Chicago’s Best Irish Pubs and Bars for St. Patrick’s Day | Eater Chicago

"Pronounced “f’doe,” the Gaelic word for “long ago,” this Irish pub has drawn soccer and rugby fans to River North for more than 25 years. The two-floor space has plenty of room for private parties and includes a bar reclaimed from a Dublin pub that’s more than 100 years old. The menu offers a large selection of Irish whiskeys to sip with corned beef and cabbage or shepherd’s pie. Come Saturday for live music with no cover." - Sam Nelson

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Eve at These Spirited Chicago Pubs | Eater

"Kieran McGill named his Irish pub Fado, meaning “long ago” in Gaelic, hoping to bring Irish pub culture, stories, and traditions to Chicagoans — and we can’t think of a better spot to celebrate St. Patrick’s Eve. Expect a menu of scratch-made dishes from McGill’s homeland, from shepherd’s pie and fish and chips to a hulking Irish breakfast complete with black and white pudding, rashers, and Irish sausage. As for the drinks, there’s Irish whiskey of course, and a Jameson and ginger, which they call their “truth serum of choice.” Sláinte!" - Ariel Kanter

"As a traditional Irish pub, this bar in River North has everything you could want to hunker down and watch the games: great drinks and a great atmosphere. With locations in Atlanta, Columbus, and Philadelphia, Fado continuously delivers on the same vibe — soccer on the TV, friendly people at the bar, and tasty dishes ready to order. Went to watch the CWC finals. The fish and chips + curry was awesome. Definitely recommend. Also get the bread pudding! Great bar, great soccer bar and great food! Had an awesome time

Google
A definite place to go to in Chicago. Superb food . I had the Corned Beef entree. It's very busy but worth the wait for a table.

Marcel Rodrigues

Google
Best guinness, I'd put it up there with Ireland, they must go through a lot of it for them to be so fresh, only thing I wish there were more drink specials a.nd urinals in men's room, always stop by when I'm in Chicago

Google
This is my go to place to watch soccer matches of the Premier League and the champions league! I love the vibe, one of the most authentic Irish pubs in the city. My favourite is the Irish breakfast. The beer selection is good. Prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is fantastic!! I highly recommend this place for a drink while watching soccer if you’re a fan.

Google
I came here for happy hour on a Friday. It was easy to get a table and there was plenty of room at the bar. Our server was wonderful at the table. He was prompt and attentive. We ordered the corned beef rolls, stuffed cheese puffs, smoked salmon bites, burger, boxty with cheese, and the bread pudding. Everything tasted amazing. I love how their menu is unique from other bars. Definitely don't sleep on the boxty as it's so hard to find at a pub here in Chicago. This is also one of the pubs that you will find Smithwick's at as well! It's so hard to find a proper Irish pub these days! Also don't sleep on the happy hour specials.

Google
I am going to put the date in this review so the owner can identify the team of employees and pass on our praise. 8th May 2025. We attended the Fado Irish Pub in Chicago. We sat at the bar and were promptly met by a man who was enthusiastic and helpful. We orders from drinks (Guinness x2 and espresso martini) while we looked that the food menu. We quickly worked out our food order and and the barman promptly took the order and deliver our drinks. We stayed for about 4 hours and enjoyed plenty of good beer and some great chats with the two barmen who were on that night. As Australians we don’t tip or have a tab system and the guys just let us pay and tip as we went. This stop was part of a holiday trip for my son’s 21st Birthday and the guys at Fado were excellent… going above and beyond what we expected from a small Irish pub. The entire nights atmosphere was awesome and I recommend to everyone in Chicago area to get in, have a drink or two and something to eat. You will not be disappointed.

Google
The food was amazing but the star of the show was their blackberry bramble. It haunts my dreams.

Google
Great atmosphere, excellent food. Burgers were great, Sheppard's pie tasty as well as the bread pudding. Fresh Guinness to wash it all down. :) Kelly was attentive and got everything right the first time. Will definitely go back.

Yelp
In regards to Irish cuisine, there are a few guiding principles I follow: 1) an Irish breakfast (or full English) is the best way to start the day. 2) the only thing that beats a crisp, cold pint of Guinness... is a pint of Jameson. Came to Fado to watch some good old fashioned footy (six nations is going on). It's your CLASSIC Irish bar. Having been here before, I knew the Irish coffee was good so I got a glass. By god that drink does coffee justice. The head on it is so thicccc I almost caught feelings. I also had the full Irish breakfast. I generally consider Colombian sausage to be the best in the world, however the little sausages they served me were absolutely delicious. Black pudding in general isn't necessarily my fancy (I prefer my oats without blood), but the seasoning was PHENOMENAL. I appreciate the staff letting me hang out to watch rugby all morning. I intend on coming back for more games, and may bring my teammates. I'll probably be eating more Irish food in general too. Hopefully it'll make me as handsome as Cilian Murphy.

