The 7 Best Pupusas In SF

"The move at this Salvadoran spot in the Richmond is to go with the three pupusa combo ($15), and take your pick from the 11 filling options (we love the revuelta and hongos con queso). A mound of rice and beans ride shotgun, making this platter a balanced meal in our book. Just be sure to ask for curtido when you're ordering—it costs 50 cents extra. Then take your pupusas on a 15-minute walk to Golden Gate Park. " - ricky rodriguez, julia chen 1, patrick wong

Express Pupuseria Review - Richmond - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The pupusas coming out of Express Pupusería in the Richmond are satisfying the needs of the Avenues’ masa lovers. The move at this Salvadoran spot is to go with the three pupusa combo ($15), and take your pick from the 11 filling options. When in doubt, go revuelta and hongos con queso. A mound of rice and beans ride shotgun, making this platter a well-balanced meal in our book. Be sure to ask for curtido (it's 50 cents extra here) to pile high atop your cheesy discs. With just a couple two-tops inside, we like taking our pupusas on a 15-minute walk to Golden Gate Park." - Julia Chen

Google
A really good pupuseria in the heart of the Richmond. The Pupusas are made really well and are delicious. They are stuffed nicely along with all of its necessary sides. The platanos are a classic dish just wished they came with crema. The chicken pastelles were tasty. They had a real nice flavor to them. Everything came packed well, I was expecting a mess. All in all this is a definite reorder spot. Dos thumbs up 👍👍

Google
Hands down THE BEST pupusas in the Bay Area. Get their carne asada plate and order a cheesy pupusa on the side. 10/10 recommend!

Google
Got lunch here with my boyfriend the other day when we took the wrong bus. The pupusas were delicious as they were made fresh when we got there. There's plenty of seating in the back and the service was good.

Google
I'm going to give my honest review, honestly the place is dirty, super dirty, the cashier is super rude and doesn't care what you ask for, she only cares about the money and that's fine but she has no common sense, no skills in dealing with customers, It's the second time we've come because the food is really good, my boyfriend decided to change a pupusa about 30 seconds after ordering, we hadn't even paid and she said it couldn't be changed at that moment, I don't understand why she doesn't treat the customers well. Customers, it is a good place to eat but the atmosphere is not, it does not have the characteristic humor of Latinos and the person who runs the business is an Asian woman with no manners and rude.

Google
The pupusas are delicious and the price is right. Very friendly staff. Great westside option for when you don't want to go all the way to the mission.

Google
This popusas are heaven sent, they're officially my favorite. I got the shrimp with cheese, jalapeño with cheese and mushrooms with cheese. The all tasted delicious and didn't lack any flavor. I got the convo with the beans and rice. I like using the beans to dip the popusas(I appreciate that they put it in a separe container too) My only complaint is that the red sauce was not spicy and it was just bad. In addition I got the tamarind water and it was very good. The service is fast and everything is very clean. They have tables inside if you want to eat in the place or you can just order to go. 100% recommend.

Google
Some of the best Salvadoran food I’ve had outside of El Salvador. Every single item we had was perfect. Pupusas are to die for, try the revuelta. Great curtido. Plantain empanadas with black bean filling are incredible, crispy on the outside and so so soft on the inside. Beans + plantain is the best marriage of salty and sweet, similar to how the acidity of the curtido cuts through the richness of the pupusa. Desayuno típico (fresh cheese, Salvadoran cream, avocado slice, bean purée, 2 eggs made to order, fried plantains) is great if you want a sampler platter. Really wish I could have tried one of their soups or their chicken sub (pan de pollo).

Google
Love this place so much! Some of the best pupusas in San Francisco can be found here, especially those with zucchini! It's a really authentic place and also can highly recommend the sopa de pollo (chicken soup), a huge portion served as you see with thick corn tortillas.

Yelp
Living in the mission it's hard to believe that pupusas elsewhere can be anywhere near as good as what I have nearby. This place is super unassuming but the people are nice and they have some of the best pupusas around! And they give you basically unlimited curtido and salsa!! Also, I know it's a "pupuseria" but definitely don't sleep on the tamales. The masa is super well seasoned and flavorful that it's tasty regardless of what filling is inside.

