lobby with a coffee shop.
google avatar

Yelp
A wonderful little spot just a hop away from Union Square. Coffee menu rocks and my cortado with oat was solid. Plenty of good seating, with restrooms that can accommodate a lot of people. Friendly staff too. Right in the heart of NYU so I'm sure it can get busy here, but this Saturday it was not too crowded at 2:00 PM. A great mellow place to hang for an hour or longer with friends. Will return!

Yelp
a cold January winter day requires hot coffee. got a drip coffee to go. the coffee was okay / good. the service kinda meh. for some reason operating procedure is you can't pour your own simple syrup (weird), you have to request sugar packets like they aren't out for coffee drinkers (weird), same thing for milk / creamer (weird), there is no clear area to stir in your sugar etc in, and i don't think this place had stirrers. the space isn't small as it is crammed with people on laptops, iPads, etc. so there is room for a coffee condiment station. don't get it. like the prices, here, are pretty normal for nyc so they can afford to not hoard things people typically use to sweeten etc their coffee and allow them to do this freely. anyway, MEH.
google avatar

Kellianne H.

Yelp
Cute place between 3rd and 4th on 13th Street. Quick service, even with a long line out the door. They had 1 barista and 1 person running the register/doing everything else. After reading the other comments I can see how some people feel how the staff aren't laying out a red carpet and offering champagne BUT guess what...it's a coffee shop - not an awards show. They're there to give you your coffee and send you on your day. They also follow current NYC rules for dining inside (vaccine check + ID verification). And the best part is that if you're drinking your coffee in-house, they serve it in a real mug! Oh a latte in a coffee mug hits different then in a paper cup.
google avatar

Gab G.

Yelp
Took five-plus years for me to return to this spot, but it's still excellent. My nonfat iced latte was great, and they've managed to keep their prices around the same!
google avatar

Jonique G.

Yelp
It's wheelchair accessible!!! This is a big deal for me since my wife uses a wheelchair and there were MULTIPLE wheelchairs inside the cafe! The staff is really nice, too. P.S. to access the CSC theater, go through here.
google avatar

Dominik D.

Yelp
https://gothammag.com/best-coffee-nyc This spot was named one of the best coffee places in the city. It's very closed down right now, you can only walk up to the outside entrance and they only hand the drink by a small table near an emergency exit.

Yummy K.

Yelp
This a nice, chill coffee place. The employees were really friendly when taking our order and serving us. There's not a lot of options on the menu, so I got a matcha latte which didn't really taste like anything, but it came in a mug which was awesome. I also went there more to have a place to sit and talk, which there was room for, so I don't really mind the drink quality that much. It doesn't visually have the cozy coffee shop vibe because the tables are just placed in an empty space, but I got that vibe from the real coffee mugs and the good service.
google avatar

Shirley G.

Yelp
I got a hot latte with whole milk and maple added. It was very solid. Temperature of my drink was great. Not too bitter. Friendly staff. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Cute decor inside. I didn't see any obvious outlets but if your laptop is charged, I would definitely come here to do some work.
google avatar

Yelp
When in NYC, you can order a cup of joe at every corner (literally). When my wife and I visit, we go on a coffee tour. We split one latte at 4-5 coffee shops in one neighborhood within a 1-2 time span. Everyman Espresso was one of the best we found in its area. Here's why: 1) Latte: They use quality beans and froth the milk making their latte very creamy. It almost doesn't need sugar. 2) Owner: Hugh Jackman owns it. Enough said. 3) Space: It's large for NYC and has plenty of seating including a bench out front. It used to be an old theater and the movie posters remain on the walls as decorations.
google avatar

Sarah K.

Yelp
I had higher hopes for this place. The space is huge for a coffee shop but the coffee was just eh. I got an iced latte and it tasted very watered down, also the cup is tiny for how much you pay - $8 w/ tip. Probably wouldn't go again

Chris C.

Yelp
The code for a free coffee on the site doesn't work anymore. Here's one that does on the RDY app: JZQ38 https://rdy.app.link/UiPIiaKk8wb After downloading the app, enter this code in the settings screen: JZQ38

Yelp
Everyman Espresso is one of the things I'll miss the most about New York. The Espresso was a real treasure. In fact, Everyman Espresso opened my eyes to how good Espresso is when I was in college. For this I owe them much. Some people have been complaining about the employees. They are here to give you amazing coffee not to be your friend. That being said they aren't rude and since things have been slower during the pandemic they have been taking more time to chat. Just don't expect them to talk if things are busy.
google avatar

Sarah G.

Yelp
Happening to be in the area and in desperate need of coffee, I grabbed a Small Coffee and a mouth watering Cheddar Jalapeño Scone at Everyman. Coffee was superb and the Scone was packed with Cheddar with a nice kick to it; thanks to the Jalapeño! I love the relaxed causal atmosphere and feel the name "Everyman" really does fit the vibe. With countless Starbucks taking over, it's nice to have a real deal coffee shop in the area.
google avatar

Liz C.

