The Best Restaurants and Bars on Portland’s Killingsworth Street | Eater Portland

"If there is a platonic ideal of a Portland neighborhood coffee shop, Extracto comes uncannily close. Roomy but intimate, relaxed but often bustling, Extracto eschews preciousness while roasting and brewing some of the region’s best coffee. Hunker down with a good book near a window, or marvel at the 1951-vintage cast iron Probat roaster at work in the back room. Patio seating out front and in the back fill up quickly on warm days." - Nathan Williams

Outstanding Portland Coffee Shops With Free Wi-Fi

"With its neighborhood feel and ample seating, Extracto is a laidback cafe where you can find your focus. Select a Nuvrei pastry out of the case, choose from drinks like espresso beverages, iced teas, or Queen of Sheba chai, and get to work using the cafe’s free Wi-Fi." - Nick Woo, Janey Wong

21 Distinctive Portland Cafes That Roast Their Own Coffee

"After nearly two decades on Killingsworth, Extracto is a venerable institution by Portland standards. With a loyal clientele coming for the cafe’s bright but homey vibes as much as the brews, one could imagine a slight dip in quality as the years roll on. On the contrary, Extracto has maintained an unwavering commitment to balanced roasts of carefully curated beans from around the globe. Tip: if Extracto’s pastry display is picked over, head around the corner for a bite at Flour Market." - Katrina Yentch, Nathan Williams

The Best Restaurants and Bars in Portland’s Concordia Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"An essential piece of Concordia since 2006, Extracto roasts its beans in-house on a vintage 1950s roaster and has built a loyal following of both neighborhood locals, Portlanders from other ’hoods, and out-of-town coffee nerds. Extracto hasn’t let any of this go to its head, remaining a low-key, unpretentious coffee shop with plenty of space to savor a brew on all but the busiest weekend mornings. The modest selection of baked goods is reliably tasty but can be picked over by afternoon." - Nathan Williams

Some of nicest coffee in town. Pastries are always fresh. Friendly servers and nice vibe. Outdoor seating year round. Short wait even when it’s busy.

If you know what good coffee is, and enjoy real crafted product, this is the place to go. For almost 20 years I've been drinking Extracto and it never disappoints. Alway several varieties of bean to choose from. The roasting staff have been here since the beginning led by the owner Chris and do an excellent job extracting rhe best flavor profiles from each varietal. Do yourself a favor and go give it a try. You will be glad you did.

Google
We were in town for the weekend and on the hunt for a nonchain coffee spot before hitting the road...stumbled onto this gem quite by accident, what a lucky twist of fate. Just felt comfortable walking in, the drone of the roaster running in back somehow added to the charm, maybe it was the sublime coffee. Lovely gal running the register seemed in concert with the gentleman making the drinks...quite a pair.

What a relaxing atmosphere to wake up to! Staff was quick with it and very informative. This spot came suggested by multiple “coffee people”, you the type, we all have them as friends. Never question the coffee people in your life. Just give them coffee, they will be okay 👍🏽 Yes I will be back!

Google
To start, the two people working were welcoming and the atmosphere was warm. However, the coffee and pastries were mediocre. The almond pastry was tasty, but i wasn't offered to have it toasted. The latte had good art, but was extremely foamy. Milk tasted burnt and the espresso flavor didn't come through well (8oz). A good local shop but perhaps better barista QC would be helpful

Google
I just LOVE this place. Best coffee in PDX. Great private tables, and then a long communal table. Killer blackberry scone!!

Google
A friend told us to go here during our Portland trip and we’re glad we did. Excellent almond milk lattes! Smooth and the espresso was spot on. The blueberry muffin was surprisingly unique and delicious.

Google
Open space, cool barista’s, and this person‘s art, which is pretty cool honestly. I feel like I found a Portland Banksy. Their selection of pastries is way better than most coffee shops, and they have Bowery bagels.