Yelp
I drove by this place many many times and rolled my eyes. What in the world is the Salvadoran restaurant doing in the middle of the Richmond district?! This place looks kind of dingy too. I was so wrong! This is one of the best Pupusas in San Francisco, hands-down. They are my go to caterer when I want a big batch of Pupusas. They are helpful, affordable, and delicious. Also, if you haven't had Salvadoran tamales before, try them out. They're some of the best I've had. I hope this place survives. I almost never see people inside, maybe they mostly do to go orders. Your next time driving up to Marin, stop by here and pick up some Pupusas on the way. If you haven't brought Pupusas to a party, grab 20 or 30 of them and you will be everybody's favorite guest.

Yelp
All my pictures are terrible because we always dig in too quickly - but Express Pupuseria has been a regular stop since my friends moved to Richmond District. We came on a recommendation from SF locals, and the pupusas were so good. We always get the revueltas, frijol y queso, chicharron con queso and pollo con queso - so delicious and comforting. The rice and beans and slaw slides are great with the pupusas, too. We always order ahead for takeout/pickup and have even gotten delivery. Staff are always friendly and helpful. Can't wait until the next time we pick it up.

Yelp
Across from Lamp Plus on Geary Blvd. is Express Pupuseria, selling authentic Salvadoran fare in a hole-in-the-wall setting. We ordered at the counter: 2 chicken pupusas, a cheese and bean papusa, a pork tamales and 3 chicken pupusa combo. For drinks, we had a mango Fresca and Horchata. Everything tasted great except for the Horchata, which had a funky smell as if an ingredient (rice?) might've been store next to a cleaning agent. Restroom in the back was clean and I saw the ladies preparing fresh ingredients in the kitchen. No nonsense casual service and very affordable!

Yelp
Came here for a late night dinner and got the 3 pupusa combo! It was only $12 total. Great value. Got a bean & cheese, chicken & cheese, and a cilantro & cheese. All were pretty good and freshly made. It also came with pickled cabbage and a mild hot sauce. This is a good neighborhood spot for a quick meal or a late snack! They have a good amount of seating inside too

Yelp
Came here after doing the cross town hike and it was the best decision of my life! When we came they were on a lunch break so we ended up waiting about 20 minutes which was okay. We were quickly seated and ordered. I got the 3 pupusa combo plate and got two bean and cheese and one queso con loroco. I also got a Mexican Coke to drink. The food came out fairly quickly. They gave us some large containers of curtido and salsa to accompany our food. The curtido was fresh and complimented the warm, steamy pupusas nicely. The filling for all my pupusas was flavorful and they are not at all stingy with it. They are also super affordable and this huge plate was $13. The inside of the restaurant is clean and there is lots of seating. Once we were done, they quickly came to remove the curtido and salsa from our tables which we interpreted as they wanted us to leave but other than that it was a great experience and I would 100% come back.

Yelp
I hate to say this but I was super disappointed with my order yesterday. I ordered the 3 pupusas plate which was such a steal and got free platano on top of that. My revuelta pupusa was delicious and flavorful but the other two just fell apart and were super dry. The plate came with curtido, salsa, rice and beans which was such a great deal for the amount of money you pay. The rice and beans were warm and tasty but it didn't balance out the pupusas falling apart. Honesty, it just wasn't worth it in my opinion. I don't think I would come back!
google avatar

Andrea K.

Yelp
SO GOOD. I picked up a 2 pupusa combo for $10 on my lunch break, and it was everything I expected and more. Spinach and cheese pupusa: 10/10 get this! The cheese that leaked during cooking became CRISPY, and the cheese pull is unreal. Reveulta pupusa: 7/10 yummy, but the meat is not noticeable and was more like a bean and cheese pupusa. The combo already came with beans so I definitely will try other pupusas next time. Unexpected highlight: BEANS! Their beans are essentially a paste, but are delicious with the side of rice. TIP: order ahead because it does take a while to prepare if you don't want to wait.

