Historic Railway Hotels Take New Hotel Honors in Canada

"Set amid the striking scenery of Charlevoix, I found Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu to combine classic grandeur with breathtaking vistas: built by Richelieu and Ontario Navigation Company as a luxury retreat for steamship passengers around the turn of the 20th century, the hotel resembles a French château surrounded by manicured gardens, a golf course, farmsteads and charming waterfront villages. The 405 classically designed rooms and suites (all stocked with Le Labo bath products) and a state-of-the-art spa with indoor and outdoor pools make it easy to relax, while the location offers year-round outdoor activities from skiing to rock climbing and a lively casino within a short walk; across multiple dining venues, the scenery and views are what truly stand out." - The MICHELIN Guide

A 24 Hour Itinerary to Eating at the Best Restaurants in Charlevoix’s Baie-Saint-Paul and La Malbaie | Eater Montreal

"In La Malbaie I roam the grounds of the Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu, an iconic hotel perched on a cliff above the St-Lawrence River that was originally built in 1899 and rebuilt in château style in 1929 after a massive fire." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu (Quebec, Canada) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The magnificent setting of the Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu, perched high on the Pointe-au-Pic bluffs overlooking the St. Lawrence River, is no coincidence. The location was specifically chosen by a Canadian shipping company that hoped to attract travelers aboard its new passenger vessels from Quèbec City in the late Victorian era. Resembling a grand ivy-clad French château, the luxury hotel is just as striking to behold today, not to mention easier to access. With hundreds of rooms and suites, indoor and outdoor pools, a state-of-the-art spa, an array of upscale dining venues, and easy access to outdoor activities from golf to winter sports, it’s an easy retreat that feels both modern and timeless." - Tablet Hotels

We went during the off season, so a lot of the towns we wanted to visit were closed and the whale watching that was suggested to us was no longer happening, which was okay because the hotel's heated pools were a nice alternative activity. For the price point, the quality of the rooms did not quite match. Although it was spacious, there was a lot of open space, the TV was old, the beds were hard, and the bathroom was small. The fact that it was a tub + shower combination was quite surprising for a 5 star hotel.

This hotel is absolutely wonderful! The interior is stunning, with elegant details throughout, and the rooms are spotless and exceptionally comfortable. The view is simply breathtaking. I highly recommend booking a room overlooking the river for an unforgettable experience. What truly sets this hotel apart, though, is the staff. Their warmth, professionalism, and dedication make you feel genuinely cared for, and they go above and beyond to ensure every detail of your stay is perfect. A special mention goes to the concierge service, which was outstanding and made my visit even more memorable! If you have a special event in your life, this is the best place to have it!

We stayed here on an impromptu road trip. The two-night stay was amazing. The hotel is beautiful, and you could spend time inside and around for hours. It is well located, with great service, and we had a generously large room. We had a good buffet breakfast and a nice in-room dine-in experience. We were with our three-month-old, and the only thing I could change was the room temperature! It felt a bit cold, and we were worried about the baby.

We enjoyed our stay at Fairmont. We had a room overlooking the river. It was calming and relaxing. Was raining that afternoon when we checked in and quite chilly so we didn't get to enjoy much the outdoor til the next day. Staff gave us free bottled water and a pair of slippers, (which was really appreciated). Had dinner at Bellerive. The next day my sister and I had breakfast buffet. The staff at the resto were very friendly and attentive. Thank you for the excellent service!!

We stayed September 4-7, based on reviews we had mixed feelings too. ||When arrived greeted with smile at door, went to reception where we met Roxanne who was pleasant and friendly. She even took the time to look around and found us a best room ( probably because I’m an Accor gold member).||House keeping was amazing always, special thanks to Diana! We had enough tea since we don’t drink coffee, also enough water. ||We really enjoyed the pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, truly amazing ||Bellerive cafe -Claudia who was amazing and friendly and fun. She made us a very nice hot chocolate ( Italian 😋😋) also everything here was tasty and healthy. ||Laurent ( concierge) who we met on our 2day, from meeting him everything went from ok to extremely enjoyable. He was very pleasant and friendly. Thanks to Laurent we did Maverick Sport Side-by-Side 2-seater. We dearly appreciated his level service!!||Bar- wasn’t very impressed but staff tried their best. Could’ve been lot better comparing with other Fairmont facilities. ||Overall enjoyed the stay, special thanks to Laurent, Roxanna and Claudia for making our stay more memorable.

