This no‑frills gas‑station smokehouse turns out deeply smoky pork, ribs, and coconut cream pie. After rebuilding its smokehouse in 2023, it’s back to full strength. Voted Best BBQ in 2024 by local readers and covered by community news.

First time coming here and man was it good. The pulled pork is fantastic and you can smell the meats cooking on the pit as you pull into the parking lot. My husband said the baked beans and coleslaw were really good as well as the Mexican corn bread. Will definitely be returning here again.

Lucille W.

Google
Heard rumors about their BBQ and I finally stopped in. The BBQ is absolutely awesome!! Got some corn nuggest, delicious!! I also got a bacon biscuit, and I must say it did not disappoint!! I will be stopping in again!! I also want to mention all the staff was very friendly, too!

Ronnie M.

Google
I went in last night and picked up a whole slab of spare ribs and I must say they were terrible! Not one hint of smoke had a very bad taste hard to explain! Probably the worst ribs I’ve every had !!!!!!

Kenny R.

Google
16.70 for a dried chicken plate with 2 sides n sweet tea. They put their meat in a gas station glass container n sits. Dry. Tea was good.

Dominick P.

Google
I love some good BBQ ribs and smoke my own. That said the very first thing that tells me if it is a real BBQ joint is the ribs. The ribs were moist BUT that’s where the “good” stops. A rookie mistake….they left the membrane on them…. Seemed as there was no rub put on them as they were very bland nor was there a smoke ring….on it or the pulled pork. Short of it save your money and hit up Freddy’s.

Once you get past the fact that, yes, it really IS a gas station, the takeout food is actually pretty good. We missed out on the chicken and ribs (which had sold out by early afternoon), so we grabbed a bunch of pulled pork, along with some potato salad and cole slaw. The pork was good, not great, but the sides (potato salad and cole slaw) were delicious. Definitely try the hot vinegar. Also, we devoured two of their pies (cherry and fudge).

Google
Talk about a hole in the wall BBQ joint. Best BBQ in Montgomery Co to say the least. Great value for what you getting. Don't doubt it, just try it.

This place is literally a tiny gas station and convenience store, with a small restaurant tucked away in the back, left of the store. It is quite run-down and looks like it's never been remodeled or updated since the day they opened. Facing the registers, on the left hand side, is a counter where you can order their bbq by the pound (chicken is served only on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays). They also have a refrigerated case to purchase their coleslaw, potato salad, pies, etc.. I assume you're able to order anything off of their restaurant menu at the to go counter as well. If you prefer to have your meal there, head towards the back left side of the store where they have a small restaurant seating area. I opted to purchase the pulled pork by the pound, grab a couple of coleslaw containers, and a bag of buns to make the pulled pork sandwiches at home (don't forget the bbq sauce!) I ordered 1.5 pounds of pulled pork, 1 large bbq sauce, 2 large containers of coleslaw, and a package of 12 buns which came out to $25. My only complaint is the packaging they put the meat in. The juices basically disintegrated the paper bowl it was placed in (wrapped with plastic wrap) and had I not gone home to place it in a bowl, it would've gotten all over the place. Now the taste? Absolutely fantastic! The coleslaw was a bit too runny and vinegary for the teenagers liking, but I enjoyed it. The coleslaw provided a nice sweet and sour balance with the bbq pork. Parking is limited but I'm sure with the quick turnarounds, you won't have to wait long for a space. And the establishment is wheelchair accessible.

Yelp
It's been 10yrs since I first stepped foot here and still recall the smell of bbq that makes your heart race and your mouth salivate. They continue to do an amazing job now with a whole slew of smokers in the back where I once sat to enjoy Tennessee BBQ. My only suggestion is to bring back the covered seating since sitting on a damp picnic table to enjoy BBQ is not an ideal experience. Price: Very reasonable Sides: wow. Delicious. Parking: ample parking

Yelp
Got BBQ, beans, slaw, potato salad and chocolate pie on August 17. Out of the 8 of us who ate, 7 have explosive runs.
google avatar

Carly M.