Yelp
Delicious papusas! If you've never had a papusa, I suggest you try one here; it's a corn cake filled with various different ingredients. I got the cheese and bean papusa. They give you toppings, a cabbage mixture like sauerkraut and hot sauce. If you want a spicier hot sauce, ask them for it. I just left and am already craving more! The interior is simple, with basic seats and tables. Our food came out after about ten minutes, cooked fresh. Can't wait to return.
google avatar

Grace B.

Yelp
The three pupusa combo was excellent! I got a chicken and cheese, revuelta, and jalapeño and cheese. As other reviewers stated, the beans that come with the combo are super tasty.
google avatar

Gerali D.

Yelp
Pupusas are great and their cortido is delicious, I always ask for them extra. As someone who is lactose intolerant, I appreciate that they can accommodate no cheese on their revueltas. They also make it easy to call ahead to place an order for pickup. Very reasonable prices- I'm happy to have them in my neighborhood!
google avatar

Yelp
Having tried other pupusa spots around the Bay Area, this is one of my favorite pupusa spots. They have a wide variety of choices. There are seats not only in front but in the back as well. Made fresh to order, I ordered the chicken and cheese and mushroom and chicken pupusa. Hubby ordered a steak burrito. Items came fresh and hot. Really delicious!
google avatar

Dennis R.

Yelp
Delicious pupusas. I have ordered the revueltas many times and they are always consistent and well made. I usually order take-out and when I get home (10 minutes later), it is still hot and great to consume. The people working there are efficient and thoughtful. Simple good fast food. Recommended. If you order walk in, be prepared to wait about 20 minutes. Easier to call in and pick up.
google avatar

Juan V.

Yelp
Great delicious meal for a cheap price in San Francisco terms. The pupusas had good flavor and texture. A great value with great taste. Must try if you are around Geary in San Francisco.
google avatar

Jennifer V.

Yelp
First Time Coming! This spot was good, the frijoles are the best!!!! The popusa tasted more like cheese then anything, I got the revuelta, I would say they just needed to add more beans and pork into mine because all I tasted was the cheese, other then that it was all good and the desayuno is also a good option :)
google avatar

Yelp
I just discovered this place - probably walked by hundreds of times and never thought to look until I google mapped food places during my walk because I was starving. The pupusas are so good. They were made fresh right after I ordered. There is a $10 minimum for card charges so I ordered the 2 pupusa combo. I'm glad I did as it was filling and I ate my plate clean. I ordered the bean and cheese and spinach and cheese - will try to come back to try their meat pupusas. Also yes, they closed for a break not long after I came in at 3:30 pm, so seems like they take a break in the mid afternoon. I saw some reviews complaining about this - so perhaps call ahead. But I am so very pleased to have found this place. Please eat here so my neighborhood spots stay in business!!
google avatar

Mauricio D.

Yelp
Pupusas were falling apart. Unlike other places. The bean and cheese pupusas had more cheese than beans. Should be the other way.
google avatar

Binh P.

Yelp
Amazing place to get pupusas and refried beans. Always freshly made and comes with a good amount of slaw and sauce. The hot sauce isn't very spicy, but the refreshing slaw makes up for it. The revuelta pupasas are a mix of pork, beans, and cheese. So probably the best option if you can't choose. The refried beans are also spectacular. They're blended down to a paste, but oh so flavorful. Very convenient place in the Richmond district if you don't want to make your way to the Mission for pupusas, but these taste way better anyways.

Josephine P.

Yelp
I order from here maybe once a week. Food is always so delicious, best pupusas I've ever had. Great prices and they are so friendly!

Julia O.

Yelp
I could eat here every day. I love pupusas and these are authentic, cheap by the city's standards and most importantly delicious. I always order the chicken and cheese pupusas, the beans, and their plantains
google avatar

Ben M.

Yelp
If you have had great Pupusas and you know what to expect then you should not be disappointed. This spot is a hidden away in an unassuming storefront, everything is made to order, it is not fast. it's the real thing, right down to the pickled cabbage, the salsa and the service. Just like a roadside Pupuseria in El Salvador where families stop on a Sunday morning to fill up. it is amazing. If you have never had Pupusas before this is a great place to go try out some El Salvadorian food. Start simple with a bean and cheese, cheese and Loroco and a pork or chicken with beans. The other plates are great, the nachos are large and more than I could eat on my own. for me, its about the traditional Papusas.
google avatar

Siddhartha G.