Location, location, location. No doubt about that. It's unique. We stayed at the Fairmont for 3 nights while exploring the Charlevoix area with an excursion to Les Escoumins to see whales. Like I told the hotel already, they need to upgrage the installations to bring it to this century. Don't get me wrong, the hotel has a unique charm and the service is excellent. I cant't comment much on the food except for breakfast which is adequate but could more elaborate. That's what you expect in an Accorn resort. Overall our stay was memorable and I would go back anytime.

Google
Manoir Richelieu is absolutely a wonderful place to go and enjoy the quiet, relaxing environment. But the restaurant only offers one (1) menu, which can become boring...... The Prices are BIG, and the offering on your plate is rather small. The Staff is wonderful, the scenery is outstanding though. We enjoyed the Casino. We will be back for sure.

We stayed at this great hotel from September 14th to September 18th with another couple and we just loved the experience, from the arrival to the departure. We went to all the restaurants and bar as well as the golf club house. The food was excellent and the staff was amazing everywhere. The rooms were very well appointed and the housekeeping staff was outstanding. The employees at the front desk were very helpful. We are highly recommending this beautiful hotel. Andree et Armand

Yelp
This is throwback to luxury of the 19th century. Well appointed rooms and dining areas with extraordinary views of the St Lawrence fjord beside the hotel. My only criticisms are (1) the valet staff was either inadequately staffed or not concerned with providing prompt service (2) the old fashioned layout puts many of the bedrooms at the end of a maze not immediately adjacent to the core common areas.

Yelp
The food was good except for the brise bar that messed up our order countless times and can not do anything celiac free and the outdoor is awesome with a mini putt course that is really hard and a nice pool. The rooms our a little out of date but clean and the views are impeccable. So that's a 4 out of 5.

Yelp
We visited for the views and the historical aspect of the building. We did not stay here. We arrived at around 2.00pm hoping to have tea and cake in the lobby or on the terrasse. There was nothing and the bar did not open until ?? I don't think I have every been anywhere at this level of hotel where I have not been asked if they could get me anything. Quel domage! The receptionist was helpful but not proactive. A few people were asleep, a few reading. I would have loved some really good hotel history in exhibit form in the lobby rather than photos with no descriptions. Would not have know G7 was here had it not been for the flags outside. The casino seemed to be slotties only and a few gaming tables. My money was needing poker machines. It was all a bit sad. All in all it felt lazy, though it smelled lovely.

Yelp
A découvrir.

Yelp
We arrived on a weekday recently and it was dead quiet. A little disconcerting coming from the bustle of the Frontenac. But this hotel has its own great experiences. My husband was actually glum the final few hours before we checked out! Where else can one experience swimming in a snowstorm? And staying nice and warm in a heated pool? We went ice fishing and the staff person was wonderful. Nice ice skating rink also. And hiking trails. Do get a river view room. And do eat at Chez Truchon about a mile down the road and go to artisanal bakery in town.

A.K. M.

Yelp
If you have kids-come here. It has so many great amenities like a pool, play room, mini golf, archery, bounce house.....etc etc. Rooms are a bit dated and the coffee like downstairs in the AM is a little crazy. However, beautiful views from the property, a nice hiking trail and a nice place to spend a few days.

