Exiles Bar - Review - U Street - Washington DC - The Infatuation

"Exiles sits at the midpoint between the Dupont, Adams Morgan, and 14th & U St neighborhoods, a location that’s easy to get to and far enough from nightlife epicenters to throw stray drunks off its scent. Inside there are two floors and a patio offering modest tavern vibes with exposed brick walls, wooden furniture, and little decoration besides the scarves, flags, and pennants of the teams the bar supports. Exiles is an official watch bar for Penn State, the Buffalo Bills, the UNC Tar Heels, and Liverpool FC, and also shines as a reliable watering hole to watch any local or nationally broadcast match. The kitchen serves pub staples including burgers, wings, and flatbreads, but the star of the menu is the Irish chicken curry served over rice and chips (fries). Order at the bar or take one to-go to rescue you from your hangover the next day. On weekends and big game nights the place fills wall-to-wall. So if inside is too crowded, join the smokers out back and make friends with whoever's playing the ring and hook game while you warm up under a wall heater." - Tom Rose

Came out to DC for a quick bite after a day out with a friend. The atmosphere is lively and the food is top tier for a bar. I'd definitely recommend for anyone in the area. The service was pretty quick and drink options are plenty. They have an outdoor patio with fans and plenty of space along with an upstairs area. Parking can be an issue. Uber if you can.

Google
Good food. Had the chicken and black bean nachos, the chips were perfectly delicate and there was a good smothering of toppings. The cheese curds were good, no squeek but very tasty and a good portion. Waiting on the fish and chips now but have high expectations. Staff has been wonderful, helpful, cheerful, and welcoming

Google
Exiles Bar is that chill, no-frills neighborhood spot that knows how to bring the energy. This is a sports bar through and through, and it proudly cheers on Liverpool, Penn State, the Buffalo Bills, and UNC. Game days are lively but welcoming, with plenty of passionate fans and a fun atmosphere that makes you want to stick around. The staff are friendly and quick, even when the place is packed. The food is genuinely good, not just something to tide you over between drinks. And speaking of drinks, do yourself a favor and try Dan’s Orange Crush or the spiked hot chocolate when it’s cold out. Both are crowd favorites and absolutely hit the spot. There are multiple spaces to enjoy. The upstairs area is often rented out for private parties, and the outdoor back area is perfect when the weather’s nice. Whether you’re here to catch a match, cheer on your team, or sip something fun with friends, Exiles Bar always delivers.

Google
Good place to hang out and watch the game. Great wings and other snacks. The wings were about as good as anything I've had outside of Buffalo. Don't forget the bucket of Blue to wash them down.

Nicholas F.

Google
Lost a brown scarf recently, and I thought it might be at Exiles. There’s no customer service number to call (absurd), so I sent an email. They haven’t bothered to respond. For the prices they charge, that’s unacceptable.

Justin N.

Google
I have been going to exiles for years. They have always been welcoming and fun. The food is delicious and the bathrooms are interesting. It's a great place to go for a date or just to hang out.

Andrew F.

Google
Great dive vibes with a back patio that has a TV! Came for a Liverpool game on a Monday at 3PM and it was PACKED. Loved the atmosphere and the bartenders kept the drinks flowing

Scot A.

Google
The best fun and friendly staff make you feel like friends and neighbors. The patrons are some of the best community in DC. The bar has their own brew that's fantastic and their food specials constantly changing and great as is their standard bar fare.

Yelp
Horrible service and not lgbt friendly. No one was even in there. I would have never made the trip here had I know the flag was up just for looks.

Yelp
Stopped here while walking to Howard university from Adams Morgan area for a conference. Got an amazing French 75 from the Irish bartender!! He was so nice!! Place was crowded and loud with great music!! Highly recommend for fun vibe and great drinks!!
google avatar

Pete K.

Yelp
If Tiesto was Irish and was a bar, he would be Exiles. My favorite neighborhood bar. Bills, Liverpool, belters...has it all!
google avatar

Keith M.

Yelp
Do not host an event here. Cancelled a 60+ party event 4 days beforehand even though we signed a contact 8 weeks prior. Some of my favorite bartenders in the city work here but sadly the owners are not as great.
google avatar

Crystal G.

Yelp
Great local bar with friendly staff. We stopped in when we were visiting because they play the Bills games. We only had drinks but they did serve some delicious looking chicken wings that everyone was eating during the game. I enjoyed some local made craft seltzer. Stop by for a drink if you are in the area.
google avatar

Rajit S.