Yelp
Such a cute little coffeehouse in Portland! Loving the vibe here and they support local artists and craft makers by displaying their artwork on the walls. There are different artists nearly every time I visit and I love to check them out while I wait for my drink to be made. The coffee here is amazing. It's my favorite coffee place in Portland. The beans they use taste exquisite - creamy and very smooth. Packed with flavor. I always get their mocha and it's the best mocha I've ever tried and I get A LOT of mochas. It's my go-to coffee place. I believe the chocolate sauce they use in their mocha is homemade and it's very rich. They really struck a nice balance between milk and dark chocolate where the flavors intermingle with the coffee and create a drink worthy of being framed. I don't live in Portland but I always head over there if I am looking for a great cup of coffee. You will love this place! Check it out!

Yelp
This is a cozy cafe with some seating. There's also 2 bathrooms at the back of the cafe as well. I was impressed by the size of the pastries they had offered with the price, the value!! I got the Matcha Latte in a 16oz large with oat milk. This was pleasant to drink, I enjoyed it very much as it woke me up slowly on a Friday morning. Service was good and I got my drink fairly quickly.
google avatar

Jim H.

Yelp
This place used to roast once of Portland's best coffees. I didn't mind the $4 price increase per 12oz bag, but not for their current offerings.

Yelp
The coffee is good, I'll give them that, but the service is terrible. I've been in twice, once the door was open and the welcome sign was out so I walked in and was yelled at by an employee because they weren't actually open. So I gave it another try, and the owner was very grumpy and rude to my friend and I. Now I understand why the employees treat customers like that, it starts from the top. The ambiance is lacking, very basic inside, and not a comfortable environment. I would not recommend hanging around, but it's a good place if you need a cup of Joe to go.

Tracey W.

Yelp
Workers seemed tense. Owners were rude to me and I have heard from other baristas that they are transphobic (to their staff), and that was certainly why I think I got a once over from them when approached about a resume I sent in. They could barely hide how much they didn't want to talk to me, although they sort of tried to be fake polite, I was very confused by the way the male owner was looking at my jacket, pins, looking me up and down, despite me being dressed pretty Oregon Rainy Day casual. When I heard from ex employees thru the industry grapevine that they had been transphobic, it made a LOT of sense, although I had hoped that wasn't the case (I didn't assume initially). Coffee was soso. Fine enough espresso I guess but flavorless mocha. Baristas seemed very tense and paranoid, totally stiff and freaked out... I've been there. It's always a management issue. I'm bummed bc we went months prior, and they had radical local leftist art on the walls lmfao. Makes me wonder if the workers are being treated fairly. No excuse for this weirdo behavior in Portland... there are more respectful shops to go to, I will never go back now that I heard what I heard.

Yelp
A coworker recommended this place to us and we were not disappointed. We stopped in just after the opened and both got coffee and butter croissants. Since it was early the staff were still putting out the baked goods. I would have chosen the almond croissant instead of the butter one but we had already been given our baked goods. The coffee art was a cool touch. While I do drink coffee, I'm not crazy with it. However, I have to say I enjoyed this coffee more that the one from that big, popular chain. I was also very glad that they do carry alternative milk options. The croissant was flaky on the outside and soft and delicious on the inside. Would definitely try them again if I'm back in Portland.

Yelp
Beans roasted to perfection. As an Aussie visiting Portland I was really impressed. Definitely the best coffee I've had in Portland.

Jason J.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place. It is near my apartment and it smells good when you go in, but both times I have been in here, the coffee has been all but nonexistent in their drinks. My lattes were basically warm milk with a couple of drops of coffee in it. Disappointing.
google avatar

Aarti B.

Yelp
Disappointing service and the worst coffee shop in Alberta. Don't get the bagel, you've been warned! As most shops overdo it with the cream cheese, I specifically requested for it on the side. Nope - the bagel was smothered with layers of cream cheese! When I asked for a plate to unload all the extra cream cheese, the server frowned. Like the service, the bagel was tasteless. None of the pastries are made in-house. The Cinnamon Crown was super sticky and doused with sugar while the chocolate croissant was nothing special. The mocha was the best part. With so many wonderful coffee shops in Alberta, save your money and appetite. Head over to Arrow Coffee House or SeaStar Bakery, where all the scrumptious pastries are made fresh in-house and great coffee!