Yelp
Overall, it's not a bad spot to chill, but don't expect much from the bar service. Despite usually having two bartenders on deck, they rarely bother to check in on you. Frankly, the service at the bar was just plain crappy. Surprisingly, they weren't even that busy during my visits. My advice? Skip the bar seating and head straight to the patio for better service. Plus, I was pretty disappointed with their Guinness pours. One bad pour? Fine. But three bad ones over two visits? Not cool for a place claiming to be an Irish pub, even in the States. I might give it another shot, but I'll brace myself for spotty service. Hey, it's still beer, right? And who can say no to that?

Yelp
Nice experience here as part of a LARGE group (~30?). Walking in we immediately saw signage to the right for our group and area. We had a great server running orders and drinks for our group specifically. He was friendly and efficient, despite our group's size. My Guinness pour was perfect and delivered quickly. Overall would say it was a little cramped (standing room only and we were pretty packed in) but that just kind of goes with the territory for a large group. The main floor wasn't huge and they had normal patrons there as well. Did wonder if we had more people show up than was expected.

Yelp
I visited for the first time on a sunny Friday afternoon. It's your typical Irish pub with a dive bar vibe, but I was disappointed to sit at the bar for about 10-15 minutes without being acknowledged. We tried to wave down several bartenders and weren't sure if there was an ordering system we didn't know about. We had planned to try their highly recommended pretzel, but after waiting 20 minutes just to get a beer on tap, we quickly finished and decided this won't be our go-to neighborhood bar.

Yelp
My wife and I stopped in here while we were in Chicago because we enjoy Irish pub food. Read that the fish and chips were very good and they were very good. Really like the tartar sauce. I had the Revolution IPA hero, which I thought tasted great. Service was nice and cordial. We enjoyed eating on the patio and watching street traffic.

Yelp
We stopped here for quick drinks before heading to a show across town since it was steps from our hotel. the inside is a really neat space. We were told to seat ourselves upon entering and we went to the upstairs bar in hopes it would be less busy. It was, but at the cost of b-team bartenders lol. It was quite the ordeal trying to figure out if they had Jäegermeister and then they had to confer on how to make a jäegerbomb. My mule tasted like something was rancid. Luckily, my friend's whiskey and coke was normal because that's as easy as it gets. I'm told this was an off experience because my friend's dad comes here often and enjoys himself. I think we just got some duds on a weird day.

Yelp
The food and service was very good! The restaurant is warm and inviting. The prices are very reasonable and the selection is terrific. We will return and you should give Fado a try!!!
google avatar

Mayuri A.

Yelp
Love Fado's! Watching soccer matches at Fados is unbeatable. The atmosphere is electric with many fans supporting their teams in their jerseys and other merch. The service is pretty fast even on game days. I am always amazed by the ability of the servers to carry so many beer glasses in one go. The alcohol and food are very reasonable priced. There are multiple floors with plenty of seating. The ambience is that of a typical Irish pub with old school wooden decor. During st patty's, this place is so lit!

Yelp
Never bean but have herd great stories. Was meant to cum hear sum years ago but had something else which I couldn't miss. Anyone now if it's dog friendly? Hop to bee back in 2025.

Yelp
Brisket was awesome, very lean. Service was excellent and the Guiness was cold! What's not to like. I will be back.
google avatar

Christina S.

Yelp
I ordered the fish and chips and bbq chicken wings-both were fantastic and huge in portion-size. However, the condiments of Tartar Sauce and Blue Cheese Dipping Sauce were not adequate in size and the waitstaff seemed annoyed when I asked for additional portions of both sauces.

Tom V.

Yelp
Solid Irish pub in Chicago. A tad loud for me, an old guy, but good food, good service and solid bar. One of Chicago's top 20 Irish pubs.
google avatar

Stacey H.

Yelp
Great place for happy hour (5-7 weekdays with some weekday specials every day) especially on a nice day when you can sit on the patio! There's a menu posted at the front entrance that has the happy hour options but oddly not provided when you are seated. Friendly staff. The Fado Irish Coffee comes out nice and warm with their own house-made Irish Cream. Another fun drink was the Irish Whiskey Sour!