Yelp
A Salvadorean gem, this pupuseria is authentic, no-frills and gets you hot, fat and steamy pupusas for low prices. You get a tub of both cabbage and red sauce on the side which you can pour out from family style. They're happy to customize pupusas for you (I got mine without cheese and just the spinach and beans). I love the masa flour they use. As I was eating, they closed for an hour or so and barricaded the door, then disappeared in the back to enjoy their own meals. It was funny sitting alone in silence stuffing my face and then squeezing myself out the door when I was done. I'd gladly swap out most other conveniences for a plate of authentic hot food and Express excels at just that.
google avatar

Kamden G.

Yelp
Great tasty pupusas and chill vibes with small indoor seating- plantains were good too :)
google avatar

Flix N.

Yelp
Great pupusas, I could eat a bucket of their curtido. Don't let the humble storefront fool you. Definitely worth a visit.
google avatar

Janessa M.

Yelp
The pupusas here are so delicious!!! I got the 2 pupusa combo with revuelta and spinach & cheese pupusa. If you dine in, they give you a lots of cabbage in a jar and plenty of red sauce to go with the pupusas. I also recommend getting the mushroom & cheese pupusa, it was really good! $10 for this meal is such a good deal!
google avatar

Dallas T.

Yelp
Good food for good price! I love this place, the staff is nice and quick with the food:) I like how simple the decorations are because I am here for the great pupusas, I love their salad and salsa so much.
google avatar

Melanie R.

Yelp
Food here is sooooo good. It definitely meets my standards for authentic pupusas. We've been here several times now - and we always bring our guests when they're in town to visit and they love it just as much as we do. Service is okay but whatever, it does not ruin my experience. I'm not going to the restaurant and expecting to be wowed by their service but they're still pretty friendly. Food is made to order so expect longer wait times, but definitely worth it.

Leonard F.

Yelp
The pupusas were 10/10, I liked the cilantro and queso pupusa the most! Loved the vegetable marinade/salsa they give you for the pupusas. Also like the crema and plantains! Very affordable pricing as well.
google avatar

Tammy P.

Yelp
An absolute gem. 1. I had no idea I'd be this happy being near a pupuseria. 2. My go to is a 2 pupusa combo. The combo comes with your 2 pupusas, rice, refried beans, curtido (cabbage slaw), and salsa roja. 3. My go to is always 1 revuelta, and I go back and forth between frijol con queso and pollo con queso. If you can't decide, revuelta is the way to go. The pupusas are stuffed with filling and usually intact (sometimes cheese leaks out while cooking and it get all crispy and yummy), and always fresh and hot. 4. I absolutely love their refried beans. I believe they use black beans and it's always blended/mashed to such a smooth consistency. It's savory and so tasty with the rice or even as a dip. It's so delicious I could eat a bowl of this. 5. Let's talk about price - $10 for a 2 pupusa combo, that's a steal. 6. And a little life hack, call in your order before heading over. They make these fresh so it takes some time.

Philip J.

Yelp
This place can be hit or miss depending on who is cooking. Sometimes the pupusas are perfect and sometimes they're waaaaay to oily.
google avatar

Minnie B.

Yelp
This small spot is an unassuming little gem in the Richmond district. Their good sized pupusas are fresh, flavorful, and not greasy. They are also reasonably priced.

Jordan H.

Yelp
This place is excellent. Order from here a few times a month and it's delicious. Super fresh and tasty pupusas. Also love the rice and beans.
google avatar

Mr. Potato G.

Yelp
Hate to do this...But...tonight's order was f*cking pathetic. The tamales were literally half the size they normally are. Not sure if it is a new person working..new owner...or just flat out being lazy...but the tamales I got this evening were laughable and almost %50 less than normal size. If times are getting tough. Be real with your customers.
google avatar

Mango M.

Yelp
Best value meal in all of SF! $10 for a 2 pupusa plate is a super filling meal and comes with beans and rice. We ordered revuelta (holy trinity of bean cheese and pork) and spinach and cheese and both were very good. They make it fresh after you order and it comes out piping hot and delicious. The curtido (cabbage slaw) is help yourself in a container. Plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors and so refreshing with a Coke in a glass bottle.
google avatar

Jessica J.