Yelp
We chose the Manior Richelieu for its location, its ambiance, its view and because of the Fairmont's reputation for service. We had stayed at the Fairmont Chateau in Whistler last year and felt like a king and queen!! This Fairmont was disappointing on several levels: 1. There is no concierge, you must wait in line at the service desk, and there was often only one person working (with clients lined up waiting). 2. All of the fireplaces are either non-working, or the one 'fire' we found was a fake one, and small at that. This resort is in a cold climate area, overlooking water, and there are no fires were burning, except for the fire pit outside on occasion. They told us the government did not allow it because the hotel is on the register of historical places. Hmm, I'm not sure I buy that. Fairmont Manior RIchelieu is made of stone and has stood there for 120 years!! -sad- 3. We ate at the restaurant in the hotel the night we arrived. The meal was decidedly mediocre. My husbands' walleye had many, many bones and scales in it! This, too, was disappointing. 4. Many of the little, but elegant, touches we have seen and expect from 5 star resort hotels with a storied history were missing---no large, shiny coffee urn in the hall with cream and sugar in the morning, no large glass water dispenser (with slices of fruit floating) in the foyer, (they did have a small plastic jug of water and apples set out for the walkers and joggers by the front entrance), no chocolates on the pillow at turndown, etc....there was a lovely fruit tray in our room upon check-in, and the housekeeping was good. Our room was large and comfortable, and we had a huge closet, but my husband and I usually took turns in the bathroom because it was so tiny.

Yelp
This is now my second stay at this beautiful hotel in the middle of nowhere! It is classy, has good service, and is a nice quiet retreat place. I've frequented the area because of the serene outdoors, whale watching, and beautiful scenery. Since my first stay here, some things have changed. The hotel has expanded, free parking is further away, but the same consistent good service has remained the same. The hotel sits at the top of a hill overlooking the St. Lawrence River where, just today, my family spotted a whale passing by! I remember spotting whales just sitting out front even on my first visit, too. The hotel has all of the usual amenities (outdoor heated swimming pools, tennis courts, golf) and several restaurants and a casino with an underground tunnel from the hotel to the casino built in!). I haven't had much luck at the casino, but I think it's more for entertainment than actual gambling! Tour buses come by, so it's quite a happening spot for the region. More than even the hotel is its proximity to several outdoor spots that I love: whale watching at Tadoussac hiking and biking at La Haute Gorge hiking and canoing at Grande Jardin biking and walking along La Malbaie enjoying the beach (low tide) at St. Irenee Restaurant choices around the area have also improved over the years, which makes the luxury of the Fairmont even more attractive. When the weather is rainy, it's nice to stay indoors to dine at the hotel. When the weather is nice, it's nice to explore the restaurants around town.

Yelp
Not only is this hotel gorgeous, the staff is amazing. Maleni Rendon Chavez helped us book a via ferrata when the one we wanted was full. We were worried we wouldn't get to go while we were in Quebec but she searched online and made phone calls and made sure we got a reservation - she was amazing! The resort is lucky to have her!!!

Yelp
Wow. Incredible let down. I hope they do the G7 somewhere else. This place is five star in description only. They simply met the check boxes required to be designated a five star but their service, the quality of the experience and the rooms were less than a two star. They over promise and completely under deliver on experience and quality. The area has far less to do in the summer and spring then they claim on their website. They spent more money on the photos and their website then on training their people, providing a relaxing experience, and upkeeing the hotel. There are no antiques, there is very little comfort or warmth from the staff. There are little to none of the promised activities on site unless you beg them to honor it. The activity fee is a fraud. Motels do not charge you to use the pool and yet this hotel builds that into the fee. This does not feel like a castle or manor. No antiques, unlit chimneys, and rooms that look like the marriott sold their old furniture at a discount to the fairmont. There are no flowers. The staff is not accommodating. Everything is overprice and comes with an extra fee. The pool is messy with towels everywhere. The sports desk and the concierge booth were unmanned the three long days we were uncomfortably there. Honestly, this is just a resting place for the people at the sad little casino next door. The limited parking is completely full so you walk to get to the hotel unless you want a fee to park, in the middle of nowhere! The website is misleading. You have to beg them to follow through on promises. The welcome is poor. The treatment is cold. The decor is sad. A dog is at the reception and the staff was more concerned about his afternoon walk then introducing us to the hotel. Long story short, this region has nothing going on in the summer. The resort is overpriced. It lives off an old name and old ranking. It makes its money desperately wherever it can and will not treat you right. The reality is that this place is for people who want to gamble or want privacy from busier places. I felt creeped out the entire time. It felt like the shining. Stay in Quebec of find somewhere nicer, somewhere else. There is potential for the region but not for the hotel. They need a major investment all new staff and total change in atmosphere. Ive also read the manager's responses to these comments. He's no where to be seen in the hotel. He clearly has not made any updates or changes. Lip service and posturing is not enough for a five star. This place should be shut down until it is fixed or it should reclassify what it offers. We flew to Canada for this place, huge waste of time at a sad old place.