Yelp
Great staff, good food and drinks. Bar was laid back when we went (~6p on a Monday). Would definitely go again

Yelp
This was the first stop and the checkin point for the Whiskey Walk! We were so excited for our adventure to begin ! When you walk in Exiles (this year) we were on the first floor- it's set up like a cute little bar. The service was great! The gentleman that served us our whiskey and food was cool !! The food was delish! That was my first time having an Irish curry and they did a great job! It had chicken, veggies, white rice, and fries- just enough to fill us up before the walk (this is an important step of the walk)! We tried to whiskeys: Jameson and Powers! The bar tender gave me a chaser because I couldn't drink the whiskey straight! With the chaser I thought they were good! Babe liked them with out :) !!

Yelp
Amazing bar! Always here to watch the Buffalo bills: overall amazing service and a great atmosphere. Would recommend their pesto flatbread for sure! Love everything here - Paul is the amazing bartender and really gets to know everyone. We love him!
google avatar

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
We came to watch the a Buffalo Bills game and we got exactly what we wanted. This is a true Bills bar!!! If you're going to watch a game make sure you get there early because it gets packed! Our server was very attentive and friendly and the wings were well cooked. The old bay wings were a bit on the salty side but I enjoyed the Buffalo wings. They have the option for fries OR tater tots which is hard to find. Overall great time with great people!

Yelp
Great local bar with good food and drinks. Its a Liverpool FC bar so it's packed whenever Liverpool is playing. Its a ton of fun even if your a City fan like me. Have a great back patio with a few tvs and benches for seats. They also have the sound of the game instead of music going which is awesome. Service is always very nice and quick even when its super busy. If your sitting on back patio you have to go to the main bar to get a drink. I have had the spicy chicken sandwich and diablo burger. Both were good and reasonably priced.
google avatar

Sid M.

Yelp
Owner told me to come here to watch the unc game, so I did. When I arrived, the bouncer told Me they would play the unc game here. However, when I entered, it was all penn state fans and all the tvs were for the penn state game. And when I asked someone if there was a tv showing the unc game here, I got, as a retort, "who wants to see that game?!?" Really poor management here and lack of good communication. I hope this business fails.

stevan r.

Yelp
What a great place to watch a football game. The service is outstanding along with the food.

Samantha _.

Yelp
RACIST! Extremely disappointed. Me and my coworkers, all black women walked into the bar after work and were unfortunately greeted by a mirage of "uh ohs" and judgmental looks from the bar. It's very unfortunate because we work at a restaurant a couple blocks down and we're ready to spend our money. 0/10 RACIST

Yelp
I love going to Exiles. Their service is amazing and the ambiance is always lively and fun. Food is pretty good

Caitlin M.

Yelp
Entire staff was great and so accommodating! Best wings my husband has ever had. Ambiance was perfect for watching a soccer match. Will 100% return!

Yelp
My review is for Sunday brunch/New England Meetup. This is a cute bar on the 16th street /U street corridor. It seems to cater to Buffalo Bills fans. Which was great that during brunch they had on the Bills game vs the New England Patriots! This place has TVs everywhere so if you are into spots , this place is golden! There were 3 floors in the bar and I was on the first floor. The bar quickly got busy and the energy was pretty electric. The bottomless mimosas were an additional charge and we had the option to have orange juice and pineapple juice. I would of also appreciated cranberry juice. The mimosas were very strong so it definitely made me happy. Another positive, seem to cater to a diverse client base and the bathrooms were labeled to cater to whatever someone identifies. I wasn't impressed with brunch at all. If you are looking for all you can eat brunch , this isn't the place. You order 1 entree from a brunch pre Fixe menu. ordered the chicken and waffles. The chicken was over cooked and the waffles were pitiful. I did try the home fries and they were delicious. This bar speciality isn't Brunch. But, if you are looking for a strong mimosas this is your spot. I could come back for happy hour or dinner..

Yelp
The bartender was super nice and attentive. It has a local pub vibe and I definitely should visit again. It's open late night on weekdays unlike many other bars.

Lesly W.

Yelp
Immaculate vibes. You can count on Exiles for good drinks, great music, and normal people- none of the usual DC pretense.

Yelp
Exiles is a nice bar in a great location if you ask me. This is my second time coming to this restaurant. I got the chicken sandwich and fries and the meat on the sandwich was very juicy. The fries are okay but the tea star was the sauce I tried from a friend. It definitely took my meal to the next level. The venue was very accommodating for the special event my organization was hosting. As a matter of fact it was the third or so time we held an event there. The second floor is spacious enough for private parties. There's also an outdoor patio that's very secluded. Definitely will return. Their HH menu is also very good.