Yelp
Still a cute place to stop to get barbecue. I purchased a coconut pie for a family get together and the family said it was delicious. The service is prompt and they have Apple Pay now.

Yelp
Went years ago but still talk about it. Lo key but great food. We went after seeing a review on Yelp. Loved it
google avatar

Jerry F.

Yelp
Excellent BBQ and great friendly staff that are eager to help. I wish they had some tables.

Yelp
Well went and got BBQ here. We used to get BBQ all the time. It was always the BEST but ever since they rebuilt the smoke house it's not as good. I know the new building in the back has nothing to do with the cooking. But who ever they have cooking the BBQ just ain't got what it takes. The BBQ tastes like it was at least 2 days old. It was dryer than dry and no flavor at all. The pies aren't even as good any more. Spent just about $40 on BBQ, A pie, Chips and Buns and it wasn't worth no where near that. It was so bad my dog even turned his nose up at it and he'll eat anything. Only good things can say is the people working there were very friendly. Guess will be looking for a different BBQ place or just make it ourselves
google avatar

Dreama J.

Yelp
I will say this is the Best BBQ I ever had. They smoke it here and it's always well chopped, so Delicious Fast and friendly service

Yelp
Very good service and they have great food. Maybe the best place in Clarksville to get BBQ. And their jalapeno poppers are wonderful.

Dee R.

Yelp
This place is racist. I don't mean I think they were a little rude to me racist. I mean racist, racist. I pulled up at the same time as an elderly white couple. They went in, I sat in my minivan to respond to some work texts. Took less than 10 minutes. I hopped out to head inside. That's when a very thin white woman came dashing out of the store. This was when the elderly couple were on their way out. She then proceeded to tell me that they were out of food and it was best for me to leave. I looked at the couple that obviously was carrying a bag of take out and said,"out of food?" In case you have never been there, the bbq place is behind the convenient store. I have been to excell bbq many times with my family and this was the first time I had experienced this. Anyway, she proclaims that there is no more food and that I need to leave. She didn't know if I had come there to buy cigarettes, beer, chips, or the bbq. But they were out of food. I called my husband and spoke to him about my experience. We used to really enjoy their bbq. He said he would stop by there the next day, he wanted to see for himself. The next day, he goes. He then tells me we are to never go there again. He said he got out of the car and a skinny brown haired woman ran out of the store and wouldn't let him in. That when he tried to ignore her, she refused to let him in the store, wouldn't let him open the door. This is Tn so I'm sure this will fall on deaf ears. Ya'll enjoy your racist ass bbq. I know that's just how you like it. May you all have the life you deserve:) When I drive by and see you there, I'll know what you're about. So ty, in advance

Yelp
It's so delicious. We have been coming here for years and buying it for family gatherings as well. Super delicious barbecue, friendly staff, working smoke house on site. And today we tried the highly acclaimed pie. All good, all well located near Clarksville. I recommend, but obviously I'm not a southerner. I do like smoked meats, however! Give it a try!
google avatar

Dawn M.

Yelp
Don't let the gas station set up fool you! Delicious bbq smoked right on site. Sides are house made and delicious with friendly service.

Sonar T.

Yelp
Food is amazing as always but the older white guy who works later in the day with the younger man has an attitude off the start of talking to him since I've started coming later in the day. Never had the issue earlier in the day. I was being polite the entire time but it just seemed like he didn't like me right off the bat for whatever reason and it shows in his responses. It felt like he didn't even want to serve me.
google avatar

Karen M.

Yelp
Pulled pork BBQ is good , but their prices really went up after they re-built. BBQ had a lil too much fat/grissel in it.
google avatar

Jill S.

Yelp
Best bbq in Clarksville. A total dive gas station with a local gem tucked away inside. Not much to discuss on sides as they seem to be all commercially prepared and not made in-house, so I recommend skipping those...but you can't go wrong with their bbq, especially the pork . Don't let the visual appearance of the location deter you!
google avatar

Mary L.

Yelp
My husband and I wondered why the parking lot of the local gas station was overflowing with cars. Now we know. Best. Bbq. EVER. Hands down. Don't go anywhere else.