Yelp
possiby the best hotel in La Malbaie, a100 year old manor built to entertain timber barons and east coast brahmins at the turn of the century. overlooking the St. Laurence River, the hotel amenities include 3 saltwater heated and hydro-pools, both in/out, full service spa, hammam, tennis, trails, golf, gym, 4 restaurants. and the casino is across from the hotel (won $100 on slots first night). rooms are well appointed, b-fast buffet is not to be missed. lots of healthy options AND full english. service is professional, concierge helped keep activities planned each day. most of all, the hotel is set amongst the highlands of the grand fleuve. nature is indeed beautiful here. think whales & moose!

Yelp
Beautiful exterior and amazing grounds. Food sucks. The service is decent, but not what I would expect... My chair had large crumbs on it, we saw 3 flies at our table and more at others!!!! And my burger was like a meatloaf... In my opinion a burger should not be mixed with egg and bread crumbs like a meatloaf......., the steam room was closed because the door for the steam room needed to be replaced and they are still waiting for the door to arrive...., the gift shop downstairs is selling some really odd tacky items. I generally feel like this place could be a lot more luxurious for the location and reputation. It's like visiting your boring grandparents mansion... Bad food and all.

Yelp
Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu in Charlevoix (La Malbaie), Quebec, Canada - 4 stars: working my way through the old Canadian railway hotels - this was the fourth we visited of the two dozen or so ... this one now owned by the Fairmont Hotel chain. Been here a number of times - before and after the casino was installed next door on former hotel property in 1994. I must admit it was a bit more romantic and approachable before the casino arrived (5-stars); the casino has really increased traffic and business for the hotel (now 4-stars). That said, the casino is a fun place for gamblers ... big open airy room full of tables. The hotel has nice romantic pools - indoor and outdoor. Also a great destination place for golfers. Ate in Le Saint-Laurent Restaurant (before casino) and had a wonderful meal chosen from a wide selection of beef and fish and local Charlevoix foods. Tried the lunch buffet once (after casino); it is a quick meal to feed the gamblers and get them back to gambling ... it was ok. All-in-all, this is a fine place and we will return. Not much here for young children or young families, but a great adult adventure.

Yelp
I was there last week, incredible hotel. Try the Charlevoix restaurant. It is very, very pricey but it is worth it! Next to the Casino so they are ready to take your bloke money. The hotel outdoor heated pool was great, its amazing to be swimming during a snowfall. Unreal and romantic. Nice view on the water too.

Yelp
Heavenly setting, grand hotel, excellent restaurants, impeccable service, elegant atmosphere. Charlevoix is a dreamy nature and food lover's retreat. The front desk service was friendly and English-speaking. Splurge on a room with the river view, it is worth it and will make your stay all the more memorable - try to wake up early and catch the sunrise while relaxing in bed. There are several restaurants with all of them offering delicious local fare - the Charlevoix was the most expensive, with a very small, intimate dining room and a stunning view (the burrata, the lamb two ways, the crab leg bisque - all perfection) . Dinner at the Bellerive was just as exceptional (tasty parsnip soup - unexpected), and the breakfast on the outside terrace facing the river was unforgettable - the eggs Benedict with duck confit and herbs was superb!! Romantic ambiance at the piano bar with an impressive jazz singer; all the better spot to savor the local beers and spirits. Concierge was helpful in recommending things to do, and the nearby nature walks were not crowded at all. They have a lovely gift shop run by the Charlevoix cidrerie that offers all kinds of regional specialties. I will say that the only thing I was disappointed with was the upkeep of the pool area; we went around 5pm on a gorgeous but hot day and the place was littered with used towels, dirty dishes and beer cans. Granted it was probably a busy day, but there's no excuse with the prices you are paying and it seems that they need to hire a few more hands on deck in that area. Other than that, a well hidden gem; we would love to return to this remote slice of paradise!