Christopher S.

Yelp
Smells like sewage. First time here in several years and while it has the same charm, the smell is nothing short of a port-o-johm after a 1000 uses. Disgusting. We sat at the bar near the kitchen, the smell coming out of the kitchen was so bad ai would never recommend eating food from here. The bartenders on the other hand were awesome! But places that smell like poo are generally on my "shit list"!
google avatar

Deidre M.

Yelp
Attended a Wedding Welcome event on 10/19 in advance of my friends wedding. It was really nice atmosphere in the upstairs room. The drinks were also delish (Irish Sour yum and so many great beers). We arrived a bit late due to travel, but the food we did enjoy was delicious (salmon and potato). It felt very authentic and historic vibes -- nothing like it in LA that's for sure! Also I heard these are the same owners as Emerald Loop (which we also enjoyed).
google avatar

Mahritzah W.

Yelp
Great food, I would have liked some toast to sip the sauce and the soft egg yolk. The service was great. The ambiance during the Arsenal game amazing.
google avatar

Megan E.

Yelp
We came here for drinks and apps to watch a game and loved it. Sat at the bar, and service was excellent. The pretzel appetizer was great and we thought the pricing was fair. We thought it was a cozy vibe too.
google avatar

Caroline B.

Yelp
Our server was so nice! There weren't a ton of people there so he was able to chat with us a bit about football (Go Lions!) The burger was delicious and the potato wedges came out piping hot. My hubby requested bbq sauce on the side and he said it tasted great and homemade.
google avatar

Sean H.

Yelp
Dirty pub with lousy bar grub. Service is terribly slow and poor. Staff are rude and surly and unprofessional. Bathrooms are filthy. Chicago Fire Code is regularly violated due to excessive occupancy. My food has been undercooked to unsafe degree. Food and alcohol is overpriced given that the food is nothing more than bar grub for over-served drunk people. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS DIVE BAR AT ALL.
google avatar

Renee V.

Yelp
Went onto Yelp looking for a happy hour around this area. Knowing our fellow Yelpers would not steer me wrong. Another delightful find ! Service was incredible! Our waitress kept her eye on every table and checked on us throughout our visit. We ordered the giant pretzel and fish tacos. Both were delicious. The pretzel had a great bite , salty and chewy and came with a grainy mustard. The fish tacos came two to an order. The fish was firm and flaky served in a flour tortilla. No grease in sight! My Pinot Grigio was ice cold and my friend loved her cocktail! This is going to be added to my list of favorites when visiting Chicago!

Scott S.

Yelp
Just went in for a beer. Nice place for that!! I sat at the bar and the bartender took good care of me.

Yelp
There are two places I'd ever watch the world cup, one is at home in France somewhere at a local pub or right here at Fado in towndown Chicago. Fado means business when it comes to footall/soccer. They not only open up earlier than the times indicated on Google and yelp for special matches, but they have the greatest game day atmosphere outside of an in-stadium experience. Staff is family, drinks are decently priced with a great on tap collection and food...i will come back to you on that. But they have food to soak up that Guinness on tap don't you worry - it's just been my personal preference to stay dehydrated and unfed while drinking Guinness. So if you want a fun time, good drinks and likely decent food on a game day (or non game day), head to Fado. If you wanna have a terrible time, bad drinks and subpar food, don't go there. Truly get so homesick during the world cup and a huge shout-out to this bar for making up for 4000-plus-miles that seperate me and my home atmosphere. Tip: Make sure to come well in advance any big soccer matches or events or call ahead to ask for a suggested time of arrival. They get to capacity quickly and will not let you in of so.
google avatar

Pat M.

Yelp
We had a very good time here. Service was great, food was very good "pub food" and the beers were cold.
google avatar

Carter W.

Yelp
Here's a tip for all the married lads who frequent historic Irish pubs with their wives in hopes to get her loose when you get back home: Don't drink six Guinness' and run around pretending to be a leprechaun. The luck of the Irish will not smile upon you.

Jonathan M.

Yelp
It was great place! The food, drinks, and atmosphere were great! Made two stop for my trip in Chicago!

Leon T.

Yelp
Literally the nicest servers and bartenders in all of Chicago. I am only in town for 2 days and there are hundreds of bars to go to but came here 3 times in one day just because the staff are very personable, and make you feel like family. Just lovely people. Connor Daley at the bar in particular is the best. Also the drinks are delicious. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Emily P.