Mary S.

Yelp
Their BBQ never disappoints! Delish! Friendly customer service and always plenty of meat on hand.

Lucy H.

Yelp
I would not recommend this business to anyone. They are very unprofessional and allow their employees while on the clock to threaten customers. 0/10 recommend

Yelp
Few things you need to know before I launch into why I only gave it 2 stars: 1) I ordered from them at the BBQ Bash in Clarksville and it they only had their food truck, so they didn't necessarily have "home field advantage" 2) they were admittedly overwhelmed because a lot of people were ordering and they couldn't keep up with them 3) me and the wife both ordered double baked beans for our sides...and neither of us received even one side of baked beans 4) ...well, that's it,...those are the only three reasons I can think of. The BBQ was underwhelming and wanted so badly for it to be delicious?! Ugh...me and the wife had high hopes of hanging out in the local scene and enjoying some good ole southern BBQ, but were really let down:( They were sweet people, but are not apt to working with high order volume. The young folks that worked up front were taking orders, but didn't seem to be concerned with the output of those orders, as if to say "that's not MY problem if you can't keep up with the orders-I'm here to work the register and that's it"-type of mentality. Anyway, we probably just caught them on an "off" day, so I'll give them one more repeat business at their place of business, but I'm not in any rush. I appreciate the effort Excell, but y'all gotta work on pace, everybody pitching in on all tasks, and accuracy of orders regardless of customer/order volume.

Yelp
Best barbecue in town. Doesn't look like much backwoods store that sells gas. But you can go inside and eat. Very clean and very good.
google avatar

Tracy K.

Yelp
Best damned BBQ in 500 miles. Seriously. This review requires NO MORE. Yeah. It's in a gas station. Smoke house is in the back. Eat there. You will never eat any other BBQ.
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
Feels like you are in the wrong place because it's inside the gas station and you eat on a picnic table outside on the grass. The meat serving is enough for four sandwiches. Get the beans and potato salad as your two sides. What great taste and value for the money!
google avatar

Nadine N.

Yelp
We visited Family in Clarksville. They ordered pulled pork for us! It was beyond delish! This will be the "traditional meal" when we return home to visit! Thank you for providing outstanding quality food... we can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Shana D.

Yelp
I'm actually surprised that this place has so many good reviews. I have lived in Kansas, Texas, South Carolina and now Tennessee. So, I've had BBQ from all the main BBQ hubs, and this place was awful in my opinion. Maybe they are known and/or specializes in a specific BBQ type, but the chicken isn't it. It lacked flavor, like really, lacked flavor. The BBQ sauce was flavorless as well. All I seem to know is that it's certainly not a place I would recommend and/or go back to. There are also severally different "day" menus posted, which is also a bit confusing. It seems a bit hole-in-the wall like (in the back of a gas station), which I usually find to be good even though the appearance is not that great. However, Im giving 2 stars because the people are nice and the sides were ok.
google avatar

Stuart S.

Yelp
Great bbq and a very pleasant cultural experience that everyone should have at least 4 or 5 times a month! BBQ that would make Ed McNeese smile upon us all!
google avatar

Rachel D.

Yelp
Don't let the exterior, or interior for that matter, deceive you. Excellent Bar-B-Q is hands down the best bbq in Clarksville. Plan on getting it to go, take it home, and enjoy!

Scott F.

Yelp
Good, down home Bar-B-Q. You'll see the smoke house behind the gas station as you pull up and you know it's going to be good. Fried okra and pies are delicious.
google avatar

Darcie H.

Yelp
Do not waste your time trying to find this place! Bad service and poor barbecue. Walked in after reading reviews on Yelp. Had been driving for 11 hours and wanted good barbecue as promised by other reviewers. We couldn't tell from the outside if we were even the correct place when we pulled in. When we walked in an unfriendly, border line rude, young man stood there looking at us. I said we were looking for barbecue. He said order here. There was no menu and one was not offered to us. We were told a handful of food options. We couldn't see a place to sit down and eat and no one told us that there was one in the back which we found on our own after ordering the food to go. We ordered two pulled pork sandwiches which were dry, we asked for sauce but there was not much to be seen, fries were soggy, baked beans were cold and blah and the potato salad was inedible.