Charlie S.

Yelp
Best beans in PDX.. do miss the self serve to option drip they used to have pre COVID but still the house drip is tits..

Yelp
BEST CAPPUCCINO I've ever had in my entire life. The espresso was sooo good. I was in absolute heaven. I always long for European style cappuccinos, and I've never seen something come quite as close in the states as this one did.
google avatar

Katrina C.

Yelp
Great neighborhood coffee shop with a simple and straight forward menu. Pastries for the day included zucchini carrot bread, biscotti crisp, marionberry jam bar, muffins and cookies. I ordered an 8oz nonfat vanilla latte, and it was fine. Creamy and frothy with the first sip and then smoothed out the rest of the way. I personally prefer a bold espresso, which I could not taste in my drink unfortunately. I appreciated that it wasn't overly sweetened by the organic syrup. Customer service was fine too. The employee at the makeshift ordering window was friendly. My drink was prepared quickly so I was in and out of the place no longer than 5 minutes.
google avatar

Humam T.

Yelp
I came here for the first time because I had a gift certificate (thank you Mike F). They managed to many tables in the available space, so it's a bit crowded. Many of the tables are not close to an outlet either. Customer service is good, and they are helpful. Also, you can get a cup of almonds which is a nice healthy touch. The only reason they didn't get 5 stars is because they did not have sugar-free flavors. If I were a diabetic, I would feel being left out. I would definitely go back there and then oh, because it's a good place to work or study.
google avatar

Conrad B.

Yelp
Who doesn't love when a place knows your order? It's even better when you surprise them with something new, and the barista does a double take. :) Not to mention coffee delivery. Please support this wonderful establishment! (btw, for non-coffee people, the hot chocolate is fantastic)
google avatar

Mike E.

Yelp
Great coffee. Nice friendly staff. The blueberry muffins are out of this world. Locally sourced bakery. Highly recommend them!
google avatar

Yelp
Maybe the 8oz americano with steamed oat milk was a single shot espresso? It wasn't very flavorful... My husband had a shot of espresso. He wasn't a fan because it was a little too acidic. But the entire place was cute! And they had a line 9am on a Wednesday morning. The pastries looked very tasty! But I didn't have any.
google avatar

Sara E.

Yelp
I'm partially biased as I live close to Extracto so it's the closest coffee shop to me; however, I have always found it to be good quality and a chill environment. I also contacted them to place a bulk order of smaller bags of coffee to go in welcome bags at my wedding (wanting to give guests a taste of Portland coffee close to my house), and they totally delivered. Although I am always a bit nervous with casual orders like this (I had only communicated via email with the manager and hadn't paid ahead of time), I was so pleased when a large box of small bags of coffee beans was waiting for me, all with the Extracto logo on them. Painless process with wonderful results. Thanks, Extracto!
google avatar

John V.

Yelp
I live down the street and for over 5 years this has been my coffee shop. During the pandemic I loved that you had coffee delivery too. Unfortunately this morning I once again had a negative experience and have decided I won't be back. I'm paying $6 for a Latte, I know it's hard to find good employees these days but the slightest effort or attention to detail would really help. I've never made a Latte but I've consumed thousands of them and the one I received this morning was one of the worst I've had...after they screwed up the order to begin with. So I asked for a refund and gave the drink back, I guess there's a first time in life for everything, thanks for ruining part of my morning, wish you could find better employees
google avatar

Kay L.

Yelp
Rude service. Coffee is meh. Golden milk tasted like smokey plastic and was undrinkable. Won't be going back again.
google avatar

Julie L.

Yelp
The coffee here is inconsistent. I have had amazing cups and I've also had acidic and sludgy cups of coffee. Consistency is important to me. The other consideration for my 2 star review is value - I was just charged $7.80 for a triple shot latte with alt milk. I've never paid over $7 for a latte before. Luckily it's one of the better tasting lattes from there. They even charged for honey! Crazy... I won't be going back. I'd rather make my own at home then pay these prices for inconsistency.
google avatar

Andy D.