Yelp
Very cool Irish pub with traditional decor and great food. We both ordered the fish and chips and wow, delish. Probably the best fish and chips I've ever had-- great flavor, nicely crisp and a huge serving. Service was friendly and it was a great place to warm up with a quick bite and a beer.
google avatar

Jake L.

Yelp
Decent food, decent service. The female bartender gave me a hella attitude for asking for a menu. My phone was dead, and she made fun of me for asking for it. So yea, im butt hurt about it.
google avatar

Mia L.

Yelp
Solid 3! Ordered fish and chips and drinks. Fish was great, chips were meh. Wish the menu had more salad/healthier options though - quite scant. They have a wine special on Wednesday where you get a solid pour for like half price. Trivia is also fun!
google avatar

Laura F.

Yelp
We were visiting during the Thanksgiving holiday and had already had our fill of Chicago pizza. So we were craving comfort food and nobody does that better than an Irish pub. We ordered the shepherd's pie and salad. One of the best salads we've had in a long, long time. The dressing was amazing. The pie came in a round dish that resembled a small cast iron skillet. It was lightly broiled/toasted on top and was delicious. We all ate every bite. There were good chunks of carrots with the meat. The portion was just right. We didn't order drinks, just water, and the waitress didn't give us a hard time for that. She was kind, efficient, and appreciative of our business. We ate a little earlier than the usual dinner crowd so it wasn't too loud or crowded. Great experience.
google avatar

Reagan W.

Yelp
One of the best Irish bars in town for food! Love the Rueben and fish tacos. Great bar and good service.

Rohith P.

Yelp
Great irish bar for happy hour and trivia. Claire was our server and a great personality that fits the spot

Ilisa K.

Yelp
Such a fun place for happy hour! Claire is the best waitress. Made our experience so fun!
google avatar

Yelp
Great spot with great deals and great drinks - highly reccomend it. One of the few restaraunt serving food late in river north which is nice

Roxanne S.

Yelp
We hosted a rehearsal dinner for our son & future daughter-in-law this past Friday night at Fadó. Great vibe in the 3rd floor Purty Loft, delicious food & beverages, super-attentive staff, and key selling point: an accommodation (elevator) for people with mobility issues (several guests are recovering from knee replacement surgeries and a guest who uses a wheelchair.) We received so many compliments and thank you's for having our event there, and we're so delighted we made the choice to go with Fadó. Event coordinator Alyssa was extremely helpful in assisting through the planning process, which was essentially painless thanks to her efforts. Kevin was gracious, patient, and helpful as we toured the prospective site for our event in advance, and Kieran himself was THE absolute best in seeing that everything was perfect for our guests once we made the decision to go with Fadó. He's open to conversation, understanding, and willing to go that extra step to see that everyone is happy and feels welcome. His vigilance and care over the course of the evening were noticed and greatly appreciated. Nice vegetarian options on the party menu, as well as meat, poultry & out-of-this-world fish & chips. The food was attractively presented, and hot foods kept hot. Special note: Music piped in over the sound system was an acceptable volume for good energy in the room without being obnoxiously loud. Grateful to have had access to such a welcoming, inclusive space on a holiday weekend, as well. A great experience altogether. A Million Thanks, Fadó Chicago!

Brad L.

Yelp
Would go back in a heartbeat! Great service and friendly staff. Open mic night was a bonus

Joe B.

Yelp
Ate at the Buckhead Atlanta location. Good food. We love restaurants like this. Best thing on the menu is the Irish breakfast. We were a little less bowled over by the Rueben sandwich and the Fish n chips. Nice beer selection but I always ordered a Guinness. Of course you can get that anywhere. If we lived nearby and frequented I might try some other beers. Did not see any oatmeal stouts on the menu. I was a bit irritated that they call a beef pie "Shepherd's". They of all people should know that a shepherd's pie should be with lamb, hence the name. Overall a good experience. A touch pricey but it was in Buckhead. We like Fado much more than Tod English pubs we have eaten at. McGuire's in Pensacola is the standard for all pubs in my opinion.
google avatar

Christopher F.

Yelp
One last stop before turning in for the night. It's hard to find places open late in the area. We had a couple beers. The server was very nice. We wanted a snack but the kitchen was closed. No worries. Next time!
google avatar

Alyssa L.

Yelp
First time here!! My husband and I came here to chill and eat. We chose this place over another place because we loved the vibe. Chill, fun, lively and relaxing atmosphere:). The food was good!! We had fish and chips and the Ruben !! Highly recommend. I also got the spiked peppermint hot chocolate and it def was yummy! Will come back again. Much love from Texas!!
google avatar

Journey M.