Brenda P.

Yelp
Don't let the exterior (or interior) fool you. This is the best BBQ in Montgomery county. The Carmel pie will make you slap your Momma and your Auntie.

Linda B.

Yelp
Excell Bar-B-Q is always fresh hot and yummy! Their ribs, salads, beans, and pies are fantastic! The place is old, but the food is fresh and well worth the stop to pick-up some carry out. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water!
google avatar

Zaneta Z.

Yelp
Great pulled pork and ribs! Chicken tends to be a bit dry. Super convenient location for those of us who live off of and commute on TN 12. They also have quite a selection of other road trip type snacks in the aisles left of the door. Definitely worth checking out!
google avatar

Ashley W.

Yelp
Pulled pork is ALWAYS on-point! Ribs are amazing and the catfish, yum!! My favorite bbq place!

Bernadette B.

Yelp
Little Gas Station with some of the best bbq ever!!! Had the BBQ (which is like a shredded pork) the ribs and smoked chicken fantastic!
google avatar

Bonnie B.

Yelp
This is my favorite place, this is your favorite place, this is everyone's favorite place! Every time someone comes to visit me from out of town I bring them here. I start by saying look... imma take you to a gas station in the sticks, but give it a chance, and every one of them has been so happy! I can never look at bbq the same now they have me spoilt. Just do yourself a favor and go here! Remember there's a sit down restaurant in the back.
google avatar

Violet R.

Yelp
Kinda dirty, no... dirty....and not worth the ride off the highway. Meat had peculiar chemical taste. Ribs are baked then smoked for a bit... maybe....sides average..... i think they just use liquid smoke not actually smoke it. My friend had pulled pork platter w mac salad - didn't like it.
google avatar

Reed K.

Yelp
First off, the only reason I give this place a 4-Star rating is due to the limited and unmarked parking. When it comes to food, this has to be the best BBQ I have had since leaving North Carolina. The family like experience we received from the waitress and servers was amazing. I love how cozy the restaurant/market is. The smoke house out back gives the real BBQ experience. It's sill too hot to eat outside, but there is plenty of seating inside. I will be coming back here frequently for years to come!!
google avatar

Celia M.

Yelp
Still love popping in here for BBQ and the staff is always helpful! They are still doing it right, all these years!

Tyler J.

Yelp
Best BBQ in Clarksville hands down. Don't let the apprentice fool you. Juicy pulled pork and the ribs are pretty darn good too.
google avatar

Jason R.

Yelp
Stopped in at closing time and the staff went out of their way to make us sandwiches and kids sliders to go. For less than 17 bucks our family of five had a FANTASTIC meal. Definitely not a traditional restaurant but the food is well worth it!
google avatar

Alyssa M.

Yelp
I wish this place was closer because I'd go all the time. It's small but man I love BBQ! It was worth the drive and I'll definitely be back soon!!
google avatar

David A.

Yelp
The reason i give this a 3 is because of the pulld pork and it is good bbq just good no smoke ring or bark of any kind kind of bland moist but thats it and the staff is great and friendly so for thoes i can oly give this place a 3 was hoping to give it higher but id be would be truthful tone of people love this place witch it find i just did not. Lets talk about the other food the mac and cheese was one of the worse it looked good but so dose plastic food it was like eating noodle in cheese flavored water i would say light cheese flavor water i dont want to sound like a jerk but it was that bad next the white beans had no flavor at all and a little under done just the taste of beans thats it no salt and peper flavor just beans next the corn bread it was old cold and starting to stale up it was good size and thick but yeah old. Next the bbq sauce they have two types vinger and sweet the sweet was good just taste like store bought the vinegar home sauce was like getting slap in the face with vinegar thats all i could taste yeah it just wasnt as good as other people have told me will i try it once more you know i will just for the people that swear by it yeah i hope it was an off day it did have some promise mainly the pulled pork
google avatar

Mary Y.