Yelp
Always good to hear, oh they're much better then Starbucks. I now sing that praise, they are way, way much better then Starbucks. Just from having a Cafe Au Latte and a croissant it all fell together, these people aren't armatures, they have knowledge, it's the smoothest coffee I think I've ever had, no bite and a great aftertaste. I'm assuming they're nice people, they were nice to me and after all it's Portland. Shang-Hi-ing is in the past and it's to cold to protest at a park. I like this place, I get good vibes.
google avatar

Pete A.

Yelp
I highly recommend the single origin espresso here, and regular coffee is always fresh and flavorful. The oat milk mochas are also amazing. I'm a regular here, as it's a great destination to walk to in the Concordia/Alberta area. The changing art displays are often really interesting too.

Yelp
On a lovely Tuesday morning at 8:00am, I popped by Extracto for my first cuppa in Portland. The barista was friendly and patient as I scanned the menu and the pastry case for a goodie to go with. I ordered a cappuccino + croissant, and my friend opted for a mocha + cheddar jalapeno bagel. Warmed up, the bagel was delightfully warm and melty. The cappuccino was standard for me. The mocha was not too sweet, which was perfect. During my hour or so here, multiple patrons came by and sat with their pups out front. The huge glass windows let in a lot of light. All in all, solid spot in the neighborhood for coffee.

Connor B.

Yelp
First time in PDX. I've heard so much about the coffee scene here and Extracto was exactly what I was looking for. Chris helped me at the register and was super cool and friendly. The oat milk cappuccino I got was excellent, great flavor, and the blueberry muffin was tasty as well. If you're visiting from out of town, you gotta try Extracto
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Went there this morning pumped to get some good espresso and delighted that this place is right around the corner from where I'm pet-sitting. Told the fella at the register I'd like an Americano with some room, to which he responded with an expressionless face and tone, "Size?" I told him a 12 oz. He impatiently asked, "For here, to go...?" To go. When I handed him my (swipe, no chip) card he said, "Oh wow... You don't see these anymore..." When it didn't work and I decided to pay with cash, he said, "Oh wow you don't see people with cash on hand anymore either..." Wtf? Dude, I just came to get some coffee. It shouldn't matter how I'm paying, and it's literally your job to politely ask the details of my order. Try being a little more welcoming? The Americano came out quick, but I've definitely had better quality espresso. I'll likely go back, maybe it's cool otherwise or on other days.

Yelp
You know what, my friend Susy brought me here. Extracto was her neighborhood coffee shop. We sat at a white table near the front and enjoyed lattes and pastries and had the best time laughing about how everyone working that day seemed to have been issued the same beard. She got a bag of her favorite coffee to go, Flores Island, and we enjoyed our time during a cold early December day breathing the beautiful, sweet coffee aroma at that white table. She was my great friend. Susy Munk was a beautiful spirit who brought joy, an amazing sense of humor, and thoughtfulness to all of her family and friends. My life is rich because she and her joyous laugh were part of it. Susy lost her fight with cancer on March 14 and so we couldn't visit Extracto together when I was in town ten days later on a trip where I'd planned to see her. I visited Extracto instead with some of our school friends from Wazzu to spend time where Susy spent her time, to breathe the air Susy breathed. We loved her. I saw that empty white table where we had sat and hoped that everyone who sits there could enjoy their time as Susy and I did on that one day, the last coffee we shared by ourselves. My hope is that everyone who sits there can feel that their time there is special because Susy's time there was special. I think the best thing about coffee is the time you spend drinking it. Because of this, the coffee I had that day with Susy was the best coffee I ever had. Thanks to you good people at Extracto who gave my friend Susy such a good place to be. The things we do in the quiet times, the small pleasures of coffee with a good friend, are actually important things that can last well after the cinnamon roll is gone and the coffee cup is in bus bin waiting to be washed and ready for the next customer to walk through the door on a cold winter day.
google avatar

Jason F.

Yelp
They have mediocre coffee and snacks (at best) and are WAY overpriced. Skip this place and go to one of the many others in walking distance.
google avatar

Dulce P.