Yelp
uhhh fun because of the company i was with. awful espresso martini that tasted like straight baileys.
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, pretty decent food (had the salmon bites) and incredible service. Sat the bar and really enjoyed great conversations and laughs. Have not had much on the menu, but will definitely come back.
google avatar

Meredith B.

Yelp
Food was AMAZING and was out fairly quickly after we ordered. I got the fish tacos and, no joke, they were probably the best fish tacos I have ever had. You can tell it's fresh and cooked with care. Great ambiance and music played. Real pub feel with enough space for big parties. Our server was very personable and sweet. 5 stars hands down.

Lucas M.

Yelp
Been coming here for years! Love it! We will never come back. Close out every check. NEVER leave an open tab. Your card WILL BE stolen. Keep your hands in your pockets. Do not say I didn't warn you

Mike B.

Yelp
I live in a very nice but small town in Florida with limited dining choices. I was in Chicago for a quick visit and mentioned that I would like to go to an Irish bar for either a corned beef or rueben sandwich. My son took me to Fados and I was not disappointed one bit in my Rueben sandwich which was perfectly prepared. I paired it with a local micro brew to create the perfect lunch. I recommend that you try the Fado Irish pub if you are in the area.
google avatar

Justin V.

Yelp
Been here for Sunday brunch a few times and it's always very good. Much larger than the Easton location. Service has always been great. Parking in the garage is convenient and right across the street from the front door. They pour a solid pint of Guinness. The Irish coffee is good. I've enjoyed the Irish Breakfast, Eggs Benedict, and steak (+ chimichurri!) & eggs thus far.
google avatar

Tracy L.

Yelp
We came in to watch a soccer game, and it was busy. There weren't any open tables that could comfortably fit 3 tall guys and myself. An older man must have noticed we were circling to scout a table and told us he had a large table that was half open and the people already there were going to leave soon. It was very appreciated! $4 mimosas on Saturday and Sunday, and it was a perfect champagne/OJ portioned pour. We had a small bite to eat- I got their Roasted Beets Salad, which was surprisingly good and refreshing. The guys got a half order of fish and chips, and the portion looked big to me! I didn't try the fish, but the fries were good. The bar itself could use a little maintenance - the ceiling, floor, and particularly in the women's restroom the hand soap and toilet paper holder was off the wall. Also I understand lightly dimmed, but if it's morning/afternoon, it was a little TOO dark inside. However, overall, it's a pretty solid bar and prices are reasonable considering the location!
google avatar

Nicole D.

Yelp
We were weary from site seeing on an 80 degree day and noticed this pub on the walk back to the hotel. The bartender was friendly and greeted us quickly. I asked about happy hour which he refused but he offered us $4 Mimosas. I would not recommend however, the juice was too pulpy and thick for our taste and way too sweet. Prepared with Prosecco not Brut. I ordered a crispy buffalo chicken sandwich with spring mix salad and it was delicious. My gf ordered a cup of Minestrone and she ate the entire cup. This was a satisfying pit stop for two hungry travelers.
google avatar

William B.

Yelp
It was good, service was excellent, all the servers were well dressed, good looking staff. Fish and chips were very good. Cool atmosphere. Shepherds pie could have used seasoning in the potatoes on top, coleslaw was legit.
google avatar

Tommy O.

Yelp
I've been to Fado many times as I am a huge Futbol fan and watch the Premier League quite a bit! They also show rugby as well. Fado is located in the heart of River North at Clark & Grand. It opens up as early as 6:30am for those early soccer matches and unfortunately it's a Manchester United bar. For bigger matches, like the World Cup, Champions League, or Liverpool/Manchester United, there is usually a line. So definitely get there early as they can reach capacity. Fado is decently large and has an upstairs. The ambience is obviously an Irish Pub. They also pour the best Guinness in Chicago! I came here for brunch last weekend after a long run for marathon training. I ordered the Eggs Benedict and a side of Irish Sausage. The food was delicious! For dinner, I have had their fish and chips, black bean burger, and their grilled chicken sandwich (which looks like it isn't even on the menu anymore). But I think their food is pretty good pub food especially when compared to the Globe and AJ Hudson's. Prices are a little bit more expensive being River North, but remember you get what you pay for. Service is pretty good overall. When it's packed it might take a little bit to get drinks, but that should be expected. Overall, I love Fado and it's one of the best soccer bars in Chicago!

Michelle B.

Yelp
This place should be called Farto's instead of Fado's. It smelled of sewage and we could only stay for 1 drink because of the horrible stench!