Yelp
***Decent selection, Quick service, Pricey*** There's a good amount of seating. But it's connected to a theater so there's a lot of people that come in and out. Barista was very friendly and quick to make the drink. It is a bit pricey for the amount of coffee you're getting.
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
7 V:5 Got the Vietnamese coffee latte, thought it was very good, a little pricey at $6 (I think), would return
google avatar

Ray Ray S.

Yelp
Counter culture beans, well-made, come one come all! Mocha I had here and then sat at the table for the next 12 hours, just cuz they're cool like that.
google avatar

Alex F.

Yelp
This business won't serve people who are fully vaccinated with *just* the Janssen shot. They are making up discriminatory business practices saying "the law changed" when it didn't. Avoid at all costs. Would get zero stars but Yelp won't let me post a review without at least 1 star.
google avatar

Maria S.

Yelp
Cute spot! The food is good and the coffee is strong. Seating is a bit hard, as the benches don't have any tables so you have to either hold your food or put it on the bench which takes up space that someone else could use to sit.
google avatar

Josh K.

Yelp
Ordered a medium drip coffee. Medium cup is the size of a small anywhere else you go. Tiny cup of coffee for $3.75. Definitely not worth it.
google avatar

Emily R.

Yelp
Best coffee in NYC. Seriously they put so much love into their coffee Friendliest staff and such a good vibe. I often work or read at Everyman and find it so welcoming.
google avatar

Nina K.

Yelp
VEGAN OPTIONS - Yes. Almond and Oat milk (Oatly) Stopped in for a cappuccino with oat milk. The drink was very well made - good foam and overall consistency. They use Counter Culture beans. The flavour of the espresso was delicious - there's barely any need for sugar. The alternative milk was $0.75 extra, which is a bit steep. But since the drink was made well I will come back when I'm in the area.

Honest M.

Yelp
Super nice staff - Only problem is the coffee is truly lousy - and for some reason they won't open the place up so it's like the height of the pandemic here - dog friendly
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
I stumbled in here after another great meal at Ssambar. Ordered an espresso and stood at the counter talking and drinking it. Not only was it a very delicious and well pulled shot but from the conversation, I think this place gets it, as I define that. My shot was Columbian which often, can go badly. This one though had a ton of nuance and none of that "diner" coffee flavor that many Columbian beans end up with as a result of their mistreatment. What we talked about was the benefit of lighter roasted beans for espresso. Not only talked about, but agreed upon. No, no, no, charcoal coffee for me.
google avatar

Alana N.

Yelp
I stopped in here for a coffee on this cold day and it was so nice and warm in here in more than one way. You can tell it's a neighborhood place with its regulars. Everyone is extremely friendly and the coffee is great to boot! So happy I decided to try it. Heartwarming experience really. Highly recommend!

Luke W.

Yelp
Tried this place after feeling sleepy in Union square. Great cortado and a friendly barista!
google avatar

Pom K.

Yelp
Coffee has a burnt taste and smell which is not my style. Place is bright and roomie. There's 4 tables which mostly occupied but there's more bench to sit.
google avatar

Joseph G.

Yelp
Average at best. I asked for a cappuccino and got a wet latte. I was expecting better.
google avatar

Connie T.

Yelp
Yes, it is very spacious inside and good for a quick cup of coffee or if you were meeting up with someone to chat. However, if you plan on bringing a laptop there to try to get some work done, I would advise you to go elsewhere. The internet was super slow. I felt like I travelled back in time to the days where people used to use dial up and had to wait for a webpage to load. Also, there are barely any plugs anywhere to charge your electronics. The coffee was okay, nothing to rave about. I wouldn't come back, unless other coffee shops around the area had no seating available.
google avatar

Karen C.

Yelp
Consistently great coffee, super smooth espresso, friendly staff, but just a tad more expensive than most coffee shops. I've had the cortado - super strong flavor, a cappuccino - super smooth and creamy, and the BEST iced americano with a splash of soy milk I've ever had. Didn't know it was possible for pure americanos to taste so chocolate-y and caramel-y!! That's when you know their espresso is A++++

Aria W.

Yelp
I walked up and the owner/manager was too busy chatting with someone to help me and rudely told me to wait (despite the fact I was the only customer). No visible menu or prices (would be easy to tape these to the plastic pane) and was not told how much my drink was at any point before they asked me to pay. They then asked to leave a tip, I said no because of the above rudeness and they didn't tell me how much the drink was so I had no frame of reference for tipping. I paid, then a minute or two later the owner/manager then came out from behind the bar and accosted me about not leaving a tip, calling it "unacceptable" and wanting to "have a conversation". I saw this was going nowhere good and really just wanted my coffee, so I paid the extra $0.50. I understand this is a difficult time and wages are dependent on tips, but there are many better ways to approach this. For example, they could raise prices slightly or put up a little sign that says "please tip your barista!" with some info about why it is important. Less confrontational methods would have been a lot more effective. If I had seen a sign like that, I would have tipped even though the service was not good because I completely understand with the financial impact COVID has had. I think it's really important to support small businesses right now. I will still be doing so, just not this one.
google avatar

Liz S.