Jessica M.

Yelp
Y'all... I came here just for a friends birthday party, and the pastrami sandwich took me by surprise. My boyfriend ordered it and I ended up having half because it was the best pastrami sandwich I'd ever had. The wings were average, but the service was excellent. They were extremely attentive and even went out to the patio periodically to take our orders and make sure we were ok. The space was great for a birthday party, they were extremely chill and people were able to come in and out of the patio as they pleased. Not a huge space but enough for a 20 person get together.

Yelp
Go here to watch the Penn State game! The food is delicious but the service is slow. It was slow before the game started so no excuse. We went with our kid and had a great time but it's not kid-friendly. As usual, the bars in DC really cheat you on strength. I shouldn't have to order 4 moscow mules and I'm 120 lbs and a lightweight. So, pre-game if you can. Go for the food. We had wings... yum! and arrived right in time for brunch. The chicken & waffles was really good but I think they make that all day, it's not just a brunch item. Probably one of the best I've had in the district. Now, we just need to find more Eagles bars.
google avatar

Nick S.

Yelp
Simply put: one of the best - if not THE best - bar in DC. Exactly and everything that it should be, and nothing that it isn't, Exiles is a near-perfect pub in the States. Loyally devoted to its sports teams. Wonderfully friendly staff and patrons that have built and sustain an Exiles-based community. Rotating and varied taps. Yummy, no frills bites. Sufficient TVs and quality sound. Back patio. Two stories. Great location. And flexible to vibes: great for a Saturday afternoon at the pub watching Liverpool, relaxed on a weeknight, and energized on a Friday night. Love this spot dearly.
google avatar

Tejas S.

Yelp
Had one of my worst experiences in this country! The bartender was friendly in the beginning, but then became the most rudest and racist person I've ever seen. He told us that the bar is closing at 12 and we were leaving, just were waiting for a friend in the washroom. But he kept heckling us out and then when we were waiting outside he told me "get the fuck out before i come there". And then he escorted my friend in a weird way shoving her out of the bar. Giving 1 star because can't give -1. Was about to go to the cops to report this, but let it go.

Yelp
I accompanied my husband to Exiles recently on a Saturday night for a farewell party for one of his friends moving to Italy for an MBA program (pretty cool right?!). Turns out this has been the hangout spot for their rugby team this summer and I saw why. Upon entry it was giving dive bar/pub vibes and I worried it would be like one large never-ending frat party. I was pleasantly surprised when I was able to get a delicious lemon drop martini to kick off an entertaining night; The set up was pretty casual and the ambiance was chill. The music playing was a mix of top 40s and oldies so there was something for everyone. At one point they played the soundtrack for Mulan and everyone started singing. It was too fun. When I got hungry I ordered the chicken popper and my hubby got the tator tots. Both were good. I'll gladly return if the guys invite me to another post game outing.

Yelp
Exiles is a super friendly neighborhood bar located in NW DC not far from the U St. Corridor. They allowed our nonprofit organization to host an Open House event here on a Thursday night free of charge. The owner Brian, who was also working as the bartender, was super friendly and welcoming as soon as we arrived. They have great happy hour food and drink specials which we definitely took advantage of. They also are a Penn State and Buffalo Bills bar and host watch parties for the football games on the weekends. The place wasn't too crowded even with them hosting a democratic debate watch party. They have 2 floors and plenty of screens and projectors for game watching. Definitely recommend them for your game watch needs!
google avatar

Yelp
I love this spot. Their cocktails are so good, but their chicken tenders and brussels sprouts appetizers are even better. The bartenders are really nice and friendly and it's just a great local spot. I work very close by, and it's to the point where I can't walk by without stopping in. I'd highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Luciano M.

Yelp
I can't say enough positive things about this place. Anytime I bring friends they love the food and drink options. I've had friends make new friends here too. Just an overall positive experience.

Jack W.

Yelp
I liked this bar. It's a good bar but kinda sweaty. You can smoke cigarettes in the back. Pretty lit IMO
google avatar

Yelp
Exile? If this is exile I'll gladly break the rules and stay here with them. We popped in for brunch and ordered the brisket brunch & brisket sandwich with home fries. Their beef brisket is amazing - so full of flavor, perfect thickness & tenderness, great ratio on fat to meat. Just get it. I also really enjoyed their perfectly cooked home fries - no sogginess, nice crisp skin & starchy on the inside. The service was great despite the place getting packed in the midst of a rainstorm. I had the Dancing with Wolves APA which is fantastic - slightly hoppy balanced with sweet. Perfect accompaniment to the BBQ. Overall, solid brunch with great BBQ, service, and handpicked selection of drafts & cocktails. Can someone say amen?