Yelp
I started coming here because my husband liked it. I started to like it as well. Our favorite is the vanilla latte. I tried the matcha latte but I must say it's not my favorite. It's a little more biter than I like. I have tried another one that is just the right everything in it. The bread they have is a little too expensive compared to other coffee shops. They have cool art in the walks from local artist that I enjoy.
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
In the nearly 3 years I've lived in this overhyped city I've had maybe 4 incredible shots of espresso. Extracto was my first and most current. I have had a fair amount of decent shots but as far as exceptional goes, Extracto has had the most. For me at least! Employees are all extremely friendly and that LaMarzocco is STUNNING! Free Pencils and an old sharpener at the bus station are the coolest ever! Super Ristretto IV Lyfe!!!!
google avatar

E G.

Yelp
I love Extracto. I love the coffee. I love the service. I love the people. I love when there are friendly dogs out front. I love the pastries. I love the beans. I love that they will grind the beans for me because I don't have a grinder (spice accident, don't ask!) I love all the things.
google avatar

Rosheil V.

Yelp
One of my fave coffeeshops in my neighborhood. What I like: 1. Baristas are friendly and know how to make good mocha. 2. Mocha with almond milk. Not too sweet and rich. 3. GF pastries. Though they are seasonal, they are palatable. They dont taste like cardboard or stale. They do run out fast. Youd be lucky to get one if you go in the afternoon. 4. Great space for work/reading. Wifi sometimes need to be reset/spotty but when you ask them, they usually respond immediately. Super busy in the morning weekdays and esp weekends but they are fast.

Elle A.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop. Get here early as the bakery case was nearly empty when we arrived at noon - although the cookie jars were full! There are vegan alternatives for milk, and one gluten free option for pastry (I didn't see any vegan pastries). Not sure if the coffee is Organic as it is not clearly stated on website or social media. Cool local art on the wall and other merch for sale (branded guitar picks and t-shirts). Great space to work on your computer, and there is an outside patio to enjoy.
google avatar

Cassandra C.

Yelp
I can't remember if I came here 1x before, but I'm pretty sure this is what they serve for drip at Beast during their brunch. I stopped by on a recommendation for their cold brew. Holy snorps, the cold brew is the richest, most caffeinated I've had in the city. This isn't in my neighborhood but my coffee stood out against the other joints in town. I didn't particularly care for the beans I had but the process seems unique and yields a nice product. I'll try again!
google avatar

G. S.

Yelp
Don't know if it's a Portland thing but the coffee here is strong but not bitter. So kudos to this establishment for being awesome during this crazy time.
google avatar

Dana H.

Yelp
Really good coffee house! Portland has a plethora of these, though, so while I wouldn't make any special trips here, I'd absolutely come again for another cup of coffee. The roastery is on-site, which is super cool. If you're a coffee aficionado I'm sure you'll like this place a lot, but again, there are many local roasters and I'd say they're all good. There's a small selection of fine, nothing special pastries. Drink menu is very typical and ordinary. Good, classic drinks. Free WiFi. Always crowded. You know, Portland coffee shop. Staff was younger and friendly.
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
Delicious coffee that is roasted in house. As you walk in, the note of beans being roasted hits the nose. On the way to the bathroom, you can see the 1950's roaster from Germany at work and the roasters are happy to explain the process. A medium coffee with a refill is 2.25$. Lots of tables for studying and good wi-fi. Too bad it is so far away from NW PDX. Close by is People's yoga! Good parking and nice unpretentious place
google avatar

Mariko K.

Yelp
I finally had a chance to try out this location (I've only been to the Prescott location). Both my friend's and my coffee was delicious. The baristas were chill and so were the other customers. It was a good thing I picked up my beans at the Prescott location recently because they had a very limited selection here.
google avatar

Brooks M.