Yelp
One of our travel goals is always to sample coffee from third wave espresso venues in the new locations we travel to. My husband is a fan of straight espresso, while I usually go for a specialty latte or a nut milk latter. At Everyman, we were both satisfied! We both enjoyed our drinks a good deal, and the environment could not have been more welcoming. The name itself says it all: this espresso is for every man (they even had a sign outside that said, in giant block lettering, that they also served BLACK COFFEE). The baristas were cheerful and welcoming, and you could tell that several of the patrons inside were regulars. Definitely a comforting spot to pop into on a cold morning in the East Village.
google avatar

Elaine H.

Yelp
Another something-man! I have been to mad man, laughing man, and this time, Everyman! This damn-fine (as they called themselves, fair enough) coffee shop is unlike many of its neighbors in this area, that it offers a large space to really sit down and sip their espresso, one thing I'm longing for after a morning run from the west coast. At the same time, similar to everyone else, Everyman does provide a cool setup inside the coffee shop and a well-executed shot of cappuccino! Well done! Those donut lovers, good news! They carry the signature donuts from the renown car wash place Underwest, so no need to travel all the way. Their huge croissant also looks so attractive, have to give a try on my next visit. Everyman espresso, think every woman also enjoys it!
google avatar

Yelp
It's a nice big cafe with lots of tables. It's got a young trendy vibe. It can get crowded at times. We had lattes and they were just OK. Both lattes tasted different. There were no consistency between two cups. They don't have milk out. They ask you if you want sugar added to your latte. They use counter culture beans.
google avatar

Yelp
I would consider this one of the best lattes I've ever had. It was just so creamy. Maybe it was an effect of my first foray into oat milk but I just thought it was super good. They also have wifi, which was randomly fast for certain things but slow for others.
google avatar

Ray W.

Yelp
Blah, nothing too exciting here. They poured too much milk in the iced latte and the espresso taste was either masked by the milk or simply was just not that flavorful. I will not be returning for another drink.
google avatar

Ariella G.

Yelp
Everyman Espresso is a great alternative to the commercial coffee chains that dominate Union Square. I came here to catch up with a friend and it had all the qualities of a great coffee shop: reasonably cozy, solid coffee, lots of seating. This isn't the "cutest" coffee place, if that matters to you (no couches or bougie decor) however it gets the job done and is a solid go-to when you're not in the mood for Starbucks, LPQ, or Think (which, for me, is always!) Next time, I'll try the pastries!
google avatar

Jenna S.

Yelp
There is a theater in this coffee shop which will have you question whether you are at a coffee shop to enjoy a cup of coffee and have a good conversation with a friend or if you are sitting in the lounge of a theater. To me it felt like the latter. Theater was the main attraction and I felt weird sitting there with my coffee. The place was packed! The crowds of people waiting in such a tiny space left no room for personal space. The cafe was unbearably loud with baristas yelling out orders, theater staff yelling out instructions, and loud chatters among the waiting crowd. The cafe itself is poorly decorated with awkward seating arrangements. The drinks are over priced too($4.50 for americano and average of $4 for tea). I definitely wouldn't come here to meet up friends or work/study. Coffee is decent so maybe take out coffee if overpriced coffee is your thing. Sadly, there are too many other coffee shops around here with quality coffee and relaxing atmosphere to come back to this place.
google avatar

Tina W.

Yelp
Everyman has a right to drink coffee. Well, what about women? JK. This place runs my males for sure, the staffs I saw that day were all males who are really good at making latte art. Location: Everyman Espresso is close to NYU resident hall and Parsons and of course, Union square. So it is always crowded and crowded. Normally, I got no place to sit when I was there but today I was lucky enough to grab a seat and sat for almost 30 mins before the crowded came in. If you want to study here, forget about it. It's really loud and crowded. If you want to hangout with friends, this is your place. The small table shortens your distance with your old friends or potential lovers. There is also a theater inside this coffee shop. So if you see people are in line, some reasons are that they 're waiting to get to see a show instead of getting a coffee. Coffee: I had flat white. And surprisingly, it was good. In addition, their latte arts are amazingly elegant. The only complain is that it is so crowded. UGH, I barely want to spend a minute if this place is packed!

Yelp
Coffee is amazing. Quick and friendly service. Can we dim the lights just a little bit though?

Yelp
Great coffee. Excellent service. True Belgian Waffles. Comfy atmosphere. Dine in (they check for vax, thanks!) w Real cups.

Yelp
Great place to go for a good cup o'joe. (yea....meant to do that). Very spacious, laid back atmosphere. Nobody will rush you out...you can chill, do work, meet a friend or just sip your coffee and stare into space. The decor is bare bones; concrete floor and there are only a few tables (but there's plenty of space for more). The guys behind the counter were super friendly and cool. The treats looked really good, too...there were a few fancy looking donuts and other pastries that I'm sure I would have enjoyed....maybe next time.