Yelp
I love this bar like no other... Why it is great: 1. It has this great cheers neighborhood feel! The owners and chef are like your friends. 2. So many fun events (I had the beer and food pairing) 3. Got this clean look and feel but enough flair that you feel like you are actually at a bar. 4. Some of the most amazing hearty food I have ever had 5. Great well made drinks! When my super trendy socialite friend from San Francisco came to visit me, I took her here! and no where else. Great for friends, a first date, a second date, and any occasion to be with people you like.
google avatar

Lalita D.

Yelp
Ventured here on a Tuesday night for trivia. The service was excellent considering the top floor was PACKED! Our waiter was really attentive. I got the beef brisket with salad instead of fries/potato salad. Pros: I really liked that it was a spinach-based salad. I was a bit nervous ordering a salad considering it's a BBQ joint but the waiter assured me people get them and he didn't lead me astray. My friend did get the fries and they looked good too! This place got 4 instead of the 5 stars just because for a place that specializes in BBQ I thought the brisket was a little mediocre. It was pretty tough which I wasn't expecting. Overall I'd go again and try something else since the service was great and the happy hour specials also go until 8.

Yelp
Two words: home bar. I recently moved from Dallas to DC. I lived in Bowie and then just about a month ago moved to the U street corridor. All i can say is when you move cities you search for that one bar that you go to in all occasions: pre-game, sports, bad day, good day, hungry, want to forget the night, et al. I had that bar in dallas and it was amazing. Exiles may be that bar for me in DC. The kind of place they are making your drink as you walk into the place. Donagh (sp?) was the bartender that was slinging drinks the night I was there (first round of march madness) and he made a great old fashioned and was terrific company as I waiting for my friend to come. When she came she promptly ordered a mezcal margarita. He managed to fix both drinks expertly. I also ate there. At first I was a little nervous because they had several bbq options on the menu and coming from Texas lets just say I am a little reluctant about the bbq options in the DC area. Well the brisket plate was very solid. The meat was fatty which is a good thing with bbq. Donagh said they had a smoker out back and it showed. The potato salad was incredible as well. Definitely the best bbq I have had in this area. All in all this is the type of place you can come to in all moods and occasions. Just a very good all around local DC bar....I may be at home here after all.

Yelp
I'm new to DC. I wanted to find a Liverpool pub. I found a great one in the Queen Vic. But some kind patrons mentioned a second Liverpool bar nearer to me. I looked up Exiles. Seemed a nice place. I went to their Facebook page and instead of seeing specials, photos of food or Liverpool info (they don't even open until 10:30 am) I kept seeing posts about Prop 82. I had no idea what that is. So, I looked it up. Seemed like it might be a good thing for servers and bartenders. I simply asked why they're against it in a comment and then they blocked me like cowards. I mean how sensitive. They're the ones that posted about it to all their potential customers, not me. I was just curious what I was missing. Whatever. Won't be going there. Sticking with the folks I know and like already, even if it's a mile and a half farther away. Too bad. I was looking forward to having two Liverpool bars. Liverpool FB and the city are about courage, fight, blue-collar respect and having guts. Not this wet noodle action all because of an honest question. Ridiculous.
google avatar

Matthew H.

Yelp
It's your typical bar with an outdoor patio. Goose Island IPA at $4 during happy hour isn't terrible for DC.
google avatar

Ferris E.

Yelp
Amazing wings. Easily in the top 4 bars on U st. I have to add more words for yelp to let me post this.
google avatar

Justin M.

Yelp
Came here for a networking event and it's a nice little chill spot if you are in the area. They have certain deals literally everyday of the week and brunch on weekends. It can be a little tricky to find parking just because of the location.
google avatar

Danny R.

Yelp
I love this place. Great for hanging out and having a good time. Staff is attentive and friendly! Will ALWAYS come back.
google avatar

Avinash V.

Yelp
I usually do not leave a review but I felt like a review was needed for this place. The bartender was very very rude. We were using the restroom around 12 when it closes and the bartender started to use expletives and f word towards my friend. He asked me and a friend of mine to stand near the door while our bags are still inside and when my friend came back from the restroom she was manhandled by him to take her out of the bar. None of us were drunk or rude to the management. Infact we left a good tip which we automatically regretted.
google avatar

Meridena K.