Yelp
This is one of my regular neighborhood faves. They are quick about getting through the line at busy times but always friendly and swift with the interaction. When there is time they will happily engage and chat. All the folks working here seem to be awesome individuals contributing to the bettering of Portland community. If you live nearby you know this is a local secret as Alberta is just blocks away. The treats are good and the tea list is solid. They roast their own coffee and do so with care and love, the results shine through in the complexity you get in every cup. A great work spot if you can deal with a louder space. But lots of windows at the front, power plugs along the walls and regular 2 to 4 person table surfaces. If you're gonna be all day you may need to venture out for real food but they've got you covered for the small stuff.
google avatar

Jess C.

Yelp
Extracto is a local chain coffee shop serving a minimalistic menu (espresso, coffee, chai) and a handful of pastries (looked just ok). Solid espresso ($2.75 for a double) but was not a big fan of the mocha ($4), which wasn't sweet or chocolatey enough for me. Milk alternatives available: almond milk (Pacific) and soy.
google avatar

Peter Z.

Yelp
Great coffee and kind of amazing latte art too. This is one of my favorite Portland places.
google avatar

Rhonda H.

Yelp
I can't believe I have never reviewed these guys before. Love the coffee and the crew. They have been a solid go to before and during Covid. I am spoiled by this coffee and drink nothing else. They even deliver beans! These guys are solid.
google avatar

Abby W.

Yelp
The almond milk latte I got at this spot was honestly pretty good, but there straight black coffee was not nearly as solid. If you happen to be in the neighborhood, shopping local is a great idea, but make sure you have lots of things covering the coffee taste in your coffee. Otherwise Folgers might be a better option for about the same price. It has great atmosphere and the staff was very friendly. Maybe the roast I had was just a bit off.
google avatar

Elle B.

Yelp
Excellent cold brew!! My friends also really enjoyed the lattes. Top coffee place in Portland for me. Really enjoyed this.
google avatar

Mercedes C.

Yelp
Adorably-Portland coffee house! It's a little place with bags of coffee beans in the back alongside the grinder. There's a good amount of space for meeting with friends or for studying! We got lucky and grabbed a big table by the window so we could enjoy the sun & my wonderful coffee. I had to add some simple syrup to get the flavor sweet enough for me. But otherwise it was a really good experience! Will be back :)
google avatar

Louise G.

Yelp
Coffee + internet. . .what else do you need if you're living the good life??? Oh yeah. .. money and happiness would be nice. . .but until then. . .coffee + internet will suffice. Coffee is high quality, for me that mean its not bitter when you drink it and you actually taste the coffee flavor. The menu is simple and not to many foo-foo drinks for over $5+. . .I think the most expensive drink here is $4.
google avatar

Tommy L.

Yelp
Ordered the matcha latte and requested for extra matcha. Drink was what I wanted, more matcha and not overtly sweet. Cute neighborhood cafe. Plenty of seats and tables.
google avatar

Debbie B.

Yelp
Delicious coffee and congenial baristas. The vegan muffins were a hit. Also, I love that you can get a free pencil for sketching. Beautiful prints on the wall when we visited. A perfect place to hang out and sketch.
google avatar

Lizbeth R.

Yelp
Coffee was good, service was quick and friendly. I ordered the almond milk vanilla latte. They made a very cute design on top, perfect for that Instagram picture. I also ordered another vanilla latte and came with a different design on the coffee. This place really made my morning.
google avatar

Charlie C.

Yelp
11 min to get an espresso! coffee good, service annoying. all the staff is here to chat with their friends. Coffee is one of those things that you need now. not in 7 min while you chat with your friends. But if you actually have a half hour or more to have a cup of coffee, the coffee is worth it.
google avatar

Dave S.

Yelp
I stopped in to grab my morning Latte while in town, this shop had good reviews and was a few blocks from where I was staying. I am super happy that I stopped in here, the coffee might have been my favorite while visiting the city, at the least it is tied for the top spot. As a coffee lover it is always awesome to find a good place for coffee, and Extracto is exactly that. The staff were all friendly and I wish I had been able to hangout and enjoy my cup, but I had plans and had to get mine to go. If you're look for a good cup of coffee, check this spot out, it's on my list to go to again the next time I come to Portland.