Yelp
Located several hours away from Quebec City, its a gorgeous hotel located overlooking the St. Lawrence River. Rooms were well appointed and spacious. The restaurants were pricey, but very good. I would not recommend the buffet restaurant on site as it was mediocre (unless you are bringing kids). This is a great place to get away and relax with a nice glass of wine or beer and watch the river. There is a casino on-site which seems to be pretty popular with the Quebecois with many buses rolling in to discharge their passengers, but its not obtrusive. The outdoor pool is pretty small for the size of the property, but it is heated. The indoor pool is a throwback to ultra high end spas from the early 20th century with palladium windows, potted plants, and clean tilework- very nice! Although there is some activities to partake in around the area (whale watching, hiking, some shopping), where this place shines is as a place to relax and take in the scenery. This is a real gem for a relaxing getaway. Pro-Tip for English speakers: Unlike the rest of Canada, French is the primary language in Quebec Province. Learn some at least survival French before you visit Quebec, as although you will have more bilingual speakers in the cities to help with communication, once you get further out in this part of the province, they get fewer and far between. Also, nearly all signage is in French without English translation, including road signs.

Yelp
I stay at this hotel annually before dropping my kids off at a nearb y summer camp. It is by far the most spectacular hotels in the region for it wonderful views. It also has an amazing sports facility with indoor/outdoor pools that my children love. The golf course is breathtaking. It is a typical Fairmont property in its historical significance and setting. Rooms are a decent size with good amenities. The food at the restaurants on-demand is very good, but service is very very slow and at times annoying. I find service at this hotel overall lacking. The Front Desk Staff was missing in action most of the time, the concierge not really around, I asked to speak to the food/beverage manager but he too was unavailable. I think the hotel is generally understaffed. A shame because this hotel could be up there with the great hotel resort destinations. So do your research beforehand and take control of your own itinerary for your visit to this spectacular region of Quebec.

Yelp
Fabulous sejour and a special thank you to Concierge Gabrielle who got me into le jardin des 4 vents !! Merci mille fois !

Yelp
Incredible hotel with a jaw dropping view of the Saint Lawrence river. Only thing is that the rooms were a little small for a family of four, as we had to shift some furniture to fit our luggage. In addition, some rooms have windows the size of portholes on a cruise ship, and you must pay extra for a room with a view, instead of a room with a view of the parking lot. Finally, it is right next to a small casino so parking is sometimes difficult.

Martin S.

Yelp
We stayed three nights from Thursday the 27th. I think what surprised us were the inadequate staffing levels. Upon arrival it seemed as though they'd been called away to some emergency. At check-in, only one staff member was present, and the queue was already beginning to build. We later stopped into the lounge/bar area, but it soon became evident that no one was there/willing to serve us, so we moved closer to the bar. Even then it took approximately 10 minutes for the waiter to take our drinks order. During our wait, others were forced to visit the bar and request that someone attend them. Throughout the remainder of our visit, we observed this puzzling absence. Even when present, the general indifference to guests was noted. Not always I might add - some staff were at least congenial and willing to please. On the Saturday evening, we returned from dinner in town, but there was no chasseur in attendance when we drove up to the front door. We waited, along with others (another couple were there also) until we finally decided to walk up to reception to ask for assistance. No one there either. Scanning around, we spied the hostess for the bar and asked if she could help. It was clear we'd interrupted her private call, and for that we were treated with the least enthusiasm and politeness she could muster. Eventually a young man (ginger hair) appeared at reception, who then proceeded to inform us that the chasseur was probably busy when we arrived. In a hotel of this size, on a Saturday night (8:30ish) it's difficult to believe that they'd only have one staff member manning the front door. Not once, did we ever, ever see the concierge desk manned. Rather pointless having the station there at all I'd say/ There were plenty of other niggling issues - we ordered breakfast in our room for the Friday morning. Despite marking the order sheet clearly, we didn't get muffins, peanut butter or newspaper. We asked for the breakfast to arrive at 8:00, but it didn't materialise till 8:30. These problems in isolation would appear to be petty gripes, but the sum total didn't add up. We have a wide experience of hotels around the world, and in particular our experience of the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel was excellent, which made our visit to the Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu all the more disappointing. We're not entirely sure why things weren't up to scratch, but it certainly deserves the attention of Fairmont management. Perhaps a clandestine visit would give them a fair impression of standards. We certainly expected better.