Yelp
Best schnitzel around!!!!! Every Tuesday until 6pm!!! A must try even if not local!!!!
google avatar

Sarah D.

Yelp
It's so cheep !! So good and such large portions! You'll be more than full for a 6 dollar bbq plate !

Dr P.

Yelp
We feel like Excell Bar-B-Q has the best TN style pulled pork pit barbecue in the area. Unlike a lot of places, they don't include the fat trimmings in their meat, so the product is not greasy at all. Their sides are great, too! I love the working old fashioned country store environment, too. Reminds me of my uncle's roadside store when I was a kid. Definitely worth a visit.
google avatar

Steve W.

Yelp
My wife's grandfather used to live in Clarksville, and for the last 10 years I have heard her rave about the Bar-be-que he had when she went to visit. No matter where we tried it never measured up to what she remembered as true BBQ. Well recently while visiting Nashville we decided to make the trip out and pick some up for ourselves. It is AMAZING! The BBQ is full of flavor with or without the sauce! We got ours to go and brought it home - even re heated it still tastes wonderful. I now know why the memory of this food stuck with her for so long. Like other reviewers have said - if you want a "fine Dining" experience, or are turned off by a restaurant in a gas station then go somewhere else. But if you want great BBQ this is the place.

Yelp
As a native Tennessean from the Sango community, I have eaten lots of barbecue over the years, and as I've traveled and lived in different parts of the country, I've sampled the various styles of barbecue throughout the South, the Mid-West, and the East Coast. I no longer live in Tennessee, but I'm back there visiting family very regularly, three to four times a year and of course family get-togethers and meals are always part of the plan. I'm happy to be able to say that Excell's barbecue and sides are "as good as it gets" and I make it a point to stop by and pick some up for our family every time I'm visiting Tennessee. I think both the pork and the chicken are excellent; the pork barbecue is juicy with a wonderful barbecue flavor without being over-cooked, the chicken is crisp, moist and fall-off-the-bone succulent.. I prefer mine with Excell's hot sauce but other family members love have "just plain BBQ!" Excell offers the traditional "sides" of cole slaw, baked beans, and potato salad, and each of these are delicious. Their whole pies, sold both whole and by the slice, are wonderful too and a real Southern cooking treat. In fact we often buy Excell in 10 pound orders for our larger family gatherings. Because I no longer live in Tennessee, I can only comment on their carry-out service, I have never eat-in at Excell but a small side dining room is available. But we've never had any problems with our orders, either large or small, and the folks who work there have always been friendly and helpful.

Yelp
The barbecue in this place is so dang good, people will pile in here every day and buy every scrap they can serve up without regard to the appearance of the place or the dead flies lining the window sills. Nothing else matters-- NOTHING-- the barbecue is THAT GOOD. If you need your barbecue served by sweet-tempered ladies, in a pristine dining room, go somewhere else, but don't plan on it being around for very long. Excell Barbecue (formerly Big Daddy's) has been around a LONG time, despite dirty floors and surly service, because if you want the absolute best barbecue, this is where you get it. FYI: If you feel the need to visit the restroom, don't. Wait till you get home.

Kelsey A.

Yelp
I just don't get it... when we moved to Clarksville this place was recommended to us. Where we are from, there are several good bbq places so we were excited to see what Clarksville has to offer. Good bbq is often found in hole-in-the-wall places, so I wasn't shocked by this. During our actual dining experience (we ate in), the staff kept talking about some wound on this woman's back that needed to be drained or something and it was so gross! Then the food itself was not great. The bbq was ok, the beans tasted like they were from a can, and the slaw was gross.

Leeanne D.

Yelp
Yummmmmmmm clean and fast you make want to bring some Kleenex cause it is finger licking goooood
google avatar

George L.

Yelp
Yes, it's in an old gas station/convenience store. But they really know how to do pulled pork barbecue. The locals know to come here for good smoked BBQ. The sides are nothing special, but they aren't bad either.