Yelp
Delicious and affordable! Mango juice was great too. I ordered chicken & cheese and bean & cheese. Both were yummy.
google avatar

Andy L.

Yelp
The food here is decent, but the hours are incredibly annoying. I've been here about over 5 times now at various times and they are always on closed on break. I completely understand that employees need breaks, but don't list that you are open when you're not.
google avatar

Mario C.

Yelp
Poor customer service. At least post your schedule so people don't drive over or try to call on your break.

Quentin F.

Yelp
Great food. Love the popusas but I also like the tacos a lot. Food comes out relatively quick.
google avatar

Jacob P.

Yelp
Pupusas are one of my favorite things on earth, and when I saw there was a place dishing them out on Geary I had to stop by. The Pupusas are huge, affordable, and delicious, and the Curtido it was served with had the perfect bite. I'll for sure be back when I need my next pupusa fix
google avatar

Lisa X.

Yelp
My first time having papusas was eons ago at my friend R + J wedding. It was my first bridesmaid gig and my first combo Jewish-Christian wedding, so I had no idea what to expect. When we were told to line up for food (papusas) I literally beelined to the front because I was so hungry. The wedding party got up super early, no breakfast, and basically didn't eat a thing until after the ceremony (late afternoon) and when papusas vendor came along, my stomach was growling. So I like downed 3 of these delicious things with the cabbage curtido slaw and went back for more. And a lot of the guests were doing the same. Little did most of us know that was just an appetizer. We had the wedding meal coming and oops by then, we were all too stuffed to eat the main meal. We made the mistake thinking that the papusas was the wedding meal. Haha. It was that delicious! Fast forward to now. One of our acquaintances loves his El Salvadoran food and swears that the papusas is the real deal here. Hubby and I tried it a while back, but I don't remember much. Recently went there to try it again and I can see why. It's so good. The skin of the papusas was not overly doughy like others I have tried, and the fillings so tasty. The papusas are made to order so it's really fresh, hot, delicious and customizable. The curtido really punched up the flavor. They also sell tamales and hot typical breakfast here though I haven't tried the breakfast. The papusas are legit good and you don't need to go the mission to get them.
google avatar

sew h.

Yelp
Yummy pupusas not too greasy and the right amount of cheese and filling. Refried beans are good too! Ive only had delivery, and the food has always been packed well. A fantastic hidden gem in the Richmond District
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Amazing food, taste like home. Great service and great atmosphere with music playing. So so good!

Rosa S.

Yelp
It's obvious some people don't know about food and flavor. I still stand on saying do not spend your money here cause it's not worth it. If you see the pictures they have a lot to say.
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
Super good food and lots of options. The dishes are bigger than we thought and were super delicious. Pretty affordable and excellent ingredients. I recommends everyone try this. I ordered 3 but could have just done 2.
google avatar

Patrick S.

Yelp
An unassuming little Salvadorean place on Geary. Portions are great. Prices are decent. The food is good. It would be four stars if it was a little cleaner and friendlier.
google avatar

Leslie P.

Yelp
YUMMY!! That is all I can say. This place's pupusas ALWAYS hit the spot for me no matter when I get them. Highly recommend the revueltas and bean and cheese ones, those are my favorite.

Antonio G.

Yelp
The worst restaurant, The service is horrible, they treat customers like trash, they moving your table whit out permission
google avatar

Paul E.

Yelp
Best pupusas in SF. Always loved Bilompis pupuseria, but now a new fave. Huge, excellent curtido. Recommend the beef and cheese and bean and cheese. Winner!
google avatar

Rovingaile P.

Yelp
I tried Express Pupuseria for the first time, and it was good overall! I ordered frijol y queso and the jalapeño con queso pupusas. The frijol y queso is a great standard pupusa. The filling was flavored well. The jalapeño con queso fell a bit short to me. I couldn't really taste the jalapeño too much, and it wasn't spicy. Their provided salsa was also not spicy. However, the pupusa breading itself tasted reeaallly good and freshly made. With how filling each pupusa is, I think it is also decently priced! Lastly, the staff was nice and friendly. It was worth the visit!