Yelp
After previous disappointment for lack of food at the place I went to earlier, this was number 2 on my list to try based on the amazing reviews & photos of the food. The food described was nowhere to be found! Again, what am I missing?? It was a regular bar menu with wings, nachos, etc. But, there was a live band that was awesome, so I'm giving stars for the fun atmosphere & great band. If you need late night drunk snacks, then I think you're good to go.
google avatar

Bea H.

Yelp
This is easily my favorite bar in DC the bar has such a great vibe with the added surprise bonus of a heated, covered huge back patio! Buffalo Bills and Liverpool bar makes it so fun on a game day. The cherry on top is the staff- the bartenders are friendly, attentive and hilarious. They keep drinks and food moving and won't accommodate asshole patrons to ruin the atmosphere of the night, which I love. Good vibes only at Exiles!
google avatar

Bea E.

Yelp
Its owed by a group a friend, two of which, Donagh & Brian, work the bar on a regular basis. They have a great staff that seems to get along well. Whenever I'm there they are always laughing and playing around with each other and guest. The music defers depending on who's "DJing" that night, sometimes you get Tupac, sometimes you get Garth Brooks. Oh, and if you're looking for a place to book your next event they have more then enough space for you and your crew. There up stairs space is large with a cute little game room in the back and down stairs you can grab a seat inside or smell whatever the kitchen is cooking up on the smoker while you hang out on the patio. To read more of this review go to www.eatbwb.com

Yelp
Zoey is the best! Industry folks need to check out this vibrant haired bartender! I can't ask for a better bartender than her. This is the only place in town i know that has Cinzano 70 on deck.

David H.

Yelp
Best bar in DC especially for soccer fans the bartenders and owner is amazing 10/10 would recommend best people around!
google avatar

Carlos M.

Yelp
Great neighborhood bar. Had awesome bar food, think nachos and wings, but also great sandwiches. It's a particularly favorite place of mine for just stopping in and grabbing a beer with a friend.
google avatar

Alison B.

Yelp
Came here for a Bills game and it was packed! Really fun environment with two floors and many TVs. Bar has a good beer selection, but I was sadly not that impressed with the food. I ordered the Italian sandwich and it really didn't have much meat on it, mostly pickles! I'd still come back here for games and drinks with friends though, since the space was so great.
google avatar

Nathan P.

Yelp
The owners & bartenders are amazing! The owners were some of my favorite bartenders at a pub in Clarendon and they opened their own place. The vibe is great if you enjoy lively pubs! Make sure to check out the the second floor. The second floor has live music on Friday nights and a DJ on Saturday nights (The stairs are right in front of you as you enter the door but, somehow, easy to miss). Also, the back patio is really nice! So check that out too if it's a nice night out. Bonus: Your phone battery will never go dead. They have plugs for your phone all throughout the place. Also, you can open a tab anywhere in the bar and it's good throughout the bar. This is all evidence that this place was designed with the customer in mind!
google avatar

Andrew E.

Yelp
Literally yes. Was there for their bottomless brunch. You can choose between Bloody Marys, Mimosas, and Bellinis. Don't have to commit to just one. Here. For. It. The crowd picked up as the NFL games started. Watched as the Pack nailed two 50 yarders in a row which was - as straight people say - tight. They were very slightly understaffed, but our servers / bartenders straight up murdered the game. The Laura / Lauren combo was formidable. Would trust them with my life probably.
google avatar

Victoria S.

Yelp
I came to Exiles because of their great happy hour specials, it's rare to find places that have a happy hour that lasts till 8 pm! Their happy hour is a good deal, with drinks for $4, and food for $5. We tried the Beef Brisket Sliders (2 come with the order) and the Chicken Poppers. Both were good, typical pub fare, but not necessarily something to write home about. The atmosphere is very chill and welcoming. The interior seems a lot brighter and nicer than it was Stetson's, both upstairs and downstairs, but I didn't check out the outdoor patio. Our server was nice and attentive. She came by just before the end of happy hour to see if we wanted to get one more drink order in at the discounted price, which was appreciated.

Yelp
My first time here was for a NYE event my friend was hosting. The staff was extremely helpful in providing us with everything we needed to make this night a success, including decorations and food. Shout out to one specific bartender, Lauren. She basically made sure no one had to leave the dancefloor and brought the drinks to us in a timely manner considering the quantity of people at this event. Customer service and hospitality was great and even though it was a packed event everyone had a smile on their face and did their job like they enjoyed it. Recommend for anyone looking to rent space for a small event.
